I like where this is going... However, I don't know anything about it.
Someone can come with a quick summary of the plot or something?
I mean pirates! Space pirates! Space female pirates! Awesome.
How can this not be full of win?

Hmm....I'd like to know a summary about volume 1, to guess how many episodes this anime will get.
Anyway, Miniskirt Space Pirates? Hell yes.
Depending on the director and the animation studio, it will be make or break for me.
Are space ninjas in it as well? :heh:
No idea.. but if not... surely they are saving that for a later volume!

Miniskirt. Space. Pirates..
This could be an epic win in the making or another juice box.
In spite of the news breaking on April 1st and the craziness of such a thing, this is real. It'll be animated in 2011 by Satelight.
2011 is quite a ways away of course, but I'm sure there'll be plenty more to cause people to call doomsday before then. I, however, will dive into the madness headfirst.

Does this mean it gives the novel more time? So more volumes would be released first?
Reading the summery from ANN really makes me really looking forward to this.
The story centers around a spirited high school girl named Marika. She keeps herself busy with the space yacht club and her part-time job at a high-class retro café. One day, two men suddenly appear and claim to be subordinates of her dead father. They demand that she assume command of the space pirate ship Benten Maru. A privateer ship's compact was made during a war of independence a century ago, and according to that compact, the ship must be inherited by the captain's next direct descendant. Marika finds herself embarking on a new life as a space pirate.
For now, this just sounds like fun. I don't mind an almost all-girls-cast, as long as it's not harem.

Miniskirt. Space. Pirates. Yeah this will turn out great :D.
Quite a ways away though. Will probably have forgotten about it until a few months before it comes out.

According to NeoSam (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?p=2972105#post2972105), the title of this anime has changed to Moretsu Uchuu Kaizoku, and broadcast is still expected in 2011. Apparently this was announced by Satelight at the Tokyo Anime Fair.

UPDATE: According to this ANN post (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-03-25/satelight-to-animate-moretsu-pirates-for-tv-in-2011),
Akiman is responsible for the original character designs for the animation, and Starchild Records is handling the music. Tatsuo Sato (Stellvia, Shigofumi: Letters from the Departed, Shingu: Secret of the Stellar Wars) is directing and supervising the scripts.
Space + Satelight, we might be in for a treat visually. Consider they did Macross Frontier... although I don't expect the same budget for this show.
Saw this on Canyoumoe blog. (http://muhootsaver.tistory.com/1106)
Moretsu Space Pirate is scheduled for 2011 July. -_- Then why the heck did they announce it in 2009?
About damn time.

Well looks like I got something totally awesome to look forward to in 2011.
Btw does Moretsu still mean Miniskirt?
Space + Satelight, we might be in for a treat visually. Consider they did Macross Frontier... although I don't expect the same budget for this show.
I'd agree we probably wouldn't see the same budget but honestly I would think this deserves the same if not more cause just going by the premise alone this totally owns Macross Frontier:D

I thought that the anime will be scheduled next spring. Angela is the most likely artist to perform the opening theme since the music was doned by King Records.
Space + Satelight, we might be in for a treat visually. Consider they did Macross Frontier... although I don't expect the same budget for this show.
Macross Frontier isn't the only visual treat show Satelight have done. Keeping those in mind, i'm sure this show will deliver with what people want to see.

A lot of the people who did Frontier left to form 8-Bit, Satelite also lost a studio who are now GOHANDS. Don't know how much "talent" they have left...

Satelight isn't all that great they have had alot of production problems with their shows often falling behind even Macross Frontier had some eps that needed to be fix/improved animation wise. Engage Planet Kiss Dum was a disaster all around, Kamichama Karin had awful animation that most people in the official thread here on animesuki were people complaining for how awful the animation was. Heat Guy J needed improvements on DVD, Fairy Tail has been a disappointment animation wise, Kiddy Girl-and was a huge joke. Basquash! had problems as well. There almost as bad as Gonzo was if not even worse.
And as Westlo said most of their talent have left to form their own studios. Not to say they can be replaced but...

You've got it wrong, every anime these days has girls wearing mininskirts. This has miniskirts..........IN SPACE :D
oh and Tatsuo Sato being involved is a nice personal bonus. So is Hanazawa Kana though since she's in right about everything these days it's less of a bonus.
Looking at the poster art originally on Moonphase the new title is actually "Mo-retsu Uchuu Kaizoku" which I think means "Hard-working Space Pirates" or "Workaholic Space Pirates".
oh and Tatsuo Sato being involved is a nice personal bonus.
x2. Seems like the right man for the job considering the work he's done with Nadesico and Vandread, both character-driven space operas that I enjoyed.
I'm just a little disappointed that we have to wait until July for this.

Alas according to the third volume's title she's only an apprentice space pirate, and she's cosplaying too -- "コスプレ見習海賊" (although that might not make much difference to you). The fourth volume's title is "漆黒の難破船" which translates as "jet black shipwreck" but Google Translate suggests the more lyrical "Raven Wreck".

Relax, big guy! Nobody's gonna take your miniskirts away. My theory is:
Moretsu (モーレツ) is a funny word. It originally meant hardworking, workaholic. Back in the 50s, this was a highly admired trait in Japan. Through use as a catchphrase for a very successful advertising campaign, it acquired the meaning of this admiration itself, like "Wow, hardworking!".
So in this context, I think the new title means more like "Wow, Space Pirates". They retain their miniskirts.

For a start, the novel describes itself as space opera, but don't expect Legend of Galactic Heroes. And the title has "Pirates" in it, but don't presuppose Captain Marika to go full Captain Jack Sparrow :P . At one point in the novel, you'll be asking, is she's the MC or not :heh:
I'm looking forward to the anime adaptation because, well, the first volume was my first LN that I completed. I thought it was going to be Gundam UC :heh:

The ship has many solar sails, which Marika and her club mates will be repairing IIRC. At the end of the trailer, you can see Bentemaru is performing Superluminal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faster-than-light) Drive

