View Full Version : Darker Than Black [2nd Season] generic discussion
Damn I was busy and didn't get the chance to watch it yet....but I'm on it now ^^
Will comment on the episode later.....Yes it finally started
As much as I have been anticipating this new season, the first ep wasn't really what I had in mind all this time. I couldn't help but be reminded of what has become of Dexter (tv show) this season. It used to be all about the double life living guy, struggling to appear normal in his daily life etc..(heck, they even share the "sister" complex) While Hei didn't really show any sign of change(What little have we actually seen from him. I mean gosh, why would we even need to see the main character in the first episode? Oh that's right..he is not the main character anymore!), the new loli made the show look insanely on crack. Frankly, the first half of ep 1 was like watching a school life anime, of course, with the obligatory confession as a gimmick. I can understand that most of the new characters were made for the audience to take a liking for them, because they will most probably get killed in the episodes to come anyway, but was it really necessary? I mean, the whole bringing new "main" characters? What happened to Misaki or Yin? There are plenty old usable characters left, but of course, they are old and need to get rid off asap. (bye bye April..and Mao?) But can this still be called Darker than Black..or just some kinda bad spin off? The first episode really made me think that the new season was a grave mistake, it's like a shell of it's former self. Oh well, the first season will still remain one of my favorite animes.
The ending at least made me wanna watch another new episode. Thanks hobo Hei, I really dig your new facial hair, seriously.

Like someone already said, if he would die like this, very lame death. :uhoh:I guess I see that differently. The very casualness of his death, if that's what it was, and even April going so soon, both inject an aura of unpredictability and danger. Maybe we can just depend on new characters and situations for the evolution of this show.

I, uhh, thought Mao died last season. :Z
And April being offed like that was just...REALLY disappointing. I liked her ;_;.
But otherwise, it was actually a really nice episode. :)
You've gotta love the nod towards November 11 in that bar scene. Easily my favorite part of the episode.

Mh yeah thats true.
Was i was pointing on, was, to die like that, is kinda lame. In the first season, Mao was a key character. So i thought he would die in a more "greater" way, like in a fight or something. That was not realy a fight. :uhoh:
Perhaps he switched into another animal, before he died. Who knows~.

Indeed it was.
It just feels so weird not to have November 11 around. Especially when you're pumped up for the second season & can't wait to see old characters return....and then you realize some of them won't be showing up, ever again :(
Now who's going to tell lame jokes to people?

Yeah it's such a shame. He was easily my favorite part of the first series, and it was such a shame for him to die. :(
I just rewatch the first season for my November 11 fix.
Along with November, I'll miss Huang. He might have been a dick for most of the series, but you had to respect the way he died.

Yeah, one of the things that Darker than Black manages to do better than most series I see for most of the fans watching it is managing to get everyone to empathize with almost all the main characters...
Examples are Huang, Mao, November 11, and maybe even April. We even got people worrying that Yin is already dead!
I digress, but it just shows though that this series is not playing around. No one is safe from death except perhaps Hei and Misaki (Main, main characters can never die), and maybe now Suo.

Yeah she seems to be leaking that "I'm not gonna die!" aura.
I'm going to miss April too.
Maybe Mao transfers into the flying squirrel. That would be a good way to keep tabs on Suou.
I like Season 2's music so far.

I have a few cliche ideas actually
1) she becomes a pseudo contractor like Hei. In other words, she receives her power from her twin who dies is some kind of accident.
2) Hei dies and passes on his powers to her somehow.

2) Hei dies and passes on his powers to her somehow.
This idea actually appeals to me, but only if she also inherits his costume and a split Hei personality. Cute Russian girl by day, The Goddamn Batman by night.
Of course, I'd rather him stay alive and continue kicking ass. Suou can be his morality pet, with a side of badass normal if she ever puts a sniper rifle to use.

as i remember, hei is a contractor by proxi from his sister giving him her powers. so his case might be special. Also, the thing about contractor not having feelings might be a myth normal humans have made up, in the first season it seemed to me that many of the contractors had feelings. It is probably that normal humand consider them without feelings because they don't have respect for human life because of their powers. IT also could be contractor themselve want to think of themselve as not having feelings because of the things they do.
Yeah, Hei was a normal human, his sister Xing was the contractor, and she transferred her powers/spirit/essence (kinda cryptic on this) into him. This is probably why he does not have to pay remuneration. You'll recall that once a contractor loses his body, as in the case of Mao and the contractor from the detective episode, they no longer have to pay remuneration. It isn't the same, but it seems that remuneration is connected to the body, not the ability.
I agree about the emotional aspect. It's not that contractors have no emotions, it's just that it's constantly held in check by their rational brain. A contractor can feel anger, but won't seek vengence, as it serves no rational purpose. I think this is why all the contractors are portrayed in a very understated way, you never see any of them go "over the top".
As much as I'd like to see Mao again, I don't think that was him in the first episode. They certainly made it clear they're not afraid to kill off beloved characters heh. It would be interesting though, I mean for him to come back, he'd either have to be working for the Syndicate again, or some group with similar resources that could download to his brain.
I'm sure we'll see some of the other characters eventually. It was mentioned that Suou's mother is in Japan, so I'm sure they'll be heading there eventually, specially with the fragment.
Hei definitely seems much more brutal. At the end of season 1 he did tell Misaki "Li no longer exists", but this is far beyond that declaration.

New sig get! Thanks mikoo!
As for the first episode and how it played out, it's a definite improvement over the first season with the typical journalist+Hei's Group+police thing. Seriously. That format is an EXTREME anime cliche nowadays. The journalist, the group, the law enforcement. Been there, done that, and it was almost following that exact formula to the very end. Still a very good watch, but the second half of the first series seemed to drag its feet for melancholy and mood (ironic, considering contractors don't have feelings..). But this time, the action moved the pace. Not the mood alone. I just hope the anime studio has learned its lesson and moves the story forward and ditch the old cliches.
that guy is Hei? it look like he is bad guy for this entrance....

Shikkoku no Hana is the sequel to the first anime and a prequel to this one. Or, it's suppose to be.

