You want to change your taskbar. I know that "Windows Blinds" seems to work fairly well in this circumstance.

The time, is that how long it has been since you changed your background or the time your computer has been on?

For XP, you can either use the uxtheme.dll mod, in which it removes the Microsoft-only theme block so that you can use any .msstyle file. (free might I add)
OR
You can go the expensive way and buy either WindowBlinds or StyleXP

Those are the two ways that I know of. If you have Mac, you can buy InterFacelift.

also, you might want to check out WordPlay's site.

I Use This
Style Xp 3.19 : for logon screen
Windowblinds 5.1 : Visual Styles, Explorer Bar Icons, Copy/Delete etc Animation
Icon Packager : change my icons on thos beautiful black ones
Objectdock PLUS : hides taskbar, desktop icons
LogonBooutUIRandomizer ; change my bootscreen, currently mine is like that vista, w/ only the loading screen, eg. microsoft corporation
Quickchanger ; switches wallpapers easily, automatically changes every 1 min/depends on how you set it.
Rainmeter :
Rainlendar :
TweakUI : puts a background image on my explorer bar

Back when I had windows, that would have killed my computer. That's an insane amount of programs to change your UI.
Right now all I have is the BricoPack and WindowBlinds 5.1 on my Windows XP BootCamp partition.

Sorry if I sounds harsh, but I just got finished with a half-hour argument on IRC about the security in Mac, Linux, and Windows.

Yeah it really kills your PC, when I use it on my old PC. but my current/new PC is stable my CPU process is 1-5% i never reach to 80-100% since im using a Intel C2D, and a 1GB ram

You mean ShapeShifter (http://www.unsanity.com/haxies/shapeshifter)? I have a license for that (got it in a bundle with other, useful apps) and I don't use it.

IIRC it uses Application Enhancer which uses an InputManager thing to hook into all the running applications. Makes me nervous doing weird stuff that touches all running apps. Last time I had it installed it was making stuff crash all the time.

This screenshot is scarin the hell outta me. My laptop has started overheating today. It has shutoff due to heat more than once today.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y45/Honda_Boy/Screenshots/heat.jpg

What sucks, is that's not even the hottest it's got. It peaked at 94 during a Spybot S&D scan. And remember, these temps are Celsius.

I use 3 HD so the one the the middle heats up quite considerably >.<, since this stupid case like to stuff my HD so closely. I didn't read up on that when I was buying this computer a year. I'll be sure to check for this next time ^_^ Of course I didn't check the temperature but I can just feel it and it's quite hot, probably 100 +

What's that? Hard drive heat?

A processor hitting 90 C is almost as good as melted. Better look for a way to lower the temperature.

Interesting, because before i got my mac, my HP notebook usually ran a CPU temp of around 80~95c, and the first thing to die on it was the hard drive. And this was a 2.4GHz Celeron. Then again, that was because HP had a badly designed cooling system in that computer, and it ran that way for 5 years before my cousin killed the HD.

As of right now, my Core2Duo is running at 62c while running full blown windows apps that eat CPU.

this thing was hittin 94 running Spybot S&D. I got it down to 43 idle right now but that's cause it's sittin on an A/C vent. Also just for the heck of it, i checked my SLi 7600GT's (main rig), under load they hit 85 (ToCA Race Driver 3). BUT, my Athlon 64 3500+ Venice (main rig) idles at 33-37 and maxes in the 40's underload. my old Athlon XP 3000 started to die at 65 and that's what my lappy was idling at earlier.

Well, yeah, processors need a bit more than 100 C to break down completely, but even yet, having 90 C on it is really really close to the breaking point. AMD processors are a less resistant, so watch out even more if you have one of those. However, it always depends on the model and whether it has one or two cores, and even then, YMMV a lot.

it's Celeron 440 1.86GHz. my old Sempron laptop never came close to those temps, then again, it had a feature to slow the processor down while not under load. slowed it from 1.6GHz to 800MHz. I loved that feature cause it also reduced fan noise. This one's fan has been going almost non-stop since I've had it. It's still spinning up here and there while sitting on the A/C vent.

these morons kept trying to get me to do stuff with the BIOS and power management controls. They gave me a whole list of instructions to do something, not once did I see anything they were talking about.......the gave me the XP instuctions. I kept trying to tell them that it could possibly be bad contact between the processor and the heatsink. Maybe the thermal paste is bad or something. I'm also startin to suspect this just may be normal temps. I'll be keeping an eye on it and if the temps don't get better or worse over the next week, I'm just gonna assume it's fine. I've always set it on a hard surface on the floor (side panel of an old computer) so it could get better air flow.