I think this is Marika's mother, Ririka (the change in design from LN to anime is quite bizarre, hard to determine)
A pirate herself, before working at the New Okuhama airport. Marika thought her mother as someone that likes to cosplay because of the pirate attire that Ririka has at home :heh:. Ririka is the one that sew her daughter hat and pirate dress. Sometimes Marika calls her mother, and in some occasions, she'll call her "Ririka-san". In vol 6, Marika saves her mother and the yacht club members
http://i.imgur.com/dU7Lns.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/dU7Ln.jpg)
Chiaki Kurihara, daughter of Kenjo Kurihara (Captain of Barbarossa Pirate). She calls her father ヒゲ親父 = Big Oyaji?/Big Daddy?/Big Boss :heh:, who is also known as Captain Black Beard. She transferred to Marika's school to warn her about the circumstances of the future of Bentenmaru. In last year PV, she shots a flare gun to the customers at Marika's work place, Lamp Cafe, as they are polices and army that come to get Marika. She hates it when Marika and the other call her 'Chiaki-chan". During her introduction at the class, Marika blushes as she regards Chiaki a "Bijin" (belle), and at one event at the simulator room, Marika trips and Chiaki catches her. Marika said to herself that her heart is beating fast, even though they are both girls. Nope they is no implied yuri relation in this novel, except the club President and Vice President
http://i.imgur.com/HKFfgs.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/HKFfg.jpg)
Misa Grandwood. The ship doctor. Ririka and Cain call her "The Blood-soaked Doctor". She also acts as consultant to Marika. In vol 2, when Marika speaks humbly in front of Princess Serenity and regards herself as a 'still learning" Captain, Misa is somewhat upset and said that Marika is a good captain to lead the Benten Maru
http://i.imgur.com/Vj4Xgs.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/Vj4Xg.jpg)
Cain McDougal. The ship helmsman. He infiltrates Marika's school as her class room teacher and adviser to the yacht club. Together with Misa, they invite Marika to be the new captain, as they pass the news of the death of Gonzaemon to Ririka and Marika. They then drink wine, (Ririka permits Marika as it was a special occasion) He is the first Benten Maru crew to make appearances in vol 1 prologue as Mr Nice Guy in a Nice Suit with a classic pocket watch (as seen in last year PV)
http://i.imgur.com/06g6Zs.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/06g6Z.jpg)
Glewell Serenity. The 7th Imperial Princess of Serenity Royal Family. An acquaintance to Marika's father. Making her appearance in vol 2, she smuggles herself into Benten Maru cargo bay. She seeks their help to search for the Golden Ghost Ship. Marika calls her a "Princess that likes to smuggles herself" because of several occasions :heh:. Her sister also transfers to Marika's school
http://i.imgur.com/x5mVds.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/x5mVd.jpg)
百眼 = Hyakume = Hundred Eyes. In charge of Information Analysis and Radar of Benten Maru
http://i.imgur.com/VotpTs.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/VotpT.jpg)
Schnitzer. He is a Battle Cyborg in charge of ...battle :P. A similar character was in ARIEL, one of Sasamoto Yuuichi's earlier work
http://i.imgur.com/dAEAcs.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/dAEAc.jpg)
Courier. She controls the electrical weaponry of Benten Maru.
http://i.imgur.com/UtsbPs.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/UtsbP.jpg)
三代目 = Sandaime = The Third. His headband is a dead giveaway. He is in charge of Benten Maru's engine.
http://i.imgur.com/Qmj1Ts.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/Qmj1T.jpg)
Ruka. The navigator. She wears black cloak and possesses a crystal ball.
.....In short, they all become younger as compared to their LN counterparts http://www.laymark.com/i/o/03.gif. And I'm going to keep Marika's character for a while. Nothing grandiose, but still enjoyable, like other main characters from Yuuichi's novel, which are also females.
In vol 1, Marika is the captain only in the epilogue and the prologue. The main story takes place 6 months before the prologue. Volume 1 main story ends with Chiaki's father saving the club members who navigate the Odette II, where Marika is in charge of communication and the yacht club president, Jenny, at the captain's seat.
That's all from me,as I can't spoil too much in a non-novel thread, and I don't think I can contribute much if there is one (need to reread for details), because of my study and works
I just hope the adaptation will not fall short, just like many novel-to-anime adaptation we have nowadays. And also, I hope the "2012" that Satelight promises won't be "see you in 2012 Comiket" :heh:

Sounds interesting and it seems like a very colorful cast...I look forward to watching and I checked it's NOT a harem.

There is going to be a Pre-Air Event on December 11th at Ikejiri Oohashi 2.5D (Ticket 1000Yen). Director and casts will be attending, and new PV and details about theme songs will be revealed. Edit:
With the announced casts are the same, here are the new ones, (official site (http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/mo-retsu/) updated as October 21st)

Jenny is the 3rd year student and the president of the Space Yacht Club, while Rin (2nd year) is the VP. They are supposed to be in love with each other :uhoh::heh:
All the above spellings are my take. The official one will probably be different :P
Novel vol 7 (http://asahi-novels.com/detail/index.php?IDX=185) will be on sale November 18th
Edit: According to someone who reviewed vol 6 at amazon jp, the person claimed to be of 60 years old. So yeah, the show is supposed to be less in the fanservice department, but the story may not be for everyone. Was LOGH was for everyone? :D

There was a special message (short interview) from Sasamoto regarding the anime Source (http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/mo-retsu/comment01.html)
- Sasamoto anticipation is bigger than anxiety regarding this anime
- The author didn't involve in the selection of seiyuu. He let Satou (director) to do as he likes, but in return "Please make it an interesting story"
though in the 1st novel, there is a description of Marika's voice, which it changed from "baritone to a lively, lisping soprano". This happened when Marika announced the arrival of Bentenmaru to hijack the luxury ship, Princess Apricot, through the PA system :heh:
there are several original characters for the anime, noticeably Kobayashi Wakako (this is from Sasamoto's twitter
- When asked about the concept and theme of Miniskirt Space Pirates, he originally intended to write "A decent Space Story", but if "A decent Space Story" alone, it will become too hard and no one will follow. "Put in high school girl and let them wear pirates suit, and it became soft and reader will be able to follow (笑) (lol)"
- Look forward to the anime

Rin Lambretta:
At the start of the story, she was a 2nd year student and the Vice President of Space Yacht Club. After Jenny left, she became the President. During middle school, she hold a criminal record of cracking/hacking. She is in charge of Odette II Electrical weaponry
Jenny Dolittle
President of Space Yacht Club. After graduate, she was forced into a marriage by her family. On the wedding day, while wearing the wedding dress, she escaped in a Reconnaissance Aircraft to Bentenmaru. She later enrolled into a Space University
January, eh? My pirate-mania should be winding down around that time, but this'll help keep it wound for a few months more.

