View Full Version : Good comedy anime
I need suggestions for something I'd actually enjoy watching, so I was thinking if there was any good comedy animes out there.
If you do not bother to read this post before posting your suggestions like most do, do not post at all.
What I've seen ( Actually i Have really bad memory so I can't remember much comedy animes.. ) ; GinTama ( Best so far ), Genshiken, Clannad ( Sunohara moments mostly ), One Piece and I suppose Welcome to NHK that i watched yesterday had it moments with Yamazaki and Satou sometimes.
I've found that best comedy animes that I had seen so far had the same voice actor Sunohara, Yamazaki and Shinpachi, and on Gintama/OP it was Zoro's VA. I checked the seiyu's career though, and couldn't find anything else. Something like Bobobo Bobo was listed but the torrent is not available anywhere with a sub.
What I do not want : Any anime made before 2000 because graphics are important. One Piece was exception but the art style is unique anyway.
What I hate : Ecchi and comedy related to that. If you list ecchi comedy, you obviously didn't read the post and thus the idea of a '' forum '' does not mean anything to you.
Thanks in advance :).

I suggest Lucky Star. I love the anime cause it was very funny. It's even more funny if you watch it in English dub, the English VA's were great.
Dubs are a big turn off for me. No matter how hilarious it would make the anime, I'll get a heartattack regardless if I have to listen to it.
And I've seen Lucky Star. MyAnimeList is really outdated but considering i haven't seen any comedy anime in a while, it should atleast slightly up to date regarding comedy anime. ( Btw. The list is old and when I was new user I messed up the tagging so no need to comment on that. )

What do you mean by Ecchi comedy? Because Fumoffu has plenty of ecchi but most of jokes don't have anything to do with it. (As much as i can remember anyway).
Just youtube it and see what you find.
What I mean is that if the anime contains ecchi at all, it's no good. I can't get turned on just by watching someone's panties flashing, and it's really meaningless. There's Hentai for that.
Plus most ecchi animes seem to contain comedy such as horrible example from H2O : The setting is obviously made just for the ecchi anime. Blind guy, accidentally touches someone's boobs = Time to laugh?? ( Doesn't make me laugh you know ). Or ; Accidentally trips over a guy and the girl kicks the guy's ass = Time to laugh ?? Again, it's not funny.
Wether there's comedy included in the ecchi scenes or not, it's still no good.
I'm looking for pure comedy anime. It may have other elements in it such as Slice of Life, Adventure, Action or anything. As long as ; It doesn't contain ecchi, and it's not mecha.
That's a shame, you're missing out on some gold stuff.
Hmmm... well i found the first series Bleach pretty funny. It's primarily an urban fantasy anime though (the first season anyway)
[edit]
Oops never mind. I see you have it on hold.
I'm not missing out if I don't like ecchi. You should realise that not all like everything that you do like.
Makes me wonder if I've seen all good comedy animes out there.. Gintama is still oncontinuing as well as One Piece, but that's about it. Seems that Minami-ke won't have fourth season either, and I haven't found anything about older series either except the one I mentioned.. Bobobo Bobo or something like that, that is not even subbed.. only dubbed. Also as it's so old, it's unlikely to have DVD release.
Detroit Metal City (http://myanimelist.net/anime/3702/Detroit_Metal_City)
This is a pretty funny anime. no ecchi here, only vulgar words :heh:
though I have to recommend Seto no Hanayome (http://myanimelist.net/anime/2104/Seto_no_Hanayome) The anime is funny as HELL, though the ecchi element is still there, but its realy kept limited. I mean really limited, I don't even recall seeing a single panty shot in this anime.

No I meant the comedy bits.
Ouran Koukou Host Club (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4148), Hayate no Gotoku!! (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=6413), Skip Beat (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=6103), Aria the Origination (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=5424), Nodame Cantabile (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4691)?

