Two things: [mod edit: now only one]

1) I'm sure they've recycled the bowling scores from Lucky Star Ep 18 in here. :heh:

Kyo-Ani make the great job for this Ep. so deep in detail follow same as novel. Even i can't understand japanese language but cause kyo-ani good work so i can know what is going on clearly.
Cute Yukata & swimsuit & Frogsuit + High detail = 10/10

This episode is great service, lots of eye candy and laughs, for this reason I gave it a 10 lol

But it seems that they've skipped some parts, but then I'm thinking these parts would be shown in the next Endless Eight.

I think the art is moving closer to Season 1 style this time, will need to watch a HQ version to confirm.

The new eye-style fits mikuru, but not haruhi. They need to give Haruhi her season 1 extremely sharp eyes back. Her current eyes reminds me of Yui from K-On.

Haruhi's eyes are alright for me, but she has an upgrade to her figure :heh:

If anything, the service this episode provides has shown us that she has a more beautiful bottom.

I haven't even seen the episode yet, but the images I've seen and the novel story of it I read will definitely put it above a nine on my scale.

I liked the OP, but I still think that's it's the same as with Tomare! VS Hare Hare Yukai.

Well, there goes the braketology for the S2 schedule predictions. The way this episode is shown, there HAS to be another full episode to counterpoint. And notice how time flies in 1/2 hour even for a short story. We may have to extend eps counts for Sigh and, especially, Disappearance, which means some short stories may not make it on screen.

All the better, put those eps direct to Blu-ray and sell a ton of discs.

Very enjoyable episode, with all the little hallmarks of SHnY humor.

Hirano Aya really shone, for me, her energetic voice helping Haruhi give the episode its forward motion.

I liked the OP animation, but Yamakan it ain't. Hirano's singing has some drive, and is better than in Bouken Desho Desho, but the song's still just okay for me, hearing it for the first time.

Allot of illustrations do portray Haruhi as being moderately busty. (http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/3573/84815375.jpg)

My personal fave shot in the episode was when Haruhi climbs out of the pool...nice hips. I'll have to screen shot it when higher definition comes out.

C.A.
2009-06-18, 16:30
Yea Haruhi really did get alot of improvement to her hips, its becoming her main asset, they're showing it in the OP and throughout the episode lol

Mikuru has the boobs, so Haruhi will get the butt, they seem to separate the assets for the female characters nowadays.

Speaking of that particular shot in the OP, anyone else notice the student sitting to Haruhi's right, visible for a split second?

That's the classmate with brown pigtails and glasses, (forget her name...) and I'm 90% sure that is her seat.

DETAILS.

DETAILS.She is everyone's favourite classmate, she probably has more fanart than any other classmate.

So it seems Haruhi has had her butt as the main asset all the while, but now they've made it HD. Her butt gets more details now, just look at the part when she's catching cicadas.

Anyway Yuki has great skill in finding rare lifeforms like Heracles and giant earthworms lol

The part where Mikuru gets a worm is hilarious.

Caught an FLV version (very small)...... I'll just note that Haruhi has a rather dramatic shirt with "69" in huge font and chuckle at what I assume is the implicit "engrish". Fascinating, they played the storyline in this episode completely "straight".... I'm guessing the next episode is the equivalent of the "Nagato data spew" mind-blow we got in ep 5 of season one.

How precisely Nagato can look poker-faced while being dragged forwards into a pool of water I'll never know.

I mean, besides that she's an alien and whatnot.

Just saw it and wow.
Wow.

...Wow.

I'm seriously impressed by how much I liked this episode considering which events were happening in it and how they handled them in relation to the light novels. (i.e. What they included and didn't.) Usually I'm completely against playing up any kind of normalcy in Haruhi stories, and slice-of-life rarely works for me in any series--never mind this one.

In this case, though, Aya Hirano's voicework and all the fabulous new background music won me over effortlessly, contributing so much to helping me understand how deeply Haruhi's invested in making her friends and her group successful--and, more importantly, sympathizing with her and supporting that goal. For the first time, I'm thinking I might still like Haruhi if she were more of a normal girl, and that feels odd to me since I almost never appreciate anybody except weirdo quirky characters and since I get annoyed with Kyon's light novel narration about wanting her to be more regular.

