I have not read recent 100 chapters of HnG, so I would appreciate you pointing out various places where I got it wrong. Characters like Shana and Hina have interested people in different ways, thus it is likely that certain aspect of Hina or Shana has blinded me to other aspects.

You might want to read up at least till the end of the Greece arc, which certainly was the best part of Hayate so far. It will give you some new insights, also on who Game8910's avatar is, and why he won't find it hard to discard Hina - this heretic!! :P

If I were to write up a match, it would only consist of anime material. Anything else would be considered spoiler and not be accepted.

Read Wontaek's post (which isn't a wall of text now! :p) and it's a nice backdrop to today's match. I don't particularly care for analysing characters and placing them into subgroups or whatnot, but so long as I like a series and like the characters (aren't too stereotypical), then I'm happy to vote. I was never bothered by Moe tournaments to begin with, only started this year because ISML is just so simple to vote in.

My biggest issue with Hinagiku is that she comes from a series I don't really like. I watched enough of Hayate to know who she is, but I've never really been able to tell if her lack of appeal to me is because I missed a lot of later development of her character or just because I didn't care for her character in general.



While I find Hayate a superb series, I'm glad to see someone else around here who has a hard time with character and story segregation. A series has to provide the right backdrop for its characters to flourish otherwise I will not be able to appreciate any of them.

The anime series really butchered the timeline of the show. If you only ever watched the anime (like I did until season 2 ended), you'd feel really disjointed, especially during season 1. Which is why it's hard to recommend Hayate the anime. First off a 50+ first season is gonna be daunting, add in then that the plot and timeline go all haywire, it's not gonna capture peoples attention easily.

Season 2 tries to remedy this, but it's still not perfect. Reading the manga almost felt like reading a whole new show.

I loved the Hayate anime first season because of how much the director tried to style on it. I loved the second season because I was able to appreciate the actual content better. So either way it's a 9/10 show for me. I tried the manga back after season 1 and I didn't find it nearly as enjoyable at the time.

I personally prefer the Hayate manga over the adaptation; I'm not entirely sure presently, but I feel that the manga possess an appeal that the anime doesn't: I just don't know how to explain that phenomenon. The manga feels a lot more consistent than the anime, what with everything occuring in a comprehensible order as opposed to a random sequence of events.

Also, concerning Hinagiku's character, I admit that beyond a certain point which was Hinagiku's epiphany atop the clock tower with Hayate, she didn't really develop much (keep in mind, I'm arguably not as far as everyone else is), but the same argument could be applied to Shana (at least, in the anime adaptations): after she becomes much more of a social character and accepting of others, she still hasn't come (completely) to terms with dealing with her feelings towards Yuji (read: she still acts like a textbook modern tsundere). Granted, she doesn't completely screw everything up like she did in the first season, but she's nowhere close to expressing a resolute answer for her feelings towards Yuji (or even Wilhelmina for that matter).

tl;dr: Both characters are developing gradually at an inconsistent pace, but I personally don't think neither character is necessarily ahead of the other, particularly when it concerns love.

It took EotW and then about 4-5 chapters into the greece arc to finally succumb...either way Hina is still awesome...but against Shana, well...people already know what I would pick

Damn, my favourite didn't even make the top 16. Nice to see that Misaka can finish no worse than 4th, though.

Shana looks pretty good for once. I was pretty sure Hinagiku was going to win but Shana shows everyone that she isn't finished just yet. While Hinagiku didn't seem to be in her usual form, Sanzin'in Nagi looked good in her match with Tomoyo. I expected the two to be pretty much equal but Nagi manged to put a little bit of distance between them. Azusa and Yui pretty much did as expected in their matches. It doesn't seem like K-On is going to be getting any significant boost from the finale. I've been hyping up Azusa for a while now but now she's finally going to have to show some results. She outdid Shana's percentage on Hinagiku and beat Taiga by more than Misaka did. but now she's got the challenge of taking out the 1 seed. Eliminating Shana, especially if it's the Shana that just beat Hinagiku, is not going to be an easy task but I hope that Azusa will prove that she's up to the challenge.