I don't see Jungle wa Itsumo Hare nochi Guu on your list. Guu (http://forums.animesuki.com/picture.php?albumid=115&pictureid=1078) is one of the funniest characters I've seen in anime. I'll also toss Moyashimon (http://www.animesuki.com/series.php/1116.html) into the mix. It's characteristic of the "campus hijinks" type of show, but you'll learn something about microbes and sake brewing as well. There's no panty flashing in this show, but one of the characters does wear a rather revealing leather outfit (http://www.takinganimeseriously.com/images/all-hasegawa.png), and sex is a subject that's discussed from time to time.
Oh! Edo Rocket can be very funny at times, but there's a lot of historical material and other stuff which some people might find tedious (not me, though). It's a science-fiction "alternate history" story set in 1842-43.
If you like cats, I'd strongly suggest watching a few episodes of Chi's Sweet Home (http://www.animesuki.nl/series.php/1189.html).

Your criteria are ridiculous. Even for most of the anime above, no one can guarantee that there isn't at least some kind of panties flashing going on. I can name lots of anime with comedy where ecchi isn't the main focus or even very noticeable, but it's still there. What exactly do you want, a Rated G anime?
We all know KyoAni is famous for no fanservice, so I'll second Lucky Star and also recommend K-ON! You should also take a look at Ichigo Mashimaro, although I'm not 100% sure if there are no panties shown. But in my opinion, Cardcaptor Sakura should have everything you want.
Take a look at World Destruction kuma. It's about a troubled girl and a bunch of strangers she picks up who together are hell bent on well...destroying the world kuma. If I recall correctly, the anime was released to promote the game kuma. At the time, World Destruction was being hyped because it featured Mayaa Sakamoto as the main VA kuma.
Don't poke the bear kuma!
Hehheh, looking at your list, you dropped and stalled on a lot of things I didn't care for ;p. You've also seen most of what I'd strongly recommend already. One thing I find weird is that you dropped Azumanga Daioh, I'd like to hear what you think about that... You also gave favorable ratings for a few comedies with a little bit of ecchi, which makes me think you'll tolerate some of it as long as the good comedy is there.
Anyways... Recommendations. Potemayo is an anime that doesn't have any ecchi, you could give it a try. I thought it was really weird and strange at first, but it grew on me. It has a really unique style(No ecchi, as in no panty shots, no boobs. There is a weird character who seems to care a little bit too much about his friend though... The characters create an awkward chemistry, lending itself lots of opportunities for deadpan comedy.) that could be a positive or it might lead you to dropping it really fast ;p.

Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight should be a good watch for you, since you don't mind a bit of slice of life. There's no weird characters or strange humor here, it's straight-forward and has more in common with the anime you've rated more highly IMO. One of the cleanest anime's I've ever watched too(Without coming off as being aimed only at children.

Perhaps I came across too harsh. I don't actually know that many ecchi series really but the comedy must not be based on the ecchiness. Good examples of this that I do not want are ; Tonagura, Asu no Yoichi, H2O ( omg.. ).
Also I tried Girl's High the other day. From two episodes I could say that the ecchi is not the main comedy part in the show ( Though there were some scenes.. ), but I don't like it when the camera focuses on people's panties instead of their faces when they're talking ; For example when they have tripped.
Also I've seen Lucky Star as mentioned, K-ON aswell and Ichigo Mashimaro for sure ( Though I think all these were listed in MAL anyway.. ). They're all awesome series, really.
I have Ouran on hold, and I don't really like Hayate no Gotoku, which kinda makes me sad aswell as it has Rie.. As you may wonder why I don't like it, there are several reasons ; Hayate is boring. The narrator is annoying, and talking animals make it too unrealistic ( in a childish way ), and that's annoying me even more.
Aria the Origination : I've had it for over an year for hold. Why, you ask ? Because to me it seems pure Slice of Life.. Where's the comedy ? I've also watched few episodes of Skip Beat and it's currently on hold.
Moyashimon : Just finished downloading this one. Picked it up because the main protagonist had same VA as Shinpachi from GinTama, Sunohara from Clannad and so on. I was, and still am a bit skeptic though considering Wikipedia has it tagged as '' Educational ''. First episode wasn't too bad though.
Thanks so far for the suggestions. Those that I didn't list here that is, as I haven't seen those. I'll be sure to check them out.
Lastly Ceral ; Azumanga Daioh... Ehh.. what a horrible anime, really. Most people seem to find it funny but I don't. Just simply, the jokes don't hit me, and I can't find anything funny in it. Plus the characters seem rather boring to me. It was such pain to watch five episodes to decide on dropping it. ( That's how much I usually give a series before giving up ). Don't take it to heart though, I can be really picky at times.

