Didn't realize the forums have different skins.

Anyway this was actually a png formatted image with full alpha channel but later I found out that no browsers have full support for png images with transparencies yet.
Converting it to gif degrades the image quality considerably. My vector drawings are antialised to hide the jaggies, so the resulting gif looked terrible (not to mention the ditherings)
Any tips? how did you make yours? (it looks awesome BTW)

One :) Read the forum rules (http://forums.animesuki.com/announcement.php?f=10&announcementid=2) and make sure the sig is within the limits. Seems using .png pushes the image size rather high.

My roommate's PC is almost covered with icons, sometimes I just feel the urge to highlight those shortcuts and throw em into the bin. http://www.shift-o.net/images/hiku.gifLol! Instead of throwing them into the bin, select them all, hold down the shift key and then press delete. (Keep the shift key depressed until the delete confirmation dialog comes up). This will skip the recycling bin ;)

Granted, something like that would probably eat my processor for lunch.. but it still looks nifty imo...

Though, if you really try hard, and get the right software, you can get a PC looking pretty good too. I guess stuff like Window Blinds/LiteStep/Aston shell for Windows.. and then fvwm2 does a pretty good job for *nix (or of course you could just write your own WM from scratch..).

Not trying to stir up debate, but just leave a note that some may find useful..

I don't know about Windows, but there have been attempts to recreate this feature for PCs (which use the X11 window system). Skippy (http://thegraveyard.org/skippy.php) is one of them.

Yeah. Same here. When I first started using Linux I had to have a taskbar, start menu, etc so I had KDE, then went to Windowmaker and I think I've finally settled on Enlightenment.

If you look at some of my more recent screenshots, minimized windows become thumbnails on the desktop.

Mine iconify to and sit in a little iconbox, but usually I just double click my title bar on a given window and all of the window disappears into the title bar just leaving a horizontal bar with the name. I like that best. :)

Heh heh yeah the table is pretty cluttered. And you know I really hate plastic ><;; I truly believe that the entire country of Taiwan is made out of o_o plastic.. however I can't get away from my race no matter how hard I try. And yes I try to keep things look "new" even when it's not possible.

YKK Wallpaper! Nice one! Actually, almost all of us moderators are big fans of that series. Curiously none of us told the others about it, we all found it on our own. I find that an interesting coincidence that tells me something about the people who that manga appeals to.

I disagree, Style XP from TGT soft is a WAAY better theme manager. It has built in function such as allowing you to change your start screen, loading screen, wallpaper, themes, etc.

Doesn't hog alot of resources, and therefore themes are alot better than windowblinds IMO.

I also like stylexp better.. mainly because it uses less resources since it is built upon window's existing theme system. I have'nt tried any stardock products lately though. I reccomend Aston (http://www.astonshell.com/) over window's blinds if you want to replace the entire shell.

Business as usual, I guess. I run Litestep with the Litebox theme - fits the wallpaper nicely, and it has no excess garbage.
The wallpaper follows same lines, along my aesthetic tastes - minimal, clean, and its cute to boot ... :D

In case you wonder about the high reso - the 21" monitor is heavy, but it gives a big, sharp image.

Ummm... I have a little question for everyone... I've recently started tinkering around with my new laptop, and it's an unusual 15.4 in widescreen. I'm currently running it in 1280 x 800 pixels, which is quite awkward when it comes to backgrounds and startup screens. Can anyone give me any suggestions on ways to make them look more natural? I've photoshopped the simpler backgrounds by adding extra image along the sides of standard 1024 x 768 wallpapers. Any other ideas? Any help would be appreciated ^^

Hrmm... i have used WindowBlinds and StyleXP in the past. I like both of them for different reason... but the funny thing is, i never stick with the skin that i chose for too long. I always go back to the normal XP look.. just because i like it. Its clean and simple... i don't want anything too fancy. People probably disagree with me on the XP look being cool... but i like it.

Anyways, heres my current wallpaper. I made it myself, and it sort of has a Half-life 2 theme with a Megatokyo character. I thought it was pretty cool

I'm running xorg actually, the composite extension is now in cvs. You also need to grab xcompmgr and transset to get it to work though.

Ke0: Check out Customize.org. A good number of the members there love minimalist themes. Another good site to check out is Neowin.net. And no--depending on what you want, you don't really need programs to change the look of your windows. I think you just have to replace a certain .dll file. You can check Neowin for more info regarding that.