But this is anime. I can blame it on Aya Hirano, blame it on the charming music, or blame it on simply being a different medium not so dominated by Kyon, but I do think I liked her with her indomitable We'll Find Fun No Matter What self just as much as her usual indomitable We'll Find Aliens No Matter What self.

Needless to say, I'm so, so eagerly awaiting next week's episode. Can't wait to see how they handle it.

Strange since I really didn't care for the Lone Island Syndrome settings and episodes, but they were given more things to do in Endless Eight and the environments, outfits, and character goals were all constantly changing to make things a little more dynamic.

hm not sure if I should be posting this in this thread but did you guys notice the symbolic number of cicadas that each character caught?

Mikuru = 1 (Volume 1 = Melancholy)
Yuki = 4 (Volume 4 = Disappearance)
Koizumi = 7 (Volume 7 = Intrigues)
Kyon = 9 (Volume 9 = Dissociation)

And Finally Haruhi = 12 (Next main story arc possibly)
Strangely enough 1, 4, 7 & 9 are the main story arcs and they happen to capture that same number of cicadas... coincidence?

The episode was descent enough - plainly a filler for a time passing by setup. "summer holiday episode" but what it did well was show us how Kyon is under Haruhi's thumb like nothing else and he fails at summer Homework just like every other male high school student =P

After all that's out of the world with every other episode of Haruhi, having an ordinary one still is enjoyable nonetheless. Heck, maybe I enjoyed it more because of the contrast with every other episode there is, just like how enjoyable the school festival and the last episode was of last seasons.

Been awhile since I read the story, somehow it's different from what I read. Classic though and yes, they are defiantly putting more hip/butt style to Haruhi(I'll join the ass ketchum group :P). Best part was the work on Mikuru's chest, Kyon "I'll retrieve it!". 9.5/10, I wanted a 1-episode, next one should be interesting just to see how they do it.

New OP is lovely, I was quite entertained by it. I like the first one better but this one definitely has its own charm.

I see we have ascended. (To Current Series.)

An idle thought made me rewatch the episode to check something: Yuki truly is a lady of few words, with a total of four this episode. "Kore" and "katta" regarding the mask, "sou" regarding the beetle, and "hai" when trying to give out balloons.

She must be saving up for the inevitable infodump later.

Anyone else like the part in the new OP with Shami/Kyon's sister, Kunikida and Tanguchi, then the computer club doing the "I dont know" shrug, I think its pretty funny! The art style is different from first season, much softer this time, and concentrating on uhmmm feminine Assets :P.

Hey, I have spelling corrections for the new subs, where do you think I can find Mazui to show them to him?

Nowhere. This guy does rushed subs to bring service, I think. That's why subs were up within eight hours from the airing in Japan. But you won't find his site anywhere ever.

What an enigma. Just wait for a.f.k. to do the /good/ subs or watch Coal/gg's definitely-not-as-good subs.

It was still enjoyable though and fits into the perfect time for summer.

I really enjoyed this episode. I read the novel for this but its been so long that I forgot the events of this story but it did come rushing back to me so now I look forward to how they will handle the next episode.

As an adaption I think they did a good job. Watching the slice of life aspects are a whole lot more fun than reading about them. I think they did a really good job of bringing the moments to life so to speak.

My favorite moment was definitely when Yuki bought the mask and when Haruhi let the cicadas go. :p

Addendum: Assuming you haven't read the story in the novel already.

I enjoyed this episode but it posed some pretty interesting questions regarding Mikuru and her history.

For example she was un familar with traditional Japanese dress, so does that mean she isnt Japanese (is she from another country we'd be familar with in our time frame)? or does it mean that in the future Japan doesnt exist as a country?

She also seemed to be pretty un familar with fire works, which is strange because fire works have existed for thousands of years (as has traditional japanese dress), its not like they'll suddenly disapear in the future.

Her lack of familiarity with modern physical technology suggests she's from thousands of years into the future where they no longer use physical technology at all.

I thought someone discribed Mikuru as a foreigner once.

