I wonder how can you guys enjoy the anime if you read the manga and know what is going to happen... That's why I Think that reading manga sucks.
I think that it is better to discuss the manga rather than the anime because with the manga you don't know what's coming next.

You have to remember it is a NEN bomb, and not a regular one, as the black guy said, it was EXTREMELY strong Nen, so it POSSIBLY COULD have been blue flames to show how powerful it was.
Most of the stuff they are cutting is NOT NESSISARY to the overall plot either (like the girl Killua meets when he leaves, that really had no major impact on the plot other than her name that you hear later on ;p). The author when OVERBOARD with volience and gore in the manga, and I felt they handled stuff like the bombing well. People's eyeballs flying everywhere is not REALLY nessisary...I think they are just cutting stuff to spare time, why waste 30 seconds on ppl dying when you can SHOW it has happened in 10 seconds, then have 20 more for major plot...

The flames I was talking about are in episode 4, when that fat guy makes a circle of flames by pouring alcohol on the floor and lighting it.
I agree some of the stuff they left out wouldn't have come across very well in anime-form. (all the info about the game and all the different cards for example)
Some of it however did matter. (in my opinion)
Like the scene where the players negotiate with the bombers that was cut completely, or the simplified encounter between Tzeseruga and the Bombers. Those cuts hurt the characterization of some of the characters since you don't know as much about them later when 'major plot' takes place.
And I don't think the mangaka went overboard with the violence and gore. Sure it's there, but I've seen a lot worse and removing it takes away from the mangaka's original vision of the story.
Anyway, If they didn't have enough time they should just make more episodes, not rush though and skip stuff.

I can enjoy the anime fine even if I have read the manga because anime is a different medium than manga. The anime has voice acting, music, animation, color and so on. (The manga has some advantages too, though.)
It's like seeing a movie adaptation of a book you've read. I knew what would happen in the Lord of the Rings movies and I still liked those.
I would advise that if you like an anime you should check out the manga as well.
(Since quite often there are changes and the anime often doesn't cover all of the manga.)
I agree that not knowing what's going to happen does leave more room for forum speculation....OK, so what do you think will happen in the next HxH manga chapter? (use spoilers where necessary.)

Well, I think:
Netero is probably dead meat. The old mentor character always dies in shounen manga. Gon and Killua will probably have to fight Kaito. You see Kaito sitting in the background with the three royal guards in chapter 206 so I'm guessing he's evil/ being controlled now. I'm also guessing some of the weaker bug leaders will fight with the good guys against the King.

I read over the manga and I felt they did stuff quite well. You are just acting immature asking them to include stupid little stuff, I personally would have skipped over the same stuff to if I were in charge of the production of the series.

Obviously I don't think the 'stupid little stuff' is stupid and the manga author probably doesn't either or he wouldn't have bothered to put in the manga.
Overall I like the anime a lot, just pointing out some (IMO) small flaws.

No. I also fail to see the point in doing that, as by that time almost certainly at least 3 other groups will be pretty much done with the series.
Episode 4 was just released by A-faith. I've seen their episode 3 and i have to say their doing a good job.

HxH G I final 3 and 4 by Anime-Faith uses DVD as source as stated in this torrent submission. If we wouldn't have been sure about the source we wouldn't have labeled them at all.

I don't see how you can be lost as long as you have read this whole arc. Everything makes sense. They said that they would't use nen for a month if they lost the match and Killua might have to leave Gon because of what Biske told him. As for them losing I didn't really see that coming but thought it was a great twist. This arc has been getting a lot better lately.

HxH manga spoilers:
Gon cried because he lost. Gon now has Knuckle's transformed Nen-animal on his shoulder and can't use Nen for 30 days. Knuckle and Shoot went into NGL.
Killua will protect Gon for those 30 days and then plans to leave. Biscuit said Killua had to leave Gon if he lost, because of Killua's character flaw. (running away against strong opponents.)
And the King couldn't kill the catgirl, that doesn't mean he's not stronger than her, though.

click on DVD Release Schedule, since i think lunar and aone are focussing on dvd now. then look at DVD 2.
the release date should be 17/3/04 if i remember correctly. so maybe a week after that, then lunar or aone should've subbed it by then.
i know of a few sites where they release manga scans, but i dont know if its against the rules or some sort of that crap to paste the link here.

