(´・ω・`) Ya~
Haven't fully watched the episode yet, but scanning through, it seems that none of the rest of the members of the team get any introduction/time in this episode either. Except Largo and what's-her-name-the-red-hair.
Too bad for the ones that were hoping, huh...

Next episode has that camerawoman from the OP though, it seems.

I...Isara~~~~, kawaii yo... (;´Д`)ハァハァハァハァ

The only good part of this episode was Hans being cute. The rest was Alicia x Faldio set up. No point in whipping out the Big Evil Villain Squad for it at all.

ED... Why don't you even talk once?

Umm~, it was interesting, but the action isn't as exciting as I would hope. With the pig catching, the free talk between Alicia and that guy, the other kid behind them getting jealous, etc, the entire battle was... peaceful, haha.
At least Isara got more lines this time...
Welkin's side was actually decent though, with the cheat tank and other troops defeating the enemy seemingly without any casualties (as expected of anime!).

Mmm... Can't remember. When Alicia said that ever since she was little, her wounds healed quickly, I was reminded of something... It was something with "What, are you ____? :heh: "... Just can't remember what ____ was... Something from a different anime... Zombie? Superhuman?... Oh well, doesn't really matter.

Cute pig... Why does it have wings anyways? In the middle of the anime, will it turn into some powerful weapon and help defeat the enemy? Or is it just a mascot character?
Pig?! ...Gasp, swine fl-...! Run! ε=ε=ε=┌(;゚д゚)┘

Preview: Facial distortion :heh:
ED will talk?

After i've seen this preview for myself, i've officially lost all faith in this being an adaptation of the game. :heh:

I agree but I like her English voice in the game more actually. Her English voice suits her more in my opinion.

If this anime gets licensed, they better have the same voice actress for her.

Welkin telling Alicia to touch animal feces is pure win.

A: "What is this?"

W: "Shit."

*Insert Alicia face here*

Welkin so far proved to be a good commander, to the point where the enemy complimented his skills. Lets hope this streak continues.

Too bad we don't get to see the IS-3, though. :/

good episode. I didn't expect them to pull out the Alicia Rush so early in the anime.

Gotta love welkin making her hold poop :)

Unlike others I kinda like the Faldio-Alicia setup. He was one of my favorite non-playable characters in the game so its a nice bonus to see his character get fleshed out. When he put an acorn down her shirt i went lol

Today's episode was pretty good.

I'm glad to see they kept the "you made me hold poo?!" joke. That bit was funny.
Nice battle episode, though I think it cut to talking at somewhat awkward times.
Jaeger's a total badass. He took Winston Churchill's quote about being shot at and just worked with it.
Alicia getting shot in the leg went pretty well. I guess they didn't want to wait until Barious (sp?) to show that she's a quick healer.
Hans is just adorable!!!!!

Next episode looks promising for those who want to see more about the other Squad Seven members, with the introduction of Ellet!

Ellet craziness is around the corner! And she doesn't just talk with the main Seven's; she speaks to others (confirmed for Jann).
Alicia with tons of exasperated facial expressions! This should be a gold mine for sig makers.
WHAAAAAAA?!?! ELLET TRIES TO SEDUCE WELKIN?! HOLY CRAP!!!

- Enemy soldiers are getting killed left and right. Meanwhile Alicia's leg gets paper cut by a snipers bullet. I havent lol'ed this hard since watching lord of the rings trilogy.

- A comic relief pig with wings has no place in this anime. Period.

- I wish I had a ps3 so I could play this game.

MUAHAHAHAHAHA

For the poop scene alone, I hereby award this episode 10/10.

He didn't have any point in the game either, so it's hardly surprising Hans is pointless in the anime.

Hell yeah. And anything with a Faldio is an automatic 10/10 for me. He's more interesting than Welkin will ever be. Welkin should just be a farmer and develop fertilizers.:eyespin:

I'm pretty sure its just Ellet using some weird means to get information or something. That better be the case because I may drop this show if they do the unthinkable and actually try to build a love quadrangle between Alicia, Faldio, Welkin, and Ellet. While I seriously, seriously doubt that happening, who knows?:eyespin:

urgh.....:upset:

If there is to be a love quadrangle as much as l despise the ldea.... l don't think it would be with ellet but probably with the princess. That being said....if such a thing happens....then there's some very sweet memorable moments in the game that will change for the worst.....

as for ellet...

My impressions:
Yeah right, as if the enemy snipers were so inaccurate.
And no way my assault rifles could shoot from such a distance.
That shot of Alicia with flames behind her was pretty cool.
The scene where Welkin stopped Alicia from chasing Jaeger was a little strange. His tank seemed to appear out of nowhere. And how could he hear what Faldio was saying with those headphones on?

Ep 6 preview:
YES! MORE ALICIA FACES!

So finally they use some good tactics of a two front attack. A classic to overwhelm the enemy especially if they do not know of the second front. Alicia finally gets her battle wound.
What I liked:
-I liked the beginning when Alicia and Isara have spotted what they believe to be a enemy spy.
-Brigitte being pointed with the rifle of Alicia but she did not do it on purpose. Alicia just wanted to have Brigitte now talk too much because Alicia thought it was really a enemy.
-Turns out my favorite funny part that has absolutely nothing to do with the story comes.....that is when Alicia finds out that the enemy spy is not a spy but just a wandering animal know as Hane Butai (winged pig) :XD:
-I loved Welkins determination and planning. Truly he can become a good General just like his father.
-Ok the pig shit joke was LAME! I really do not find anything funny about it but what was funny is how Alicia reacted to it.
-The map drawing and depiction is nice! Well shown and simple.
-The simplified plan of how the troops would move was nice also.
-Hahaha, Gregor being a bad ass with his orders yet too cokcy as usual.
-When Alicia moves with Faldio's troops in the bushes and Faldio joking with Alicia around there. It was funny but I think the comedy was not right. If anything the HUMOR SCREWED UP! It should have been after the battle. Better yet I would have rather have them make the battles MORE EPIC!
-I did like Faldio questioning about Alicia's fear and readiness for battle. It was good that he tests her readiness.
-LARGO FIRING THE BAZOOKA! That was nice! LOVED IT! Especially when it penetrated the armor and then killed that piece of crap enemy tank! BEAUTIFUL!
-Another beauty is how well the sloped armor is against the pitiful shots of the enemy tanks.
-When Faldio puts a nut but lies to Alicia it is goat shit into Alicia's back and she freaks out.
-Hahah, the pig got taken into the tank of Welkin.
-Alicia starting her own initiative to rush towards the enemy base. That was unthinkable yet she impressed me with her courage. She dodged and hid well using the trees. HOWEVER, in war they say HASTE MAKES WASTE.
-Ramal (Faldio's assistant) covering with Faldio Alicia when she almost shot by a tower sniper, good thing sniper died.
-When Radi showed up as Gregor was losing this front. It was too satisfying to see how annoyed and angry was Gregor at that time. Serves him right.
-Seeing Edelweiss in action and properly animated was nice also. I WANT MORE OF TANK BLOWING UP THINGS!
-Alicia rushing yet again within the flames of the enemy base, RUSHING towards Radi before shooting at him nearly hitting his head. I ESPECIALLY LOVED the part where she TRULY SHINES in the mids of the fire. THE MUST BE SO FAR HER BEST POSE!
-Alicia naming the pig Hans. LOL
-Welking offering Alicia some food for the pig was also LOL.
What I did not like:
-FIRST OF ALL THE PIECE OF SHIT SOLDIER WHO SHOT ALICIA! I know, I know is part of war but I still do not like it! Now Alicia has a permanent SCAR THERE. I know I USED TO BE CAPTAIN IN MILITARY STRATEGY! All forces, air/land/sea. I did not engage in real combat as I never intended to join the UN nor was Canada in war anyways at that time.
-Another was the stupid enemy shooting at Brigitte nearly killing if she did hide in time. WELKIN HELLLLLOOOOOO you are to shoot all the tanks! Damn it RED CARD! :recard:
-As much as I would like the comedy it was good ONLY AND ONLY at the beginning and end of the episode. In the middle when all are fighting WAS JUST BAD! NOT RIGHT AT ALL! I would never joke with my subordinates during strategy meetings. I would before and after when all is cleared up. Even then I would not because it could ruing the readiness and mentality but after the battle HELL YEAH WITH SOME SAKE! :P
Little extra (MY WISHES)
-Would have been better if they used scorch earth on the base. Would have been nice to see how all would react when everything would start blowing up around them.
-No gas attack yet so that is too bad also.
-The enemy better start doing something that is equal to Edelweiss' power to make things more fair and interesting.
-Gregor dead would be nice but guess sometimes it will come.
-WHERE ARE THE AIRPLANES??? I would want some bombs dropping.
-Finally Where The Hell are the mines, and other booby traps and why are the soldiers so sloppy. A SNIPER MISSING....really, damn I would fire him from his position!

