For the most part, an average episode. The usual characters do the usual things.
The part with the Christmas party and afterwards was pretty fun though.
Still... The loli forms of Yui and her sister sure were deformed... (o_o) The thinness of their legs were almost to the creepy level...

How can that be average..the part when Sawako made her appearance really turns this episode into a 9/10 lol.
A Christmas episode...pretty straightforward i guess.Having a party, exchange presents and games...yeah yeah everyone does it.Well at least Sawako sensei made it a lil bit different this year. And with that attitude of her,i can pretty much guess why she also became the "Xmas cake leftover" just like Nanako sensei.
Yeah ninja Sawako..probably the creepiest ninja i had ever seen so far, especially when she crawled like that...

Heh.... K-ON is at its best with episodes like this. Good work, good work there.

I found myself thinking "now how much screen time will Sawa-chan get?:D"
Man, now I'm just gonna be thinking that every episode...
lol putting Sawa-chan aside, Mugi-chan was the only one enjoying the present exhange:D
Poor Mio-chan, she THOUGHT that help just stepped in... too bad 'help' just turn-tailed:heh:
Something new this episode: Mio and Mugi are now diet comrades:heh:
Since this is a discussion/poll thread, are there any subs yet? I can't seem to find one.. just raws..
For K-ON, you can normally expect for the early subs to come out on Fridays, earlier than that it's all RAW, unadultered talk.

LOL Sawa-chan is great as always, loved that tummy slap thingy also her ninja entrance:D
just a whole load of nice lovely moments that just made this ep really enjoyable for me.
Mio with side ponytail in a kimino = win!!!
we need more Sawa-chan!!!

It seems like in this episode Ui had a more major role than usual. I approve of this because I liked the idea of seeing more of her. As well as seeing her interact with her sister. Mio's outfit with the side ponytail was good. However I also enjoyed Tsumugi's outfit with the white hat(?) as well. In general, I enjoyed the episode. I'm definitely looking forward to the next batch of episodes. Especially if what I'm hoping will happen does eventually happen. For certain I like what I'm seeing in the preview.

Very cute episode, enjoyed every second of it. After 7 episode, I definitely think is the best show of the season.
Thank you Sawa-chan, now I know a good hint to for give for Japanese Maple! rofl~ That would really hurt though...lol
Who else besides me couldn't stop smiling throughout the whole episode? Was pretty warming. Yui and her sister were pretty cute, actually Yui is just a cute character overall. HOW MANY KILOS DID YOU GAIN?
I'm already depressed know that this series will be short and end is coming soon...

I'm prepared for the influx of images of Mio in a kimono/christmas outfit with ponytail. God, I can imagine the images of moe destruction already.
What happened to the art at points? The legs and body proportions were a wreck at the start. Those are not lolis that I liked. Also, at the point of Yui in the futatsu. I'm kinda shocked at the art quality there.
4 lives next episode? More songs? More CDs? Bring it on!
Since this is a discussion/poll thread, are there any subs yet? I can't seem to find one.. just raws..
Usual release from CoalGuys is around 2:30-3:00p (+8:00 GMT). Yeah, CoalGuys just released the subs an hour ago.
I thought this episode was a total waste of time. Hopefully the episodes coming up will be much better...
I thought this episode was a total waste of time. Hopefully the episodes coming up will be much better...
If you actually mean that, then you're talking about the past 6 episodes as well. I see no difference.
Really enjoyed this episode. Sister love is so beautiful.
Sawako needs more metal dammit ;)
Naw, the episode was alright, although I think they rushed through all the scenes.
After reading the manga chapters this episode covers, I can really really appreciate the extra character development in the anime even though some of it is so saccharine it makes my bones itch. Well, that being said it is still really really good to see character development and backstory rather than having to extrapolate character traits through somewhat disjointed 4koma.
Another great episode of K-On!
The wish of Ui for a white Christmas and Yui's fulfillment of her sister's wish is so sweet and cute. Mio is super cute in her red Kimono.
Is it true (or not) that female teachers (in Japan) are always having difficulties when it comes to getting a boyfriend/ getting married in real life? In anime/manga it's a very common thing (+ drinking habit): in Tora Dora, Azumanga, Lucky Star etc..

I believe it has more something to do with the fact that most of the time the only adults we get to see in an anime/manga are teachers, even the parents get left out a lot. And in order to present them in a "funny" light, they are kind of portrayed as "social failures".

Mio + ponytail + hair ornament + kimono = So moe I di-URRRRRRKKKKKKK......
I love these kind of episodes that are pure fun yet also show different things about some of the characters. This and episode 4 are my favorites for this series so far.
High points:
Chibi Yui & Ui @ Christmastime
Seeing the sisterly bond between Yui & Ui
Mugi's blissful state @ the party
The gift exchange
Sawa-chan always comes prepared with extra outfits
Nodoka walking in on Sawa-chan stripping Mio was SO a Haruhi moment. So awesome.
Mugi & Mio's outrage @ Yui's metabolism
As above, Mio in a kimono with a ponytail...KyoAni really wants to kill us with moe, don't they?
I give this ep a 9/10 for being totally fun and enjoyable while also yet again proving just how awesome Yui is. Apparently it runs in the family since Ui is also awesome in her own way.

Is there a fashion designer working in KyoAni? I mean, the casual clothes of the girls are so moe especially the one Mio wears... Oh wait. Mio is always moe in whatever costumes she wears. :)
I hope Santa Mio visits me this Christmas. :)
Yui steal the show in this week for me.
She is just too cute and I like how she always doing her idle mode (Black and White Eye with Frozen Smile)..
and Mugi is the one who actually enjoy the Christmas to the fullest...
and what happen tot he gentle Sawako that I used to know?
and again, airhead = awesome. It literally broke Sawako for couple of times.
Mio got raped...

The Sweet Sawako Sensei we knew has gone, gone forever. I did get quite a few laughs from how she reacted to Yui's comments. Yui while not as moe, the outfit Sawako made her and Mio wear I thought really suited her.
Mugi shows again she is such a caring considerate person, I thought it sweet that the party was the best Christmas party she had ever been too and she gave a up a trip to Hawaii so she could get a game they could play at the party.
Ritsu's teasing of Mio was quite funny especially when searching for gifts. You know she is the character who likes things to be as abnormal and fun as possible which is quite an appeal
Mio again showed no-one can wear outfits and look so moe while doing so than she is with her shyness. Quite a nice wardrobe she wore in this episode as well.
Forget Mio, I want to marry Ui-chan too.
Nice episode. A good stress reliever for me after a stressful day. This episode basically made my day. I will give it 9 out of 10.
If they omit the lottery part and spend more time on New Year part, I will give it a perfect score.

It's not just this series, just about every KyoAni series I've watched in recent years has gone to great lengths to create varied wardrobes for the characters, which I must say is something I appreciate. I've long since gotten sick of series where the characters wear the same clothes in every single episode.
So high moe level. I'm glad I'm alive. ;__;
Also, a very cute episode of Yui & Ui.

I really loved this episode, it was alot more like the first two in that we werent forced to like anyone it was nice, relaxed and genuinely funny.
I'm also with Ritsu, can I marry Ui? shes awesome I'd put her up there as one of my favourite characters in the show.
I do have one slight gripe with the episode and I cant believe I'm saying this because normally I hate it when people use this phrase but...
The scene at the temple was funnier in the manga
in the manga Mio and Ritsu predict that Yui spent the entire holiday doing nothing but eat whilst sitting under the bed thing (no idea what its called), Yui looks shocked and asks if they were peaking.
Now I know why Ui love her sister so much, really a good pair of sister.
and Mio in Kimono is real real awesome!!!
ahhh... they skipped Mugi in Kimono!!!... :(

Agreed. :heh: That's one of the reasons why KyoAni is my most favorite studio. They really put the extra effort in their work.
Now, I want a fashion show of characters from KyoAni shows. :D

Episode 7 article is up:
[RIUVA] K-ON!, Episode 7 (http://www.riuva.com/?p=1421)
They're rushing the pace a bit too much here. Also, I can't help but feel sad at how badly Sawa-chan sensei gets the short end of the stick; she wasn't this desperate even in the manga. 7/10.

