Description: Has not aired yet (will air a half-hour early, though)
Jiraiya's past is depicted in this 1-hour special!
The time is the ruling era of the Nidaime Hokage. Having just become a Genin, young Jiraiya is assigned to Sarutobi Hiruzen's platoon. He watches Sarutobi's Kuchiyose no Jutsu, and proceeds to be completely absorbed in space-time
ninjutsu training. One day, Jiraiya loses his way and wanders to Myouboku Mountain, where he is given an audience with the Great Toad Sage. There, he comes to know that his own visit had already been predicted beforehand.
As expected the episode was pretty much all canon, covering all the flashbacks that should have been shown in the upcoming episodes.
I enjoyed it, maybe they'll do more of these "gaiden" series with other characters. It's an interesting way to develop their pasts instead of just cramming more flashbacks in during fights (sup bleach).
Finally nice to see Naruto's family animated and momentarily living. Hm... Kushina, red hair, from land of rain (I believe that was mentioned somewhere, if not correct me)... reminds me of Nagato.
Just watched ep 127 and its a sheer masterpiece . Its almost like an anime movie , beautifully done . The manga adaptation turned out actually better than the manga itself . I never felt so entertained watching/reading Naruto in a long long time .
I really want to know who the episode director whether Hayato Date or someone else . Simply because if it Date who was ghost directing shippuden in his place .

Excellent episode. I especially liked the second part. Jiraiya had a lot of memorable and meaningful lines. Myouboku Mountain also was an interesting and colorful locale.
Judging from the preview, next week is going to be one that's not to be missed.

wow....so those were naruto's parents?
WOW!!! This special was just awesome. Finally we get to see Jiraiya as a little kid, which he was so much like Naruto. And also the 3 sannin in action during the Great Ninja War period. But I especially liked the second half when Jiraiya meets Yahiko, Konan and Nagato and takes them as his first pupils.
Also some revealing info on the Rinnegan and the Sage of the Six Paths.:eyebrow:
Definately one of the most entertaining episodes in Naruto in a long time.:)
Nice episode, some good background story on Ero-Sennin.
I can't believe that no-one mentioned this but...

first part was great .. i loved it .. it was funny in Myouboku Mountain
the great lord elder: Who are you? :heh: what a sneaky frog, Pretended not to remember Jiraya but never forgot Solely Pervy :heh:
the best part in part 1 : when tsunade brother Nawaki died .. this flash back appeared 2 times (didnt count tsunade), one in orochimaru's memory, the othertimes in jiraya memory.. both of them got the same idea, they wanna spread the peace by stopping the war, but they choose different paths
2nd part was utterly amazing .. i felt a mixture of feelings
i loved the part when the children appeared .. they were so cute
*cough* i cant say more :uhoh:
orochimaru was amazing when he said he wanna master all jutsu & he wonders if humens cant be immortal!! he drew his path @ that time
best part : Naruto's parent ... Minato was cute & handsome, kushina is so beautiful even Jiraya fascinated by her .. this old perv :heh: he is like her father in law .. but this is Jiraya, no one can stop him when he see a beautiful lady :heh:
hahahah itz funny when Minato said i wanna name my child after ur story's hero
but jiraya replied "itz random name came to my mind when i was eating ramen"
itz kind say ur child will resemble the ramen 4 ever :heh:
i cant wait for next epi

Too bad next week is on break and double episodes on oct 8th
I love this episode <3
alot stuff happen there ...
I was really really impressed with 127-128. Cuz I read the manga usually the anime doesn't do anything for me unless there are good action scenes (I've hated all the fillers), but I like this anime adaptation even better than the original manga.

Speaking of which, does anyone notice that Jiraiya seem to have a LOT of freedom in his traveling not doing mission? Another thing that is nice on this special is that they got all the nagato flashback done here so next episodes will be pretty fighting with no flashback.

Is it just me or...
But in the manga, Jiraiya had met the orphans during the Second Shinobi World War and in the anime it states that it was the Third Shinobi World War, seeing as they showed a clip of Team Minato as well.