Fireworks could be as simple as them being illegal in her time, and/or she's spent most of her time indoors (like say on an Arcology) and thus never been in a place that used fireworks. Would also explain why she has no clue about boats.

The time period Mikuru potentially comes from could be as far removed from us as we are from stone age people.

Well are you talking about ethnicity or country of birth? unless the subs are wrong she says

so this is the traditional dress of this country

Which implies shes not from Japan.

As for the idea that she'd be unfamilar of fire works, I suppose its possible but to be honnest technological changes and cultural changes dont really work like that. Its a cultural activity practiced the world over, technology only disapears when something better replaces it, fire works serve no pracitcal purpose so nothing is likely to replace them or something happens that causes us to loose knowledge (think Roman empire to the dark ages) but that seems unlikely because our ability to produce information and record it has grown dramatically.

...Everyone in our time over the age of four knows about boats. She didn't even know how boats WORKED. This implies that boats have become obsolete in the future.

Or everyone is interfaced with machines.

I have this crack theory that the espers' Agency will eventually gain the technology the aliens use and give rise to the time travelers, who use biotech and live in machine worlds.

Well are you talking about ethnicity or country of birth? unless the subs are wrong she says

I'm saying she looks Japanese. She might actually be European for all we know, but she looks Japanese enough not to stand out.

Supposedly, far, far in the future, as people across the world interbreed, we will all eventually have brown hair and olive skin. Like Greeks.

Unless of course they're a post singularity civilization that has been interfaced with computers for the last thousand generations. The trivial purposeless entertainment of a civilization like that would be mind bogglingly different than anything we could think of.

In this civilization, knowing about boats and chemical explosives of any kind either makes you a history buff of a crazy survivalist.

Although more Haruhi is good, I don't exactly see the point of this episode.

Does it serve any purpose in the story? Is this like a setup for the Sigh arc??Well, I can't answer that either way since it would be spoiler territory--but whether this particular case does or doesn't serve a purpose, I don't know why you'd necessarily expect everything to lead up to something else in Haruhi. :P

I mean, I'd say that in the original fourteen episodes they could have cut at least four out of Boredom, the Lone Island Syndrome set, Day of Sagittarius, Mysterique Sign, and Someday in the Rain and nothing serious would be lost in the overall story arc. (Though I do love two of those episodes very much.) Shoot, they could probably cut five if the one remaining was either Boredom, Day of Sagitarrius, or maybe Someday in the Rain, since those helped further develop the Haruhi/Kyon trust relationship which some fans find so pivotal.

I must say, I really enjoyed the background music for several of the scenes in this episode. It was a nice touch, and gave each event a different feel.Absolutely. It really further established just how important soundtracks and musical direction are to me.

I'm a big fan of quick subs, even when there are a few errors or infelicities. The "bigger groups" aren't immune from errors, either. And I am so grateful to the groups that can get a sub out the door within 10-24 hours of the broadcast. This is the norm for the first Chinese subs, and I don't see why we can't get English subs at near the same pace -- as we have been doing more and more over the past year or so, thanks to people denigrated as "speed subbers."

I don't have the Ova on hand at the moment so I can't really confirm or deny it, but Lucky Star tends to make Haruhi references, and generally not the other way around. The Frog suit has been around in Haruhi for quite a while - most episodes set chronologically after Endless Eight (Like Someday in the Rain) have it on the clothes rack in the clubhouse.

I don't see it either, but i really loved that episode, in fact, it's already one of my favorites. There's nothing big happening, but life is like this. It's not like there's always something exciting happening. I liked that episode because of this, cause highschool students do get around to do their stuff and even if you are in the SOS dan, you're no exception, you still are human(well, except for Yuki, hehe) and still have to goof around.

Loved. Loved that one. Besides, the fact that Yuki bought a children's mask made it look like this was the birth of the Otaku Yuki in Haruhi chan(at least for me) and that's awesome.

10/10 and i think this is the first 10/10 that i ever gave to anything here in Asuki. Can't wait for the other ones.

I'm very sure that the shirt is the staff's way of mocking Aya Hirano (http://generationotaku.net/images/tidbits/0408/hirano.jpg).

I don't know, on close examination Haruhi is wearing a shirt with "*69".