Going back to Togashi and DB, he was not really influenced by it at all. The Makai arc was supposed to be the main 4 going through the levels of Makai together. Hiei's and Kurama's pasts were supposed to be more in-depth as they passed familiar places, and it was supposed to end with a huge war right after Yusuke met Raizen. What he is doing with HxH, he wanted to do with YYH in the final arc (thinking battles and such), but he was pressured to make it more like DB. Not wanting to change his original idea too much, he ended the story rather abruptly.
Also, if I remember correctly, Hiei and Vegeta appeared around the same time in their respective manga.

Dragonball did influence Yu Yu hakusho, that doesn't mean they are exactly alike or anything. Just that some elements of YYH were inspired by Dragonball. Let's just leave it at that.

What happened? It's even worse than first GI eps.
It's so sad that HxH animation degenerated to such extent.
1-62 TV eps will forever stay as one of the best tv animated series i've seen. And i've seen a lot :)
Poor Hisoka - in current OAV he really looks like clown cause of terrible drawing :)
And storyline... It's going downhill petty fast. Plus i heard that next arc is about some stupid ants... That's sad. Really sad. (sighs and goes away) :)

As for the storyline, I think the GI storyline is really good and while the next arc isn't the best I think it has many strong points. As of late it has gotten interesting and in the last chap that came out made me question a lot of things that are gonna happen.

I dunno, is it really so hard for you to compare the level of animation? Let's take extreme case ;) - when you watch Spirited Away - do u see the difference in animation between it and, say, i dunno, actually, any anime tv series in existence? :))
I hope u do see the difference in level. When u watch Kenshin OAV (first one) - do you see the difference in level between first OAV and tv series?
Current HxH animation is simply crap - may be u should rewatch some HxH TV eps to appreciate how good it was back then. Say, Hisoka's fight with Gon or any other scene/ep. U can feel quality in every little detail. When, for example, Killua's brother hypnotizes Killua in the final stage of hunter exam - look at Killua's face, it's animated at almost movie's level. Again, every fight in HxH tv eps is astounding considering the animation level of majority anime tv series. I'm really surprised that they could pull of 62 eps with such high level of animation.

I have watched all of Hunter x Hunter 3 times over so it's safe to say I know what it looks like. My favorite animation of HxH was during the end of the TV show and into the first OVA. I admit that it looked better than but I would never complain about that. I guess I just happen to not care about animation quality that much. The reason I like HxH isn't for its animation, but for its characters and storyline. That's pretty much how I look at all anime.

Well, of course plot and characters are very important, thats why HxH tv eps are one of my favourites among anime :)
Besides, truly good series simply must have nice animation. That's my opinion anyway. Altho i can list a lot of examples :)

Seriously, I don't think animation is everything, but I WAS disappointed with GI Final so far. The OP/ED animations are very boring, and the ep animations have been very limited so far. The real test will come with the action sequences later in the series, I suppose.
They obviously did it with a lower budget than before, which makes me wonder what's up. Is HxH losing popularity in Japan? Didn't they get enough money for a within-a-series OVA (as opposed to just a long running TV series or a stand alone OVA)? Are they 'saving' on their HxH budget?
BTW, I didn't notice Hisoka looking any different though. He did _sound_ different, however, which I was slightly disappointed at. I think there was talk about that earlier in this thread, though (or I just heard it somewhere else :/ ).
I don't have a problem with the animation quality, but I do feel like they are rushing things a bit. Natural, considering that there are ONLY 14 episodes to do. Compared to the manga, there are just alot of things skipped here and there. But if you are a manga reader, this is actually a good thing as you'd already know whats going on and more or less just care about the more interesting scenes, aka the fights/events.

it's true the current arc is about ants. I too felt like the story took a downhill when it first started, but I now think otherwise. Actually now the plot development has gotten VERY interesting, and i think the ants are just a way to bring all the baddies together to the good side. (spyder vs ants anyone?) but the latest chapter has made things very unpredictable and interesting
Hisoka's Voice Actor is the same, his voice a little squeaky, probably from not using Hisoka's voice for awhile and doing another job on Prince of Tennis for Kikumaru, which is an incredibly squeaky character.
And I think the animation is fine, I'm just happy we get more HxH they could have ended the TV show and that's it! Like Flame of Recca or all those other shows that just stopped, I'm happy we at least get this.

