I swear the similarity to KyoAni and Haruhi is to get the hype going. At the start it just looks too much like a Haruhi clone, down to the character designs. Now that more materials is shown, it looks like a good show on its own.
Being similar to Haruhi at least gets the otaku talking about the show and might give the first episode a chance for whatever reason. :heh:
Lots of people can't wait to watch this show, and I really want to watch this right now, but we have to wait until April 2010,
Look what I found

uhm, this series has got a lot art of violence
I gotta admit, I think the BGM hyped up the trailer more than it should have for me, haha. Nevertheless, I'm excited as ever for this show to come out now...

Hope P.A. Works will manage to make a gem out of this out. Loved their debut work True Tears and watching through CANAAN atm.
ANN has a few cast members
Harumi Sakurai as Yuri
Hiroshi Kamiya as Otonashi
Kana Hanazawa as Tenshi
Eri Kitamura as Yui
Wow,the other day I was thinking "the only way I could be more hyped for this would be if Kana Hanazawa was in it"...
Hell yes, Kana Hanazawa~! My interest in this show just rose 300%.
I'd appreciate it if someone could describe which of the characters Tenshi is.

The silver-haired girl.
So, a (relative) newbie as Yuri, but two of my favorite voice actors as the other two leads? Fuck yeah.
Eh? No Aya this time? lol. XD Wonder how this will turn out.

Kazane as Yuri? WOO! OH YES!!!! She isn't really a new seiyuu (unless you count eroge as well)
Has LB saya vibes....(drools)
Holy crap...
I always thought she did a really great job on Saya's route. I can't count how many times I burst out laughing playing that, haha. Tsuntsun so delicious Dx
So glad to hear that she got a lead role here.

It will be EPIC if Yuri is a tsundere. Because then, we have another tsundere queen at our hands other than Kugimiya Rie.
Considering this is by P.A. Works Im going to restate my prediction for how this will turn out.
The animation will be very pretty, but the story might be severely lacking.
Of course I still will try it though, Im not going to pass up shiney glorious animation.

This series has a different Series Composition/writer some unknown guy called Jun Maeda maybe you heard of him? Also P.A. has used different directors for each new series this time it's Seiji Kishi one of the best comedy directors in anime right now. So who knows this my turn out good besides just having good animation.
BTW True Tears rocked. Well except if you were a noe fan. :p

Seto No Hanayome & Hiromi ftw.
QFT! :heh::heh:
Watched the PROMO !
It sounds interesting with a sad story .
"In a world after death, angels fight for their fate and their future. Yuri, the leader of the Shinda Sekai Sensen, rebels against the god who destined her to have an unreasonable life. On the otherhand, Tenshi, the chairperson of the student council for the world after death, battles against the SSS members. SSS members utilize armed weaponry to battle it out against the angels harnessing supernatural powers."
So they are all angels ?
say the trailer, overall pretty cheezy, seems really good from an animation standpoint, like I mean holy crap those scenes are really well animated, plus the BMG was pretty fantastic, I will definitely be giving this series a go.

If someone wanted to download a copy of the trailer, is there a way to do so? I know it's available in a bunch of places. Actually, I'm more curious as to how people are getting it in the first place. Are they just running recording software (which seems like a great way to get a poor quality copy), or are they able to extract the original FLV?

I wondered if there was any new news in dengeki this month. I have no access :(
@ spaced-I would beg to differ on Maeda as a writer he is completely capable of great writing. (my opinion of course) If you played or read anything written by him it could be understandable, as it would be your opinion. But unless you just saw his adaptations, that is not very accurate to say.
I have ripped the sound from the PV and made a short 2 min. song, is pure win.....myiPhone is tired from playing this thing......maybe I will call the song "endless 2".........

Actually just heard about this today.
That's a pretty dynamic and fun-looking trailer.
This looks like a much more action-packed version of, er... a certain prominent anime that I probably don't need to name, given other comments on this thread. ;) :heh:
In theory, at least, a much more action-packed version of that anime should completely rock! Especially since I always wanted more action in that anime. ;)
The plot description doesn't quite seem to jive with what the anime looks like, though. Not sure what to make of that yet.
But... that aside, this looks very intriguing! :)

Hmm..The name drew me in here.
Plot sounds okay, I guess. Reminds me of anime's that try to be seriously action-y, though.
I'm going to wait and watch it before I make any judgements, though

Personally I like Jun Maeda's writing, so that's a big plus for me. If I can get something along the lines of the action parts of Little Busters! then that will be perfectly fine with me. Also baseball.
At the very least, no one is going to have a terminal disease, be a ghost, or have a fatal accident. Because they're already dead.
So they are all angels ?
There's just one angel and that's Tenshi. Everyone else are just souls in Purgatory.

