The purpose of this thread is to discuss, critique and idolize the Voice Actor cast of Umineko. Please remember that the discussion should center on their performances as professional voice actors and not on the show content (which can be discussed in the various Episode threads). Please remember this simple rule when critiquing a VA's performance or reading another forum member's critique:

Voice Actors are human.
Yes, it’s true. They’re human. Therefore, don’t just indiscriminately rip them and their work apart as if they’re inorganic objects. You don’t have to praise them non-stop, but be thoughtful in your criticism.
This thread might duplicate some discussion in the Episode threads, but it can also serve to demystify various VA roles, disseminate VA information (VA Bios, VA photos, etc) and provide cast information of various types as well as discussion about performances.

I don't know what to think about Shannon, Rie Kugimiya. (Probably spelled the name wrong ._.)
Now, Rie is actually a very great seiyuu, and definetaly a lot talented. But I'm a bit confused on how she will be reflecting Shannon. The voices I've heard of Rie's in the animes have been tsunderes and "energic" characters. I've also seen her voice acting some shy characters, but her voice in her nature is more compable with "energic" characters.
Will this give Shannon a diffrent personality rather than she has in the Visual Novels? Or will this give her "shy" character a "flavor" that only Kugimiya add? We'll see.. :)
I've already heard clips with Daisuke Ono and Maria Inoue doing Battler and Jessica respectively on youtube. They both sound good, but the deep voice for Battler sounds really weird :P I dunno, maybe I just got use to the idea that Battler sounds similar to Keiichi, even though both are apart in age by a good 2-3 years |D; I'll need to see it in action to get use to it (or not), but Maria Inoue does Jessica's voice exactly the way I imagined it would be~

I'm personally not too surprised myself that Kanon is being given a voice from a female seiyuu. Still we can probably wait for the Drama CD coming out before the anime and get clips somehow to see (I'm counting on you niconico)

I still think Rie Kugimiya and Yui Horie should have swapped roles as they're voicing Shannon and Maria respectively. Yui Horie can her serious tone voice apart from her usual playful voicing that fits Shannon, while Rie Kugimiya has got shrilly high-pitch tantrums down to an art form that perfectly defines Maria.

I don't really think Horie would suit Shannon... nor do I think Kugimiya would suit Maria.
Kugumiya should have voiced Gaap........That aside. Im interested to see how she will voice Shannon.
Daisuke Ono voicing Battler - I didn't know much about Battler's personality before playing the novel, but I was instantly excited. I can't be sure of the voice I imagined for Battler. But Ono has an awesome voice so I can't wait for the dramatic moments.
Marina Inoue voicing Jessica - Once again I didn't know Jessica's personality before playing. But as soon as I found out, I thought Marina was great choice. Can't wait to hear her take on Jessica's way of speaking (ending her sentences with -ze)
Ami Koshimizu voicing Rosa - This is what Im really waiting for. Rosa is a very interesting character. Ami should do a nice job.
Yuu Kobayashi voicing Kanon - I originally imagined Junko Minagawa, but this works even better.
Hirokazu Koyama voicing Rudolf - Not what I expected. But since I like Koyama's voice, I instantly thought FUCK YES.
Mugihito voicing Kinzo - It was either this guy, Fukumoto or Wakamoto or maybe even Jouji Nakata.
Yui Horie voicing Maria - This will work. I can feel it. Now to wait for the creepy moments.

I second Maho Momo: the swap idea would be even worse.
Kugimiya high pitching doesn't match Maria's image at all, and if you compare Yuuki (from Saki) who is a rare non-tsundere loli voiced by Kugimiya, you really cannot compare the two.
And no, Horie would fail big time with Shannon just for huge difference in term of tone: Horie can only do a serious voice with a very deep one, which is arguably not how Shannon would speak.
That say, even with their respective roles, it is a bit mismatched. Well after the little dramacd, uu uu Maria with Horie is fine (especially with this anime design), but kihihi Maria will definitely be a challenge. Meanwhile I still cannot picture Kugimiya one bit with Shannon at all.
After watching the trailer, I still think Sakamoto would have been the best choice for Kanon, unlike Kobayashi who has the knack into pulling a tantrum voice without much tormented aspect. Well, at least her scope matches Kanon general persona, that is.