That was a lot less closer than expected. Sad to see Hinagiku go, but hopefully Shana rides her present seed ranking and completely obliterates everyone she faces from this point on.

...which will be a HUGE challenge, which I think will be the most difficult bracket to go through: Shana will have to defeat both premier K-ON! members along the way AND the very same character that was the reason she was in the Losers' Bracket to begin with.

Nonetheless, I'm rooting for her AND Mikoto to duke it out in the finals. I don't want to see Azusa or Mio in the Championship Match.

I think that maid outfits are actually a fetish in other countries too, but of course otaku always take fetishes to a whole new level.

The maid outfits in that picture are pretty nice looking but I generally consider myself a miko man.

The beginning

Who are these girls? If your parents are living in China, Korea, or Japan( and perhaps many many other countries), then these are anime characters your parents watched when they were young. Ribbon no Kishi dates from 1953 while Sally the Witch dates from 1966, but both of them has a remake film in 1990s. If you consider that your parents age groups are the ones who are the bosses in the companies, then I think you can understand why these characters are relevant. Their importance goes beyond merely being old. Princess Sapphire challenged gender status quo in the 1950s. The Wikipedia says 'It also had a profound influence on the women who would eventually come to revolutionize the genre of shōjo manga.' Without this character, the idea of female character being the active mover of plots, in contrast to women who just deals with the hardship fate had thrown at her, would not have become as prevalent as now, and characters like Shana, Saber, Sakagami Tomoyo, and Katsura Hinagiku might not have came into existence. Sally the Witch is of no less importance. Quoting Wikipedia 'Sally the Witch (魔法使いサリー, Mahōtsukai Sarī?), is the first magical girl manga and anime in Japan (it is not the kind about a transforming one, e.g. Sailor Moon), and was of the first such anime series produced.' Not only did this series influenced the magical girl series, this series's format is copied by many series that has anything to do with magic users. Furthermore the international success of this series made Japanese anime company much more aware of foreign market and tastes. Elements found in Yumeno Sally can be found in diverse characters as Shana, Tohsaka Rin, Fate Testarossa, and many many others. In fact, due to age and fame of both of the characters, you can find elements from both characters in many of the ISML contestants. So how are they different? Princess Sapphire is very adventurous, takes much risk, and has conflicting wishes of physically beating up her adversaries and acting meek and tame like a proper lady. Yumeno Sally is very proper, thoughtful, playful in her own way, and tries to act responsibly. If Sapphire acts like a rebellious girl struggling for her freedom, Sally acts like someone destined to rule both men and women, which she is. Please consider finding out more about these two worthy characters who are the foundations upon which most of our heroines are built upon.

