Time to take to my own hands.

Namori's Yuruyuri seinen yuri series is getting an anime TV adaptation. This is the FIRST title to ever get adapted from Ichijinsha's Comic Yuri Hime S (http://ichijinsha.co.jp/yurihime_s/) line so let's hope to GOD this paves through more titles getting adapted from that and Yuri Hime's line.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-01-18/yuruyuri-yuri-manga-gets-tv-anime-reportedly-green-lit

There are 2 volumes so far, and it's still ongoing:

http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/6718/img75807055.jpg (http://img696.imageshack.us/i/img75807055.jpg/)http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/7931/img75807070.jpg (http://img696.imageshack.us/i/img75807070.jpg/)

Here's the synopsis from ANN:
Four fun-loving schoolgirls take over the former room of a tea ceremony club for their own "Gorakubu" (amusement club).

I actually got a glimpse of this and this is seriously along the lines of your cutesy bishoujo moe slice-of-life series like Hidamari Sketch, Ichigo Mashimaro, or even K-ON! which some people criticized why this is even in Yuri Hime S if the yuri is really all subtext and not go anywhere. Hopefully the anime production companies might take some liberties with it and make it even MORE yuri.

I'll be looking forward for this :)

I always expected that an anime adaptation of a seinen yuri manga from the male oriented Comic Yuri Hime S (http://www.comipedia.com/magazine/comic-yurihime-s) to come first than an anime adaptation of a manga from Comic Yuri Hime (http://www.comipedia.com/magazine/comic-yurihime).

Think about it, what do you think will get adapted first... a seinen yuri manga that contains moe elements from the male oriented Comic Yuri Hime S (http://www.comipedia.com/magazine/comic-yurihime-s) magazine, or a yuri manga with more "shoujo likeness" from Comic Yuri Hime (http://www.comipedia.com/magazine/comic-yurihime) magazine. well, of course seinen moe otaku aimed yuri manga will get adapted first...

I was expecting you to make this thread after seeing your name in ANN, darkchibi :D

Even if this isn't actual yuri, having an Ichijinsha's manga being adapted to anime is very good news. Will be watching this.

Ichijinsha's webpage for the manga can be found here:

So going from the character profiles, the blond girl's name is Kyoko Toshinou

Eh...kindaaa. For me, underage yuri is a little....squicky, same with underage yaoi. I'm more comfortable when they're at least teenagers....:heh:

If it's only subtext though, I guess I can deal with it....:eyespin:

From what I've read of the Manga so far, the yuri/shōjo-ai content is fairly understated; light content, really, from the "Yuri Himi/S" line. I'm hoping it goes well, partially because it's actually a nice series, and partially because I'd really like to see some other series from Yuri Himi animated (anything by Fujieda Miyabi, in fact).

I'd go with the shoujo-like yuri myself. At least those works have actual yuri content, unlike this one which is just a bunch of lolis going moe moe.

Of course, the current Japanese anime fans are the moe otaku crowd, so it's quite understandable why they chose this series. It's all about the moe; the yuri doesn't really matter (not that it has any though).

Its called Strawberry Panic, has quite high rating on anidb and i liked it, despite the fact it was pretty much a parody on shoujo-ai. The amount of good fanfiction avaiable is also remarkable.

But in the end it wasnt moe enough i guess :uhoh:

The one thing I have not come across is the existence of yuri series that plays out like your shounen/seinen harem romance titles whether it has ecchi tropes or not. Like a yuri title starring a main female lead who becomes a beacon of infatuation by other girls consisting of your usual bishoujo archetypes (you can have your mystical magical girlfriend plot if you want). Throw in some ecchi comedy and then later some drama that lead to a definitive romance, and you got yourself a premise I seriously doubt the Japanese haven't used as much as before.

Revenger1589

then later some drama that lead to a definitive romance

This is becoming ridiculously scarce in het harems, expecting it in a yuri harem is a little far fetched. Ambiguity is what sells, by leaving it open ended you keep everyone happy as they can imagine their favorite girl won.

Also, these shows tend to play romance as something secondary, leaving it as subtext for the most part. Pure and innocent girls with the sexual maturity of a 9 year old are preferred here.

It's called Puni Plush (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PuniPlush). Everyone looks twelve even if they're thirty.