Sawa-chan...I must marry her NAO!!!!!
How lucky... Sawa-chan is as single as Yuri-chan (from toradora), Nanako sensei (from Lucky Star), Yukari-chan and Nyamo (from Azumanga), etc...
They can make a club of "lonely single women". :heh:

So much nice and mushy sisterly love between Yui and Ui. Makes you feel warm inside as well.
Probably passed down from their lovey-dovey parents, last seen outside Berlin's Brandenburg Gate. (Just what do they do for a living anyway? )
LOL at Sawa-chan "raping" poor Mio with her cosplays again. Mio looks perfect in her kimono, good job Ritsu, for tricking her into wearing that.
Amazed at Yui's ability at not getting fat no matter how much she eats, Mugi's incredulous reaction at Yui's claim, while surprising, is understandably expected. (Both she and Mio were later lamenting at how much weight they've gained over the holidays. )
All in all, a very relaxing "transitional" episode after last week's "climax". It's near my bedtime and I can afford to half turn off my brain and not miss anything fun. (This is meant as a compliment. )
There are two sorts of shows regarding the turning off of the brain.
The first is the "relaxing" type, where one is allowed to turn off his brain due to its relaxing content.
The second would be the "retarding" type, where one's brain is forced to turn off his brain or even regresses into stupidity due to the sheer retardedness of its story. A certain ninja anime starting with the letter "N" and a certain grim-reaper anime starting with the letter "B" comes to mind.
LMAO at the Chicken costume in the preview. And it seems like it'll be a new school term as Ui is seen wearing the Sakura-kou uniform while being greeted by the K-On Maid Cafe. New school term means recruiting new band members, no?
LOL at Sawa-chan "raping" poor Mio with her cosplays again. Mio looks perfect in her kimono, good job Ritsu, for tricking her into wearing that.
That was so Haruhi though (Mikuru= Mio?)

Why Sawa sensei...why...she is completely broken and by that I mean COMPLETELY and it really doesn't do her image any good at all. At first it was funny but when they take her character to the extreme all the time, it turns into a bad thing and for me I think she has lost her charm. Tone her stupid over the top antics down a bit and hopefully she could reclaim her former glory.
But I thought that this was quite a heartwarming episode and Ui especially made it worthwhile. Mio is still hilarious when Ritsu plays with her so much and its fine when not too extreme (thankfully it was done just right this time round). A part of me just wants to give Ritsu a kunckle sandwich though
Ui reminds me ghibli's work... that face... so round and happy... just a sudden thought..
If you actually mean that, then you're talking about the past 6 episodes as well. I see no difference.
Really enjoyed this episode. Sister love is so beautiful.
I meant it was a total waste of time because they didn't do anything that related to the light music club, but if you want to count the last part where they wished for good fortune or whatever then meh.
At least in the past 6 episodes they related the stuff to the light music club (even episode three, because if Yui didn't pass her test, then no more club activities = no more K-ON! for us).
I'd call this the calm before the storm actually. The K-On group gets a holiday break to be themselves, be friends, and enjoy a few days mostly outside of music. (or like two weeks it seems).
After this...well...club activities...such as they are. Music...such as it is. Plus more Ui it looks like.

Some funny moments as well as more moe goodness to be had in this episode. The pacing was fine up until the part where they are at the shrine. That part was skimmed through quite quickly.
I'm glad I held off on my impressions till the subs came out because the first thing I noticed watching this in RAW was the odd timing of that one scene showing how Yui spent her first 3 days after New Year's compared to how it was done in the manga but thanks to what they cut out from this portion of the manga (wait why am I being thankful for such a thing? lol) I felt it was better blended in now after having read the subs :)
Some touching moments between Yui and Ui, and Sawako had some good moments as well. That creepy crawling just looked weird, and that cosply fetish of hers was there as always. I too was reminded of Haruhi during that bit where she tried to make Mio wear the santa costume; I loved the devious smile on her face when Nadoka walks in during that mishap. And then there was the part where she smacked her stomach and said "A maple leaf!" Now as a canadian the first thing that came to my mind here was our flag but red is a fairly common color among maple leafs in general. Still I thought that was rather clever of her :heh:

All of a sudden Mio becomes the dress-up doll this episode. WIN!
Then we have some lesbian incest between Yui and Ui. WIN!
Also we have Mugi in an angry expression for once. WIN!
Finally we have Mio in a winter kimono. EPIC WIN!
Starting from this episode, it seems that Mio is gradually becoming broken to the extent that she is willing to don the one-piece santa-girl outfit. Will it gradually turn into a H-anime with Mio being the uke to the various K-ON members?
Stay tuned, for episode 8!!!
Will it gradually turn into a H-anime with Mio being the uke to the various K-ON members?
No sir, you are just watching too much H-stuff :heh:
BTW... Mio is more and more like Kagamin... you will see it next week ;)
I will marry you Mio, no worries :D
Anyhow, it was an amuzing episode, but nothing to rofl about. Mio's kimino was awesome, and I wish they did a close up on Mio's santa, but oh well.
In the manga, Mugi appears with a Kimono too... and she looks great too.

Gah Mugi killed me in that Russianish winter outfit (Ah the name of that kindof hat is escaping me...).
Otherwise pretty standard episode with lots of cute and fun individual moments. ;)
Well we got to see Yui x Ui sister relationship which is actually a reverse-role considering the younger acts more like the older and matured one.

I think it's that she's become a one gag character, which is starting to seem the case for Mio as well in basically being there to be exploited at every turn, but then again I can't say I didn't expect this development.
I like how at some point during the last few episodes Ritsu and Mio seemed to have swapped character archetypes and now Mio is the butt of all jokes and Ritsu is the one doing all the ripping.
Honestly I felt the only decent parts of the episode were the bits with Yui and Ui's Christmas traditions that book end the episode. Between that is was pretty much the same old predictable gags with Mio getting fidgety over everything under the sun, Yui being vapid, Ui being the opposite to Yui in terms of adeptness at household duties and organization, Mugi being perfect at everything she tries to do, Ritsu being loud and obnoxious and Sensei doing the whole bipolar thing, and then they eat some cake. It's all just a been there done that feel that is starting to become episodic, only in this episode they throw in a Christmas theme twist to try and make it seem fresh. Kind of like how in 80's Super Robot anime there is always that one twist with a new scheme to beat the super robot, but really your just watching what amounts to 80% of the same content and ideas.
Hmmm...and I also can't say I find Yui and Ui's relationship all that incredible. I mean I've watched many episodes of the Odd Couple already after all. The fact that they saw fit to explain the whole idea behind there relationship though is what ultimately ruins the Odd Couple factors potential comedic appeal despite the been there done that feel of it. This show really desperately needs to get over it's tendency to explain the idea behind it's gag bits in the dialogue as it's just killing the humour. Reminds of a Family Guy gag about Geri fighting comedy on the facts of life. Seriously:

WOW! Thanks K-On! I totally wouldn't have gotten the gag that took up the last couple of minutes without that bit of explanatory dialogue.
This probably seems like a nitpick, but the thing is this show does it constantly. Especially in this episode. In fact not a few moments later we get this:
http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/2286/onemorefortheroad.jpg
http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/3452/applauseplease.jpg
And again in short order:
http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/1836/ikillyouritsub.jpg
Later on we have one gag that is actually kind of amusing and unexpected:
http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/3880/ritsuagain.jpg
Nope......
And what about Mugi:
http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/2305/mugitoo.jpg
..........
At least they let us kind of have the nice sentimental bit between Yui and Ui getting the presents they wanted without Ritsu having to jump "Wow isn't that amazing that you both got a Scarf and a Glove and you needed those for Winter?"
Of course this is something that a lot of 4Koma have, but that's because that's the way that format actually works. When you take an adaptation of it though that already expands upon the 4 panel style with it's animation and audio the explanation of the gag really becomes unnecessary and detrimental instead. The show can be kind of amusing when it doesn't do this, but when it does it just kills it for me. :nono:
Next episode being maid service outfits again just makes it seem like they are out of any fresh ideas for this series and are already making the move towards reusing gag sequences. Show seems to have run out of steam fast to the point where now I'm not concerned with whether 12 episodes will be enough to flesh things out, but that it's become an issue of the show dragging things out.
All I have left to say though is that I just don't get what is with this show and it's apparent reluctance to show the girls playing their instruments live. When they said talent show I at least thought they might practice and jam or something, but nope it's like they are deliberately rubbing it in now with bits like "Air Guitar" and "Air Drums". You're telling me that at Yui's own house she couldn't have just gone and grabbed her guitar to play?
Oh and the bit at the end where they pray for the music club....yeah I'd pray for it too at this point. :uhoh: I guess next time we get to see whether or not they will sort of milk Mio in a Maid outfit or if they will go all the way.

Pretty good episode. The usual Moe Mio moments. And gotta love Mugi's sunfish impression! And her yuri new year's wish too!