Kawamori Shouji of Macross, Eureka 7, 0083 etc fame did the design for Odette II. At first, it only has 3-parts sails, before it increased to six, and ended with nine. He enjoyed designing it link (http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/mo-retsu/comment01.html)
I think he refers to Odette II's solar sails, which loosely resemble IKAROS' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IKAROS)s solar sail

Sasamoto always uses female character as the MC. Though there are instances such as 裏山の宇宙船 (http://asahi-novels.com/detail/index.php?IDX=18&LIST=kikan) and 妖精作戦 (http://www.tsogen.co.jp/np/author/1744) where there are male MCs, but the female MCs are more important :heh:
If one is to pick which male has more page-times in the MouPai novels, it will be Cain McDougal
He even "dueled to the death" with Marika in vol 1 prologue :heh:
The main site (http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/mo-retsu/) background images has been updated for quite a time, in case no one notices. Aside from the main casts, I couldn't determine which girl is who, well except probably the first two from the right (Jennie, Rin) and the last one (that would be Mami)
http://i.imgur.com/H8NHe.jpg
So we already know Odette II and Bentenmaru. Looking forward to Barbarossa (Chiaki's father's ship) For a ship that means "Red Beard" in Italian, how did the captain ended up as "Black Beard" :heh:. Sure bring back the memories of Siegfried from LOGH ;_;
Barbarossa saved Odette II at the end of vol 1 where Jenny was at the captain seat while Marika was in charge of Communication.
there is an alien in Black Beard's crew that survived the War for Independence 100+ years ago where the Original Seven were sanctioned by the Galactic Empire and given the privateers licenses
Would be nice if there was some yuri in it too.
Well, a page before the picture here (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?p=3823021#post3823021), both Jenny and Rin did kissed lip to lip with passion, which frozen Marika who came in late to the bridge:eyespin:

Nope no male leads at all...Also an all female cast does not always equal harem. The summery from ANN posted on the top of the second page in this thread even tells you what story is about. A young girl who inherits her dads space ship.

Well if there was a male lead, given its seemingly large female cast it most likely would have been harem, which was why i asked. Pleasantly surprised its not, and just that alone has me interested

The director, Satou Tatsuo had experiences in directing anime with female MC/large female casts and involving space/mecha. I personally recommend Uchuu no Stellvia and Nadesico.
In fact, he is the chief director for Rinne no Lagrange (http://lag-rin.com/) scheduled for January next year

Title: Miniskirt Space Pirates 7: The Pallid Skull Star
The Empire Information Unit requested Marika and Bentemaru to infiltrate and investigate Skull Star, the pirate hideout at the frontier. Is the Information Unit's intention is to exterminate them, or the vast treasure that they possess....?
Edit II
Washio Naohiro (Link 1 (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E9%B7%B2%E5%B0%BE%E7%9B%B4%E5%BA%83), Link 2 (http://www11.ocn.ne.jp/~kiwi/)) is in charge of designing (http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/mo-retsu/comment01.html) Bentenmaru. He said he is a novice (yeah right :P), and he hoped with the Mouretsu Pirates anime, the fans for SF will increase
Washio also did novel illustrations for Japanese and Japanese-translated English SF novels
Edit III
vol 7 is delayed to November 25th :(
Edit IV:
I just noticed the Skull with a Biwa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biwa)sign at Benten Maru's hull. The 丸 "Maru" can be used as a suffix to ship's name Link (http://www.sljfaq.org/afaq/maru.html), so the ship name is to honor the goddess Benten (http://www.seiyaku.com/reference/seven/shichifukujin.html#benten). The seven crews + Princess Gleewell probably refers to the goddess' eight hands, with Marika as the head :P

All the talk about it not possibly being a harem series due to the lack of a male lead ignores the the fact that only guys can have one.
Either way I am really glad it doesn't look its going to be a harem series but a SciFi action one. Though if we do get some Yuri I'll be happy.

I wonder, if this is being based off of light novels, maybe 12/13 might be a natural break point. I do agree I would hope it goes longer. Or at the very least it is successful that there will be sequels to cover later novels.
Speaking of which, I wonder why space SciFi anime series has become rare these days? I can't remember one, at least one that is not mostly a mecha series, off hand for the last 4-5 years. Nanoha is partly space SciFi, but its mostly a magical girl/mecha series hybrid.

Quoting this guy
Moretsu (モーレツ) is a funny word. It originally meant hardworking, workaholic. Back in the 50s, this was a highly admired trait in Japan. Through use as a catchphrase for a very successful advertising campaign, it acquired the meaning of this admiration itself, like "Wow, hardworking!".
So in this context, I think the new title means more like "Wow, Space Pirates". They retain their miniskirts.
When the title "Mouretsu" was first introduced, I read at some random Japanese website that it is "Oyaji Kusai no Title" (Smell like old fart title). Even at Yaraon blog which I took the Newtype image, there is a similar comment. Hope the casts and staffs will not be dispirited in case if the anime does not perform well.
With 2 cour length , we may get anime original episodes
Well there is the Space Battleship Yamato remake next year. And the CGi Harlock film.

So I guess this is the only way they can even attempt to get space opera back on TV eh? :heh: Are they sure they have enough attractive females though?

Because as Kaisos Erranon points out they are sadly kind of a risk in todays kind of crappy, shallow taste, lowest common denominator anime market (which is slightly improving in terms of variety with the recent season but apparently still all too quick to mine the Light Novel hit list for hopes of finding something that can be a hit as an anime since very few studios can make anything from scratch anymore let alone a hit) so unless you add a hook/gimmick that's popular with todays otaku...like say cute attractive female characters out the wazoo, a school setting, and/or mecha you're probably just throwing good money after bad and very few if any people are going to be paying attention. It's really sad but anime productions, but for a few studios with lots of capital to burn, are sort of struggling to distinguish themselves from the Light Novel/Visual Novel market (something it existed long before I might add and should have no reason to be so unabashedly beholden to for source material) and what's popular there lately and I'm still not sure it can break free and be it's own thing again. At least not right now.

So apparently today (11-11-11) is Mikako Komatsu (Marika) and Chiaki Omigawa (Mami) birthday. From Moretsu and Satou twitter. It looks like there is going to be an announcement for both Mouretsu and Rinne no Lagrange at their official site at 17:00
Happy birthday to both of them. I enjoyed Joey (Heroman) and Hotori (SoreMachi), and them working with many of my favorite seiyuu in Mouretsu is indeed a welcome :D
Edit: Might as well mention this first. Like LOGH, there is going to be narration to help further the story. The novel is averagely thick because of the explanations. And yeah, expect some high school cliches like transfer student, clubs activities etc. Although it is categorized as Space Opera anime, I hope people will not take this series overly serious like LOGH or expecting ship battle every seconds, because you may be dissapointed :heh:, though the author did say that he let the director to do as he likes

This could be good. I haven't seen much non-mecha space opera other than Cowboy Bebop and the first Captain Harlock TV series, but it's nice to see a new entry in a genre that's out of the ordinary for recent anime.
I wonder if anyone else noticed that when the name of the series showed up in the PV, there was an English subtext that read "Bodacious Space Pirates". I assume that that's the official English title. That's quite a funny title to say out loud.

I wonder if anyone else noticed that when the name of the series showed up in the PV, there was an English subtext that read "Bodacious Space Pirates". I assume that that's the official English title. That's quite a funny title to say out loud.
Bodacious ... sorry, I'm sticking with Miniskirt.
The original title of Miniskirt Space Pirates is better than the new one.
My hopes are a bit deflated after seeing the PV. It's just not as fun or fresh or audacious as I hoped. There's more of the standard otaku fetish moments than I would have liked to have seen. Really, it looks more like an updated Angel Links than anything else.