Yeah, the HxH manga is a pain, luckily the story tends to be awesome, so it doesn't matter that much. The actual volumes have better art, can't wait till those come out for the more recent chapters...

Actually yes I can watch anime from the 70's with a strait face. I don't think that is so weird. I have seen the couple of eps of Galaxy Express 999 that Live-Evil is doing and I think that they are great. I am also part of a fansub team that has just come together to sub Ashita no Joe from 1970 which I hope that people will appreciate and enjoy.
the Animation for Episodes 1,2 and 4 were ok. i find the animation quality on ep 1 and 4 the best out of this OVA. episode 3 was pathetic. Bisuke all of a sudden had a stretched neck and broad body. killua's pants are up to his belly button so it makes his casual look , look retarded.
the seiyyuu for Hisoka and Phinx seemed to of had changed. someone said earlier that it was the same seiyuu for hisoka.
in episode 4, killua sounds alot more liek a girl. his seiyuu is actually a female, kurapica and gon aswell if you guys havent noticed.

This is a crappy OVA afterall. so i judged the episodes overall of the 4 episodes. and putting aside the TV series, first and second OVA
the Animation for Episodes 1,2 and 4 were ok. i find the animation quality on ep 1 and 4 the best out of this OVA. episode 3 was pathetic. Bisuke all of a sudden had a stretched neck and broad body. killua's pants are up to his belly button so it makes his casual look , look retarded.
the seiyyuu for Hisoka and Phinx seemed to of had changed. someone said earlier that it was the same seiyuu for hisoka.
in episode 4, killua sounds alot more liek a girl. his seiyuu is actually a female, kurapica and gon aswell if you guys havent noticed.

They produce OVAs to bring them to people only on VHS and DVD without airing on TV, so that means that getting a rip of an OVA is like getting a ripped Version of Matrix or something similar, isnt it?

building off that, the difference between downloading fansubs - even fansubs of ova's - and downloading something like a dvd rip of a movie in your native language is that the original productions aren't in a language you can understand, and may never be.
the idea is that there's going to be an indeterminate amount of time (maybe 3 months, maybe 5 years, maybe never at all) between something coming out in japan and something being available in your language through legitimate sources. You know there's going to be a japanese language version of the matrix, and you know for sure there's going to be an english version, but you don't know if there's going to be an english version of hunter x hunter or whatever else, at least until it's announced as licensed.
basically fansubs, while infringing on intellectual property, are tolerated because they aren't seen as having any significant impact on the markets that the owners of that intellectual property are interested in selling to. And in the case of OVA's, well ... someone's buying the dvds and ripping them for the fansubbers to use ... so the companies making this stuff are still getting something -- albeit smaller than they'd get if everyone spoke japanese and therefore felt motivated to import everything instead of watching fansubs.

Anime-Faith's version isn't really any better than Lunar's DVD version. (They are a little faster though.)

In the beginning i was following along the lunar releases, but around ep 4 they slowed down....way down, for some unknown reason, then a-faith(continuing off where they left off from the 1st GI ova) just releases 4 eps in a row in spectacular fashion...and now 5. Heck, they may even get 6 out before the other groups hit 5....the truth is, i hate to say which group is better than others at something but a-faith really is the best at hxh(like kaizoku at OP)...because that's all they do..now we'll see if they can get ep6 out before the other groups do 5 ^^

The reason Lunar was 'slow' is because the release schedule for this OVA in Japan is very slow.
Saying A-faith is fast and then comparing them to Kaizoku is kinda weird too, considering KF is about 100 eps behind in OP. :heh:
Plus, HxH is not all A-Faith does, last time I checked.

Well, the first 5 episodes were very rushed IMO. This OVA will probably focus mostly on the upcoming 2 big fights and handle those in more detail, so they'll probably won't show the ant story arc in this OVA, or if they do only the very beginning of that arc.
i doubt they will show the ant arc on anime
i think the ant arc has to much violence to be shown as anime. Eating human, picking in some one brains to get information but i do hope they will bring it out on anime :)

Too much violence? Are you kidding?. The Ryodan arc had alot of violence so i doin't see why they wouldn't animate the Chimera Ant arc.
Besides, its all being released directly to video and DVD so they don't have to worry about editing anything to fit TV.