It was cool. Title should've been Jiraiya instead of Naruto just for the fun of it :D
It's been a while so I'm not too clear on it, but was it just the anime that showed Tsunade with the needy eyes when asking Jiraiya what he wants to do/ settle down? Maybe that was her big hint to him to try going after her again. Though he's too wrapped up in this destiny stuff :(

Oh.. oh god. That part when Konan was making her origami, and Tsunade's reaction as if it was a threat, the background music... epic. Simply epic.

yeah .. same here .. i was like :upset:
itz really an emotional moment .. they were just kidz lost their parents recently :(
& the background music :T_T: oh GOD, i cant stand any more
any one know the name of this music?!
I am so afraid of these series now
Kakashi Gaiden and this... such high quality works - they didn't mess up a single thing. The music was spot on, the action was not too absurd, and all the voices --
KUSHINA'S VOICE OMG
-- were also great.
I missed Jiraiya (as I know him in the Manga). I am afraid of this series because it's making me fall in love with it all over again -- and I can't help but get this nasty feeling telling me that, at the very height of it, they will mess it up.
Still, wow... 10/10 for both episodes. I even forgive the sloppy animation at the last few minutes.
Seeing Kushina made up for it, and then some.

So i just watche tales of a gutsy ninja, are those three childs somehow related to akatsuki? It seems as if the origami girl in rain country was that pale girl in the end. And those two boys were mixed into pain. Orange hair and weird eyes.
maybe pain needs the piercings to you know stick those two persons together. And that the disciple that would bring great change are those three students of him.

If they make the upcoming...20-30 episodes flawless, not only will I be impressed, but the eons of filler will have been worth it. Though I doubt their budget can keep up, the series even up to the the current manga chap, is entirely epic from here on. Just hope they don't find room for filler.

God, no. Watching an episode every week is much better than having to wait 2 weeks to watch both episodes.
These episodes came out better than expected. They were great!
Cant wait for the upcoming one and eventually... the great battle. :D
Very good episode. The eyes. Oh, the eyes. Nagato. Is that you Pein? But the hair style is all wrong. Yahiko? Since there are previous examples of successful eye-transplant, may be it's not too far out of an idea.
So how does Sharingan measures up to Rinnegan? I liked these episodes so much that I kept them on my hard drive for a second view. Would like to know more about this new doujutsu. We have Byakugan. We have Sharingan. And now we have Rinnegan. Here is what Jiraiya had to say about these eyes:
That eye said to hold the most noble of the three great Visual Jutsu..... Rinnegan. The Sage of the Six Paths, said to be the father of all ninja.... It is said that the Sage possessing the Rinnegan eyes developed all the jutsu known to us today. It was rumored to appear when the world becomes corrupt. It is capable of being both a godlike force of creation and an all obliterating instrument of destruction. I always believed it as mere legend. But here is someone who actually possesses the Rinnegan.
Pein had the similar rippling pattern in his eyes which would only indicate those were Rinnegan. If Nagato is indeed Pein, then we have a motif behind for why all these bijuus are being gathered. Even if it is Yahiko, the motif doesn't change.
P.S. Manga readers cannot help out in any way in this thread. Okay? :)

So how does Sharingan measures up to Rinnegan?
What's the question here? Jiraiya stated that rinnegan is clearly the best, number one. Nagato killing a chuunin is the best proof. Nagato had no ninja training at the time and he somehow managed to kill a grown up ninja. The awakening of the sharingan never gave instant win to the person who awakened them. Sasuke was saved by Naruto and Obito died, the sharingan simply couldn't save them. They were both trained ninja, even if only genins, while Nagato didn't even know what is chakra :)

God, no. Watching an episode every week is much better than having to wait 2 weeks to watch both episodes.
Considering the events that are to take place, I want more action all at once. Though I suppose I could just wait two weeks and watch them all at once :P
But that's missing the lively discussion per ep here.

That is the obvious reasoning, isn't it? And Jirayia is heading toward the Rain Country where the possibility of being intercepted by Pein ever so increases the chance for a one-on-one.....
Oh dear! Does Jiraiya has a spare of a chance even though he is the reputed legendary Sannin?
I think I'll start hanging around in the Naruto section of the forum a little more while this great ride to this story telling continues after soooooooo long.

I guess Tsunade was a little paranoid back than and it lasted till she was healed by Naruto. Come to think of it, she travelled the world aswell. Was she looking for Jiraiya? I noticed how often she asked him if he was staying in Konoha. She did that frequently.

So, Jiraya went AWOL for 3 years during the Ninja war (when his skills would be
badly needed) to train the 3 kids, then he just leaves them (including the
Rinnegan user), instead of taking them back to Konoha to become Leaf Ninjas?