If it is yuri then I am game XD

It's not yuri if there's no yuri in it. Weak Class-S subtext =/= yuri.

Girls kissing/cuddling/having sex = yuri.

Dagger
2010-01-21, 13:11
There is kissing, cuddling, girl-girl crushes (and no male characters). The only thing Yuru Yuri lacks are actual relationships with development or any serious scenes that last more than half a page, although one could of course argue that many other series touted as yuri lack the same thing. There's a lot of gleeful fodder for yuri fans, but the best part, and the true source of its popularity, is probably the self-referential comedy. Kyouko (the blonde girl) steals every scene she's in--she's a character much like Miu from Ichigo Marshmallow.

....Kyouko (the blonde girl) steals every scene she's in--she's a character much like Miu from Ichigo Marshmallow.

Actually, "Ichigo Marshmallow" is a good comparison for the entire series. It's really just a fun, relaxing series. The shojo-ai subtext really is just to add to the overall cuteness of the characters.

You'd be surprise at the amount of loli yuri.

It gets worse from there.

2 10 year olds kissing seems normal now after what I've unfortunately seen.

Can't provide you with pics though due to massive deletion blitz.

The shojo-ai subtext really is just to add to the overall cuteness of the characters.
Wait what? There was subtext in this series?

So it wasn't just innocent girls playing and there was actual intention to that picture of (I think) Chika and Miu dressed up as a bride and groom in that one manga I was browsing through?

Honestly, l don't like Yuri.... you may call it as bias just because l'm a male... The only interest about yuri type anime is when they are hentai....

Sorry, but l just don't get point that why do they focus of making lesbian relationships in TV were kids and kids at heart are watching.... and another that l usually notice.... why doesn't it include even a male minor character.... though there are some yuri that has them....

I think in my opinion, adding just a single male character in a yuri theme anime, will make a huge impact in the progress of that anime....

Two beautiful girls kissing is only appreciated in a society without social morality i respect to sex bounderies.....

As what i understand, 11 months ago, the manga was rejected because it was not "yuri" enough. Then the mangaka just insert lots of yuri-subtext in to live up with the tittle, even make a spin off tittle (Yuri Yuri) that actually on yuri couples. And thank to that, now we have the anime!!

I actually won't expect much until i watched the 1st chapter of course. Not only because it could be fake news, but the adaptation may turn out not as good as expected

Well comparing Yuru Yuri to K-on is a bit under statement. I means K-on even cut out the chapter when Mio becomes upset thinking that Ritsu have boyfriend. And totally ruined the feel behind Ritsu x Mugi date

It's all subtext and fan teasing of course. But if they are faithful with adapatation, there will be plenty of good echi yuri fan service in Yuru Yuri :heh:

The shoujo-ai level if they can be faithful with the manga is quite high by itself (in anime standard). If the director plan to spice it up a bit more, then... surely... i can't wait for it...

PS: on the topic of yuri manga, i think "Girl Friends" are easiest and best choice for anime adaption since it has long content, and one of the best with character developments, side story and sorts. However if i can choose, i will like the anime adaption of Hitomi& Nana short series (also from Morigana Milk), and "Ebisu-san and Hoteru-san". The later one sit on the top of my list

Otsu Hiyori's story is mostly fluffy among the two main characters at least with happy ending... but i always found them too short for character development and the ending is just a bit weak.... Aqua Blue Cinema, Maple Love and Love Letter are probably the only high-note

We need more yuri with angst, with sudden development. Something that slap audience like how the end of each volume of Girls Friends did.

PS: We are discussing anything related to yuri in a anime thread which has little actual yuri in it. Isn't it a bit contradiction? :p

i don't think the same. Otsu Hiyori, so far is the best one to pull a good character development through a single shot IMO. I never felt the weakness in her endings actually. Compared to Morinaga, some of her oneshots had me cringing for some reason. I think because they're kinda cheesy.

AS for GF, there were times i kinda feel the drama was a bit exaggerated. But nevertheless, I like how things between them progressed. =) that's only my opinion though.

Morigana Milk is quite weak on one-shot to say the true. I only count Girl Friends and the series of Hitomi x Nana. The rest does not exist for me....

