Just thought I'd make this little thread, and hear of your opinions for your favourite anime of 2009. Hopefully I'll see positive feedback.
I'll have a think and post mine in the next couple hours.

Currently a tie between Clannad After Story and Cross Game, something that isn't likely to change, though I assume Clannad should be considered as 2008.
The best is probably Clannad After Story for me too.Tokyo Magnitude was close, and we still have one more month of anime to go.

It was very risky to include fanservice into saki (if it wasn't already in the manga) but it works for me. I may have a few other seconds for 2009 (like seitokai no ichozen, K-on or even railgun) but I put saki at the top for now.
Not many good anime this year so slim pickings I would say Eden of East and Phantom . Will give a detailed reasoning behind this soon : D
My favourite by miles is Umineko no Naku Koro ni. Always loved genres like psychological and supernatural within any anime. Not forgetting the mystery behind the murders on Rokkenjima (the Cluedo version of Higurashi I often think). Trying to explain their deaths in human ways of dying, Battler, he's a interesting character for this.
I've enjoyed a few other titles myself this past year, which makes it hard to narrow down. I'll post more later.
Eden of the East, and Bakemonogatari. I also think Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 deserves an honorable mention aswell as Clannad After Story (if that one counts)
Bakemonogatari ranks highly... I'll also include Eve no Jikan though it actually spread over a couple of years. Both of those are memorable and unusual.
As a carry-on sequel, Spice and Wolf 2 was good but not have as much impact as the first season.
Cross Game seems to have staying power as a longer running daily life drama. Kimi ni Todoke is still under review... after all, 2009 isn't over yet so the OP question is kind of premature :)
I have a longer list of anime I enjoyed but that has less rewatch potential (e.g. TM8, Saki, K-On!, Kanamemo, etc).
I would have to say either Cross Game or Bakemonogatari so far.
The first place IMHO goes, without a doubt, to Cross Game. However, Bakemonogatari comes in a very distinct second place, this year.

While overall I like Spice and Wolf more as a show, I'd have to give it to Bakemonogatari as that made the biggest impression on me this year. I'd place Spice and Wolf II as second.
I'll give an honorable mention to Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. Even though I dropped this show it was the closest show this year (amongst the tons of shows I dropped) at keeping my attention almost the entire way through.
Well from the 2009 releases my Top5 so far is
Spice & Wolf 2
Cross Game
Hajime no Ippo
K-ON
Bakemonogatari
If you put the Winter Releases of 2008 in its by far Clannad and will be forever :)

Higurashi Rei and Clannad After Story. Nothing else has really impressed me; the only other series I'm actively following is Umineko, and I'm just watching it whenever. It's the only other series I'd call "good" but that's kinda stretching it. :heh: The new Shana OVA was a nice break too, I guess.
Looking at the charts for this fall and winter, I really don't see anything of interest, so probably will watch very little anime at all. Overall, 2009 was pretty meh in anime for me.
My personal ones are:
1. Cross Game
1. Kemono no Souja Erin
3. CLANNAD After story
I can't decide for first one D: However the first two must be really good when Proto, the KEY fanatic as styled by monir puts the best KEY adaptation to date in third place. :p
Of course there are many good series this year, specially the ones from last two seasons (this season has been like a complete miss for me :heh:), however those 3 really stand out among the crowd.
So far:
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Bakemonogatari
Darker than Black R2
Toaru Majutsu no Railgun
Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou
Cross Game
..that's it.

Like many others have already said definitely Cross Game.
It's not really hard to pick my favorites anime this year as there have been dozens of disappointing shows so far.
1. Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~
2. Darker than BLACK - Ryuusei no Gemini
3. Guin Saga
4. Canaan
I don't really feel like giving any special reasons, but I think you'd get what type of anime I prefer judging by my favorites.

Dragon Ball Kai isn't getting enough love in here. :(
Throw out what you know about DBZ...DB Kai is another beast altogether.

Cross Game is currently my favorite anime of 2009. The show has unbelievable character development. One episode in, you fall in love with the characters. The quality of the story and the pacing is consistently good. Runner-ups Bakemonogatari and Spice and Wolf II have problems with their consistency in pacing. The OP (Summer Rain) and ED (Koi Kogarete Mita Yume) music are emotional and powerful. They rival Tabi no Tochuu and Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari (Spice and Wolf OP 1 and Bakemonogatari ED 1). Its baseball/sports theme is handled really well for sports fans and non-fans alike, and thus, I consider it a strength of the show. I feel its only weakness is in its visual art style. Its vintage traditional art-style takes some getting used to when you start, but it grows on the viewer. I happen to think the art design is perfect for the show. Its clean, modest style complements the show's nostalgic and constantly (for lack of a better word) good story and characters.
Honorable Mentions: Bakemonogatari, Spice and Wolf II
Disclaimer: Cross Game isn't finished yet so this could very well change, just like Bakemonogatari isn't finished yet. As of now, these are the placings for me.

is it a bad thing if i don't remember what shows i watched in the first half of the year?
i enjoyed/am enjoying:
Saki
TM8
FMA
Nyan Koi
Kimi no Todoke
Railgun
Sora no Manimani
my favorite out of those would probably be Sora no Manimani actually.

