View Full Version : Bakemonogatari - Q & A
This thread is for those of you with questions about the Bakemonogatari anime or manga. There are many questions that don't need a whole thread to discuss them. A simple practical answer straight from the anime or manga without any speculation can solve these connundrums. If someone has such a question about Bakemonogatari which can be solved by answering with facts from an official source, then please ask that question here.
Please don't post in this thread unless you are asking a question or answering one. Please remember that it only takes 1 person to answer a question. And don't speculate! You can only reply with cold, hard, merciliessly unforgivable facts. If you have to speculate, then please just tell the querrant that no answer is known, but here are some facts that might help him make up his own mind.

I know it's been said countless times, but exactly what character arcs will be covered this season?
Just wondering who else I can expect to see after Kanbaru gets her light.

It may be because your machine can't handle high resolution H264. Try watching the Xvid version instead.

The episodes that don't fit in the TV broadcast are apparently being streamed online, on the official site. Though probably not in great quality, but we'll see.

or there will be a second season?! (just a question xD)
Nope, it's been confirmed as five arcs for a while now. Second season is possible if this season does well, but nothing's been announced yet...
Will the 5 arcs be done within 10 TV episodes only or will the final 5 (BSG reference) for streaming be a part of the whole story ?

I don't fully remember the episode breakdown, it was posted a while (a while) back in the general thread, but I remember that the 5 arcs take up the entire 15 episodes, and that the last one is the longest.
@zato_1one: dunno, but we can only hope. Thus far all the content on the official site has been available to everyone, including the videos, but...
The episode breakdown is:
01-02: Hitagi Crab
03-05: Mayoi Snail
06-08: Suruga Monkey

Episode 1-12 will be broadcast on TV, episode 13-15 will be distributed freely on official website.

Yes, it sounds like your computer can't handle the video.
Try using coreAVC as video decoder and Zoom Player as your player, you may be able to solve your problem even if your computer is old.
Ok, how do people rate the various competing subbers? Right now I'm archiving 3 and I really feel like that's overkill even for such great a series.

I follow gg for speed sub. Even though it's speed sub but I actually prefer gg translation. Easy to understand and read. But for more quality, I will wait for Frostii (very slow). IMO

If I can't decide which group's sub is the best, I will head over to the AnimeDB site and check the ratings on all the groups that subbing that particular Anime. For now, Frostii is rated the highest, but they only release 1 episode. Koharubi is the second highest in the rating.

It's not in these two interviews, but the one in Pandora Vol.3. Shinbo said he want to do Kizumonogatari and Nisemonogatari anime if Bakemonogatari a success. Nisio Isin also offered to write him a manuscript for Nekomonogatari Movie if he want. (Two more sequel books was not announced by that time.)

Where is Senjougahara's father during Hitagi Crab?
Wandering around off-screen doing fatherly things?
It's been noted that background characters don't appear in this series (at the very least, there don't seem to be any background characters with dialogue in the novels, from what I've heard, and Shaft seems to be taking extra care to avoid showing them. Remember the OP that consisted of nothing but Mayoi, and the construction worker[?] icons that stand in for people in Kanbaru's flasback?).
Since Hitagi mentions she did work for him to earn money and whatnot, I don't think he's a bad father or anything. Just not enough a part of the immediate story to warrant an appearance.
Even important side-characters like Hitagi's mother don't get any lines or even proper character designs. No one has appeared in an episode other than the main characters and Koyomi's sisters.

Bit of a silly question but...
While checking the characters section in the official Bake site, I noticed that Senjougahara's name was actually written instead as Senjyogahara.
http://www.bakemonogatari.com/chara/
And was wondering wich is the correct one? :p
A mistake on the official site, or are both correct ways to write down her name?
TinyRedLeaf
2009-09-03, 01:48
That's likely a typo error on the website. Given the sheer number of obvious typo/spelling errors in the series so far, I'm not particularly surprised to find another mistake here. :p
Senjougahara would be the typical way to transliterate her name from hiragana.
Alternatively, we could write Senjōgahara, but that would be a bit inconvenient, given the need for one special character.
At first I though it was the Kunrei-shiki romanization system, which is the official system used in Japan. The internet tends to use another system which a lot of people think has more intuitive pronunciations.
Then I looked it up. It's just wrong.