I, too, believe that people should drop the flavor lore aspect regarding contractors' emotions. All the definitions given in S1 regarding dolls and contractors were merely people and authorities stereotyping a new race or species.
Okay, a few questions:
Is August 7 (why not 8? :heh:) an MI6 agent, or FSB? I read a post here a few pages back that he was from FSB, though his code name suggests that he's from MI6 (could be a double agent too). Anyway, here's hoping he'll leave an impact similar to November 11 by the end.
Who are these guys (the ones tapping on the MI6 line)? The preview suggests that they're from the FSB, though they could be from the Syndicate too.

No the guys fired shots but we weren't shown where and we weren't shown a dead animal carcas unlike the cat. So you can't assume that the squirrel died imo.
If the kids were the targets, then firing a shot into a kid's bedroom would not be a good thing to do imo esp since one of them is considered still to be human.
just what I was gonna say, they shot at the squirrel, but nothing to say the squirrel was actually hit. If it was mao its safe to say he didnt get hit.
But since one was a contractor, and the other knew about it they would have erased her memory anyway, and since theyre twins they would have had to erase her WHOLE memory as they grew up together, even from before shion was a contractor, otherwise she would get suspicious, its a whole lot simpler for the FSB just to kill her too

Ho ho, wanna play Battler eh?
Three FSB personnel entered the room.
No other person was inside aside from the three mentioned above.
The cage was knocked down and broken by the first person (Soldier A) to enter.
As can be inferred from the gunshots, at least half a clip was emptied onto the debris at a range of at most 1.5 meters.
Now, a few educated assumptions:
Since the mission was carried out by the FSB, it is highly likely that the troops used are from the Spetsnaz GRU -- the best trained units of the Armed forces of the Russian Federation.
Judging from Soldier A's reaction, we can assume that their mission was to recover the contractor Shion and terminate all possible threats.
The noise caused by the breaking cage and subsequent movement by the squirrel has been automatically identified as a threat, and is marked for elimination.
Taking into account the skill and reaction time of your average Spetsnaz soldier and the amount of ammunition used, I am fairly confident that the squirrel was killed.
This is further evidenced by the fact that there was no sound of breaking glass (the impact sound was relatively uniform, albeit a bit drowned out), hinting that the salvo was concentrated on one general area -- the squirrel was not able to run and flee, or at least it tried and was immediately stopped.
But then if it was Mao, then it is 100% safe to assume that the squirrel was able to miraculously flee from a trained Spetsnaz soldier's salvo, somehow managed to transfer to his cat body, and then after getting shot by April transferred again to the squirrel off-screen.
And regarding the issue why Shion asked Suou to change into his clothes... it's basically to lead the FSB (and even MI6 and others) away from Shion, using Suou as the decoy. And as we already saw, it worked on April and then it even worked on Hei (since he is after the meteor fragment, we can assume that he is effectively looking for Shion, as he's the one that's significantly associated with it as of this episode). This leads me to believe that the FSB may not know who is who, and may even think Shion/Suou are one and the same. The reason why they did not take action earlier may be because they had not found out about Shion before, since he was dormant and basically sealed away in his secret room. Hei, however, was already tracking April since the start of the ep so he may have gotten some inside information (from Yin hopefully :)).

I salute your battler-esque deductive skills Ice Block

You're not Beatrice or Ronove and this isn't Umineko so the Red Truth doesn't count. :p
The cat could have been released as a distraction for the FSB guy and not be "Mao". "Mao" could have already transferred into the squirrel the day before via that window scene if that was really "Mao". Cats with bell collars is not a rare thing. Also, that squirrel is prob a mascot for the second series. It even has a character post on the official website (http://www.d-black.net/chara/index.html).
Also, the clothes switch could have been to assure Suou's safety. Primary targets were the father and Shion. Shion still needs Suou so he asked her to do a clothes switch. She is also carrying a part of the meteor fragment (as a necklace) which someone said earlier is an amplifier of contractor's abilities. She prob hasn't awakened yet imo.
Shion already knew that the FSB was coming also. He was long gone. Dad wasn't needed anymore apparently.
DtB2 poster (http://www.d-black.net/index.html) does feature a sniper Suou with contractor eyes so it's only a matter of time imo.
A really great start. Lot's of stuff nappened and you guys already mentione most of it.
There's no guartnee that cat was Mao btw. I mean he wouldn't jum a contractor. And Mao knew about April. Unlike Hey Mao was thinking rationally for the most part and he always considered all the options. I doubt jumping in front of an armed prson is conisdered rational especially from a contractor's point of view. It was probably just a cat.
But who knows?
And on the other hand Hey really seemed like a bad guy in this epiosde. And the way he was looking at the end of the episode - he could kill someone only with that look XD
I agree about the clothes swith thing but it seems Shion only wanted to escape and didn't really care about the meteor fragment since he gave part of it to Suou....maybe to be a more convincing decoy?
And that Tanya girl...she was featured as one of the new characters so I think she still has a major role to play.
I guess it will be really intense since it will only be 12 episodes....but come on it's DtB after all. Can't complain at all from what was shown in this episode - it started off with a really interesting plot.
Oh and the music rocked ^^

So it's really going to be 12 episodes?
Well I can't say I'm really surprised; take away the non-main plot episodes from S1 and it'd probably be about 12 episodes too. Since S2 is just going to be one long plot instead of arcs, it figures.
So it's really going to be 12 episodes?
12 episodes and 4 OVA's or so I heard.

I'll play batter.
In my opinion, watching the anime, I didn't see the squirrel get shot and killed, and if you don't see it happen, you cannot assume the squirrel is dead. You can show all your evidence, but if you didn't see the squirrel get pulverized, then don't assume it's dead; especially since this is a fiction story.
And plus, this is Bones.
this seems to be getting rather convoluted, either;
A. squirrel is mao, therefor its 100% he was not shot
or
B. Squirrel wasn't mao, therefore why do we even care if it was shot?