Not that I've seen all of the 2009 productions...
My vote goes to Bakemonogatari. Its the one show I don't mind watching 3-4 times.
The only other show in 2009 is Seitokai no Ichizon.
Eden of the East, Time of Eve, and... my god, that's it? This is kinda sad. Bakemonogatari, while enjoyable, could have been a top pick if only the animation (or lack thereof) wasn't so inconsistent. Not yet sure about Kuchuu Buranko, while Aoi Bungaku's narrative feels too heavy-handed for my liking.

i would have to say my top series this year were
1.Bakemonogatari

4.Kimi No Todoke

Spice and Wolf

Haruhi Suzumiya (2009)

I didn't like Spice and Wolf S2 nearly as much as the first season. For me, Bakemonogatari comes in first for its uniqueness with Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou as second. I can't say for the shows that haven't finished airing, though I see some people have chosen these shows as their favorites.

I have only watched ToraDora! and K-On! (as well as the Hitagi Crab episodes of Bakemonogatari. I didn't like it though.) So, it would have to be ToraDora! for me.
My personal ones are:
1. Cross Game
1. Kemono no Souja Erin
3. CLANNAD After story
I can't decide for first one D: However the first two must be really good when Proto, the KEY fanatic as styled by monir puts the best KEY adaptation to date in third place. :p

*gasp*
Sorry Proto but Clannad: After Story still has me on lock for number 1 anime but I think it's still considered a 2008 anime, it's tough to say though. If After Story never showed up, I would easily choose Cross Game as the number 1 anime of 2009. Incredible series and extremely underrated, any one who hasn't watched it yet has to look it up and start watching this wonderful series immediately.
For me the list its like this:
1. Darker than Black2
2. Eden of the east
3. Cross Game
4. Natsume
5. Tokyo Magnitude
Eva-Beatrice
2009-11-12, 22:02
Let's see...
1.Umineko no Naku Koro ni
2.Darker than Black 2
3.Fullmetal Alchemist:Brotherhood
4.Kämpfer
5.Pandora hearts
6.07 Ghost
Bakemonogatari and Spice and Wolf II are my two favourites for the 2009 year. I'll probably lean slightly more towards Bakemonogatari for originality, as it was presented in a different, unorthodox manner. Spice and Wolf II, albeit brilliant, largely rode the flow from the 1st season.
Honourable Mentions to Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou and Clannad After Story. However, Clannad After Story is technically a 2008 anime since it started in October. Likewise with Spice and Wolf II, Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou largely rode the flow from the 1st season.
EDIT: Watching through Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 atm and it seems to be a underrated series. Depending on how it ends though, it may be worthy of a honourary mention.
I also see a lot of people nominating Cross Game as well. I was turned away from it because I dislike sports anime, particularly ones that go on for 50+ episodes (which was how Cross Game was described to be on synopsis), but apparently it is different, so I may give it a shot in the future.

Cross Game. In a very weak year, it's the clear standout from the field. I don't put it quite on the level of the top series from a tremendous year like 2007, but against this competition it's the clear winner - and it would still be a great series any other year, too.
I would say the first half of TM8, pre-shark jump, is the best short run of any series this year - but it couldn't sustain it over a full series the way CG has. My other faves among the series that launched this year would probably be Natsu no Arashi, Needless, and DtB II, based on a terrific start.
Cross Game is definitely the best.
Although I give Fullmetal Alchemist: Brootherhood an honorable second place.
I could understand some people rating Kimi ni Todoke pretty high. I like it, but too much estrogen for it be my favorite.
Of course the Winter season has yet to come out, but I haven't seen anything that looks to even have the potential of a runner up, let alone first place.
Hmm, lots of Cross Game fans here. That's nice. ^^
My pick for Anime of the Year 2009 as of this moment has to be Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger followed by the aforementioned Cross Game and Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou.
I'm still waiting on whether Aoi Bungaku and Darker than Black II can break the through, though.