I'm talking about things like the school life bit and the maid outfits and the nimble little ship. In and of themselves, they're completely harmless, but it means that the show itself is going to be limited in ways that we've probably seen a lot of. Instead of a show about awesome pirate adventures in miniskirts, the show seems more about telling the same old otaku-favored stories with the space pirate stuff serving as a backdrop.

I think the school life bit and the maid cafe was simply to show what our heroine was doing before she left to have awesome pirate adventures in miniskirts. Its quite clear she was learning to become a space pilot so of course its going to show her kicking ass in a space fighter. I have not read the LN but I am sure that its going to be less otaku-favored then you fear. Hell if nothing else its going to be old school otaku-favored.
PV looked good. Lol why did they change the english title.

I caught that, but it's as much how those elements were portrayed as much as what was portrayed that gives the otaku vibes. I didn't catch all the girls in their school uniforms at first, but that's a bad sign as well.

For some inexplicable reason, they changed the Japanese title as well.

I'd honestly settle for a fun romp and thrill ride of a show cause those types of shows are well.....fun. However, why do I get the sense that the actual show will mostly be like the first 30 seconds of the trailer and that maybe we'll get an episode that showcases what we saw in the rest of the trailer once a month tops?
Probably cause at this point after series like Guilty Crown, Star Driver, No. 6....just all the sci-fi series recently that have gone horribly wrong very quickly by using their premises to incredibly poor effect I'm just starting to expect a fake out every time I see a female teen dominated cast. It's almost like studios are now cleverly trying to lure in people like me that are into space opera and sci-fi shows with the vague promise of intrigue and action only to substitute it out for school life style plot lines and characterization at a moments notice. Shows like that of late and genre blends like this have made me kind of distrusting of the actual intent of what otherwise look like sci-fi series. Probably going to be screening this one for a months worth of episodes and depending on whether it uses it's sci-fi/space opera setting well or just choses to slum it with done to death school life otaku pandering stuff I'll make my choice.
By the way if I never see another maid uniform in an otherwise unrelated setting again I'll be much more confident in the shows that I am watching. It's almost kind of become a badge of honor for these bait and switch type shows (again not sure that this is going to be one of them, I'm merely thinking it could be) as well as a warning sign to watch out for. Also I've noted that this trend has also drawn me into a sort of agreement with 4Tran here who is also noticing the same thing of late and voicing the same concern in this thread. We are far from 2 people that often see eye to eye so that kind of assures me that it's not just something I'm imagining either.

I'd wish people would stop judging shows (or have expectations on them) using the dreaded term "otaku pandering". What I'm interested in is to see if the plot has some semblance of internal consistency and the pacing can keep up with the somewhat silly premise. Most of the potential complaints may be valid as well (once the show airs it'll be clear) but they have, in my opinion, a sort of "moralistic" streak I personally don't agree with.
Also, neither Star Driver nor GC can be considered sci-fi shows at all. And I don't plan to consider this show as well until I see an actual episode.

It's not a moralistic streak, it's just being weary of being frequently misled as to the true focus of shows of late and no longer knowing what to expect as a result. Also I don't consider it a dreaded term either, too me otaku pandering has really become a legitimate issue in anime of late cause it forces writers to work things into shows that otherwise have no business being there and it often leads to entire plot lines, character arcs or even entire shows crashing down upon themselves as they run out of time for what they may have been really trying to do or to just go all over the place and meander themselves into a corner because they've been forced to focus on irrelevant love triangles, beach episodes, school related silliness and random moments of cosplay that contribute absolutely nothing to the show itself other than a requisite quota of otaku in-jokes that apparently need to be there in order for these people to consider buying the Blu-Rays.
It's just really concerning of late and I really have no patience left in me for it to happen to another show I should probably find interesting or at least fun to watch. Maybe if I cared even the slightest about these things that otaku in Japan seem to find consistently riveting or if there was ever any effort to deviate or put a new spin on them it'd be fine, but I think if I did have an interest in these tropes even then I'd still probably be tired of seeing them in like every other show by now. Meh...just gotta cross my fingers, this really should be a show I end up interested in so the ball is purely in Satelite's court here.

I rather agree with xizro345, I really wish people would stop with the "otaku pandering" cries based on PV of shows alone, or at least until someone who read the original light novels weights in. While yes people that worry that a show called Miniskirt Uchuu Pirates might turn into an otaku wank fest have a valid point. Hell I worry that the it will degrade into a load of pointless, plot-less fanservice too considering the name, but can we please wait until the show starts airing. I am honestly not expecting a hard or deep SciFi setting from this show, but some nice SciFi based space action and characterization. Hell I think there might be the slice of life stuff people are worrying about. But its going to be slice of life about a Japanese high school girl who captains a space pirate ship!
Maybe its because we have different expectations for what makes a good anime, but I am rather interested in this series, actually more so since the PV. And I hope it will surprise and please the people that worry about it being pandering.
Lets give this show a chance and if it sucks, we can drop it and hope for better next time.

It sounds moralistic to me. I tend to judge shows on their own merits, not on the demographics they're aimed at. Despite strongly hating in general harem-type shows for example I enjoyed stuff like Infinite Stratos, otaku-pandering or not.

Aside the fact that I'd rather avoid using the term "otaku" as I still use in the original, negative meaning, most of the issues you highlight are simply bad writing. I really don't care about the reason, bad writing is still bad writing and I don't plan to go on a rampage on the reasons behind it. If Pirates fails in my eyes it'll be its own fault, not because of the Evil Industry Practices behind it.
Aside that the trailer was pretty much light on fanservice so that's a good sign.

Why do people continually fail to understand the difference between a projection of expectations and concerns and a full on assessment and pre-judgement of an unaired series?
Also funny you should mention Prince of Darkness xizro because that Nadesico movie is a good old-school example of what goes wrong when you try to pander too much and allow your plot to meander as a result, though it had other issues as well like totally scrapping the characterization and tone of the series original cast for whatever the heck that was supposed to be in the movie that claimed it was Akito and co. If I recall one of the other big things they tried to do with that movie was give Ruri the spotlight and turn her into this goddess like character since she was a breakout character in the TV series and as a result they basically made her into this total Mary Sue character that everybody borderline worshipped and was in awe of and she had maybe a fraction of the personality and wit that the TV series character had. As a result they kind of destroyed what was initially charming about her character and dragged down the whole movie.
That's another issue I've been having with anime of late, this push to create what I've come to call "goddess characters" at the expense of plotting and consistent characterization (there's one in motion right now in Inori Yuzuriha from Guilty Crown if you need an example) to be merchandised towards otaku and otherwise, but that's another issue for another situation entirely. I'll just say that maybe if shows were the same length that they were back in the 80's and 90's (26-50 episodes) this wouldn't even be an issue because then you could do all these little panders and still have time to tell your story and develop the characters, but now time for stories to be told in TV anime has become incredibly tight and any time used on doing these things I've mentioned can come back to haunt a show.

