I KNOW!!! But his desktop looks like Fluxbox. I used Fluxbox, so i know what it looks like, i'm not just guessing. And that looks nothing like windows and doesn't sem to act like windows either.

hehe, the only thing windows about those comps is that its ntfs, asides that it uses nothing windows related. The gui is blackbox, they have a windows version now, I got an old version and modded the source so it would work like i wanted it to. Yeah my personal comp uses dual monitor and windows, but my others comps have solaris on one, gentoo on two.
I dont really find that resolution too high, i wanted to make it 3200 x 1200 but its at 2560 x 1024 right now which is readable. I dont have any good wallpapers for the higher one so I left it at this. My gentoo has a resolution of like 2048x1538, thats pwn resolution :)
I wish they had fluxbox for windows ^^

Uh, the Graphical User Interface of Linux... is.. what ever the heck you want it to look like.

That there looks pretty much like Windows XP.. but, it's Linux.. And of course.. if you look around for FVWM2 screenshots, you'll see that you can much get a WIndows XP, 95, etc look as well.

The Linux DE is whatever you want it to be. Use one of the many already out there, or make your own from scratch.

Directly answering your question, BlackBox is a Window Manager (WM) for X11 type servers. Simply put, it's one of the desktop environments/ways you can manage your windows on the Linux platform.

And as xargon already mentioned, there _is_ a blackbox shell replacement for Windows. That's probably what was in the screenshot. Give it a google, and you'll find it.
W00t Linux desktop! There haven't been enough of those lately. What distro are you running? I would post a shot of my desktop but it hasn't really changed much (and I don't need it to).

(PS: rep++ :D)Lol... same here... only thing that's changed on my desktop since my last screenshot is the wallpaper, and the fact that I have two gkrellm windows running now... One for this computer, and one monitoring my headless gentoo box. Hmm.. the "desktop" on that box isn't very interesting anyways... there is none lol. haha, nothingness!

But anyways.. if I ever get around to changing any window decorations... I may post again... I dunno. Or, maybe it's been so long since anyone's seen my desktop, so I'll post my current one anyways. ? hmm

Hrmm... i got a new desktop for my laptop... lineage 2 theme... but my laptop is off right now... and i'm too lazy to turn it back on now. Well, you'll have a new screenshot from me tomorrow.

And thank you to rcxAsh and xargon for helping with my error of identifying. I indeed knew that blackbox had been ported to windows... but i like the look of XP. I don't think i'll be changing it.

Finally i have taken a screenshot of my laptop desktop ^_^

If you notice up at the top right, i do have Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Lineage II. I also have Steam on that computer, but i didn't put the icon on the destkop. Oh.. there are a few icons also on the desktop... mostly school work or unfinished projects. Obscene-e is the file that blocks out naughty words in Lineage II, so i decided to see what would happen if i took it out.

I have 5 other colors (one for each iMac color). Exactly 1 for everyday of the week counting the two versions of the lightblue one ^_^ Personally I think Strawberry and Tangerine are the best. Today is Lime tho.

Ok, heres where i come in handy ^_^

There is two ways to do it, and i have tried both ways, so i know.

First way, you need an nVidia card. Get the new drivers from the nVidia site. A little systray icon should appear... if it doesn't just right click on your desktop, and go to nView properties. Then go to effects and click the enable transparency box. Tadaaaa... transparent. ^_^ The only downside i find with this way is that when you go into graphic intensive programs (iTunes in my case), the transparency goes away. It might just be my card... it's a little old -_-'

The second way is to get style xp. The new version is very nice.. get it from themexp.org i think. Once you get that, click the transparency tab, and set the taskbar to transparent. The cool thing about this is you can make the start menu, taskbar, and start menu menu's transparent as well. After you set stuff to transparent, go to the main menu, and select do not use any resources... if you don't plan to skin as well. That will give you transparency, without using your system resources. This does not have the downside of the previous way!

Alright..... it's been a very long while since I posted a desktop anywhere.

So.. here's my current one. There isn't much to show for the wallpaper except for Yukari and Nyamo in the corner, so I left some of my windows up to make it look less boring.

Window decorations are still the same ones I've had for the past couple months or so. I like them.... so, yah.

Cool things going on... I now have two gkrellm monitors running. lostech is the computer you're looking at. ayumu is a headless box in my closet. So, not going to post a screenshot of that box... nothing to show ;)

Anyways. So, explanations of windows.... we have Gaim.. some aterms, Beep Media Player (yay, supports unicode, and can convert shift-jis ID3 tags to unicode on the fly). Also, the gtk distcc monitor. (Showing how ayumu and lostech work together to compile software for each other)

Comment on rcxAsh's screencap, I don't think I can actually read what's within the terminal, seeing as how both the font and the background color uses some sort of gray variants. And the other thing I noticed among linux gurus is that they like using stylish yet unreadable fonts on the application header, personally, I don't like it, but whatever.
Hehe, regarding the terminal colours. When I focus one, the foreground becomes white, instead of the grey that you see in the other two terminals. Hmm, but you bring up a good point. I've been using my aterm the way it is for so long that I have forgotten that I can change the font color. :heh: Since I'm using a light background now, perhaps I will use a black foreground.