Won't be there "Koyomi Vamp" arc ?
Is Tsubasa cat arc really that long ? (5 ep)
Not part of this season anyway. The anime is based on the Bakemonogatari novels, which have 5 arcs ending with Tsubasa Neko. Koyomi Vamp is part of the prequel novel Kizumonogatari, and therefore is not going to be part of this season.
Given how popular the show is turning out to be though, I'd be very surprised if they weren't thinking about animating Kizumonogatari in the future (along with Nisemonogatari etc).
I'm curious... someone remind me when the first DVD of this series is supposed to be released?

When I was learning Japanese my text book had 3 different ways that one could romanizise (sp?) Hiragana.
That way looks to be legitimate. I may get that text book out later and make sure.

From what I've read, they're important closures to the last arc and the overall storyline.... they simply had to have 15 episodes and only 12 fit in a cour.
I'm assuming our subber groups will continue their activities (though I wonder what the resolution of the webbed episodes will be).
I figure someone will do the DVD R2 torrents later... with the current economy, I'm really not counting on this one ever seeing R1 (though I'll order it delivered via rocket if it happens).

guess i'll ask this here, read through and dont really see an answer to it
I just d.loaded the epps of this that are out so far and only had time to watch a few.. kinda interesting but what the heck is with the stupid flash's with text? the animation seems quite poor as well. I did a little searching online and i guess the studio animating it, Shaft, is notorious for being quite cheap and spreading itself to thin. I saw an article about episode 10 having an absurd amount of those little text boxes, with a lot just saying 'scene missing' and next to no animation at the end
whats the deal with this? Is the studio just this bad quality? are they running out of time? Trying to play it off as a certain style seems like a cop out to me. Just wondering if anyone knew whats going on, im wondering if its even worth watching the rest of this

From what I've heard, it's mostly production scheduling problems and issues finding an outsourcing company. They seem to be pretty good on the financial end for this series, in terms of sponsors and all, so it appears they just ran out of time and manpower last week.
Some fixes have been made on versions of the episode that broadcast on other stations, and presumably it's all gonna be better on the DVD. Still, this series has overall, so far as my eye can tell, been significantly better animated than most of Shaft's other shows, and the finished parts of episode 10 were still high quality.

Go back and watch any number of SHAFT epics with Shinbo directing (TMP, PPD, Negima!?, Hidamari Sketch, etc) they *all* have these gaffs in animation/budget/timecrunch during broadcast. One can argue whether its "arty" or not. It usually gets fixed by DVD release.

These can be found on bakemonogatari official website, this is, for example the extended version for episode 11

Quite amusing but they don't have anything important for the story (for what I know). They will be included in DVD release in place of the shortened version for TV broadcast, I guess, so maybe somebody will sub those (not really confident I've still to see the extended version of some episode of Maria Holic).

blea well ive watched a good chunk of them now and i think im avoiding all future shaft releases. Honestly i find this show pretty interesting, but the animatino studio completely ruined it with their cheap time/cost cutting tricks. No its not artsy. I thought that at first but as it goes on they are longer and more drawn out and just basically in the way of what could have been powerfull scenes.
are ALL shaft productions this terrible or just ones with this sninbo guy directing? Id like a list or something so i can avoid any of his older stuff since im playing catch up on anime from the last few years, both fansub and comercial stuff. So like, will the DVD versions of these episodes have less random screens? Those were pretty annoying, they covered up some cool stuff.
And I hope I'm not the only one that's pissed about Nadeko getting the least amount of episodes.
Read through the four pages.... Shinbo's been pulling this "omg, the animation outsourcing sucks and we're past deadline -> goto SLIDESHOW effects of scenery" since Tsukuyomi Moon Phase (or even earlier). Some of the Slideshow cuts are arty and originally intended (like the freeze frames in the Sayora Zetsubo Sensei series or some of Hidamari Sketch interstitial moments or the text frame snaps in this series)... but a LOT of it results from the "omg..." effect above.
For a while some people (including me) just attributed it to terrible luck in outsourcing.... but with this series I've come to the hypothesis that the director Shinbo and/or his staff simply massively sucks at managing production schedules and routinely put themselves in this disaster mode. I've worked too many engineering projects where the "manager" inevitably created a crisis through poor skills and then "saved the day" with wild half-assed solutions that really didn't work for the long term -- and was often christened a "hero" for it. There's also the inflated ego aspect of this sort of character and we see that too.
I'm thinking Shinbo is that sort of guy at this point. Its a shame because they give him some wonderful titles to munch up. It *does* get fixed in the DVDs... so they seem to have time to FIX the screwups but not to AVOID them in the first place.
(Tsukuyomi Moon Phase, Paniponidash, Negima!?, Hidamari Sketch series, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei series, and now the Bakemonogatari series .... have I missed any?)

