View Full Version : Twin Spica
What do people think of Twin Spica, of those who've seen the first episode? I wasn't particularly looking forward to this series, but after watching it, it has become my favorite new series this season! I just found the story to be really touching. What do others think about it?
Who is subbing it and how many eps are released? :o
Or is it even a new anime ? I dunno :p and i dont have the strenght to check at animenfo

i'm still not sure whether i should download the series yet, by the way, is the girl humping tree scene part of the first ep? i might consider downloading the series likewise.
It's being subbed by Anime-Fansubs, ep 1 was released today.
The girl humping the tree is from Popotan, another excellant series :D
From the first episode, its about a little girl that sees a ghost wearing a lion mask, and the little girl decides she want's to go into space because of him (i think). The story will shift forward a few years for episode 2, so I have no idea how its going to turn out. But so far, its really nice.
Here is the AnimeNfo link:

It's about a girl who wants to become an astronaut. This one seems original and I have some hopes for this one.

I hope this is a good space series unlike planets where the plot of the anime doesn't seem to progress.

I haven't had time to sit down and watched, but I just glanced at it after downloading it. The songs are catchy, but I especially love the ending song. It sounds more like the older (80's era) Japanese pop songs ala Mayumi Itsuwa style pop songs. Great stuff. I'll post later how I feel about it, but from the looks of it, I'll most definitely like it. Since, it's so refreshing to see lighthearted stories, especially dealing with reaching one's dreams.
I just finished watching it. I found it very nice. The animation in it was old-ish then the newer stuff. But I particulary like that. I think the Lion pulled me into it, and I also like Asumi's character.
I'll definitely keep up with this anime ^.^
Watched it now and really liked it.
The opening song is unusually nice and at least this episode had that kind of Ghibli cuteness Totoro also had (although I would newer compare the two in anything else).
If you sometimes cry watching anime you'll cry here.
The main character looks kind of plain which is a really nice break from all the "well make all girls look really cute but the we'll have to give one of them pink hair so you can tell them apart" girls in anime I've been watching lately.

Geez. :nono: You shouldn't show that. Some kid is going to emulate that and get splinters in a very uncomfortable place. :dots:

Okay that ending song of Twin Spica really caught my attention and I knew I heard it a long time ago. Finally, found out who sung the song "Miagete Goran Yoru No Hoshi Wo" (Look At The Stars In The Night),well the one that I heard a long time ago. It's from Kyu Sakamoto. Sorry, this is off topic, but its hard to find anime that uses songs you normally don't see associated with anime. The director of Twin Spica has great taste. :) Anime-Fansubs, as well for picking up a great anime. You guys never disappoint.
Okay, its official this is my favorite anime to look forward to every week from all the new anime on Fall lineup. It's so sad! The box/Yuigahama Bay/ashes (you'll see when you watch it) and the Lion doll references were so SAD!
I didn't like it, I watched and found it incredibly boring. I just don't like these drama anime anymore, for me they're all the same. It could get better when she gets to space academy or something. I'll check back here again but for now I kicked it off my hard drive. There are better anime to waste my time with.

I was looking forward to this series as well, and it didn't disappoint. Can't wait until episode 2, where it looks like we'll really get into the main plot. I wonder if Yuuko will still be there...
This one suprised me, first it wasn't so intresting but then I almost cried in the end. I will watch two or three episode and then ultimately deside is this worth following, first episode showed potential thought...
To me Twin Spica is similar to Wings of Honneamise, both of them start at the main character's childhood and they both dream about traveling to space.
I hadn't even ever heard of this anime but I decided to go ahead and download it even though I didn't know what to expect. ^_^ I really liked it, I can't wait for the next episode. It even made me cry.. ^^'
I try my best to download all epi 1 to see what its all about.
twin spica seem a bit odd right now because you have this little kindgardener doing more of an adult attitude. But it seems like it is going to speed forward rather quickly here (according to animenfo.com).
Look forward to it.

Yes, if you watched the next episode preview, it's somewhat apparent it takes place quite a few years later, when she's in middle school. The manga actually started where episode 2 will, putting the events surrounding Asumi's mother's death in later as a flashback. So, the anime simply chose to present that story first.
what a dissapointment from my first impression i was expecting
some mahou shoujo and that guy with the lion head to turn to
a keroberos magic sprite figure then summon a clow rocket :P
Actualy it's an interesting show the art reminds me of ghibli
 am i one of the only people that think that this anime is really really cute? It seems like everyones bashing on it, or thinks its just so-so. I dont know but i think its cute.

No! I really love the artwork's style too. It has a different kind of cute to it than the typical anime cuteness that you see all the time. A more real-life cuteness, if that can describe it. ^^
This anime is making my teeth hurt.
somthing wrong with gainax?

well im glad that there are others that think its cute :) i hope this series ends up to stay good threw the whole anime. Plus does anyone know were to find the manga?

Looks promising. I had my eyes set on PlanetES initially (interest has faded a little) but I was drawn in straight away by this one.
I also like the first episode take on Asumi's childhood.
Let's see how it goes. First impressions aren't everything but they're usually a pretty good sign :)
I also like the character design.

Wow, thank you very much for subbing this series! I'd hate to think that I'd have missed this jewel. It reminded a bit of the glorious days of World's Theater Masterpieces and their adaptations of children's literature classics.
The start of this series was shockingly tragic, completely unexpected after watching the opening! But at the end of the first episode, I was completely sold. In these cynical days, it's so nice to see a character who, after a terrible personal tragedy, doesn't go all vengeful, nihilistic and/or antisocial. I look forward to see Asumi growing into a strong yet sympathetic girl, and fighting for her dream.
BTW, I think it's cute too, but not sugary-ish cute. More of "heart-warming" cute.
Episode 2 was nice, althought Asumi was IMO little too weak, but there is a lot of room for character development. I'm all for Asumi, go girl!
Since astronomy and all kind of spacestuff is close to heart and story seems intresting and warm-hearting, I'm going to put this on my "must watch" -list. At least this series isn't too short, 20 episodes sounds good for this.
Yay, ep. 2 was nice but not spectacular. It was just an intermission between home and the space academy after all...
And yeah, I like Asumi too but I don't think she's weak at all. Ok, she seems alot more quiet and timid than in ep. 1 but thats just growing up I guess.
So far I really like it and to think I almost passed this up. Its very sad in the begining but I hope the next episodes get to be more happy. The preview for the next episode looks good I cant wait to see it. Overall this series looks very promising.