Nice one, but you're missing an important thing:
Why the heck would the soldiers shoot on a squirrel? I mean even if they know about contractors able to swithc bodies.
I think they shot in a general direction and we didn't hear the sound of breaking glass or else, because it's anime. It's made by people who tend to do mistakes. And because it's anime Mao can perfectly survive it thanks to his plot-armor even if they aimed at him. Not to mention we don't even know:
-If Mao is alive after the happenings of first season
-If Mao is still working with Hei(If he survived). For a contractor joining up with somone who made enemy with the whole world is a certainly irrational choice.
-If Mao transfered himself into the squirrel. Or he was ever inside that cat(the one got shot in the end)...
In short it's rather pointless debate...Beato would be seriously bored by it.:D

Though that moment really didn't felt like DtB :heh:
And from what I remember didn't Mao was with all the dead guys in what Hei saw. So isn't he dead? I mean everyone else there was dead so why should he be alive? He lost his mind when he got too close to the Hell's gate and he reverted back to a cat.
I'm really 99.9% sure he was with Amber Bai and the rest so I do think he died in the first sseason.

That's the question, isn't it. A lot of people have discussed this after s1, ep 25 ended. I for one say he died, but here's a theroy. Only a theroy!
Mao had connected into the Syndicate's server and got info on the Doll situation. When Mao twitched, it was because the Syndicate disconnected his link. In doing so, he lost his control on the cat's mind and it took over. (Like he had stated to Hei when he was tailing Gai and the cat took over.)
However, if everybody at the end were dead, then if Mao did die, why was he there. More to the point, why was Hei there as well?
Maybe it was all Amber's doing, maybe messing with his mind some how, or it could have been the meteor shard.
the 2nd half of the eps is so good, the excellent bg music, and the idea of the falling stars is cool too

- From official sources (including the site), August 7 is a MI6 operative.
- As for the two, the left guy's Genma Shizume and the right's Mina Hazuki. Both are secret agents for the Third Chief Clerk in the 2nd Investigative Division of the Statistics Bureau of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. (PS - Not sure on the current structure of the MIAC) The ministry works as a sort of interior department/ministry in other parts of the world. I'm still thinking why can't they work for the PSIA.
And for their powers.
Genma's contract can turn him into a walking suit of hardened armor that even the best of small arms can't kill him. He uses budo when fighting.
As for Mina, she's good in wetworks and wears a half-faced balaclava that covers her mouth. Her contract can turn anything she touches into a bladed weapon. During a fight, Mina uses a katana.

Yes, you must. It's not just knowing about what the characters, like Hei and what is special about him, are like; but a little more insite on the gates and how they are linked, the meteor shard, what dolls are, what contractors are, what the Tokyo Explotion is and who caused it and why, etc...
And it's just a great anime to watch.
but this season main looks like Suou
I think Hei appears to be a main focus still along with the twins. What is his connection with them, and why did he change so much? That's what I want to know. But you'd have to watch the first season to see how much he's changed.

Well Hei was there cause Amber sent him there with the power of the meteor fragment(I think). But then again when that thing activated all contractors should have died and gone to the same place including Hei. This would explain why Mao was there (there weren't only contractors there) But after their little talk Amber did send Hei back in time just before that thing fired. Thus contractors survived and if Mao was still alive he would have gone back like Hei did. But of course that's only speculation.
I don't really like the idea of a pedo Mao squirrel though :heh:

Maybe we'll get a flashback to see why Hei is so angry and dead serious. He wasn't like this even when he was on a killing sprea in season one. Also maybe the flashback will explain the lack of Yin in this episode.
April smiled at an observation apparition(or however it was called) but didn't yin's one evolved to look like a human. Sure she could still be able to make those but there's no guarantee that that one was hers.
I hope she's ok and at home watching TV and we won't get a flashback of someone shooting her. (since there were a lot of speculation about that)
we get moar than a flashback, as someone said earlier there will be 4 ovas bundled with the dvd releases of this season that will be about what happened between end of season 1 and start of season 2.

It really feels like I'm the only one here who don't REALLY worry over whether Yin's dead or not. She great and all, but if that's how the plot goes then so be it. It's not like it's the first time a super cool and awesome character in DtB died. And also, no need to crucify Suou because she is not all GRIM DARK MUST KILL EVERYBODY, yet. I'm pretty sure she'll go towards that direction as the series progress.

Yin is not listed on D.black official site (yet), but, that was her voice during the preview for the next episode.
The OVA's will be released with the DVD. The first DVD will contain the first two episodes, so we won't see the first OVA till Jan 27, 2010 with the third episode.
We need a sub-forum really bad.:(

Indeed it sounds like her but there's no guarantee she'll be there. She'll be in the OVAs for sure thus they could use her voice. And she hasn't been shown once neither in the preview for the next episode nor in the trailers or teasers. Not that there were many things shown in there.
Naah too much speculation and thinking without any proof.
I see. So we'll have to wait a lot for the OVAs. I mean DtB will be over by January.
And the way it's going they'll probably cover the blanks between the Ryuusei no Gemini manga and the second season.
And we do indeed need a subforum and fast :D
I noticed on the official D-black character list that all the characters listed have appeared in epiosde 1 and the preview of episode 2, (with the exception of misaki, she appears in the 3rd episode if the summaries are to be believed.) even the characters that only got seconds of screen time were listed. so unless they aren't goning to introduce ANY more characters after the first three episodes the official list may be deliberately incomplete.
Honestly, at the beginning I had thoughts whether or not to watch this sequel, given that two years ago I was only able to watch the first 10 episodes of the first series.
Thankfully, I was able to catch up to what happened for the rest of the first series by reading Omni's episode synopses, however, it didn't feel the same.
All I got to say about the first episode is that I'm very glad how BONES opened up the second season. They did not follow the traditional formula about reintroducing many of the main characters of the previous cast from season one. Instead, they introduced to the viewers the main protagonists for this sequel and properly fleshed them out.
Right now by far Suou's a likeable character, albeit drawn unwillingly amidst a sea of hell with the coming war.
For those who watched the first season entirely I need to answer me some doubts.
For the first season, I learned that Contractors do not heed or pay allegiances to the agencies and employers that recruit them. They're concerned about the survival of their own existence as a need.
My knowledge for this one is rather incomplete. Contractors have to pay remuneration after or for using their powers. What happens then after they pay all of their remuneration?
Anything else to a Contractor is unnecessary or unneeded, including all kinds of human emotions that lack an objective base.
How come April actually displayed emotions to a certain degree in an un-Contractorish behavior in the second season's first episode, in contrast to her Contract personality from season one?
Even Contractor Tanya felt like pissed off when Nika stood in her way when there was no threat to her existence?
Unless I might be wrong, and Contractors also have a need or use to fulfill their assigned objectives.
I'm very glad I've picked up this sequel, since I won't be getting myself spoiled for the time being, and it pleases the most that Abingdon Boys School is performing, at least the ED song.