Id like a list or something so i can avoid any of his older stuff since im playing catch up on anime from the last few years, both fansub and comercial stuff. I can find production of shaft studio shows but again, is it EVERYTHING or just the stuff from that guy? I wouldn't avoid all these series -- many of them are wonderful. But I would seek out the DVD versions rather than the broadcast versions. Shinbo has done well with the Negima OVAs and SZS seems to thrive on this technique.
Shaft itself has a bit of a reputation for slipshod broadcast versions of series but my experience has been mixed (some good some not-so-good).
Don't forget Vexx you missed EF (Both of them). He definitely left the (Out of Time, it's B&W) stamp on the production. And he wasn't even the director.

You make it sound like they're screwing up on purpose. Bad scheduling is certainly not admirable, but neither is it intentional nor malicious. They're not doing this just to be jerks to the fans (unlike what happened with Haruhi...).

Bakemonogatari anime only covers two of Bakemonogatari books:
- Bakemonogatari 1 (Hitagi Crab, Mayoi Snail, Suruga Monkey)
- Bakemonogatari 2 (Nadeko Snake, Tsubasa Cat)
There're three more books, in case if they want to do the second season:
- Kizumonogatari (prequel—Koyomi Vamp)
- Nisemonogatari 1 (sequel—Karen Bee)
- Nisemonogatari 2 (sequel—Tsukihi Phoenix)
...and two more books are planned:
- Nekomonogatari (likely a prequel—Tsubasa Family)
- Kabukuminogatari (likely a sequel—Mayoi Jiansi)

Great, thanks for info.
Here I thought the novel has ended, it still has 2 more books to go.
Basically each book covers another oddity, except for the prequel(which sounds very interesting). Though, I am afraid that any series that introduces new characters every arc tends to lose its novelty very quickly.

The recent discussion about how getting a joke in japanese has been moved into the generic discussion thread (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=65733&page=76).

If you pay attention to the titles, it looks like there will be no more characters and future arcs focus on characters we already know (including his sisters, who haven't got much development yet).

From last time I heard, gg is gonna do the BD, but that could be on hold since they are playing Aion. THORA is also doing the BD, but this could be a joint w/ gg. Also, it may take longer now if subbers choose to do the second audio/commentary track written by Nishio Ishino where cast members comments whats going on as character.

I would go with bluray when it comes out, if it is done by a good group. If you want to watch it now, I would go with gg, but only problem is that the first few gg did not subbed the flashing text. So qIIq is a go alternative for the first few.

they shouldn't take on so many projects if they cant handle them. Its entirely their fault.

nope, but the american companies pay licencing fees to those companies to bring them over there. Doesn't hurt them at the time but if enough people dont buy releases from that company, the american releases will probably stop getting stuff from those studios.
to keep it still on topic, have any of the groups announced plans to sub the web episodes? is that even possible? Not sure how theyd capture the video...

No group has announced publicly. Last time I check, gg says that it depends on the quality. For capturing it, it will most likely be possible that it can be done, unless they create some new player that cannot be captured.

I never said it wasn't their own mistake, I just take issue with the way you act as if they're jerks who are doing it intentionally. If they didn't care about the quality of the series, they wouldn't have extended it to 15 episodes in the first place. Yeah, they screwed up, and no, that's not a good thing, but that doesn't make Shinbou a "douche" as you so eloquently put it, nor are production botches "company practices."
What I find annoying is that Shinbo keeps being treated like a cavalry hero when it seems that he's always standing around a disaster mode situation... when that happens in engineering circles, we start noticing that the "hero" often creates the disasters they fix. Unconsciously... but they love the "hero mode" and they aren't doing risk mitigation.
All I can say is that "thank the gods" they have always fixed it for the DVDs.