I hadn't heard much about it, but it silently sneaked it, I gave it a shot, and after the first 2 episodes it looks very promising. Yes, it's a bit slow, but so well done, a bit of that Ghibli feel, with a lighthearted series that acctually isn't that light hearted for the most part. Hard to describe, just really weel done drama, not typical highschool or romance drama though, thankfully. Those are sometimes good, but this is a nice change, and even without that is well done!
I watched the first 2 epis, and I have to say I'm quite interested. The first episode I thought was absolutely great. It was a little predictable, but also quite sweet, and it gives me a real warm and "awww" sort of feeling :).
I am incredibly sad for Suzunari-sensei though. Lion-san will never, ever come back again. You have to think about it. I'd be quite sad if
I was trying to get over my boyfriend's death for 3 years and then he appears as a ghost again and everything wells up. ... yeah. (You can go highlight that if yu've watched the first episode. XP)
The second episode was quite awkward though IMO. Some of the drawings were not nice (not the character design - I think it's quite nice really, not uber-cute or anything) because when Asumi turned her head the eyes and wahtnot weren't drawn in the correct perspective... Also when she was chasing Lion-san around ("Ecchi!") it was really quite... um... I dunno how to say it. Also the animation was pretty sub-par for a 2003 series - it's as if this studio is using cel animation (who still uses it actually? O_x). The part where Lion and Asumi are jumping off that ledge onto the road specifically. The first ep was definitely better...
The third ep should come out soon because it's already aired if I'm not wrong. If my hopes for this series are fulfilled, I'll be a rather happy person.
By teh way, somehow I really like the opening - the lyrics seem to fit too, and the tune is... catchy ^_^ The ending was quite unique, it was nostalgic in some way and it's poignant when they use it as one of the BGM as well.

I don't see why Gainax couldn't do something like this...
I'm bringing this topic back to life ^_^
Whooo I'm excited to see 2 episodes be fansubbed. I love the OP so much I watch it all the way through. What did you guys think of Episode 3? I can really tell how small Asumi is now considered to the rest of the girls:heh: I found it weird when the people just quit because they forgot their room numbers. I mean, they went through all of that just quit o_o?
I'm waiting for Episode to download now. Please keep fansubbing this guys ^_~!
I don't think those people just quit. You have to remember that they can only enter their room number once. If they did it wrong in the first place, its all over. To further expand on that, their room numbers were not in order, making it more confusing.
if I was in their shoes, I probably would of forgotten the number once I found the room. Then again, I wouldn't start punching in numbers without the entire team confirming that's the correct number. This way, if the number is entered wrong, its the team to blame.
If I were in their shoes I wouldn't have forgetton my room number, come on how can you forget it, their was a reason why the the guy told each of them to remember their room number when they first checked in.
Anyways I'm really glad 2 episode were subbed and released I was waiting for these to come out. Keep up the good work AF

This series is totally cool, so far I like it a lot more than Stellvia, and Planetes, and that song at the end of the show is totally cool for sure.
Aaaahhhhh T_T Finally episode 3 and 4 have come out, THANK YOU A-F, I couldn't wait ^_^
Well anyway, it's obvious that Fuchuuya has a... hehe, interest in Asumi :P Of course, I think she probably doesn't care. In fact, she's a really sweet girl, yet believeable... Somehow I can believe you really do get people like that.
I've only watched Ep 3 (waiting for 4 to dl) and well, at least the general animation was better than 2's, however I get the impression that the animators (forgot their name, something Tap) are still experimenting with CG. Last episode, the jumps weren't well done and I supose they were still trying it out, and also this episode they used CG for the domino pieces, when really I thought it was kind of unnecessary to have it that long. ^_^;;
Some things were predictable, such as Fuchuuya's actions and the bus people's reaction to Asumi's question as well as Asumi's own roommates, but you can't really expect anything else so... yeah. They almost always have to have a cold type of person who ends up softening up in some similar series or another, don't they.... the first thing that comes to mind is Akira from Stellvia. (Was that her name? The person with - gasp, green hair. The person in Twin Spica ALSO has green hair... which asks another question, WHAT the hell is up with the green hair o_O)
Nice episode though, you can really see Asumi's small size. I think I shall go watch the OP sequence all over again, I love that song (and the ED too!!)... when are the OSTs coming out *_*
Hm, also I found out from somewhere that Twin Spica has only got 20 episodes. That's alright really, though I wonder why its not the conventional 26 or 13. Doesn't matter really!
For real, there was a reason he stated to remember their room numbers. Of course if it were me I would of made sure to remember them. I would of given it a shot even if I couldn't remember it. Maybe the other members knew a part to it.
I still like Stellvia more as of right now, but that may change. The OP rocks out of the whole show. But I haven't found a place as to when or where it comes out. Though I did find a place where a tv sized rip of it is. PM me since I don't know if its allowed if you want the url for it.
I'm going to watch the 4th episode this afternoon ^_^ I hope they develope the relationship between Asumi and Fuchuuya. It was really funny when he said he wasn't watching her all the time. I bet he stalked her just to find out what she does of every second of the day :p
Just watched episode 4.. Another great episode. It seems in the next episode we get to find out more about little-Asumi? ^^ This really is a great series so far though. Too bad it doesn't seem to get as much attention as other series out right now..
As for the remembering room numbers.. I would've wrote it on my hand with a pen or something. ^^; I'd have trouble remembering something like that. hehe.
I want to find out more about the other characters and their past. I especially want to know more about Shuu and Ukita.

That remembering room numbers thing was dumb. Any kid who could pass a tough test that would give a person the chance to join an elite program like that would be able to remember the number of the room they were given. That part is really stupid, just dumb.

Well one mistake and the exam is over but yeah I can't inderstand how they could've forgotten their room number. Asumi remembered or should I say was very confident of her room number because 0350 was the distance to the twin star Spica which is her favorite.

Keep in mind that these are still people that are just getting out of middle school. They're also tired from the exam, and stressed from suddenly being transported to another place without warning. They have a LOT on their minds, and a randomized 4 digit number is quite an easy thing to forget, especially when you see so many other sets of numbers while trying to find the one you're assigned to.
Episode 4 was great. I partically liked the part where Asumi remembered a long ago memory. Dude, I wonder how she survived that o_o; Looks like next episode we get to see more of the chibichibi Asumi :heh: Oh maybe Lion-san will show up some more in this one.
I hope this show gets more attention than it already is. If not this would be an anime never noticed. Which is a shame and all.
Ep. 4 approached Evangelion in psychology-level, three people who haven't even met before locked in small room and frustrating assigment. They are really testing how well you take nerve-cracking and stressful situation.
Even if you know that you are safe, if situation is frightening, it is easy to end it all by just pushing that button.
Heh, putting those domino-pieces in different rows... I didn't thought of that. And I want to know more about Ukita. I really liked when they are not consentrating Asumi all the time (althought she is the main character), but showing also what other people think.
its like rembering your exam seating number, once u sit down, would u still remember your seat number 1 or 2 hours after the start of exam , well some ppl will forget, not all
Well ep5 is out AF is on a roll keep it up.
What a beautiful episode 5 was, some scenes got me teary eyed a little bit.
Like the part when Asumi was drawing her mom in school and when her mom finally could see again and noticed the girl she was talking to was her daughter. Man, What an fantastic episode. I do have a question though, I'm not really sure does this episode take place before or after Asumi met Lion-san. Also, why the hell was he playing with model rockets shouldn't he be on his way to heaven.
ah okami-sama..... Twin Spica have mercy on my heart! What a wonderful episode! Ep 5 was so emotional that by the end of the ep, my dad had to run out to hide his tears. teehee ^_^ this episode had a really buddhist theme to it, like the 49 day spirit trip, and seeing green lights when you die. one heck of an episode! snifff snifff
Wow, this was a great episode this time around. It was touching to see Asumi and her mother in the other world so to speak. And her mother to be able to see again and know that Asumi was her daughter was touching. So I am guessing eveyone who saw it brought tears to their eyes :heh: Thats okay cause it happened to me as well. Twin Spica was definetly worth the wait to download. I think this my favorite out of all the other anime I have seen
hai hai...Twin Spica is most definitely my favorite anime ^_^
I have to wipe tears away too... Truelly a masterpiece of emotional episode.
Most touching part was definetely when Asumi's mother realized that it was her daughter.
Keitaro20: Look back at first episode, Asumi meets Lion-san first time when she is carrying her mother ashes. Of course that is the reason why he wears that lion-mask, I think it would be too much for her if she recognize him.
But that part why he didn't crossed river, I don't know. Is it possible for spirit to remain in "real world"? Or something like that...