Well, I'll have a new desktop up soon. I decided to trash my Kubuntu install on the computer in the corner since I never use it (only boot once in a blue moon and it usually is only on for 15 minutes when i do), and I'm installing XP on it. I'm gonna use it as a media box temporarily until I can afford to build a real media box. It's gonna be hooked up to my TV. I used to use my laptop for this but now it's gettin so hot while playing vids that it can't even play an ep of an HD anime correctly anymore (1280x720 .mkv files). The video starts laggin and it's unbearable to watch. SO, my laptop is being demoted to the sole purpose of school work and internet.

and for the heck of it, my Linux desktop before I trashed it.

Well, my attempt at converting my Kubuntu rig into a Windows XP video box failed. I dug up parts and swapped parts from other computers to upgrade it from a GeForce2 MX400 to a GeForce 6600GT, 256MB or RAM to 768MB, mechanical to optical mouse, and other to only have it fail just as miserably as before at displayin HD anime (Darker Than Black 1280x720). I guess the Athlon XP 2000 is bottlenecking more than I thought. I figured the 6600GT would have been all it needed but apparently the processor is too slow unless the integrated audio is bogging it down. I may pull the SB Live! 5.1 from my old Compaq and see if it helps.

Other than that it performed perfectly in non-HD anime whether .mkv or .avi. It played .mkv's of El Cazador and School Days just fine.

I need to copy my anime wallpaper archive over to it and install the theme patch soon. Right now it's rockin the standard XP theme and Bliss wallpaper. So there's no point in me postin the screen shot for it. maybe tomorrow after work.

Unless the video card has integrated h264 decoding (which the 6600GT, AFAIK, doesn't have), it won't help one tiny bit at playing h264 files.

wish i could use it.. but i can't be bothered to tinker with all that stuff :frustrated:

ie: SMplayer and softsubs.... ugh...Huh? I use Mplayer and with just adding these 4 short lines in the mplayer configuration file (~/.mplayer/config):

sid=0
ass=1
embeddedfonts=1
correct-pts=1...it displays any softsub you throw at it perfectly. At any rate, if you don't use that small configuration, the only thing you lose is the font customization--everything else works just fine.

You say "tinkering"... it's really not that hard for most things (I'll understand any complaints about editing the xorg.conf file or enabling kernel modules for some exotic hardware), and Windows requires tons of "tinkering" with a vanilla installation (that is, not a preinstalled one).

The only thing that Linux requires is to get used to it. Once you do so, the freedom you get as a tradeoff just plain rocks. You really don't realize how much caged in your software you are until you stop using Windows.

I assume you're using some Windows flavor.

Look in your keyboard for a little key named "Prnt Screen" or "Print Screen". Press it and that will make a clipboard copy of your screen. Now go to any image editing software (MS Paint, for example) and paste it with Edit-->Paste or Control+V in your keyboard. Finally save it as a JPG (don't do it as a BMP, the default in MS Paint... filesize is too big) and upload it to any free image hosting sites like imageshack.us.

So... is the 10.3 flavour any good?Yes, as I gather (this is my first time with OpenSUSE) it's a much more polished release when compared to the past 10.x releases. I found it quick-booting, responsive, bug-free, and perhaps a bit more user-friendly than Ubuntu in most aspects other than package management, though I've heard that YaST has been dramatically improved.

That really bugged me.The trash can being at the bottom is an Ubuntu choice. I moved it to the desktop myself, and since I was just upgrading, my configuration remained the same.

As for GNOME 2.20, there's been an overall improvement of its appearance. Things are smaller, more compact, which counts for a better look, and yes, they fixed the window listing--now each window button has a fixed width. Things are a bit snappier, and they reorganized the Themes/Fonts/3D effects (Compiz Fusion) under an "Appearance" tab, which is kind of cool. Font rendering is better. There are some minor improvements here and there, but each and everyone of them is really good, and so far I haven't found a single step in the wrong direction. And the new Clearlooks theme is just gorgeous. Now, if they only improved Nautilus a bit...

Ubuntu overall has updated most of the packages (and added AppArmor from openSUSE), but the biggest news is that it now includes Compiz-Fusion by preconfigured by default, which is a good thing for people that have headaches trying to make the stuff work.