여러분들뿐 아니라 여러분의 부모님들 마저 사파이어 왕자(공주)와 요술공주 세리를 알 것 입니다. 여러분의 부모님 세대가 지금 사회의 정치와 경제의 핵심이라는 것을 생각하면 이들이 지금 애니에 많은 영향을 주었다는 것은 당연하게 느껴질 수 있을 것 입니다. 사파이어 왕자는 1953년에 처음 만화에 나와서 그당시 여성의 권리에 대한 논쟁에 부채질을 한 애니라 할 수 있습니다. 사파이어 공주는 고전처럼 운명이 던져준 고난을 극복하는 해결사적인 여주인공이 아닌, 본인이 직접 사건을 만들고 그 사건을 이용하여 자신이 생각하는 정의를 실천하는 여자 주인공 이었습니다. 이런 능동적인 여성의 모습은 동양 사회에서 받아들이기 힘든 모습이었다는 것을 생각하면 이 만화가 얼마나 위험을 무릅쓰고 그려진 만화인지 생각할 수 있습니다. 사파이어 공주가 없었으면 샤나, 세이버, 사카가미 토모요, 카츠라 히나기쿠 같은 능동적인 여주인공들이 지금처럼 많이 있을 수 없다고 생각합니다. 세리공주는 사파이어 왕자와 달리 처음부터 마법의 나라의 최고 권력자가 될 사람인 것을 알고 이에 맞게 행동하는 인물입니다. 그렇지만 나름 정상적인 어린시절을 보내기 위해서 자신의 정체를 감추고 지구에 온 여주인공이지요. 요술공주 세리는 마법소녀물의 첫 작품으로써 이후 모든 마법소녀물에 영향을 주었을 뿐 아니라, 극중 여러 요소는 일본 애니에서 마법사가 등장하는 거의 모든 작품에서 찾을 수 있을정도로 광범위하게 영향을 주었다고 할 수 있습니다. 그리고 일본 애니 초기 국제적 성공 사례가 되어서 일본 애니계가 국제 시장과 취향을 의식하게 만든 작품이라고도 할 수 있습니다. 마지막으로 이 두 신화적 인물들의 차이를 살펴 봅시다. 사파이어 왕자는 두려움 없이 위험한 상황에 뛰어드는 인물이며, 상황 해결을 위해서 상당히 어려운 일도 마다하지 않지만 적을 직접 상대하여 싸우고 싶어하면서도 공주처럼 연약하고 순종적으로 살고 싶어하기도 하는 모순된 소원을 가진 인물입니다. 세리는 예의 바르고 정중하며 사례가 깊고 책임감이 많은 모범생이라 할 수 있습니다. 사파이어 왕자가 자유를 얻기위해서 저항하고 있는 반항심 많은 소녀라면, 세리는 한 나라의 모든 남자와 여자위에 군림하게 될 운명을 가진 사람처럼 행동한다고 할 수 있습니다. 요즘 애니의 거의 모든 여주인공들의 기초라고 불릴 수 있는 이 두 인물들에 대하여 여러분들 나름대로 조사하여 보시면 흥미로운 사실들을 발견 할 수 있을 것입니다.

That's only true if people don't know both exhibition contestants. If they know one or both they will still choose their favourite without being influenced that much by the avatar. Exceptions might happen when both of them are close to each other. For example the Mikoto vs Mio match-up, I chose Mio because her avatar is cuter but it's not like I'd dislike Mikoto.

Gentle Saviors

Since the ancient days, gentle motherly figure in literature and religion has always been prevalent, culminating with Holy Mary of Christianity. It is unavoidable that such a figure be found in anime, and many famous heroines exhibit some of the traits of merciful and feminine character who relieves others' pain. Yet, none has quite made it the central characteristic of the heroine until Belldandy grew into that role with her angelic mercy and charm. Still, Belldandy had other characteristics as well, and may justifiably viewed as a mere multi-role fantasy fulfilling heroine for male manga/anime viewers, thus the first widely viewed character who truly is created to be a gentle savior first and foremost may be Honda Tōru. While the two characters share many characteristics due to their main role in the plot, the way they bring about the salvation is very different. Belldandy is a powerful angel, capable of numerous feats, many beyond human ability, while Tōru is an average girl, struggling with basic things that can arise for anyone, thus someone who doesn't have confidence or knowledge of the needed solution to problems she encounter. Both can be naive at times, but while Belldandy always seems to find a way to rise above the darkness of human society, Tōru has to struggle through the full brunt of the evils within society, being spared the worst of it only due to powerful friends whose souls she saved in the past. Belldandy is by nature, an unearthly beauty, while Tōru is a plain girl whose outer beauty pales greatly compared to her inner beauty and warmth. Most striking contrast is, however, while Belldandy can bring about the solution via her abundant supernatural knowledge, wisdom, and abilities, Tohru, who practically has nothing, aid those who are suffering in hiding discover path of self-healing by truly listening to them, understand how they themselves view their wounds, embracing their pain and anguish, thus helping to fill the void within them. A good way to think about them perhaps is while Tōru is more like Mizunashi Akari in series ARIA, Belldandy is more like Alicia Florence, as one is a friend to whom people open their heart, while the other is the wise superior people admire. People have different ideals when it comes to feminine saviors. Perhaps the result of this match may show whether people are hoping for a comforter who is divine and radiant, or meek and humble.