Weak might not be the right word, but basically Otsu Hiyori's works lacked some dramatic event, some character turmoil, angst before the characters turned to a new light (*coughyurcough*) which is quite realistic in the real life, but not dramatic enough for standard yuri manga... But then you found the drama in GF was exaggerated so it's all matter of tastes, i guess

I think it's a wonderful piece of work. The story is told from one person's perspective, so we could see her emotion and feeling are slowly changing as time pass. I love the atmosphere of the story, with how she's struggling about her feeling.

A bit off-topic, aside from Morigana, is there any noteworthy yuri mangaka out there? I'm not new in this regard, but I'm not old enough to be sure I've known every name, so any recommendation? :p

A bit off-topic, aside from Morigana, is there any noteworthy yuri mangaka out there? I'm not new in this regard, but I'm not old enough to be sure I've known every name, so any recommendation? :p
*Cough*AokiUme*cough*
She does some really short one-short through, mostly sweet and fluffy.

But if you already in the genre then you probably know every notable mangaka. If i have to anme another, i will say Yoshitomi Akihito (you knows "Blue Drop"). The only non-yuri that mangaka did: "Mermaid" really scarred my sanity, so i hope he (or she) will just her keep up with yuri

PS: Oh... found Kurogane. I actually couldn't borther to check out who he is. But was thinking of how nice those non-h managa that mangaka who drew SHoujo Sect did, and maybe i should recommend it to Duo Maxwell. So yeah Kenn Kurogane and that series called "Hoshikawa Ginza District 4'. Also Shisei Kuromasa has really nice art also

K-On! with yuri.

Well this sure ain't Strawberry Shake Sweet, but the droughts for this romantic sub-genre are so long that I'll take whatever I can get. In fact, anything with yuri is sure-fire enough to get me watching weekly again.

The thing is, how does one discuss a show made of nothing but fluff?:heh:

The gags in the manga are actually quite funny and devious. That's where Yuru Yuri shines. I hope the anime keeps the manga's spirit of self-parody intact. The character designs are cute and all, but I wouldn't lump it in with moeblob stuff. It lures you in with the promise of fluff and then busts out a ton of oddball gags and self-deprecating comedy. The humor is self-aware enough that it doesn't make you feel like you're losing brain cells. (At least not in my case, haha.)

Full length version of OP: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2011-06-12/daily-video/yuruyuri-song-performed-in-character

The official Twitter account for the Yuruyuri anime announced that the music video for the anime's opening theme song "Yuriyurarararayuruyuri Daijiken" began streaming on the Nico Nico Douga website on Sunday. Shiori Mikami, Yuka Ōtsubo, Minami Tsuda, and Rumi Ookubo — the four main voice actresses of the anime — appear in the music video in character, complete with the school uniforms from Namori's original manga.

I will say Kyouko is closer to Miu than Ana, but she's not quite either

Don't know much on Crunchyroll to say the truth, except:
a) the membership allow you to watch the episode almost when it airs, otherwise you have to wait a week or two
b) some anime is not available to you due to your country of resident, no matter what

So it has finally begun, my most anticipated summer 2011 series. I've read the manga and I must say that I highly enjoyed the parodies, self-irony and breaking-the-fourth-wall jokes.

First Impressions

Content: Episode 01 basically covered chapters 01-04, if not more. It skips around a bit (e.g. chapter 17 was also animated) and progresses rather fast - a trifle too fast for my liking. I was very surprised that they already introduced the "Akari's lack of presence"-gag in episode 01 because usually, you'd let the audience become acquainted with the characters first and then slowly "remove" Akari's presence from the episodes without the audience noticing. That's the whole point of the -in my opinion- brillant joke after all. Unfortunately its effect was weakened because it was immediately given away in the first episode...the animators probably had their reasons. They certainly aren't in a rush, 51 chapters have been published so far and if they cover 4 chapters per episode, they should have enough time to cover all the material with 12 episodes.