For me:
1: Cross Game (for the 'feel good' factor)
2: Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (for its realism)
3: Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom (action)
4: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (nice mix of action and good storyline)
5: Darker than BLACK II: Ryuusei no Gemini (remains to be seen...)
Seriously, the animation for Cross Game is good, they should really do a remake of H2 (also by Mitsuru Adachi) coz the previous anime only had half the story, and almost no subbers...

Like Proto, I'd probably start with Kemono no Sou-ja Erin, a remarkably underappreciated story by the author of the Moribito novels. It has blemishes, like any series, but it's managed to sustain the story over nearly fifty episodes now and held my and my daughter's attention throughout.
Beyond that the pickings are slimmer. Aoi Bungaku could turn out to be a winner, but I've only seen three episodes so far, and Fevver's fears that it could be too heavy-handed are plausible. Shows in the Noitamina block, usually a good source of favorites for me, haven't seemed quite so compelling this year. Genji was beautiful but a bit of a yawner, Eden of the East was too self-consciously mannered, and Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 had the "shark-jumping" problem that Enzo mentioned. Despite my love for Bakeneko and Mononoke, I've had a hard time getting into Kuuchuu Buranko from the same talented group at Toei. I'm going back to it soon to give it another chance.
Bakemonogatari was visually compelling, but the story didn't hold my interest. Again I'm waiting to finish it, in this case for the joint gg+II subs with the extensive translations of the textual material. I gave up on Cross Game after the first episode or two; I'll probably give it another try seeing how much praise it's received here and in other threads. Looking back over the shows this year, I remember hearing a lot of enthusiasm for Ride Back when it aired, but it hasn't appeared on anyone's lists so far.
Surprisingly one of my favorite shows this year is Higepiyo with its mix of comedy and insight into Japanese society and culture. It's probably too light-weight to be a "best of" winner, but it's definitely worth watching. My other "find" wasn't actually released in 2009; that's 2001's Hidamari no Ki about two young men, a Western-oriented doctor and a samurai, in the period just before the Meiji Restoration. Only three episodes have yet been subbed; I look forward to seeing more from our friends at Aoi.
If I can add a couple of shows to the other end of the spectrum, I'd say my biggest disappointment was Guin Saga. It just lost momentum after the first half-dozen episodes or so, and when Guin wasn't around there wasn't enough "there" there. Kuuchuu Buranko could end up in this category as well since it was my most-anticipated show this year.

The following are in no particular order....
Dragon Ball Kai. It's everything I ever loved about DBZ, but this time, WITHOUT THE FILLER. Oh my God I think my brain just exploded from the awesomeness.
Kimi ni Todoke. First off, I'm a sucker for melodrama of any kind, and this anime is just so sweet and earnest (just like its protagonist) that I just can't help but love it to death.
Needless. Between the hilarious comedy and off-the-wall action, this anime is probably the ultimate shounen-genre show of this season, and almost a parody of the genre itself.
Tears to Tiara. Simply, I loved it. Great fantasy/medieval anime that had just about everything right about it. A fairly deep storyline, a plot that had twists but made sense, drama, action, villians that were ACTUALLY EVIL, an assorted cast and convincing protagonists... this anime's multitude of elements brought something classic, yet new to the genre.
Valkyria Chronicles. A fictional wartime anime that was somewhat of a parallel to 1930-1940's Europe, with a fairly large cast of characters. Though early on it suffers from too much character shield, it picks up midway through and doesn't let up. Largely a war anime, it also has a romantic element to it that keeps you interested in it beyond just the action.
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Though a bit fast-paced, the remake is a lot like the first version of FMA. Only this time, it follows the proper manga storyline. Need I say more?
Top 5 for me:
1. Cross Game
2. Clannad After Story (if it counts)
3. Eden of the East
4. Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
5. K-On

Sora no manimani
Clannad

Thanks for mentioning Higepiyo, SS. A great little hors d'ouevre that deserves a lot more attention.
And thanks to this topic for reminding me that Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou did premiere in January - for some reason I had it in my head that it was fall '08. I would definitely add it to my list as a solid 2nd place, almost a co #1.

First mention for me would be Bakemonogatari. I actually appreciated the fanservice in there (which I usually hate). The unorthodox presentation as well as Hitagi's excellent voice acting just drew me in and I wanted it even more. It pulls out the otaku fetishes in a blatent, yet subtle way unlike Lucky Star which was anything but subtle!
Notable mention is Minami-Ke Okaeri which was executed excellently and was unbelievably consistent. Touma-heavy but still funny - makes up for the lack of the Minami brothers in season 2. Okaeri took a drop in ep11 but the rest was just spot on. Maybe this is because all the episodes were taken directly from the manga. The art will never match season 1 but was passable. I definately waited in apprehension every week and the release of the excellent OVA Betsubara just made me realise how much I loved and missed this series.

