The popular anime series, Darker Than Black, which is conceived by Okamura Tensai, now has a manga adaptation as well. The manga in question is the one that just started a month ago on Young GanGan, by Iwahara Yuuji, and the title is DARKER THAN BLACK -漆黒の花- (The pitch black flower).
It follows the events taking place after the first DtB anime series ended, and the art is quite faithful to the style of anime.

It's not revealed yet whether the story is related to the upcoming 2nd series yet. You can read the first chapter on their official webpage. http://www.square-enix.co.jp/magazine/yg/browsing/

The other manga adaptation from Noki Ya in Monthly Asuka ended a while back. His adaptation of the first series was heavily criticised for having bad artwork, doujin level adaptation of story, and personalities completely different from anime counterparts.

The synopsis in the following is stolen from wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darker_than_Black) for those who are new to the series:
Ten years ago, an inscrutable and abnormal territory known as Hell's Gate appeared in Tokyo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo), altering the sky and wreaking havoc on the landscape. The heavenly bodies disappeared, replaced by false stars. During this time, people who possess various special abilities emerged. Kept secret from the masses, these individuals, known as Contractors, are able to murder in cold blood. Various nations and organizations around the world use Contractors as spies and assassins, often resulting in violent battles for information. Each fake star has a corresponding Contractor, and they vibrate when their Contractor's power is being used. As such, Contractors are usually identified by their star's Messier catalogue number (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messier_object). However, their abilities are gained at the cost of their humanity. They are implied to lack human emotions which includes no aversions to murder, and they are regarded as extremely rational and logical in their decision making. Contractors are thus named because of their need to always complete a remuneration or payment each time their power is used (ex. eating flowers, breaking fingers, drinking blood). It is not entirely clear what happens to one if he or she fails to complete the remuneration. Contractors are described as being psychologically compelled to complete their remunerative task.

yes, the first manga was ..... a big mistake with shoujo style...

But, about the second and official manga i can say that
Its more like the anime in every way. It starts one year after the "gate explotion" that Hei made in the final episode of season one in the anime. Util now we have seen a contractor... a really creepy contractor who is chasing Hei, but it says that a lot of people are chasing him. The weird thing about all this is that Hei and Yin are still in Tokyo, even after everything that happened.
Hei and Yin are together, but as far as we can see until now, they get along just as they did in the anime...so, the suggesting scans that we have seen in the announcements for second season are still meaningless.
The final part of chapter two shows an institute girl running away (i cant understand why) and finding the creepy contractor.

Actually, let me correct you on that.

I see. So these are actually two different sets of manga series adapted by two different author whose work ran on these two magazine, Monthly Asuka and Young Gan Gan respectively. Good info. Necessary correction made to the opening post.

the released promotional pictures of yin and hei were for the 2nd season of the anime. The manga here runs a different story so its not suprising if their relationship is not explored.

I dun think the creator of the anime is any part of this manga, the only link they hav is that the mangaka here was also the original character design for the anime. Which is why the style has been so similar.

promo scans, they are promo scans D:
have you guys never learned anything from promo scans they do not suggest romance between characters, enough magazines even make promo scans of 2 male characters in ways a yaoi fangirl would scream her heart out but that doesn't mean that it will happen or if it is happening D: never fall for the promo scans! they are not to be trusted!

Just so you guys know, Yuuji Iwahara, the manga artist for the Second DTB manga was the original character designer for the DTB anime.

It's good to know he's doing a manga based on the characters he design on the anime considering he also doing the manga King of Thorn.

Guess so since...

Kirihara said that thanks to Hei and the EPR's actions on Hell's Gate after defeating their security forces, he revealed to the world about their existence. Reminds me of the X-Men series.

I just zipped through the first 8 chapters and it's a TON better than I was expecting. Kinda wondering why they didn't start S2 off here because it makes more sense to pick up where S1 left off instead of the time skip we're having in the anime. But I'm not complaining because this means twice as much Darker Than Black now. And yay for Kirihara being a lead again!
And since she is still in section 4 at this point (i.e. the same division she was in for the first season) hopefully this will detail why she has been transfered out to the middle of nowhere. I suspect that her, forced, cooperation with Pandora is going to be at the heart of it.

It sounds like her new boss, in Shikkoku no Hana, will have something to do with it. The guy is a huge asshole. What's interesting is that her friend in the Astrology department knows of her obsession with BK201 in Season 2, but not in the manga--so something will happen later on in the manga.

The manga kicks ass, and yes, I wish too that the anime covered Jet Black Flower instead of Meteor, although that most likely stems from my Yin obsession. :heh:

Considering how popular DtB2 seems to be--over here outside Japan, anyways--they might go for another season on Spring. That's my hope.

And yeah, no idea how they'll fit everything in Jet black Flower in 4 OVAs, the story isn't close to being finished and it's already too big for it. Most likely they'll just bridge from Flower to Meteor.

It was never said, officially, that the OVA would be covering the Jet Black Flower. Just that it would bridge the gap between the Tokyo Explotion and season two.
I personally hope the OVA's are a different story, so we can have more DTB.