Rumor says Shinbo has record of delivery the broadcast tape five minutes before the broadcast start with SoulTaker, so... Directors that can't control the schedule isn't all that uncommon in the industry, Anno Hideaki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hideaki_Anno) is also famous for being absolutely sucked at schedule management.
Even though, in Bakemonogatari case, I don't think blame everything on him is the right thing; the studio and director signed a contract, production side (Aniplex for this, King Records for SZS) find the timeslot to broadcast, and when everything is settled and collision occurs, they can't just go "Hey, we can't do it in this season. Please cancel the timeslot." They're not that big.

I got my BRD of volume 1. It has the character audio commentary on both episodes by Hitagi and Tsubasa, scripted by Nisio Ishin himself. And those were hilarious, I felt like a watchin new episode. That the character commentary is worth the price of the Disc alone.
My question is are people gonna sub those? and make thread about it?

Yes, the animation is more fluid, more detailed. The random coloured frames were basically all replaced by actual animation. They changed some little things here and there. I've watched portions of episode 1 and episode 2 and one can definitely tell the difference. The ending in both episodes is the one we're used to (the big white representation of Hitagi in the background), which means it wasn't ready when the anime started. Also, in episode 2 the ending is the full 1:30 version, it starts after the episode ends, and not while the episode is ending like in the tv broadcasting.
Here (http://blog.goo.ne.jp/sweet-lovely/e/b28aff2ecc80181b9597fa47eac5fc56) some screen caps of the comparison from a japanese blog.

Just to make sure I following this right. It means the dvd release has like improved quality compared to what we have now? the DVD will be like a v2
Does it mean later on down the track we can just aquire the dvd version if we want the better quality episodes.
The DVDs always have higher quality for almost every series. And yes, you can buy them later if you like (or otherwise acquire them). They don't come with subtitles though.
I was just thinking
Seeing these last 3 episodes were going to be part of classrep-chans arc. Does that mean we wont be seeing anything of Shinobu ? . I was really interested to see how she came to be, what happened in the summer break with Arararagi. By watching the first OP, It appears she was once older than she is now and they had a fight. Have no idea how she became a chibi. Only hint you get I think is when Arararagi saids something early in the series of her being a broken down vampire or such. Could we expect to see it in OVA's/specials ? or maybe in a second series O_O

Embarrassed/shy around one of her onii-chan's peers? Thought she was his girlfriend? I'm not really sure myself but I figured it was something like that.

Basically what Suruga was saying: remember who you're trying to save. Basically, he can't save everybody, his original purpose was to help Nadeko, and that boy was the one who cursed her in the first place. As for that, there was a whole discussion in another thread, I forget which one, over whether he deserved it or not...

So in the end, he could only save one or the other. How cruel.
So in the end, he could only save one or the other. How cruel.
No, he wanted to save them both but he was only able to save Nadeko. It is not like he had to choose between the two, its it either both, one or none.

Not really... any good piece of literature ought to have something of a "pointless conversation".
It brings realisim to the work.
If you think about real life not every conversation you have is about "specifics".
Some of your conversations has to be about why you think you cant fit eleven clowns into the boot of a compact car.
Small talk... is something that makes good literature snappy, when it is done properly.

I read through all the pages and this one didnt seem to be covered.
The random cuts that cut away to saying " BLACK " " RED " and " WHITE " what do these mean exactly ? i figuered they were different from the " missing scene " cut aways and actully ment something. the closest thing i could come to conculsion was it represented time passing or some what. Black is a short amount of time, while red is a scene jump or some what. Am i on the right track ? :p
I think those were actual cut scenes that will get fixed up on the DVDs.
Nah, not all of them, especially considering most lasted for a split second; hardly worth inserting the extra two or three frames of animation. Some, perhaps, will be replaced on DVD, but I think the majority were just by way of scene transition. SHAFT-isms, essentially.
If you want to try to find a pattern, though, go ahead. There might actually be one, who knows?