Oh, and regarding the unreadable title bars. Yah, they're hard to read. But, I don't find myself reading application title bars much anyways. I do hear what you say and I'm probably due for a change soon.

I used to use strictly straight and sharp fonts. But then, for some reason, I decided to try out a cursive font for parts of the environment. It just looked more relaxed and carefree to me.

When I get some time, I want to see about getting my title bars on the sides of the wnidows instead of the top. I wonder how that will be?

Hehe. BTW, nice enlightenment environment there. How is enlightenment anyways? Size and speed wise good?

CRAPPY????? What are you talking about??? Lol, my laptop (about 6 months old) only has a 2.4 GHZ processor, with 512 ram and an ATI AGP card. And it's not even sony... (vaio's are sexy) it's not crappy at all!! I'll take it if you don't want it.

My old desktop at 1.0Ghz performed much better in that aspect. I'm not necessarily just bitching about it though. I just wish I'd bought a desktop with comprable stats, since I never move the laptop. All the same, I love the way it looks, and I spend waaay too much time fiddling around with it, despite my complaining :heh: Oh. Hehe, I've never had any experience with widescreen, so I'll take your word for it. Some of the performance that you're getting sounds kind of strange though. I'd think that you'd get somewhat good performance. Well, at least you get to watch your anime widescreen! That must be so nice.

Anyways... I think that I personally b*tch too much about my computer anyways.. so I probably shouldn't be one to say anything hahaa :heh:

To bad theres no good way to cool your laptop. That is a major factor in why your computer runs slow. It has to much power for its own good. In my case with the computer I built, after about 5 mins of doing anything remotely demanding the my cpu temp would be in the 130's-140's. That made it run like Shit and endangerd my processor -_-. Now with my kick ass heat sink it runs a mere 110 with Doom 3 and idles at 75 !

In the picture those are the spots where i dump my keyboard and my mouse when im not using it. What you cant see is my bed thats right infront of my setup. My rooms small so I usually lean agains my wall on my bed and put my keyboard in my lap when i need to use it, and my bed is my mouse pad ^_^ *optical mouse btw. makes things much easier*

Underclocking and Overclocking "Isnt Possible With Certain Motherboards". UC'ing and OC'ing all depend on your motherboard.

Some mobos you have to move the jumpers around on the thing while others like mine come with and OC menu in the bios. My perticular mobo also has this chip called "CoreCell" which has a built in OC menu program that Lets me OC mine comp.

*Note* Also the compadibility of your memory is a factor too

Heres a pic of it. I OC'ed it a lil for shits and giggles I usually have it on stock settings 3.0ghz 200fsb

As far as getting back your original settings from Oc'ing or UC'ing I dont see why you wouldnt be able to do that.... All you do is put everything back to the way it was and it'll be the same. The only risk of of messing with the computer speed is really OC'ing. You wont blow up your comp but fry it if you goto far. All in all though they are all safe to try if you know how to mess with your settings. No real risk of losing stuff on you HDD either.

As for the transparent taskbar, I use StyleXP (I know, I know, I'm a sellout :heh: ) but oh well. Whatever looks good, eh? I run the ATi, but don't use any of its functions. Anyways, here's my real desktop

Ooh, you can't escape the blue screen of death. It's Microsoft's favourite thing!

Ok..lol. But truthfully. Did you know that in Windows 95/98, you could customize the color scheme of the blue screen of death? There was some configuration fine somewhere that allowed you to specify the foreground and background colours. Eg, I once had my BSoD appear red instead.

Inuzuka - Aaah! My eyes! my eyes! How on earth can you work on such a bright desktop? I have no qualms with the design but it's just too white! I can't even read the icon labels since they've been antialiased to white on the edges.

Shay : V.Cute!! However, once more my eyes were blinded open revealing the spoiler space. I'm now going to wear shades before I suffer any permanent retinal damage. :heh:

Please explain. Sure. Simply put, In a CRT screen an electron 'gun' fires high energy electrons at 'phosphor' dots on the inside of the CRT screen, which then convert this energy into light which we see. However, if very bright static images are constantly displayed on the screen for too long (we are probably talking quite a while here though, my comment was partly made in jest ;) ) - then the phosphors can end up producing a low level amount of light all the time (even when the screen should be black), which looks like a shadow of the image that was there previously.

It's a very much like when you look at a bright object, then look across to a dark area - you can see a faded version of the image in your eyes for a short time. Luckily our eyes are a bit better at handling it than CRT's :)

It is a phonomenen known as 'burn-in', which is what screensavers are supposed to protect against. Usually, keeping an image moving is sufficient to prevent this happenening even if it is very bright.

Anyway, enough of that - let's see some more cracking walls! I'm sure i've bored people enough!