I couldn't agree more. I was enjoying this show but ever since they got the advisor it seems like it's going down the hill with a lot of predictable gags and too much over-explanation...
But let us just hope this is a passing fase and that we'll get some more development on the music side of things.

Don't hope too much... there is no development, this show is about cute girls doing cute things... this is not Beck.

This was a pretty slow episode. I don't know if it was just me, but for the first half I felt the desire to watch something else. The second half picked up though.
Aww, Yui and Ui are so cute as sisters!
Ui and Mugi are cute, as always. Sawa-chan's theme is annoying, though, since it felt so out of place, and I feel like they're abusing Mio's shy thing. Mio in a kimono was cute.
this was another good episode but what happened there... it seems to be Christmas so quickly
just a couple episodes ago it was mid-terms and now Christmas... ohh well, it was still well done
good episode. I guess I should stop reading the manga so it won't spoil the anime for me :P

I really dislike Christmas episodes when its not Christmas, but luckily this wasn't a heavy one, so it was good. And as everyone has thought and said.. "I'll marry you Mio!" lol.

;2397621']good episode. I guess I should stop reading the manga so it won't spoil the anime for me :P
In my case, I'm probably going to keep reading the manga. Sure there's potential to be spoiled, but it's something that I accept when I want to both read the manga and watch the show. After all, no matter which version I experience first, the other one will be spoiled. So I may as well go with the flow.
There's also probably the fact I have a strange liking for 4-Koma manga. Especially ones involving cute girls such as K-ON! Which makes it hard for me to resist the idea of reading the manga.
I want to adopt Yui & Ui. Their parents left them alone and ran to Germany? I think if this was the USA, Child Protective Services would have something to say about that. ;) But their scenes reminded me of the last Minami-Ke. Very sweet. Especially after just finishing School Days.

This was a sweet ep. the relationship of Yui and Ui runs deep. also, Sawa-chan.. wtf. haha. and Mio, so much Moe-ness this ep too. i really want to know the back story of Mugi now. hopefully they'll devote an ep to that.
and next ep, you can't have more members in k-on...
Well, a new member or two might draw some of the heat away from Mio, make the newbie the target sort of thing.

well, considering the ending only still has the four of them in it, i doubt they'll be adding members. maybe people will be like, wtf are you guys up to. i'm leaving.
Well they do spend an unnatural amount of time drinking tea and eating cake during club activites (like Yui wished for this episode).

Well, that was a pretty light episode all in all and while it had its moments, it doesn't really seem to do anything to engage the viewer beyond just purely showing them what's going on. I can deal with that once in awhile, but normally, my preference is for a show to get me involved by seriously thinking about what's happening on screen. Hidamari Sketch did a pretty good job of that with its pacing, and that's probably what I'm missing the most of from this series.

more I watch of this, more it reminds me of how much I have in common with Yui. I'm the same with not gaining weight no matter how much I eat.

Unfortunately the new member isn't like Mio, who gets edgy at all the flak thrown at her.
They went completely overboard with extreme cuteness in this episode, my cheeks hurt from smiling so much...

Meh.
I question why I still continue to watch the show at this point, it's becoming horribly mediocre and predictable, which sucks out what little charm and heart this show had to begin with.
another good episode

Happy cute little show and so much critique aimed at it. I think people should just stop watching this if they feel that negative about it. Especially with the latest episode. That was just so cute and fun. Not for you? Then don't watch. And stop questioning manhood and your purpose on Earth like Omni.

Just watched it again and there's still so much space for everyone else to grow and develop. The scenes showcasing Yui and Ui's relationship was definitely a step in the right direction and was a joy to watch. I guess all those scenes with Sawa-chan is still excusable because it's not like she's on screen all the time. I still find it sad and wasteful that we still don't get to focus as much on everyone else sans Mio. I mean, like I said, one girl does not a band make.
Still, while it seems Yui and the new girl will become the spotlight for the next coming episodes, that still leaves out poor Ritsu and Mugi.:(

The New Year scene in the manga was much funnier. It seemed as if the anime added it in just for the purpose of drawing Mio in a Kimono. Which is WIN as always; I died of moe even though I'm not a Mio fan. Sawa-chan also seems a little out of character (from the manga that is), hope it gets better next episode.
Overall, average episode peppered with moments of WIN. I guess Kyoani has developed some sort of niche for this kind of anime. In response to annoyance about the seemingly recurring plot devices (next episode's maid-cafe in particular), Kyoani can't change the plot lines from the original 4koma so blame the repetition on the manga. Though it is Kyoani's job to depict it so that it doesn't feel recurring.
Personally, I also don't see what's wrong with the lolis' feet. Aren't they supposed to look small and weak in the anime world? I find them cute; it's like they could topple and fall anytime.

i guess the only thing that makes me wonder is Yui & Ui's typical "censor faced" parents cliche, who magically leaves their kids alone at home for an unkown clear goddamn reason, without depending on any close relatives/whatsoever to look after them while they are away. ~nyoron~ :heh:
It's something mentioned in the Clannad After Story discussions, it's standard practice to leave even young children alone for some time in Japan. If they can cook, it wouldn't be suprising to see the parents leave their kids at home alone while they go on a trip.

Since Ui tuned out to be opposite of her sister, contrary to expectations, Ritsu's imagination has made Yui's parents to be the happy-go-lucky ones. But since the parents would be unlikely to appear in the show, we can't confirm this. Although I think it's possible that the personality of one parent is like Yui and the other is like Ui, where else could they be influenced to turn up like that?
Also sisterly love is awww.

Well let's see we've already got the bossy type, the scaredy cat who used to be kuudere, the klutz and the rich girl, what archetypes are left to add to this mix?

Before Munto I would have replied to this with something like "sure they could if they just improvise", but now I'm pretty sure this Maid Cafe idea will be better then whatever they might come up on their own without a source to go on. If anything it would probably feel even more recurring with cyclical dialogue that goes nowhere in the end......wait.......

I found this ep. a bit too cutesy, the sisterly stuff was too much. Also I thought there would be more development of Ui's character, she was on-screen for most of the ep. but by the end I didn't feel we really knew any more about her than was evident when she appeared back in ep.2.
Yui in a mini-Santa outfit was a high point though...

