I have fullscreen apps on all the time so I actually rarely even see my wallpapers, which also means I rarely use icons...they just are there.

And yeah, the gadget thing...never got that one. Disabled as soon as I could. Of course, with customization it makes the desktop more personal.

I never keep that many icons on my desktop not because it will block the content of the wallpaper, but I always want my desktop clean since having too many icons slow down the loading of the computer unless they are shortcuts. Same with gadgets, I never use them and I don't need another clock on my desktop... there is already one on the taskbar.

As far as gadgets go, I think mine are self explanatory. Gotta keep the gaming rig cool. Gotta know how much space I have left instantly (my old shortcut is just windows key + e but that's tedious considering how often I check free space). And of course knowing the weather since shit's unpredictable.

Also why do u guys use the taskbar... the one on the right with all the gadgets on it for vista... its an extreme processor hog... even after sp2 it's still slows down the computer =/

As for why I have those gadgets:


The clock is there as it's easier/quicker to read than the system tray clock,
The weather gadget is there for getting a weather forecast (it has a pop-out section giving the forecast for the next few days),
The slide-show gadget serves no purpose other than to show off artwork I found interesting, and
The RSS Feed gadget is there so I can keep track of fansubs as they come out.

Even for my somewhat flashy Sidebar setup, the whole process still uses just around 60MB RAM on my PC (I can make it even smaller, but the extra RAM consumption significantly reduces the number file I/O operations required by my gadgets and improves system performance).

However, I use Geektool on my Mac which uses even less memory than the Sidebar (about 18MB of memory used) and is alot more lightweight than Dashboard... However, I don't use the sidebar since I only have 2 GB of DDR3 ram installed on my laptop and it's pointless since I never have any use for it.

I would be very surprised if you can keep the memory usage of your Firefox that low most of the time, unless you never open more than a page on your browser or something like that.

Whether this is "excessive" or not depends on many factors. I don't think this is a big deal when you have like 2GB or even 4GB RAM, and you rarely use over 75% most of the time.

Dashboard on Mac OS X uses about the same amount of RAM, but I perfer Geektool since it does around the same thing without flashy gadgets with it's small footprint of 10 MB! I really don't need flashy... I just want it to tell information...

But, memory usage is important, especially when you play computer games since most computer games will use up most of that RAM... and lack of RAM will cause the game to run slowly. Also, in most cases, Vista will allocate the free RAM to speed up application launching using Superfetch which is a good thing...

For casual browsing, I don't usually have more than 3 tabs opened. I've seen memory usage around 50 MB to 80 MB or so. It might get over 100 MB if I'm looking at sites with heavy graphics.

I guess this is just me. I find anything over 10 MB with the sole purpose of making thing look pretty is excessive. But then I also use my computer for work too where I need to run CAD and simulations stuff so having free memory is kinda important.

I used a app called MakeitMine or something similar from Cydia since I hate the name AT&T and I prefer the name Cingular for some odd reason and it carries over after restoring the backup... and MiM should work on 3.0 without any problems...

Yeah I am well aware of the potential of using iM@S videos and materials as desktop animations. However, I don't know much about iM@S, and there are just too damn many iM@S videos on Nico to choose from without some suggestions and recommendations to filter the choices LOL What I am looking for are those videos that are faster-paced with more focus on dance and body movements rather than singing actions. Nice camera angle and panning would be a huge bonus. Do you have any such videos you can recommend?

I nuked my BootCamp partition and reinstalled Windows Vista Business X64 with SP2 because I thought it would fix my nvidia issues, but I fixed it already...

Theres nothing much on my desktop since I perfer having it clean and also I disabled the sidebar to save resources since Vista is used for gaming primarily.

I wouldn't say "without any impact". Depending on the complexity of the animation and the speed of your CPU, it can use up to 10% or more CPU time.

I decided to test it out, and having dreamscene on uses up to 11% more CPU usage... and when it's paused, the CPU usage overs around 4-7%... but it shouldn't make any real impact in performance unless you are playing games or encoding videos or anything CPU intensive

Very nice! The style is a weird cross between mac and windows....I have a mac, but have yet to figure out how to get widgets that stay on the desktop like that, instead of on Dashboard.

Taskbar is usually on auto-hide... whole load of desktop space, but not much use for it.
When browser (most often used programm) is running dock ang vidget are of course on auto-hide... And taskbar... I used to see it))