Seiyuu/Sound: The main cast is voiced by rookies which isn't necessarily a bad thing. However the seiyuus seem to lack energy or that certain something which made Lucky Star and K-On! so enjoyable. I'm thinking about Katou Emiri (Kagami) or Toyosaki Aki (Yui) who are almost godesses compared to the strangely reserved performance of Ootsubo Yuka (Kyoko). On the other hand, this is her debut after all and she's only 18, so hopefully she'll improve as the series progresses - she has to, since Kyoko is THE show magnet. People always remember the crazy/energetic character, voicing a character like Kyoko could be a seiyuu's breakthrough. Right now Kyoko's voice doesn't quite match her personality, but that's just me being nitpicky. Apart from Kyoko, I also thought that Yui sounded a little weak. Perhaps it's because of her role as deadpan snarker, I'll have to wait for a couple more episodes. Seiyuu-wise, I thought Akari had the best performance which is ironic, considering the fact that she's the one slowly "fading into the background" xD

Next Episode: The second episode is going to be great with Toyosaki Aki as yuri-fangirl Chitose and Katou Emiri as tsundere Sakurako. I'm especially looking forward to the fights between the tsundere couple Sakurako and Himawari xD

In any case I'm sure that Yuru Yuri will quickly become one of my favorite moe shows. I enjoyed the manga more than the K-On! anime, its humor is not inferior to other moe shows and its big plus is the yuri (sub-)text :D

However, it is the following anime to Sengoku Otome, so surely...! Surely...! It will get a lot better as it goes on.
...Maybe.
(The first "Akarin~" almost sounded like "Akerin~"...)

I liked the character designs though.

The OP and ED were a bit... too chaotic. The OP was still okay, but the ED just made me

The voices of the protagonist's friends is a bit Bou-hime... But hey, better than listening to Hanazawa or whatever using the same voice for the nth time.
Oh wait... Toyosaki (or whatever Keion's Yui's voice actor's name was)...

Yuruyuri 01 - L Channel

I can't tell if this or Morita will fill in the niche A Channel left behind, but any show that has "Yuri" in the name can't be such a bad thing. A cast full of newbies is pretty interesting too, though I recognize at least one of them from another place. (Rumi Ookubo, Chinatsu, is the voice of Ako in Suite Precure)

Akari almost had a complete character arc in half an episode there. I'm curious as to what her idea for making herself stand out was. Her introduction in class was a good start, but not quite there. I like Kyoko already. Her not-very-subtextual-at-all affections are sweet, and her head is clearly in the clouds. Perfect.

Watched the first episode of this, and the jury is still out for me. I haven't decided wether I'll follow it or wait until it goes completed.

I was pretty scared for a while here when I saw the ultra cliché beginning of the episode, with the klutz of protagonist late running late for school, toast in mouth and everything. Thankfully, I quickly realized it was a parody. The parody of the parody we got later on was even better.

Overall, a highly enjoyable episode. I have a question though: will this just be an anime about cute girls doing cute things, with yuri being used as a comedic device or is there going to be some actual yuri? I just want to know what to expect. Yuri would be definite plus, but I don't mind if there isn't any as long as the show remains fun.

I like how they immediately addressed and made fun of Akari's lack of presence, which I was already starting to feel in this episode. She's a little bland compared to the other characters, especially the hyper energetic Kyouko. Favorite character so far is Kyouko, although Yui is a close second. Ironically, in the manga...

The Akari-obsessed older sister is an obsessed older brother. Who never actually shows up on-stage at all.

Cute show, thus far. I might have left the start of the running gag about Akari's weakness as the main character for episode 2, but they kind of needed to maintain continuity with the main four characters before dragging in the rest of the cast. Not a lot of loud guffaws, but some snickers. Yui's mule-kick when Kyouko tried to look up her skirt was an especially good bit, as was "Invisible Boob-Missile Akarin"!

Midonin
2011-07-05, 21:52
Okay, I did my research. Apparently the change in gender happened in the original manga too. Akari originally had an older brother, but in Volume 6 of the manga, it was revealed that she actually has an older sister. So the anime's actually bringing itself in line with the source.

Now I've done a characters/seiyuus page (http://hashihime.x10.bz/etc/2011/yuruyuri/charsei.html). More because the four stars are pretty new, than because they're particularly good. Still deciding. But I like having faces and backgrounds for them. A group of more experienced seiyuus just arrived at the end there, as the student council (includes Toyosaki Aki and Katou Emiri).