The episode was good and I will not resume since there is not much to resume but I will give out the strong points!
What I liked:
-It was great at the beginning to see Yui and Ui! So cute when they were young sure makes the MOE more MOE!
-Ui grabbing Yui's foot when she was about to fall but never does after putting the star was great because Yui is usually clumsy but she did not screw up the tree. She was worried about whether she was good enough for Santa to come.
-It was cute once again when Yui and Ui went outside since Yui wanted to show her the snow but the snow was not real instead it was cotton balls! Well sure worked out somehow.
-We are further shown of the relation between Yui and Ui. Yui seeing that her sister is cold warps her with half of her scarf. It is a good sign of family caring for each other considering there are many families that are not so in Japan.
-Ui noticing that Yui's hand was cold also warps around her hands around since Yui is clumsy she most likely forgot a glove. Yet another sign that Ui shows mutual family caring.
-Well it was nice to see the group having a talk in their club about Christmas some parts that were good in there were those of Ritsu showing those pics of Mio she took during the trip in episode 4 at Kotobuki's cottage.
-Another one was Mio's gift she got from Ritsu during one a Christmas when she was younger. OF ALL THINGS A JACK IN BOX! LOL!
-Pretty cool of Yui to ask Nodoka to come with them to buy the presents to be exchanged and participate with them since Nodoka said right away OK!
-Back at Ui's place it was too funny when Yui said GATAN DES with salute! Now that was LOL!
-Also LOL was how Yui wanted to help but Ui remarked she would only be too clumsy for it.
-Yui sure has some weird ideas about gift picking!
-SO MUCH LOL! During Ritsu/Mio gift picking scene. Because Ritsu for one scares the living crap of Mio with that Halloween mask of horror and we all know how scared and MOE Mio gets with this stuff.
-The other gag around the same part would be the JACK IN THE BOX! Get this though, it was a horror one because the JACK was a skeleton. Mio of course freaked out!
-The third gag in this same part made me less LOL but it was original....A BLURAY HORROR MOVIE! I also suspect a strategy of making Blurays more popular like that. Thing was done a lot with pizza hut also so no surprise at something like that.
-The part after that when everyone got three raffles tickets each for a total of 15! LOL @ the fact all got tissues except Kotobuki who got a better prize as a game board!
-What a waste! Yui used one of those party cones just to see what it does so it was a LOL since once you use it, you cannot use it again. That is why WHAT A WASTE! I would use when all were coming at the door! :th_086_64color:
-I did like how it become quite clear of why Ui did not want Yui to cook nor help her. SHE IS COOKS AMONG COOKS! She does not really need anyone to help her with that.
-Yui being tangled in the Christmas decorations was a good LOL!
-THE FOOD! THE FOOD! Oh man it looked so delicious I wanted some also! :lovelove:
-Sawako sensei sure had her LOL time in this one. Since the whole group was surprised at her sudden appearance they all though that she was some kind of ninja! LOL! Especially at the part of how all though she got in.
-Sawako sensei playing and deforming the smile of Yui! LOL!
-Sawako wanting to have someone wearing a Santa outfit!
-MOE MOE MOE Yui for wearing the Santa outfit but LOL at sensei not agreeing it looks on her!
-LOL at Nodoka getting in and noticing Sawako sensei changing Mio into the Santa outfit since she though it would look best on her! I SWEAR Nodoka was thinking that Sawako was raping Mio in a yuri way since Mio had her pants off so I think only panties were visible at this point.
-DO FEEL BAD FOR MIO FEELING EMBARRASSED! She looked miserable.
-LOL @ Sawako taking the initiative of the gift exchange! It was great regardless!
-LOL @ Sawako so much when she opened her present! Because it was what Mio was supposed to get. A JACK IN A BOX! Then BOOING BOOM ON HER FORE HEAD! HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHA! LOL!
-WOW Kotobuki got casanetes, those things you shake, look at pic at bottom!
-WOW! Nodoka got cookies! So nice! Bon appetit!
-COOL! Mio got some horror comic! :dies2: Like her! She will never read it! She will store it in her room somewhere deep. I would keep it and LOL about it when older with a family!
-Seems Ritsu got a present from Nodoka as she is the one who chose it for her. I am not sure but is it a lantern?
-BEST WAS YUI/UI! Ui got a scarf so it is exactly what she needed! Yui got winter gloves, also something she needed since at this point all can suppose due to her clumsy ways she lost the other glove and cannot find it.
-LOVED UI's marionette show with Satan Claus and Rudolf the red nose! A classic and it's good Japanese are aware of it!
-OH YES! OH YES! MIO IN SANTA CLAUS OUTFIT! Yessssssssss! MOE MOE MOE MIO! MOE!
-Kotobuki imitating who knows what at this point was LOL! Seriously I LOL hard!
-WTF was up Sawako sensei showing that a slap at her stomach would leave a mark!? O_O
-Pretty to see snow falling when all left the house since the party was over.
-LOL at the game board being left there. I though Kotobuki would take it but guess not.
-LOL @ Yui being lazy girl after Christmas! She was doing nothing being hidden under the warm kotatsu (table that is warmed up). LOL @ Ui having to feed her like some injured patient!
-MOE MOE MOE MIO! She looked best in her outfit! Some nice fancy kimono!
-Second MOE one was Kotobuki in her white coat.
-LOL @ Sawako for being jealous of a couple when she failed in life at having a guy. Really Japan too much pressure on the girls to do things!
-LOL @ Yui getting hit by Ritsu for saying something stupid during praying and New Year wishing!
What I did not like:
-I know and am aware of the cute scene with Yui and her sister going to sleep together but I DO NOT LIKE IT! It was cute, yes, but it suggests among other things incest. There is a certain age where you should not sleep with family members. That age should be around 8 years old. That time they are way too old for this. There are way better ways of showing care.
The beginning was so MOE! Yui and Ui when they were kids!

OUCH to Yui for saying something stupid since she got hit by Ritsu! Poor her!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After the subs thoughts.
-I completely missed the point that Kotobuki's imitation was that of a star fight but then again who would know.
-Mio's rambling on no one marrying her is BS but a true fact of Japanese woman being plagued if they have their body exposed to others no matter who it is.
-Ritsu marrying Ui is a creepy though. In Japan it is sometimes a problem that leads woman to suicide such as twins loving themselves.
-Tsumugi exchanging the Hawaii trip was stupid but if it was only for one person then I understand but then again the board game must hve tempted her more since money for her should not be a problem.
-So the parents of Yui did go towards Germany but the lovey-dovey....why not? They are married but once again Tsumugi blushing does show other things.
-Seems the next episode will have more members. Also it seems that the next concert will have more songs as in 4.
-Sawako's imitation was supposed to be a maple leaf but FAILED! That was not even close.
-Sawako does lie about having a boyfriend. Too easy to see but I had to confirm with subs other than the obvious jealousy at the end with temple visit.
-Wow Ristsu's reason to hit Yui was because she wanted cakes instead of wishing for the club.
-Yui's not gaining fat is due to a high metabolism and is a true fact. The problem is a lot of people are jealous of it.

Heh.... K-ON is at its best with episodes like this. Good work, good work there.
Uhh... Not to be rude... But... No.
Well it seems that this episode broke the chain in ratings being the same between Kaoshin and I... (Though a 5 isn't much better than a 4 anyways). Only reason I gave it a 5 is because there at least was the feeling of character development between the sisters.
Nonetheless this series continues to be poor. This episode was just filled with the exploitation of the character's extremes and over rehashed gags that weren't even really funny in the first place. Yeah, KyoAni can go cater to the Otakus all they want. It's obvious that this adaption has less to do with art than it does being simply a cash cow that gets young males to drool over it.
This is frankly a terrible show. Sorry, but it's animes like these that give anime a social stigma in the public at times. Flame on. :eyebrow:

Not so much as an exploitation but more like a (currently anyway) failure to capitalize what was (and still is) a very strong and interesting premise. We all like comedy and all, but even then comedy has meaning to them. Lucky Star and maybe even Asumanga managed to present current events in the otherwise dull and drag lives of typical high schoolers in a funnier and more relatable like through their comedy.
Other than that, the comedic interplay between Yui and Ui I found to be a very interesting and enjoyable vehicle to present the complete difference in their personalities. Like I said, comedy doesn't need to be exploitative, they did it hilariously well with Yui and Ui.
In contrast yeah, Mio's getting milked for all the moe she's got. At the very least she isn't going as overboard as she used to in the previous works, but it's going to give my diabetes one of these days.
Well...there is the serious type I suppose. A girl that wants to play music, which everyone else seems to not do since they are eating cake and drinking tea? Mio is almost like that, but she wanted to be in a different club originally, and follows the call to eat cake...plus she's used at the moe generator via bullying while Yui and Ui go for the cute scale.
Needs more "MugVision". It would be like what Nagisa and Ryou had when Nagisa was "confessing".

I think Sawako has become to metalheads and rock fans in general what our dear Mio is to moe-fanatics. Anyone agree? XD
I give this episode a 7. Not really great by any means, but a whole assload of cuteness is plenty of entertainment for me. Now that I know they are dedicated to doing stuff with the band (as shown in episode 5 and 6) I am comfortable having these filler episodes.
I give it an 8. It wasn't the best, but it definitely wasn't bad. That and I'm always kinda partial to character developing episodes like such :heh:.

Heck... for the 1st time i really understand the term "steal the show" physically. I could not remember a thing about EP 7 after watching it, other than Mio's red kimono. Reading this thread was like "Ah yeah, this bit was in the episode as well."
Yui and Ui were cute. They resemble Tenma&Yakumo a lots; but they are much closer to each other. Then no matter where you looks, Yui is clearly show off her "clumsy onee-san" character. The thought of Ui can be an older sister would not even imaginable.
Mugi's ojousama power were like ultimate (I loves how she is so casual at everything also). There you have the four girls trying to carry a bunch of left-over tissues boxes home. When their best friend just next-by had just thrown away a Hawaii trip worth several thousands $ for a game box. How ironic......
Ritsu. Your propose have been taken into account. Yui will not mind entrust her sister to her soulmate.
Mio? I have to admit that when they poke her shyness the 1st time, it was all fun. They poked several times, the effect start to wear off. They poke it several more times with a different approach, suddenly it became AWESOME. Great fan-services you have there KA. I do have to drop my hat for you guys. Cause Mio once again passed my image threshold of "how moe a character could become". Her moment of getting stripped (Nodoka's "sorry, wrong house" was pure win btw) and Santa's one piece were great fan-services. It threw a year worth of pantsu i have seen straight down into the toilet. Yeah, that's how well a fan service should be

Gone by the wayside. Too many people were expecting BECK. Don't know why since this wasn't looking like BECK from the PV. :heh:
Loved the Xmas episode but it's hard to be in a Christmassy mood when it's May.
The sisterly love shown here was wonderful. I think anyone who sees incest is reaching.
The girls just wanna have fun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVwFeQpy_Us) which is suppose to be the reason to join a club. If they were really serious, they would be doing other things like enrolling in a music school, doing live concerts like BECK was doing.