I think Horie Yui as Maria will be fine. She's well capable of doing creepy voices (latest example that comes to my mind: Kanako from Natsu no Arashi), and use a deep tone when necessary.
On the other hand, Kugimiya Rie as Shannon leaves me a bit puzzled. Sure she's a skilled VA, but I am not fully convinced mostly because one of plain simple reason: can she sound "adult"? My fear is that she could sound way younger than what Shannon looks. Fumiko Orikasa would have been more suited for this role, in my opinion.

Well, she also played Hanyuu in Higurashi. If she uses the menacing voice that she used in that for Hanyuu then she should be alright (perhaps slightly more creepy and less serious)... it's not like she has to use a super batshet crazy voice for Maria like Satsuki Yukino had to use for Shion. :3

But the problem with the cd voice was that Yui Horie sounded like Minorin from Toradora, which I think was unsuited. She should use her even younger voice such as young Ayu in Kanon or young Yume in DCII.

Well she will use her younger voice in this anime since she's playing a nine year old.
She sounded good with Hanyuu, and her voice acting with Minorin was amazing in my opinion showing the weird normal side of her and then the serious almost like "Oyashiro mode" (I even I have a picture with her and Hanyuu in my desktop which I will put in the Higurashi thread after this post. ^_^),
but I wonder how she will do the "kihihihihi". :heh:

About Rie Kugimiya voicing Shannon... don't forget she's played roles such as Alphonse Elric from FMA or the lead from Nabari no Ou.
Obviously, those are male characters, but I think it might be some evidence towards the fact that she can relax her voice and still sound great. Her protrayal of Shannon might be closer to her real speaking voice which is neither as high pitched or loli as the majority of her voiced characters might lead one to believe.
At first I was a little boggled by the choice of casting her for Shannon, but the more I think about it, the better it feels.
I somehow recall hearing a voice sample of Rie Kugimiya that had her doing a whole lot of different voices. Once was a refined voice that really sounded nothing like her, so I image she can pull it off.
Yui Horie has a delicious creepy voice when she wants to do one.

While I start being accustomed with Battler and Maria's voices (and obviously Jessica)...
I couldn't "recognize" George and Rudolf :heh:. Hideyoshi sounds a bit special but fitting, Krauss is the same (though I was expecting something deeper). Rosa, meanwhile is a bit too young but very close to what I've expected.
Eva is... well, Miki Itou really used her Takano mode :heh: it will take time to get accustomed.
That said, I really need to have the animation in front of me, because so far, it is difficult to gauge as it is.
Speaking order goes like this, from what I can tell (not including those that talked longer, like Krauss):

Hideyoshi
Rosa
Eva
These are the ones I recognized. I don't think Kyrie or Natsuhi talked though.
That being said Maria's voice definitely is a bit different from what I expected but hopefully I'll get use to it. George sounds odd, but maybe when I see it with the animation it'll be a little better. Krauss and Rudolf aren't very distinguishable by voice though. Only reason I realized it was Rudolf was because Krauss speaks for the majority of the part after the cousins.
Rosa does sound a bit young to me, but it's close enough. I think Eva's voice should be a little more lighter, but at least it doesn't sound like Takano that much as I feared. Hideyoshi...damn I knew it would be rough but wow XD;
I still like Marina Inoue as Jessica the most so far.

The men sounded really good to me. but Rosa....she sounded too young! Seriously a little bit older would have been much better.