Why do people continually fail to understand the difference between a projection of expectations and concerns and a full on assessment and pre-judgement of an unaired series?
That's because I usually don't have expectations. I pick series on general synopsis, the trailer (but not always) but I refrain to get "hyped"/"angry" until I actually see the series. Also it was a more general discussion since I don't like the abuse of the terms "moe" and "otaku-pandering" I see in English communities, that comes of blasting a series before the actual airing, like in this case.
Let me clarify my position. Unlike Kaioshin, I don't necessarily have a problem with otaku shows or otaku pandering. In moderate doses, these elements can make a show entertaining. Indeed, the main reason I paid any attention to this show is because it was audacious enough to have the word "miniskirt" in its title. That promises that the creators won't take themselves very seriously and that they will try to stuff the show with amusing adventures. Any otaku-centric elements that contribute to the show's premise and general feel are acceptable and even welcome.
What I find troubling is when elements are introduced that seem to detract from the central appeal of a show. And this is what I'm referring to when I commented about the "otaku fetish" in the PV. I've seen a lot of shows that go down this road of trying to appeal to otaku using methods that don't work very well with the rest of what they're trying to do. This approach also tends to have the side effect of limiting the stories to the same ho-hum scenarios like those found in all sorts of less interesting shows. The current prime example of this today is Ben-To - it was a fun show that's become a lot less fun since it stopped adhering to its strong points.
Also, neither Star Driver nor GC can be considered sci-fi shows at all. And I don't plan to consider this show as well until I see an actual episode.
I can see purists objecting to those shows being labelled as science fiction, but sci-fi seems to work pretty well.

Otaku Pandering
I stopped reading right there. What makes you think there is going to be "Kaioshin-sama-pandering" or "Foreigner-pandering" in the first place? Or may be I'm just forgetting here is a English community site
Well, part of EP 1 can be viewed immediately after the event this coming Sunday. If it follows the novel, you'll get to see the scene with Marika and "Mr Nice Guy" clashing swords (The trailer even contained the lines from the Prologue) . Following episodes until they are done with Novel Vol 1 will showcase the events in Marika's life before she finally on the captain seat. But the trailer did show characters that only came in vol 2.
There, I spoiled it already :p
These are some of the negative reactions from 2ch and Japanese blogs
-古臭い
- Mouretsu will compete with Rinne to become the worst anime of 2012 wwww
- Give me Stellvia 2 or Nadesico S2
- I want to see ARIEL reanimated and/or Yousei Sakusen animated instead
- Crossbone Vanguard!!!!
- If this sells more than 5000 copies I'll quit being anime otaku アニヲタ
Whether these are trolls or serious, reading those comments from so callled "Otaku" is somewhat easier on me than comments in English community like "Stop pandering to Otakus"
Also, linking this person, Fukushima Masami [JP wiki (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%A6%8F%E5%B3%B6%E6%AD%A3%E5%AE%9F)], [wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masami_Fukushima)] because Sasamoto honors him in vol 4
Surely a question of genre doesn't constitute spoilers, so if anyone's read the books they could tell us where the series fit on a scale of 0 (K-on) to 10 (Captain Harlock).I say the lowest is 5 and the highest is 7 (my opinion entirely). Haven't read vol 7 yet, but since there is no clear Big, Bad guy (neither the Empire nor the planets that the Empire absorbed ), the books can be summarized as "Daily life of a Pirate Captain who goes chasing Ghost Ship for a Princess, "Saving her mother and club mates", "Go meeting the backwater Pirates Guild", "Dealing with falling grades" etc.

I would like to say you put how I feel about "otaku" elements quite succinctly. When used correctly, they really do help improve the show. Also I kind of agree this series might be getting the attention if not for its unusual name.
What I find troubling is when elements are introduced that seem to detract from the central appeal of a show. And this is what I'm referring to when I commented about the "otaku fetish" in the PV.
I think the "otaku fetish" bits are part of the PV to simply draw the otaku in for episode 01, not a statement of what the show is truly going to be about. Sure our heroine starts out being a school girl and working in a maid cafe as an after school job, nothing really usual, but then she becomes a space pirate!
I can see purists objecting to those shows being labelled as science fiction, but sci-fi seems to work pretty well.
I kind of like the term Soft SciFi myself for not not very hard SciFi shows. I always kind of view SciFi and Fantasy as a spectrum and soft SciFi is the middle region where the two start blending.

Him, so you predict that at least most of the first half of the season will be about Marika's background before she became captain? I that could work. Hell I am really loving Chihayafuru and the first four episodes was mostly about her elementary school years and how she came to love karuta. I wonder, how well known are the light novels? I wonder if they might front load more action just to attract people that haven't read it.

The premier on December 22nd at Shinjuku Wald 9 will show 5 episodes. So I say those episodes are volume 1. This is going to be 2 cour show (if nothing goes wrong). At least we can see Marika get "addicted" to shooting :heh:.
From the interview with HanaKana, she commented how "cool" her character is (Chiaki) for spouting jargon. She also mentioned that this anime is about Marika growing up. So yeah, don't tell I didn't warned people earlier. :)
Also, reading comments from the web, I say this novel is a love letter for those who has been following Sasamoto works since 1984. (Yousei Sakusen, ARIEL, Hoshi kara kita Mono", "Hoshi no Dance wo Mi Ni Oide" being obvious). Oh, they also blamed him and Satou for the change in title :heh:. Well based on the trailer this looks like the more promising project from Satelight compared to Symphogear (aside from that theme song), but watch it turn out the opposite somehow and I end up preferring Symphogear in the end. Still not 100% sure what to expect from either of them since pretty much every Satelight anime to date has left me disappointed on some level so I'll just leave my expectations where they are, kind of low but open to anything that stands out among the two shows.

Well based on the trailer this looks like the more promising project from Satelight compared to Symphogear... I'll just leave my expectations where they are, kind of low but open to anything that stands out among the two shows.
I will admit I am not going in expecting either series to be a "great" anime, but so far both look fun.

Joshing aside,
I wish the characters designs were more like the source material. The main character looks so... I can't explain it. I see her face and I just go "no :/". Hanazawa doesn't help things, either.
I'm okay with the character designs, make it easier to not appear in Megami or Nyantype :P. How many of you realized the animation character designer is the same as Idolmaster Xenoglossia?
Well based on the trailer this looks like the more promising project from Satelight compared to Symphogear (aside from that theme song), but watch it turn out the opposite somehow and I end up preferring Symphogear in the end. Still not 100% sure what to expect from either of them since pretty much every Satelight anime to date has left me disappointed on some level so I'll just leave my expectations where they are, kind of low but open to anything that stands out among the two shows.