In my case, when I learned that the source material for K-On is a 4-koma, I already expected minimal character and story development and as mentioned before, "cute girls doing cute things". So whenever I watch an episode, I turn off the part of my brain that looks for those things and simply watched it for what it is. And I found the series to be very enjoyable.
Now if the source HAS a serious storyline with good character development, I would rage at how things are progressing right now.
Back on topic:
I found the episode to be fun and somehow reminded me of how Christmas is in my country. Sawako really made their party memorable. Mio's moeness has exceeded my expectations yet again, Mugi vision is a wonderful gift and Ritsu is living up to her character as always. Though I must say that it was kind of expected that Yui is that kind of an older sister but Ui is just adorable (I want a sister like her too :D).

Wow, K-On is serious business. :twitch: What happened to watching anime to be entertained?
Well that's just it, for me I found this episode less entertaining then some of the earlier one's have been. My big gripe after all was it's tendency to blow almost every gag in the episode with an eyeroll inducing explanation from one of the girls. Also there are countless Christmas episodes in anime and usually I find them among the weaker and more bland themed ones where the events portrayed end up boring me. This was one of those times. Not being one to go gaga over something like Mio existing in an episode or the girls doing the same ol' same ol' didn't help my reaction to this episode.

As Kaoshin said... This episode just wasn't entertaining. Cute girls doing cute things is one thing, but when I feel like I'm watching the same episode over and over and over and over and over and over........... AGAIN...... It gets frustrating.
I came into this show expecting to see a band of clumsy girls form a band in a comedic way, but also thought that it would be heart warming in the end. It's failed in all those aspects.

Forget 'serious', it's just not very entertaining.
The concert scene in the previous episode?
That shows potential, and willingness to go in a different direction then most other shows.
Until they do a boring ass Christmas episode like most other shows.
I don't want character development because this show can't handle it, just give me more shit like the concert episode and 95% less Mio.
Which is of course never going to happen.
Thanks Japan.
Maybe this is the time to accept that most possibly this show wasn't what you were expecting and call it quits?
Sometimes it is better to admit defeat and move on. Reckoner is obviously not the target audience of this title.

Of course!... different people can be more or less entertained by a show, that's ok, but, that's way too diferent than to expect something "original" when we're talking about Kyo-Ano recycling over and over the same jokes.
Some people can laugh, and some people don't... so, if i would be one of the last, i would not watch K-On, as simple as that... Believe me, go to the manga.. read it... and you will have NO reason to keep watching this if you are not entertained now.
But it isnt neccesary to argue about a show that a lot of people actually love it!

It isn't about KyoAni jokes. The anime is practically a verbatim copy of the source materia (though it'd seem that the parts that the naysayers seem to enjoy the most are the kyoani originals :heh:). If anything, blame the manga. And if you want to blame the manga, use the manga thread ;p

Oh I hold no grudge against anyone else enjoying the show, that's the last thing I would do.
My hate is always aimed at the characters in the show or the people who made it, never at the audience who wishes to partake of it.
Mio is boring and attractive in any form.
Yui needs to suck on the business end of a sawed off shotgun.

For you guys that are complaining about the repetition of the gags and the one dimensions of the character personalities, then I really don't see why you continue to watch the show when you know full well it's not something for you and it really turn into what you want it to be like. Anyways, Yui and Ui should never be anywhere near each other, because my heart can't take all the heartwarming sisterly love that they both possess.
Solid episode, not the best Christmas episode I've ever seen though. Yui's Santa costume was not as skanky as it was in the manga, so that was disappointing, and the party was pretty amusing overall.

It's fine to discuss certain points of an episode / show (ie: the fact that Mio is quickly turning into the 'moe slut' of the show or how the concert last episode was handled, and so on) but there's no need to be 'baffled' by what we do or do not decide to watch. Sadly, it would seem that the only way one can become a "fan" of a show is if one can easily and conveniently lie to yourself and ignore any faults a program may possess for the sole reason that fandom requires blind admiration. Apparently being able to still appreciate and enjoy something while holding on to your reservations, expectations and disappointments is blasphemy.

Azumanga Daioh had 3 years of similar material timeline wise in the anime. Strawberry Marshmallow does similar material too. It's not like this is a new concept.
The difference is that Azumanga had an incredible clarity which K-On lacks. Every character, every school event, was delineated so precisely that it leapt out of the screen at you. If you compare the Xmas/New Year episodes of the two shows, they are, well, incomparable. Azumanga got enormous mileage out of stuff like new year (also cultural festivals, etc.) whereas I feel K-On lets them slip through its fingers.

Figured that out like hours ago, I wish someone would just sell me one.
Well and K-On is not focusing on the school events and other traditional activities unless it directly involves them having to play.
Also the type of cast. While there are three secondary characters at present, and four mains, the interactions of the groups are not like Azumanga because pretty much that group was all based on the girls in one class. Most of them were not even in a club.
Also Yui is not quite a replacement for "Osaka"....there is no replacement for that sort of thinking.
But it is not meant to be like Azumanga, because the "plot", such as it is, revolves around their music club rather than their lives in class. Thus they can't do half of those other normal activites as a focus, because it has little to do with them as a club.
Mio is in the half Sakaki/half Yomi role.
Riitsu is in the Tomo role to Mio's Yomi. She's just slightly more intelligent than Tomo, and doesn't spend all her energy trying to piss people off.
Yui is in an "Osaka" like role, but also in some respects she's the Chiyo-chan role, as she's the one we tend to see things through.
Mugi's role doesn't fit any of the types specifically. She's got the rich part that Chiyo-chan had, and she seems to have Koari's yuri vision. But outside that she's not quite like any Azumanga character.
Sawako is in several respects like the Azumanga teachers Yukari and Nyamo mixed a bit.
The remainder don't really fit any Azumanga types. So it is best to just think of K-On as K-On.

Well and K-On is not focusing on the school events and other traditional activities unless it directly involves them having to play.

I always had the implication that it was a musical-centered show that took place in a high-school area. (After all, music is considered the universal language). But then again, the high-school setting scenario with these cute girls is also provided for a fan service base.
someone needs to calibrate his/her POV to appreciate this anime ^^
When you see a band onstage, as a fan or even casual follower, you tend to build up a persona for the members of that band in your mind. The smart one, the sexy one, the one that writes the songs, the one that's goofy or a cut-up... Take any band out there and there are a whole host of assumptions as to who they are and what they are like. And then there is the persona that the music company is telling you those band members have, and the persona that the PR person says that band member has....
If the band started in your school as a garage band or a club group, as a member of their class, you have a different idea of who those band members are... All these perspectives and yet, none of them may be true. None of them are based in facts, but perhaps instead in their physical appearance onstage or the lyrics of their songs.
To me, K-on is attempting to show us who these band members really are. Their foibles, their peccadillos, their drivers... and how as a band, they form into a kind of family unit. And how that family functions. All that matters is how they behave and who they are within the context of being in the band. All else: classes, parents, outside friends, (save the few who have dealings with the band) seasons, holidays and yes, even the events they attend to play are all fluff... outside distractions which draw you OUTSIDE of the family circle of what happens to create a band and who are the members within the context of that close knit group. To that end, I think K-on is doing a decent and fine job of showing me how this group of girls came together, learned to rely on each other and treated each other as a band when NOT performing. In other words, this is a story about who the members of a band really are when they are JUST themselves.
Expecting this to be about the music, or the performances, or the school lives and loves or anything else that so many other shows are is to miss the point. When you look for those things you miss what is right in front of you. A story of a journey and getting to know the real people who are on that journey. Once we get to their goal, the people we recognize them as, genuinely, will be different from who their audience thinks they are. Its "Behind the Music" as it happens. A real fun concept for a show.
I'm enjoying it because I see it for what it is. A slice of life comedy with no higher aspirations that to just show how extraordinary girls are really not anything special at all... just girls in an extraordinary setting. I like it! :)

You're telling me that I'm in the wrong to expect a show about girls who create a band, are part of the 'light music club', and even go 'training' to practice for their first performance, to actually have music of some sort?
Their 'lives' are incredibly dull, cliche, overdone, and unoriginal.
The MUSIC is the only part of this show that's actually creative and brimming with potential, the concert is irrefutable proof of that. Hell, the manner in which the show even handled the concert is further proof of originality. Everyone in this subforum was expecting some sort of performance, and instead we got an unexpected mininature music video. That's good! It's different! Let's go with that!
Naaah, let's go down the checklist and mark off what other shows have done and go with that. I mean for fuck sake they couldn't just end the concert normally, they had to have the girl fall on her ass for the prerequisite panty gag.
There's more fanart of Mio in a maid's outfit that was on screen for 4 seconds then is of any of them playing any bloody instruments.