Battler's voice is very very mature... and aggressive. Aggressive makes sense (even though that tone often bothers me personally), but mature is a little weird. Even if his voice IS supposed to be deep, it still sounds a little too old to me. His voice isn't as off as it could be, but it'll still take me a bit to get used to.
Maria's voice... well after listening to it a few times, I've gotten used to her loud and oddly happy tone. I may still find it annoying once the actual anime starts though, and the voice itself is too similar to a few of Horie's other roles. When I initially heard this voice a while back in a HigurashiXUmineko crossover I had a little trouble telling who was Hanyuu and who was Maria, I still see this as a problem.
Jessica has one of the best voices in my honest opinion, before EVER hearing the voices way back... I actually thought that a voice like Mion's would be more fitting, but I was waaaay off, this voice suits her so much more.
George's voice is also one of my favorites, I love not only how he sounds, but how he speaks. Listening to his voice will be rather pleasant. I've got little to say since I've never really heard many of Suzumura's other roles. But I am pretty impressed with this outcome.
Krauss has a somewhat odd voice to me. I'm not sure what it is about his voice that strikes me as odd, but I just find it a little bit off in some way. The voice acting itself is well done, and his attitude seems to be captured pretty well in my opinion. So this isn't very bad at all.
Rudolf's voice on the other hand isn't what I've expected at all, it sounds to me like something is caught in his throat or something (at a couple of moments at least). I don't know how to really explain it. I imagined a much different voice for him and I don't really like this one that much. But I can probably get used to it.
The voice that bothers me the most is Hideyoshi's. He sounds really weird to me, this voice may annoy me a little after listening to it for a while. Maybe I'll get used to it, maybe I won't... it suits him pretty well, but the voice itself bothers me a bit.
Rosa's voice is too immature, she sounds like she's Jessica's age to me. I've listened to it a few times and I still can't really get why Koshimizu was chosen for Rosa. Don't get me wrong, I love her as Tenma, she's a good seiyuu. But this doesn't match up to me at all, other than being a little softspoken and timid.
Eva sounds just like Takano, only a LITTLE different. Her attitude seems a little more haughty to me and I think it works. It's odd hearing Hanyuu and Takano in Umineko, but in this case I think Eva's attitude and sly character were pretty much pinpointed. I'll just have to get used to it sounding so similar. This is one of my favorite voices as well.
I sure hope that Shannon and Kanon don't sound too weird, it would've been nice to hear them as well.

But boy do the voices burn my ears...
George doesn't sound like George and pretty much all the adults sound like some villains from your typical shounen.
Eva's voice is "hahaha"...but that is because I love Takano :heh:
It will probably grow on me later but for now...*cringes*

I'm unfortunately not translating that much: a good portion is from the game script already, however there were slightly edited portions I really cannot catch due to some accents and the flow of the speeches (especially hideyoshi...).
That said, I'm trying to figure as much as I can.
Considering it is 2:30AM right now, I don't think I will last that long, but I will certainly put the whole translation with Chrono's help (timezone doesn't help heh...)

I had to listen twice to distinguish between Krauss and Rudolf myself more accurately. I noticed on the second time that Rudolf's voice is a little less deeper than Krauss's, so that helped.
Still it's odd that Hideyoshi's voice was shown in the little preview, but neither Natsuhi nor Kyrie spoke up. From what I remember Kyrie didn't talk much in the money discussion during EP 1, but Natsuhi just kept on going so I'm a bit surprised XD

In general I like these voices. George sounds pretty young, but the gentle tone of voice is all right. Maria Battler and Jessica: I was already accostumed to them. Maria's voice is very cute but I wonder how will the evil witch mode will sound. The "uu-uu" sound looks more like the japanese "n" but I guess that's the way it is. Jessica is perfect.
Hideyoshi sounds more rude than I expected, but maybe it's because of the situation. Rudolf sounds more juvenile than I imagined. Eva: just as I imagined her. Rosa too young and cute! I can't imagine this voice in musou mode

I agree that Rudolf sounds a bit different from what I was expecting. He did sound like Battler's father for me. Krauss sounded ok in my book. IMO George sounded my first expectation of Battler prior to his seiyuu being announced, but I'll get used to it. Rosa sounds like a wimp (which fits her..*smirk*), and Hideyoshi sounds like your normal Osakan. Eva sounded natural.
I like all voices so far but Maria. Ugh Horie Yui.
My favourites would have to be Jessica, Eva and George though. Jessica sounds great, Eva sounds as I hoped she would (Takano-but-not-as-droopy), and George sounds exactly like I've always imaged.
I can't wait to hear Kyrie's voice. And Genji's too.
Oh, and... can't unhear Karen when Rosa speaks. :(

Yeah Rosa does sound a little too much like an older Karen/Kallen @_@; But it's not too bad.

