It's Compiz Fusion's snow plugin... :) XGL is not required to run Compiz Fusion if your driver supports AIGLX, which both the latest ATI and Nvidia drivers do.

Don't know what Stardock is but what I'm using is Compiz Fusion (http://youtube.com/watch?v=E4Fbk52Mk1w)'s snow plugin. Basically, those things that are falling is duplications of a picture (or texture) I import into the program. So if I want to, I can put leaf texture and there would be leaf falling. :heh: (not sure how well it would work or how good it would look though). The snow plugin has to installed manually; however, I think the program Compiz Fusion only works with Linux and is not compatible with Windows. I'm not sure about Mac OSX.

I found one I like for the main rig too but I don't feel like turning it on right now. Should have a new rig somewhere around a month or so. My bad DVD buying habits screwed up my original build schedule. My TV rig is going down the crapper right now too :( I may have to go back to hookin my laptop up to the TV to watch my fansubs now that I got the heat issue under control (thank you Arctic Silver 5). The upside is the laptop, even with Vista and a Celeron M 440, can still handle HD .mkv's while my old Athlon XP 2000+ TV rig can't. Once I get my new rig going, my Athlon 64 3500+ rig will be the new TV rig.

No special holiday required. Just check out Ginza for example :3 Bright & busy every evening.

How does everyone do that alt+tab cube effect..so you can browse through your running programs like a cube..
Reason being is that i am using Windows Vista and the Aero windows flip..which i dislike.

The cube is from Linux. It's not a out of the box thing, but easy to set up.

On windows Xp there's an alternative but it's too resource expensive, I don't advise using use.
If you're using Firefox there's a extension that will add the effect when you change tabs.

it's a complete system overhaul. I used Vista Transformation Pack 2 and WindowBlinds 6. WindowBlinds just controls the blurred window borders, so there's really no huge reason for it. And yes, the Start Menu runs just like Vista with the cascading folders, the search bar, and the changing icon when you roll over things.

and if you're wondering, i'm using Astonshell instead of the usual "explorer.exe" shell that likes to die.

and that clockspeed reading at the bottom is correct. my computer at low loads runs at .94ghz at 1v, then under high loads will ramp up to 2.6ghz at 1.7v (but i should back it off to about 2.56-2.58 just for added stability, nothin crashes, but it doesn't hurt)

ahhh icons! lol jk. i haven't had desktop icons for the past 3 or 4 years now. my desktop folder, if i let it show up on the desktop, would overload the system haha.

Well, I keep the icons that I'm most likely to use and I keep them clean. I always have auto arrange on and I group them by what kind of program they are and by order of release for the game sequels. Like I keep all my media and anime related icons right after Firefox. Then I keep the first set of games which is BF2 and it's expansion and a mod. Then All the CoD's that I still play. After that is all my Steam games I play then the racing games and StepMania. Then by it's lonesome is Fraps. All the game icons out of the way, we have all my work program icons. All the Office Ultimate 2007 icons for the programs I actually use (left 3 or 4 off) then my gVim and NetBeans for Programming I.

I have an organizational system. At least it's not like my old rig from a bout 2 years ago. Icons out the wazoo. You should see some of my teachers from high school and college though. Theirs are absolutely COVERED in icons. I don't see how they find anything (one actually couldn't, it'd take him 5 minutes to find is power point for the lecture).

1 thing to keep in mind is that you edit the config file to match your situation, an example being the harddisk having different drive-letters (instead of the C and E that I got).

Well, I keep the icons that I'm most likely to use and I keep them clean. I always have auto arrange on and I group them by what kind of program they are and by order of release for the game sequels. Like I keep all my media and anime related icons right after Firefox. Then I keep the first set of games which is BF2 and it's expansion and a mod. Then All the CoD's that I still play. After that is all my Steam games I play then the racing games and StepMania. Then by it's lonesome is Fraps. All the game icons out of the way, we have all my work program icons. All the Office Ultimate 2007 icons for the programs I actually use (left 3 or 4 off) then my gVim and NetBeans for Programming I.