Yeah, when Lion-san first met Asumi it was after her funeral and Asumi was carrying her ashes. It was almost 49 days later when Asumi has her accident in the river and that is why she sees her mom in the afterlife. I was surprised we got to see Lion-san's face. I didnt think we would get to see him till the end.

eh... I think we seen Lion-san face in ep 1 or 2 when he takes the lion head thing off right before Asumi's teacher, then he dissappears. I wonder why he can't show his face to Asumi, even when she enters Junoir high he stills wears his Lion mask thing.

Perhaps there is some rule that says you can not show your face in the real world to other people. Of course Lion-san did show the teacher, but I don't believe that she even saw him. I have no idea on why he would be playing with rockets instead of crossing the river. Maybe it was his destiny to meet Asumi and be her mentor. Then when she has grown up to be an astronaut he can truly move on.
I think that Lion-san was in the spirit world to tell Asumi how to get out of it. Plus, he still wants to remain in the material world in order to be a "guardian angel/tutor" for Asumi. Which is why he was just hanging out in the spirit world in stead of crossing over the river (he's still attached to something/someone). Also, it was Asumi's fate to lead her mom out of the misery of being stuck in a spirit world, lingering without purpose. If Asumi did not accidentally fall into the river, then her mother's soul would linger on hopelessly. Too bad Asumi couldn't get to draw her mom's actual face... and freak out her Dad and teacher...hehehe ^_^

You all seem to be assuming that she was really dead and everything she saw with her mother actually happened and that could be true but, the way i saw it when i first watched it was she was never really dead just unconscious and everything she saw was just a dream she had, caused by everything her dad recently told her about the river crossing and what not. And her seeing her mother was just something her mind created to help itself ease the pain of loosing her mother. Her finally seeing her mothers face was one of two things ether just made up in which case that’s not really what her mom looked like or just a really old memory pulled up from the back of her head to remember what she looked like. This was all just what i figured so let me know if any of this made any sense to any one ells and feel free to disagree and/or prove me wrong.
Ok then. You're wrong.
With this show so firmly planted in the "spirit world" as it is it's pretty safe to assume Asumi really did meet her mother.
Just the fact that she met Lion-san there is proof enough. She couldn't possibly have dreamt him up because I'm pretty sure she had never seen him before.

I figured that her mind put him there to guide her kinda the way he has been doing in life but since she probably never saw his face ur probably rite.
I figured that her mind put him there to guide her kinda the way he has been doing in life but since she probably never saw his face ur probably rite.
you people!!! Who cares about assumptions, when you're watching an anime with religious theme going on, you're suppose to just intuitively know!
If you want proof here it is: Asumi is a child, if she wanted to see her mom in her dream face to face, she would. That way she could've just drawn her mom's face during the sunset.... but noooo the mom was still wrapped up in bandages. Secondly, She's too young to understand the idea of "Asumi, don't get on the boat, you survive, etc." and why would she come up with "I hope Asumi grows up to be kind like you" lines?!
Conclusion: it all happened
I'm not really the kind of guy to dig into and overanalyze things like this, but my immediate thought about what happened in ep5 was that it actually did happen. Again I'm not too firm on it so I can go both ways. The only thing I really care about is the actual content in her dream which was very well made and made me feel a little less erm.. masculine.. if anyone figures that one out.
I liked all the details, that the boat wouldnt move when Asumi was on it, that she drew a smiley face on her drawing in the end, and that her mother didn't know the child guiding her was her daughter.
The latter reminds me of a scene in scrapped princess which was also one of the better sentimental scenes I've seen.

One thing that was a mystery to me is that Lion-san told her not to cross the river and go back but she still headed straight for the river. Lion-san didnt even try to stop her.
Didn't Lion-san tell her to go to the river and follow it up the stream? I could be wrong on this, I'd check but I delete episodes after I watch them.
What had me puzzled though, was why Asumi got on the boat. Was it just to help her mother onto it? She did wonder how they were going to make it move.
Asumi wanted to make sure her mom made it across, while forgetting that if she had cross the river, she would die too.

Yup she forgot about what lion-san told her. Its odd how the boat didn't move when they were both in the boat but when Asumi step out of the boat it started moving without Asumi even touching it.
I like to think that the boat didn't move since it wasn't Asumi's time... And when she jumped out of it, boat started to move since her mother was onlyone on board.
Or it was just when she jumped she gave small kick to the boat to make it move.
"Lion-san" told that Asumi could return to real world by walking opposite direction than the river's flow.
I made a little google search and there is Sanzu river (Sanzu no kawa) in Buddhist mythology, it is much like Styx river in Greek mythology.
off topic--
anybody know about the chinese way ?

WHERE's EPISODE 7!?!??!?!?!?!? OMFG.... I thought it would come out a week later but i has been over a week and I need me weekly dose of Asumi... sniff sniff >_<

I feel the same, don't worry it should be released soon. Also you got to remember the subbers are also busy with stuff like the Exams and the fact that its the Holidays. Patience is an essence ne.
Argh... I watched from episode 1 to 6 in a row and it was really depressing. This series is really touching. There were a couple of scenes that almost made me cry, like when she drew her mother in class.
I think Lion-san is sticking around because he really wanted to go to the space. He's one of these spirits that cant rest due to an unfulfilled wish, and fate allowed him to meet Asumi and watch over her, since her becoming an astronaut would allow him to do that (sort of like the relationship between Sai and Hikaru in Hikaru no Go).