Of course it was different!
He wasn't fooling around anymore and showed his true nature as evil Madara, not some silly Tobi.
So, Jiraya went AWOL for 3 years during the Ninja war (when his skills would be

Well, there is another way to look at his decision to stay with those kids. By participating in this war, he was only amassing on the mutual destruction and killing. By staying with those kids, he was giving them hope and a mean to follow up on their ideal. The main purpose of these episodes were to show what defines Jiraiya. He didn't lose himself and nor did he abandon the path he chose to walk on even though he was side tracked more than once in this senseless war.
So I can actually understand why he would want to bring up 3 kids for three years instead of inflicting destruction and deaths. He reached out to three individual and they listened to what he had to say.
Jiraiya was another instrument, granted a skillful one, to carry out this war. With those kids, he was a teacher. Yeap, his decision to stay with these kids make sense to me.

Even though these 2 episodes were kinda revealing for future, I'm still glad that they were shown now instead than somewhere in the middle.
Anyway I really loved the second part. It was really nice to see Jiraya's team together in action.
And I really loved all the scenes with those 3 kids^^
Especially loved Nagato/Konan moments and when they were fighting Jiraya's clone :p

Jiraiya hasn't been that annoyed since Naruto wanted to wear Gai's special outfit (which you can actually acquire in Naruto: Broken Bond!)... well, actually this has happened in the past, it seems it was the first time Jiraiya was that annoyed when the old frog forgot his name repeatedly just when he was about to tell Jiraiya about his vision... it was so funny, like "I had a vision about your future... who are you?"

So...this is an episode worth watching?
ufff....what can i say... from this point on, Naruto will be one hell of a ride...
This double episode takes some scenes from chapter 366... and since that chapter to the chapter of this week (465, almost 100 chapters!) we have pure gold!... now Naruto is another history, for almost all manga readers, this is a turning point in Naruto.
More than worthy.... it's MANDATORY to watch it! ;)

Well "Good news, everyone!", there won't be an episode next week :). We will have to wait until October 8th for a new episode (yes it is another double episode, no it is a Gaiden). Thankfully this will be the last break for awhile, and single episodes will start to be released every week starting October 15th.

Hmm, I must have missed that. Yes, you are correct, Jiraiya met and trained the Orphans during the 2nd War (this is the war Nawaki and Dan died in, btw), not the 3rd.

Yup, but that has zero relevance if you compare how this double episode introduce key elements for the future episodes... i can't wait to see how we will must avoid to spoil anything about the future episodes, right now i'm about to explode :heh:

The only thing which disappointed me was that we really didn't get to see how powerfull Jiraiya's opponents were. I would guess on the level of Kakashi if they gave Jiraiya that kind of difficulty but they seemed like ordinary random shinobi.
I also liked to see Orochimaru once again. Something was also weird...Naruto was about to get born (scene with Kushina) but we've seen Orochimaru still in Konoha in one of those scenes. He was supposed to be out of Konoha before Minato was having a son right?
Or was Minato Orochimaru's rival for the title of Hokage?

I think there's a time jump between the final scene with Orochimaru and the scene where Minato reads Jiraiya's book.

Aw hell yeah... those episodes were awesome. It actually made me more excited about some of the manga chapters I've already read. It's a reminder of how good this series can be when it's not dicking around.
Also, I can't believe I didn't consider previously how the Rain orphans also fit into the same trio pattern as the Sanin, Team Seven, and The Fourth's team. One loud kid, one eyeball power, one boy with talent and one boy with ambition, and one girl.

Just as a head's up, the VAs for Tobi and Madara are different :). Tobi is played by Wataru Takagi, and Madara is played by Naoya Uchida.
I do not think there is any significant reason for this, though, besides the fact that Tobi's VA doesn't have the voice for Madara (and vice-versa)...

Yes there is. Jiraiya's hair style has totally changed and he has finished his novel and already says that it did not sell good, which means he can look back on quite an amount of time.

So did Jiraiya choose naruto for the hero of his book because it was close to the name nagato? My statement the other week about naruto looking like pain has a certain amount of irony now. A 2 letter difference? You could easily say they were brothers in some cosmic sense.