Great map and simple one! If they continue doing maps like this. I WILL BE PROUD OF THEM AS CAPTAIN OF MILITARY STRATEGY! I just love it WHEN PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO READ THIS, understand military strategy because it is simplified for you! Good stuff....two front attack!
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503041820.jpg

Best pose of Alicia! LOVE IT!
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503043318.jpg

Hahah that was funny! Alicia pointing by mistake the gun because she wanted to shut up Brigitte due to possible spy suspicion looming around.
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503044727.jpg

I can also say the same to Brigitte who was quite bold to jump at the enemy like that. BTW, if I were the enemy.....I would HAVE SHOT BRIGITTE right in the chest at least three bullets killing her. That was a stupid initiave.
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503044748.jpg

Awwwwwwwww, that was so cute! Welking petting the pig! Hahha! Turns out that is the enemy spy though to be.
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503044818.jpg

Awww, look the pig is taking a liking to Alicia. MOE!
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503044834.jpg

For some reason I decided to put this because it reminds of spy satellite shots. This one would one of them if a real satellite would ZOOM IN ON THEM.
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503044851.jpg

That is WTF but innovative way of showing things but I would not make WAR into something MOE! Unless it is to make fun, which I think they tried to do here. MY PROBLEM is WAR IS NOT TO BE MADE FUN!
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503044957.jpg

TANK COMMANDER WELKIN! He looks like those in WW2, especially with the headphones he has on his head.
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503045010.jpg

First shot is fired by Edelweiss and nicely done again.
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503045031.jpg

Gregor! NAZI FUCK! NAZI! NAZI! DEATH TO THEM! YES, I AM POLISH! YES, I AM WITH THE ALLIES AND IT MEANS ALICIA AND WELKIN!
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503045047.jpg

I did like this part a lot but find the joking not right at all.
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503045113.jpg

WOW! The sloped armor is amazing! Once again it saves Edelweiss from any damage! Good stuff!
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503045135.jpg

I HATED THIS PART! Sudden machine gunning from the enemy tank and Brigitte almost fell for it. Damn! O_O
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503045154.jpg

First shot of the bazooka by Largo! I LIKE THE DESIGN AS WELL THE EFFECTS OF IT.
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503045210.jpg

Beautiful, incredible and very happy smile on my face. The rocket of the bazooka penetrates the enemy tank and some seconds later....BOOM!
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503045225.jpg

Second shot of the bazooka my only problem on this one is they did not show it blow another tank. So we don't even know if it missed or killed another tank. TOO BAD!
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503045255.jpg

I took a liking to the design of the sniper rifle but my problem again in this is that it looks not of WW2 but more of WW or WW2 but Russian design.
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503045337.jpg

Gregor was so funny! Being a sore ANGRY LOSER! HAHAHHA! GO AND KILL YOURSELF FRIEND FOR YOUR FAILURE!
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503045356.jpg

HATE! HATE! HATE! THIS! Alicia now officially got her first wound as well as her first scar. How I am sure......well in reality it is like that. I saw countless wounds so I can confirm. The only luck is that it was not a direct hit on her leg. It might have been bad if it was like that. POOR ALICIA!
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503045422.jpg

I sure do like that grenade the person is holding. They date back from WW1 in design and were still used by other countries in WW2. Today some lower rank countries such as African rebels or those in Irak use them. Since they are quite cheap.
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503045436.jpg

You can say I was surprised to see Radi suddenly appearing in Gregor's face! Ha!
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503045446.jpg

Damn Alicia...YOU ALMOST KILLED HIM! Too bad! Damn! :frozen2:
http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt165/darksideaa/snapshot20090503045536.jpg

VICTORIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!! YEAH! We win!

:heh: Sorry to burst your bubble slayer545-sama, but if any faction in Valkyria should be compared with National Socialist Germany, it is actually Galia, who adheres to German military standards as opposed to the Empire, who adheres to Russian standards. Never mind that our protagonist has a German name...

That, and if you want to force an Allies comparison on anyone, the Allies is actually the Federation, a faction composed of Western European nations at war with the Empire. Gallia is not part of any alliance, they are standalone neutral. Although when you say you are with the Allies, I assume you meant Allies sans Russia, yes? :D

I have this really really strong feeling that he didn't study his history books right. He probably never heard of the Nazi-Russian pact to split Poland, or the Katyn Massacre :P

But epic episode. I'm surprised there are so many posts here even before subs were out.

I don't get why they had to retreat though, the anime gave me the impression that the empire had an entire battalion there, while there were only 2 Galian squads. A flanking squad of 7 or 8 militia shouldn't be able to take a whole base.

Skyfall
2009-05-03, 12:25
Well, to be fair, the anime has been doing this for the whole time - making a handful of militia overwhelm key imperial army positions, and seemingly with zero casualties on their side no less. Then again i watch this series for the fun characters and their interactions, because the action is not to be taken very seriously here :) (When they bother to show any that is, not jump between several abrupt shots of "action" without any feel of scope or the situation and call it a day). It is certainly a quite enjoyable and quirky series thus far, but less than commendable when it comes to displaying the actual warfare part.

I know all that your saying but I was more specifically referring to Gregor the way he is dressed. I know he uses Russian tactics mixed with perhaps other ones among them German but I still find his behavior more like a NAZI. Allies, yeah in this case we can assume Russians are with Germans because at first they were. No Galia does not have features of German NAZIS.

I have a 90% and higher ranking in History and AM AWARE of all of that. They had to retreat because the army could not get in time to support them. YOU DO NOT SIT LIKE A DUCK only to be shot when all you can have is some fake hope "Oh let's wait the back up will be here soon and then DEAD!" Retreat and find another time for revenge will be a key motivator to me about Gregor wanting pay back.

The Gallian people show some anti-Semitism towards the Darcsens.

Gregors Uniform is not equal to that of the Uniforms of the Wehrmacht or the SS Troops. The Uniform he wears remembers more of the Luetzower Freikorps (Black Uniform, Golden Ribbons, and a Red trim (german. Kragenspiegel): http://freenet-homepage.de/AndreasMeininger/Nr158.jpg

I think you are getting way ahead of yourself there trying to associate Gregor or the Empire with national socialism. The fact is, the Empire itself is composed of peoples of various nationalities and territories. That, and Maximillian's generals are not exactly what you would call a "pure stock".