I don't think asumi forgot crossing it meant death, I think she just wanted to be with her mom, though she might have forgotten, it isn't clear.
Am I the only one who thinks lion-san stayed for asumi's teacher? They were engaged I think she said... regardless of that they were definately in love... he was still too atached to her to leave... there are several examples of him watching over her... anyway...
Actually, ep8 has already aired in japan, anime-fansubs is just a bit slow... but it's ok, just glad they're doing it for us...
Their release schedule is inconsistant, don't expect it once a week, again just be glad to be getting it, though I too am anxiously awaiting the next episode.
where is 7? doko ni? I'm going to cry..... 2 weeks already........ :( sniff sniff
Lets just think of it this way, at least we'll get to see 2 or even more in a row. That we won't die like we are now +_+;

I have nothing but respect for the efforts of the group that did the first 6 episodes, but seems that group may be encountering difficulties in this new year, as episode 10 has just been shown already in Japan.
I know that fansubbers work on the projects they love/for the love of doing it. I just wish a lot less groups "love" Chrno less and loved Spica more :( This show, for me, has become my favorite of the 2003-2004 Anime season.
Competition in all things, even in fansubbing, improves the quality and timeliness of the end product. Ah well, I guess getting rapid turn around with Mezzo DSA and Planet ES will have to suffice for now (allows me to catch up on viewing some of the more older shows I've recorded and not watched).
I just wish the fear I have that the only group interested in Twin Spica has ceased to be active is false.
AF hasn't announce that they are dropping the series as of yet so just be happy that the only group subbing it hasn't dropped it. Just have some patience, I'm sure AF will be releasing ep 7+ soon.
I really hope that AF doesn't drop Spica, it is one of my two favorite series at this moment (Gunslinger Girl is the other).
Series is a bit childish sometimes (if I remember correctly, it airs 9am in Japan), but still, of the six episodes released so far, two has made me cry.

Trust me - Spica's delay has nothing to do with Chrno Crusade.
I'm not sure when, but they'll probably get working on it eventually.

I think his thought was that if there was as much over subbing on Spica as there is with Chrno Crusade, he wouldn't have to worry about one group taking their time because he'd just get it from someone else.
I would argue that competition hurts the quality of fansubs more than it helps it. For every group that wants to take its time and do things right, there are seven that will rush any old garbage out the door. All that does is make the quality groups rush things even more, or risk falling into obscurity.
The number of downloaders almost directly corresponds to how early an episode is released, completely independent of its quality. Even if you take the altruistic stance that you are subbing for yourself and that the number of downloaders is irrelevant, popularity is still directly responsible for the amount of talent you can attract. Not even the idealists can ignore it forever.
You want something that will improve the quality of fansubs? Try cooperation. If a group wasn't dependent on a single translator, releases wouldn't be held up when he disappears for a month. If all the energy devoted to posting screen shots of other group's glaring errors was devoted to helping edit before the release, everyone would benefit.
So... if you find you're one of the people who gripes about the quality of a release, ask yourself, "What have I done to improve their quality?" If you can't answer that question affirmatively, then you have no grounds to complain.
If you find you're one of the people who keeps asking, "Why isn't the next episode out?" ask yourself instead, "What have I done to help it come out?" I can guarantee you, harassing the volunteers who do devote their time and effort to it does not help.
Obviously most people differ from me on this point, but I couldn't care less when an episode is released. I've easily got over 500 GB of anime I haven't watched. I don't even start watching a series until someone has finished subbing it. If you really have so much free time that this is not the case, try volunteering for a group. In the long run, producing something is much more rewarding than consuming it.
And StarCreator, since you and I both know exactly who's holding up Spica, it worries me greatly that you use words like "not sure when", "probably", and "eventually".

Never said it was because of Chrno (just dreaming in a silly way for some groups to be more "adventurous" in their choice of projects...Stupid me!), I was hoping to perk the interest of some other group to take up the mantle of a project that still appears to me to have become seriously lapsed. If I hadn't started viewing the episodes already presented I would also be happy to hope for the best and await chance that Spica will be released in a few years time on DVD for Region 1.
Unfortunately I am seriously hooked, and as I know even less spanish than japanese (as another group seems to be progressing quite well in subbing Spica in spanish in a rapidly efficient manner), I am forced to await the resolution of whatever "issues" prevent the completion of the Twin Spica project or the somewhat distant hope of commercial release in the USA. As this show doesn't feature fan-service, wacky outrageous fights or harems, the hopes for the latter eventuality is quite dim for the near future.
Oh well. I'd volunteer/do the subs myself if I had any sort of grasp of japanese, I don't. I do think multiple groups insure that a show *WILL* have a great chance at being fully subbed. And competition, I still believe, almost always enhances than detracts from the finished work.

I wouldn't discount the possibility so quickly. Not everything licensed in the US has to be of those genres to successfully sell. From the looks of it, just about every genre is getting equal treatment from the companies right now. I'm currently thoroughly enjoying my R1 DVDs of Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto (Someday's Dreamers).
Twin Spica hasn't finished airing in Japan yet though, and at 20 episodes, it's a bit longer than most of the series recently. Perhaps give it a bit of time... I would love to see a US release of the anime and manga (which is also still running).

I am very glad to see a bunch of groups jumping on to the "Uninhabited Planet Survive" bandwagon after the first (and for the longeeesst time, the only fansubbing group) stopped for an agonizing looooong while at episode 2. I wish...I wish...What I've already said...That some other even more deserving and special show could be shown the same interest/kindness by the english-fansubbing community.
At least till something happens in the english subbed space, I at least have amusment and drama to be had from Mezzo DSA, R.O.D. TV, Gokusen and Planet ES.

But the seach you suggested only showed eps 3-4 by [AnS-SnF] - and the links to the torrents are dead, anyway... Do this group have a web page / irc channel?

Web page? Don't know of any. IRC? No idea where, google for it I'm afraid.
you can try your luck with KaZaA or EMule. Bon Chance!
I've taken up watching raws myself. Again, the most recent episode has not failed to make me cry.
You know, I may as well start watching raws if it comes down to it. I was estatic when so many groups started picking up Uninhabited Planet Survive. Now if I could only push some of that energy to Twin Spica. Its been so long since I have watched an episode. And the thing is that I am actually waiting for the fansubs to come out means something to me.
Its not everyday where I watch an anime and I cry by the end of the first and second episode. Not to mention that it has a great plot and character developement. If I am not mistaken the Astronaut teacher looked like he remembered Asumi's name and picture. I would love to see what happened after that and how the classes are going.
I just realized I am rambling :heh: I want more Twin Spica XD

Probably because he recalled his father's surname, since he worked as an engineer for the space agency or something like that.

It doesn't need more groups on it, it just needs the current group to get a few more eps out.
I'd rather wait forever than see a good show get the standard oversub-to-hell treatment.

If more groups pick it up we have choice and if one group decides to slack off a bit or scrap the project all together their will always be another group to continue fansubbbing the series. Also, if more groups sub it, it will more then likely get some attention it derserves such as UPS. I agree with you about the oversubbing treatment, they really oversubbed Chrno Crusade. I think like 10 groups subbed the first episode or so. :twitch: but if only a few groups pickup this series like 2 or 3 like UPS then I think it'll be ok. Ok I better stop, going way off topic here. :)

This show was underrated by the subbing groups anyway, even if some of the fans were all over this. It's certainly got some solid SF to go with the ghosts and so on.
I also want to see more and wouldn't mind seeing more subs by different groups.
A little fansub competition does no harm. It would be great if at least 2 or 3 groups were to work on it. But maybe if we keep on talking about it and stuff people will wonder what Twin Spica is all about. Then maybe they'll start to watch it as well. I have high hopes that TS will be picked up again. I can just imagine how happy I would be if I were to watch 4 episodes in a row ^^

