Well, Tom Cruise height is 1.68 cm, and Kenshin was something like 1.55 cm, anyway, it is a fact that small ppl is smarter and more spiritual advance, or thats what i like to believe :), im 1.70. :rolleyes:

that tall??? I thought he hadn't grown at all ever since he was 11 years old.(well just a tiny bit according to Mrs. Rockbell) heh with him complaining so much about his height. I thought he was 1.50m at most, if not 1.45m and that may cause problems if your brother is an armor of the height 2.00m+ ...
edward really shouldn't complain if he is taller than 1.60m...
heh also now that his metallic arm and leg has been replaced he can still grow to be a tall man, he is only 15... should he survive that long...

There's a couple reasons for this according to the manga.

1. Doesn't drink milk.
2. The automail that he's using is too heavy, according to Dominique. So if Ed gets lighter automail, he'll eventually get bigger.
But he drinks orange juice doesn't he?! :D

But isn't it a fact that one grows in one's sleep? Because when you stand up/walk, all your weight is on your legs. But when you are asleep, there is no weight on your legs. I hope you see where I'm going with this... :)

YuuOminae's second point is the correct reason as to why Edward is currently small in height at the age of 15. According to fullmetal-alchemist.com, it states that because they follow the principles of equivalent trade; what he loses in height, he gains in his abilities as an alchemist.

But I've been wondering, if Edward eventually manages to restore his arm and legs as well as performing human transmutation for Alphonse, the inevitable question might be; will he instantly grow taller? (I have a feeling that its likely to happen in the series :heh: )

No Way! He can't possibly be as tall as 160 cm. They make such a fuss out of how he's child-like in size, much smaller than everyone else that he has to be shorter than that. I'm 160 cm, so he has to be shorter than that since I refuse to be as small as he is.

you guys do realized that 5.4 ft isnt 5 ft 4 itch right?
u have to convert the 0.4ft to itch first.
so if ed is 165cm, so about 160cm without the antenna, it's about 5 ft 3 in.

male: 170.7 cm (approx 5 feet 7 inches)
female: 157.9 cm (approx 5 feet 2 inches)

Alot of you are complaining about Ed's height not being accurate because some of you measure around the same and can't accept that you're also short. If you really look at him he's about a foot(30.48 cm) or more shorter than most of the adult males. You chibi's just have to accept it and pick up my change next time I drop it,LOL. :fingers:

Thanks a lot for the Info kj1980, that is a lot more detailed answer than i expected, i dont know what's the average height here in Venezuela, racial traits are so variable that it's difficult to calculate, but i dare to say that it's about 1.77 for males and 1.62 for females, except Misses and Models of course, which are everywhere. I believe that i would feel more confortable in the Movie Theatres of Japan, i hope someday to take a visit, with my salary it seems i'll have to go swimming :sad: .

Odd you guys are talking about a 'animated character' how will he get taller you ask? maybe if the artist in change of the anime wanted him to be taller he would make him taller ooo wow that is a new one =)
One explanation why that wouldn't happen: The artist doesn't come up with the story. We aren't discussing the his height because he looks short, but because he always reacts negatively everytime someone says he's short. If you were a real FMA-fan, you'd know. :D

And we're also discussing the possibility of him (or anyone else for that matter) growing with a heavy metal arm and leg. So it's not ALL about the character.

Maybe you're so tall that no one has ever called you shorty? Ed is a character that we shorties can relate to. Al is a little too big for that. :)

that's not all true

i'm 5'9" or 5'10" and i know many things about stuff lots too.

however, according to my drivers licence i'm 178cm

once on a bus i stood up at the end of the line and i was clearly about 7cm taller than anybody else on the bus. i was alone, but i said out loud 'holy crap. i'm the tallest guy on the bus!' and this little guy about 5' said 'feels good doesn't it?' lol

anyway, as for edward, it's his thing. if he was tall he just wouldn't be edward.

he does seem smart, and yeah, i think there's something to that. anybody know of vash the stampede? he's tall, and well, lacking up top.

You look at the characters in many anime and think they might be about your height, but then you look at their profiles and you realize that you will probably tower over just about everyone ;)

I'm 180 centimeters, so most anime characters are pretty short compared to me :D

Okay... I'm short (about 170 cm), but no one has ever made that nasty jokes about me. It's more "small-jokes" than "short-jokes" for me.
"Oh, look!" (looks at some kids) "There goes [insert name]'s friends!". That's about as nasty as it gets. And that's nothing!

But I guess it differs with the different cultures. I live in Sweden, by the way.

This is very true.

The average height in Canada is about 180cm, but according to the previous stats in Japan they're significantly 'shorter' :)

I think the authors put that part aside considering the Anime doesn't really take place in Japan at all, thus, the comparison is global. IE, he's just shorter than average.

I'm 182 CM tall. Although no one in my family knows why. If you are 6.0+ beware japanese doorways! I had to duck quite a few times to get under them in japan. Although even in the US beeing this tall can be a pain in the @$$. God only knows how many times I have stuck my hand in my celin fan putting on a shirt :( (have to get a new shirt, celeing fan is always so dusty!)

Although I did kind of enjoy japan, no matter how crowded it got I could usualy see over people just fine :)

Not only that... if he can transmutate objects to fix them, why can't he take som scrap metal and make himself taller? I mean so that the automail leg gets taller and he has something under the shoe of his other leg. Like plateau shoes or somethings. That'd be a temporary solution and no one would call him short! :)

Ed cannot transmute his Automail parts too much. That is because he does not fully understand the workings of Automail. All his transmutations involving his Automail limbs are only superficial (extended blades/shields etc) and not the internal workings.

