I must admit, this was far better than I thought it would be. The framing device makes this work in a way to actually lend itself to helping viewers figure out the plot.
It's basically set up as Tomoya telling Ushio the story of "how I met your mother" all the way up to when Ushio was born, with Ushio asking questions and Tomoya doing his best to answer them. But, after that point...
Ushio falls asleep and Tomoya continues his story, talking about these memories he hasn't told her about, what we know as episodes 17-21 of After Story. Tomoya recalls these events and believes that what happened was real. Somehow, after Ushio died, "something" happened, and suddenly he was back to the day of Ushio's birth.
So, in other words, Tomoya remembers what happened (as I stated I believed back in the episode 22 thread) and the memories undoubtedly affect him to this day, making him appreciate what he has and knowing how fragile it all is.Afterwards, there's a short scene of original animation, showing the aftermath of this story in a rather cute way.
In the end, this was a really effective recap episode and something I'm glad I watched, even if I didn't get an announcement of Little Busters! and/or Planetarian afterwards. 8/10.
Well there was more Ushio...so that should make some people happy.

Judging purely from screencaps, the atmosphere and lack of Nagisa in the original animation scene is a good setting for a conclusion to the story for those who wish episodes 21, 22, and the end of 20 never happened. o_o
Purely on screencaps...of just the original animation...yes it could look like that.
But with the rest of the screencaps...and voicework?

I thought it was great. It overall explained the general flow of the story really well and it made me remember a lot of things and get nostalgic all over again. The 50 episodes felt a LOT shorter looking back. Some good arrangement for the music too. I'll miss this show more than I though I would. Though I still liked the other Key shows in Air and Kanon too.

Actually it isn't that bad of an ending after all, considering how they used Tomoya telling his past to Ushio as a way of recap. IMO, it is certainly an excellent sendoff despite the lack of new frames and scenes.
And LOL at the recap on Kyou being trapped in the gym store with Tomoya and showing all the turn-on frames of her being on the extreme deredere side.
Anyway, is it me or Kyou has got more scenes than the other girls in this recap? And is the piano version of Nagisa/Dango Daikazoku/Chiisana Tenohira in any of the albums?
And is the piano version of Nagisa/Dango Daikazoku/Chiisana Tenohira in any of the albums?I haven't had a chance to see it yet, but on the Memento album is a piano version of Nagisa's theme called "Nagisa ~Warm piano mix~" so that's probably it.

You know, I've never really liked recap episodes since they seemed to be a waste of time, but I think I understand now what they're good for. By summarizing all the themes ever presented within the CLANNAD narrative over the better part of two years in one episode, it might well help people to see the overall narrative with a new outlook based on refreshed memories. Particularly for this case, the recap episode might well be the very thing needed to help many viewers come to terms with an ending they might not be entirely sold on. Kudos, it worked so much better as part of the TV broadcast, than it would have as a DVD-packaged OVA.
Still, since it's a recap, I'm not going to bother writing an article about it; I'd much rather spend my time on the final impressions writeup instead. 9/10.
I think it would have been interesting if KyoAni had made it a continuation of when Tomoya was first telling Ushio about Nagisa on the train after their trip.
Well, this was a good way to stab you right in the heart to remind you that it is over. :(
Good way to bring nostalgia and love back for the characters at the end. I do wish they would've show Nagisa under the tree at the end. I still remember episode 1 in that scene where she was under the tree eating lunch and how pretty it was, the shadows of the leaves plastered over her.
Recaps are fairly boring, though. It was a 7/10, like all recaps are, just plain boring. Though the series itself is phenomenal. Big review to come~

Meh. I've already stored away my Toradora and Clannad subs to make way on my hard drive for Spring 2009 shows. Too much of a hassle to recompile everything just for the sake of completion.
On that note, Munto's ending just left we with a big WTF so I'm tuning out of KyotoAni fanman mode until K-On! comes out.