Thanks for posting that other chart, tezu. It looks self-explanatory, to me, since most of the info consists of different sizes of hearts, lol. It was on another tab on the same page of the official site, as Midonin says.

There are at least three unrequited crushes (Kyouko interest on Chinatsu does not count). Not outright love, but Class S at least. And there are some suggestive yuri fan services through yuri googles

The student council's a pretty interesting bunch in themselves. As just-barely-hiding-it-subtextual with each other as the main four, but with slightly more famous voice actors. Chitose's fantasies are great, and the casual "rival" relationship between Ayano and Kyoko should be fun to see in the episodes to come. The highlight of this episode was probably the impromptu game of breasketball - only Airi has the potential to play that game besides Himawari.

And Chinatsu and Yui's eyecatches did indeed have different instrumental arrangements. Good work.

Okay, first question: Where is our dear heroine and main character, Akari? xD The poor girl got close to zero attention, but I guess the main focus was on the student council characters this time.

Impressions:
- I absolutely adored Himawari and Sakurako, so much tsundereness isn't good for them xD
- Chitose is a martyr of yuriness (so much blood-loss!). Thanks to her delusions we don't even need to apply our own goggles anymore
- didn't like Himawari's fanservice scenes that much, it was inevitable since she really is well-endowed, but somehow it seemed less..."blatant" in the manga (she's only thirteen, is this even normal?)
- the student council seiyuus are great; seiyuu-wise I was disappointed by the last episode but this episode was really nice for the ears

Episode 2 was full of surprises. First, we learn Kyouko is actually very smart; and then Chitose is revealed to be a yuri pervert on Kanako's level, just less annoying. I'm a fan of her yuri vision already. Unlike us peasants, she doesn't need yuri goggles to see yuri everywhere, quite the contrary in fact, she needs to use special goggles to suppress her yuri power level. Amazing.

Sakurako and Himawari were pretty fun. Those two are so tsunderes for each other. Just f***k already!

- didn't like Himawari's fanservice scenes that much, it was inevitable since she really is well-endowed, but somehow it seemed less..."blatant" in the manga (she's only thirteen, is this even normal?)

I wouldn't say it's very common, but it's very possible. One of the girl in my class when I was 13-14 was pretty damn stacked already. I wish breastketball had been part of the P.E program. Now that's my kind of sport!

Is this anime just going to get weirder every episodeSounds like a good plan, lol.

I'm not sure I can heap praise on this show, but I enjoyed ep2 quite a bit, more than ep1. It doesn't feel that yuri to me, but it's certainly fun. And maybe the yuri will become more meaningful as we proceed.

The seiyuus for the student council were good enough that I started to find the other seiyuus pretty good, too. Not sure if it's their voices or my ears, but something got better.

Check out my characters/seiyuus page (http://hashihime.x10.bz/etc/2011/yuruyuri/charsei.html) to see who plays whom. Toyosaki Aki was good as the bespectacled enthusiast. I really liked Fujita Saki (Mahiru in Working) as Ayano. And even young Ootsubo Yuka (Kyouko) pleased me this week.

I think producers may have got the mistaken idea they can throw just any recent graduate of a seiyuu school into the fray, but these particular newbies may actually have something going for them. I was just looking at an old post (http://hashihime.blogspot.com/2009/04/k-on-who-are-those-great-voices.html) of mine in which I was shocked by how good the rag-tag band of newcomers in the first episode of K-On were....

Very little actual yuri in the chapters of the running manga series I've seen thus far (although there's some in its sister series, Yuriyuri). Actually, it's just about the least yuri series in Yuri Hime. So barring a sudden shocking plot twist, I'm just going to sit back and enjoy the gags. Especially when, as in ep. 2, they were actually funny (um, except the breast-dribbling...that was just uncomfortable).

i had no problems getting hooked on this since ep1. its one of those mostly random slice of life series. loved the series Lucky Star, Minami-Ke and Working and this is close enough to to it. i find that PPD was weirder than this series so far but PPD was still rather funny.

Who doesn't like a good slap on the breasts once in a while?

Man, that OP is infectious. Ayano does sound like Mahiru. Now I can't unhear hurgh. Good casting. The gags in #2 still can't beat boob missiles. That cracked me up. And now we find out Kyoko is actually an idiot savant. Brilliant! Imagination, intellect and mischief. The world is at Kyoko's feet! And by world I mean the doujin world.