It's not more violent than, say, the Berserk anime. And that was made for TV. This would be an OVA. There are OVAs out there 10 times more violent/gory than the ant arc.
japan seems to have no problem with broadcasting gory bloody shows. just because in other countries they have happy teletubies and happy anime like sailormoon doesnt mean they're gonna cut off the ant arc.
is the anime rated T, M? it is an OVA and you do have to buy it and it's most likely rated M. they dont show it on TV probably because of the violence so why the hell would they cut off the ant arc? doh. they need to make money. they'll include every ARC available. they have dubbed series of HXH here in HK. no cut scenes; but its on at around 2 am when all the little boys and girls are sleeping. so they wont cut off the arc just beacuse it's abit violent. when hxh airs it does tell you the P-G warning crap, they wont worry about the viewers of what they think of the violence

Episode 2 and episode...4 (I think) skipped a bunch of stuff from the manga. I'm guessing they chose to spend the most time on the dodgeball match and the fight with the bombers because those'll translate to anime better than the stuff with the cards.

Yeah, that part with Hisoka was in the manga and I think it is extreamely funny. Hisoka is my 2nd fav character in the show and I think any part with him makes the show better.

well, considering how much they've already censored other stuff, even if its an OVA, they're either goin to cut out ALOT of the stuff, or not animate it. the thing about the ant arc is not that its violent, but the type of violence jus goes different places. its more disgusting than violent really.

There is no proof that this is the last OVA. If you are refering to it being called GI Final all that means is that the GI storyline is going to be finished with this OVA. The manga is still going so there is always hope for another OVA.

hi all. i have a problem with viewing episodes 4 and 5 of the dvd version. there is sound but there is no picture... i hear alot about problems with codec so i think this may be the case. i have downloaded a newer version of divx but that still hasn't fixed the prob.... can anyone tell me wot i should do? thx
Well, I think your problem may stem from the fact the videos are encoded in XVID, not DivX. Just go download the newest XVID (and if you don't have it, ffdshow) codecs and you should be fine.

I don't know about the other groups, but Anime-Faith subs just the DVD version, since the video quality is way better. The DVD will be out May 19th, and our release shouldn't be too long after.
I agree, you should be going by the DVD release dates, not the VHS release dates. After seeing the quality differences between a VHS and a DVD release of HxH GI Final, I would have to say that most groups are probably doing DVD or nothing now as the quality difference is like night and day.
And how is the speed at which something is subbed going to affect it's competition value? Last time I checked, if someone likes something, they will get it whether it's a day after the show comes out in japan, or a few weeks.

Irumi....this has been said multiple times. The episodes DO NOT air on television. I repeat, DO NOT. They come out directly onto VHS and then a few weeks later they are released on DVD. The release dates for the VHS and the DVD version have been posted multiple times. You can find them if you look. You should go by that to predict when the fansubs will come out.

are you sure the VHS version still comes out earlier than the DVD version? i remember it being the same after DVD 2.

As far as I can recall, it's always been that the VHS tapes came out 1-2 weeks before the DVD copies.

That's correct. The idea is that DVD's are the prefered media now, so they need to give VHS a fighting chance by releasing it a week sooner. Of course if the rumors about the phasing out of VCR's at the end of this year is true, that'll quickly become a moot point.

I know what you mean, I just started watching the entire series from the beginning again, I'm back up to like episode 45, but I'm actually HOPING I'm not gonna make it in time LoL.
I'll probably watch them as soon as they get done and then pick back up wherever I leave off until I get through the whole thing again.

I think that in hunter x hunter there will be something after GI final i wish they do cause its so cool and its weird that the date of GI Final 7-8 passed and theres no sign of it weird.

ALthough I don't know how long it would take to rip, the shipping on a DVD to america depends on different conditions. The actual DVD will ship 1-4 days after release (ussually), EMS shipping should take 3-5 days whereas Air Mail (cheaper) can take up to 2 weeks depending on where you live.

Dunno. Depends on how many times we have to quality check and re-encode.