Sad am I, forced to catch myself up on the backlog of Uninhabited Planet Survival as We Suck prodigously plowed thru UPS in one month to get caught up to Ep. 12 while my favorite show of the season TS languishes unsubbed by any english fansub group at Ep. 6.
*sigh*
Well, time to start downloading what RAWs of the show I can find and have my wife sit next to me to whisper into my ear a rough translation of the dialogue as it occurs, I can't wait noooo longer.
Are there even raws of Twin Spica for groups to translate? I haven't seen any...
I've seen torrent raws of them at LEAST past episode 7 (I think up to episode 9? 10? haven't checked regularly) on the mircx tracker. I'm sure they're not that hard to find...
Note seen meaning I've seen them there, not that I've watched them... I'm still waiting for number 8. >_< Twin Spica's got its fair share of fans but we're mostly not very good at all this subbing business... Isn't it up to episode 12 in Japan already? x_o;; Guess I can't complain, not having actually done anything.
I just saw somewhere that there is Twin Spica 11-raw to be downloaded. x_x I really wanted to I would watch them, but I would rather understand what they are saying ~_~ I'll sit and wait patiently. In the meantime I shall watch the ones that I have ^.^
Yesterday i saw the TS episode 13 raw, (its two months since there are any updates, and i just cant wait any longer) so i try downloading the raw. But no use, not seeded/no sources,.. I cant even get the raw, dammit. Really wish more fansubbers would take notice of this series. Its a great series, it even make me make me cry (episode 1 and episode 5). :(

No!!! This monopolization of a valuable goods is not justice at all! The people are being denied such necessities by the hounds in the Anime-Fansubs government, what kind of a system is this?! Come, comrades, let us take to arms and revolt against these selfish pigs!!! Let us not stand around and be tormented of the memories of back when we had Twin Spica eps...
...well damnit, there are only two conclusions: my english is pretty lousy and unconvincing, and I've been watching too many Rose of Versailles. :)
(...if you think I meant anything in the first paragraph, go be a jerk somewhere else please.)
I hope you're right StarCreator, and we only have to wait a little while longer :D If not I'll really go download the raws... and slowly figure it out, XD.
By the way, anyone read the manga, does the anime follow the manga well or...?
well, i'm also waiting for twin spica to be subbed... it's one of those under-rated animes, along with planetes, ups (no more..) and maria-sama...
i was deciding whether to keep twin spica and after the second episode, manged to make up my mind to keep it... it's so emotion packed.... and when asumi meets her mother... well that's was so touching.. she can't even identify herself...
anyway, A-F, GAN BATTE NE!!! keep it coming!!!

I don't consider these other shows under-rated. Marimite #4 came out last night and there were like 1000 people all over that thing in the first hour; there have been over 2000 downloads today. It's not like noone was interested in subbing the show either; a second fansub group has released their sub of the first episode. Planetes has had several groups subbing it too.

I agree with wao, long wait, glad to see it though. I was considering trying to get one of my groups to pick it up since you hadn't released in over 2 months, and then I saw the platonic chain and was like, oh, they got their translator and whatever issues fixed! PLEASE have some TS coming!
Lo and behold, TS 7! I can't wait for the next ep.
Yeah, ep 7 was pretty good. Hehe, what's the name of Asumi's friend (not the green-haired person, the other girl), she's your typical happy happy joy joy lucky well-off popular-kind-of girl...
When Asumi had to admit she didn't have a handphone... It hit home because I only got a handphone very very recently and it was an utter and complete surprise. However, unlike her, my dad could have afforded one except I really never thought (and still don't think) I need one... Of course when he insisted on getting one he had to get it overseas, unlike some schoolmates who have VERY flashy and VERY new designs which change every 2 months or something. Sheesh.
I feel a lot for her. She may seem basic and stupid because of her kindness and friendliness and still child-like image, but how many of those kids in that school cook their own dinner? And probably clean their own house? And have no mother?... Asumi is actually pretty tough for having gone through childhood with almost no friends. She's stayed happy because of her ambition and her dreams and Lion-san. Gawsh Lion-san...
I can't wait for the next ep too. 20 eps means that there must be something about it to be beyond the typical 13 or 26 eps. Hmm...
Speaking of which, I wonder if anyone's translating the manga (there is one, isn't there? Right? Eh?...)
You know, after this episode I realize why Asumi is such an appealing main character.
She may be shy, but she's also emotionally open and honest. It's quite refreshing.
What another awesome episode. I even sat through the OP sequence since it had been awhile since I listened to it. It was touching to ese Lion-san come and see her off. Its apparent that he obviously cares about her. I hope this wasn't the last time we'll get to see Lion-san, he a nice character ^.^
What was up with Asumi's teacher? Does he know something about her dad perhaps? It also looks like she hasn't told any of her friends about her family.
Whooo I think Twins Spica has 26 episodes. And last time I checked Japan is at 13, so we can look forward to seeing more TS until we catch up.

And have no mother?... Asumi is actually pretty tough for having gone through childhood with almost no friends. She's stayed happy because of her ambition and her dreams and Lion-san. Gawsh Lion-san...
Asumi had pretty tough childhood since her mother is dead and her father works most of the time (his worklist was almost full) so she had to learn independed very early age.
Also good detail was picture of her mother.
At episode 6 we learned about Ukita's (that yellow-haired girl) childhood which wasn't very happy either and I'm also interested at Kei's (that other girl) background, but it would seem that she is one of the few characters in this series that actually had happy childhood, but I will wait and see...
BTW... during opening scenes we see Kei (or is it Kei?) dancing with masked person, I wonder what is that...
just incase people wondered why lion-san didn't go with asumi to the space academy. its not because he's staying for asumi's teacher. he has to stay because spirits aren't allowed to leave the area where they died.

The one thing i like most in this anime is that people actually TALK to each other. Or that people have some kind of empathy.
I was really happy to see that Asumi talking to lion-san about him staying behind...
(
btw: Its seems that ms blonde-hair-bad-mood girl (sorry, forgot her name) had either cancer or some other serious disease. That kind of isolation in her childhood, the fear about germs (hey, closed enviroments arent anymore save or unsafe than open ones if you dont breed fungus in the fringe), the pills she is taking,....
About mr blonde, laid back guy (im really bad with names...): The pin his father is wearing while beating him in the flashback scene, does is symbolize yakuza background or just "really rich" background? Because the way it was presented it should be important...

Yes, there is a manga. 5 tankubon have been published so far. No one doing any scanlations as far as I know.
I'll be scanlating them myself someday(after I finish translating the first volume of Yotsubato), but as I'll be translating them into Norwegian that'll probably only interest a small percentage of Animesuki users...
Hopefully it'll be picked up by one of the American publishers(the anime too!).

As far as I know, Futatsu no Spica manga is not picked up. You might be thinking of Junikyu de Tsukamaete (published as Zodiac PI), where the lead character uses "Spica" as her alias.