If they find enough room in the series to go into everyone's past, Having every character meet the same end in their previous life wouldn't be that interesting, unless it happened at the same time and same place.

This is probably where the problem arose when Maeda was worried over content not being put in the anime. Though the light novel version/ manga would cover it.

This series makes me question the same thing as in Bleach (hopefully someone can explain this to me):
Since the setting is in the afterlife, if someone dies, where do they go? To a second afterlife? cuz the afterlife is already for dead people, so then you kill a dead person and they become more dead :D, or is it like you kill a person and THEN they're dead for real and their existance dissappears forever.

Since they seem to be using a somewhat Christian setting (Angels, fighting God, etc), I'd imagine if they "died", they'd have their existence completely obliterated.

Or maybe they just get resurrected again. Like Valhalla.
My theory is that they're immortal (*cough* technically speaking) but can still get incapacitated by injuries until they regenerate at some undisclosed time.
The wikipedia page says:
While the injuries or cause of death is gone, those in the afterlife school still can feel pain or other things as they did when they were alive.
That same page also says the school is where students learn to give up any lingering attachments they still have from life before finally going to heaven.
I believe the main conflict and theme of the show is going to be coming to terms with their death and ultimately, learning to let it go. It's about moving on and acceptance.
Obviously, the members of the SSS do not believe in acceptance, hence their ongoing war.
Which does raise a question. If you can't die, and the enemy can't die, and you can't become alive again, then what's the point of fighting?
Probably because it's better then doing nothing about it.

They'll have injuries and death in heaven as well, because if they didn't, there would be no point in having fights with guns.
In Angel Beats, the characters from Key stopped relying on magical orbs and miracles and started beating others up in heaven. I hope Nagisa from Clannad joins the team and help them as well.:p And also Fuuko, with her magical star power.

When they die again, they go to Third Heaven, where Haruhi rules supreme, lol.

LMAO P.A Works&Jun Maeda, that's not really a PV if the whole video focusing on production. They should learn from Seiji Mizushima&Sunrise from the Gundam 00 Movie 1st Trailer that also have little production tidbits scene but featuring interesting animation footages.

Still, this was interesting. I thought it was pretty awesome how the production team actually went through the trouble of filming real girls playing on a stage to get that concert scene done. The animated version which pops up right after it looks brilliant!
Also, it's always cool to see Jun Maeda. After his picture showed up a few months ago he's been appearing a lot more on the media, haha. I guess people saying how COOL he looks might've helped!

What exactly is wrong with this concept. You obviously don't seem to be familiar with Jun Maeda and his stories, otherwise you'd be looking forward to this just like any other sane person! While it might look over the top, remember that the same guy brought us little gems such as AIR, Clannad and, last but not least, Makoto's route in Kanon, which is certainly one of the most touching things I have ever read.
I think you're being extremely unfair with Jun Maeda and completely ignoring his fame for being one of the best scenario writers in the eroge industry. Give him some credit, will 'ya?
Actually, I'm looking forward to the series for reasons that are just as valid, but on the other end of the spectrum. Because it's an original series and because it's directed by Seiji Kishi, who's well known for an over the top, campy, flat-out ridiculous style. Then again, I'm the guy who, when shown something cheesy, would likely say, "Is it possible to make it cheesier? If so, do it."
why does this thread have sixteen (16) pages

Lots of comments about the main character looking like Harushi (must be like 4 or 5 pages lol)
Rest of the comments can be summed up by what someone said above:

Because if it is OC then that's awesome. Won't have to worry about Novelf**s spoiling everything for once.If by "OC" you mean that it is an anime first... no. There's a 4-koma and light novel already happening according to wiki. However, from what I've heard about it, it's just teaser stuff. The meat of the story seems to be planned for the anime and primary manga, which will be April and Spring, respectively (not quite simultaneous, but close?)
But, yes, it seems like the anime will be the first look into the largest portion of the plot. (What's OC in this case? I can't help but think Original Character.)