Battler, Jessica and Maria I've heard before, So I'm already "used" to them. They sound good though.
Hideyoshi... aahahahahahaha! His voice/accent fits his character description, that's for sure.
Rudolph and Kraus, I have a touch of trouble telling them apart ^^:. But I'll get used to it.
Rosa, she sounds as I imagined her honestly. She's described as youngest and timid, so I think the voice fits. And though it's a bit rough to imagine her in her tougher modes, remember, a lot of the higurashi girls sounded sweet and nice in normal mode too. *insert epic horn kick*

When I first heard a few of Koshimizu's roles, I couldn't think of any that would fit Rosa. The closest was Kallen and her voice just seemed all wrong to me.
Hopefully Kyrie's voice won't disappoint... and I'm sure Genji will sound just fine. :3

I have a feeling George IS Shiki Tohno/Mikiya Kokuto. Their art may be a little different but when I heard George's voice, Shiki Tohno was the first guy I associated it with. (Yeah, not Shinn Asuka, my bad XD)
It could be the same case as Chie from Higurashi.
I really like Jessica's voice, Marina should do a stellar job throughout. Battler sounds good, George is fitting imo but Maria came off really weird though... Eva and Kraus were good for the adults, going to have to get use to Rudolf and Hideyoshi.. though the laters voice seems to fit. Rosa was one of the major ones I was iffy on before hand... skill as a seiyuu isn't an issue...

Same thing I was thinking right away. I even looked up wikipedia for confirmation it wasn't the same VA.
Characters look good to me. Jessica sounds the same as Alicia in Valkyria Chronicles... just not as 'tsundere'. Maria reminds me of Minorin with her ''omg randum xD'' attitude. I certainly hope Maria won't be like that. Cute & Creepy is good enough.
I can see myself adopt to the rest of the crew, since I never played the games.

I'm amused that Krauss' seiyuu is the same that did Kujo Jotaro. Do we get manly Krauss now?
I am so going to hate anime Maria. And Rosa sounds like a 15 year old, not a mother of nine year old kid. Eva is way over the top here, it worked for Takano but I think way over the top fit Takano much more than it should fit Eva. Eva is more about implied malice and sense of superiority. Krauss sounds more confident that I had pictured him, I don't know, I wanted him to sound like a mediocre crook who doesn't bluff too well. ;) Maybe it's just that the drama CDs are extra-theatrical and anime seiyuu perfomances are more subdued-acting wise?
Battler sounds a bit too mature for 18 years (and you know, for Battler, the funny guy) but I like it. I like Jessica's voice too. George sounds like a geek. :) SO I like the cousins voices more than the parents.
Did you watch Code Geass. You'll have a pretty good idea if you think of Kallen.

Honestly though, George's voice might be odd with his character design, well maybe not, we'll see. Hideyoshi makes me giggle, he sounds very jolly.

I am okay with most of the voices. Eva and Jessica are PERFECT, Rosa, George and Krauss are definitely different from what I expected, but I still like them. I don't think Battler's voice fits his character design, but he has a very nice voice nonetheless.

I imagine Rosa's voice will be different when she's in a position of control. The scene given would imply she's being submissive as the youngest of the family in order to still get at least some of the gold, if there is any. Later on she might be more interesting when it is just her with the kids.
From those samples, i believe i am left less impressed than i could have been overall, at least for now. Jessica and Maria are probably the ones i find most fitting and have little complaints there, and Kraus sounds slightly odd (though can't put my finger on it exactly), but i believe largely fitting as well. Eva is a bit overdone, as pointed out above, as she shouldn't be so "in-your-face" and more subtle, but a fine choice in the end. Now Rosa though - that is a voice i can not stomach; I realize she is supposed to be young looking, but come now - she sounds like a high-schooler, not someone who is a mother to a nine year old girl herself. My biggest gripe though goes with Battler himself - the voice sounds a bit too deep, especially coupled with his new and shoutafied design that makes him look like a snobby brat. I can't seem to connect his looks and that voice at all, so i don't know. Well, might be a bit early to cry foul and cast judgment before it has actually aired, and i am more than willing to give the seiyuu a chance, and seeing the characters along with the voices will likely go a long way, but i must admit to the initial premises having left me somewhat weary whether some of the choices have been the best in order to convey these specific characters.