Man I always try to not sound TOO biased towards Shana when I post here but with that Mio blowout...honestly, Shana looks like the only one who could match that strength but even then I wonder if it would be enough.
While I knew Mikoto was strong, and for a moment it made me believe that she could've won the whole thing, this match kinda was like a slap back to reality...I cant help but think that Mikoto really was just being used as a tool to eventually snipe Shana, hell maybe Mikoto's strength was being aided by the K-ON faction itself this whole time, seeing how she had the job of taking out Taiga and Shana, who were potentially the most dangerous threats to Mio. If this whole D.E really is going keikaku dori for K-ON, then Shana vs Azusa will be a true bloodshed, with Shana in favour of pulling in the more hate votes. Either way I dont see Mikoto being able to beat either Shana or Azusa next, if its Shana there there could be a small chance but i highly doubt with Mikoto u can suddenly close a gap of almost 700 votes, twice.
If Azusa beats Shana, then I congratulate Mio for winning the ISML 2010 Tiara in advance.

As for K-ON in moe contests next year...unless the manga gets a sequel I don't expect any of them back in Saimoe or Best Moe after 2011 (unless the "last" episode OVA disc is released after July 1, 2011 that is). For ISML though, I suspect them to hang of at least as well as Clannad or Lucky Star and then slowly fade like Kanon did and Lucky Star is doing. Mio, Yui, and Azusa may retain a major fanbase, but the rest won't get very far even if they make it next year.

Of course the Rozen Maidens still manage a major fanbase...when it is unleashed that is.

This was always Mio's game from the beginning. Things have unfolded as I thought they would. Regular season is just detail. DE is where it really matters.

Mio has one had on the tiara. But the question is - is there another character other factions will rally behind at the last moment?

But hey, Mio deserves to win a content. To say Mio isn't moe is contradictory. I'm not a massive fan of hers or the series, but it's futile to deny it's moe.

Guess I'd finally better bite the bullet and watch it if her or Azusa wins the tiara.

We had a massive increase in the number of voters. Despite that, Tomoyo vs Saber turned out almost exactly as predicted. That's about the only thing that went by the stats, though. I'm not sure if it's a delayed K-On boost or just a one time K-On rally or something else but Yui killed Nagi a fair bit worse than she beat Saber and Nagi beat Tomoyo who just beat Saber. I expected Nagi to be a bit weaker since she wasn't sharing a match day with Hinagiku and Shana like she did against Tomoyo. I thought Yui would be a bit stronger since she was sharing a big match day with Mio. However, I really didn't expect this large of a difference. Mio did an amazing job in taking out Misaka. I didn't think Mio could do it, let alone do it as easily as she did. 53.48% is a lot. In the round robin phase, a performance like that means you were a near lock to win. Variance is defintely higher in the Double Elimination phase but that's still a margin of victory that can't be turned around very easily. Mio is just one win away from the Tiara and Azusa is aiming to finish off Shana and Misaka to complete the K-On domination.

Heh... I came across that nurse scene in the manga, and I could only imagine that the anime portrayal would be less perverse than what the manga had contained. I haven't watched the anime version of this, but I'd probably dislike it, too. Yeah, her cosplay as a nurse =/= cute. Her clingness to Ritsu... Well, that just means that her character hasn't grown a bit at all, but that's for a different topic and forum.

But honestly, I actually never had a lot of confidence in Mio winning, especially from K-On fans (at least those in AnimeSuki, 'coz the love for Mio and Yui is more like 1:3, with lots of hate posts for Mio). Hell, more than half of the votes posted here are towards Mikoto. But damn, insurmountable odds indeed. You go, girl!

Basically it is their aborted recruitment video (a fairly short scene). The episode shows how much the girls have grown since then (two years basically).