Yeah that's what I thought too. Since Maeda said he wanted to put importance into the comedy aspect when he grabbed the director of Seto no Hanayome, I figured Angel Beats would turn out to be mostly slice-of-life-ish while combining action and comedy. Sort of like Fumoffu.

P.A. Works does good stuff.
Just check out Canaan and True Tears. Sure those two are their only works they've done by themselves, but they're still nicely animated, decent shows.

Canaan has some of the best gunfu you'll see in anime, and True Tears was wonderfully animated (especially the basketball scenes) and the characters were drawn very believably. i'm very excited for this show.
also, everyone should check out true tears. its by far one of the better romances of the last 10 years.

Yep, I agree on both accounts, most people are probably interested in this because Key is involved in it but it was by looking up what P.A works were going to do next that I found this, the fact that Key and some of my favorite VAs are involved too is just the icing on the cake for me.
And True Tears is one of the only animes that managed to use still frames in some episodes and not have me think "they're running out of animation budget".

Further to what germanturkey and totoum say, PA Works is not only good, but also is like KyoAni in that it doesn't have its head office in Tokyo, but in an even more out-of-the-way-place than KyoAni: in Toyama, on the west coast.
There a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAd1SOUaf6I) about them talking about how they work, and mentioning that they set up a sort of dorm for young animators to come and live cheaply there. You can see the animators working at fast pace in the office.
And they have done a series of PR videos (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=P.A.Works+toyama&search_type=&aq=f) about the area, combining live footage and animation.
They do have offices in Tokyo, too, but the head office is apparently over in Toyama, which is famous for mountains and lots of snow.

True Tears has enough support to get a blu-ray release, even after two years. It's coming out real soon.
True Tears is one of the best romances I've ever seen. I think P.A. Works has a successful future ahead of them.
On Angel Beats, I hope that is has good comedy. What people seem to gloss over is that while Key is known for it's drama and romance, it also does excellent comedy. I've lost count of the number of lines in Kanon, Air, Clannad, and Little Busters that caused me to crack up. Seiji Kishi as director is defiantly a step in the right direction.

I wasn't that blown away by true tears actually. It was very well animated but I wasn't fond of the cast. The story was decent but nothing amazing.
Why is there a sudden band against Kyo-Ani is it the "Moe" shows they do? Or because of K-On 2? I understand that part. But is it because they are hyped up?

kyoani has definitely dropped in quality. if you look at k-on or clannad and then compare that to FMP:TSR the difference is day and night. i don't know if they got lazy because of their haruhi success, but their quality of work, which is why i started following the studio, has definitely fallen.
true tears is a very big love it or hate it show. the story isn't what you'd expect from a high school romance and there are some strange elements such as the chickens paralleling what's happening in real life. i personally didn't like the chicken stuff, but the more mature romance definitely pulled me in and kept me riveted until the end.
i don't know if they got lazy because of their haruhi success, but their quality of work, which is why i started following the studio, has definitely fallen.
Late 2000's recession in Japan (http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/jan/30/japan-recession). If you adjust your expectations, just the way you'd adjust money value due to inflation, KyoAni is as good as ever.

You're missing the point. In 1st place FMP is full of actions while Clannad is drama show and K-On is moe show. It's totally ridiculous to compare with them. Such a show needs just fluid animation and nice artwork. KyoAni just changed their character's design that's all to it and then people started to complain... Anyway, animation is as good as it were before. And KyoAni still remains one of the most successful studios ever. Their anime always sells well(except Munto) and there's always the reason why it's sells well.

Not to mention that all series aren't to be affected by the same budget, despite being produced by the same studio, because of the sponsors, period of time (and by extension, economy crisis like proto mentioned already), and more importantly: the number of Episodes, which is an iron gauntlet rule for any studio. Just compare Sora no Otoshimono with Ookami Kakushi and you can see a vastly different animation quality, despite procuded by the same studio, AIC, within only 6 months or something.
Likewise, you can exactly expect a different treatment for Angel Beats compared to True Tears, considering the same factors: genre, probably different budgets and whatever extra factors you can add.

I must say, the animation quality is outstanding from the preview alone. Although I'm not impressed with the synopsis, I'm gonna give this anime a watch once it begins airing since it is Jun Maeda's plot. Clannad sits at the top of my best anime list so I expect no less from him.

i disagree with the animation being the same quality. there are obvious discrepancies between series and episodes. everyone can see the art style changed, but being an instrument focused show (k-on), there was no ep with half the animation detail of the haruhi concert. you'd figure there'd be at least one ep where they showed their hands or mouths, but there wasn't.