It is as most people here have said, this recap was actually enjoyable to watch, mainly because it was crafted like a bedtime story that Tomoya tells Ushio about.
And like how people recall events when telling their story, they don't do so in a rigid chronological way which plague how recap episodes in other series are narrated and ended up being scorned.
Instead, this recap has Tomoya narrate through "threads", like going from: meeting Nagisa -> gathering club members (brief introduction of said members) -> moving in with Nagisa -> graduating and working, etc.
So this was actually a breath of fresh air compared to the other boring recap episodes I never would have bothered with in other series. (AIR being the main exception, which is also done by Key/Kyo-Ani)
Of course, by structuring it as a bedtime story, there's the problem of how the "non-existent" events of episodes 17-21 could get explained. That got sorted out well by having Tomoya actually "remembering" these events "like a dream", and yet he believed he has experienced them, which he indeed has, but just couldn't figure out how.
Note that during the monologue concerning episodes 17-21, Tomoya makes no mention of the Illusionary World. This makes sense, as IW-Ushio told the Robot (Tomoya) that when he returns to the Real World, he will have no memory of ever being in IW, so we only see Tomoya "waking up" from his "dream" and finding Nagisa alive and well.
Wow, I'm actually singing praises for a recap episode. :heh:
But seeing as this is a good way to wrap things up, plus the original footage near the end was a nice touch as well, it's a good way to see off the series.
One things I was half right and half wrong about. If we take Episode 22 to be the END, then I was right in saying that Fuuko gets the last word. However with the additional footage from 24...Ushio gets the last word of this series. A rather fitting word to close it all out.
It's a shame that this series is finally over and it really did feel short on my end. It's like they say "all good things must come to an end." I enjoyed every moment of this recap episode because it reminded me of all the important moments in the series and at the same time they did a great job at explaining that gap where Nagisa was dead. I congratulate Key/KyoAni for bringing us such a beautiful anime and I hope that they make many more series that are just as good as Clannad/After Story.

For a recap episode this was surprisingly good. I liked how they made it a story told by Tomoya to Ushio. They summed up the last 40+ eps very nicely too. This recap also makes it easier to see the whole plot and how the individual arcs connected.
The bonus scene at the very end was a nice touch. It seems like it takes place directly after the end of ep 22. Fuko finds a sleeping Ushio (Nagisa and Tomoya brought her with them to have a picnic), they play a bit, Fuko falls asleep, and Tomoya tells Ushio a story (This ep).

For a recap this was about the best I've seen. Still its a recap, its not as fun as watching events actually progressing. Also liked the scene at the very end because it really glued the ending together in my mind(if that makes any sense).
Fuuko is almost like their 2nd daughter in that scene, much like spirit-Fuuko was. :D
Well Fuu-chan wanted to have a little sister, and while Tomoya wouldn't allow her to steal Ushio, Nagisa would probably be more than willing to add Fuuko to the family...considering that Fuuko spaces out while being hugged by Nagisa as well as while hugging Ushio. A Big Dango Family for Nagisa.
Its. Finally. Over.
I want to go to a corner and cry like a baby, but then, that would tarnish my feelings for the series, one of my favorite animes I ever watched. It was an amazing ride, and it was truly a joy to had the chance to watch it, as I almost would have not watched if not for a friend who really pushed this series unto me.
The final recap episode was well done, and was exactly what I thought it would be. KyoAni did a great job summarizing all that material in just 20 minutes.
And is the piano version of Nagisa/Dango Daikazoku/Chiisana Tenohira in any of the albums?
If it's the one starting at around 09:50 mark, it's
Haha Kara Ko e Uketsugareru Chiisana Uta

(Lit.translated as a Small song passed on from mother to child) :)
Nice recap episode. IT wasn't that bad I had expected to be.
This is surely the most anime title that enjoyed so far. Man, I wish I could watch more anime titles in the future where 2 main characters get married in the middle of the series. (besides of Dragonball)

Wow, I started watching this episode, expecting nothing good at all. I'm glad KyoAni decided to surprise me.:)
I'm glad they showed how Tomoya remembered everything that happened after Nagisa died. They kind of left that open in the game.
The recap episode made me miss season 1 again. Season 2 was really good and emotional, but season 1 made me love this show in the first place. The interaction between the characters, the humor, the sadness, the fighting over Tomoya.
Ah, sad to know that it's really over now.
8/10
A better episode than what I expected from a recap episode. It rekindled a bit of nostalgia for the first season and helped to connect the dots together.
Nicely done.
I haven't re watched ep 16 in AS since it was released - yet seeing the moment of Nagisa's passing again still brought tears.
I will miss this show. Not many stories have had this emotional impact on me. This episode tied it all together nicely.
I guess now that the series is finished, I will have more time to dedicate to study - unless something else good comes along ;) Anyone have any suggestions on any good series to follow up Clannad with?

If he can remember the time when Nagisa died when it supossedly never happened, why he can't remember Fuuko from the school?
Nice episode, Clannad in cookies.

Nagisa did die, and only afterwards, Tomoya got sent back to that fateful day.
However, it has absolutely no effect about Fuuko considering the nature of her first appearance.

This was one of the best recaps that I've seen. It's a whole story of Clannad compressed in one episode. For those who have been following with the series, it's a nice concluding episode so people can let go now.
I personally can let go now. :D
Just noticed something that I haven't seen mentioned yet - if you compare the title cards of ep 23/24 with 22, the light orbs weren't just positioned randomly, they are a sort of constellation tracing what they are to become.