OH OH OH, I get it now...
Let's have every episode be all about music and the light music club band playing their songs, and wait for people to then complain about the repetitiveness about being a one-tracked series that's just about music without the practical dynamics of anything else; Sacrifice character development to drive this concept home...
Let's even follow through that with the real life experience: Go out and buy a guitar, lock yourself in your room for hours on end playing it, don't have any outside social contact or engage in non-guitar-essential activities, short of being with your band for practice or a gig...See how much your life will tend to SUCK after you do that for a couple days on end...
Let's all form a band, have fun playing together, and just SHOOT OURSELVES IN THE FOOT whenever we decide to have some outside fun when we're not together as a band...
Or if we don't feel like doing that, let's pop in a documentary on a band and watch that; Maybe something like Metallica's "Cliff 'Em All", and be all ecstatic during the concert performances and then THROW SHITFITS whenever they show Metallica doing something not related to a concert, such as drinking beer, bullshitting, and having non-musical fun...
Holy Hell! K-On! is something I would not have otherwise watched but I still do anyway because it's the musical aspect that has drawn me into it...While it's not all music as I thought it would be, I would find it pretty repetitive if it were just music, actually taking the moment to enjoy in the mindless banter of non-music entertainment, and yet, it still has music as a recurring theme...Who the fuck said this show was going to be nothing but music anyway? There are too many detractors and not enough watchers; There is nothing wrong with opinions, as everyone's entitled to hold one, but it probably becomes illogical when you can spot every flaw in the show and seemingly have not one thing positive to say about anything...:eyespin::rolleyes::eyespin::rolleyes:
ANYWAY...
I actually kind of enjoyed this episode for it's light-heartedness...If it weren't for Ui, I probably wouldn't even feel sorry for Yui...As a matter of fact, I'm really liking Ui as a better character than Yui now... :p She acts like the older sister even though she's the younger sister; It must be tough going through the day-in/day-out as Ui living with Yui...
I still don't know what to think of Tsumugi...Does she rent her house out for parties, or what? Does she really have that much money and property to throw around? Probably; If she turns down a trip to Hawaii for a board game...She could probably take the entire band to Hawaii at her own expense anyway...And it's almost sad that she's the only one having fun during Sawako's screwed-up process of gift exchange... :p
Speaking of Sawako...I don't know what to think of her anymore...Not only does she manage to forcefully wedge herself into the middle of a party without regard to the party mood, or rape Mio of her clothes as if it were a normal daily action as putting underwear on, but what the hell was with that "maple leaf" stunt? I almost died on the inside from that... >_<
And Mio had two keypoints that struck with me; She retaliated with force when Ritsu tried to push her wits with the scary-themed gifts, and she looked criminal with the New Year's kimono get-up and ponytail...How many alternative hairstyles does Mio look good in? All of them, that's how many... :D
Next week looks like the light music club is trying to make way for new club recruits...Even though I already read the manga, I'd like to see how Kyo-Ani manages to display the embarrassing outward example the band puts out for the visitors...

I can only question, not disagree, with why he keeps watching when he could spend that time watching something he actually enjoys. Apparently he's a very masochistic individual.
Maybe I'm just trying to hard to throw my personality and beliefs onto everyone else here, and I'm the real bad guy.
While I do admit I have masochistic tendencies (this applies to my hobbies in a different way then what most would imagine though....or perhaps not if they know about.....that fetish :uhoh: ), as I stated before, I'm watching K-On and a few other series to get a mix of different types of shows this season. It can't all just be mecha, sci-fi and shows with social commentary, mystery and politicking between characters and factions. Sometimes I just need something I can watch that I look at as a little less high maintenance.
And to address your ponderings, I am of course watching series that I typically enjoy this season and juggling my time between them and shows like K-On. And despite what I felt was a poor showing for K-On this week I still can't say I have any desire or reason to drop it yet. After all there's always at least one episode of any given show where even I am typically posting rave reactions and ratings for almost every other episode, that one episode just will end up not sitting well with me for some reason(s). Yes even the likes of Gundam, Geass and Macross F, which I am usually seen as being strictly in the corner of had their episodes that I would look upon even less favourably then this one.
Just for the record my criteria for even considering dropping a show beyond the halfway point is something like 3 episodes in a row that I would score below a 6 numerically.

This should be a major clue to what facet of the show appeals more to most of the audience.
There's a touch of music and playing instruments here and there (if it serves the context for humor and moe) but it's always been more about the "mundane interactions" between 4 high school girls.
You can critique a show for not going the way you expected it to be but it's rather far-fatched to expect this proportion to change in the remaining episodes.

No of course a show cannot just focus on what you pointed out. I never expected that. However, I did think music would overall have a strong influence on the show's premise and it is clearly lacking in that regard.

Supposedly the cast of K-On is based on the band "P-Model". Though this bands members were male and active from the late 1970s to 1999, the girls family names and corrisponding instraments are from this band.

In other words, what we have here is a classic case where the main purpose of the subject is to bring the characters together. In this case, the light music club is what allows Ritsu and Mio to get together with Tsumugi and eventually Yui as well.
I do feel the show has definitely had some focus on music. It's just the focus may not be as heavy as some want it to be. Mainly because while the music is part of the story, it was as made clear by now never meant to be the entire story.
In any case, I have to wonder if maybe rather think of this as a "music" based anime that it might be better to consider it a "club" based on anime instead. By that I mean the following.
Rather than constantly go "How much focus on music will the next episode have?", we should instead be thinking "How will the members of the club interact with each other next time?"
In the long run the thing that matters most for me is how enjoyable a series is. K-ON! so far in both anime and manga form has been enjoyable to me. It's currently one of my favorites of the Spring Series. Although I still enjoy other Spring series as well. So it's not like K-ON! is the only thing I like.

Nononono, I completely understand...
7 episodes currently aired, 3 episodes currently with music/instruments as the main episodic subject, the rest are just a recurring minor theme, 13 episodes confirmed so far...
I understand this as jumping the gun; You're getting ahead of yourself and there isn't even a confirmed end to the series since the manga is still ongoing, and anyone that's read the manga knows that with the introduction of a new character, music becomes more prominent and less recurring...I consider "clearly lacking" as a generalization made out of context on a still-airing series because that's a bit of an absolute opinion...It may not have a strong influence, but having an influence is far short of having little influence or no influence...And even at that, you're judging this show out of context without letting it air towards the end and that's letting you make generalizations...Out of 13 confirmed episodes, there are still 6 episodes left that could possibly destroy any conceived doubts you have on the series; Why not wait until then? Of if you've seemingly given up hope, why not just drop out now and miss out? What is wrong even if it doesn't present itself in the way you thought it would? Does it make you bored?
I also understand the concept of expectations, but I quite frankly think you're holding them too high...I was holding them pretty high at first, as a musician myself, but despite the show's short-comings in that regard, I've learned to just take it in as general entertainment anyway, especially since a genre of anime that even remotely takes music as a theme is far from a niche...Could it be better? Sure, I don't think anyone can argue against that, since better is obviously better...But sometimes it's better to just take it as it comes...

I don't think people want sole focus on music, but focus on character interaction that has something to do with the music. The stuff where Mio is presenting the lyrics to the other club members, the moment in episode 7 where everyone was playing "air" instruments. These are some of the highlights of the show, because as I said before, they are interactions using music as a basis.
At least that's what I want. I guess I can't really speak for everyone, but I think if there was more of that, the show would be considered "better" by most.

If i remember correctly Macross was a romance show named after a mecha. Seriously mechas played a low role and i have sorta dropped it for that.
How many songs and such can you expect from an anime based off a manga? Its not like they can work in music too often to drawings. I give up. Some people are too blinded by popular opinion to give things a chance.