the flaw of cross game is its animation, i mean it's not attractive if compare to others. but even the animation is poor, i extremely enjoy it the most among 2009 anime. the very strong points of it are characters and story which left me hungry for next episode, so best of 2009 anime of mine is cross game.
In a very weak year Bakemonogatari is easily is the years best. Familiar yet fresh characters that are actually interesting, snappy and witty dialogue, "monsters of the arc" that serve the story instead of dominating it and amazingly there is actual romantic progression between the two leads that doesn't take forever and ever to happen.
Cross Game is an easy #2, I just wished the anime wasn't so "dumbed" down compared to the manga (obvious stuff in the manga is... REALLY OBVIOUS!! in the anime) but seeing the segments before the actual episode I guess it's taking into account a certain audience range. Anyway I loved the manga which I read 110 chapters of after seeing the first episode of the anime, this is one of the better adaptions I've seen even with it being slightly dumbed down and with some filler. It still captures the essence of the manga and is probably my #2 sports anime of all time, only behind the amazing Ippo.
HM to Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari which is a really fun OVA series so far, has potential to one of the years best if the last half is done well. I mentioned Ippo earlier on and Ippo: New Challenger was pretty damn good as well, the last arc/fight (TAKUMURA!!!!) was the best in the entire franchise but overall as a series not as good as the first one or better than the above mentioned series. Can't wait for more of it though...
I haven't checked out DTB 2 yet but I don't think I've missed anything else that might be a contender, well maybe Natsume Yuujin-chou 2 but like DTB 2 I haven't seen the first in full series yet... for some disappointments... Rideback (the ending sequence of episode 1 is just magical) and Eden started off really good but couldn't maintain the quality. Spice and Wolf 2 I've enjoyed a lot and I need to finish but I don't think it's going to be "that" good. Umineko's first half was really average and FMA Brotherhood just isn't doing it for me.
I hope 2010 is much better than 2009, last few years have been rather average compared to the great years we had in 06 and 07.

If you've enjoyed that particular series, more power to you but I've seen animes just like that come and go. It's just not my taste, even so I would hardly call it anime of the year material.

hoi besides look reasons why i watch qb series was different than other anime fans besides why i was watching it because i see it as anime that got "harsh blam" but unless those i give it a CHANCE it prove to be something.
really it was something that qb series from a list of who's who female seiyu, dramatic scene, etc really something besides it worth that watch than some other 09 anime (no offense).
The OP song for Queen's Blade: Gyokuza O Tsugu Mono is spectacular I think (If not the best OP song for me this year). And, yeah. I believe Queen's Blade is a popular series, plus a favourite of mine this year.
I've thought a little bit, coming up with something a Shounen fan should've mentioned: Sengoku Basara. The action sequences're like "Wow" for me. That's all I shall say for that.
(The rest I liked are listed below)
Hyakko, Akaneiro ni Somaru Saka, Asu no Yoichi, Casshern Sins, K-ON!, Kannagi, Maria-sama ga Miteru (4th Season), Shikabane Hime, Skip Beat, Tayutama -Kiss on my Deity-, Valkyria Chronicles, Vampire Knight Guilty and Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.
I can't believe I forgot Shin Mazinger Z in my earlier post, pencil that in as my #3 title of the year. Brilliant at times directing combined with some truly awesome moments and one of the best antagonists of the year in Baron Ashura.
2009 has not ended yet but my list should be like this (my favourites not mean best):
1) Phantom << my best in 2009
2) Canaan
3) FMA 2009
4) Darker Than Black S2
5) Eden of the East
6) K-ON!
7) Tokyo Magnitude 8
8) Bakemonogatari
9) Shangri-La
10) Saki
i am starting to like Umineko too

In no particular order, my favourites so far are:
Spice & Wolf II
Umineko No Naku Koro Ni
Bakemonogatari
Eve No Jikan
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
Aoi Bungaku
The Tower of Druaga: The Sword of Uruk
Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom
Hmmm nice... lets see my fav:-
1)Saki
I never seen an anime that enjoy me very much. After i watching Saki, i learn mahjong and join several tournament. Yeah because Saki i learn mahjong and that show how much i like it.
2)Needless
First Needless remind me TTGL but it very different. I like how they combine GAR and MOE in one series and made this series freakin good awesome.
3)Asura Cryin 2
This season is super good and super enjoying. I love everything in Asura Cryin 2 sooo far. S1 not very good and just average but season 2 is super great and i really enjoy it sooo much.
4)Taishou Yakyuu Musume
Okay personally i didnt like any baseball anime but this anime change it. Spice of Life in this series make this series good and enjoyable. Yeah it super entertaining.
5)Kemono no Souja Erin
This is epic. If you like slow stories that develop from main character child until her adulthood, this is good anime to watch.
Okay that top 5 for me this year lol...