I was conflicted about this episode being just a recap but it served it's purpose in reminding me what I liked about this series in the first place. I know I've been hard on After Story (The whole part about Tomoya "Recalling a dream" really drove the point home for me what I disliked so much about episodes 16-22.) but all the material about the first season brought it all back after having not seen it for so long, it's a good show indeed.

Let's just give him a 1015 combo. Nandenayo...... :eyespin:
Actually I was wondering if Tomoya was remembers Kyou due to the time they spent in the gym shed (and Ushio was so close to becoming Tomoya and KYOU's child.......) rather than any other event they had together. Kyou in bloomers and sweatshirt, lying down in a promiscuous position, then sitting up and looking so shy is surely an epic turn on for any guy.
Though it puzzles me why Tomoya never mentioned how Kyou and "that Sakagami girl" fight over for character dominance constantly (Ep 18 and "Because you can't make up your mind!"), with Tomoya as the judge most of the time.
EDIT : It is not the first time the piano version of Nagisa that appeared, it did too in S1 Ep 20, at the end of that episode before the ED.

Wow I didn't know that it was actually #5 but calling the series overrated is subjective. In my opinion, Clannad deserves to be in the top 5 anime in any list considering all the emotions this series puts you through. I actually believe that this series rivals some of the best top-rated anime out there. I haven't had an anime control my emotions this well in my lifetime. Of course this is just from my perspective :heh:

I am very sure people would agree that this entire series is one of their top 5, because of how it actually portrays humanity and emotions as a whole, and on the theme of how family is important, not just the immediate one. Like what Tomoya said in the end, although the paths they take are scattered, the lives seem to converge from time to time.
Dont get me wrong- -''.Clannad is magcinificient but my numberone key s anime is ''Air'' even its production may be not solid .However, it s my opinion.

For some reason, this episode seemed to give me the closure that I felt was lacking in episode 23. 10/10, simply because it's the last bit of Clannad and it really summed up what was a great anime.

In all aspects i agree with VRMN's post.
The narrative style was perfect. I would've been disappointed if they just slammed a bunch of clips together. but the fact that they put it in the style of Tomoya telling the story to Ushio made perfect sense.
AND they even gave us a bit of extra 'fresh' animation at the end, which i can appreciate.
i give it a 9.5/10
I feel the part where he started to describe the events of episode 17-21, and how he said he remembers it, was important, as it proves the point that it wasn't 'just a dream'. That it did in fact happen. Thus putting emphasis on the whole point of the legend.
A very good recap episode for the whole thing.
I'd have to say better recap than Kanon or AIR.

You Clannad-heads don't know how lucky you are to have all these after-stories and "after-story alternative stories". How much would Kamichu fans pay for a Shoukichi/Miko-chan After? How about a Kisa/Hiro After?
Does that exist in the original material? Not to mention that I don't know how well that would work with Kamichu, given that it wasn't really a plot-character oriented series like CLANNAD (which actually benefits from more air time), Kamichu was more of a setting exploration series. While the characters were interesting, what really shined in Kamichu (as in most true slice of life series and not those wierd comedy hybrids that have come out lately) is the setting, the environment, the overall series feeling. More episodes would actually help to further flesh out that, however the plot was pretty much over and done.

2009-03-29, 15:46
Not the Shou-chan/Miko-chan plot! Maybe that's why that subplot won over so many fans, because the main one was pretty well played-out. In a show that was indeed more about the setting and atmosphere than characters, little samurai-spirited Shou-chan and Miko-chan won over countless hearts. But no, there was no Shoukichi/Miko or Hiro/Kisa (Fruits Basket) after in the original material.

Clannad is my number 1 anime by far...
This recap episode was done excellently. Most recaps make me snooze, this one didn't. Wouldn't of minded an actual episode instead of it, though.
I wish there would be a third season.. original material showing Tomoya's life with Nagisa and Ushio. Or just playing through different arcs, it'd be humorous if the twins decided to "share him".

It may be sitting on my #3 in my top 5 for the anime in the 2000s, Gungrave being #1 and Aria, the three series, being #2. Then it is Baccano and Haruhi. Yes, I prefer to seperate decades in three differents tops 10 for 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. #1. No one can accuse me of being biased against one particular decade (even tho it was harder to come up with a list for the 1990s than the 1980s and the 2000s). #2. I feel it is being fair for the three mentioned anime periods; in my eyes, there was never such a thing as "decline of the industry since a fabled Golden Age".

I wasn't originally going to watch this episode since I thought it'd be a huge mess trying to recap 40+ episodes of story in less than 30 minutes, but then I heard people say it was actually pretty good, and after watching it for myself, I agree with that assessment. I think the episode managed to sum up all the main points of the story succinctly. Definitely one of the better recaps I've seen.
A good recap episode. Won't give it more than 8 though because I personally hate recaps and clip shows.