Well....If one looks closely at the image, it will be obvious (for those with photoshop knowledge) that Plastic Wrap has been used numerous times. On what, I don't know. Lot's of layers have been Plastic Wrapped, at least 3-4. At which time, they have been distorted using the distort filters (for instance Shear). Another thing I see in it, is that a small Radial Blur (Zoomed mind you) might have been used on one (or more?) layers (duplicates of the original layers) creating the glowy effect on those original layers.

Right, something just popped in my mind, maybe the Plastic Wrap was used on some randomly placed Lens Flares on a couple of different layers. If so, then the layer modes of those particular layers must have been Screen if the Lens Flare was put on a black background (seems the most logical to me :eyespin: )

Furthermore, a grid has been used too.
For the more lighter parts (on the right for instance) there could have been a Lens Flare below it, or it could have been lightened by the Dodge Tool.

Lot's of things I can get out of it :eyespin:

Hehe, you like the window decorations eh? I made them myself ^_^ (the title bar decorations that is).

The scroll bars and stuff were made by someone else. But I needed to make some window decorations that matched that scheme. In addition, the decorations that I was using previously was meant for the standard title bar on top. So the buttons lookind kind of out of place.

Having the title bars on the side is quite the experience! I think I like it. It's great for when I shade the windows, because my screen is wider than it is tall. And of course, being different is just a nice perk.. hahah :heh:

I got the image from a link provided on 4chan, though I've had to edit it to fit a 4:3 aspect ratio. There are a few more that are not yet edited to 4:3, but I should hopefully get them done soon. Though only one is slightly less ecchi than the version that you have just seen. Another is just about at the same level of ecchi.

Yet, I haven't decided on how I want to build around the one yuri picture. Only there's likely no chance of being allowed to post it here.

New desktop, er..I think just found it now and thought it looked quite cool, though I may have just got it from this here thread I can't remember.

Desktop's a bit of a mess right now but well i'm in the middle of a "project". Anyway I figured if ya gonna post ya desktop ya might aswell just post it how it is right? Or should I hide everything and make look oh so clean when in fact it's far from clean?

Right click on the task bar, then properties, and then put a tick in the auto hide task bar box. Then the only time you'll see the task bar is if the mouse pointer is over where the task bar is.

Lol, i don't mind telling again. You want the taskbar to have true transparency, not just have it hidden, as Taliesin suggested.

There are two ways of going about this. It really depends on your video card. If you have an nVidia based video card, just get the latest drivers, which come with something cool called nView. To enable transparency with nView, right click on your desktop, select nView properties, go to the effects tab, and check the box that says enable taskbar tranparency, and there you can also set the level of transparency.

If you don't have an nVidia card, the way i do it on my laptop is with TGTSoft's StyleXP, and it works beautifully. Get the latest version of StyleXP from themexp.org, and install it. To enable transparency with StyleXP, open up the StyleXP control panel, and select transparency from the left side menu, and you can select what you want transparent and also what level of transparency you would like. I actually like this way better because you can make your whole start menu transparent, not just the taskbar. If you are not going to skin your system, and don't want to take up any resources, you can actually tell StyleXP to use no resources, on the main page of the control panel for StyleXP. It will still render the transparency, without taking up your resources.

Yeah, StyleXP seems not to have an automagic updater... and with each new version of the program, more cool features are added... so it pays to update once in a while. Hopefully one of the new features will be an automagic updater.

As mentioned in the spoiler: it's from SaishuuHeiki Kanojo (also known as Saikano or She, the ultimate weapon) . It's indeed a romance anime as you guessed but a bit different from the usual ones :D (yes major understatement here :heh: ), personally I think this is one of the best things ever made, very emotional, warmly recommended. Oh I should mention it left me quite shocked and speechless for half a week after seeing it :)

mines so plain. T-TThis site (http://oukyu.oheya.to/) is obviously one of teh best site for winamp skins IMO (not like those crappy sites that provide crappy skins).
It's Japanese though, but very easy to go in.
You could also have a try on the webring that you can see at the bottom of that site, but there are only 2-3 more that really have nice skins IMO ;)

Well mine is all Mac OSX stuff, but you can get a similar album cover display thing with Samurrise (is that what it's called?) Though I'm not sure you'll have all the functions that I do. i.e. change playlist with a simple click, burn the current playlist, basically all the real functions of iTunes (That's what I'm using)

And you have the actual poster... thats even cooler... i want it!!! Lol, just kidding... but KGNE is my FAVOURITE anime of ALL time! Nothing beats that series... it was the first one i cried at... and cried i did. So sad.

Technically, it *IS* still a wallpaper - just one suited for display on portrait rather than landscape screens. I often switch between the two as portrait mode is really handy for word processing and forum viewing like this :)

I did make a cut down version into a standard landscape wallpaper size but I cut off Mitsuki's head (although I suspect many fans of KGNE would like to do this in reality XD ) and Akane looks much too 'body-less'. Hopefully you can make something sensible out of it. Have fun!

My newest wallpaper. I realize the quality of the wallpaper isn't that great, i resized the image from 640x480, from a screen cap. I think it's pretty cool, i think ^_^

Forgot to mention, i shrunk my screen shot to 800x600, so as not to make the file size too big.