He's using Style XP. The name of the skin is Community (ThemeXP variant). It is one of the basic skins that comes with the program so I won't have to tell you where to download it. It's one of my favorites also.

Ke0: Check out Customize.org. A good number of the members there love minimalist themes. Another good site to check out is Neowin.net. And no--depending on what you want, you don't really need programs to change the look of your windows. I think you just have to replace a certain .dll file. You can check Neowin for more info regarding that.


Yeah I know about those two sites, I get wallpapers for my Mac from Customize, and browse the Mac section of the Neowin forum. I'm very interested in Lite Step, can anyone shed more light on it, I didn't find too much that actually helped

I have to admit you're right. His wallpaper made just the right background to set off your choice of foreground. I also think you did a top rate job of merging the two into a perfect whole. Definite improvement! :)

Thanks riftwing. Didn't know that they had this already. I didn't have to get it from their CVS tree, however. There are official ebuilds out for the testing versions. Just had to add them to my package.unmask and package.keywords file. xcompmgr and transset were also in portage.

@Lord Raiden: Its not really resouce intensive. My idle cpu load is around 15-20% ( P4 2.4Ghz) and that's with azureus running in the background. I have a cript that turns off all eye candy when playing games though...

You have an nVidia card. Upgrade to the latest drivers. In the nView and stuff that it comes with, there is this ability. Can't remember what it's called. But basically, it allows you to add an application to a list, and then specify certain settings for it. Example, using that, MSN Messenger is always transparent now.

It works nicely with the taskbar and dragged windows. I think what rcxAsh meant was that he added applications he wanted to make transparent in the applications tab and then changed the settings from there. I'm not sure if this is right, but it is what i take. If this is the case, then you can't get normal windows explorer windows to be transparent.

I suggest trying the program Acutal Windows Manager. It is commercial software, and therefore is not free. You can check it out at http://www.actualtools.com/windowsmanager/

Hopefully that will work.

It can make program windows transparent, but only for programs. And to add all of those to that list is awful tedius work.I think what Wirhe wants is all windows to be transparent when you open them. Unfortunately, nView can't do this (to my knowlege)

Yeah, thats just about the same as the nVidia nView options. That would be enough for me (thats actually what i have) but some people would like all their windows transparent. Just a matter of preferance. Does Hydra Vision do that too, or only when dragged?

Yeah; all windows transparent, but also by selection. For example: have Mozilla and this board 20% transparent and regular explorer windows 50%. I know WindowBlinds could make this in one of their old versions, but it is now unavailable. I have also tried some of those basic tools, but none of them make the windows open up transparent and require you to manually set it (which is troublesome).

Anyway, have to check that WindowsManager -maybe it does the job.

You can do a lot of things with this program and hiding the recycle bin is one of those :)

I don't know, I wasn't the one who put all these wallpapers in here. When my computer broke down a while ago, I had a specialist reformat it, and when I got it back there were all these images and wallpapers etc. But I looked at the site, and it could be. Although I have to say, there are far more wallpaper images here than I saw on the site. *shrug*

Aside from hunting them on wallpaper sites, fandisks from *cough*those*cough* games generally contain loads of beautiful CGs in near-wallpaper size; get them from torrent, irc, or winny.

Yes, the series is absolutely hilarious. S3 is the best of the 4 so far as far as I'm concerned. It's as funny as Asumanga Daioh, but it's a different kind of funny. They do a lot of parody's on GA. :D

Well, i would suggest clearlypixelated.com, go to desktop anime, and look there. Erm... theres always animewallpapers.com, but i don't know if they have any in that size.

Goto the link that bubblehead put it has everything you could passibly want. For each os-tan there are 3 sections under their name that'll apear at the top of the screen. 1st row is random colored art, 2nd row is scetches and 3rd row are the wallpapers.

My wp is of 2k-tan, but i had to get rid of the the "windows 2000 profesional" tag that was in the bottom left hand corner since i use xp lol ^^ , and my sig is also some random art that i liked or me-tan.

Oh and bubblehead if you got anything else of Firefox-tan can u send it my way? Its really hard to find anything of her.

Its the same for any long-time windows user making the switch. But believe me when I say change is good. I recommend you download and burn a Knoppix LiveCD. Just stick the CD in your computer when you turn it on and you can boot into Linux without ever installing it on your system. Knoppix has great auto-hardware detection and is good to have around if Windows suddenly won't boot one day (seems to happen a lot. :roll: ).