in a certain Episode of the VN, Krauss was shown to have a slightly-altered pattern
of speech after spending time on the island, using terms as "watashi" instead of "ore", or
something like that. Maybe being surrounded by money and nothing else does something to

Even Battler's deep voice pretty much fit, especially in such a serious conversation. Maybe when it gets to the parts with him being all childish and perverted we'll hear his higher voice~ XD And if not, oh well.... its Daisuke Ono~!! <33

Ono's Battler is fine and GAR so I'm 100% ok with it.
For Maria, I might have to eat my words because Yui Horie's kiddy role voice for Maria actually sounds great. However, I need to hear her hihihihihi Maria voice to be conclusive in my opinion.
Maria Inoue's Jessica sounds fitting enough, but she sounds a wee bit too much as her other current role as Alicia in VC.
George's voice probably matches his body remake a lot, as his voice doesn't really reflect the fuller and deeper voice most chubbier people tend to have.
Krauss and Rudolph sound good enough. Hideyoshi sounds a bit off, something like his voice sounds too lean for a man of his build and penchant for bellyaching around. Also isn't he supposed to have a different intonation and maybe dialect than everyone else? I'm not really hearing it.
Rosa sounds a wee bit young, but I'm actually impressed with what Ami Koshimizu has done with it. I don't know if it's because most of the work I've heard her do tends to circle around her Horo voice, but I think she'll fit the bill eventually.
Eva sounds almost... too perfect for the role. Like everyone else I'm expecting a Takano-level of boisterous insanity when it's her turn to shine.

See, that's the thing. Is it stated anywhere that George is actually chubby? I think he is meant to be normal sized, it's just the way he ended up being drawn in the game. He doesn't look that big in my opinion. XD

I don't know where you got that idea, because I hear a lot of people with deeper voices who happen to be skinny or average sized and a lot of chubbier people who have higher voices. Men and women. I didn't think there was any "rule" to weight making your voice a lot deeper of "fuller" or anything...

Awesome. Still don't like Maria's voice (I liked Horie as Hanyuu, but not using the exact same voice here), and Rosa does sound too young, but other than that I'm pretty happy with the rest. Especially Rudolf (Jack Bauer, or Duke from Tales of Vesperia) and Krauss (Alexei, also from Vesperia). I fell in love with just how awesome Alexei's voice sounded in that game, so I'm more than happy to hear it pop up again.

Rudolfs was.. weird, I'm having a hard time seeing Rosa's voice in "Rosa-musou" mode, and for Eva... She is Takano, takano, TAAAKANOOO~ And I love it ^o^ As far as I Battler goes I really do like him, but some parts sounded a bit weird to me... After listening to the clip when Maria is crying about her rose, I have to SLIGHTLY change my opinion on Rosa's voice. There were a couple of instances when her voice actually sounded fitting to me. Overall she still sounds too young, but I think I'll be able to get over that quickly.
Yeah I feel the same way :/ Sometimes I'm like: Okay, she sounds good for her age.
But then later I'm like: Too young, you sound like you're 17.
:U I suggest taking the range that she used in the airport scene when she arrived with Maria and using that. I liked that range the most. She actually sounded around her 30's. Just a matter of opinion though.

Beelzebub's seiyuu was surprisingly good, although I have to hear more dialogue before I can say she's really good. Gohda also shined on this episode.
I hope Asmodeus' seiyuu does a better job on her future appearances since she didn't exactly leave an excellent performance on her first appearance. I'm looking forward to the rest of the stakes specially for Mammon (for obvious reasons I can't say yet).

Yeah they're confirmed. There was a magazine scan that showed Virgilia and Ronove's sketches along with their seiyuu's names. And Lambdadelta was just added to the official anime website.

