View Full Version : Rmvb ?
OK, I'm downloading the Naruto 58 which just popped up, it's at about 5% now but I'm wondering how I'm going to play it. I looked up the extension .rmvb, of course it's a realplayer extension. I use Media Player Classic which has support for RM files, but I haven't installed RealOne or anything like that. I've really been trying to avoid doing a RealOne install, it's bad stuff. Is there any way to get the codec without installing the program?

It's not legal, but search for RealAlternative. If you're able to play Real files in MPC already, RMVB should play.

If you install the RealMedia Splitter, yes. (MPC has this built-in.)
Thanks, I installed 1.04 from
http://reformed-theology.org/downloads/realalternative.htm and it seems to be playing fine. It has the splitter included as the install, also an older version of MPC which I elected not to reinstall. I'll be redownloading when this is encoded with a free codec...

I downloaded Real Alternative but whenever i click on MPC, 2 warnings pop up the 1st is "a device attached to the system is not functioning" and the second is "The MPLAYER.EXE file is linked to missing export DDRAW.DLL: DirectDrawCreateEX." im wondering in whats going on and how to fix the problem since i already installed Real One resulting in audio and no video so I uninstalled it. Plase what should i do?

rmvb is the media compression equivelent of microsoft windows. only with significant effort can you attain any compatibility, and if you are using those files then there is nothing you can do with them other than watch them. they are compressed in such a way that editing and conversion becomes an absolute nightmare.
as much as i promote change etc., something as monopolistic as this does not get my vote.
Ahh, in case it helps anyone, there is a newer "version" of RealAlternative, and some other stuff, at http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/mirror.htm . Of course if you don't mind using RealOne and it works then just use it.
I've already downloaded a replacement for the .rmvb version, but I did think the visual quality was as good as the replacement which was 50% larger. At least Real did something right... but having to use "illegal" codecs or install a proprietary player is bad. Die Real Die!!