It certainly makes more sense to think of it as being about a club than a band. I don't get any sense of them as a band at all, there is simply no musical chemistry going on between them. (I think this is where the disapppointment about the music video comes in - we needed to see how they reacted to one another as they played, how they managed to integrate their individual performances to make a single piece of music)
But if you view it from the perspective of a group of girls in what is basically a tea & cakes club there is a certain amount of chemistry and even a feeling of their respective roles.
If i remember correctly Macross was a romance show named after a mecha. Seriously mechas played a low role and i have sorta dropped it for that.
What Macross did you watch? Even Macross 7 had its fair share of mecha and mecha-related plots...

just curious, .. how do you define musical chemistry?
vedicardi
2009-05-19, 20:27
It's not exactly definable if you ask me. It's just when the right people get together and all know exactly what they want to do. You could say that the Guns N Roses line up from Appetite had great chemistry, or the original Van Halen line up.
In my opinion.

I can very much take a hint; it's not going to result in me dropping the series though. And I will critique it based on the premise that was presented to us in the first episode and previews into the show that I was able to see before it aired. So far, it has completely veered off course from those expectations that KyoAni created themselves.
Indeed, I'd cookie you if I could, but I guess I'll wait till next time.
Well I am going to wait till the end of this series to pass final judgment. My views are based on what has been presented so far and sorry if that was not clear. If they manage to surprise me in the upcoming episodes, great.
I guess it is debatable though whether or not the music has any real influence at all, because I guess these girls would not have been together in the first place if it were not for the band. However, it is my opinion that the influence is very weak since it has served very little to the show in general beyond the first episode, the practice episode for the concert, and the concert episode itself.
Now onto my expectations... Well lowering my expectations is surely one thing I have lowered beyond any logical sense at this point. Even worst is that the show is still managing to disappoint me with exceedingly low expectations. I know the approach of "take it as it goes" and I'm just not that type of person unfortunately. Unlike something I'd watch on TV randomly, I actually put some effort into learning about and picking it up, and therefore expectations are set automatically.

I can very much take a hint; it's not going to result in me dropping the series though. And I will critique it based on the premise that was presented to us in the first episode and previews into the show that I was able to see before it aired. So far, it has completely veered off course from those expectations that KyoAni created themselves.
In other words, you've started with the expectation that K-ON is going to be BECK Seitenkan, and critiquing it based off that expectation even when it has proven an unreasonably rigid one by the 2nd, or even the 3rd episode. Noted.

I refuse to look at the source material as that would spoil the story. Sorry, but no. I'm mainly an anime fan, don't read too much manga because I enjoy the animated medium much more.
The first episode actually showed to me that this series could be something. So did the synopsis and the overwhleming praise of the first episode. I liked the first episode in fact and when it was time to watch episode 2 I was actually mildy excited. Episode 2 was OK. Episode 3 was the start of a bad run of episodes. I didn't just look at this anime and say, " Hey it's a music anime so that must mean it is going to be like XYZ."

I think the basic question some like me and Reckoner are wondering is why call the show K-On if it's not going to be that big of a focus? It's like having a Gundam show and only having Gundam's every 5 or so episodes or naming a game KISS: Psycho Circus and having there be almost no KISS......wait that last one actually happened. :uhoh:
The K-On in the title can equally refer to the members of the club :). We just had 7 full episodes all about them. (Only 2 named characters not belonging to the club). Everything they do as a group falls within the title's scope whether it be music or eating cake.
Edit:
Fanart probably says more about the audience than it does the show, though...
Yeah, my point was that the audience/crowd that makes the fanart is at peace with the proportion of moe:music

Oh there will be lots of songs for K-ON I'm sure and have no doubt, it's just a matter of whether they make it into the show or onto set of character singles that is the question.
This is about the gist of what each K-On thread ends up as:

This webcomic slays me every time I come across it, not because it's actually funny or clever or anything, but because the guy is clearly always using it to vent (a constant with WAH) about something and disguising it as creative art. And then he always does the thing at the bottom which I criticized K-ON for where he explains the whole point of the comic and the gripe that inspired it, thus rendering the point of doing it in a webcomic useless. Kills me I swear. :D :heh:

Well, I'm a manga reader and I haven't sat through a single episode entirely. Have heard the full OP and ED, though.
While I understand the "Mio = moe whore" sentiments, I never do get that feeling from reading the manga. And since it's Mio that's leading the girls in the ED, I can't bring myself to see her as moe. Her singing voice kicks ass.

She's the Butt Monkey/Chew Toy of the band. Sawako dresses her like a doll, and she is quite shy by nature (read: can't say no and mean it). Apparently, those turn a lot of people on.

Aren't they supposed to be adding a new character next week though? That's not to say they won't just end up falling upon a single basic routine for her (yes I say her even though I don't know who it is because come on....), but it might at least be a brief jolt for the shows overall act.

So, let me get this straight. You saw the first two episodes of "cute girls doing cute things" that simply revolved around a high school light music club (where the organization of said club is dismal even by high school standards, for that matter), concluded that the dominant theme of this series is "srsfknbsns musicmaking" simply because it revolves around said club, and proceed to deduce that 5 more episodes of "cute girls doing cute things" is veering off course from what you believed was the main theme of "srsfknbsns musicmaking"....?

Sigh. I guess I'm going right back where I started, but why not? First I'll quote a post a couple pages back that someone else made as I thought he illustrated quite well what I was looking for in this show.
I don't think people want sole focus on music, but focus on character interaction that has something to do with the music. The stuff where Mio is presenting the lyrics to the other club members, the moment in episode 7 where everyone was playing "air" instruments. At least that's what I want. I guess I can't really speak for everyone, but I think if there was more of that, the show would be considered "better" by most.
Cute girls doing cute things is not out of sorts with what I was looking at. When I read the synopsis of K-ON! I thought I was going to see a group of girls clumsily form a band in a comedic way, but in the end it would come off as heart warming in their attempts to succeed. Perhaps there would even be a little drama as bands are almost always with drama... I also thought I'd hear some nice music (However one must consider the genre of music which was fairly obvious to me) I don't think this is something unreasonable to expect.
First episode... We get to see the four band members slowly come together, two of them have been friends since young and apparently had a dream to form a band ever since seeing a concert. Another one thought it would be a fun experience. The last was just you're typical ditz girl who wanderered into a situation that she didn't fully comprehend. We get to see a little peformance at the end and then we find out that this ditz girl cannot play any instruments, let alone a guitar! Ah, looks like all the ingredients are there to meet what I was attempting to see here! Oh, and I enjoyed the OP and ED that showed much promise to the show's future and the band's future.
Second episode... The four girls who formed a band come to realize that Yui needs to buy a guitar. Apparently Yui cannot afford one, especially not the one that she set her eyes on. Looks like the friends are going to have to bail her out. They all get together to do clumsily get jobs and pull together their efforts in order to buy Yui a guitar. In the end we realize that we have a little rich princess who owns the guitar store and bails Yui out of a little pinch by lowering down the price of such a guitar. A group of girls clumsily forming a band. Check. A little nice comedy to lighten up the mood in my day? Check. Hey the story is set up now, time to look foward to next week...
And after that you can pretty much just go to the previous episode threads or look at my past posts to see my position on this show developed over the last 4 episodes or so.

Trying to mathematically quantity something like that is silly. You missed the entire point of the post and frankly I've grown tired of responding tonight.
This will be the last things I will say... I do not wish to see the animation of moe blobs for 20 minutes every week. Where is the even basic character development? The group bonding? Any drama? Plot build up? The trials of completing such a task? Much of what I have seen in the past episodes has been superflurous activities that didn't progress the series very much at all, and yet we get to see the band magically become good by the concert episode by doing nothing forcing us to suspend our belief even though they went through the trouble of illustrating the point in the beginning that Yui doesn't know how to play guitar and has trouble focusing....
And likewise, I'm too lazy myself to go back to my old posts.
The seeming self imposed aggravation may be blocking one's senses when it comes to seeing character development, group bonding, and even increase in musical skills. There is not very much of this per episode, but there is some in each one. Mostly it is group bonding and minor character development with some indication that Yui is getting better with the guitar by practising at home. The other three seem to know their instruments already and just need serious polish on group play and the ability to write music that they play.
As for them being good at the concert, that is a little open to interpretation. The song wasn't all that good, and their ending was sloppy. It was what it was...a first serious attempt. Also they've had something like six months to get that far (If the festival was in November).
One would assume that an additional member will add drama (in one form or another) since you now have an outsider joining a core group. Well will see, either this week or next what comes of this.