I just got my DVD in the mail Monday from Amazon Jpn. Man, episodes 7 and 8 are awesome. Not as much stuff is cut out as the other episodes. Plus, the animation is MUCH MUCH MUCH better now. It doesn't look so...plain. Plus, we get a new Opening.It is just great with it showing a teaser of the awaited final fight of the OVA. (and it doesn't look crappy like it did in the first opening). I think the second half is going to be incredible. Even though I know exactly whats going on, I'm happy to see it animated now.

The fearless ubo submiting to death proves that Kurapica is indeed strong.

Precisely. Lets say an electrical generator can put out 100MWH, we'll call this generator A. Generator B on the other hand can put out 500MWH. Generator A is capable of using 100% capacity whereas Generator B can only put out at 40% capacity.
Generator A: 100MWH * 100% = 100MWH
Generator B: 500MWH * 40% = 200MWH
Generator A may be able to use 100% of it's potential, but generator B, still outputs more power despite only being able to use 40% of it's potential.

wow, so incredibly anal about "VHS or DVD" omg... but nyway, i guess i can't complain about the fansubbing...I owe thanks and u guys owe me nothing, not to mention that i always felt stupid by feeling jipped when i didn't have one of my illegal actions work out perfectly... But still I sure wish I could get my hands on a RAW...dakara naoshita hunter x hunter wa, ore ni totsute, jitsu ni hitsuyonai mono da...
But nyway, guess there's no choice but to wait since that ain't happening, though I really can't fathom y it's really worth it to postpone the release like wut a month because of some arbitrary difference in quality...although to each his own...nyway, peace out....Can't wait to see 7and8, or maybe at this point i'll just wait for 9and10 and watch them all together...

Yeah I know we aren't supposed to complain about fansubbers taking for ever and all since it's a free service, but I really feel like this EXCELLENT series is getting screwed over. Any of the stuff on tv is subbed in like 3 days. I know one of these groups has to have gotten in there dvds like a fricken week ago...*le sigh* :mad:

Stuff on TV is pre-riped and generously de-interlaced by the japanese so that you can begin fansubbing immediatly upon obtainning the RAW. DVDs if you import them must be ripped by the fansubbing group. This can take a while depending on how easy or hard it is to get the rip done properly.
If there's a new intro/outro, you may notice that the "quality" fansub groups take an extra few days to release even TV copies of their fansubs.
This leads to the fact that 1-2 weeks is not unreasonable if you like to have a quality release. Especially if said fansub group has other projects to do at the same time.
I personally don't think the series is being "screwed over", people who want it will get it regardless, and if it's people wanting to sample the series, there's 2 other OVAs and the whole TV series they should be watching first anyhow so they aren't lost.

Ubo was pretty suprised Kurapica can still stand up after being punched since hes a materalization user, which can only turn his reinforcement to 60%. If however kurapica is using 60%, he will have been dead in that punch.
There is a limit to nen, ubo has reached that potential. The spiders said, "like a gorilla crushing ants, thats what someone who trained his reinforcement to the maximun."
As for saying about the generator thing, lets say Hisoka, he is a transformation , he is able to turn his reinforcement to 80%. Kurapica and Hisoka punched each other with nen, Kurapica reinforcment value is 1000. However Hisoka needs to have 1250 value of nen in order to make an even match with Kurapica in the punch. If however Kurapica is fighting another nen user which is materalization, the other user needs to have 1666 value of reinforcment nen just to make it an even match.(if kurapica is maxed in reinforcement as he can be, hisoka will take 20% nen dmg no matter what and that will most proberly result in death or severe injury).
If Kurapica actually bothered to train, he is undefeatable in all 1 on 1 as he is able to turn all his stats to max, he has no weakness in nen at all. In order words, Kurapica has a very uniqe(as he is proberly the only one in this world) advantages over everyone. Kurapica only has 6 months?(or 9) nen training and he is able to withstand ubo's maximun punch, able to stand up and then heal his wounds in 2 secs(turning reinforcment to maximun) in front of ubo, whom is also reinforcment.
Ubo is fearless as he said he will be stronger then anyone, yet he gave in to death when he realized the distance between him and kurapica. For the most fearless spider member to set his heart to death and admit the opponent is too strong, Kurapica must be very strong. After all, ubo knows about nen and has trained madly at it. For a very powerful nen user(reinforcment max) to admit the opponent's nen is something he cannot go against proves that Kurapica is indeed too strong(see the too?).
Because there is a limit to nen as ubo proved it, you cant really keep training reinforcment and then beat kurapica at it, because both of you max out at the same value. This brings up another annoyance of mine. Why is everybody so obsessed with having supreme quality? I just wanna watch the freakin show and hope that I can delete it soon when it gets licensed. Man, I'm ranty today.