The holes in the 69 are stars.

So... I'm wondering if that is intentional... *69 ----> Plot of Endless Eight?

It seems to fit to me. Could they really be that subtle? If so I think it's pretty amazing.

69... who knew that even Haruhi would do that to us??

Anyway, since I've watched this episode for about the third time, I just noticed that Mikuru has said more to Nagato and Koizumi in two episodes than in the entire 14-episode first season. It's pretty annoying to see Mikuru transfer lines between just Kyon and Haruhi.

I like how this episode gave off a vibe that even though everyone is an "agent" from a faction, they're all civil and friends.

We decided to put this kind of number style because:
1) most just want to check stuff related to the new season
2) Using "current" numbers used for this airing season will be even more confusing because we certainly won't create threads for episodes from the old season. Therefore, seeing threads like "Episode 8, Episode 12" out of nowhere wouldn't be exactly anything better.

Are you actually implying that weeks from now people are going to forget which episode is "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody" (the one with the sticking the papers on the bamboo) or "Endless Eight" (the one that happens at the end of the eighth month, August), but they'll know them as Episode 1 or Episode 2 when there's up to twelve other new episodes that are similarly named? For what it's worth, "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody" is a pretty memorable title, along with "Endless Eight", but for the most part I would be more likely to remember an episode by number/sequence than by title. Not all titles are equally memorable, plus the files don't generally have titles in them either. I suppose the ultimate ideal would be to have both number and title (as is a common standard on Japanese p2p), but that's just not the usual way in the English community.

At the end of the day, the way we're listing the episodes here in the forum is consistent with the way we list them on AnimeSuki proper. So, while all the arguments have some merit, we might as well be, at the very least, consistent with our own "parent site".

Kind of makes you wonder if one answer is that he mutters unconsciously ...

Actually, one of the older theories on why Haruhi seems to be able to respond to Kyon's thoughts (which could be extended to the rest of the SOS-dan) is that, while he might think he's just snarkily thinking to himself, what's really happening is that he's actually unconsciously saying things out loud.

Well, like what I posted on the 2009 Re-Launch topic, here is the new opening piano version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wjMqRMc5Kg
Please tell me if you like it ^^'
Wow, i loved it. It's really well made. I thought the upbeat of the music wasn't going to get nice in the piano, but you nailed it.

So, Kyon is crazy then? :heh: And it's strange, because Kyon never reacts like "wow, she's reading my mind?" or something like that. It's really strange.

Speaking one's mind out loud doesn't really mean he's crazy -- a few of my friends do it in their unguarded moments too -- it's just that it's one of the more likely theories out there. Discounting the possibility that Haruhi might have an empathic link with Kyon (which might go some ways to explain why she seems to be able to read Kyon's mind), it doesn't really explain why everyone else can reply to Kyon's musings as well.

This made the episode for me. I literally clapped when they showed this. Two things on why it's more awesome than the usual Itano Circus (objectively, there's only one reason actually, but since I'm a Macross fanboy, I'll add another one):

1. "Kakizaki!" + camera zoom out at "missile" launch + explosions over a large area = It's a Macross tribute. And this time it's an in-episode one rather than the "Listen to my song!" / "Bomber!" back in 2006 at the end of Day of Sagittarius in the preview for Live Alive.

2. bike + toy rockets = It shows more or less how Ichiro Itano developed his Circus.

Some kind of pyrotechnic toy, it appears. Maybe that's what happens when you bury a firework...?

Maybe the short duration doesn't do it much justice such that we don't see long winding missile trails. But I do see trails and they indicate erratic trajectory. Were you looking for the trails right before the explosions? As far as I remember in Macross, the missiles and trails do disappear shortly before we see the explosions over a large area.

I have an idea, let's just ask ghostlightning about this.

There's some scenes where he's clearly not speaking out loud as he's narrating (leaving open the possibility that he simply says the words while he's off-camera).

Remember; what Kyon (/the camera) shows you isn't neccessarily what happens immediately; he has liberty to skip a few seconds back and forth, enough to screw with your brain

I grabbed this list a while back from somewhere... Valid?Well, there has been no officially-published schedule of episodes. In fact, it's a very-tightly kept secret, given that the episodes don't even contain next-episode previews. So that was just an early fan "best guess" based on what they knew of the novels, but nobody knows exactly how long the different arcs for the different novel stories will be.