Well for me, if what 2ch said was true about 3 volumes in 5 episodes, that I have to "bear" it, and look forward for the original contents. Satou did said in the interview with 2.5d that he wrote the story of Marika's growing up. So if that is not your kind of tea, and you're following "3 episodes rule", might as well drop this.
Also, reading the official character page, Marika is described as "Good character with good grades. She has many friends due to her cheerful personality." Oh, and don't forget "She was living normally until" part :p
According to vol 1, her grades are "mostly A, with B and C can be count". So uhh, if you hated "Goddess" character, you might as well dropped this too. If anything, the story will go according to Stellvia style, where Marika, like Shipon, was already a "good character with good grades". The differences are that Marika's already good with piloting, but don't have a normal family unlike Shapon (no father, and Marika even being serious for not having a little brother it's funny :heh:).
I'll try to translate whatever on LagRin and Pirates page before the series start next week :D
Edit: Looking at NicoNico's comment, I loled at the lyrics "Hoshi no Kodomo kimi wo mamori tsudzukeru yo!" = "Star's Child will continue to protect you" :heh:

Well normally I try to give a series 4 episodes myself. Anyway, as long as its not boring, I don't think I will mind the series starting out covering Marika's childhood.
Also, reading the official character page, Marika is described as "Good character with good grades. She has many friends due to her cheerful personality." Oh, and don't forget "She was living normally until" part :p

Well I rather liked Stellvia, and I liked Shipon too so I think I am good. The only reason I might hate it if for some reason she is in inexplicably awesome at everything without effort or trying.
Also thanks for the translation efforts of the official websites.

^When I said "I'm going to bear it" for 5 episodes, I meant to bear with anything that are going to be cut from the novel. For example, part regarding Marika's grades was a dialog between Misa and Kane who breached the Yacht Club computer record, before following Marika to the Lamp. Kane said this is not his first time going to a retro cafe, as he went with one of the Serenity's family member before (Gleewel and Grunhilde's mother perhaps? And those are some of the many scenes that were cut during A part. Regarding "Be awesome without trying", well she is trying to become the captain of ship full of older people :P
....Eh, you guys do realize that A part can still be view at NicoNico right?
But will she earn the right to fly the Skull and Crossbones?

Edit:
Kane commented how excellent Marika was as a waitress, but in the novel, Marika did tripped and that made Kane and Misa worried about Marika being their captain. Though, Misa did said how nice it is to see Marika wearing Captain uniform
During the dinner scene, Marika did took a sip of the wine. On her planet, under 16 is not allowed to drink alchohol, but Ririka allowed it as it was a "special occasion". And what's with Kane smiling to Marika in the anime? :frustrated:
So I hope Satou will not do too many "damages" to the characters
Here hoping to a fanart of Stan Lee requesting a refill for coffee Jasmine Tea :D

True, Bodacious Space Pirates does seem less likely to give potential viewers the wrong idea. Still Moretsu Pirates is probably for the best.
I think i like the title 'Bodacious Space Pirates' because it has the word 'Bodacious' in it. Dude!
The trailer looked entertaining enough, but I'm reserving judgment until I've seen some.
It could be good, or it could be crap, but if it's crap, it could be entertainingly crap and thus still fun to watch.
Now, with that title, and somewhat off rock music, the Pink hair, reminds me of something for my childhood.

I am disturbed by that.

IIRC, during the LOFT Plus One event, Satou said the post recording interview (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=3862617&postcount=107)was in March. 2ch said the anime was slated for Fall airing, but got delayed due to the quake.
So the production was from last year, and planning was the year before. No use of complaining shitty CG went the money probably went to the Frontier movie and/or the new Aquarion. I wonder what was Satelight thinking when they decide to animate this? Try to latch to Satou's old fame? Sasamoto? (younger novel reader would probably never heard of him)? or the Seiyuu?

@JustPassingBy
Thanks for the tip, but Googletranslate unbelievably butchers the translations on the pages translating the names down to their meanings and not the actual name, making it impossible to locate the character I'm looking for (Chiaki Kurihara).
Ah well...I might just have to wait for someone to update the wiki page. I'm just debating wether I want to watch it and be disappointed if they go with her as the/an antagonist or just pass if by. Ive seen to many anime where they overuse the two cliches I hate most in anime
1) An antagonist thats the same age as the villian or just happens to go to the same school.
2) Best friend turns villian.
Id just read the manga, but from the stuff Ive read they've changed A LOT between the manga and the anime. That and B&N doesnt carry it.

And what's with the "Kawaii"? Marika was supposed to say "Bijin" Totally not lesbian
Plus point for the staffs because they managed to make the part at the Lamp funnier than it should.
I'm already seeing people saying how boring this episode and this series going to be. Good for me then :P
モ(バイ)レツ - It works. Though if the title had stayed "Miniskirt", I wouldn't have minded. A little bit of ridiculousness is the oil that keeps anime novel. That said, I've found my angle for this show before it even started. If Symphogear occupies the tail end of the slot, then this shows occupies the start. Now all I need is an anime that combines the themes of Americana, drug metaphors and space exploration. Not necessarily in that order.
Now, onto actual content. That was a pretty interesting first episode. Not a whole lot of pirating done, being mostly exposition, but what exposition there was was presented in an interesting way, and the show's created a nice semi-futuristic world, with technology similar to ours, just a little fancier and even more touchscreeny. But for every group of pirates, there's a Basco somewhere in their wings. And I'm still waiting to see if this crew has a Donny.
Really, I'm going to get all I can out of this angle.

A slow start, but the series is supposed to be 26 episodes so they can afford to have actual exposition instead of jumping straight into the action.
I'm guessing the letters of marque are the only things keeping the war from officially ending and the governments on both sides are trying to stop Marika from becoming the new captain.
The subs said Marika's the captain's only daughter -- is that a clue?
Why is it that as soon as I saw her walking in, I knew she'd be voiced by Hanazawa Kana? :heh:
This was actually surprisingly more entertaining than I'd thought it would be. I wasn't intending on watching this but I will now.
Obligatory:
pW3bREIGw94
Obviously in this alternate world Roy Mustang did indeed become Fuhrer and instituted a dress code that was handed down as a holy tradition, even extending to female officers in space.
Actually I watched this without any clue what it was, just happened to see that there was an episode 1 out and decided to check it out blind.
It was... interesting. The character design made me think that it would be horribly cheesy and bad. The awful over-the-top "pirate clothes" of course, but also the school girl outfits and character designs were also... I don't know... off somehow. Cheap. Not as smooth as it should be.
However... once you get past all that:
1: The plot is not bad. A war of independence supported by privateers (the "pirates" are actually privateers, not pirates), some kind of inheritance laws govern inheriting privateers. A main character who has a missing father is revealed to be a special person. Dangerous events force her out of her normal world into a big adventure. Some pretty basic plot lines there but actually executed rather well.
2: The science so far isn't bad. Knowledge of basic space physics such as aerobraking and so forth demonstrated. Which is encouraging. Also, the "everyday technology" was incredibly cool, and you can actually conceive of these things happening in the near future. I happen to know Microsoft is working on some of that stuff right now.
3: Most important the characters are already being established in the first episode. The main character is still a blank slate so far, but that's normal. Other characters are being established. But to me the big clue that there might be something worth watching here was Mami.
Mami is the best friend of the main character in her normal life. Usually such a minor character would get hardly any characterization, and is soon left behind as the main characters move on to more interesting things. Yet with just a few lines and a couple scenes they've already fleshed out this minor character as someone interesting. Enough that I'm actually hoping Mami get to go along on the big adventure with her friend the main character. She'd make for some good comic relief.
Is this going to be the great anime of 2012, with deep philosophical insights like Madoka was last year?
No. But it does look like it might be a fun show. Although I suppose it could still run off the rails. Approved to watch the second episode. Hopefully it will turn out to be fun, even if it's a bit silly.
I also can't help but laugh at the English title "Bodacious Space Pirates" I can't decide if it's worse than "Miniskirt Space Pirates" or not.