In episode 25, Amber had said Contractors are evolving. They have emotions, but they usually don't act on irrational behavior. However, in ep 24, VI952, Wei, acted on his pride, feeling ashamed at being defeated in ep 10 by Hei, and fought Hei again. That was irrational, but he still acted on his emotions.
To get April's behavior, and Tanya's, along with the other Contractors, you might want to finish watching the 1st season. Funimation has uploaded a lot of the first season on You-tube, and some on their Video site.
You're not the only one. Actually a part of me hopes that she's dead. Unless she can emote, think and act independently and defend herself, I think that she won't be very useful now that there really isn't a team to protect her. I just don't think that it's realistic for her to survive very long on the run. We also need a reason for Hei to act the way he is.
The show has made it a point so far to kill off the left over season 1 characters rather efficiently. Moe v. 1 (Yin) is outdated. Moe v.2 (Suou) is more inline with otaku tastes imo.

but, but, but, but...I'm just human D: I need moeerrr Yin :upset::upset::upset:
Suou seems like she will end up being a good character. Goodnatured girl gets caught up in a darker world angle, I have always enjoyed that.
I was wondering where Hei was the entire episode. Those hints of him were killer, I thoought he might not show up.
Im not really sad at the lack of Yin, good character, but she never felt like a central point of the story. Would like to see her make an appearance, but first id like to see story progression with the characters presented now so it doesnt get too confusing.

Haha, what main characters from the first season? About 95% of them are dead
Speaking of which, I seriously hope this series does not follow the formula that the first one followed. I've grown incredibly wary of getting attached to any character they introduce... since I'm afraid they'll just kill off him/her. Hard, since Suou is so likable.

Second season will be continuous, so chances are good that Suou and Hei at least will survive until the last episode (and by then all bets are off; people die in DtB).

They were ice particles rather than rain. Burger guy sorta killed himself because he was in super speed. The moment he was in the path of the ice particles, they became lethal projectiles...yea something like that :p

yeh but it was cold (snow everywhere) and the water could've frozen...especially since it was coming from high up in the sky (even colder)
The question is, was it intentional? Coincidence? Or because he was too stupid? Personally I liked his character and his ability was powerful imo.

More like, he was cocky. He knew he could dodge April's bullets with ease, and it looks like he didn't know much about her ability. It was just complete underestimation on his part, and the look on his face when he's going superspeed and he sees the rain droplets in front of him says all.

Well his ability wasn't that powerful. If his reaction time was up to par with his super speed then he wouldn't have run into a tree and he would've kill April on his first pass rather than miss killing her when running by at super speed. Super speed without super reflexes is good, but not that great. The rain fell just as he was starting up his super speed so he got unlucky too. He should've just used a gun or something.

I think he was just toying around with her--or maybe he needed her alive? Either way, he could easily have incapacitated her early on, just by charging in and striking her down. Judging by how a water droplets punched through his flesh simply due to inertia alone, just sticking a hand out would probably have knocked the fuck out of April.
And maybe it would've fucked his arm up. :D Either way, it all goes down to his ego. He didn't think his opponent had anything that could be used against him.

I think it's pretty obvious the water droplets crystallized into ice just a split moment before Goran ran into them. If you watched carefully, there's a slight soundcue of icing and the droplets seemed to harden into a shape. That's why Goran was surprised right before they hit him. Or maybe in another thought, maybe it was just the sound of concentrated droplets.. I think people have a point in that icing things isn't quite her power. I sorta think that fight ending like that was a bit too sudden, literally and figuratively.
Also, it makes absolutely no sense why simple water droplets that were flying around in the fight would kill him. Also no sense how simple water kill like that. But I guess it sorta did.
He's running faster than a bullet, thus everything he touches hits him at a speed faster than a bullet. Speed is relative: there's no difference between shooting someone with a bullet and having him run at such a speed into a stationary bullet. And yes, a drop of water moving fast enough would probably put a hole in you.
The problem of course, is that by bringing real physics into the matter, you're forced to ask how he can move that fast without the air killing him.
Edit: A brief search of wikipedia yielded:
Ultra high pressure water jet cutters are used to cut a wide variety of materials including granite, concrete (see hydrodemolition),ceramics, fabric and even Kevlar.[7] One such cutter delivers 55,000 psi (380 MPa) through a nozzle 0.003 inch (8 micrometres) in diameter at 1 kilometre per second. This can cut a person in half at close range. There are reports of accidental deaths involving the industrial use of high-pressure water.[8]

Yeah. I have to agree with that now. And yeah, powers having adverse affects to the characters in a real life setting has always been a problem in anything that presents itself as realistic while having superpowers. Like how Superman going faster than a bullet wouldn't shred the people he's saving into shreds. :heh:

I was wondering when anyone will bring up that death. Surprisingly very few raised any question as to how that contractor died. I absolutely agree with your assessment that the falling raindrops hit his face like a bullet due to that extreme speed he was moving at. A bullet travels around 1800 mph and he was able to dodge em'. It gives us an idea how fast he was moving. If a feather hits his face at that speed, he will have nasty gash. No wonder the water drops penetrated his body like bullets when he ran into those droplets at that speed.
Another fun fact that may shed light to the contractor's particular death: People who committed suicide from jumping off the San Franciso bridge, they died from internal hemmorage, head, or the chest cavity ripped open, and etc... Hitting the water surface from that altitude is equivalent to hitting concretes. Their bodies pretty much turned into mush.