Galia on the other hand, as I mentioned earlier, adheres to the German military standard that prevailed in the 2nd World War. While they may not be political nazis, the Galians certainly have no problems using their hardware.

On the other hand, while nazis sent Jews to camps, the Russians sent Jews to gulags and Siberia, they just get less spotlight because of 1. Russians won the war, and 2. they were worse organizers.

Ha, that is what I thought too. Of course, the color scheme is pattered after the three colors of Germany, but that is another story.

Well, given Galia's status as underdogs, they're actually more like Finland than the other major powers.

And let's not kid ourselves: the Poles did have their own pogroms against the Jews. While some are stirred up by the Nazi occupiers, there were plenty who organized these pogroms by themselves.

Well, given Galia's status as underdogs, they're actually more like Finland than the other major powers.

The Gallians certainly sport that aspect. No doubt about it. What they did was in similar veins of what the Finns accomplished in World War II. Although in their case, they did not need to fend off two enemies.

No words can describe Finland's political cunning during World War II. Certainly they found Germany a useful ally during the early stages of the war, but as the war worsened, the Finns managed to keep both Germans and Russians at bay, while survived several military encounters against both of them.

I give them major political props for that maneuver alone. Nobody has yet to pull something like that off.

- Tak
I do not associate this politically. By Nazis once again I mean attitude, uniform wise like mentioned before. Uniform is not Nazi but it is similar to German military standards and some of them were Nazis not only because of their association but also their attitude that some had even if they were not part of those divisions. This being said that is how I think.

Great courage is also recognized but Poland also gave a good resistance (better than France at least!).

However, it should be noted that while the Finns did inflict heavy losses on the Soviets, in the aftermath of the Winter and Continuation War, they had to concede a significant amount of territory, although they retained their independence.

Let's see how Galia handles this threat.

Ok, just for you again Black =/= German Standard Uniform. The army standard uniform are grey. Even to the time of the WWII. The SS Troops used Black and silver/white. sometimes with a red brassard.

Currently I am looking for a cruel officer equal to Gregor, so I skip this part until I found the best fit comparison for him.

What officer wouldn't be pissed off if he was getting his butt kicked by milita? He kicked the regular military's butt with such ease the militia shouldn't even be worth a fight.

He's nowhere near a nazi german at all. He's a high ranking arisotcrat so obviously he's going to display some sort of arrogance and high end attitude which Jaeger pointed out (social status) but that's another thing.

And if your going about him sacrificing his troops for the greater good there are tons of generals who've done that in the past. One good example would be the Union General Hancock who sacrificed an entire REGIMENT to the confederates during Gettysburg.

On that note, it is rather sad that the Imperials kick the Gallian's regulars so easy but when it comes to fighting the milita they can't do squat and :heh:

No kidding, its not like he was preaching anti-Darc ideologies to his troops nor was he presenting some sort of political statement. He was simply being determined and decisive when his troops failed to do what he believed they could accomplish.

How is that a Nazi is beyond anyone's guess. You don't need to use a podium with a red background to be a nazi. On the other hand, I can easily accuse him of being a Stalin. Hell, in a battle of ego between Hitler and Stalin, Stalin won, and I am not just talking about winning the war.

Exactly IT! Stalin and if Stalin had no same values or similar ones he would not A)Ally himself with Hitler. B) Be depressed for sometime while Hitler attacked his country. :heh: There is far more than what one sees. My problem is that sometimes I express myself in a very confused manner. Well some good points first (without getting too deep into spoilers):
- action! Although it's still on the rather shallow side, it was quite an improvement over the bridgehead. Not to mention Largo doing what he should.
- Welkin showing his smarts
- Alicia showing her brawns err.. gung-ho rushiness
- interesting interaction between the imperial generals. They're not shown as complete fools either, which is a good change from usual "villain" leaders.
- droppings! now we're only missing the bug comparison.
- we get to see some more squadies from the game in Squad 1! (darn.. Nadine is nowhere to be seen though...)
- Did anyone else notice the battle music from the game playing during the action?

The negative:
- silent background characters. Guess we'll have to wait for the next episode again.
- background characters acting like... background characters. But then I guess having the spotlight on the main characters makes sense from an anime point of vue. take that sniper out with a sniper, geez! Now if only squad 1 would have inherited a sniper character

I get the feeling that the anime is more based on the manga than the game. Though in any regard, it only has a loose basis on either.
I feel like the manga is much closer to the game than the anime. Not to mention the squadies get to be fleshed out as soon as chapter 4. In the anime we're still waiting...

There was a longer fight, but the episode still was boring. I find that the only interesting parts of this episode were: Radi's thought that Alicia can be a Valkyria and Faldio's thought that she is interesting.

It doesn't make much sense really. In the game they already know where the enemy base is, so there's no mention of an animal trail.

Thinking about it more, and there could be a few dozen animal trails in those woods. They could lead anywhere.

What triangle?
It's so clear that it will be Alicia and Welkin that Faldio is far away from being a concurrent. There isn't any tension. If the director want to create a good drama or a triangle he shouldn't make it obvious that Alicia and Welkin is the winner and make Faldio a real threat. Where are you seeing a triangle? I see that Faldio is teaching Alicia how to be a Welkin's wife.

sadly it seems alicia has a deeper awkward kind of bond with faldio then with welkin at this point of the story compared to the game. maybe ellet will finally stir some jealousy in alicias heart regarding welkin....but that would seem out of place unlike the game. which worries me because l wonder how out of place/awkward or completely remove will the scene when 2 certain members of squad 7 get separated from the squad . the chemistry is completely lacking which is a damn shame!

We're not sure how it will exactly play out in the end (actually, those who played the game do...) but the main reason why this even gets a discussion or two is because it was mentioned in an interview. Naturally, that's bound to raise some eyebrows whether or not you've played the game.

Hmmm, it seems to me that these last couple of episodes (and the preview of the next) are there to set up a love triangle. Faldio clearly gets under Alicia's skin due to his provocations and Welkin also gets under her skin for being so aloof. The fact that both men are able to bother her emotionally possibly foreshadows her feelings for both men. From what we have seen, I think she is attracted to both.

However, she probably feels stronger toward Welkin right now, but I'm excited to see Faldio tear down the wall she has in between them.

And, LOL, winged pig! So cute!

Well, all I can say is that the episode was meh. I thought all the stuff between Alicia and Faldio was really, really dumb. I'm ok with there being a love triangle/polygon but the way they are doing AliciaxFaldio just feels really bad.

Also, for any interested, here are the names of the various squad members shown in squads 1 and 7 for this episode (they might change later on). Please correct me if I've made any mistakes :p:

Squad 1:
Faldio Landzaat - Scout (based on weapon being used)
Ramal (pet boy) - Shocktrooper (based on weapon being used)
Herbert Nielsen - Engineer
Wendy Cheslock - Shocktrooper
Rosina Selden - Lancer
Nils Daerden - Lancer
Musaad Mayfield - Scout
Mica Hawkins - Shocktrooper
Knute Jung - Engineer
Salinas Milton - Shocktrooper (not absolutely sure about this one)
Hannes Salinger - Shocktrooper

Squad 1:
Welkin Gunther - Tank Commander/Scout
Largo Potter - Lancer
Bridgette "Rosie" Stark - Shocktrooper
Oscar Bielert - Sniper
Emile Bielert - Sniper
Alicia Melchiot - Scout
Isara Gunther - Tank driver
Jann Walker - Lancer
Susie Evans - Scout
Marina Wulfstan - Sniper
Edy Nelson - Shocktrooper
Homer Peron - Engineer
Karl Landzaat - Engineer

They also show Aisha Neuman (Shocktrooper) in the next episode preview with the other 7's.