Yeah, he hasn't done much anime voice acting. But he's freaking Gaeta from BSG. :) I don't really like many dubs, but I was pleased with his performance as L. I think his live action acting experience served him well. Maybe Kanon isn't the best part for him (I first thought George would be a good fit, and maybe it would be better).

Okonogi is going to come somewhat soon. I was wondering who was going to voice him. His seiyuu in Higurashi voices Krauss (Kosugi Jurota), so I was curious if they were going to let him voice 2 characters or find somebody new.

I'm sure they'll just let Jurota do it. Okonogi only appears in one scene and that's it, so I don't see a problem.

Other than the ones where they all speak at the same time, I don't think so. I also don't think Mammon got any lines for herself yet, though I could be wrong.
At this point only recognizable voices have been Lucifer and Leviathan in EP 3 and Satan, Beelzebub and Asmodeus in EP 2.
However I'm sure we'll hear Belphegor and Leviathan more in a near future

If you play the scene where Beatrice summons the six sisters after Lucifer's defeated by Kanon, you can briefly hear Belphegor's laugh. That's about it, though.
She was supposed to have one line during the magic battle, but it was given to Beelzebub instead.

Which, yet again, isn't really much for one to judge a voice on. A laugh is a laugh but it's not actual dialogue :heh:
Still Belphegor will have plenty of dialogue in a couple episodes, so no worries.

BUt still, Beelzebub doesn't have much lines in this episode. Maybe next episode but still, not many lines for her

Since shes queen of fanservice, she'll be voiced by the souls of each boob that has bounced for no reason the entire series..... so it'll be a combo of everyone but Maria, Lambda, and Bern.

Age difference or not, they're different characters who need entirely different seiyuu. Besides... the relation with the characters isn't even confirmed... there's more evidence showing connections between Genji and Ronove and Kumasawa and Virgilia than there are with this character and the others... as far as I know, the idea that they're even connected in any way is just a theory.

Well, *I* think Gaap represents Jessica, but we probably shouldn't be talking about that in this thread.:uhoh:
Anyway considering that about that character there has never been any clear reference to a vessel (unlike Ronove and Virgilia), giving her the same voice of her vessel would be a very bad move, because that would completely cut out any chance of speculation. Once you see the VA is the same, you can't really imagine the vessel is another one.
It is as if they gave the same VA to Shannon and Kanon, then the shkannon theory wouldn't even be a "theory" anymore.

I just realised 4/5 of the new seiyuu announced were in Amatsuki, though 2 of them were only minor roles. Not surprising seeing how that's another DEEN series. Kouji Yusa is a good choice for Juza, I imagine he'd use his Shinonome voice for him.

Since I forgot how Kon's pitch and voice is like, I'm gonna skip on commenting that part :heh: I'm just hoping that he would do a bit lower pitch than his Seizh (UTM) and Mizushima (Sutasuka) pitch, but still I would accept any kind of voice he do for Amakusa, especially if he somehow turns Amakusa's line into エロい :p -bitchslapped- Though I swore I did not really expect him to voice Amakusa as much he is on my consideration list since he has been like MIA doing new roles in anime world for sometime. Thank God he is not MIA in Drama CDs which enhances his voice 150% >v<
The only thing that I am a bit worried is how he will voice "Hyaha" laugh lol I mean his voice is not that hyper from my experience lmao :heh: Though easily remedied like Beato's cackles /'v'/ Still on tl;dr, I am so happy about Yusa voicing one of fangirls eye-candies in Umineko. Though I can't erase the image of ERO-Amakusa in my head now.

TT_TT (so yeah a secret fan of Amakusa since well, he is more stylish than Battler and Ryu-chan's stealing some kind of creativity from Tetsuya Nomura's clothing design style rofl so him voiced by the man who can gave fangasm to fangirls in every lines he spoke helps. A LOT.)

I haven't really watched alot of Romi acts, but I did hear her in CLANNAD as a Cat shota, so a lion shota isn't too far away ;D
While I don't know about the lion part of things, Minorin can do shota from her time on Today in Class 5-2. Which is basically a cheerful Chiaki voice from Minami-ke.