dont even TRY to bring science into the flash. He has a cosmic treadmill that lets him run through time..
Also probably a good idea not to bring physics into this either, as neither water droplets or ice of that size could do that amount of damage to him. With the water droplets, yes the basic theory of kinetic energy holds true hitting a raindrop (~1gram) at 1600mph (715.2ms^-1) would give the resultant drop energy of 255j. In a paper on skin penetration assessment written in 2005 by wayne state university it was concluded that skin could be penetrated with as little as 52jcm^-2, now given the raindrops area of 0.25cm^2, it would impact with the force of ~900jcm^-2, easily enough to penetrate the skin, even assuming he has some kind of toughened body, as accelerating from 0 to 715ms^-1 in an instant would turn his organs to mush otherwise. frozen droplets would hit with less force as when water freezes it expands, but still enough to penetrate the skin. However that is not the issue here as its all a question of the pressure of the water, the surface tension and viscosity of the liquid, (structural integrity and toughness for ice) they would simply splash harmlessly off of his skin, the ice being tougher would probably leave a small cut before shattering, but nothing more than a graze. If you think logically, when aircraft go supersonic they do not suffer any kind of damage from rain either, admittedly humans are more squishy then aircraft, but the principal holds. sorry for geeking it up, physics major :heh:
Really nice avas. Can I use them at some point ?
Wait not only Yin...Hei is also alive. All characters are alive until they're shown dead. And eve that doesn't always guarantee it :heh:
And about that guy's death - it was explained well enough but either way. Rain dropts crystalyze when the air is cold. So basically you get something like a mini Hailstorm. And that hurts even when you're not moving faster than the speed of sound. Water cuts everything it's just a matter of speed and the angle. There are cases where a car is sliced in two by a plain wooden board due to those tow things. So there you have it ^^
And about aircraf...they're way more durable than humans. Still ducks sometimse crash into plains and do a lot of damage even with subsonic speed. But who cares actually. I mean he crashed into a tree with something like the speed of sound and both him and the tree were ok. So again it's just an anime. He got cought up in lots of tine ice drops that cut his arms and stuff lost contorl hit a rock (we didn't see that) and presto XD
Edit: oh and other point - plains do fly above the clouds where ther's no rain to avoid such things. And I've never heard of ones flying supersonic under the clouds in something like a hailstorm. That would be deadly even for them....probably?

Yea, it was posted a few pages back as well. I realllieee hope it's official (so at least we know they've done work on her!).
The three kanji characters say something like: Yin. Winter sleep/hibernation? [romaji: In. Toumin?]
It retains its meaning even when directly read in Chinese pinyin: Yin. Dong mian?
Yin? Hibernation? Winter sleep???
someone please tell me I'm wrong and that there's a non-literal meaning
:upset::upset:
I'd love to say it but there's no official info on that so it will be just me guessing. Well if the Ovas do indeed take place before the events in the s2 and after the events in the manga Yin would have to be in Russia as well I suppose. So they could have a rough design on her.
But it kind of looks too messy for an offical art. Thy usually have less lines.

To make Yin fans less worried about her status, how about we assume that the winter's too cold for our little Yin to see outside without tripping at every snow piles (no water to see from....). So Hei have to find her an hideout to hide her during mission, and then lack of Yin (or worried for her status) making him unable to sleep + eat well --> Hobo Hei

Yin is blind? Wow, I never picked that up from the first season, I feel really unobservant now.

The three kanji characters say something like: Yin. Winter sleep/hibernation? [romaji: In. Toumin?] ...someone please tell me I'm wrong and that there's a non-literal meaning :upset::upset:Okay. Actually, the last two kanji say "winter clothing (冬服 fuyufuku)," not "winter sleep (冬眠 toumin)."

It was hinted at during her arc, somewhere episode 13-14ish, I believe.

It wasn't exactly hinted at, they tell you right off the bat during her flashback playing the piano.
Doesnt say she is blind, just that she has some kind of vision problem that impairs her sight (might be totally blind, it doesnt go in to detail).

I want to say 1 thing on Goran's death. Lets have the Mythbusters try that 1 out! :D
As for Yin,you can tell through the anime she is blind. Hei some times even guided her around places. She has good sense of direction whenever Spectres are present, as she had done when that Russian guy was using hers to drawl her to him, or when the Doll concerning the Yakuza episodes was communicating with Yin.
Doesnt say she is blind, just that she has some kind of vision problem that impairs her sight (might be totally blind, it doesnt go in to detail).
You can tell by the way her eyes never focus on anything that she's blind. She doesn't really look at people while talking to them, etc etc.

I always thought that was more of a characteristic of her being a doll than being blind, going back to the idea that dolls aren't supposed to show any emotion or such. I had picked up that she seemed to have some sight problems but since I never saw her walk into a building I never thought she was totally blind. Wonder if she can use the snow to see, it's water isn't it.

Hm, dunno about this first episode.
From the first season, with no expectations, it blew my out of my seat with the first episode.
The opening , the setting. The atmosphere was really from the genre noir (though i was disappointed that this wasn't consistent over the series).
The last part of this episode was good.
But MAO died, lol, just out of nothing. ( i wonder if he could have switched his body or whatever...)
But glad too see that Hei is still the ruthless killer.
He really looks like a Hobo.

A hostage situation might work out. It'd certainly explain his desperation, and the general bum look he has. He's racing against time, and has no room in his schedule for things like shaving, changing clothes, or taking a shower.

I believe it was stated that Hei's powers just barely scratch the surface of what his sister could do--didn't she cause the Heaven's Gate incident? She had to take a nap after killing shit, but it looked like--from the south american flashbacks--she just killed people dozen at a time, unlike Hei.

Amber told Hei at the end, "You should have noticed by now... Electricity is just the tip of Bai's power. Her true power is something that you should know better than anyone."
So he is just as capable of using all her power (and did). And I'm sure if Hei was standing in a lake, he could electrify just as many people.
If anything, he has an advantage with his wire and not having to pay a price. :)

Darker than Black: Jet Black Flower manga is still ongoing, and so far only 6 chapters has been scanlated. We have to wait. It's made by Yuji Iwahara - who is also character designer for both series of DtB. It probably means that manga is a "canon".
Regarding deaths of some DtB characters... IMHO it's a good way to show how dark this series is. People are dying from the first episode, not a random characters - but well know one. In first series 2 episodes were needed to introduce that girl/doll so her death could has emotional impact.
Also authors could get rid of characters not important to the story anymore, but important for fans. Cause they're dead fans can't demand their reapperance. Cruel but effective way to make place for new characters.
I'm sorry if I'm repeating something written already, I haven't enough time to read all posts.