Well, Clannad certainly made some progress because some of the lead heroines were well adjusted and were not suicidal/dying/going crazy. It gets very tiring, ya know. :p I know the Kyoto Animation ones merged storylines, causing a tragedy oversaturation, but still geez give me a break. Fortunately, Angel Beats won't have this problem.
Sure I expect something heartwrenching, but if I feel like it's being rigged again to drag on the sadness I'm gonna roll my eyes. :eyespin: I will probably like it anyways though. :uhoh:
Maeda Jun seems to have unlocked his Ecstasy Gauge and gone to the dark side of guro after LBEX's development. I'm sure there will be plenty of that in AB.
The whole thing feels like a Saya After, Saya from LBEX. Same character personality, same "game-ish" setting, same voice actress, same "can't leave the poor girl to her loneliness" and "we are all allies" friendship theme.
As for source materials, 4 chapters of 4-koma and 6 chapters of light novels have been published for AB. The 4-komas are character intros and random stories, just like LB's, and the light novel is said to be 7 chapters in total, and is a prequel to the anime.

i get that it proportionally decreased in accordance with costs, but it doesn't change the fact that it got worse. Just watching a few episodes of True Tears then watching an episode of K-on hurt my eyes when you compare something as simple as walking around in their school uniforms. but w/e no point in arguing it.
and i hope its like f s/n and has blood in it.
this is going a bit on a tangent, but I have to say it. germanturkey, I can understand why you enjoyed, preferred True Tears, and in some aspects think that it was better than any show produced by kyoani. however, if you take a careful look, you will notice that the works produced by the latter have improved in some aspects---in terms of art/animation---over their predecessors, and not the opposite (no comments about the writing, though). take the lucky star ova for example, which was an improvement over the series itself, with more pleasant and interesting art/animation/character designs. even k-on, which came after, proved itself to be a better 4-koma adaptation, animation/art wise. even though I'm not going into much detail as to why and how, what I'm trying to say is that their works haven't got necessarily worse as you seem to imply; instead, they have shown some kind of improvement if you compare them by these terms.
by the way, the kyoani discussion is really out-of-place, so guys stop it.

I'm expecting quite a few posts made by people disapointed by the first episode.Well, that much seems obvious. Half of the Internet erroneously believes that this is a Key visual novel adaptation, so they'll no doubt be surprised/confused if they go into it expecting the spiritual successor to Clannad or some such. And the other half of the Internet that understands that this is an anime original story that's supposed to be different doesn't know enough yet about exactly how this will be different, so have built-up all sorts of crazy expectations of what it will or won't be like. (And given that the pictures and plot snippets on the Net seem to have a bit of everything, that's not totally surprising.) And then, on the off-chance that the first episode does generally impress despite the expectations, you'll have the required quota of nay-sayers who will try to ensure that "negative opinions are properly represented" to preserve the Great Cosmic Balance of Opinion on the Internet.
I would be totally shocked if we don't have a backlash no matter what happens. It'd be nice to wish that people would keep an open mind and give a show time to come into its own... but, yeah. We know how this will work... :heh:
Here's how the series will go:
Starting with action scenes, gore, singing and dancing scenes, plus all the flashy stuff with no substance.
Then it'll be comedy, comedy, comedy, comedy, getting sad, sadder, very sad, oh no not that guy, I liked the guy, oh no not her too! And then, a happy end.
I'm already disappointed, but still hanging onto a sliver of hope... Mixed feelings, so to speak...

I don't really see how one can be disappointed without even seeing the first episode nor having any original material (light novel/manga/games) to compare it to.
Ah well, people like you will never be satisfied no matter what.
I already read its light novels and manga. Although they do not have the plots to be portrayed in the anime, they are good indicators. And it's not like they're bad, which is the reason for that sliver of hope, but the thought of anything Key turned into a shounen manga type of thing is by itself revolting enough.