Better. Much more concise. I could start pointing out the answers to your questions, but since you've made the mistake of allowing me to get on your nerves, I think it's best you sleep it off for today. You'll probably feel better off next time, and I've got other things to do anyway. ;)
Do we yet know the episode count for this series. I haven't been keeping track. If it is a two cour series, then viewers like Reckoner who was attracted to the show after the first two episode, may see some fruition to their expectation about the type of drama the first two episodes hint at. Of course, I don't know how the manga pans out in regards to the flow of the story, or the sort of focus about the band and its eventual success.
Anyway, since the viewers like Reckoner who aren't satisfied by how the show is going about it is in the minority, I suppose the stories' appeal is there as long as we can accept the notion, it's not for everyone.
Peace be with us all!

Thanks Midnight. I suppose the show's going to stay short and sweet for the maximum impact over its fans.
And it should follow the fine tradition of Lucky Star and Hidamari Sketch: the later parts of the manga turning out to be more awesome than the anime itself.

The obvious recurring problem with this series is that there's not enough Yui and Ritsu, KyotoAni Goddesses of Rock.:(
Best guessing based on the manga and how they've been structuring the show, I'd say they could do 18 episodes. I doubt there is enough material in the two volumes for more than that, and I don't know how much is done on any later material since the second volume came out just a month or two before the anime started.
Judging by the stucture, they might have only 13 episodes, but if I'm reading the manga breaks verse episodes correctly, a fitting ending would be around a 14th or 15th episode...assuming they don't skip anything (though some of it might be repeatitive from earlier episodes). The remaining material in volume two could be left for a second season when they actually have enough material for a volume 3 (which I can guess would be the ending).
projects a second season ..
maybe after KyoAni finishes with Haruhi .. or an iteration of Full Metal Panic ..

That happens with practically every show that is based on an ongoing manga though.

True. Is it any surprise why I choose to keep silent whenever someone says such-and-such anime sucks (it being based off an on-going LN or manga series)?
Interesting that you would mention that series because I happened to have dropped that after episode 1.
Well, that is an example of a series where the first episode is a (80%) COMPLETE red herring. Go back and watch it episodes 2 onwards. Maybe in this case it's not the cover, but you should also not judge a book by its prologue :p
After that, you may want to rethink your ep. 1 == all watching strategy. Yes, Gungrave is that good. Yes, the ep1 is that bad.

This may be the most immediately popular of all the big KyoAni shows. The OP and ED zoomed to the upper reaches of the charts, and on 2channel they are already over 178,000 posts, which is incredible for seven episodes. There's no way KyoAni has "shot themselves in the foot" with this one, at least commercially.
But I'm afraid it's running out of steam for me. Heartwarming from time to time, incredibly moe, but not as funny as Lucky Star (for me) or as interesting as Suzumiya Haruhi. The Christmas episode seemed pretty limp, as far as I was concerned.
Maybe I still think KyoAni lost something important when they let Yamakan go.
Not that I'm going to stop watching or anything, but I'm finding several other shows more enjoyable: Eden, Phantom, Ristorante Paradiso, Pandora Hearts, Cross Game. And the OVAs Denpateki na Kanojo and Yurumates (which is the funniest recent show for me).

The seeming self imposed aggravation may be blocking one's senses when it comes to seeing character development, group bonding, and even increase in musical skills. There is not very much of this per episode, but there is some in each one.
I highly doubt that it would.
You're making the assumption that I was actually attempting a "srsfknbsns" mathematical quantification of your opinion, which is hardly the case. I was merely making a description of what your last reply looked like to me, and if I missed the point, whose fault is it? Certainly not mine, since I went to all the trouble to make your post as understandable as I can make it.
Better. Much more concise. I could start pointing out the answers to your questions, but since you've made the mistake of allowing me to get on your nerves, I think it's best you sleep it off for today. You'll probably feel better off next time, and I've got other things to do anyway. ;)
You made the assumption that I made the assumption that you were truly attempting a "srsfknbsns" mathematicfal quanitification of my opinion. I was merely talking about your attempt to say that if something has "XYZ" then I'll dislike it or something.
And don't worry, it takes a lot for me to get really pissed. It's not like I neg repped people in this thread for disagreeing with me (The brilliance of the Animesuki forum).
Moreover, lets wait for the next chapter of this series to unfold, as I do indeed got other things that need taking care of.
Anyway, since the viewers like Reckoner who aren't satisfied by how the show is going about it is in the minority, I suppose the stories' appeal is there as long as we can accept the notion, it's not for everyone.
Peace be with us all!
And both Ascaloth and Reckoner could use some sleep at this point.
Well I took up your offer, amen.
NOOOO!!!
What am I supposed to do with my popcorn now?
:(
Thanks for making me feel like a circus clown :upset:.

I guess I could give it a second shot, but I'll have to wait until I finish my other backlogged series.

Running out of steam is the thing. To me, K-On's popularity seems to be resting solely on the fact that it is done by KyoAni. They can't bank on that forever.

just curious, .. how do you define musical chemistry?
Even people simply playing their instruments and taking notice of one another would be enough. Suppose for instance Tsumugi plays some notes on her keyboard and one of the others joins in. The fact is we haven't seen any kind of musical interaction at all, at least not that I can recall. We've seen Mio tutor Yui a little, that's all, but she wasn't doing anything musical herself, just talking about chords.
With any band, you would expect some kind of interaction at a musical level as well as at a verbal level. Musicians naturally use their instruments to "talk" to one another, but ISTM there is no sense of any of these girls being musically inclined. Not even anyone strumming their instrument and getting some kind of reaction from the others such as nodding or tapping their feet.

I think they've had more chemistry doing AIR GUITAR solos then much anything else.
Go figure.

Sorry about the late reply, i haven't had much free time.
What Macross did you watch? Even Macross 7 had its fair share of mecha and mecha-related plots...
Ehhh not really. I watch Macross Frontier and while yes mechas were always around they weren't really the focus of the episode much of the time. If you disagree, well we just habe different opinions.
Oh there will be lots of songs for K-ON I'm sure and have no doubt, it's just a matter of whether they make it into the show or onto set of character singles that is the question.
I wasn't really complaining about the lack of music in the show, more responding to comments made by others. The rest of the show is very entertaining it doesn't need to be music all the time for me.

I never saw the lack of art in Hidamari Sketch as a sign of weakness. If there is not enough music in K-On, people should probably go somewhere else. Seriously, do people think that there will be music playing in every single episode? Yui is still trying to get the hang of her guitar!

Let's be honest here. This might be a show about a highschool rock band, but it's really driven by the humorous interactions of the characters. The band thing is just a backdrop and perhaps a source for the occasional plot, joke, or reference. Don't expect this show to be about how they make it big, and all the hard times and difficulties they have in learning about themselves as musicians.
That said. I agree that this episode kinda abandoned said backdrop. It was cute and sweet, for sure. However, I'd rather have another episode like 6 where the band had a more prominent role.

I'll be very surprised if they really make it big.
They already have.

Er, in-universe? I don't think so. The K-On club is still trying to find its bearings. Also, a good guitarist alone doesn't make a good band. And I don't mean basic competence. To me, the K-On club would be a place for the girls to chill from school, although it certainly wouldn't hurt Tsumugi to be in a great band. It helps the family business.
Besides, from the next ep on, there will be a newcomer. So, it's a club, not a band, unless you have "team manager" in mind.

Well, I've seen some pretty shitty acts get signed onto Ozzfest, so I'm sure the ultimate dream of playing a gig at Budokan wouldn't seem too far behind that... :p
Also, I checked for the can Nodoka gave as a present. Again, Japanese guys suggest it's yakinori there (I get it is fried sea weeds).

Yeap, I was asking around about that later. Turn out, I mistook きのり as a kanji character so I was stuck at 焼<bwuh?> where it actually is 焼きのり for a while. :heh:

They can't bank on that forever.Maybe I'm underestimating people's devotion to a certain animation company, but I think the popularity rests more on pure moe, and also on the fact that a lot of people like this animation style (as I do). But I think K-On is not giving me a lot more than that -- which I felt Lucky Star did.
I'm fairly happy that KyoAni does only one show at a time. It means they don't have to subcontract much work, and can keep their animation standards high. Any problem I have with the show is more the writing and direction than the animation.
Hidamari Sketch had great art. It just wasn't wall-to-wall. In fact, I loved the art in that show.

This episode was great, But yeah the changing scene with Mio seems straight out of Haruhi, almost a direct parody. Also if hate Christmas episodes, with all costs avoid PoPoTan. It's practically all Christmas episodes or at least Christmas themes
^You can talk about your reasons for that in the K-On!! (second season)-generic discussion thread.