Not only that...his electro-reactive bulletproof jacket and perhaps his molecule-altering ability. Plus the skills of a trained assaissin capable defeating contractors even as mere human.
As usual...the protagonist is the most OP-ed.:)
Now I am intersted how Hei's going to turn out in the story. It seems he's an antagonistical figure at the start. And it's a good thing Misaki didn't gave up chasing Hei...we want more of her too.:)

Can't say I liked Hei that much before, but gotta love him now (because of how funny he looks).
Bai was way more powerful than Hei could ever hope to be since he somehow inherited her poweres but can't really use them since he's not a genuine contraccotr (that should be explained one of these days). That's why he doesn't have to do anything after using his powers. I mean when she went out it was like metheor shower out there. XD Somewah similar to the sky in s2 with all those stars falling. She was unstopable since her powers were kinda godlike. After she did activate Heaven's gate and wiped half a continent. Even Hei was kind of afraid of her and at some point he was even thinking of killing her (As far as I remember he was going to trey while she was sleeping but he's a kind brother after all)
Hei is in the middle of nowhere. I mean it's the tundra and he's on the run. You can't expect him to go shave and stuff like that. He's a busy man XD.
And not really sure if this should go here but any idea when Stereopony's OP single will be out?

That's because people were in the water. In the mist of ep 25, Amber used the meteor shard on Hei to, in my belief, make Hell's Gate disappeared with everybody around like Bai had done. However, Amber turned back the clock so Hei could melt the Saturn Ring to nothing.
Spoiler for Might be a spoiler for season one (?):

It does not matter if he has a price or not. He can use Bai's power just like she can and he doesn't have to pay for it. That's what makes Hei so unique. Hei can kill dozen of people in one shot as long as he has something, (like water,) to use as a source to connect each person. If the emenys are holding hands he could kill them by touching only one person.

Hei could use the powers just like Bai used them at Heavens Gate. Why do you think Amber wanted him to begin with. She wanted him to cause the same thing that happened in S.America, in Tokyo.
Hei was against it, and instead used Bai's power to destroy the ring.
Again, he is as strong, if not stronger than her because he has no price, his weapons and abilities, and coat.
Well that's not how I rememer things. I mean if I remember correctly it was mentioned that Hei could only use part of Bai's power. Thus I assume he's weaker. He indeed could kill people in water but at no point was it mentioned that Bai used electricity. We asume that cause Hei uses that but than again that's not Bai's true power so she could be killing them in other ways as well. (Btw if you're in the water won't you electrecute yourself as well? Or are contractors imune to theiir own element power cause I doubdt that. And Bai was in a lake she would have killed herself as well if she used something like that...that's agan making asumptions though)
True he mangeded to use those particles at the end but you'r not seeing him those kinds of things all the time. In fact for the most part he usesthe skills he got while he wasn't a contractor and just usese electricity as a faster way to kill someone. I mean one he has that cord around your neck you're probably dead either way. As such I don't think he's using the full potential of his sister's power. So my theory was that since he uses his power "for free" means it's not as storn as it was in it's original form. That still makes Hei a big badass that could kill without a problem but I still don't think he was stronger than her.
Either way we have no clear evidence of all those things so they're just speculations ^^
And I think Amber wanted Hei to be happy and be with her among other things. It wasn't about the gate or at least that wasn't the only thing
Hei inherited one of Bai's many powers as a contractor. Bai is is technically stronger than Hei. However, Bai has to pay renumeration, giving her a weakness, in contrast to Hei, who virtually has no such weakness.

Hei or Bai wouldn't have harm themselves, or Contractors that have the same ability, like Nick. If you recall, Nick tried to kill Hei with his ability, but since Hei has the same power it didn't work.
And even though we didn't see it, but at the end ep 2 of s1, Hei stepped into the water to finish off that Contractor.
Hei inherited one of Bai's many powers as a contractor. Bai is is technically stronger than Hei. However, Bai has to pay renumeration, giving her a weakness, in contrast to Hei, who virtually has no such weakness.
Hei didn't inherit one of Bai's powers, he got it all since she is in him, like Amber had said and had pointed out to Hei in ep 16 and ep. 25. He can do what Bai can do, if not better.

He doesn't know how, though. It was only with a meteor shard that Bai's power, latent inside him, was awakened; for all practical purposes, he's the electric chinaman, nothing more, nothing less.

Well yes that something similar to what I remember but I think Bai's powere conpensated for her weakness. Since her renumeration was to sleep (I think) you could say that that was a rpetty big one but she was said to be the meanest of all contractors so presumably by the time it comes to give her rem. there's not a single person alive around XD But Hei can only use one thing for now and the particle manipulation which he did once
Aha I see I remember that one but maybe that was just because Hei is special. And the moment with the water was one where we couldn't tell what he actually did. It does indeed make sense to be imune to your own power but doesn't that kind of make you super strong in some cases. Like if you control fire you can't get burned and with electricity you can't get shocked. And that includes all sources...seems way overpowered with some abilities but as I said it does make sense. Good point^^

I won't disagree with you about her true power awaking after what Amber did, but it has always been there. Remember, in ep 22, when he was pissed off at Amber, it caused him to make the whole building highlight in blue. So even if he didn't know, it was there. Like you had stated, Amber told him it was always there.
If he was merely an electric Chinaman, then he wouldn't have changed the molecules in the Saturn system, like Dr. Schrader had said before he got his face knocked in.