Thank you for the rundown of the characters!
I'm glad to know my expectations of this show was correct. A great sci-fi anime and a tribute to old space opera animes.
I got hooked with the 1st episode, the characters are interesting and the story has potential. Can't wait for next week!
Awesome, was totally looking forward to it for this. :) Can't wait to watch.
So freaking glad this is getting a full 26 so it can be a bigger story and adventure and they can build the scifi setting like this.

Obligatory:
Obviously in this alternate world Roy Mustang did indeed become Fuhrer and instituted a dress code that was handed down as a holy tradition, even extending to female officers in space.
Wow! was the dub for Mustangs voice ever ugly, maybe I won't buy the series after all..
I really quite enjoyed episode 1; and MarikaxKurihara seems pretty shippable, so visits to pixiv will be even more titillating in a week or so.

I can't comment too much on this show yet, it seems interesting, with some pleasant character design, loving the MC long spiky hair. I wasn't expecting too much, but it was entertaining.
That was quite fun. There is definatly a bit of an oldschool feel to it.
My brain tells me I should be hating all the CG but yet for some reason it works,I really like the show's looks.
I also really liked the main character and I feel that's strongly due to Komatsu Mikako's performance, first time I hear her.
Definatly looking forward to more

That was a lot of fun.
Oh man you guys were right with early feedback on the ep, this felt like exactly what I've been missing and hoping it would be, that bit of oldschool but updated, big scifi action adventure show with top notch modern visuals, we haven't even gotten to space yet and I was locked in by the natural pacing and nicely realized scifi setting and tech for the setting and quickly likeable characters. Marika pulled off being the MC quite well in the premiere and I love her design.
Really loved the music track that opened the episode! Nice supporting background music for the light stuff, loved the bits of more noticeable music throughout and towards the end, can't wait to hear the bigger tracks as we go forward. Like ShioiRyu, really got into the up-beat OP/ED.
I felt the old school when the thugs in suits all showed up with that music playing which was great and I couldn't help but laugh and smile at it. And the shootout with Chiaki eying the fake and cut to Ririka, who I also really liked and had a cool design, in a military uniform was a nice tease of the next stage of the show. Plus the preview teasing we're about to hit the space stuff..
Man I miss shows like this.
This (obviously potentially since we'll see once they get into space and get the real space action but with how like-ably they handled one of the hardest parts I'm quite hopeful) and Last Exile: GnF have finally delivered the action adventures we used to get a lot more often, feels great getting two of these in back-to-back seasons.
Wow! was the dub for Mustangs voice ever ugly, maybe I won't buy the series after all..
Hmmm...I'll just let that one pass for crazy talk or that you're someone who never saw more of FMA in dubbed form since english dubbed Mustang is badass.

I was not really sure what to expect, but came out very impressed. The character art reminds me of Full Metal Panic. I guess the overall feel is reminiscent of FMP and Nadesico, and I loved both of them. Eagerly awaiting episode 2!
Also... the transfer student, and her entrance, were very Madoka-ish.

Yeah I liked it, I wonder if it was the sharpness of the designs. Director is the guy who directed Nadesico too according to the staff list, not surprised it definitely felt like a really skilled long time director did this, feels he's still got that oldschool scifi love.

Marika is the only daughter. Didn't really like Horizon so far (but I'll probably give it another go due to liking shows that kind of scale) with that lead and the ridiculous fanservicey designs getting in the way of the potentially great setting and large scale story since the storyline prior to it airing certainly had me with different expectations of the character art rather than fanservice fest but I totally agree with this. It's like if a show doesn't blow it's load spoiling every plot thread and type of action it's got within the first ep or fanservice all over the place... nothing's allowed to start from the beginning and build anymore.
This isn't a competition. I'm not really sure how you can be "right" in watching a show.
That's true but still boring after one ep even with the obvious teases of action and things to come like in this ep in both the OP and towards the end of the ep and that preview (just look at the OP of this show and all the different space locations and big ship scenes), we've just scratched the surface of the big action adventure part.
Clue for?

Clue as in "only daughter" isn't the same as "only child." The way it was phrased in the episode left open the possibility that Marika has a brother who's being passed over for some reason, but from your description it sounds like an oversight in the script rather than a clue.

Well, that wasn't much of a first episode, too much slow stuff and girls eating desserts that really falls under the cute girls doing cute things that I don't really want yet. It'd be better in the middle. Also, the OP is terribad.
Plusses included the BGM and no crappy fanservice despite the title. Oohh, tasteful?
However, it does have a kuudereish glasses chick voiced by KanaHana and that's enough to convince me to stay as they'll probably get into the action. :D

Well that was about as slow moving an opener as you can get, but ultimately pretty amusing, then again maybe that's just low expectations taking hold. Still the cast gives a good impression in the first episode by at least being likeable and amusing in their interactions and I kind of like the idea of piracy being a sort of legacy thing with Marika's mother being a legendary pirate hero and Marika being asked to follow in her footsteps. I could do without maid cafes and schools in my space pirate anime, but alas I'm well aware of the era we live in now and will probably have to be willing to make some concessions since this is after all based on a light novel.
Where I won't make a concession though is the opening. Hyadain should never be allowed to do another anime theme ever again because I swear to god they all just sound like horrendously off key noise and lack any rhythm and musicality. It's like Ali Projects second coming with this guy...just really atrociously awful...thankfully it can be skipped though.
Stand out character was probably Chiaki. Something about characters that are just so stoic and always seems to get some sort of grand entrance gets me chuckling. I can see Marika being a fun character in the future too with her sort of ditzy but earnest and energetic attitude that kind of reminds me of Noriko from Gunbuster!
Now what we need is for plot relevant stuff to start happening and consistently for about a month, which is something a lot of shows have struggled with of late I've found....especially ones based on light novels. Just start and keep up with the content, keep it amusing and fun and we'll have a nice little winter show on our hands. This first episode unfortunately doesn't give me the best of hopes that interesting stuff is going to start happening any time soon though. It's one thing to have a slow stretch after about a month, but too have a slow opener where almost nothing happens except some vague introductions to the back story...that's a warning bell that will have to be silenced in the follow up and quickly at that.
This seems to be a keeper for the new seasons. Quite refreshing to see a show with some plot potential in a long while, with the last being Space Pirate Cobra...