well, I have a few suggestions for you.
If you are looking for good comedy, and something that is not necessarily deep, Is funny, has action, and is unique, I have a suggestion that will really go out on a limb. you may not like the animation style (it is made after 2000).
Cinderella boy. - some people like and others hate, It goes out on a limb. unique style. do not read a summery, you might get an ecchi impression, but it is NOT at all (sorta). Try watching the first episode, If you don't like it, you wont like the rest of the series (12 eps i think)
or a COMPLETELY different take on the same underlying idea, Ranma 1/2
both of these have 'some' funny sexual situations, but not in the traditional embarrassing girly-anime way, in a comedic ha-ha way
highly recomend Cinderella Boy, and let me know what you think after the first episode
hope you enjoy

Actually I would recommend Full Metal Panic: Fumuffu! because all of the "ecchi" humor is segregated into 2 episodes: The Hot Springs episode (which reaches the level of parody with all the carefully arranged censorship, not to mention the gay jokes) and the final episode (and in that episode it's the final denouncement to a episode full of dark gallows humor).
The point is though that Fumuffu is episodic, so you can skip the 2 offending episodes without damaging the plot... Especially funny are the tribute parody episodes. One of which is based on Hamburger Hill, and another on Full Metal Jacket. (Apparently the author is a fan of American war films).
Of course to really appreciate Fumuffu you need to watch the first season of Full Metal Panic, which is not ecchi at all, it's an action adventure comedy. Except it does have several stupid gratuitous panty shots (that have absolutely no effect on the plot as none of the in story characters ever notice)- curse Gonzo and their stupid obsession with panty shots, messing up anime that shouldn't have it.
Oh and I guess the first season also has about 1/4 mecha, but Fumuffu does not have any so check out the first episode of Fumuffu.
Geez... I think I'm going to have to go rewatch that series again. Just thinking about the Rugby episode is cracking me up.
Wikipedia lists both of them as mecha though, and I can't express how much I hate mecha so meh ;(

Well... like I said I don't recall any mecha in Fumuffu.
Basically the plot of Full Metal Panic is that this girl Kaname is a target for terrorists. So Sousuke (the male lead) a teenager who grew up as a guerrilla fighter in Afghanistan (ie he has no social skills whatsoever) is sent to be Kaname's bodyguard in highschool. Hilarity Ensues as a paranoid Sousuke tries to fit into normal life, and Kaname suffers from his repeated errors in judgment.
No mecha in there is there? So why is it called mecha? That's because there is mecha in the military world that Sousuke left behind, and so it appears occasionally in the main storyline.
But Fumuffu is set entirely in the highschool world (it's a side series from the main storyline). I think the closest thing you get to mecha is the Bonta-kun outfit (a theme park mascot that appears in 3 episodes), and since you hate mecha you will probably crack up laughing (as intended).
Look... just give it a chance. give it 5 minutes.

Oh oops, your list wasn't in the first post so I missed it.
In that case, I second Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight!, my second favorite anime of all time. You might like Gakuen Alice, since that's just a nice anime altogether. There's several mentions of pantsu, but they're never...shown. Itazura na Kiss is another one that I don't recall any ecchi (but don't quote me on this). Sora no Manimani is a probably a comedy of some sort that doesn't have ecchi.
REC is a sort of a mature romance/comedy that doesn't involve ecchi. You might like it, or not.
Also, I really hate mecha but love Full Metal Panic and Fumoffu even more, if that says anything. I think the first series is an excellent mix of action, romance, and comedy where the flow is so good that it's amazing. The second series (Fumoffu) is just hilarious and is probably the funniest series I've seen, ever. There's little romance, action, or mecha in the second series at all. It just references the mecha from the first series and make amazing comedy from it.