Guys, I know Asumi came from a poor family, from the episode when her dad worked practically 24 hours / day just to send her to the examinations. But when Asumi said that she has no handphone and in a dignified manner, something really strike home.
Touching.
And I must say that this is one of the better children anime this season.
Btw, the OP song is out!
Yeah - there's a thread about it in the Music forum, go discuss!
I wonder when the ED will come out: actually, it's an old song from the 60s I believe... If I'm not wrong, Sakamoto Kyu has sung it before (he's a 60s singer), though the title was slightly different: Miagete Goran Sora no Hoshi wo...
http://www.japanorama.com/kyuchan.html This is a (slightly old [but that doesn't matter]) page about the singer, who also sang the original Japanese song Ue o Muite Arukou - this song is known in English in the west as Sukiyaki. A very famous song at that time... and very nice tune, it's so damn nice to whistle to... even though the english and Japanese lyrics have got nothing to do with each other.. What a sad way he died ;_;
Well, it's no wonder the ED for TS sounds so retroish and easy to listen to...
Edit: saku~ya, TS has 20 eps the last time I checked... which is great, it dares to go past the typical 13 eps despite lower production quality. (visual wise)
just incase people wondered why lion-san didn't go with asumi to the space academy. its not because he's staying for asumi's teacher. he has to stay because spirits aren't allowed to leave the area where they died.
Actually ... I've been watching the raws, and I have to disagree.
Just so everyone isn't left waiting in the dark... work on Spica 8 didn't progress as fast as we hoped, and so we won't be able to release it until after spring break is over (going home and stuff). Thanks for understanding.

LMAO, lordlucless! Heh :)
I watched the ep, it was nice, but I wish they'd come up with something resembling a plot soon, and make some things less subtle: the director doesn't seem very good... a lot of events happen some what awkwardly (and the animation doesn't help) and some things are just too obvious.
Go Asumi! You're really that strong and unspoiled and unselfish... wow, she really can run that well...
Seems like the next episode is... anotehr flashback :O
I can't wait to see more about Ukita...
I'm curious to know why Asumi's Physics sensei freaks out when Asumi mentions her surname. Wasn't her father some kind of rocket engineer? Maybe he has something to do with it.
I'm pretty sure it was the same suspicious guy from a few eps ago who was looking at Asumi's profile...
I suspect he's Asumi's father's coworker and he probably got Asumi's father fired or something.
Yes! Episode 8!
Thank you Anime-Fansubs!
I suspect he's Asumi's father's coworker and he probably got Asumi's father fired or something.
Fired? Not sure about that. Would you really continue designing rockets if one falls from the sky and kills your wife?
I doubt Asumi's father was fired, too. My guess would be more along the lines of -
perhaps they were working on some big project together and then after the incident with his wife, Asumi's dad bailed out taking with him his expertise or some other invaluable information/experience.
Or they could go the more typical route - jealousy over the inherent abilities of Asumi's dad or even some kind of a love angle with Asumi's mom. Since, didn't her mom also have a space/rocket-related job?
All speculation really... I'm probably way out there. :P

Oh I'm so happy, episode 8!
From watching the ep, I think it's more likely going to be a jealousy issue since Doesn't the teacher say something about her being stuck up (I forget exactly how it's worded), just like her father?

Oh yeah, you're really going to hate Sano-sensei later...
I think the reason behind his behavior is revealed in episode 11, but my Japanese wasn't quite good enough to understand it. x_x Pretty sure that it does have something to do with the rocket that crashed into Yuigahama, though.

Perhaps Asumi's father was as enthusiastic as Asumi is now and that accitend changed everything. And teacher blames Asumi's father.
Other main issue is Marika's condition and past, I quess that why she was kept indoors (ep. 6) has something to do with her ilness(?), but althought she does have a lot of motivation.
BTW I don't read any spoilers about coming episodes.
Preview of episode 9 showed that it consentrates on Marika. Oh joy!

I think a lot won't be answered until the series goes more into WHY the crash happened and how everyone was involved.

Oooh, anyone else notice they changed the translation for the last line of "Venus Say"? It definitely makes more sense now :)
I love that OP
I've got mixed feelings about that ep...
I appreciate Suzunari's backstory, but Twin Spica is a slow enough story without going into flashbacks. I'm really interested by that last scene though - it appears Marika knew Lion-san when he was a kid. But how? She's around the same age as Asumi isn't she? What's going on there?
And those CGI railway track sequences were annoying.
WOW. I really appreciate Kujira now that I know the translation. Very great song, by the way. But one verse wasn't translated:
優しい記憶に触れようとして yasashii kioku ni sawareyou to shite
私の指先はひどく切り裂かれるの watashi no yubisaki wa hidoku kirisakareru no
that one...
am downloading ep 9 right now.
One thing I have to say about the studio animating this, Group Tac... they seem rather bad at it. Hate to say it, but despite their good choice of not being stupidly mecha and fangirl and all, they really need to work on their animation I suppose. :x And there are times I think the director could have greatly improved on, but that's not what the series is all about. :)
There is a manga, right? is it scanlated?
I'm really interested by that last scene though - it appears Marika knew Lion-san when he was a kid. But how? She's around the same age as Asumi isn't she? What's going on there?

could it be that because lion-san was so desperate to go to space, he turned to a different child to promise him to take him to space. If so, then that would explain why he was away from asumi for a such a long time, although i doubt this as he looked awfully young at the time.

I have trouble believing he would do such a thing.
Now, something is definitely up with this...
There's definitely a big difference in time here, considering that the scenes involving Marika show the rocket base being constructed, and this is made further evident that there is no moss on it in those scenes - while it has been left undisturbed long enough for there to be a little growth on it when Asumi finds it. Also, if we do assume that the boy -is- Lion-san, that does place Marika to be significantly older than the rest of the main characters. Though, her disease may explain why she isn't further in academic progress, and why she was kept at home so much...
NoSanninWa
2004-03-31, 17:01
Obviously, the boy was was Lion-san. We shouldn't even consider that might not be true. Lion-san was sensei's fiancee, and he told sensei about having built a secret base off the train tracks. This isn't even vague.
The only things that we need to wonder about is if Marika might be older than she looks and if Lion-san might have been older than he looked when he was with Marika. I'd say that it is probably a combination of the two.
Markita and Ukita... are they the same person?? I don't think so.
I think that...
Perhaps Markita is Ukita's older sister... can't be mother because the years wouldn't be right.
I could be wrong, but it makes sense to me.
vegitto02
2004-03-31, 19:15
Yes, I believe Marika and Ukita are the same person... isn't her full name Ukita Marika? Which is why Asumi calls her formally as Ukita-san initially, but then asks on the track whether she can call her Marika-chan.
I believe Marika is simply older than she looks. That's why she doesn't want to talk to anyone else, becase they're all younger than her? Imagine if you attended high school with kids several years younger than you -- you probably wouldn't care much about talking with them either due to ego, would you?
Here is my argument:
1) Takano (Lion-San) told his fiance about his secret-hideout before his space shuttle accident and death, obviously... meaning he built the thing several years prior.
2) We also know that Asumi was a baby when the accident occurred.
3) Thus, if Marika is the same age as Asumi, that would mean she couldn't have possibly been born yet when Takano built it (or at maximum, she was just born). Yet, we see that Marika saw him build it, and she seemed to be at least a few years old. Given this contradiction, I can only conclude that Marika is actually much older than she appears. It makes sense with what I said above -- that's why she doesn't want to make friends with people so much younger than she is.
But I guess we'll know for sure (hopefully) as the episodes progress.
Let me know your thoughts on my argument.
Alfzilla
2004-03-31, 22:58
Even if Marika is older then she seems its really hard for me to believe that she is any where near Lion-San's age because he must be what? late 20's? mid 20's at best and can Marika really be anywhere near that age? seems abit ridicules to me.