Interesting to note that Squad 1 is heavily biased towards shocktroopers and Squad 7 had 3 snipers at it's disposal (thought they didn't show anyone using a sniper rifle). One would think they would have sent one of the snipers with the ambush group, would have saved Alicia from getting shot at.

Excellent list, thanks. They are in the order of appearance at 06:40 in the episode for those who want to put a face on the names.

It's actually quite hard to tell their classes since they are all wearing scout armour and no equipment instead of the class-specific gear from the game.

Only mistake I found is that the one you listed as Nina Streiss is actually Rosina Selden, a Lancer.

Aisha is in the OP and ED. She hasn't appeared in any episode so far though. Does make me wonder if they'll make her just appear out of thin air or actually take this occasion to introduce the squadies.

As for this episode...Meh...Terrible pacing of the battle, but atleast it wasn't incredibly short like last time. Couldof done without the blatant reuse of Largo's firing animation no matter how good it was though it atleast fired like a rocket unlike the other weapons...Honestly bolt actions and semi-automatics are not supposed to fire like machine guns. :heh:

Sadly I think that Welkin has still some time. Remember he is aloof thus one of those people who will say one time "Ehhhhh, you like me?" What I mean is he will realize later on due to his slowness.

I cannot remember shock trooper term. Anyone can tell me according to this game what is it. The terms varies from country to country in military definitions is all I know and I am too busy to research this.

Ok, so, my hope for this series was that it would expand on the perspectives of the conflict between Gallia and the Empire more than the game could. What I am seeing in the last two episodes are the makings of a character driven plot with a bunch of filler extras added in for the sake of having a squad.

In short, it is more narrow than the game. What we saw in the battle this week was basically Alicia & Support. Alicia got hurt. Alicia charged into battle. Alicia was scared. Alicia got annoyed. Alicia was admired by everyone.

The other guys know how to point a weapon in the general direction of their opponents and fire. Thing is, in the game they had their own personalities and uses, in the anime, they are just "there"

I wont pretend that Alicia, Welkin, Isara, Largo, and Rosie shouldnt get the majority of the focus. Its something i expect, but you know, this is a plot driven series, not so character driven.

Next episode it looks like another Welkin and Alicia developement episode featuring make believe love triangles that have nothing to do with the story... and just sigh.

Nott enough all around detph for me i guess. Ill give this show a few weeks before I drop it and just play the game again.

Oh oh, and nobody of note died in this episode. The Empire needs to stop loading their IMMENSE NUMBER MACHINE GUNS AND BASE DEFFENSES, with those rubber bullets when by some miraculous coincidence they happen to be fighting Welkin's squad.

Only mistake I found is that the one you listed as Nina Streiss is actually Rosina Selden, a Lancer.

Thanks for pointing that out, I went ahead and corrected it :).

I'm more annoyed at Faldio at this point. That whole part where he's talking to Alicia and she's telling him to shut up was inane. I mean they're in the middle of an operation and it's obvious that he's antagonizing her. Then dropping the nut down her back, in most cases that probably would have caused them to be found out after the screaming and moving about, especially that close to the enemy camp.

Well, it seems there is more than meets the eye with Alicia. Also, with regards to the lack of realism with the battle and all.. I suggest we take it how it is and enjoy the ride.

And with Faldio and the reporter next week the romance part should be entertaining.

I haven't played the game.

The opening and the 1st episode immediately shows that we are going to get Alicia and Welkin.
And so far the "triangle" seems is just for ooh's and giggles.
Like I said in my earlier post, it doesn't matter whether you've played the game or not. We're still watching the same show after all.

Now, if you've played the game you'd probably wonder about it more, but this whole love triangle bit was mentioned in an interview with the director, so it's not that far off to think that this gets mentioned in a discussion of the anime.

I wish the series was one where I could just enjoy where it takes me, its just that one of the main points of the franchise is to touch upon the horrors of war. This would be alot more enjoyable if I hadnt touched the game.

I just rewatched the part in the game where they first meet Hans, and there isn't.

Anyway, can't wait for that Jann scene in the next episode. He's to epic to be ignored, so i'm glad we're seeing that in the preview for the next episode.

$80 says that the scenes with Jann and company are really just scenes with Ellet narrating. :heh:

I like to think the anime is more about the interactions of the characters, most notably Welkin and Alicia. While the game is well for the action aspect:)

I don't mind the whole triangle thingy going on, its a nice take on it all.

Alicia expressions are great as usual and I can't beleive I just noticed this but Hans's nose is in the shape of a up-side-down heart:heh:

As an anime episode, this was alright.

As an adaptation of the game it was horrible.

Alicia just gets dumber and dumber and dumber and even more tsun. Not to mention they decided to replicate one of the easier ways to win in the game... which also tends to make things less enjoyable overall. Alicia Rush =/= fun most of the time after all.

They really need to cut Faldio's airtime down to 1/100 of what he's getting and give it to Welkin. Seriously. The story is meant to be primarily about him and Alicia. Not some stalker-like womaniser.

Also:
... Irene is engaged. Exactly why is she stripping to get a story? Do we really need to have a strong-willed, modest (in dress sense at least, she even refused to wear a swimsuit in the beach episode!) side-character turned into a slut for no good reason? Really?

It's almost like they hired Uwe Boll's Japanese cousin to direct this.

Hell yeah. And anything with a Faldio is an automatic 10/10 for me. He's more interesting than Welkin will ever be. Welkin should just be a farmer and develop fertilizers.:eyespin: You're barking up the wrong tree ;)

Well, all I can say is that the episode was meh. I thought all the stuff between Alicia and Faldio was really, really dumb. I'm ok with there being a love triangle/polygon but the way they are doing AliciaxFaldio just feels really bad.

Also, for any interested, here are the names of the various squad members shown in squads 1 and 7 for this episode (they might change later on). Please correct me if I've made any mistakes :p:

Squad 1:
Faldio Landzaat - Scout (based on weapon being used)
Ramal (pet boy) - Shocktrooper (based on weapon being used)
Herbert Nielsen - Engineer
Wendy Cheslock - Shocktrooper
Rosina Selden - Lancer
Nils Daerden - Lancer
Musaad Mayfield - Scout
Mica Hawkins - Shocktrooper
Knute Jung - Engineer
Salinas Milton - Shocktrooper (not absolutely sure about this one)
Hannes Salinger - Shocktrooper

Squad 1:
Welkin Gunther - Tank Commander/Scout
Largo Potter - Lancer
Bridgette "Rosie" Stark - Shocktrooper
Oscar Bielert - Sniper
Emile Bielert - Sniper
Alicia Melchiot - Scout
Isara Gunther - Tank driver
Jann Walker - Lancer
Susie Evans - Scout
Marina Wulfstan - Sniper
Edy Nelson - Shocktrooper
Homer Peron - Engineer
Karl Landzaat - Engineer

They also show Aisha Neuman (Shocktrooper) in the next episode preview with the other 7's.

Interesting to note that Squad 1 is heavily biased towards shocktroopers and Squad 7 had 3 snipers at it's disposal (thought they didn't show anyone using a sniper rifle). One would think they would have sent one of the snipers with the ambush group, would have saved Alicia from getting shot at.Salinas is in fact a Shockie.

Are there really a wigged pig in the game ?Hans is in the game, yes. He wasn't quite so... cutesy.

While the episode was enjoyable, it wasn't amazing. More action was good. Largo wielding a lance was excellent. Rosie's being somewhat flanderized; hopefully we'll see her grow... I'm afraid of the fact that I'm saying that about practically everyone in this anime (save Isara ).