The top ones for me are probably Bakemonogatari, FMA:B, DtB2, Kimi ni Todoke, with an honorable mention to Saki for being the guilty pleasure of the year. I will probably need to catch up with East of Eden, TM8, and Cross Game soon.

Bakemonogatari wins it in a relatively weak year.
Cross Game is good, but I enjoy the manga so much more that it can't be my favorite. I guess I am not the target audience of the anime, because it misses a lot of what makes the manga incredible to me. Despite that, it is still very good though.

If I can add a couple of shows to the other end of the spectrum, I'd say my biggest disappointment was Guin Saga. It just lost momentum after the first half-dozen episodes or so, and when Guin wasn't around there wasn't enough "there" there..
I absolutely agree with this...I had the exact same feeling right before I dropped it...I think the biggest mistake was how the atmosphere of the show totally shifted from Guin and the kids being the hunted to Guin just beating the jungle-$hit out of everything...
As for my top show of 2009, I gotta roll with Mitchiko E Hatchin...2 strong female lead characters with great interaction between one another...A show that can be action-packed and stylistically cool, but soft and heartfelt, or just loud and obnoxious, and even dark and comedic...I've watched alot of shows that try to pretend to be something on the same level of a Cowboy Bebop *cough Black Lagoon - Darker than black cough*, but since 2001 I can think of one show besides Watanabe's follow up Samurai Champloo that gave me that same feeling...That feeling where the journey means more than anything else, where certain concepts in the show are greater than the show itself...This show did that for me...It's so hardcore til it's gooey in the middle and it's hard to pull that off, but Hatchin does it perfectly for my money...
well overall 09 new anime were ok give fact we had let see
1.fma remake
2.final inuyasha (oh please let it be FINAL)
3.queen's blade ya know this is stealing the 09 anime of the year
4.sora kake yea leopard-lelouch
5.sora no otoshimono flyin undies & soch "kira yamato" hoshi what just happen?!
of course i'v mention the 09 english dub well there some but if i've to say one anime for english dub of 2009 would be romeo x juliet really no question ask really best dub of 09 (hey i've watch like 6 or 7 times already this year on the dub)

I'd have to stick with Bakemonogatari. The dialogue and character interaction is pretty ingenious in an age full of moe-blob and harem anime (I'm just not a fan of that stuff xD).

Bakemonogatari, Natsume is a close second though. Cross Game is good but I read the manga so I can't rank it very high. Also it does not break my top 3 favorite Adachi works. Otherwise it would probably be after Natsume.

Based on what I've finished I'd have to say it's a toss up between Eden of The East, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 and Shin Mazinger. If I toss in late 2008 series like other people that carried over than obviously I'm going to add Gundam 00 Second Season, MS Igloo 2 and Casshern Sins.
Pffft....hahahaha Clannad After Story extremely underated? That made my day sorry. :heh::heh::heh: *tears*
Edit: Oh man I read that wrong, you were referring to Cross Game weren't you cause I was going to say WOW! Anyway my bad, but since After Story is technically 2008 anyway I think you are set for Cross Game. ;)
I'm the only one seeing the irony here?
Anyway, if it continuous being so amazing, my vote goes to Aoi Bungaku.
Nisio makes fun of tropes.

In my opinion I think the best anime of 2009 is definetly Cross Game. Following it by Hayate No Gotoku!! , Asura Cryin' 2 and then Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei. :)

Bakemonogatari best of year to me without a doubt, too much about it that I really liked.
Others No particular order I've really enjoyed:
Needless, K-ON, Canaan, Hatsukoi Limited, Nyan Koi, and Toradora[if it counts don't think it does ] but few shows of this year I've wanted to watch, and just haven't gotten around to, or haven't finished and I am waiting on that.
1 - Bakemonogatari of course .
2 - Darker Than Black 2
3 - Inuyasha Final Act
4 - White Album

I'm going to go with Bakemonogatari, although Spice and Wolf II also made a strong case for itself.
Actually, I'm surprised S&WII wasn't on that 2chan list. Nice to see that Taisho Yakyuu Musume's "historical moe" approach was well received even if it didn't get as much attention as K-On and Saki.
I'd have to stick with Bakemonogatari. The dialogue and character interaction is pretty ingenious in an age full of moe-blob and harem anime (I'm just not a fan of that stuff xD).
I'm the only one seeing the irony here?
Nope. I consider Bakemonogatari to have great dialogue, but it doesn't change the fact it has one of the greatest "harems" ever assembled in an anime Which of course means it's one of the greatest harem shows ever.

Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou
----
Cross Game
Basquash!

1.Saki
2.K-on
3.Minami-ke Okaeri
4.Aoi-hana
5.Sasameki Koto
6.Kanamemo
7.Shin Koihime Musou
8.Queen's Blade(enjoyed it as a guilty pleasure)
special mention go's to Spice and Wolf S2(not as good as the first season), Taishou Yakyuu Musume(bland romantic subplots ruined it for me, other then that it was an enjoyable series), and Canaan.

Gotta go with Cross Game and Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou.
I hate to list animes that haven't even finished their run, but the two strongest contenders for my favorite of year are Bakemonogatari and Aoi Bungaku.
K-On, Eden of the East, Saki and Umi Monogatari were also plain amazing.
Aimingan12
2009-12-13, 18:48
Also Morbito: Guardian of Spirits
I'll plug in CROSS GAME too:
I came in thinking "great,i love baseball, this should be fun" now I think "wow, great romance, drama and comedy! The baseball action is just the icing on the cake"
No it doesn't have the greatest animation ever but it doesn't need it.It has however,an amazing OST that never seems to ge old.
How do I know for sure that this is my favorite show?Well it's the only show this year that had me going "what? It's over already??" at the end of almost every episode
other notables:
-Aoi Bungaku
-Phantom
-Darker than black S2
-Sora no Otoshimono (I at first wanted to call it a guilty pleasure, but in fact,I don't feel guilty at all)

My usual rule of thumb is not to give my choice for "Anime of the Year" to ongoing series, but that's going to be pretty tough this year, because a lot of my favourites are ongoing. I'll be thinking long and hard about:
Bakemonogatari
Cross Game
Kemono no Souja Erin
Eden of the East
Kara no Kyoukai
My pick is probably going to come out of one of these, but to be totally honest, I can't make up my mind at this point.
Clannad ~After Story~ of course, meh. 2nd place goes to Kimi ni Todoke and the 3d to Bakemonogatari

I remember that Clannad AS wasn't nominated to Animesuki awards 08', so must count as 2009 anime...
Quite hard to decide, but I'll stick to Letter bee and CANAAN not sure if I really believe that they are best, but they made a good impression on me.

1. Darker than Black
2. Eden of the East
3. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
4. Cross Game
5. Spice and Wolf II
6. Bakamonogatari
These are the best of 2009 by far, with Darker than Black surely in the forefront.
If it counts, Clannad After Story is my top choice.
Second would be Bakemonogatari, closely followed by Darker than Black, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and Kimi ni Todoke.
There are so many Cross Game nominations here that I really feel like watching it now. Though the amount of it currently mind boggling..

same thing here, for last few years one anime has stood on top and I don't see that changing till it's done:p
and since its been on going for good many a years now, won't point towards it for a 2009 anime.
so I'd have to go with
Darker than Black
Bakemonogatari
Taisho Yakyuu Musume
Needless
Couldn't say which was a real fav this year, maybe Needless might just edge ahead but I enjoyed them so much pretty hard to pick.
while there are a great many anime this year, these are the ones that personally stand out more.

5. Shikabane Hime: Kuro - very good story

DtB S2, even though it's still on-going claims the top spot in weekly series. Canaan is not far after. So is S&WII.
Although I haven't seen KnK7 yet, I think I can safely say it will grab the top spot as far as not-weekly shows are concerned. Hellsing Ultimate comes beneath, just knowing the manga and how every ep of it has been more epic than the previous.

In what has been a down right awful year:
1) Time of Eve -- the only real gem of the year
2) Eden of the East

Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou and Spice and Wolf II were good, but they don't count in my book do to being sequels.

well those are the only ones i can think of right now =S
Btw anyone know where i can download Kara No Kyoukai 5 ? can't find it anywhere but in batches
Umineko and Spice and Wolf II. The only animes in 2009 that has consistently kept me entertained from episode to episode.
Ranking is such a pain, so in no particular order:
Chrome Shelled Regios - love the sci-fi, apocalyptic setting. Nice mix of action/drama/fantasy. Ending is disappointing, but novels prove otherwise, hinting at a promising second season.
Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou - I wish it's longer.... explores the themes of human contact in a very peaceful and relaxed manner that doesn't make you fall asleep. Love the issues explored in the anime.
Tokyo Magnitude - I learn that there is such thing as portable toilet from this anime... well, emotional moments and really teaches you something. Very worth watching.
Basquash - kind of lost the vibe in the end, but the first half is quite brilliant - animation, style, music, plot, characters. I like how it's different from the norm.