I wonder how many participants actually ever watched "Suzuka" (anime ran over 6 years ago), in which a male lead was always pining for the prickly TSUNdere (type A+) and anime name-giver Suzuka, got abused, ridiculed and in the second manga-half which wasn't shown in the anime even deserted by this so-called "heroine", before this fated match eventually bore fruit. Which I wouldn't mind so much if a much more worthier girl - Honoka - who continuously helped the male lead to get on his feet again and who consistently managed to make his life better, hadn't gotten the shaft twice in a most unfair way. And the old standard comfort-thought "she deserved someone better than HIM anyway" doesn't suffice to calm my anger even after all these years ;)

But honestly, I actually never had a lot of confidence in Mio winning, especially from K-On fans (at least those in AnimeSuki, 'coz the love for Mio and Yui is more like 1:3, with lots of hate posts for Mio). Hell, more than half of the votes posted here are towards Mikoto. But damn, insurmountable odds indeed. You go, girl!

Fight, Azusa! Let the junior/senior match Round 2 be a reality!

I think that Mio's and Yui's popularities are about even here (heck, look at the favorite character poll; Mio's still winning!).

As for the results, I'm glad Yui won, but sad Misaka lost. Mio seems like she might win it all- and she deserves it-but I still wanted Misaka to win.

Iie, iie, those votes are mostly from last year, I think, when the first season was running (and S1 has more Mio screentime). That's why I'm surprised that Mio is still having such popularity after her lack of development in Season Two - but again, digressing here.

In regards to the results, looks like Mio's got the most support from South-East Asia (Singapore hidden amidst that area). Don't know whether to be happy about this, because most anime fans I know in SEA are kinda... weeaboos. *shrugs*

Can't deny that Mikoto lost ground as a result of a big loss to Mio, I still wouldn't put her behind a character who was eliminated 1 round earlier, even if that character is Hinagiku.



Subjectively speaking, I want Shana or even Mikoto to destroy the K-ON! crew and steal the tiara into their rightful hands.

Usually I just support my favorites and that's that. I still think Mio should be able to win the tiara , but I want it to be a competitive final match and not guaranteed. (Even if it means voting against a semi-favorite of mine). I think Mio is a worthy champion, the same goes for Mikoto, but there can only be one winner.

Wow, people overwelmingly prefer Poplar to Miharu. I felt they were pretty even. At least she got a win here, her upcoming J Saimoe match is just brutal with Azu-nyan and Stealth Momo. Great win also for Saeko. Kind of suprised at the lack of support for Skuld. The biggest match today besides Azu-nyan and Shana, is Kaoru vs Haruka (personally I prefer Sae to either of those, but that's just me):heh: Noe vs Hiromi is huge to. I suspect Hiromi will win, but Noe is Moe to me <3

I don't really mind what happens now. All the four remaining are characters that I like or am okay with. Rooting for Azusa though. I love Mio, but Azusa is more moe. I think it'll be interesting no matter what happens. Shana kinda deserves the tiara after two years of great regular season performances and then failing at DE. Mikoto already has much to be proud of, having a huge improvement from last year and it would be a monumental achievement for her to top it off by winning the tiara. It would also be big for Mio or Azusa, both competing in ISML for the first time, to win.

Yeah she has a chance (I'd say, 20%), but I'm not that optimistic about it since the tactical-votes seem to be stacking up against her. Without the advantage of Shana Anti-votes™, there are only really a select few who can keep pace with Shana, and I have my doubts that Azusa is one of them. :(

If the Misaka that blasted Nadeko and edged past Shana decides to show up to the match, Misaka has a chance at beating Azusa. If the Misaka that got creamed by Mio is the one up, she might as well give up. If Mio and Yui's sudden spike in strength is more than a one time deal and affects Azusa as well, Shana and Misaka are both pretty screwed unless they have a hidden rally trump card they haven't used.