So I guess the short answer is, treat it as a "good guess", but not as fact. Things are always subject to unexpected change (especially given that they're keeping it such a tight secret).

An interesting thing Kyoto Animation has been doing with the series is making slight changes from the original script to have Haruhi act a little nicer to Kyon than she does in the novel equivalents of the scene (That or the B-T translations are just goofy). Like in Endless Eight when they go to get the yukata's she says Koizumi would look good in one but when she looks at him she gives an ugly expression (No such scene in the episode). Also, they always make sure to have her call out his name when trying to get the group's attention, and offering the Takoyaki to him first. Actually, they just make her more considerate in general. They even made a point of her mentioning Yuki's yukata too, when she usually just ignores her in the books.

In the novel she also comments how the pool stinks...where as in Baka tsuki she comments how it smells great.

But that thing with the Yukata is rather amusing, considering that Kyon was about the only person Haruhi knew who she wanted to take over to the new world(which she only wanted to change because he was flirting with someone else) unchanged...and then she's like "you look like shit!".

Hilarious.

More than anything else, I was really surprised in this episode by the undisguised and extremely iconic view of the Kobe waterfront shown during the fireworks show. I mean, they've never really made much of an effort to hide where the series is taking place, but I'm pretty sure it's the first time they've had such an unmistakable shot of a major Japanese city (not far by rail from the characters' hometown of Nishinomiya Anytown, Japan). It breaks the illusion (however flimsy) of the series taking place in a generic "Japanese" location, and brings with it all the built-in assumptions related to Kansai.

Just to prove my point, here's a picture of the real thing (Kobe Harborland ferris wheel just out of frame):

Just watched it myself. Though, I actually waited for the a.f.k release. Didn't feel like downloading the same episode several times. :p

A sort of easygoing episode I must say. Was a bit disappointed to see Yuki in school uniform through several scenes since I like seeing the girls in plain clothing whenever the situation arrives.

I am also quite fond of the new opening, specially that part at the very end where Tsuruya and the rest of the characters do that no-no thingie.

Of course, I love everything Tsuruya does. Show me a scene of her reading the phone book and I'll probably find the moe in that too. :):p

Fantastic. Like the new opening with it's halftone very comic-like effects. I'm with Daniel E on the 'no-no' bit.

I loved Kyon's 'Itano Circus', although I wonder how many people might turn up in emergency with burns to their posterior attempting to emulate that feat.

So that's where the frog outfit came from.

Wow. Just wow. This episode reminded me of why I love this series so much. Love the new OP, and having a slice-of-life look at the SOS Brigade during summer vacation was just plain fun. But the bit that put this episode over the top for me was Kyon's tribute to Macross. Bicycle Macross missiles with a "Kakizaki!!!" to top it off...so much win I can't put it into words. 10/10 episode for me.

As a side note, I also waited for a.f.k.'s subs before downloading. I'm glad I waited, it was worth it.

And so many solo shots of Yuki. You'd almost think they're trying to tell us something about her... :D

The funny thing is that Kyon's bicycle moment may have been a nod to Macross but,
1) it wasn't a strapped-on moment. Lots of people have done that with fireworks (hell, we used to do it with our cars)
2) NO knowledge of Macross was necessary nor did it seem out of character.

That's what I call a good easter egg. Its there for those who notice a connection and doesn't leave others saying "wtf?? o.0?"

I would never have thought it as a reference to anything - just part of the summer night's fun.

I think they all (knowing how Haruhi is) just show up really early so they don't upset her. Mikuru probably knows from her knowledge of the future to show up early, Koizumi can read Haruhi's mood, and Yuki is Yuki.

Not to mention, for the most part, they are all there to observe/please Haruhi, and not much else. Kyon probably has to get ready like any normal person, while the other 3 are simply waiting for Haruhi to call. :heh: She also probably calls Kyon last. :D

And i'll go with her reporting Kyon in a later time. What better way to manage him to get to pay for everyone? Even if it's unfair with the guy, since they have Koizumi, who is as rich as possible. Having a guy like him next to you and still having to pay everything for everyone must be hard...