Faldio's being an asshole to Alicia. I think it would be funny if she eventually chose Welkin because all Faldio does is annoy her. (I mean seriously. The girl tells him to shut up (with respect) three times in the same words) I know he's a ladies' man, but let's have him show that with someone, anyone else? It's obvious why they had Faldio here (for some set up to later actions), but why are they starting this so early? Are they gonna skip some of the later set up?!

Clearly I need to treat this as an AU. So far, a worse universe to boot.

Welkin should just be a farmer and develop fertilizers.:eyespin:That in itself makes Welkin more interesting to me. He uses what he knows, animals, to make battle strategies that work. Plus, some of the things that he has appeared aloof to has worked in his favor, like General Damon last episode. Meh. . .I've never been a fan of the 'ladies man' side character, anyway.

Training scenes tend to be boring affairs for the most part, altho I don't mind if a training scene is inserted, I would hope they wouldn't make it at any great lengths.

The anime is clearly gearing towards character interaction, I don't see any need for such a scene at this point really.

what I never got is why they needed to know of the animal trail in order to come up with the flanking maneuver.

I think Hans got... what? About four cutscenes (out of about... 50? 60+?) worth of screentime in the actual main story, plus two reports where he was a main character?

Honestly though, if the pig eats massively into Faldio's screentime, and then Welkin picks up some of it as well, I'll praise Hans for his actions.

Edit: The animal trail made sense... in the game. You see, the Kloden Wildwood has a reputation: if you go in and you don't know your way or aren't on a road/path you WILL get lost and you WILL die. Therefore a flanking attack is all but impossible under most circumstances. Welkin spotted the animal trail when they were only a few hundred metres from, and out of sight of, the main guard post leading to the supply base. Because they were so close to the base, Welkin could judge that the general direction of the animal trail would prove useful to them, and then we had said battle plan as shown in the anime... except Faldio was nowhere to be seen as it should be!

On animal trails it is easier to move through. If you have to make your own it would be noticeable to the enemy and it takes more time.

I'm a little late commenting on Valkyria Chronicles, but I've been liking it so far, albeit not quite to the extent that I expected/hoped for. One of the nice things about the show is that it pays attention to real tactics, and uses them as resolutions to problems instead of using gimmicks. The latter is a trend that I can see the show veering towards from time to time, but it can avoid it for the most part. In fact, I think that this episode could have been more entertaining had it used even more realistic tactics than what we saw (will someone please use cover? :)). Still, Valkyria Chronicles is better on this score than most anime that I can think of.

As an aside on national analogs, the use of German equipment, uniforms (Welkin's uniform is a dead giveaway) and iconography puts Gallia as WWII Germany. The Empire is much more of a mishmash, but it seems to mostly be a combination of the Soviet Union and Imperial Russia.

I love how 2 platoons can take a base...
It's not the most horribly realistic scenario, but you can chalk it up to game mechanics. As an additional caveat, we don't know the size of the base (it looks awfully small), and since Squad 7 was deemed sufficient force to take it, it shouldn't be all that big. Admittedly, this doesn't jive with the amount of importance placed upon it by both sides (general-rank officers assigned by both sides), but the forces at their disposal didn't seem to be that large either.

Actually this does bring up a good point. Welkin is said to be the CO of Squad 7 of a Militia regiment. Does that mean that the regiments are so small that their maneuver elements are squads (making them either company or platoon sized), or that the Militia squads are much bigger than real life ones. I get the feeling that it's the latter; that Squad 7 is about equivalent of a modern platoon, and it seems to be confirmed when the Imperial soldier reported the Gallian attacking force as company-sized.

On a semi-related note, why is it that anime almost always use IJA ranks for their fictional militaries? I think that I've seen SDF ranks used just once or twice, most notably in Zipang, and that was because most of the main cast were members of the SDF.

And I've never even seen them train.

Not once. I'd like to see them running some drills or something. ITS A WAR!
Why though? We already know that they have had some training, and running drills and the like aren't that exciting when they can depict more interesting events instead. The only exception is to show specialized training, but that smacks of the kind of gimmicky storytelling that I hope the show avoids.

If they had the extra time, I'd much rather see more involvement from the other soldiers - there's got to be more to them than just Rosie and Largo.

I want to see the Drill Sergeant in the anime. :(
I'm much more sad at the lack of machinegunners. Seeing German-esque infantry in the field without their ubiquitous machine guns is awfully strange. And for that matter, where are the Imperial machine guns?

In the game's original incarnation, Squad 7 is not a squad, but appropriately termed as Platoon 7. Welkin is the platoon leader of platoon 7, which comprises of approximately 50 members. However, when the game was exported, the term was somehow mistranslated to squad, and now the term stuck.

Now that makes a lot more sense. If a regiment had, say 10 x "squads" of 50 riflemen, that'd be a strength of some 500 personnel. It's also a lot more reasonable for a tank to be attached to a platoon than to a squad.

It also wouldn't be a very effective military if they made all their junior lieutenants into squad commanders. The original translation error is a bit on the goofy side though - how many people did the translator think that squads had?

It was more of a curious observation than a complaint. While I understand that the sho- chu- tai- system is easy for even non-Japanese speakers to grasp, it's not as if the SDF ranks are all that complicated. So why would every single production out there still decide to use outdated terms?

Unfortunately, you actually only get to see 1 machine-gun-like weapon in the game, as well :heh:

No machine guns? Nah, that's impossible. Machine guns have formed the backbone of modern squad-level tactics ever since the evolution of such tactics in World War I. The German MG42 was so obiquitous that it was in every single infantry squad, and that it's the one iconic weapon of the German infantryman. Heck, it's so popular that the Bundeswehr uses a modern version of it to this day. Go ahead and pull the other leg - next, you'd be claiming silly stuff like nobody uses mortars or something like that. :heh:

I'd also like to note that the show seems to be a lot more lax in regards to the uniforms and equipment than the game is. I can only see this as an improvement since military classes work as a game mechanic, but they're outside of it. It would also strongly play against the whole amateur soldier aesthetic.

Does that mean that all platoon commanders lead from a command tank? In any case, even if you don't like the Faldio/Alicia interplay, it'd make a lot of sense for him to not use his tank on that particular mission. His job was to get to the supply base unseen, and tanks are nowhere as stealthy as infantry.

Btw I dont know if this has bin explained or not, either way I forgot, but who started this war and what is this war about?
It was semi-explained in the first episode. Gallia has large deposits of ragnite ore, and it's the substance used to power just about everyone's vehicles. The Eastern Empire invaded for that ore to fuel their war against the Atlantic Federation.

For several reasons. Some believe that the modern SDF ranks have been Yankeefied to a point that it is unsuitable for something like Valkyria, moreover, older terms are applied precisely because they were outdated, since they were last prominently used from the era of the big one.

Others believe that the SDF is just that, a self-defense-force, which is not applicable to the work of fiction where armies are often not restricted by some clause such as article 9.

Aye, but I speak the truth. There are no squad-level support machine guns in the game. Those few that appear are stationary turrets. The closest thing to a modern machine gun in the game are the weapons carried by shock troopers, although they carry sub-machine guns (but the game would rather name them machine guns).

The actual portable machine gun that appears in the game? Well, it was used like how Rambo would use his.

Uhm. a Regiment is bigger than a bataillon and a bataillon already has a troop strength of 800 to 1200 soldiers. And a squad can have more than one tank.
Here is an example on how a Tank Bataillon on German standard is lined up: http://www.pzbtl293.de/gliederung.html

It also wouldn't be a very effective military if they made all their junior lieutenants into squad commanders. The original translation error is a bit on the goofy side though - how many people did the translator think that squads had?