I don't think Misaki even knows. She was just as surprised as us. I believe it had something to do with the Gate (unexplained things happen in there), or it could have been Amber.
Episode 2:
- Hei demands the meteor fragment that Suou has. He tries to stop her from escaping but Mina Hazuki from Japan Internal Affairs fights him.
- At Mao's urging (which seems to come from nowhere), Suou makes her escape.
- She runs into Genma Shizume of Internal Affairs. But before he can retrieve her, Suou's pet squirrel causes a distraction and they escape. She sees Shion from afar wearing her clothes leaving the area.
- Mina Hazuki loses track of Hei and she and Genma leave the area. Before they do, she kisses both him and their handler (her renumeration).
- Suou looks up her friend Sasha but the girl doesn't remember her at all.
- Nika escapes from hospital after his injuries by Tania from the FSB. He runs into Suou but he remembers her. They both hide in a cabin but Suou decides to take action.
- A blonde woman and a man named Mr. Smith meet in presumably Cairo.
- Hei meets up with a contact from the CIA.
- Later Hei finds Suou pinning up a poster. He demands the meteor fragment again. Suou recognizes Hei as a contractor. When Hei searches Suou's body for the fragment, she screams "pervert" "sicko" to his surprise. She says something that makes Hei remember Yin.
- The FSB and MI6 converge in the area arriving to retrieve Suou. Both sides fight one another and Hei grabs Suou to safety. August 7 goes after them while Genma Shizume arrives in a golem armor form annihilating the FSB forces.
- August 7 arrives to take Suou. He can manifest weapons at will, brandishing sabers and automatic weapons. Hei shocks August 7 and is about to deliver the final blow when he is trapped in a field generated by some hovering devices.
- Suou runs into the field and witnesses Hei's flashback with Yin saying goodbye to him while he runs toward her. Meanwhile, Hei wrenches in pain from the field.
- Misaki Kirihara watches Hei's star through a telescope and notices his star fading.
Ending animation this episode is different from the first, with Russian words and the characters pondering and lying around.

One MAJOR thing, when Hei gets caught in this trap set by the wire tapping girl from last ep, the meteor fragment reacts with him and gives him a scene with Yin. She's saying sayonara, or some sort. Ep ends with Misaki noticing BK201's star shining again or was it fading, yeah.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm
so now they're hinting that maybe Hei is or is not a true contractor. Maybe he's half a contractor?

True, true. It's just that they're still teasing about whether it's 100% true or not. At this point, it seems to point to something.. greyer.
I lol'd when I saw Pecha sitting in the empty bottle(or what does it called?) of stew. %)
Oh god. Episode 2 is awesome. With the animation, now I'm in love with the new OP.
- After the accident, Shion becomes a contractor at a cost of not being able to walk.
- Most of Suou's friends are brainwashed. Nobody can remember Suou.
- Dr. Pavlichenko is died before Hei's arrival.
- Hei was saved by CIA after a certain event and have to work with them in exchange.
- "Marriage fraud! This bastard trick my sister. Please contact if you found this bastard." :heh:
- I would be surprise if Yin is still alive, from what they implied in this episode.
- Misaki noticing BK201's star has faded after he was trapped.

Another really good episode. Though... Mm... Probably because it is only one cour, but the amount of throw-away characters... And as always, throw-away prices. No tension... Woopie, kiss! Magician trick blabbering! Okay, kill them.
...
And in just three years... the setting is pretty... out-of-there now. When did the Genphion or whatever Disturber from Code Geass get imported...
Oh, and golem. :heh: The staff is definitely doing all they want.
But it was still interesting and all.
Hei's hobo-ness and molesting of Suou earned a great laugh. :heh:
...Sasha-chan!!!!!!!!
:( Her memory got deleted... Maybe there won't be any more appearance time for her...
The OP and ED both have signs that Suou will become a contractor (those eyes...), but then at times, it looks like she doesn't...
Which...? I want to hurry up and know so I can decide if I should switch to taking Sasha...
Both OP and ED are good.

The music for the new OP is so unfitting to the scenario, grotesque. It really disgusts me.
Can't describe it better than this.
Well, i have to skip the OP in the future.
With DtB i will always associate the first OP and the following first words:
A night sky full of cries
Hearts filled with lies
The contract...
Is it worth the price?
A soul pledged to the darkness
Now I've lost it
I know I can kill
The truth exists beyond the gates
The opening song is a blast. The episode itself is very good. More questions are raised about the unique abilities Hei. The last bit after the ED was very interesting.
And I agree with Serenade... it seems like the animators are given a free reign with the story. It might take a bit before the story takes any form or shape because right now it seems like things are happening in chaotic fashion. Dieing has become very fashionable. "I'm a magician." Yes, you are. A dead a magician. :heh:
Btw, Hei is claiming the doctor was already dead by the time he got there. Oh, Serenade.... :heh::D
P.S. I'll be avidly following this thread coughforumcough avidly and spoilers that gives away future event in anime thread will be treated with ultimate disdain.

Btw, Hei is claiming the doctor was already dead by the time he got there. Oh, Serenade.... :heh::D
Hey, it was only a guess. :heh:
Anyways...
That's what they all say when they are accused.
Didn't like the OP and ED but I usually ignore those.

Do you mean if we speculate about the next episode?

OP is pretty cool.
There's so much Suou in it though. And Hei's walking away D;
.....and I still don't like the ED song, just the beginning of it.
So I guess hobo Hei is a keeper?
And yay for Yin....I guess lol.
Other than that, I'm waiting for subs ;)
Do you mean if we speculate about the next episode?
Speculation is alright in general, but there are also speculation based on the source material rather than what has been given in a particular episode. There is a list of exception in the Spoiler Policy (http://forums.animesuki.com/faq.php?faq=animesuki_faq#faq_spoilerpolicy), but be warned some of those exception don't apply to weekly episode discussion thread just because additional threads are created to allow those kinds of topic.

Ending is pretty good compared with the opening.
I mean, happily playing on the beach etc. ....Darker than Black?:heh::uhoh:
Well, can't stop Moe from gaining upperhand in this industry......:upset:
edit:
Does someone has the lyrics of the OP?
I am quite interested of what the song is about.....

Okay, so not only did I mistake July's observer for Yin, but this episode seems to indicate that she also died :heh: well, I guess I just need to hope for the best about her.
I really like the song for the opening, but I feel it doesn't sync well with the visuals. The ending on the other hand is very good (better than the last season's)
Episode was good from what I understood, but I'll have to wait for the subs to understand the rest of it.
Hei's hobo-ness and molesting of Suou earned a great laugh. :heh:
Episode 1: Getting groped by a squirrel
Episode 2: Molested by Hobo-Hei
Episode 3 prediction: Getting kissed by Ms. lightsaber
The girl's power apparently is being a magnet for weirdos
Btw, Hei is claiming the doctor was already dead by the time he got there.
Considering the electric sound during the scene, I don't think Hei is being truthful :heh:
P.S. I'll be avidly following this thread coughforumcough avidly and spoilers that gives away future event in anime thread will be treated with ultimate disdain.
Could it be?
Btw, that beach scene is supposed to contrast with what was, with what is. Notice Tanya, the girl that developed Contractor powers in with Suou's friends--it doesn't actually happen, it's more like Suou's fantasy as she gets ready for whatever she's going to do with that giant gun.