Best show that started in 2009 for me is Cross Game. Then again, I'm an Adachi fanatic, so a wee bit of bias there lol.
Best show that ended in 2009 for me is Higashi no Eden, with Kara no Kyoukai as honorable mention. I feel Eden gets the nod here over KnK (they're quite close in my standards), due to it being entirely original and it being aired rather than released as 'movies' over the span of several years. As such, Eden really had more hurdles to jump and I feel deserves it more.

What was wrong with the first one? :twitch: I believe some people felt it was too dark and wasn't a great adaptation. For me the first one really should have done better to capture the lightness and the humor of the manga, which was one of the best thing about the show.
For me:
TORA DORA
The best romance-comedy anime this year, have a lot of character development and many emotional moment such as Taiga fighting Class-Rep and near the end of the series, it just keep dramatic! Not to forget that it have a great ending too.
NYAN KOI
The best comedy anime this year, definitely an enjoybale each episode, and have a really nice art too. Kanako is just too cute for me...

I'm torn between Chrom Shelled Regios and Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~.
Both were epic, with great storylines. I think Phantom might just win it.

To me, this has been an excellent year for anime. I'm not saying these are the "best" shows of the year (whatever that may mean), just very good shows that are my favorites:
Bakemonogatari -- Senjougahara fascination. Saitou Chiwa is outstanding.
Darker than Black 2 -- DtB with more emotional depth. Hanazawa Kana enters the big time.
Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ -- sharp and moving
Seitokai no Ichizon -- one of my two favorite comedy animes of all time, along with Ichigo Mashimaro (which is by the same director)
Aoi Hana -- delicate emotional portraits
There are a number of shows that I've enjoyed only slightly less than the first group:
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
Pandora Hearts (it just worked for me, from beginning to end)
White Album (unique storytelling)
Denpateki na Kanojo (a bright flower of malice)
Eden of the East
Marimite 4 (best Marimite since season two)
Genji Sennenki
Hanasakeru Seishonen (more than a reverse harem)
Yurumates (deftly hilarious but neglected OVA)
Suzumiya Haruhi 2 (a few excellent new eps, including the first couple of the endless eight, which just went on too long)
Aoi Bungaku is good literature, but I'm not sure it's good anime. Or maybe it's just too dark for me. Kanamemo was fun, but doesn't quite make my list. Toradora and Eve no Jikan were on last year's list. And I haven't watched much of Kemono no Souja Erin yet, but I'm saving up episodes.
I know some people will find it a "travesty" that Cross Game isn't in this list, but I just don't enjoy those characters and their development as much as other people seem to. There are some nice moments, but the show seems very, very slow to me at every level. And I don't find the humor funny. But I have watched 26 episodes, anyway, lol. In any case, I just want to say that tastes can honorably differ.

My original choice of favorites didn't change in 2009. But my choice of ranking changed as of this point.
Railgun: from 2 to 1 (Action with comedy, right on the money)
Seitokai no Ichizon: from 3 to 2 (Moe comdey, right amount of fanservice without going overboard)
Saki: from 1 to 3 (Comedy fanservice)
K-on: stays at 4
Well I'm torn between Bakemonogatari and Clannad After Story. Both were excellent anime and I liked them both but if Bakemonogatari gets points for originality Clannad AS gets points for it's almost flawless execution.
They both have pros and cons and I can't decide so there you go, It's a tie in my book. :)

Bakemonogatari gets points for being original, awesome and having ridiculously catchy opening themes. But mostly it wins because it had one of the least frustrating romantic resolutions I have ever seen in Japanese media EVER.
The rest of you 2D folks need to follow the example set by Senjougahara and Araragi. :D