That's not really a lot of material to be basing such a firm conclusion on. The short stories are only a prelude to the anime's story, and the 4-koma is mostly comedy. The official manga doesn't start until this month's issue (to be released on Tuesday). And besides that, Dengeki G's is a seinen magazine, and almost all of Keys works have been adapted into similar seinen manga.
Are you sure you're thinking of the same project?
Heh, if you are gonna quote it, at least read it. I know the novels are prequels. By shounen manga type of stuff, I meant stuff like fighting scenes, needless gore, deaths. Also, what's with all this PR about its animation quality being high? If Key fans had cared about graphics, they wouldn't have finished most of the games, with Hinoue's *cough* drawings...
I'm only still hopeful because the show might get over that non-sense after episode 1 and carry on with a proper story. The atmosphere in the prequel novel is a good start, a somewhat a good start... An okay start... Meh...

Departure from Clannad? What do you mean? Angel Beats isn't even in the same genre as Clannad so I doubt it'll be even remotely close. Jun Maeda does have his own writing style though, if that's what you mean. - one-time insertion (one time and you're out): higher CPM
- multiple-time insertion (1 full page each day/week/etc., I don't know how many times it is at Yomiuri for a 6-month contract): lower CPM
The CPM gets lower the more times the ad is inserted onto the newspaper, but that CPM is for each single time.
With Yomiuri, it's about CPM x 10000.
Imagine how much you would pay to get 10+ million people to know about you (there's a lot you can do with a full page, and it's not just random people, the target audience is people who read newspapers on a daily basis) after just one day. $359k seems fair then.

That's a costly endeavor indeed, but it seems they've been intending to go all-out from the start anyway. Throwing Key/Maeda's name around, churning out PVs one after another, building up a shiny staff list (and deliberately designing a Haruhi-lookalike?)... I'd be damned if it won't get hyped like the Second Coming. :heh:
Now all it takes is for the series to actually live up to such expectations....
That's a nationwide paper right? Canned Dogs said it's apparently only for the Kanto region? If it's only in circulation in one region then it is expensive...

Hah, alright. Let's say it's an art style. If we had a poll ranking the character arts between say Planetarian and Clannad, or between LB's Kud route and Haruka route, I'd be very surprised if the latters are ranked higher.
Obviously Kud is one of the most popular LB cast so that isn't a fair comparison. Planetarian and Clannad are of very equal quality. In Planetarian there is one character compared to a cast. I'm sure the favor would be to Clannad since it is rated one of top visual novels. It seems like your trying to base your opinion as whole assumption that her style is disliked. Some obviously don't like it, but it obviously is liked if it sells and has an art book published.
If it's only in circulation in one region then it is expensive...
I assume that's a one-time ad, the CPM must be more than $48.54 (as of June 2009), let's say about $60. And Kanto makes up about 2/3 of the newspaper's circulation... you get the idea.
http://adv.yomiuri.co.jp/yomiuri/rate/
It's the ad cost calculator. Select the region, edition, full page ad etc. and you get the number.
It's expensive and out of reach for most, I know. :heh:

Kinda silly quoting myself, but it seems you two both missed it. Also, interesting that Kud, Rin, Sasasasasasami, and Saya's routes were all given to Na-Ga. Mio's too, but I'm not sure if she's popular.
That and if you just look at Kanata's front and side drawings, you can hardly tell they are supposed to be the same person. I don't think style has anything to do with that.

Uh, not sure if this is old but the ANN page now has listings for the rest of the character voices. I am somewhat curious as to why there is an American guy in the middle of the cast? Is it an error or should I brace for some gaijin in the middle of the show? Do we all get to the same place after we die and it doesn't matter if we're American, Japanese, French, whatever?!

Well, after bitsy of searching, both wikipedia (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%9E%E3%82%A4%E3%82%B1%E3%83%AB%E3%83%BB%E3%8 3%AA%E3%83%BC%E3%83%90%E3%82%B9) and some sources confirms that Michael Rivas is the same Michael Rivas I'm thinking... While wikipedia is not the most trusted source, the info has been out for a while so can't say they didn't already give all their best tracking this. ANN also resonates with the news link that says he is a Hawaiian singer who starred in Tentai Senshi Sunred something in one of Ketsu Inu news IIRC...
He is a Japanese born singer who grows up in Hawaii (Which makes him errr... non-Japanese language singer in any case, but still, profile said he is a Japanese native speaker). Although I'm not sure about his works but TK's description does fit with the requirement for his seiyuu...? B|a