Why not? The backbone of the German army is are the NCOs. Leading a Squad is the first step in the career of an officer which they have to pass to claim higher rank. It's a position where they have to learn and to earn the respect of their soldiers.

MG is very powerful but you won't really hit a person carrying the MG like John Rambo. I know that because I tried it in my military weapon education with an MG 3 (upgrade version of the MG 42). Btw. Not the MG 42 was iconic weapon. It was the beer  .

Btw. I do have a reason why Faldio did not used a tank.
1. We have two officers: Welkin and Faldio
2. Alicia may be an option to lead the backtroop but this leaves Faldio without command. Not officers like.
3. Faldio has more experience in leading soldiers up to squad strength.
4. A tank would alarm the Imps that they are planning a 2 front battle.

kalbron

... who said that Faldio had to go with the tank on a flanking attack? Two tanks + infantry is far more of a threat than one tank, so if he'd been as part of the frontal assault, there would have likely been less troops left in the base.

Its not like they actually needed an officer in the flank attack given that Alicia ignored him and everyone else followed Alicia's orders.

Le sigh. Machine guns are as dangerous as they are because 1) they have stable bipod and perferably tripod mounts and 2) they are crew by multiple soldiers, thereby spreading the responsibility of killing the enemy. It's things like this that don't make me regret not buying the game.

So basically Gallia is just caught in between war The Eastern Empire and Atlantic Federation? bummer, now I really want Gallia too win.
Not really, but you are supposed to feel sorry for the Gallians.

I beg to differ
We're talking about World War II-esque tanks that can be heard several kilometers away, so they'd easily give their position away.

Uhm. a Regiment is bigger than a bataillon and a bataillon already has a troop strength of 800 to 1200 soldiers. And a squad can have more than one tank.
Here is an example on how a Tank Bataillon on German standard is lined up: http://www.pzbtl293.de/gliederung.html
Sure, but there's a difference between a paper strength and an actual strength just as there is between the numbers of combat personnel and all personnel in a military unit. An actual regimental strength of 500 combatants is eminently reasonable.

Why not? The backbone of the German army is are the NCOs. Leading a Squad is the first step in the career of an officer which they have to pass to claim higher rank. It's a position where they have to learn and to earn the respect of their soldiers.
It's mostly a difference between the amount of training a junior officer needs versus how many a military organization can be expected to field. Even in a military where the NCOs are the most important role (which is just about all militaries), it becomes extremely inefficient to have too great an officer to enlisted ratio, especially in combat infantry formations. That's why green lieutenants are generally assigned to platoons, where they can be babysat by the senior NCO until they get some seasoning - you can't do that at the squad level because you're not going to have enough good senior NCOs to go around.

I'm really talking more of anime in general, but there's nothing intrinsic in the SDF ranks that restrict them to a self-defense role, so I imagine that there would have to be some other sort of dynamic at play. The reaction against perceived Yankification seems to be a much more plausible explanation.

Well Gallia certainly doesn't use mortars, but the game has the Imperials lobbing them and incinidary shells at you all over the place.

Oh and in the game ALL the platoon commanders wear the same outfit as Welkin. Including a certain map which they hang around their necks. Like, you know, a tank commander would have. So I really wonder why the heck Faldio didn't have his tank on the mission except so that the director could add in a retarded Faldio x Alicia dynamic.
WHAT!? :twitch: Mortars and incendiary shells? Gallia doe not even have that? Whaaaaaaaaaat? I used to be a captain in the military and that makes things totally unfair then again Edelweiss makes hell for the enemy but not as much as mortars and incendiary shells would.

I beg to differ

A frontal attack with two tanks without knowing how much resource the enemy has is more a risk than a threat. Not to mention what would happen when the Imps are using their lancers.

And the other thing is that the flank attack is going through a thick terrain. A tank is there really not a benefit.

So far for me it looks like this anime's couple is FaldioxAlicia. Welkin has so little screen time that it is hard to consider him as someone who could be involved in romantic relationship.

If they are doing a love triangle they are doing it wrong since I do not get any romantic vibes from Alicia/Welkin interactions. And Faldio'sxAlicia's dinamics, though look much closer to being romantic, are so retarded that bores to death. Rest of the squad looks pretty much faceless.

So far - pretty mediocre anime and romance in it is simply pitiable. I will watch one or maybe two episodes at best before seeing if I'll drop it or not, but since I will probably see more of that Faldio/Alicia nonsese I am guessing I will drop it.

The first platoon is for command, logistics and supply while 2nd, 3rd and 4th platon are the combat platoons. 2/291 I assume has been added or is the reserve platoon. Which still means we came to a combat personell of about 500 to 600 ppl including their tanks.

Also, can I ask who is the main character in the anime? So far it seems like Alicia. Welkin is sort of secondary character, not really important. He is not even main characters (Alicia's) love interest at all. He seems to be better off with fertilizers.

It saddens seeing how his character is pathetic compared to game so far. Like most of characters. Alicia is turned into a stupid tsundere is pretty annoying. I like tsundere's by the way, but I like those who have some character depth, something that Alicia's character is lacking considerably. Idiotic dynamics between her and Faldio doenst help much either. Though I am glad they kep the crap joke, this anime so far proves to be largely disappointing.

Different? Really? In both posts you are bitching about the lack of character Welkin requires to be the main character (no pun intended). In the first post, you claim that Welkin is sort of secondary character while in the 2nd you stated that It saddens seeing how his character is pathetic compared to game so far.

Both look like to me that you are bitching about his role as the protagonist. Now, if you cannot see the similarities between the two accusations you have made, and insist on posting something about it, then don't bother explain the two paragraphs' supposed differences, for you just left yourself wide open with that one.

You are impatient because you would post two posts bitching, yet not acknowledging the fact that this anime is still at its early stages.

On the other hand, you claim to have played the game, but if you did, you will know which mission this episode is depicting and you will also recognize that this mission occurred in the very early chapters of the game.

I'm mostly talking about World War II era machine guns like the MG42. The second crewman is important for maintaining a sustained rate of fire with helping with ammunition belts and replacement barrels. He is even more important for increasing the lethality of the weapon - a crew manned weapon abrogates the responsibility for the potentially killing shot and allows for more rounds on target.

I believe you have looked on the Scheme on how a Tank batailon is build up. If you look, then the first platoon has 4 Tanks. Sure, and depending on the military in question, a regiment might well just field that one battalion. In any case, my point was that a 500-combatant regiment was a much more reasonable size than one made up of a dozen or so squads.

I know what you mean but still an officer is an officer and a sergeant is a sergeant. If the structure says that the squad is led by an officer not even a senior NCO can do against. I'm not all that good with weaponry, but in the game the enemy (imperials) does use what it calls a "Heavy Gatling Turret" I believe. These are mounted on a tripod with an enemy unit behind controlling it. I would expect that these would show up eventually in the anime as well. They were also kind of a pain to deal with in the game if you couldn't get around behind them because they do quite a lot of damage.

Ah, so now we have a name for Faldio's second-in-command: Ramal.
Alicia constantly telling Faldio to refrain from small talk was funny and cold.
"A nervous soldier is worse than any other soldier." Wise words, Faldio. Very wise.

A corporal has no commanding authorities if not assigned by a sergeant or an officer. I already mentioned earlier that the Backbone of the BW are the Sergeants. A Squad can be lead by a Sergeant but it can also be lead by a junior officer. It depends on what the task of the squad (description is in the STAN of the unit) is or if the junior officer felt in disgrace in the eyes of the platoons sergeant major :heh:. Ok. Last ist more a joke. It does really make sense that a junior officer is assigned to lead a squad because it's the smalles unit with enough personnel responsibilities.

But after watching the first five episodes a had to write this...