Chiaki stole the show for me. I've always preferred HanaKana in a stoic role, and that one piece serafuku complete with zettai ryouiki, on top of eyeglasses and long black hair? Hit almost every moe element I have. Makes her character definitely to be the most mysterious of the lot, especially since she has the same last name as another pirate in ED. Which begs the question, if Chiaki is the daughter of a rival pirate, why save her at all?
Only question is, will the show provide even a smattering of shippy material to keep me interested? Scanning the OP/ED shows no candidates unfortunately. :heh:
This is a show that would naturally have plenty of ships in it.

I don't like how Marika is a clueless pink haired stereotype. But whatever. Chiaki alone made up for that. :D

Huh I liked how Marika actually didn't feel particularly clueless or brainless and she actually displayed brains in the simulator just as much as skill for stuff like piloting and watching and intelligently using various information gauges and using the information so I didn't think she came off as clueless or a hothead who doesn't think, except for with the thugs in the suits at the end for the comedy.
and no crappy fanservice despite the title. Oohh, tasteful?
Liked that too, was quite pleasantly surprised. Only thing I could have done without perhaps would have been with her working somewhere other than a maid cafe but they were surprisingly understated and quite tame with it and actually made it come off as a cafe and less of being there just for camera to show the maid outfits.
The thug scene was pretty amusing and liked the moment where her friend popped up and shuffled/flashed over to Chiaki to take her order lol. Chiaki's moment with the desert was pretty funny. Marika was my favorite in the premiere though.

Speaking of this I liked that the creators naturally developed it to give her a time where at least she was able to do some researching (for a non-coincidental reason for a change too) which I liked so she'll at least have a reason to know at least a little bit about it, as you said I kind of hope she doesn't just "get" how the ship works best and instead hope they have to teach her a bit about the ship and how their piracy works.
quite an interesting anime. I really want to know how pirates can be legal. How can it work in this universe?
Look up the history on "Privateers". This is something I managed to pick up from... I believe... Civilization III. There was a unit called the "Privateer"; and with it, a player was able to attack other ships without war declaration. In an essence, it was "legalized pirating" in order to disrupt trade of rival nations.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privateer
And what do you know -- in that Wiki entry... the first thing I noticed ASAP: "Letter of Marque". Thus, likely the inspiration for this story. I feel cool now.
So, now, the notion of "pirating" isn't as evil as the current media makes it out to be. What a load of bullcrap the MPAA and RIAA has been.

I have not watched the episode itself yet, but I saw the OP and ED. The ED is kind of forgettable to me, but definitely not bad. It sounds kind of refreshing, actually. Wow, this episode had reasonably-well-grounded characters and a almost-sort-of-believable setting when I was expecting an explosion of pantyshots, Gainaxing, and insane troll gibberish. I can see myself becoming a hardcore Marika fan as the show goes on. Chiaki seems targeted at fans of HanaKana's Kuroneko voice, which I'm not complaining about. I have confidence she'll get more development soon. The direction of the "action sequence" in this episode sucked hard though. It would probably be more accurate to call it the "inaction sequence with flashing lights". The OP was the second worst part of the show after that.
I like the slowness though. It's my opinion that the best part of pirate movies isn't the piracy, but rather the pirates themselves, who are often unique and very colorful characters. The actual act of piracy ("swashbuckling"), on the other hand is pretty much the same whether you do it via land, sea, air, or space, with burly sailors, Orlando Bloom, or miniskirted schoolgirls. So I'm glad that this show is developing characters and trying to explain the setting in the first episode rather than doing some cheesy piratey action sequence and fanservice explosion like I feared.
I now plan to watch this all the way to the end. (Disclaimer: My anime watching plans are about as accurate as weather forecasts.)

This, I actually really enjoyed the "slowness" and real introduction and getting to know the world and characters. So glad the show was actually the thoughtful type and not the panty-flashes all over the place type it could have been.
I hope I'm not giving them a pass (guess we'll see next episode looking at that packed preview) but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt since the rest of the show looked so good and it feels fitting with the touch of oldschool and say pretty sure they purposefully obscured showing the action shootout scene this one time and just hinted at it with the beam blasts since Marika didn't get to really see it either keeping her head down and closing her eyes and covering her ears and keep up Marika's atmosphere and give next time a little more as Marika starts seeing it by starting understated before breaking out next ep which doesn't really happen anymore.
This chief animation director is no stranger to awesome action so hopefully that's the case and it's no wonder the show looks good (and hopefully will continue to when we get to the action), this guy was the chief animation director on the gorgeously animated Big O, and worked as animation director on various episodes or parts of Bebop, Mai-hime, Inuyasha, Trigun: Badlands Rumble, the Bebop Movie, and even an ep of Tiger & Bunny and more.

Eh? While the anime line is the same as the novel "長子" (eldest child), but rereading some pages after that, Marika actually said she doesn't have any siblings "兄弟" (pg 56)
Or may be the director has something different in mind that can be used after finish adapting vol 3.

A privateer is a private person or ship authorized by a government by letters of marque to attack foreign shipping during wartime. Which the anime talked about during the intro.
Simply put they are mercenaries hired to do the dirty work for whatever government they are working for stealing enemy goods, sinking ships, etc...
The practice became out lawed in the end of the 18th century when many of the privateer who didn't get paid for their work started turning on the governments who under paid them.
With a title like "Space pirates in miniskirt", I expected the worst, but it was surprisingly good. It does have that "old" anime feel which nowadays feels fresh. I'm not completely sold on it yet since I'm not entirely sure which direction the show will take, but this first episode definitely piqued my interest. It seems like it could really be "Harlock in miniskirt".

Well the anime staff did change the title and took out the "miniskirt skirt" part.
And hell that title would seem inapropriate when I see Chiaki's outfit in the ED :heh:
an entertaining 1st eps, looks like this one will not be too serious
Chiaki looks better in her school uniform...

I would never have checked this out based on the title but after reading some good reviews I didn't want to miss out.
The first episode jumped around too much for me but it has potential: I am getting vibes of female friendship and adventure (not a bad combination). So far Chiaki is my favorite of the girls. I guess I just like those cool & collected types.

wow! episode 1 isn't what I expect. Also her her. It sounded more masculine which is good but it doesn't fit first on her looks but the choice of voice is good.