@Sackett
Since Fumoffu is licensed, linking to a YouTube version of it violates the AS rules (http://forums.animesuki.com/faq.php?faq=rules#faq_rules_1_1). I'd suggest removing the link and letting the OP find it. I don't want to see you get a violation!
*Has already downloaded Fumoffu*
Thanks for the rest of suggestions, I'll be checking them out when my internet starts working properly u_u.
do you like random comedy? well since you liked lucky star you could try sayonara zetsubou sensei, gakuen straight, itazura na kiss, nodame cantabile, and skipbeat.

Heh, you're going to attempt to watch Fumoffu without the first series? I'm not sure how that quite works out, since a lot of the comedy material is based from the first series. For example, you need to view Sousuke as a complete war freak and not just a random student as he might appear in Fumoffu episode 1.

Well... the comedy is still there. You just miss out on the justification for Sousuke's paranoia.

agreed. Full Metal Panic had tree series: the original FMP, FMP: The second raid (sequal), and Fumoffu (they funny one). I would recomend you at watch the original FMP, I think it only had about 23 eps so it isnt that long. The original had some pretty good 'scattered' humor, but its was a 'action/drama' genre w/ some slight romance. If your not up to that I would at least recommend watching the first couple of few episodes to get the 'feel' for the characters, before jumping in on Fumoffu.

I actually I watched Fumoffu without watching the first series (still haven't watched it) and i still found it funny.
Sousuke being a war freak was something I kinda got immediately.
Wikipedia lists both of them as mecha though, and I can't express how much I hate mecha so meh ;(
You could probably ignore this long post, OP, by asking yourself would you find the main character beating up bad guys in a technologically-advanced, but silly looking bear-costume be funny?
I don't know if Fumoffu is the wisest thing to recommend... FMP is a full-on mecha, you'd lose a lot of context skipping it. And while Fumoffu is good, it has a lot of humour laced with an action subplot. The comedy revolves around the militaristic sub-plot that he needs to protect Kaname who is trying to live a normal life but could be under threat at any moment(due to circumstances from the first anime). You're gonna get a lot of action sequences that are turned into parodies in Fumoffu.
E.G. One of the episode plots, involves the main character mistakenly but comedically breaking into the mansion of a young rich boy. The main character, Sousuke, treats everything as a threat to his and Kaname's life because of his upbringing in a war zone. (In fact, if I remember right, in one scene he blows up a locker because he sees that it has been tampered with. When in actuality someone put a love letter there!) Sousukes' constant paranoid behavior which leads him to blow up just about everything in sight is always constantly testing Kaname's patience. One day on what is supposed to be a leisurely trip to the beach, his behavior especially urks her. So much so, that she decides to ditch Sousuke and hang out with a cute rich kid that she meets up with instead.. After being left behind, the main character, Sousuke, continues to spy on them, and perceives what he believes as the rich guy kidnapping Kaname. So what does he do? He ends up scaling cliffs, breaking into the house and battling wacky butlers in order to save Kaname. But eventually learns he did everything for not and only ends up angering Kaname even more. This is pretty much Fumoffu. As you can see, liking mecha/action helps you a lot to enjoy the show.
I'm not big on mecha, in fact I only watched because of that shameless plug by KyoAni inside Lucky Star, with the Bonta-Kun in Kagami's room... I don't particularly dislike mecha, but I don't seek it out. I was able to sit through the first season, and then watched Fumoffu, in the end, I found it enjoyable, about a 7 for me, a very decent rating by any standard but I wasn't wowed by it. I'm pretty picky, but Dist, you're as picky as I am and then some! Well maybe not when it comes to action anime... I see you have some highly rated ones with action sub-genre. So what do I know, maybe you will like it. Anyway, I don't know how I wound up writing so much. Hopefully somehow my post saves you time. Maybe more time than actually trying to watch the first series or by making you make up your mind faster.
Still accepting suggestions !
Been busy, only been able to check out Yakitate Japan so far though. More animes like this would be nice to have, doesn't have to have anything to do with cooking though, but some of these eps truly are hilarious with the excessive reactions to the deliciouness of the bread. Though I hope there is more comedy to come, I've reached ep 17 and only so far about 3 episodes actually were funny.