Though I'm probably going to look stupid for this my favourite show of 2009 would most probably be Miracle Train. The show was consistently funny, touching in parts and had a nice ending that wrapped things up nicely.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni <3
K-ON! <3
Umineko disappointed me at first, but I really started to love it after a while (I stuck with it because of my love for Higurashi as well).
... and K-ON!... was just win. xD
Umineko totally forgot about this . Convoluted and at times confusing plot aside this anime is awesome Beato <3
I saw a decent amount of anime in 2009. Some good, some bad and some that didn't live up to their hype.
What were your favorite titles that aired in 2009?
BTW this thread (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=89832) lists all titles that aired.
I continued to watch Bleach, Naruto and One Piece. All three shows have ranged from barely decent to really good over the year. IMO One Piece has remained the most consistent. I'm sick of Ichigo and Naruto and wish that the supporting cast get more air time. Sasuke vs Itachi was great.
Bakemonogatari
I knew nothing about the show. The only reason I started watching it was because I saw it listed in the current series sub-forum guessing that it to be good if it was listed there. I was pleasantly surprised
Darker than Black: Ryuusei no Gemini
One of my favorite shows this fall. Though not as good as the first season, I do wish it had been longer.
Dragon Ball Kai
Eh why not? I've never seen Dragon Ball in Japanese. I appreciate them cutting out fillers.
Fairy Tail
Very generic shonen. Though still amusing
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Very good. Any shonen fan should be watching it.
Kampfer
Main reason to watch it was fanservice. Also the whole boy turning into a girl thing was interesting. Plot started to actually get decent then the last episode was like an acid trip. Show could have been better. Censoring was stupid.
Koukaku no Regios
Best use of Engrish I've ever seen :p I enjoyed this humans vs. monsters show. Kind of fell apart at the very end but overall I enjoyed it.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 2nd Season
I'm a mecha nut. This season of Gundam did not disappoint. Final battle was epic.
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (2009)
F-you endless eight! :frustrated:
Besides that I enjoyed it. Wish there was more.
I also watched several other shows that didn't really do anything for me though they each had their moments. 07-Ghost, Druaga no Tou: the Sword of Uruk, Ride Back, Seiken no Blacksmith.
Hm, I only watched three series this year, I think.
1. Umineko - Beato was so awesome in the anime, and I was glad to see everything animated.
2. K-On! - It was cute and funny.
3. Higurashi Rei - I really loved Higurashi but know that the truth has been exposed I can't enjoy it anymore, really.
I really liked Higashi no Eden, I if it would fit properly. Btw, I liked Umineko as well, any of theses two would be good.

My top 3:
3. Koihime Musou's second season defined the definition for "we're back with the second season" kind of saying. There was pretty much nothing bad for this season, with the slight exemption of some small fillers and the already huge cast getting bigger only being a minor annoyance (as well as the humor being more hit or miss), it was mostly enjoyable. Soemthing tells me season 3 may not focus on more new characters as much. As you can also tell from my avatar, Shuri got a real impression on me.
2. K-On, of course. I would be surprised if no one else here ever saw it (unless they hate it just from watching the moe designs) the music from the band is awesome (4 songs from them are in my iPod), and I enjoyed the characters as well, although it isn't prefect, mostly because ever since Sawako decided to become more of a manager status for the girls, she basically character derailed Mio into being a bit of a wimp (come on, Mio, if you punch at Ritsu a lot, why not do that with Sawako), anyways, it was bery enjoyable and just plain cool.
1. Kanamemo was the comedy (or dramedy) anime. Sadly, this show is being overlooked so much just because of it's, again. desgins. It has the best script (mostly bised from fansubs) in a comedy ever. Every humor moment is actually hilarious and laugh out loud as well as lovable characters (even Haruka) and Rie Kugimiya actually having a tolerable tsundere role for me (I never liked her other tsundere roles). The only problem? Some episodes have some mood changes, and that mostly happens in the second half of the series. This is also one of the best anime of the DECADE, even. I seriously hope a second season comes, but it's too awesome to get another one, I guess. Again, over looked and underrated, but this anime is awesome.

uh neither of those series aired in 2009, they were 07/08 series :uhoh:
Oh, I'm sorry you mean 2009? Oppss. OK,
Gundam 00 S2
Kurokami The Animation
Hayate No Gotoku 2nd
Sora Wo kakeru shoujo
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
That's all I have to say it.
Now that it's finished its airing, I'll wave the Aoi Bungaku flag here for a bit.
This series had tremendous storytelling, an amazing narrative and jaw-dropping art and animation. Every episode is full of meaning and substance; a true gem.
For me, it's gotta be Bakemonogatari.
The other anime released 2009 don't even come close. Distant second comes Spice and Wolf II, then Darker than Black: Ryuusei no Gemini, both of which were overshadowed by their first seasons.
If Toradora was included as a 2009 anime, Bakemonogatari might have had some stiff competition. But it isn't, so...

Would have to be Bakemonogatari. Quite easily my favorite anime of 2009. Senjougahara fascination is still alive and well.

suzumiya haruhi season 2
(it's not even that good with the endless eight and even the stuff that's not endless)
lol. It's so sad there was like nothing to watch. higashi no eden was terrible (i should've dropped it sonner) and so so boring. clannad s2 or whatever... i won't even bother trying to watch. kimi ni todoke... boring and terrible.
Actually I didn't finish watching bakemonogatari (stuck on ep 3?) but like the perviness annoys me. i'll see later......... how any more eps to watch before gibu appu
It's so sad what anime has succumbed to. i wondre if they'll make an anime that's as good as welcome to nhk or nana, etc ever again? lol anime is so terrible now-a-days.