I think Marika was seeing Lion-san's spirit as a young boy even though he was still alive as an adult.

personally i think its a relative, possibly sister or mebbe even mother.
im leanign towards mother, we dont know lion-sans actual age.
im guessing he was in his mid 20s to early 30's when he died.
and if that was ukitas mom it would provide for her being a highschooler.
heres a written diagram.
lion san and marika build rocket when they are somewhere between 8 to 13.
lion san becomes an astronaut by his early 20's possibly late teens.
marika in that same time marries and procedes to have a child.
Asumi is born. Ukita is Born.
Ukita inherits genetic heart defect from mother. mother possibly dies at around this time. i have no clue, this is just an assumtion.
if ukita as marika had the same congenital heart defect it would explain the parrelels in thier life of isolation. due to the fact that ukitas father and marikas parents would want to keep them inside and out of medical danger.
remember this is all an assumtion on my part. to my mind its all logical and fits. tho ages are not exact the facts produced this far fit my assumtion to me.
also remember when asumi meets lion san he has already been dead for 5 years. since she is in school and she was born while her mom was in the hospital for the accident.
Asumi's teacher was 24 (as she said in ep. 9) when Asumi was around 6 years old. So teacher was 19 when accitend happened, and Takano (Lion-san) would be around that age too and Marika a bit younger.
Asumi was one year old then, so Marika would be maybe 15 years older than Asumi.
She maybe older than the rest of, but that much? Hard to believe...
But I think young Marika (who build that rocket with boy) is Ukita Marika in academy. Was it in ep. 6 where we first see Marika's childhood? That Marika looks very much like Marika in this episode.
... but Ukita's full name, according to animenfo is Ukita Banrikou, not Ukita Markita.
Like I said before... I stick to the relation (sister... or *very unlikey* mother)
Which ep did they say her name Ukita's name was Markita??
StarCreator
2004-04-01, 03:03
She introduces herself as Ukita Marika in episode 3 or 4. Further, in episode 8, we confirm her name is Marika, as Asumi asks her permission to start calling her that (and thus she is continually addressed as Marika-chan from that point on).
Now... I haven't seen the episode myself, but... in one of the final episodes...
(Adult ghost) Lion-san visits Marika's old room. Check Matthew's Anime Blog (http://www.music.uga.edu/~mwhead2/anime/) for a screenshot of this...

Which ep did they say her name Ukita's name was Markita??animenfo's submitted information has a tendency to have wrong kanji translations, especially when the information is submitted before airing of the show.
I agree with the theory that Ukita saw Lion-san like Asumi did... but instead of seeing the grown up Lion-san, she saw the young version of him? Because it seems Marika calls him Lion-san. Did you see what she wrote on that rocket? Marika and Lion-san. To Space.
Not Marika and Takano...
However, why did Lion-san not wear the mask when she first saw him? And yet wear a different version of it later?
See, this is why I like the show...
Edit: What I REALLY want is a Twin Spica manga scanslation. I mean now.
I think I know Marika's backstory. The riddle of Marika's age was so intriguing that I just had to do a little digging. Click only if you want to be thoroughly spoiled.
There are two Marika Ukita's. They share the same name, and look identical to each other. They are separated in age by a considerable number of years. The present-day Marika is actually a CLONE of the original Marika. Her father had her "created" after the original died at a young age. The terrible thing is that the current Marika knows that she is a clone. Even worse, she knows that her father thinks of her as a poor copy of the original! She has not had an easy time of it.

So is that why she has to take medication, because she is a clone or does she have some kind of illness. Also did the real Ukita die from illness? Or was it something else that caused her death. Sorry if I'm asking all these questions but I'm really interested in knowing. I love this show, one of the most underrated 04 animes ever. :)
Heh, I have to read that spoiler... I'm weak...
Twin Spica takes place in near future where it is possible that cloning is possible (hell, we can almost do it already), and Marika's family seemed rich so they could afford expensive operation, and also I think that the reason why Marika was kept inside is that cloning is illegal or not accepted by general public, so her family had to hide her.
This was just my speculation...

Sorry, I've written just about all I know on the subject already. I haven't read the manga, although it is now on my definite to-get list. I had earlier downloaded raws for episodes 12 to 20, and was holding on to them until the fansubs caught up, and then I was going to watch them in order. But the conundrum of Marika's age drove me crazy, so I selectively viewed some of the later episodes. I still plan on watching the bulk of them in order now, so I don't plan to dig any deeper. Yes, the original Marika was chronically sick. I have to assume that sickness as the cause of her eventual death. Marika's cloning was pretty much confirmed near the end of episode 18. But it was done in an indirect way, with little Marika overhearing her father's conversations and piecing things together herself. No elaboration of details. So I went on to episode 19, but there's something wrong with the raw file I had downloaded for that episode. I could not play back its sound. No sound. No subtitles. No confirmation.

Too bad the group that fansubbed one of my favorite shows seems to have expired :(
Still, I guess R2 DVDs are soon to be made available at some crazy japanese-market prices ($71 for a single DVD that seems to only contain a weird scattering of only a some of the episodes in no logical progression) starting this month:
Twin Spica ?Complete? DVD??? (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=KIBA-1033)
Then I'll get my japanese-enabled friend to whisper into my ear what's going on if no further ever fansubbing occurs after epsode 10 :)
I guess since there's no fan-service/ultra-violence this show won't likely get picked up by an American distributor.

Heh in the op they changed "I'll make it happen" which is how it's sung to "I will make it happen" which looks stupid.
HAHAHAHA :p
I thought it looked stupd too, BUT... the official lyrics is "I will" as opposed to "I'll"... and some people felt that it was wrong to change it in such a manner. Oh well, can't please everyone I suppose.

Woo! Woo! Woo!
Go anime-fansubs, you rock! More! More! More!
Thank you, thank you Anime-Fansubs!
Just watched episode 10 and thing are progressing as they tested their spacesuits and continued their training. Asumi's determination was showed clearly and also little details about Marikas past were revealed.
Someone who is afraid of water to go swimming alone requires a lot of willpower. Shuu's (that eyebrow-less guy) grandfather and Marika's father know each other, in previous episodes it seemed that Shuu is also from rich family, so that would make sence if they have something in common.
I really enjoyed this episode, like when Fuchuuya told Marika not to bully Asumi so much, and when that teacher told Sano "She has the eyes that you've lost."
Is it just me or is there something going on between Asumi and Kei. :heh:
Space debris mentioned in this episode can be dangerous, NASA has to change shuttle windows rather often as they are being hit by debris.
Oh, and Asumi looks cute in waitress uniform. ;)
New episode?
WAI!
Thank you thank you!!!