Is Jiraiya really Naruto's grandfather or does he mean like a surrogate grandfather? Minato and Jiraiya do look alike with the hair, but he just doesn't seem like the type that would settle down and be a father, even if it was for a short period of time. I think him being Naruto's godfather makes a lot more sense.
Alchemist007
2009-09-28, 01:11
Well...that's all they said, godfather.
That was probably one (or rather, two) of the best episodes I've watched so far, I was expecting filler material actually but I was surprised that they passed up on that chance and kept going with the story. The extra parts were also good (+1 for Jiraiya's encounter with random nin), emphasizing his feelings at the time and everything he had to go through added to the emotional part...seeing Naruto's parents at the end was a nice bonus too, almost as good as the preview for the next episode^^
10/10 from me, I get the feeling we won't be having something like this for a long time.

2009-09-28, 03:35
I am not sure exactly what I felt about this episode. On one hand, there was some very good character development for Jiraiya. His quest, and it is/was a quest, to find an apprentice held some deeply powerful thematic messages concerning war and peace and the destiny/fate of mankind. Whenever the story focused on this, I couldn't help but sit up straighter and pay attention, especially when it became clear that while the big questions were being possed, the very ambiguity of even the possibility of an adequete answer was also being addressed. Truly a real world dillema that transfers quite well into this fictional piece.
Additionally, I liked how the various seemingly random shinobi that Jiraiya encounters all have their own versions of how to attain peace, if peace is even attainable. This is some nice "realism" in this fictional world (I say "realism" because it is nice when the main characters do not have answers, and the author acknowledges that there are no real clear cut answers available).
I also have to say that I really liked the colour of Nagato's hair in the anime. In the manga it never looked that good, but in the anime it looks quite nice (in fact all the Orphans look better in the anime than their manga counterpart (though, I think Konan's eyes might be the wrong colour).
That being said, I did have some problems, or at least 2 main problems...
First of all, the voices:
I had a lot of problems with Houchu Ohtsuka as the younger Jiraiya (after he had completed training with the Toads and went on his quest). His voice is perfect for the older Jiraiya because it sounds sure and confident as well as aged and mature but still with a good sense of humour. With the younger Jiraiya, though, who is shown as being very unconfident and unsure of not only himself but also the world, the voice was simply too mature.
I also really disliked Mitsuo Senda as the Great Toad Sage. The voice was not really humourful, nor was it wise. It just sounded like someone going through the motions, trying to act but not really succeeding. I was also not really a big fan of Ikuo Nishikawa as Fukasaku for similar reasons (though these critiques may change if the characters reappear several times).
Finally, I did not like Wataru Hatano as Yahiko. This was another case of a voice sounding way to old for the character (who is supposed to be 10 or so).
Secondly, it was the 2nd war, not the 3rd (and other potential mishaps):
While I applaud the anime team for creating so much back story for the various people Jiraiya meets along his quest (especially the puppet-user, for various reasons), I can't help but feel that Kishimoto, when he writes the next data book, will give completely different backgrounds (etc) for the various characters that Jiraiya meets, not to mention a completely different time table for their meeting (maybe Jiraiya meets them after he trains the Orphans?)), which leads to my next point.
I know this was mentioned earlier, but it bears being mentioned again, Jiraiya and the other Sannin met Hanzou and the Ame Orphans during the 2nd Great war, not the 3rd. This is a big mistake on the story writers part, because it messes with the internal consistency of the anime storyline. Now, instead of their being a break in-between Jiraiya teaching the Orphans and Minato, either he taught them at about the same time, or the war lasted for many many years.
In the end, though, I do think this is probably one of the best overall episodes I have seen in quite awhile. It gets a 074/100 from me, which is higher than I generally give Shippuden episodes (though the last few have been ranked pretty high, at least for me :)).

the fact when Jiraya got the scroll from the little green frog then told Tsunade and Orochimaru that the 3 chidren died mean Tsunade & Orochimaru knew everything abt those children & their power. (especially abt Nagato's eyez Rinnegan).
So when Orochimaru joined the Akatsuki & meet Pein & Konan, he must remembered them, @ least reconized the Rinnegan eyez. as one of the greatest ninja in the world, i expected him to remember.. so i have 3 possibly answers:
1- he considered meeting someone with Rinnegan eyes as a coincidence (Oro: why Jiraya always found the coolest & unique things .. i also found Rinnegan eyes not just him !!) ... sounds not like him right? :heh:
2- he remembered them but didnt care .. there is no effect to him.
3- he remembered them but pretending not to pay attention but in fact he avoiding them until he master all the jutsu he need to attack them & take the control of the organization.
but the question is: Did they remembered Orochimaru?!
Other add:
I wonder if Nagato linked by relatives to Kushina?
haha but what was funny in this episode was that Jiraya owned Minato XD the scene when minato was reading and there was "my name is..." bumm Minato owned XD (Jiraya was faster than minato :P:P)
Anyway sad that Naruto didnt had the chance to meet his mom... she is very pretty and for sure kind...they used nice voice for her......... but sadly we wont see her again for long time...