The OP is a decoy to have us all set aback.
I mean, happily playing on the beach etc. ....Darker than Black?:heh::uhoh:
I actually loved that part, it show how Suou has lost everything she had and can no longer turn back. It also plays a nice effect to emphasis the next Suou holding rifle scene, too.
Considering the electric sound during the scene, I don't think Hei is being truthful :heh:
Right on. Hei won't be given any benefit of the doubt until the mystery of "who else could have killed the Professor with familiar signature noise/voice other than Hei" is solved. We all know Hei is quite the killer himself. :heh: Serenade is off the hook. :D

I thought it was weird that Mina's voice is similar to Rossiu , then I realized both of them are voiced by Mitsuki Saiga.

I don't think Misaki even knows. She was just as surprised as us. I believe it had something to do with the Gate (unexplained things happen in there), or it could have been Amber.
I can possibly accept the Amber explanation IMO. The Gate, from what I've seen so far, does paranormal thingys. Not even going there for now. ;)
The OP was unlike the previous DtB.......

Awesome OP and ED. :) Seeing Hei in such unusual clothes at the end of the ED was a bit odd though. :heh: And I bet you anything Suou's going to be riding trains around, like the OP shows; with that big-@$$ rifle, there's no other way she could get around.
I do hope they go along with the story as Suou and Hei travelling together though, rather than pulling the "endless chase" thing. That'll be one pointless thing they don't need when they have plenty of stuff to cover in a 12 episode series. (supposedly 12, anyway; I don't think there's been an official announcement about the episode number?)
[crazy thoughts]
Still way too early to tell obviously, but I wonder if they really are going to go with the oyajixschool girl ending here.....not that Hei's an actual oyaji, which might mean it's more likely on the other hand. :heh:
[/crazy thoughts]
And yes, it's not looking too good for Yin-fans. Yin looks to be symbolified now, which only makes it look even more like she's really dead. But at least they're giving her plenty of screentime for someone who's not really there though, as opposed to suddenly saying out of nowhere "she's dead, Jim" after nmo mention of her at all. And it looks indeed like whatever happened to Yin is what brought about the birth of hobo-Hei.
Of course there's nothing truly saying she's dead, though. For all we know, she could have been kidnapped (possibly with a plan to make Hei think she's dead) and is being used to create some super-doll world-takeover army, is being brainwashed to run some supernatural world network, or Char Aznable picked her up for his harem.
But for the Yin shippers, they certainly are glorifying her in Hei's mind, almost to the point of symbolification even; maybe they really did have a romantic relationship sometime in these past two years before whatever happened to her. :heh:

Yes! Omni just made my day with the new blog post for episode 2 noting that among the voice cast credits for episode 2, the voice that told Shion to run away near the beginning of the episode belonged to Mao’s voice actor Sawaki Ikuya, and he’s listed in the credits as just 声 (voice). As speculated due to the appearance of the cat, while there's no totally definitive proof that it's definitely Pecha (Pescha?), the only thing and animal known to be with Suou during that escape sequence is Pecha who shows himself when he jumps on Genma's face when she's in trouble in the very next scene. Looks like Mao is back and managed to switch animals before the sad shooting of the awesome cat. :)
Hopefully they bring this out in the open soon so that Mao can interact again, and then we'll need more info on Yin.

Yeah, I'm starting to give up, the hopeless Yin fanboy that I am. I don't know, as long as there doesn't develop some weird romantic relationship between Suou and Hei, it's all good--DtB isn't about the romance, after all. That goes for that cow Kirihara, too.
It does look like, between seasons one and two, Yin really developed some social skills, and I think it's quite likely that something happened between Hei and Yin. I'm not saying it was necessarily romantic in nature--it could just be that Hei grew to appreciate her as a friend, not just a tool, although it's arguable that he already saw her as a friend, even before the end of season one. Who knows. She has death flags raising all around her, though. It's crazy, because one of the things I was looking forward to was Yin, but... oh well, DtB still kicks ass.
And the ED makes it look like she's alive! :heh:
Well Yin was what 17 and Hei was 21 in the first season? I just think Hei and Suou having that kind of relationship is a lot weirder. I think its definitely easy to see that he though of most of the people on his team as friends especially by the end of the last episode.

Why do the awesome people always die in a small 5 min fight? be like DBZ! 23456 Eps for 1 fight FTW!
Am loving the new OP, it adds a nice touch to the anime and suits it quite well if we consider that the new protagonist seems to be Suoh now ^^ I am a little perplexed at the Yin-scenes, though. I never expected her to be in some kind of danger or appear naked in Hei's mind (reminds me of Gundam Seed and 00 xD) ^^; The only thing in s2 that I am sad about is that there's no Amber anymore which is real depressing for an Amber-fan =_=

First off: Pecha survived. That 1 is down.
2nd: It doesn't look good concerning Yin. I wouldn't go so far as to say she is dead since we haven't seen what had happened. So for the Yin/Hei shippers, I wouldn't give up hope yet. Keep your heads up.
3rd thing: To me, is seems like Hei's power might have been stripped from him since his star disappeared.
And 3: Yay, Misaki! :D

this show deserves a full 26 episode series but seems its not gonna happen and so im dreading a lot of questions will remain unanswered in the end.
well i usually dont like making romantic links between serious characters (well Tieria is exceptional) but small talks and silent understanding between Hei and Yin were looking good and i'd really like to see them back.
i think it's totally out of question to bring hei and suou's romantic relationship here - that will be totally pedo-pervs!!! eewww

I really hope that if this season is a success- which likely it will considering the positive response from Japan and abroad- a third one will be made. That is of course, only if the second season still left some questions unanswered, I don't want DTB to become a cash cow franchise.
It's only 12 episodes? If so, I'll be watching for the lulz.