I could not wait, and had to find out the mystery behind Marika's age. I posted the explanation as a spoiler earlier in this thread... BUT in hindsight, I think it would have been better for me to have waited and to have tried to figure it out on my own. The puzzle is interesting, but the clues are clearly present in the show itself, and the answer is just about the only logical explanation there is. The makers of the show chose to drag out the mystery for several episodes. So it would have been better to watch the progression as the creators had intended, I think. Sorry if this post sounds a little too coy. I can't help myself. It's a really intriguing mystery, and Marika's a truly great character in the end, I think.
I LOVE this show!

Considering how expensive R2s typically go for, that's a pretty good price for a 20 episode series.

"We love you Anime-Fansubs, oh yes we do-oo"
Woohoo, Episode 11! Slowly but surely - which is immensely better than never, or quick and nasty. Hoorah for Anime-Fansubs!
Just seen ep 11 and I would gladly kick Sano Sensei ass any damn time, that punk bullying poor little Asumi is not good. He should know better hes a adult and a teacher on top of that. Other then that when Aumi's friend goes crazy when Asumi says it has nothing to do with her seemed awkward to me , I don't know maybe its just the voice seiyuu. Anyways it was good episode. Thank you AF and keep up the good work I don't care how long it takes to sub it just as long you guys keep doing it. :)

I agree with you Keitaro, on both points. But I loved the second half of this episode - so sad. Poor Lion-san :(
At least it sounds like Asumi will have some more encouragement in Tokyo from now on.
BTW, Zarxrax...what is that girl doing to the tree in your avatar?

Um... She's humping it :|
Episode 12 is out, woohoo! I can't wait to see what happens when Lion-San gets to the school.

You may be waiting a bit longer :p
This is another "Young Asumi" episode.
LOL yeah I realized that when I started watching it, I had forgotten what the previews from the previous episode were, BUT the next episode isn't, HA HA!
Anyway, as always this one was great, I did get a bit more of a filler feel from it as opposed to the other flashbacks even when they didn't actually effect the storyline. Still all in all it was really good
I thought it was really cute when Asumi is talking to her friend and Lion-san is in the background playing on the jungle gym dome thingy
There is clearly two storylines, one about six year old Asumi and other about teenage Asumi.
But anyway, ep. 12 was good, and very sad... While SaiKano was sad and depressing, Twin Spica has some optimism, but maybe because of it its very emotional and characters are much likeable. I was in tears during this episode.
But still I wonder what was the point of this episode if we don't see Kasane later. Maybe just to point out that there were many who suffered in that accident, and to give a reason to why Asumi's father left space agency.
Children can be cruel, like when those boys were trying to see Kasanes wound and her mother wasn't much better, but atleast Kasane survived to early adulthood.
No wonder that Asumi's father didn't continue his work, being part of the accident and then seeing personally the effects, especially to the childrens.

Spoiler for later eps...
I'm told Kasane does show up again late in the series, and in the present.
I really Hate these "young asumi" episodes because I find them distracting. That being said - episode 12 was quite good, possibly my favorite episode so far.

For me it is exactly the other way around. I generally like young Asumi episodes but episode 12 was the first one with a bit of a filler feeling.
Perhaps it is because Kasane has no connection to the other characters yet.
But this episode was still good *snif* . So far this show has no really bad episode.
Also I had to laugh about Lionsan. A spirit/ghost that is out of breath.
I was in tears during this episode.
Boy you're not the only one. Twin Spica is the only anime which consistantly drove me to tears. It's quickly becoming one of my favorite anime series.
I read some online review of the manga by some Japanese fans; appearantly the manga is much more of a tear-jerker and tells more background stories. I think I'll have to buy them and check it out. Anyone saw any scanlations of Futari No Spica out there?

Personally this is becoming one of my favorite anime... Im acully pretty exited this summer because i will be visiting a space station. I love this anime so much, so i try to share the love with other people... and so far everyone i should it to hates it.. even my High School anime club.. wtf is up with that?
Just found out that there's only 20 episodes of Twin Spica. So we'd only have 8 more left. It's strange to have only 20 shows when the norm is either 13 or 26.... maybe it was canceled? It is in the 9AM Saturday timeslot... which is a prime children's anime spot. Maybe the ratings weren't so good? Zannen datta ne...

You probably won't find any under that name, since it's Futatsu no Spica that you're looking for, probably. ^^;

The series was conceptionalized at 20 episodes from the beginning. It wasn't cancelled - that was all they ever intended to make.
Yeah, it was conceptualized at 20 eps.
But there really aren't any scanslations of Twin Spica (whatever the hell the name is... yes, Futatsu no Spica, okay) out there are there? Or is it licensed.. . I sure as hell wouldn't mind reading it. REALLY.
Nope, no one's scanlating the manga. It doesn't happen too often when a group picks up the manga of a fansubbed anime.

anoo... yeah, that' was a typo. Gomen neh.
There are no scanlations but I did find a whole bunch of good reviews all over the web from Japanese readers about the manga. I think I'll go ahead and just buy it, since I love the anime so much. Thank goodness Kinokuniya has them.... Don't really want to pay shipping from amazon.co.jp.
Just read some Japanese reviews on the final episode...
Seemed that the series will end without a resolution. Some fans commented that it looks like there's going to be a second season, but there has been no official word. Gosh I sure hope so! I think I'll check my old copies of NewType and see what's the rating on the show...
I just watched 2 episodes of the series and i must say this series ROCK! It's very sad, especially at the ending of episode 1. I already broke out in tears. Episode 2 was kind of happy....and also....sad...
One thing i don't get was, at the end of episode 1, Lion san disappeared right? I thought he disappeared forever or something. But at the beginning of episode 2, he seemed to be with the girl ever since she was young. So he didn't disappeared? ---- He stayed? (I hope my question wasn't confusing, i really want to know. :uhoh: )
No, he didn't disappear. I quess that was just that teacher's point of view, she only saw him for short moment.
And if you think that episodes 1 and 2 were sad, wait until episodes 5 and 6.

I've seen up to ep 20 and stumbled upon volumes 1-5 of the manga (apparently 6 are out for now, i don't know whether 6 is the final one or not though).
The anime is pretty faithful to the manga, so i guess until more of the manga is written, there won't be much hopes for a second series.
As for the ending :
Mild spoiler
I enjoyed the open ending, as it fit with the rest of the series. This was a series about making your dreams come true/working hard for them/friends (this is quite clichéd, but the execution is done well enough for it to be entertaining) , not about some people saving the earth from an alien invasion.
I wouldn't mind seeing more twin spica produced though *^_^*

While the translation of Twin Spica has generally been very good, the translator (and the viewers as well) really needs to either watch the anime of "Night on the Galactic Railroad" or read the excellent book translation "Night on the Milky Way Railway." If he had, he might have gotten the reference in the title of episode 9 ("Campanella's Forest"). Oh, and we got two direct references to it in episode 6 (The book Marika is reading from is "Night on the Galactic Railroad," and the music Lion-san plays on his harmonica is The New World Symphony, which also features prominently in Miyazawa's story).

I like the anime. It is a change of pace from the mainstream.