Completely charmed by the second episode. First was a bit slow but they needed to introduce the cast properly so wasn't a big deal.
Loved the tsundere (to be) couple. Sakurako's obliviousness to Himawari's occasional kindness (and her true motives) will make for a lot of funny moments! Poor Himawari~

I'd say it's the latter. A character can't make an impact without exposure, but even an insignificant cast member can leave a strong impression if played right. Or it's a vicious-cycle. But regardless, Kyoko and co. were pretty much on the mark about her being forgettable or something to that effect, which is a big fictional no-no, especially for someone who's clearly meant to be a main character. Nobody get me wrong, though; my viewpoint toward this show will likely remain favorable, but this is going to sit at the back of my mind each week. Isn't it sad, Akari?

Glad the shows were not shy with yuri moments. Have to give credits to Chitose though,as i can't stop smiling during her imagination. Kyouko and Ayano are surely great material for her to harvest (if only she can survive during the process). The interactions between the tsunderes (Tsundere Vortex?) are great. However poor Himawari..... she falls to that idiot Sakurako, who was so dense at such blatant acts of affection. Sakurako probably will just wash the shirt right away when she get home, too.

Yui, Chinatsu didn't have much screen time this episode. But i guess they (especially Yui) gonna be the center of the show based on next episode review

Well it's true that the series has no emotional depth so a lot of (dedicated) yuri fans dislike it because it's not a story about girls falling in love with each other, but a series that seems to use the idea for laughs. However, I think the humour of Yuru Yuri is one of a kind. I'm following the manga and I really liked the sometimes subtle humour. I'm not talking about Chitose's fanatasies, but for instance, all those self-ironic jokes about main characters, character archetypes, manga colour pages or frontispieces. Or for instance, the fact that Akari vanishes from the spine of volume 5 whereas she was still shown crying on the spine of volume 4, or the fact that her face is covered by Chinatsu's hair/letters on several covers/promotional posters. Those little things AND the fact that the yuri flavour of the series is very strong are what set the manga Yuru Yuri apart from the other SoL moe comedies for me which is why I enjoy the manga a little more than the TV series because some of the manga jokes just can't be adapted into TV-format.

Yuruyuri 03 - Pursue the Ladder!

The concept of Yui's apartment can be used for an entire episode, apparently. And it was a good episode. The continuing Yui/Kyoko/Chinatsu triangle escalated to an ever-escalating height. Most of it on Kyoko's end. From her fantasy with Yui (all a lie) to attempting to bathe (all true), she continues to be a great standout character. But Kyoko could've found something in Yui's apartment if she searched hard enough. There was one drawer she didn't open, likely containing the unmentionables, and that ladder kept hovering in my field of view the entire time. I don't know what's up it, but there's gotta be something.

Akari has been displaced by the UFO in the background.

tezu
2011-07-18, 13:20
LOL at Akari's main character monologue at the beginning...she was literally shoved to the background by her seat neighbours xD

I noticed that this episode added a few minor original sequences to the story which were not included in the manga (e.g. Chinatsu spilling orange juice or Yui and Kyoko's conversation in bed). I'm usually not pleased when the anime adaption is different from the manga, but this episode really surprised me and actually made sense because it filled in the gaps perfectly (the manga chapter in question was super-short and there was no explanation about what happened after the kouhais left) and added some (yes, who'd have thought that) emotional depth to Yui and Kyoko's relationship.

All in all ep3 was rather slow-paced compared to the previous episode, it wasn't a gag-firework (I suppose it's because the student council wasn't involved) but it made me smile quite a few times (especially the YuixKyoko scenes were sort of "aww"-inducing; childhood friends are the best)

Memorable scenes:
- Akari's lack of presence
- Kyoko ringing the bell
- Kyoko sharing ramen with Yui
- Kyoko and Yui's conversation
- Kyoko bragging about borrowing stuff from Yui in front of Chinatsu-chan

Also, obligatory beach episode coming up next. I sense some Himawari fanservice again :/

P.S.: Would someone mind making an animated gif out of that scene where Kyoko rings the bell and when Yui sort of pulls her inside?