Bright as he is, his talents lie in alchemy. If you transmute, you have to know how the objects work to produce a functional product. So Ed cannot make a longer Automail leg. He can make platforms (plateau shoes) but that would be so obvious that it would become embarrassing instead.

I think they should dedicate one entire episode with Ed, Al and Winry trying to figure out a way to make Ed taller. It'd be like a filler-episode, like in Naruto when Sakura and Ino went out to buy flowers. That was TOTALLY stupid! But seeing Ed on stilts would be fun! And maybe if he falls down... he tries to take a peek under Winry's skirt? He's never shown any interest in girls in the anime, you know... :)

I think Ed's got too much pride to resort to stilts. If he does something, its never halfassed. So, I dun think he'd resort to artificial height. Hah. This coming from poor little 5ft3in me in my 2in high boots. I'm kinda hoping cuz of the power surge Ed got in ep22 that it sped up his growth. Automatic 3 inches!! Hehe. He's got hope of growing a bit more. Never too late for a growth spurt. And regarding peeking under Winry's skirt...I think he'd yell "woman?!" Maybe after that he wouldnt be so gender-shocked. :) I hope they have a height episode or at least a few scenes in one. heh. Maybe like a dream where he's taller than everyone else. That would make him happy for a while. Either that or even more frustrated.

Well I'm going for a general perspective here.

Asian people are short in general (in their native countries)
I mean look at the asians in America :P (such as myself I'm at regular height)

I went to vietnam 3 years ago and I am really a lot taller than the average person. Infact I went to the ammusement part there and they would not let me purchase a childrens pass ... (age must be 13 or below and I was). For Vietnam, the height is really effected by the nutrition that children get over there. It's like America where food and drink is this abundant... (sighs at the American society) Hereditary issues are also involved here as well.

Why not? I did! I was the shortest shorty in shortsville for years in highschool. Even some other shorties towered over me(though I had some female friends who were a bit shorter than me still thankfully). But now I'm an adult and thanks to freaky biology i'm 6 foot on the dot (pull out a micrometre and I'll take off my shoes - you'll find it exact :) )

So I got my wish. And now I'm a tall guy who NEVER EVER EVER ridicules or teases short people!

Only problem is now i know all these 7 foot giants!.... (sob..)

Why are so many people obsessed with height? I'm 5"6 and I think it's the perfect height. I can easily do things that tall people normally find hard to do like breakdance ;0 Also, it's easier to find clothes that fit perfectly :) The only thing you have to make sure of is that your girl is not taller than you :nono:

Even shorter than Ed would be Tetsu (I think that's his name) in Peace Maker Kurogane. I've only seen the first episode, but it seems he is very sensitive about his height too. :)

You got that right everytime someone thinks Al is the Fullmetal Alchemist and Ed goes berserk or when they say something like "that small kid is the fullmetal" and Ed goes "who the hell is the super small kid" it cracks me up :D

I think that FMA takes place in a europe like setting not japan, meaning most people are taller than 5'2", i know most of my friends range from 5'7" - 6'3"
Me a 18 year old 50% polish 25% french 25% swiss-mut stands 5'10".
Being as most people are taller than him and mistake him for a kid is like the old Slayers gag with Lina's chest size.

I think part of the reason he hates it so much are the coments and the fact that the other members of his family are taller too. I'm a female 17yr old 50% Polish 25% French 25% english. i always use ft for my height, but when someone ask for cm, im like "around 170 i think" but actually im 175!!!!!! (just calculated using google) ahhhhh i got ripped off by 5 cm!!!

Ed's not taller than Winry either, you know. They're about the same height. Maybe that's why he's so sensitive? A GIRL is the same height as he is! And all the guys are much taller!

aznndave: You're very welcome! But remember the calculator only writes in feet not inches (unless you change it), so if it's 5'3'', it's not the same as 5,3234324534 ft. :)

I think Ed is around 4'10"-5 feet because the story takes place like 40-50 years before our time or something like that, and the average teen would be shorter and average then was about 5' 3"

Ed's height WITH the platform shoes and antenna thingy is 165cm. However, what if he's not wearing shoes and he forgot to do that thing he does to his hair after a shower? That would ultimately mean he's... I'd say he's around 145 cm. (I chopped off 5 cm b/c I refuse to be shorter then a shrimp, even if I am one.)

Compared to other guys at his age, Ed is already a head shorter. (Comparing him to Ling.) If the average height of a japanese guy is 170cm, and there's a head less which someone already mentioned is about 30cm, then he would be 140cm WITH the atenna and shoes. Now.. chop 3 cm off for the shoes and 7cm for the hair... he's 130cm!! He's shorter then hitsugaya from bleach!!!! However, Ling probably hasn't reached his full potential yet so add 10cm. Yup, Ed should be around 140-145cm. xDDD

I am... 148cm at age 13, 14 in one month. I also doubt I'll be growing much anymore. I'm also asian... but I'm not sure if Chinese and Japanese heights are them same....
ok, I looked it up and yeah, they're basically the same.

P.S. I would rather Ed stay a pipsqueak!! He's much more adorable. =^.^= Him being all big and grownup... bleehh.. I don't like it.