Yep, some of those aka/kuro cards are intended, as shown by DVDs/BDs.
Shaft/Shinbo's works usually have an avant-garde approach to presenting.

its possible it could be random as SHAFT loves to do with their production, but im fairly certain theres a pattern involved, the " white " cuts as far as i remember only appeared in the more later eps ( around 9 onwards ) while " black " was extremely common and im pretty sure represents a small amount of time passing that we dont need to see, such a short convo ( pause ) then another conversation. And red was mostly when massive time gaps or scene jumps.
anyone seem to notice a pattern ? :p

Another quick question then, I heard that kizu was a relatively shorter book than bake, or at least a "faster read", so should we be expecting less episodes for kizu? The last 3 are being aired online purely cause slot they got for the series allowed for 12 episodes instead of 15, and they weren't in a position to argue for more was my understanding. And If I'd guess if kizu is short like you say then it would be either done as an OVA or stuck with Nise for the second season. And sadly I don't think it's slated for a date yet.

The credits are for the drama cd I think. She read the chapter titles. By the way, I agree wholeheartedly with your opinion about the certain VA playing Shinobu, let alone Kissshot...

Aren't you two being a little judgement against her?
I mean as of yet she hasn't even had a line for the character in the anime, so I am not really sure what you're judging her assumed performance off of .

There is a drama CD of Bakemonogatari.
It was made before anime is airing.
And Aya Hiirano is credited as "Shinobu" in the Drama CD.
Yeah, she has quite a few line there (CMIIW), but dont sure about the quality since i too havent heard the drama CD.

Sorry, if my bad english has made you confused. :)

I don't think Shinobu even made any non-dialogue noises. Not a single breath, groan, grunt, sigh, or mumble.

I'm judging her off of her performance from the drama cd, which may be a little unfair since there wasn't much for her to do, but it still gave us a taste of what she plans to do with the role. There's also the fact that I haven't been impressed with any the works I've seen her in up til now. I find her adequate in the roles she has done, but choosing her for Shinobu and especially Kisshot fills me with unease.

Yea, I argee, like you said the stuff she did in the drama cd wasn't really a lot but it doesn't necessary fit the image I got of Shinobu. I mean in the cd she sounds like a child that talks like a 4 year old, when she should a child talking like an adult.

What she's doing in the drama CD is probably what the director/sound director of the drama CD wanted. (reference (http://atemonai.com/blog/what-sound-directors-do/#more-2512), pts 8-13) I don't know how much input she has into the role, but chances are, not much.
That said, I haven't read the novels yet, so I haven't created a voice for her in my own mind yet...

this is probably asked already, but why are there so many unnumbered cuts? the red black and white ones and the cuts due to circumstances, is it part of a humour or something? cuz i really don get it when i first watched the series.
also there is a bunch of messages that gets flashed with the beat of the music, but it just goes too fast for normal people to read and understand(like me), does it have any significant importance to the storyline? cuz if not i will not pause my video to read each message:/

those red, and black cuts serves for two things...
1. those are replacement for unfinished scene that will be fixed in BD/DVD release
2. Shinbo's style of scene transision...
for those flash texts, it is the original line of novel, serves as additional information about the event on the episode...

Nope that is not manga...
That is its light novel.
Just go to the baka-tsuki and you can check that it's light novel.
And why was it registered as a manga?? O.o

someone may compare bakemonogatari to EVA. I have to say that they are both kind of some stream of consciousness. maybe the two directors are the same style. what do you think?

Coalgirls is 720p whilst THORA is often 1080p. However, THORA episodes are absolute space hogs. Each Bakemonogatari 1080p episode is around 1gb. Quality is insane though.

CoalGirls are doing 1080p as well, but they don't do well at getting them up in time.

Like Miyuki-ism said Coalgirls are doing 1080p as well and their bitrates are insanely high. My 2,66GHz Core 2 Duo chokes on some SSA-heavy scenes on their releases!
And 1gb+ is par for course in 1080p, you won't get much lower without losing quality in a very visible way. Unless you have a 1080p display I would say to stick with 720p since you won't really notice the difference if you downscale during playback.

Well I have a 720p monitor anyways. Although I really want a 1080p one....

No, 14 is NOT the last episode, there will be one more sometime before the last DVD release (end of March, if I am not mistaken).
Now to my question, for 14 are there going to be any subs? Has gg broken up again (it happen one or two times a year).

The remaining gg staff have said (http://loveisdongs.ath.cx/) that they'll try to finish their ongoing series, including Bakemonogatari, without the group leader.

No, it's the semi-final episode; 15 will be the final episode and probably air around the time last Blu-ray/DVD is released.
Edit: I didn't notice the next page and people answering this D:.