I have an organizational system. At least it's not like my old rig from a bout 2 years ago. Icons out the wazoo. You should see some of my teachers from high school and college though. Theirs are absolutely COVERED in icons. I don't see how they find anything (one actually couldn't, it'd take him 5 minutes to find is power point for the lecture).

that's what the drop down menus on the top of my desktop do in aston. One is games, I keep all my game icons there, one is internet, (has my browsers) and one is tools, which has my most used IM programs, bittorent, and a couple other things. other than that my computer isn't ICON hell as much as it is "ZOMG FILES EVERYWEARRRRR" I occasionally will collect all the rar's and images into their own folders. I recently cleaned my torrent folder and sorted out all my anime. My computer's pretty clean and organized untill you start digging into the old folders. When i say old, i'm saying 2003 old haha. (yes, i have folders and files from 2003 on this computer. these hard drives didn't even EXIST in 2003)

I think i've moved from..4 different computers. Moved from a p3 1ghz gateway to my dad's Athlon XP system, then rebuilt the P3 box and moved back to it, then built a AMD Duron box and moved to it, then the duron box died when my sister knocked the tower so i moved BACK to the P3 box, then i repaired the Duron box and upgraded it to an Athlon64 3200 which is its current state. Yep yep, a lot of these files are so damn old but I don't really want to clean it up (it would only save me MAYBE a gig of space IF i'm that lucky)

Well, within my Documents I have a whole file system grouping different things with others to make it easy to find stuff and even My Pictures has all the pics grouped. My External HDD with all my anime has them split into 4 main Categories. Current, Finished, Dead, and Singles (OVAs and movies). And within them they are all split up into series.

I have one heck of an organization system for everything if I do say so myself. It drives me insane to see people use their desktop like it's My Documents. I also keep the My Documents folder on a separate drive so incase windows goes sour, I won't lose my crap in a format.

Oh and like you, I have some OLD files. Maybe not 03 old but some have been around a while.

I never format my drive when window dies. I simply install it into a new folder, then delete the old folder. Saves me a lot of trouble. But now i have 2 drives with an OS installed. Vista on one and XP on my main.

That isn't a winamp skin it's a rainmeter skin (the CPU usage and other things should've given it away even though you can control winamp through it since that was minimized to the taskbar at that time)

I have a friend who's an expert with computer and recommends that I still use XP Pro for the next 5 years. And my desktop isn't anything special, i've heard numerous people tell me that running a different shell on your OS will reduce speeds.

Well, I think not very many people use Vista (for reasons unknown :p). I have a vista lookalike desktop, but its still XP thanks to windowblinds. Vista will probably be more popular in 3 years when everyone is in check like XP is now.

Drag the rainmeter icon to your startup folder. (Should be in Start > Programs > Startup) That should pretty much be it.

It's probably because you've got the original japanese version there is a link to another version of that skin where all the dialogue is in english on the page prior to this one.

Though I'm waiting on my new shiny 24" monitor to arrive... will be using new wallpaper and layout with the much roomier real estate. Finding quality 1920x1200 images is difficult. I only have a handful. :(

There are a lot more being made these days, but I dislike what most people 'make' as wallpaper. I prefer simple images, not all sorts of layered/blended stuff, and NEVER with any text... sometimes text ruins an otherwise great image. >.< So I regularly get large scans (or source CG) images and just scale it to my desired resolution and AR. Text removal is a chore I'm not fond of, but will do in some cases.

It's also fine to crop a 4:3 (or 5:4) image, sometimes, but the thing that really bugs me about wallpapers is people uploading any image smaller than 1280x1024 and claiming it's a wallpaper. >.< I STILL regularly see 800x600 stuff posted in wallpaper threads etc. 1024x768, too. Even 1280x1024 is fairly small, it vexes me. >.<

For people making wallpapers, they should aim for at least 1600x1200/1680x1050. People using lower resolutions can just downscale. -.- Ultimately it'd be great if images were made in say 2560x1600, with croppable edges to 4:3 ARs, that way anybody can scale or crop it to their desired resolution. But it'll never happen. ^^;