What I meant is the both art quality is fine. Even some of Saya's images are off portion and just look off (cover image). What I'm meaning is regardless for the art style Kud is a more popular character so the polls would be in her favor.
I'm not fond of Itaru' LB style compared to her previous works like Clannad which is my favorite. Rewrite too I also really like as well.
Quite a potent team combination... I rank SnH as my top comedy anime of all time, and the thought of seeing more work from its director is appealing. True Tears (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=le4sLKignEE) is not my all-time top romance anime, but it is definitely a top-ranker, and I still remember gushing over the technical awesomeness of the sound direction when it was airing.
The sound of the basketball bounce was... EPIC!!!! People probably know of the term "scenery porn". Well, True Tears had "audio porn" in spades, and the PV already hints at it again.
Jun Maeda? Well, I'm not a zealous fanboy of his, but I'll give credit to the man for one thing. He could probably spin a tale where a girl talks about her pet rock and make a grown man cry about it.
Other than that, the one thing I DO WANT to gush about is the white-haired girl. OMG! She's the moefied personification of a Protoss Zealot! I just need her to say, "My life for Aiur!" and lightning can strike me down right where I am, for my existence would be complete... She has PSI-BLADES! Or at least something that looks like them...

In case someone is wondering, Yuri is a tsundere indeed. Though, like most tsunderes, she's much more of a tsun-tsun than a dere-dere, actually.
I'm somewhat new to animesuki but I was wondering what the criterias are for an anime to get its own subforum and do you think this one will? I assume its popularity and I think this has enough...

From my understanding, mods have their own undisclosed criteria for judging which series warrants a subforum. It'll be done when it's done, so normal forumers shouldn't go around requesting for it (as it'll probably just annoy the mods :heh:).

I watched (well, skimmed) the TS and this show is really impressively fuckingdumb.jpg. I mean really, I expected it to be dumb, but it really went far beyond anything I could possibly have expected.
Imagine Haruhi (the show looks a LOT like Haruhi, to the point of being a blatant ripoff, except the animation isn't very good), except all the girls haveeveryone has ridiculous weapons, and it takes place in the afterlife and everyone's fighting "angels" (read: a Yuki Nagato clone with a sword in her arm) while being in high school. Also, people do NOT die when they are killed (this gimmick is used at least three times). Also, there's a concert with the main female character as the vocalist for no apparent reason whatsoever. Also, there will inevitably be melodrama. Also, lots of blogging. Also, a Lia OP.

I'm more disappointed by the idea that the animation quality might not be very good than the fact that the entire thing is dumb. If it's really not that good, I guess PA Works + Aniplex isn't as much of a godly combination as I thought.

Eh, the animation is quite okay. Overall, the best thing it has going for it right now is the visual side of the spectrum. The backgrounds are nice, there's some amazing animation on the concert scene and nice throughout the whole episode and uh... that's it, yeah.
Overall, I'm not sold. The comedy bits weren't exactly funny and the climax scene of the episode was somewhat weak, probably because it kept alternating between the concert, which was great (everything but the music, I'm a bit eh about it, the last 20 secs or so are nice but orz), and the other extremely weird scene.
Oh well, let me save my judgment for when I get to rewatch it with subs. So far, it wasn't as impressive as I was expecting it to be, but I guess my expectations were very high.

The direction is... horrible... and it stumbles over its own feet in setting a consistent tone the entire time. It screams TAKE ME SERIOUSLY! And then characters have ten ton weights dropped on their heads. It spits out 5 minutes of exposition about how important things are, and then somebody interrupts by slipping on a proverbial banana peel. Then there's the concert which has no purpose or place in the episode. They just cut back and forth to it while bad pop plays in the middle of what would seem to be a dramatic scene... if not for the pop music and the fact that they keep cutting away to watch girls dance.
If it could settle down and pick whether or not it wants to be a gag comedy or more serious, it would work A LOT better, but the presentation this episode was really painfully undirected and haphazard at best.

While I must admit that the Haruhi comparison is a legitimate claim, I don't think it's fair to bash this series on the first episode alone. We don't know how she's going to develop and how things will turn out. It's episode 1, I really don't understand what the big deal is. Honestly, I suspecting the reaction is more to the due show being overhyped as the "Second Coming" and not living up then it being bad.