In fact I quite like K-ON!, but moe contests (speaking of The Big Three in general here) are popularity contests and K-ON! is already starting to grate on me with its fans, though not necessarily on AnimeSuki. As I've said before, these people should try being in a mid-major faction. People who support characters like Hinagiku, Shana, and K-ON! faction should be thankful for the widespread love they have received. Championship titles do not mean everything; I prefer to place more value on consistent performance. None of my top characters will ever win ISML, and I am okay with that.

In the right tournament format, Mid-major can have chance to flourish. Now, if you are talking about minor series characters like Isara Gunther, Hibara Shizuru, and Alita Forland (アリタ‧フォーランド Arita Fōrando?) aka Milano (ミラノ Mirano?) , you can only cry in a dark corner, alone.

Perhaps until late 90s, the biggest seller genre in anime was mecha series, thus most recognized ladies in the anime often came from mecha genre. Even those not from the mecha genre often paid tributes by having occasional mecha scenes or mimicking one of the famous females from mecha series. The well known names in mecha series ladies include Lynn Minmay, EVE, Asagiri Priss, and the 2 ladies for this match, Sayla Mass and Ginrei. Part of Sayla's importance comes from her being the female character with most dialog lines in perhaps the most influential anime series ever, the first Gundam series. Although much of her signature meme of being sister of the archenemy, medium blond hair, and being of multi-support role did not originated with her, she is the one who made it famous. Unlike the submissive girls of classical mecha series before her, she is actively involved as multi-talented active person, who contributes to the plot as an intellegent person and an active combatant. Although her being relative of the enemy forces her to undergo much anguish, through it she matures into wiser person. Many characters that belongs to non-loli category, especially the ones that sports short or medium hair with air of independence, can be said to inherit some of the characteristics of Sayla, with examples being Saber, Riza Hawkeye, Kusanagi Motoko, and perhaps Sato Sei, Isurugi Noe, and A-tan from Hayate no Gotoku. Ginrei was heralded as Mecha series lady of 1990, until Ayanami Rei and Hoshino Ruri turned people's attention elsewhere. So, was the Shana surge just a one-off, or will there be a reverse of the result from last week? Notably there were around 2k less votes than in the Mio-Mikoto match. So there's still a signifcant pool that don't seem to be out for Shana matches that are ready to come to a Mio match. Would they also come to a Mikoto match? Because really, I'd imagine the Mio supporters will vote Mikoto. They wouldn't want to let Shana reach the grand finale.

I'm pretty late on this but here are my usual thoughts:

Azusa got close but in the end couldn't quite get the job done against Shana. This makes three matches in a row that Shana has been in that I've miscalled. After Shana beat Hinagiku, I knew she was going to be close to Azusa but I was hoping Azusa could still pull off a win but I guess it didn't happen. I wonder if this means Shana is finally back to normal? I don't think the weakened Shana we saw earlier in Double Elimination could have beaten Hinagiku and Azusa. I guess we'll see in Shana's next match against Misaka Mikoto. Yuki put up a decent performance on Haruhi. It was more or less as expected.

I don't see Mio losing to either Shana or Mikoto so it's likely Mio will be the owner of the tiara this year. But after everything Mikoto has gone through to get to this point, I think she deserves the tiara almost as much as Mio or Shana.

Even if she doesn't win the tiara this year, Mikoto did an excellent job getting this far compared to last year. (But to make a statement that she will be back next year, one more victory over Shana wouldn't hurt. And if she replaces Shana as the heel next year, I would support her anyway. :D)

All this depends if people want a K-ON champion. They may not care if Mio beats Mikoto, since if Mikoto goes over to the loser's bracket, Shana or others may have a better chance at going to the finals. Shana eliminated Azusa in a VERY close race, and I have a feeling that even if Shana fans recruited a lot of other voters, K-ON! fans won't take Azusa's loss quietly and Mio might decimate Shana even more than she did Mikoto.

Honestly, I'm hoping that Shana WILL win this year's Tiara, but her current position, personally, puts her at a disadvantage if she does face Mio.