During the episode, I was like "How the heck are Kyoko and Yui still friends?" when you could see Yui being visibly (and sometimes physically) annoyed every time Kyoko did one of her pranks. Then at the end I was like "D'awwwww BFF." I think we can add another tsundere to the list! Also, I think some of the music came directly from Minami-ke. SRSLY it's like I'm watching Chiaki, Touma and Uchida in their middle school years... if Chiaki ever were to turn into a bundle of joy and a flirt that just won't quit.

Definitely not bad! They should have named the episode "Kyouko makes the audience laugh repeatedly" because that's pretty much what happened, right from her writing Akari's name on her hand so she wouldn't forget our presence-less alleged protagonist (though seriously, if you add the attack hair to the ep. 1 boob missiles, Akarin could become a super-powered menace! I can just see the inhabitants of Tokyo looking around and wondering what it was that had just devastated their city, but not being able to remember...).

I'm glad we have a Yui-centric-ish episode. Yui is my favorite character. Also, the eyecatch with her hugging the pillow is just too cute.

I think we can add another tsundere to the list!
To be honest, I don't think Yui is a tsundere. She is more like the tsukkomi to Kyoko's boke. Tsunderes are antagonistic towards a certain person because they stubbornly deny that they actually like them and Yui never does that. She buys rum raisin for Kyoko, cooks ramen for her without ever saying "I-it's not like I m-made it for you or anything, baka..." She's just very reserved and mature for her age and only becomes violent to keep her crazy friend in check - different from Ayano (who's plainly dishonest with herself), Himawari and Sakurako (the tsundere prototypes). And I think that having grown up together, Kyoko and Yui already know what the other one means/thinks, so when Yui said "Kyoko you're hopeless", Kyoko answered with "Thank you".

On a sidenote, I think Kagamin from Lucky Star sort of combines Ayano's and Yui's features (tsukkomi + tsundere).

Yui is definitely not a tsundere alright. Her relationship with Kyoko is a pretty realistic depiction of relationship between close childhood friends that have remained friends into teenhood ._. That is not to say there is no romantic element in their relationship but that it is a mature and long standing one. I'd say they are like a long time married couple instead :heh:

I misses the actual tsunderes but this episode was really good so no complaints :s

I laughed so damn hard when Kyouko wrote Akari's name on her hand. I really love that running gag.

I have to admit that part had me laughing pretty hard too :heh:.

Also the pictures/flashbacks of the three of them when they were smaller was too adorable for words, especially Kyouko/Yui ones . Their bed talk was really nice too :).

Also... since no one mentioned this yet... anyone else gets the vibe Chinatsu has a darker side to her after the kitchen scene? :twitch::uhoh:

Yep, Chinatsu is actually pretty much the opposite of Mirakurun, the magical girl who fights for justice. She's usually all sweet and innocent in front of Yui but actually has a secret bully side - which only Akari gets to see (already foreshadowed in ep01 when Chinatsu asks Akari to enter the clubroom first only to be tackled by Kyoko) xD I bet she likes the fact that Kyoko "harrasses" her because then she can let Yui protect her although she should be able to fend her off alone :P

Excellent 3rd episode. Love Yui and Kyouko interactions.
I was starting to feel a bit of pity toward Kyouko because she is trying so hard and so unsubtly to get Chinatsu's attention she can only fail at it. But then I realized Chinatsu wasn't all that important since Yui was there and is obviously a way better match for her.

The exchange when they play that RPG was a good metaphor for how they deal with things *coflovecof*. Kyouko is the rushing kind who doesn't fear to be rejected, but Yui needs time, to be sure where she goes... Message is quite clear to me : fans will have to be really patient if they want to see those two together someday~

Funny, my personality is closer to Yui's but when it comes to RPG, I have the same playing style as Kyouko. I hate wasting time leveling up to remove challenge from the game.

Poor Akari, she needs a break. ;-;

That intro monologue where her face gets obscured or hidden (even by a sakura petal!) was funny and sad at the same time. I would like to refer to her as the silent hero in this series-- always there but making no significant presence.

Honestly, though, Kyouko really does make this series. Her antics in the last episode was both hilarious and funny, as well cute.