Glad the new episodes of Haruhi are still going but damn why did we have to wait that long for the next one? Eh... whatever just glad we have any at all.

Don't want to say much but overall a pretty good episode like the last. A few funny parts here and there, Mikuru being cute and I'm satisfied (oh... forgot to mention Nagato too :D). The new opening looked really nice with some cool comic like panels, I like it alot just like the ending. I plan to add those two songs on my mp3.

Both episodes show some cutbacks in art quality when compared to the broadcast first season. At first I just thought it was because my memory was more freshly imprinted with DVD version, but I still have the first season subs.

I figure we're just seeing the signs of the global recession in Japan.

Lots of still scenes? I thought though they are still, they are quality pics.

I don't see real problems with this episode, in fact they've even fixed the bad proportions of characters shown in BLR.

I always think that Takahashi Mariko, the animation director of this episode, is the worst animation director in KyoAni. (It's not I'm saying this episode is bad in art quality. Actually, I found she goes well with Haruhi as an anime series.) Especially, she doesn't get along with Kyon.

Nishiya is a slow starter, so I'm pretty sure that his works are getting better soon. Come to think of him, The preview of K-ON ep 13 looked like he took part in it. Hey, Nishiya, what's about Haruhi?! I was under the impression that you had left K-ON since ep 2 for devoting yourself to Haruhi.

I think it's because KyoAni is producing more and more anime than before, so they are taking less time to make each episode than they used to.

Given KyoAni's rotation of animation directors, it's highly likely that the next animation director is Akitake. Have he ever drawn official illustration of Haruhi? I wonder what the next episode will be like.

I knew I'd forgotten to do something as I was catching up on all of my subs last night. Good thing I remembered before work because I was actually getting kind of bored. Also a good thing that while this episode contained the typical summer activities you might find in an Japanese anime and the typical SOS brigade style of interactions as well, somehow them going together made for a pretty fun summer episode. Couldn't really ask for much better timing then this as well. The music continues to be solid and if there was only one thing that bothered me this episode it was Aya Hirano's Yuko Minaguchi light delivery for Haruhi during the first half. So glad they deintensified her during the wind down portion of the summer break because oh my god that was just non stop nasal blabbering, even if it was probably supposed to be deliberate.

Well if anything good came of Haruhi this episode is was the fact that because it was typical summer time activities it actually meant something for this particular anime, that being that Haruhi is slowly starting to normalize in her behaviour a bit, and we even sort of see this over the course of the episode as well since as I mentioned she starts off insufferable and ends up tolerable by the end. Other than that Mikuru and Yuki do their usual things (get scared of everything and be a living statue respectively), Kyon does his Wonder Years bit and Itsuki is a chill dude, but 'twas fun to watch them anyway.

Always wished they could have brought the lil' sis along with this story because it's a missed opportunity for loli fanservice at the pool, but oh well, you can't have it all I suppose. Change is on the horizon regardless, for better and worse.

Face looks fine to me, and her irises(sp?) look fine as well. The only thing that irks me is the distance between her eyes.

I don't mind Kyon in the first pic, but Ito-sensei's rendition of him is all over the map in the light novel illustrations, so maybe I'm just more receptive to it. His character design isn't really as distinct as anyone else's anyway, likely intentionally.

That Yuki, however, is bad. This is Haruhi, not Clannad...or Kanon....or Air...

Same characters, different stories. Just like pretty much every other anime sequel not named Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood or Hellsing Ultimate...

VEE: You really need to watch the first season before you can watch this second season. The new episodes take place, in many cases, between existing episodes, so you'd be very confused if you just started now. It's even worse than a traditional sequel in that regard.

Solachinx

Not really, because Ultimate and Brotherhood are different series from the original, but it's still the same plot albeit a tad more true to the manga. Wheras the Haruhi rerun is the same series, only with some new episodes added.

However, it is also a reboot because of "new management" (the director), some new content being added, and because the 2009 run as a whole will be different from the 2006 run as a whole.

So, it can go either way.