Director: So what are we doing today?
Writer: Valkyria Chronicles anime adaptaion.
D: Aaa that visual novel , with the very stupid, unrealistic, uninteresting plot, and the most stupid romance I ever seen.
W: Huh?
D: Dont wory, i got an idea, the plot will be uninportant, we will focus on the romance.
W: Huh?
D: Why romance you ask?, its simple because the plot cant be saved, but the romance can be improved a lot.
W: I think it worked very good in the game, why change it?
D: Wait till you hear my vision. We have two characters, Welkin and Alicia. Lets make Welkin a over the top easygoing airhead with a big brain.
And here comes the twist, COMPLETE opposites attract. So lets make Alicia a very, very, very stupid tsundere.
W: But i loved Alicia and Welkin in the game, why change them so much??
D: Wait till you hear this......Alicia will make funny faces EVERY SINGLE episode, so that the audience will never get bored or annoyed!
W: ...
D: You are speechless I see, but wait till you hear this, we are making a love triangle!
W: God why???
D: Why you ask?, its simple, you cant have a romance without a love triangle, that kind of romance does not exist in real life. The triangle will make the love soooooo much more EPIC...
W: ....................whatever, who will be the rival??
D: That bishie dude from squad 1.
W: Faldio??, but he and Alicia barely interacted in the game.
D: Not a problem, that was the game biggest fault, but we have to change his personality. Hmm, lets see he will be like a 5 year old. You now like that kind of a man who never shuts up, is a womaniser and trows nuts on you while you fighting. He will be a worthy rival and many people will root for him.
W: He is the commander of squad 1, I hope you now.
D: Of course I now, but we cant have two smart commanders, it would completely ruin the show, we have to stay faithfull to real life interaction.
W: ...
D: Speechless again huh?, wait till you hear everything from my grand vision. Episodes 1-3 wil be AliciaxWelkin, episodes 4-5 AliciaxFaldio, episodes 6-7 AliciaxWelkin and so on and on. I hope you get the point. How many episodes do we actualy have?
W: I guess 26.
D: Excelent, Alicia will make her choice in episode 24, and here comes the big plot twist....are you ready??...it will be Welkin!!! Nobody will see that one coming. It will be totaly unexpected. But I have to tell you there is a very small hint in the OP that only a few people will be able to decipher.
W: ...
D: ...
W: Have you watched the OP?
D: Yes.
W: Have you REALLY watched the OP?
D: Yes of course. Why?
W: Nevermind...
D: This will be the best shoujo comedy of the year, we have so many great characters, the love story is very believable, unexpected and moving, we have improved the game in every aspect.
W: What about the plot?
D: What plot?
W: The war against imperial forces...
D: Aaaaa, episodes 25 and 26 will be about that.

PS: sorry for bad grammar...:p

Ice-CooL, could not put it in better. It really does feel like a cheap shoujo, with only one protoganist (Alicia) while the supposed second one (Welkin) is more like an important figure in the background plot-wise, but somewhat has very little screen-time wise. On the other hand because he is such an excessive airhead he is pretty annoying character so the fact that his role is reduced may be a god's blessing. Its just that watching Faldio/Alicia is even worse.

Some viewers think of his character as being secondary because of his lack of interaction with Alicia in this episode. As far as determining the importance of characters, this is a bit of a poor litmus test, so you don't have to get worked up about it.

And does anyone know the numbers involved in this war? It seems to me like the whole Gallian Military was wiped out in that attack back in ep 4.
I'm curious as to the numbers and scale of the conflict as well, but it's clear that all that was lost was the company or battalion that Damon sent up against the supply base. The only reason it's confusing is because the show/game decided to make him a general rather than a major or colonel. There's no reason for the losses to be much greater than that, and if they were, we would have seen a very different reaction from the Gallian high command. For one thing, they certainly wouldn't be trying to attack again.

Tyrone Biggums, he is plot important character but his limited screen-time so far makes him look like more of a background figure (important figure but not main character-type figure).

So far only Alicia stands out as the main character while Welkin is pushed behind to make an equal love triangle, too bad that they pushed him so far that it is not love triangle at the moment but just a retarded pair of Alicia/Faldio.

Doesn't mean that it won't change but thats the impression after 5 episodes of anime which looks more and more like a shoujo with some battle elements.

If they keep on same shit as throwing nuts behind ones back in the middle of operation just for the sake of flirting then I'd rather there would be no romance at all... Its just too retarded.

I find it hard to believe that the enemy who obviously have had this base under their control for a good while did explore the forest on the far side of the base to see if there was anyway for a small infiltration group to approach. They under estimated their enemy and got sloppy hence their defeat. Kudos to Welkin for not overly pursuing the enemy you gotta know when to call it quits and pushing forward would have served to put both squads in more danger.

Why so worked up on the pairing? Many of you accuse Welkin for being secondary ... just because he didn't get it on with Alicia? That appears to me like the only basis in which Welkin's status deteriorated according to some of you.

Really?

So Faldio stole Welkin's thunder at certain points and now he is the main character? Why force the pairing on Welkin when he is at this time just not ready for it? And honestly, do you have to be constantly distributing romantic vibes in order to claim the status that is the protagonist?

May I remind you that Welkin is the individual responsible for Gallian victories from episode 1 ~ 5? He was the one who devised strategies and led the Gallian forces to victory while accomplishing what the Gallian army could not?

It annoys me greatly that just because there is a male... and female cast and thus they must be shipped, as if shipping is the first and only priority of this show. Guys, this is a military drama, no matter how unrealistic it is, but in any case, it is not a friggin romantic comedy. Get a clue.

justinstrife, playing the game does very little in terms of knowing the relationship, because they change it to form a non-existing love-triangle. I know who should and will be the main pairing eventaully (as obvious from intro) but the whole attempt of pushing the retarded Faldio/Alicia (technically if there would follow game there would be no such relationship to begin with, but they already changed it and the result is rather frustrating - as in the whole nuts thing during the battle operation) is nothing to be happy about. If it was somewhat normal - maybe, but so far they look like a pair of retards, which makes a potential perspective of seeing more of this crap further on not very encouraging.

For now, commenting only anime and those 5 episodes that were released they are actually trying to push the whole Faldio/Alicia too hard, no mater how idiotic it looks, and forming a pair of retards rather than a love triangle.

Yes I saw preview of ep 6, so? According to you if in episode 6 it is Welkin/Alicia, then no Faldio/Alicia happens after that in the rest episodes? I would really wish so, but I think we will see more of that the dumb pair in the future.

Kudos to Welkin for not overly pursuing the enemy you gotta know when to call it quits and pushing forward would have served to put both squads in more danger.

Coupled with the fact that they're a militia group up against a regular. How they rolled to a victory is also beyond me. This feels like one of those unbelievable elements in the game that does not translate well into anime. As with all strategy games, taking no casualty is pretty much the standards of each mission. But realistically...

See, this what I exactly meant by changes from the original being such a risk. Sometimes, such changes are given too much focus that they miss the point of the entire story in the first place. Hopefully, this won't be too much of a recurring thing.

But honestly, I have no problem with Faldio being pushed into the limelight more as he's an interesting character. However, if the anime is just doing this to add something extra to the anime and filling up all those 26 episodes, then they're doing it wrong.

There are a lot of extra characters in Squad 7 for Pete's sake..! Do something with them. Last time I checked, Edy and co. got themselves some DLC not Faldio. I would prefer to see more interaction among the members of Squad 7. They're not grunts. Make me care about these other characters, in other words.