Also, I had flashbacks to Azumanga Daioh when I saw Akarin's hair "bobs" take a life of their own. Who remembers something similar in Azumanga? XD

I'm torn between the vice president and Yui for Kyouko, though.
Same, now i am torn between Yui x Kyouko and Ayano x Kyouko also...It's easy to pick Ayano over Yui if I only based on the manga. But then episode 3 really showed a different side of Yui and Kyouko. Hilarious on how Chinatsu already can sense this bond and becomes jealous. Also, if their playing style hint at how they deal with the relationship, then I hope Yui can soon gather her strength high enough to charge on Kyouko

It seems that Akarin is increasingly known for her lack of presence among fans :heh:

PS: In the anime, Kyouko's fake flashback on her and Yui's past seems to hint at a kiss. But the manga was a little bit more NSFW (or for broadcasted) as Kyouko's fantasy showed Yui was (or seemed )groping her in various places

I hope they're gonna animate that chapter/special in which Chinatsu tears Kyoko's YuixKyoko doujin apart xD Dark Chinatsu is much more interesting than fawning, starry-eyed Chinatsu. For some reason, I've always shipped KyokoxYui, it's always been clear that they share a strong bond - otherwise Yui wouldn't stay with Kyoko and live with her antics - and while the manga did show some subtle tenderness on Yui's part, Kyoko is always acting like a child begging for rum raisin or homework...On the other hand, Kyoko's always been a little "different"and so far she hasn't really shown an special interest in anyone in the manga except for Chinatsu/Mirakurun.
In any case, their relationship reminds me a little of SakurakoxHimawari just without the tsundere layer (which makes their relationship more subtle). Both pairs are childhood friends, Himawari seems to be the sensible one (Yui) and Sakurako the childish/impertinent one (Kyoko). And both Yui and Himawari show a lot of patience and tenderness when it comes to their friend although they sometimes get violent, too.

In the anime, Kyouko's fake flashback on her and Yui's past seems to hint at a kiss. But the manga was a little bit more NSFW (or for broadcasted) as Kyouko's fantasy showed Yui was (or seemed )groping her in various places

Pony Canyon has some samples of the character songs up, so I took a listen. Some observations:

-The first track on each of the core four girls' CDs works in the leitmotif from their eyecatch. Good choice.
-Yui has a pretty impressive singing voice.
-I'm drawn to Kyoko's songs, and characters like her usually do get the high-energy rock-style songs.
-The backgrounds of the CDs have one of the hiragana for ゆるゆり in the background.
-Akari's first track is titled "I'm the Star, Akaza Akari". Even in music, she's struggling to assert her role in a universe turned against her.

As expected, the beach episode turned out to be a pure fanservice episode with lots of anime-only fantasy scenes for Chitose (the anime version seems to be enhancing the yuriness) and less screentime for Akarin. I am a little disappointed that Himawari and Sakurako didn't get more screentime but were more or less bickering in the background (I definitely need more tsun/tsun!).

Since I'm not a big fan of swimsuits and beaches, I didn't enjoy the beach episode as much as episode 2, although they examined similar aspects (Ayano's crush and Chitose's fantasies). Anyway, my favorite scenes were when Ayano cycled against a pole while studying and when Ayano thanked Chitose because it hinted at their strong friendship similar to the scene with Kyoko and Yui from last episode. I wonder what's coming up in the next episode?

Yuruyuri 04 - Wishes Carried On the Waves and Winds ~Wings in Waiting~

The cameraman continues to find new and creative ways to screw with Akari. And it's not just the camera's eye, either. Mother nature is getting in on the act. Though I liked seeing Akari's tanabata wish continue to flutter by throughout the episode - in a roundabout way, Akari's wish wasn't unfulfilled. Her desire to stand out stood out, even if she herself didn't.

Having Kyoko for a rival is an interesting experience. Kyoko's so happy-go-lucky she's barely aware of the rivalry, and Ayano's far too stubborn to admit it. Their interaction (and Chitose's intermittent fantasies) were fun to watch as always - it was only a matter of time before Ayano's lack of underwear came back to bite her in her clearly-exposed butt. Chinatsu's reaction to being kissed is apparently to spin around like a music box doll, and starfish have the same accuracy as shuriken.

Next week looks to be Mirakurun heavy. I can't wait!