Honestly, I suspecting the reaction is more to the due show being overhyped as the "Second Coming" and not living up then it being bad.
:heh:
I don't know who had their expectations that high but I sure didn't. This is the first time Jun Maeda is doing something like this, it's also way out of his comfort zone. This is definitely not his typical genre and only 13 episodes to work with. I had a neutral expectation level from the very beginning so the fault only lies on the audience for building the hype up.
I wouldn't blame the producers or Jun Maeda because they want people to watch it so it's expected that they would promote it like it's the "Second Coming" so that should be a given (as a matter of fact, any creator would build up hype for their show.) Like I said, I didn't expect this to be on Clannad's level but I'm just hoping that Mr. Maeda can give us something different and something we can all enjoy.
What I'm saying isn't necessarily aimed at anyone in particular (although I'm quoting you, it's just a general response,) so I hope some don't get the wrong idea. I just believe that a show being over-hyped is only a direct result of the audience that expects too much from it. All I know is that I'm not going to condemn a show off the first episode, there's a difference between judging and criticizing.
Well, it's entertaining. I love this show.

Classic Key formula in action. So much for the fanfare about the visuals. For those disappointed by the animation, ah ha ha ha {repeat ha indefinitely}! Let's hope Maeda doesn't read too much into the negative comments and attempt to hop off a building again.
Turn this into aud+slide show and it's still enjoyable, though I'd rather have it as a VN due to proper length and pacing concerns. Pity they didn't trust Sawashiro enough to let her sing though.

By the first 5 minutes, I already wanted to turn back... In a different meaning, an amazing anime.
Of course, this is just the first episode and it might get better, but as far as the first episode goes, it was pretty boring. Just... boring. Almost made me feel like I lost some IQ...
The character designs are also bad, compared to the pretty background and the battle animation (which was just a bunch of people standing and shooting, disappointingly).

Just watched it. Kind of impossible for it to live up to the hype, but it was mildly entertaining... I guess... everything felt really forced, though. I agree with the others who said that it doesn't seem to know what it wants to be: comedy? Drama? Action series? Floor wax? Dessert Topping? Pick one and go with it.
Usually you do get some comedy in the early episodes, if only to get the viewers to like the characters before tearing their hearts out later on, but this just didn't work.
It felt like one of those package tours where they drag you around a major city in 4 hours and give you whiplash. "Now you should be feeling angst... and now quick! Laugh! Now, run for your life! Hurry, shoot! Aww, you got impaled. Now quick! A witty comeback!"
The animation was all over the place-- good in some places, bad in others-- and if that's the episode 1 effect, I'd worry about the budget for later episodes.
All that said, it could always get better over time. I'll keep my fingers crossed for it to succeed, because it would be sad for this sort of enterprise to fail in these economic times.
Besides, there's plenty of bad anime out there-- we don't need any more of it. Right now, I'd say 6.5/10. Needs improvement.

Hype is a dangerous weapon to wield. :heh: And yes, a lot of us saw the inevitable backlash coming from miles away, so it's not surprising.
Regarding the direction, it may at least be worth considering the author's own admission the first episode is mostly to setup the premise, and the sort of "real show" begins in the second episode. Not saying that's an excuse or anything, but it's at least worth considering in terms of giving the show a chance to find its way. (Then again, that's good advice for just about every show; speaking of Haruhi, I remember people's initial reaction when the first episode of that show aired... :heh: )
This was surprisingly bad.
It looked and felt really cheap, but without Shaft's stylish excess to cover it up. The jokes all uniformly fell completely flat. The characters felt even flatter than the jokes. Yuri might have talked about the other students being NPCs, but really, half the SSS members felt just as generic--especially the guys.
I don't usually notice things like lip sync and voice acting, but there were a ton of places where the character movement felt entirely off with what the characters were actually doing. Like when Otonashi wakes up from when Tenshi stabbed him, his voice felt frantic while the character's actual movements were sluggish and awkward.
Again, surprisingly bad.