Well in all fairness the game itself focused a lot on those two becoming a couple even more so then the war itself. lt wasn't in your face all the time but it was there...it was cute...it was enjoyable.:)

Like i previously said, i give them until episode 10 to do something with the members of Squad 7. If not, then it'll be obvious to see they won't do anything with them.

It's not even a gamer thing, i mean people who're watching this without any game knowledge should be able to see how they're just basically apart of the background. It's so frustrating.

That is totally incorrect. Mortars, even artillery appear as support weapons for Gallian forces. However, authorizing their use is another story.

Its amazing how 2 simple maneuvers can win the day. Distraction and a pincer are the most basic of military maneuvers and are more often than not very effective when used properly.
No kidding. Simple tactics are generally much more effective than complex ones pretty much because they're tried and true, and because they have relatively few points of failure.

I find it hard to believe that the enemy who obviously have had this base under their control for a good while did explore the forest on the far side of the base to see if there was anyway for a small infiltration group to approach. I'm chalking this to poetic license. A properly led force would do 1) proper reconnaisance of it's surrounding terrain, and 2) always maintain an effective reserve in case this exact kind of thing happens. Since the base was deemed important enough to assign a general(!) to oversee, it should have had the proper defenses as well. A single machine gun or mortar emplacement would have put paid to the entire flank attack. But that doesn't make for a very good story, so I'm willing to cut the creators a bit of slack here.

Kudos to Welkin for not overly pursuing the enemy you gotta know when to call it quits and pushing forward would have served to put both squads in more danger.
I thought that this was great as well. Not only had Welkin secured his objective, but he would be playing into his enemies' hands by pursuing a numerically superior force thereby squandering all of his advantages for very little gain. I see this kind of withdraw all the time in military-themed anime whereby the attacker decides to not press the advantage, but it's rarely handled so well.

Well, yes, especially if you are this girl, you'd be shipping anything with 2 legs.

Taking no casualties is something else that can be put down to poetic license - it's more an artefact of the game to anime translation than any thing else. However, there's nothing at all unusual about regular forces being beaten by a militia. This kind of outcome often comes down to how well led a force is than its opposition than the "status" of the two groups. Moreover, both sides were about equally well-equipped. If you want a real life example, there's one of Tito's partisans kicking the Germans out of Yugoslavia in World War II.

To be fair, the anime creators are trying to do something a bit different from the game, so a difference in focus shouldn't be that big a deal. That said, I'd also like to see more from the other characters in Squad 7 - if only to put into context their morale and attitudes towards Welkin, Alicia, Isara, and so forth. We've got the views of Rosie and Largo, but I'd like something a little meatier.

To be frank, the anime probably took too many liberties with the story in regards to Kloden Wildwood, which is why it seems silly that there's two Generals and their armies deployed to cover one small woodland base, and being beaten by two platoons.

As this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSUYz1YkTJQ) shows, the Imperials had set up defences to cover the plausible routes of attack against their base, and the animal trail only enabled Squad/Platoon 7 to sneak a number of troops through a lightly guarded "side door".

Not only that, but there weren't any Generals there before the attack, only Jaeger and his Lupus tank showing up later on to organise an orderly withdrawl because they intended to abandon the base in the first place!

So yeah. Game scenario = logical. Anime scenario = wtf?

I know and I know, but it's best to save it for threads where the "victim" is a participant so that you don't spread the wrong idea.

To be honest, from the linked video, there doesn't seem to be all that much difference between the two depictions aside from General-ranked officers being present in the anime. What you describe is precisely what happened except that Squad 7 also provided the troops to fix the main Imperial force in place. Realistically speaking, a supply base of this nature (and supposed significance) would be run by hundreds of personnel, and they'd be present unless the front was being broken up by a larger assault. In all other cases, the soldiers running the supply base would still be present to repel any attacks. It's almost impossible to envisage a scenario where a small platoon-sized infantry force can take the base on their own.

Speaking of which I just noticed that Faldio's squad is made up of members that are recruited in Squad 7 from the game. So in essence, the whole thing was squad 7 to begin with Faldio and that boy tagging along.

And if we are to argue the base's defense, the base itself seems awfully small for such an important position. I just don't see how a base could support the Imperial's central army's supplies.

It is awfully small, but the larger it is, the less plausible it is that it could be taken by a small force as well. In a more realistic situation, such a base would be located near a road and/or rail junction and be broken up into multiple depots, spread out over dozens of kilometers, making it impossible for it to be sneak attacked like that. It would never be placed inside a forest like that, nor would it ever be close enough to enemy lines to be attacked. But the show is based on a game, and it's only expected that concessions are made for game mechanics.

Well that's partially due to the fact that it's an A-rank run on the base. Meaning people don't try and clear out every enemy that's there. If you watch the map you'll notice that the scouts spot troops in various strategic defensive positions. The person playing it just avoided them by exploiting the enemy AI, that's all.

Also, Jaeger was only sent there to ensure that the withdrawl was completed. It had already begun long before Squad 7 got there, hence why you could easily say it was undermaned. Otherwise there'd be no way that they'd have been able to empty out all the supplies from the base like what is said to happen.

Basically the base wasn't a good idea in the first place really, as Kloden really doesn't let anything move through it in great numbers, so it was doing very little at all for the Imperials. I'm guessing the only reason it was established was so that the Empire could more easily move down south into Federation territory after the "cakewalk" of beating Gallia.

All things considered, the base was pretty much insignificant given the main two thrusts of the Empire came from far further north. If you want an idea of exactly where this supply base was this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADhbEvom3HA&feature=related) shows at the end where the invasion came from. The base is a fair distance SE of Randgriz/that large lake you can see.

(Also note that the game really doesn't have too many scenarios where there's more than ~20 enemy soldiers at any rate, so for its time and place in the game Kloden really is rather heavily fortified.)

Edit: Having re-watched the scenes again it seems more that the base Squad 7 took was simply one of perhaps many. Or perhaps not. It's somewhat vague. Ah well. Guess even the game doesn't hold up to too much scrutiny. XD

I was mostly just commenting on the layout of the battlefield and the dispositions. I ignored the actual gameplay part because of game mechanics and all.

Here it's still very much a question of frontage and proximity of the frontlines. Unless the Imperial troops were overrun by a Gallian offensive, there should still have been a lot of force interposed in front of the base.

My point of speculating what a "realistic" base of this nature would look like doesn't posit it to support some sort of huge force. Basically, any base for even divisional-level forces would have to be of that kind of magnitude.

Again, I'm not really criticizing the game or anything like that - the reality of game mechanics means that a lot of liberty has to be taken with realism, and that's only to be expected. I haven't played the game, but I wouldn't imagine it to be any more realistic than, say Front Mission 4, so that kind of thing is alright.

On another note Faldio calling Alicia a Valkyur I found this as interesting.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyrie

You all want to know why Alicia is like that? Because Valkyries were female warriors that were proud of themselves including to serve Odin. For them to choose their lover they have to be careful because Odin knows that the person who their lover should he not be worthy he will be slain. In my religion we have contact with Odin as a belief so I know. Alicia does not get intimidated that easily at all.

Yeah, and I suppose you have exclusive access to Wikipedia.

This is absolutely irrelevant, and totally unrelated to the story as it does very little in helping to explain the character of Alicia.

Aside from being warriors and female, the Valkyries of this anime is drastically different than the Valkyries of myth. I do not believe I need to explain why.

At this time, I think its best you stop contradicting yourself and get a fucking clue, because its getting very irritating.

I just finished the episode and I'm currently re-clearing the game. I think maybe that's a bad idea because I'm obviously extremely partial to the game and thought it was darn near perfect while the anime has been... disappointing... so far.

And I think what I've found most entertaining about this board so far has been the arm-chair general discussions I've been able to observe. :)