She blushed. Just why did she blush when she faced Jiraiya? Hinata always blushes when she sees Naruto. Geez, Naruto's mother was a pervy! :twitch:

No, there is no relation between kushina's blushing and pervy
she just felt bashfulness and coyness when she faced Jiraya coz it had a long time since they met each other .. as Jiraya said to Tsunade in previous epi, he remembered Kushina as talkative young girl who acting like boys :heh:
so when Jiraya saw her he shocked like he didnt believe his eyes, she was completely different than what he remembered and she just blushed bcoz he is a sensie and for sure there were memories happend between them when she was young. :D
this is life; if we dont see some people for long time, we just feel confuse and blush when we meet them especially when they're older than us like our doctors, teachers, babysitters :heh:

this was a great special!! Worth the wait!!! Sop finally Naruto has gottne interesting once more. It was great character development, or it atleast explained how Jiraiya became the man he is now. I dunno. I do a lot of traveling, and for the whole reason of being young. A few people in my family are pretty much against it saying its dangerous to leave the US and stuff such as that. But I do so anyway. Tell you the truth the story of poverty, and struggle is the same and its everywhere. Even in countries like the US, and JApan. I dunno. But this episode actually gave me some kind of inspiration, and trust me I never draw upon anime for such things.
i think jiraiya trained Paine though I Can't say that for certain XD

Why do people think this is a filler. This arc isn't a filler, it builds up to the upcoming Pain saga. I personally preferred the Kakashi special episodes but i do admit the life story of Jiraiya is touching.

Well i watched the episode last week with my younger brother who watches anime only whenever i tell him good ones will appear :) and the first thing he said at the end was... no!!! (they died??) noo!! they turned evil?!? At first he heared they died and then they appeared in Akatsuki.
Still i truly wonder who or how Jiraiya's informants work. Are they similair to Juugo's animals who talk to him? But in Jiraiya's case someone or something actually writes scrolls for him.
Also.. i was amazed by the fact that Jiraiya did something so crazy to get stuck for a moment in a wormhole.
It hasnt been explained yet but i truly wonder if Minato Namikazes Hiraishin (teleport) works like that..in fact... yes i think they do..right??

I know this was mentioned earlier, but it bears being mentioned again, Jiraiya and the other Sannin met Hanzou and the Ame Orphans during the 2nd Great war, not the 3rd. This is a big mistake on the story writers part, because it messes with the internal consistency of the anime storyline. Now, instead of their being a break in-between Jiraiya teaching the Orphans and Minato, either he taught them at about the same time, or the war lasted for many many years.
The only wrong sentence in the anime is at the end of episode 127, when the narration says it was the 3rd ninja war that started, but in reality that was the second.
The second ninja war started when Jiraiya and his team were young and not as strong as they were later, so their combined power couldn't take down Hanzou, i guess the strongest konoha ninja was without a doubt the 3rd hokage at that time. When the 2nd war ended Jiraiya began to train the 3 orphans for 3 year, after that he left to go on a journey, where he found out that peace is only temporary, so there will inevitably be a 3rd war. Then he went home and had a team to train, among them was the young Minato who will become 4th hokage in very short time. Sannins did fight together in the 3rd war, this time had much more impact, we see that in the anime as they summon their boss summon and win the battle with that. However Minato became even stronger than the sannins, and he became the strongest of the village. That's why Orochimaru left the village when the 3rd didn't give him the hokage title but gave it to Minato. As it was hinted by the anime, at the end of the 3rd war Orochimaru was already experimenting on ninjas to become immortal. Minato surely was impressive, when the sannins were at his age in the 2nd war they weren't near as strong as him, since the 3 of them couldn't beat the leader of a smaller village.
Assuming that Jiraiya began teaching Minato about 7-8 years before the 3rd war started, and also Jiraiya was on his journey for about 2-3 years, and he was also teaching the orphans 3 years, that means there were 12-15 years between the 2nd and 3rd ninja wars. My assumption of 7-8 years is based on the fact that if Minato was 12 years old when he left the ninja academy and Jiraiya began teaching him then at the start of the 3rd war he would be about 20 years old, and i guess he had to be at least 20 years old to be given a team to teach, that is assuming Minato began to teach Kakashi,Obito and Rin shorly before the 3rd ninja war began. He had to, because at the end of the 3rd ninja war Kakashi was already jounin and Minato was already a legendary ninja. Well this is all just my assumption about the timeline, i wonder if the data book gives an exact timeline.