Yin almost gets kidnapped... as the Syndicate guy explains Hei, it was dumb to leave her alone in a place like that. Then a giant combat doll shows up and destroys those Syndicate contractors... but the doll is from the Syndicate too, albeit a different faction, and she's still as good as kidnapped now, thanks to that combat doll. :heh:

The more i read this the more i think that this is the true sequel to the first season. Its darker and more brutal than whats been shown of season 2 so far, but ill reserve final judgment when i get to see more episodes.

I'm also glad a lot of old characters like that mad scientist and indian girl have returned and we got to see a bit more about pandora.

Also the new contractor powers are well thought out and interesting. I liked the concept of dolls being used as these super soldiers and i hope they explore the concept a bit more.

Strange

It probably has something to do with the mask getting left behind as Suou tackled him into the water. I don't think he had a spare handy on him, and he most likely didn't go back to wherever he was staying for a spare mask. It was just a straight progression from Suou's hideout-> train station -> ferry.

We can confirm two things...
In the manga he says that he is runing out of mask ans knifes.
In seconds season we can see him wearing a mask full of marks, so, we can conclude that that one was his last one

Yes, that mask was left behind when Sou take him to the wather so.... not remuneration

I know the first scene was ep 6 where Havac had said, "You're emotional, but you aren’t mentally unstable like a moratorium, and you don't appear to have paid your price either. Are you really a contractor?”

So our loli didn't die, merely lost conscious, but the flower still acts even when she is unconscious. Um, have the scanlations caught up yet? Last I checked we were still on Chapter 9 or so and I don't know why people wouldn't be working on this series.

Read the first 9 chapters, I think it needs much more Hei/Yin and less Misaki!

So, if this is the sequal to season 1, do we get to know why Hei and Yin turned out the way they did? Or do we get to see that in the OVA instead?

Hei sure softened up in the manga. If this was in S2, he would have surely killed the coach without a second thought (he tried to kill Misaki after all).

I know this happens before S2. I forgot to include "is" before "softened", or maybe I should have just used "soft".

I was trying to say that Hei in the manga is less harsh than the one in S2 (for obvious reasons). :heh:

Anyone read the special chapter from DTB II?

Where they're all inside the Gate and having a cooking contest to make food to satisfy Hei.
Seems the purpose of making the contest is so that Madam will provide secret information to the winner and provide them a meal ticket with Hei.
M16 failed because the Magician cheated to summon an entire course of meal.
The FSB failed because Tanya wanted to use rats to cook because people found it popular that rats can cook (Ratatouille anyone?)
"Section 3" failed because Hazuki just spends the entire time seducing Sawasaki.
"Team Heroines" were able to make food (Misaki, Yin, and Suou all made a dish), but Hei ended up cooking up an entire banquet, so Hei wins lol.

it's pretty fun read given the silly premise, but it's nice to see a bunch of character together and being friendly to each other.

Too bad Amber didn't appear, I mean it's damn Gate, at least give her a guest appearance =(.

Yeah, that was a fun read.

Back to the flower! Chapter 16 was a really confusing read, but from what I gathered

Flower was remnant of a contractor/contractor-related object. To test this object, Pandora injected into that crazy dude, but he died as a result.

What happened at the end of season 1 with Hei in the gate caused him to reawaken again (?) with the ability to inject the seeds into another person as well as retaining his original contractor ability of turning things into sand. The recipient can use the flower's power, but they will both die after a few hours.

What happened with the girl was special, because she didn't die, and the flower didn't wither, which means they can move onto human experimentation on making the strongest army.

Holy, thread revival time!
So, chapter 17 just came out and this one is from Misaki's point of view again. Section four is going to be dissolved in the near future so we now know how she ended up in such a remote place at the start of the second season but I'm betting the group gets in one last big fight to secure Harvest.

It seems like the manga will be coming to an end soon, I'm glad they decided to explore the lore in a bit more depth but not enough to satisfy. Introducing and explaining this new phenomenon of flower just makes this a self contained story which has little relevance to the overall plot.

Yes, it was interesting to see what exactly happened to Misaki and the other members of section 4 prior to season 2. We even saw what happend to her friend from the astronomical observatory.

A new chapter came out today.

Loved the way that cocky contractor was killed. It looks like they managed to get that flower under control, but I doubt that special squad will be enough to kill Harvest.

Darnit, I really hope Mina isn't dead (but since she didn't appear at all in the second season I'm not holding my breath). Really liked her too, she had only a small role in the first season but it was cool to see her re-appear since you got the feeling that the series was really building on itself.
And, well, we know that Hei is alive and in one piece for the next season so clearly he gets out of here alright, betting the flower girl shows up and does something.

If we can accept this manga as canon, chapter 23 answers a pretty vital question, why doesn't Hei use his power over matter to kill his opponents rather than his ninja skills and electrical power. (I'd hate to think what someone would look like if you hit him with a proton/neutron/anti-matter beam or something of that sort.)

Apparently the answer is that Hei doesn't quite know how to control all his powers and it takes a while to "power up" with the lancernopt synchotron radiation bit. Pretty bogus physics explanation for the glowing blue light but it looked really cool in the anime.

Well yes, but it has always been this way, that Yin had been the force after Pai that had kept Hei to carry on somehow.
We saw what happened to him in S2 without Yin at his side...
With Yin he finally could use his power again to its fullest abilities.