Actually, you don't need to watch the first season before this one. Maybe is even better if you do not.

The current season, is not a sequel, is a rerun with new episodes. So you can just watch then as they are being realesed. So you should watch some old ones in the chronological order and the new ones.

To help, the episodes before the "episode 1 of Season 2" are originally the 2,3,5,10,13,14,4. Or 2,3,4,5,6,7,8 by the DVD order. Then it comes the "S2 episode 1" (actually episode 8 of the rerun). After that is 7,6,8(broadcast)/9,10,11(DVD). And the come the current one.

So, even though you need watch some old ones (that were also rerealeased this year) you don't need to wach all First Season. You could only wacth then in order.

It's kind of like the Star wars and the expanded universe in that way, you have the six movies, but each movie has time gaps between them, that all the books, comics and tv shows fill up, to me that's what the first half of the "new" season is like

Let's make this easier.
1) Buy Haruhi DVDs. Ignore the first episode.
2) Watch through the baseball ep. (Boredom)
3) Watch "Season 2 episode 1" (Bamboo Leaf)
4) Watch through Remote Island Syndrome II.
5) Watch this episode.

And yes, you need those previous episodes for Season 2 to make any sense. You don't need the episodes after Lone Island Syndrome II (yet).

Why are you excluding The Day of Sagittarius and not Boredom? Boredom serves absolutely no purpose at all in "making sense" of the '09 episodes, or even the '06 ones.

I can't figure out if this belongs here or in the new episode's thread (or even in some other thread), but while waiting on subs for the new episode I played this one with both a.f.k. and Mazui subs simultaneously out of curiosity for what the differences were.

With episode 3 I know some might not be sure whether to wait for a proven group like a.f.k. or pounce on Mazui if they show up first again, so maybe this will help someone.

Edit: The Mazui subs for episode three are out now. :)

a.f.k. actually subbed the baseball broadcast
"Bon Dance" (a.f.k.) over "O-Bon" (Mazui)
a.f.k. Kyon on Haruhi: "Why does a girl like her have brains? God did a pretty half-[arsed] job of spreading the wealth"
Mazui Kyon: "How is this person's brain so good? The assignment of stat points to people is pretty random"
"One of those rain-warding dolls" (a.f.k.) over "teru teru bozu" (Mazui)
a.f.k. Haruhi calls the guy who got the jobs "my man" and Mazui calls him "Uncle"
a.f.k. Kyon says there'll be mutiny if Haruhi is paid the same as the rest of them, while with Mazui he says there'll be a riot if they have to do it again

Aside from that, there were different sentence structures and general things like that, but I didn't notice them changing anything serious. Sometimes a line was phrased as a sentence in one set of subs and a question in another, but just as often it went vice-versa. (I'm not going through and comparing every single line, just giving my general impression. And I don't have the novel memorized offhand for comparison's sake, either. :P)

Overall I'll stick with a.f.k. in the end, but it's more because I like their font than anything else--and I don't see anything outright wrong with Mazui. (Again, maybe a much more hardcore fan than me would feel differently.)

Just watched it, and wow, one of the best of Haruhi really. At first, I was turned off because it looked like some random fanservice episode, but it proved to be fun to watch-- felt pretty fresh. In fact, it seemed more interesting then the last where stuff kinda just happened. The fanservice was also fun because it was not too distracting. Nothing world shattering happened, but it was fun to notice the very subtle change in Haruhi's personality. She seems a little less self-centered, but of course she can't being herself. ;) And she seems to have been channeling Konata with that randomness about eating cicadas.

Yuki buying the mask was a little thing that I like too.

And lol at the 69 shirt. Wtf!!! Will be looking forward to episode 3 and more sarcastic narration.

Just watched it... liked it a lot. I thought they were going to launch into a more serious plot, regarding Haruhi getting bored and those big monsters going around and crushing everything, but they didn't and I was so happy! :)

Umm... Why does Yuki hold that festival game gun backwards? Didn't know what that was about. She was super quiet in this ep, even for her.

And it really bugged me that Haruhi never took off her ribbon in the water. I don't know, that made me just want to reach in and yank it off... it looked so uncomfortable...!