I shun iChat because it can only connect to the AIM network or jabber. You can only have a single AIM account connected. If you have AIM, .Mac, and Jabber connected you get three buddy list windows. Weak. The only useful thing in iChat (at least in 10.4) is video chat but no one I know has a webcam so its pretty useless. Come to think of it I don't have a webcam now either :)

iChat in Leopard looks pretty sweet with the screen and document sharing. I think I'll still stick with Adium though since its prettier :)

Sweet, thanks for the info. I may have to go make me a external boot HD for it. Just I hope this one won't be as big a hassle as getting my old HP up and running in 7.04.

WanderingKnight

Well, if he uses Linux or Mac, that's when he'll miss something:

GAMES.Well, most popular games can be played through a huge hack called WINE, which is an emulation layer (not a true emulator) for Windows applications. Most regular Windows apps work quite good under WINE, but games, due to their inherent complexity, require either a bit of hacking, or simply good luck. However, most popular games like WoW and Source-engine based games (Half Life 2 et al.) can be played flawlessly, most of times with better framerates than Vista, sometimes even better than XP. There are a couple of native games, such as every Quake and most Unreal Tournaments, and even Neverwinter Nights (the client for Linux can be directly downloaded from BioWare's homepage!).

But yes, don't expect every game out there to work. The WINE project is huge, and it's under heavy development (current version is 0.9.47 or something, adding a new 0.0.01 each two weeks), but it's still missing the flexibility required to run most games flawlessly. However, if you have the RAM and the power, you can use Cedega, which is WINE's paid counterpart... most of times, games are guaranteed to work under Cedega, since it's a true emulator (Virtual Machine). You need a lot of horsepower though.

At any rate, I don't plan on gaming on my PC anymore. It's becoming too expensive, so expensive that I'd rather pay for a console and be perfectly guaranteed that the games will work no matter what, unlike the PC where I have to pray for that new hardware I bought to play that one game not to be outdated the following week.

But still, to each his own. I love the freedom Linux gives me, the feeling of being unbound from the chains Windows straps on you is awesome... but that doesn't mean you have to like it too. What is truly important, though, is to dispel the notion that Windows = PC. A PC is a PC, and an OS is an OS. Even Macs are PCs. Most people directly associate PCs to Windows and don't even understand the concept of an OS, so they don't know there are alternatives to it (other than Macs that lately have been getting a lot of press, but that doesn't help very much since they also use the paradigm Windows = PC in their advertisements). I want people to use Windows because they chose Windows among the competitors, not because they got whatever the store was selling (which is what happens now among most computer-illiterate people). Things are changing a bit, though, Linux awareness has been slightly but steadily increasing the last few years, though people are still as computer-illiterate as before, so that doesn't help much.

Like, can you have less than 8desktops showing at once (other than in "Cube Mode")?You can have as many virtual desktops as you want (there's an actual limit, but it's huge). There are a lot of effects that can't be shown on a picture. If you want to see more, go get some videos like this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fz7lfUa711k). You can look for them yourself (search for "Compiz Fusion", which is the name of the program). Also, this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ku_FdeUgtCo) is a favorite of mine, showing lots of stuff on Linux.

It's not you that fails, it's XP's inability to incorporate overlays into it's screenshots.

i hear the newest flavour of ubuntu can read/write to the NTFS filesystem now... that's one step closer for it replacing WinXP on my desktop :DUbuntu (and Linux in general) have had NTFS read/write support since quite some time ago... You just had to install a little app called ntfs-3g, that's all. Ubuntu 7.10 just included it out of the box. You could even find it in the official repos for Ubuntu 7.04.

I found out that it can read/write HFS+ (Mac format) also, which was strange for me when I had windows how Mac could read/write the windows drive (but not vise-versa), and then I tried Ubuntu 7.10 and I could read/write the HFS+ in Ubuntu, but couldn't mount the exf3 (I think that's what it was) format in OS X.

that's the kinda stuff that noobs like me don't know until someone tells me about it :heh:You know, there's this nice tool called Google (http://www.google.com) that can help you. A lot. That's one thing lots of people seem to have problems keeping in mind--don't expect the solution to come to you, go look for it yourself. If you Google for ubuntu ntfs write support (http://www.google.com/search?num=50&hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=com.ubuntu%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=Ouu&q=ubuntu+ntfs+write+support&btnG=Search), the first hit would take you to a comprehensible HOW-TO that explains what I said earlier. I was a total newbie to Linux back in April, yet every problem I've found was tackled by means of Google and a bit of patience. After all, it's a new operating system, don't expect it to be hassle-free the first time you try it.

If more people did that, we would surely see a less crowded Ubuntu support forum.