If the light novels are anything to go by, aren't most of the characters supposed to feel "robotic"? For lack of a better word. I remember that Yuri and Otonashi are probably the only characters that should feel human, so far that is. I could be wrong though considering I have yet to watch the first episode. angel beats ep 1
like i just said before, some fanboys/fangirls already yelled "she is my wife!!/he is my husband!!" in their comments just watching the first ep....
Just finished watching episode 1. Overall, it was fairly enjoyable but I can see the pacing issues already and the cast seems pretty big judging from this episode. The atmosphere is gorgeous though, I love the scenery and the lighting effects, the animation was done pretty well from what I could see. The reason I see pacing issues though is because they seem to throw a lot at you too quickly and there isn't much time to swallow all of it, but considering the 13 episode count, it was inevitable.
I can't say much about the secondary characters yet since this is only the introductory phase but they all seem pretty interesting except Noda, but that's a matter of opinion because I just don't like his particular type of character. But I will say this, Otonashi and Yuri are fairly entertaining from the little that I got to see in this episode. Yuri's personality is a little over-the-top but that doesn't necessarily make it a bad thing either, I guess it's a personal preference type of thing here too.
Otonashi seems like a very reasonable male lead and his past might be a focus point for the plot as much as the fight against Tenshi. I enjoyed the episode but there isn't much I can really say about it. Nothing really stands out so I'll just have to wait for it to pick up.
...Ha! Epi01 introduced properly maybe half of the casts. I thought it was pretty funny until the nonsense about fighting and band showed up. Good thing it's supposed to be full Key style later.
PS. Otonashi = 音無 = no voice, which is generally the case for virtual novels main characters. =D

I'm guessing there's a reason for them to introduce most of the cast this quickly. There might be some heavy character development if Jun Maeda sticks to his guns. At least I hope so.
As for Otonashi, that's a pretty clever name :D Oh Maeda, you sly devil you :heh:

I don't know, Harumi Sakurai is doing a pretty good job so far. Let's give her another couple of episodes just to get a feel for her.

Well some of it is actually translated somewhat correct but most of it is just a waste of time.
I thought the 2nd Season of K-ON would be the most scrutinized anime this season, but looks like Angel Beats is going to be right up there with it.
I know the first episode doesn't make a series, but based solely on episode 1, I didn't like it that much. The story, characters and voice acting didn't really catch my attention. Might get better once I understand what's going on so let's see what episode 2 has to offer.

The worst thing with this show IMO is the INSANE hype, which is partly of Jun Maeda's own bringing.
I still wish the show the best, but at this point in his career, Maeda might be almost trying too hard. While his earlier works were more subdued affairs that didn't quite have the hype this show has.

Yurippe... To think she had such a birth defect... :T_T: Definitely going to be a sob story over this problem, right?

Let's give her another couple of episodes just to get a feel for her....I'm not into her yet, but I could have said that about Aaya in the first couple of eps of Haruhi, too, so I'll give her time. I must admit, however, that with Kamiyan there, I really wanted to hear Chiwa.
Ep1 didn't blow me away, but it feels as if it has potential depth and will develop.

I'm rather confused with this first episode as nothing makes sense. It felt rather depressing too to find out that all these characters have died and are currently, for the lack of a better word, in limbo right now.
Oh well, I haven't seen any anime recently that has a big "wtf" factor so this anime might actually be entertaining and make sense down along the long, at least I hope.
Oh yeah, I'm really digging the song in the middle of the anime.

IMO I would be willing to bet the vast majority of the QQ'ers are suffering from "Herp derp I fell for the hype" syndrome where it's bad for not living up to godly expectations. The story so far obviously left room for more episodes to fill things in, so to try and judge it just based on what was in this episode is jumping the gun.

I liked the first episode sure it didn't blow my mind but it wasn't bad, it was enjoyable. We've only gotten a glimpse of the character in the first ep and they'll be developed for sure.

I honestly can't blame Maeda for hyping this show, it's the first time he's doing something in this genre. I also don't believe he would say that his show was bad, any creator/writer/producer would hype their show because they want people to watch it, I think that much is obvious. I just think the viewers themselves set their expectations too high which is why people seem to be overreacting.
I myself can't really say whether or not Maeda is "trying too hard" yet considering the fact that we've only seen one episode. Let him tell his story and then we can pass judgment.
Ep1 didn't blow me away, but it feels as if it has potential depth and will develop.
Likewise, I feel the same way. And just going by history, I'll have faith in Maeda until the end (I.e. - Unless this series devolves rather than develops.)

Watched Episode 1.
So, great visuals, great audio, and....what did I just watch there? X_X
I was going to come back from blogging vacation just for this show. Now, I'm having second thoughts. :uhoh:
So much QQ in this thread, yet I was completely blown away.
The visuals, the atmosphere, the music.... :O. Such an amazing insert song right off the bat. If this series gets any better and keeps these production values I think we may have a classic in our hands :O.