Seems highly likely to me that Kurapica is actually above 100% at that time and that is why he gets all fevery and junk later. Kurapica is definately not the most powerful nen user in the universe.
I get my Hunter X hunter DVDs in Australia, i'm guessing its a Asia release (not the Japan release)
I want to ask a question about the DVD on GI FINAL, in Japan the DVD has 2 eps each, but the one i got has 4 eps, I got the GI final X 2 it has eps 5-8 (its when they have the battle in the light house) and front package is from the japanese release 3, and the back package is from the japanese release 1,(i'm just guessing 1 because the images on the back are from the events that occur before the light house fight)
I just want to know what the package for GI FINAL 1 looks like (NOT the Japan release or any that has 2 eps, it must contain eps 1-4)
and another question i want to know about the fight in the Tunku tougijou, when Hisoka fights Kastoro, i want to know if thay showed the whole fight on TV in japan and if it was on the DVD, because i never got to see that.

i was talking about actualy dealing damage but i prob should have said that off the bat but yes i know what you are talking about he can use a few but 2 of the chains are for the spyders one to restrain them the other is the knife i think... anyway be koo to see some more hunter series pop up asap... laters

The new opening has amazing animation and great art, the show's quality has been stepped up a number of notches, with bright vibrant colors and excellent effects and some of the best lighting I have ever seen, and the ending theme is also very cool. The music is also very refreshing.
I hope they continue to match this level of quality with the episodes to come.
Also, Gon looks seriously cooler with his new "badass" determined look that he sports in the show and the opening now.

I had to wake up early this morning to watch the new ep before work, so all day I was thinking 'What are these guys talkin about it didn't look that great...' Appearently I was still half asleep when I watched it, because I just watched it again and it's stunning. Of course I didn't even have time this morning to watch the new opening, so that was a nice treat as well. NOW SOMEBODY HURRY UP WITH EP 8!!! :)

I'm new to the forum but not new to Hunter x Hunter, I have to say the same as all of you in that the quality or episodes and storyline are just fantastic.
I hope and pray that episode 8 will follow quickly as I thought the wait between OVA 6 and 7 was drastic but well worth it.

I agree watching several episodes of a show like this in a row is sometimes more fun, but I'm just going to watch a new episode whenever it's released. Then later when I have the whole thing I usually watch it again with a friend who hasn't seen it yet, watching 3-4 episodes back-to-back.

my only problem is that those dvds are pretty exprensive to import and there are no shops around here that import recently released dvds.

I feel the same way. Hunter X Hunter somehow manages to have more story behind it and the pacing is much better.
Though what I don't get is how Naruto has its own forum and Hunter X Hunter is confined to a few threads in the fansubs section. people are obviously sleeping

There will probably be more OVAs...the manga is still ongoing and the author has said he wanted to see all of HxH animated.

just saw episode 9 (A chinese fansubbed version...and no, I don't know chinese.) and it looked great, animation was at least at the same level as episode 7-8, it also covered a lot of the manga without skipping anything. (that I noticed.)
Even Dragonball GT has some good parts. I have to admit most of it is bad but you know once in a while it's good, especially when you have the VCD and you can just skip to wherever you want or something.
I just saw ep 7-8 (stupid final exams made me miss so much!) It was so good. I hope Killua's hand would heal... it looked rather painful. It did heal in the manga, right?

Saying you love ALL anime is just silly given how broad anime is both in genre and quality.
On-topic: I really liked seeing the Ryodan again in episode 9, Hisoka was awesome as well. Especially the part with Killua's sister

The other parts of this OVA sort of went too fast. It skipped things from the manga. The sports challenge part still covered 3 chapters or so per episode.