That's a pretty good assumption i guess but Minato was probably not 20 when he trained Kakashi's team but more like the age of the current Naruto and Sasuke. I think the databook said something that he graduated or became a chuunin at the age around 10..hold on i'll take a look meanwhile... :p
Oke well he indeed passed at the age of 10 but it is unknown when he became a chuunin. But i still guess that he was around 16-18 during the Kakashi Gaiden and became around the 19-21 Hokage. I think his ruling didnt last even 2 years.
It is also unknown but i would guess that when Jiraiya visited Minato and his wife that he was already Hokage. Unless his ruling didnt even last 1 year.

Good question.
For the most part the special followed manga canon, if only deviating by adding a bit of anime flair in fleshing out the story.
I gave it a 10 because I love character backstories.
Great episode indeed! I enjoyed the mix of canon and anime-only information that very wonderfully fleshed out more of Jiraiya's backstory. I agree that the timeline was rather confusing though.
The only disappointment was that ... well, I was rather hoping to see Jiraiya's introduction to Minato (and maybe the rest of the team). Also that, after raising such an extraordinarily powerful and obviously kind and honorable shinobi like Minato (and someone poised to become Hokage ... or should have already been, by the time Kushina was carrying Naruto), did it not occur to Jiraiya at all that perhaps Minato was the prophecied student?
^ Well he did take Minato as his student...

@Kafriel: And even if he did, Minato kind of went and died (much the same as the Ame Orphans). So, that kind of ruled him out (unless you go the "Darth Vader balanced the Force" angle (instead of "Luke Balanced the Force")).
You know what they say, "if at first you don't succeed, keep looking for the prophesized one in whatever possible student you find along the way.", or something like that...

Am I the only one with the notion that Jiraiya fullfilled the prophecy at the get go? The kid with the Rinnegan will either bring unimaginable destruction or ever lasting peace. Yondaime was a very talented ninja who gave his life for his village. He didn't, however, play a catalyst to fullfil the prophecy Jiraiya was/is fated to. All things point to the dude with the utlimate hax0r Jiraiya is probably going to be intercepted by during his travel to the Rain country. What that hunky looking fellow does later should follow up on the grand scheme of things like collecting all these bijuus for whatever purpose.
I got more theories if anyone is insomniac. They will put you right to sleep. :heh:

So as far as the prophecy goes Jiraiya's students include: The Ame kids (the current condition of two I guess is not entirely known), Minato (deceased), and Naruto. And who knows if anyone else will show up :heh: But from that list it appears pretty solid that if the chosen one is of the Ame/Akatsuki, the world is screwed, and if it's Naruto I suppose he'd be the good guy who'd save it if anything.
james0246

Yeah, like I said, either the whole prophecy thing will be very straightforward (Character X will destroy or save the world), or it will be all subtle like (Character X will help the individual that will go on to save or destroy the world).
Whatever the case, I really hope that Jiraiya did already teach the ol'Chosen One, because the whole destiny thing mixed with a potential bad guy (Rinnegan user) sounds pretty neat, plus it would have Jiraiya/Naruto fighting against destiny, and that's always fun...

You shouldn't base base your assumption just on a list of known students. It's always better to base your assumption on a more general view, on Jiraiya's character. This guy is so much more of a good person than the other two sannins that he chose to help 3 unknown orphans instead of going home and have fun while it's peace time. Orochimaru wanted to kill the orphans and Tsunade just didn't want to care about them like they never existed. But Jiraiya stayed with them just to help them, he didn't want to train them to be ninja, and he didn't know if they have any ninja talent. It was not until the incident with the rock chuunin that Jiraiya realized that it was fate that he met Nagato and decided to help him, that's when he began to train those orphans. Jiraiya does not chose children based on their quality/bloodline, he helps anyone regardless of what he can get in return. He is the opposite of Orochimaru, and Tsunade is just average in this aspect of human character.
@Kafriel: And even if he did, Minato kind of went and died
I know it's said that he sacrificed himself to save the village and all, but what's stopping me from cracking on about how that was just a KB and the real Minato is actually a henge'd stone at myobokuzan? :heh:
