I hope this turns out good and that we get "good DEEN" and not "cheap DEEN", we haven't had a shinsengumi focused or even samurai series in ages (other than Champloo which isn't the same), I think the last one I saw was Peacemaker (and Kenshin). Wish it was a full 26.
I'm going to check it out since it's been so long since I've seen a series in this setting and for Ko Otani's music (according to the official site) and Atsuko Nakajima always does fantastic character designs like in Trinity Blood and You're Under Arrest.

This was intriguing, but now is a must. The official site has just posted the cast: Kuwashima Houko, Miki Shinichirou, Morikubo Showtaro, Toriumi Kousuke, Yoshino Hiroyuki, Usa Kouji, Ohkawa Tohru, et al.
I'm still not confident about the director. He is Yamasaka Osamu, who did Toward the Terra and Itazura na Kiss.
No lead writer is credited, but the story is credited to Otomate, the games-for-girls company. This appears to be their first foray into anime, as far as I can tell. There is already a Hakuouki PSP game. Here is a PV for the game (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0F0LY4O_mI).
I'm hoping for good Deen. Deen did Simoun, after all, which is basically my favorite anime. And Marimite. And Jigoku Shoujo. Of course, there is also Code-E....

Yeah and I'd also add the fantastic animation for Read or Die, and the good Kenshin OVA, and my memory of it is currently hazy but Getbackers was relatively decently animated too if I recall despite being like 52 episodes, been a while.
The two overtly cheaply-animated shows they let me down on that I always want to slap them for since they could have been more enjoyable with good animation are Samurai Deeper Kyo's rather nice art but mostly awful often non-existent actual animation and ofcourse the fun but infamously corner-cutting Rave Master.
Looks like a version of the game is getting a PS3 version in June as well.
Speaking of animation/art, the screens of the first episode in that section of the site look like at least potentially good DEEN until they show some actual animation or action.
One could argue Gintama but thats its own genre in itself :heh:
Yeah, I haven't seen a lot of it yet, but can it even be classified with just a genre or two lol.

Wow, this sure sealed the deal for me! Terra was one of the best sci-fi drama I had watched in recent years with excellent pacing and wonderful character development. Itazura na Kiss, despite having no ending in the manga was also done extremely well, especially towards the end.
I feel disappointed as well that this would be only 13 episodes but maybe due to this, there will be a lot of intense moments.

Thanks for encouraging me to have another look. Itazura disappointed me, but perhaps that was the "I've read the manga and it's not the same" effect. I did like the latter episodes better. Really, I just hated the guy until then, so it was hard for me.

Wow, yeah definitely giving this series a chance this spring. The premise alone had me intrigued. The character designs look great too. But top it off with Ohkawa Toru and Kuwashima Houko? I'm sold. DEEN, do not screw up my Shinsengumi.
Count me in for this too.I have played the game and it was fun. I don't really care if the anime will have a plot or not, I'm just gonna watch it for the fanservice anyway :heh: Any info about the seiyus?

I'm hopeful this one will turn out well. It doesn't have to be amazing, just not stupid, with very cool period animation. The artwork for this shows great potential, but Deeper Kyo was a huge let-down.

Interesting. Although it really only shows character designs. There was one nice shot of a tower behind falling snow(?) in the moonlight. The brief sword fighting scene was handled kind of abstractly, but that was probably because it was merely promo material showing two opposing characters instead of a real fight.

That's true, it's hard to tell.
I just find it so ironic that this has the same character designer as the Peacemaker Kurogane anime....
Ah Peacemaker Kurogane, one of the greatest shinsengumi anime ever made. Though the manga is currently on hitaus.

I love the OP and ED songs.
I'm really surprised that Studio Deen did a very good job in the first episode (and it seems like they are going to keep it that way in episode 2).

I just finished watching it myself. No mayonaise or gorillas to be found amongst this Shinsengumi. With the exception of the opening minutes, the epi was fairly quiet.
Enjoyed the BGM and atmosphere. Thank goodness there weren't any sparklies going around ... just snowflakes.
As a big bonus - the heroine is very likeable ... hooray.

A shame they're a bunch of really dense bishie samurais who took over 12 minutes to realize that she was, in fact, a woman.
I thought this particular bit was extremely hilarious and I really don't know how you can mistake such a girl for a male kid.
Wanted to watch it yesterday itself but guess will wait for a translated version . If last season Durarara was the show to watch out for this season its Hakuouki .

I never played the game and had stumbled on this anime by accident. It just happened that main heroine is voiced by Kuwashima Houko, who had voiced the biggestpart of my favourite characters :heh:
But male character designs had won me over immediately! :D
Saw the episode just now, animetion graphics are great!
Since I don't speak japanese, I can't understand what is going on so it seemed a bit boring since it was mostly talking.
But with subs I'm sure it'll be better^^
And after all talking is done, I excpect good action!
Atleast OP does have me interested in upcoming things :p
And yay! It is the first anime that I will be starting with everyone from episode 1 :heh:

1st episodes are always mostly talk. Stuff gets better later on.
And abput story, almost each show has same main story. It more depends on the details in between.

Enjoyed it. This first episode was definitely the "good" Studio DEEN. I loved the setting. It didn't seem stale at all to me, but artistic and atmospheric. Loved to see Kyoto: the Yasaka pagoda, Higashiyama in the background, etc. I thought the winter scenes were particularly atmospheric.A pure set-up episode, with a bit of good action at the beginning, then lots of bishounen and talk to get us oriented. The way so much male chest was visible despite the cold was amusing.
Kuwashima Houko can do this character very well. Watch as she gains confidence and becomes indispensable to the tribe, lol. Just identify with her, no matter what your gender, and go along for the ride. We will discover as we go along whether the story and characters will sustain our interest.
I really thought the backgrounds in the indoor scenes were well done. I felt as if I were there, in those small rooms, surrounded by those guys. Storyboard by the director, Yamasaki Osamu (Itazura na Kiss, Toward the Terra). I liked the singing in both the OP and ED: by Yoshioka Aika (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=87051) and by mao (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=73962).

I just watched the first episode. I liked the OP and ED a lot, and the animation/art was crisp and very pretty. Not bad for my first Shoujo... I'm looking forward to the next episode, because as we all know the first's all just introductions... Yup, Hakuouki's staying on my watchlist :)

I mean.
Deen really surprised me here. The art looks great and the colors they chose really fit the atmosphere. Can't say much about animation since the majority of this episode didn't need any, but overall very pleasing visually.
Won't comment on plot yet since I'll need (real) subs for that. It took a bit of effort for the talking heads to keep my attention, but that's mainly the lack of subs fault. I'll trust that the story will move past the talking and into action/romance/etc soon. Will keep watching~

I just ran across a second set of trollsubs for this title. Some people are seriously laying the hate on. On the plus side, I've seen the opening scene about 10 times now, and quite like it. :checks watch: I guess there's no chance of getting a legit sub today after all. :(

Haha, the joke subs were pretty funny -- plus it helps to learn the language when you have to really concentrate on what they are saying.
Beautiful art, though the moving mouths screams not high enough budget. It seems like almost every anime with good looking guys made for girls are cursed with moving mouths and slow action sequences, though this one is comparatively a lot better than a lot of others.
Really excited to see the real subs come out after the end of Kimi. Do we have more than one group doing this one?

Watched the episode again (with Chinese sub). Enjoyed it even more.
Not really knowing much (except the name, really) about the Shinsengumi, I looked it up in Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinsengumi) -- and found that the characters in the show are at least partly based on real people. Click through on the names in the list there for a few actual photos -- Kondou, Hijikata, etc. This site (http://shinsengumi-no-makoto.net/) has even more info about each of them.

Yeah, personally my initial thoughts were that it was a boy that was a trap. You know, a boy that looked like a girl and acted like one. But then it turned out to ber a girl (badly) disguised as a boy. Thank goodness... I don't think I could have taken it if it were a boy.
This is funny... is it a reverse harem? In any case, pretty boys abound... I detect yaoi fanart being drawn as we speak. :heh:

I was expecting some shojo nonsense but this is really really good.

Well - same character designer as the definitive BL Shinsengumi series, Peacemaker Kurogane...
Finally watched the subbed version it was funny to see see Kondo Hijikata and Okita in serious roles . I was expecting Kondo to jump up and do something silly thanx to Gntama . Also Kondo's advisor the same person, Kamotaro Itou (http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/9562/2008112185049118.jpg) ? . Mannerism and Character are very similar to Gintama counterpart ,

Haha, I knew I wouldn't be the only one thinking about Gintama while watching this. Their personnalities did seem similar to their Gintama counterpart, especially Kondo and Toshi. Kind of wish they had the same people voice them. And nope, the guy with glasses is Sannan Keisuke, also known as Yamanami Keisuke (http://wiki.samurai-archives.com/index.php?title=Yamanami_Keisuke). I also thought it was pretty obvious Chizuru was a girl, but then again I also thought Heisuke was a girl (kunoichi in a hentai, good one :heh:) when I saw him in the opening so I can't blame the Shinsengumi for being suspicious of her gender, living with a trap for so long has probably made them paranoid :heh:
I enjoyed the first episode, but that zombie thing left me with a bad aftertaste.

Wow - that surprised me. Really good dialogue, pretty solid animation quality, generally outstanding. Not much action, which is fine - I prefer my swordplay slower-paced and character driven anyway, the combat has more impact that way.
I'm always interested to see these historical Shinsengumi figures turn up in anime after manga after anime after manga, and always acting so differently. They're like easels for Japanese writers to project their own ideas about the Meiji era.

By the way, further to what Guardian Enzo said about the action, I thought the initial action was pretty effective, slight as it was. The sound and blood splash on the wall really worked for me.

Very nice analogy.
I like it so far as well-- but hope to see a more non-linear plot as we go along. Girl looking for dad, who turns out to have connections to these zombies, who are being hunted by a group of very good looking men -- hopefully we'll get something new and different thrown in. But the tone and the pacing and the mood is working.
Love the OP and ED to DEATH -- but the background tracks -- not so much. Hope to have better drawn mouths in the future, haha.

In addition to those good points, they really weren't trying to figure out she was a girl. Some of them were apparently told she was a girl, and accepted it at face value. It seems two of them knew she was a girl all along, they just didn't mention it to the others. Again, not that it matters much.

Speaking of Tobita Nobuo, for all this time, I was conviced that he was the one playing the main characters (well, most of them) in Aoi Bungaku when it was , in fact, a completely different actor (Sakai Masato). That was because the voice Sakai Masato used in No longer human sounded a lot like Tobita's "creepy" voice, that he's kind of using for Sannan in Hakuouki. I feel kinda dumb for noticing this months later...

There's some definite pedigree in common here with both RK and Peacemaker - key animation, character design, etc - so none of this is really surprising. Sannan is interesting in that he was a big teddy bear in Peacemaker, and here he's sort of a hottie. Saitou, of course, is always a crowd-pleaser no matter how he's portrayed (and the Wolf of Mibu always manages to show up in these things).
Just watched the episode and oh my my the eyecandy!! and that was fairly better than what I expected it to be, this being helmed by lol!Deen and all. I'm hoping this goes more along the Saiunkoku harem route instead of that godawful angelique/la corda series with a real interesting female lead for a change. Ironically here Chizuru looks and sounds a lot like Shuurei. I hope that bodes well for the series.
On a short note, I appreciate how the guys are still suspicious of Chizuru and vice-versa. Not expecting great things form this series, but I am hoping for solid character development (and please no rushing of the romance part, if ever there will be one) at the very least.

There's a picture like that with each guy, even with Heisuke (the youngest guy) - it's an image from the Otome game. :heh: They're all going to be her love interest...if this follows anything like the game. :rolleyes: But it may not because the OP seems to focus more on Hijikata, who is the main male character. I think the three main guys are Hijikata, Okita and Saito - that's why they're the only ones shown to face off with a rival in the OP, if I recall correctly.

Rarely the main female in otome games got voiced. (Except for R-18 ones. LOLWUT logic is LOLWUT.) Same with this one-the female lead is not voiced in any ports available. But aside from that, I think it's full-voiced with the exception of monologue. My memory phails me ;A; EDIT: OKAY IF IT'S NDS I DON'T KNOW LOL. I ONLY PLAYED UP TILL PSP VERSION 8|a But 400-ish MB does give the instance that there is a lot of voiceworks there so.
And I don't know, but I always played both PC and PSP version of NL VN, and so far only PSP VNs that has the higher chance (which is 1% at best) of having the main male lead voiced (or the player's avatar if I have to say). Most, and by most I mean nearly all, bishoujo games/galge never got their main male voiced.
And I guess I must admit that other than the 5 main guys, I also have trouble remembering the names. :heh: I just remembered who Sannan is after reading the thread :F

I got all pumped up with the first scene... but then the rest of the show was all talking. Man, I was so bored; it's gonna be a struggle to keep watching this show for my mandatory 3 episode grace period.

I was hoping for more action in episode 1 but it mainly dialog. I was not bored but i was hoping for more. I didnt really have any issues with the animation but for some reason Hajikata VA irritated me im not sure why there was just something about his voice i didnt like. I guess there are going to try to introduce some type of romance into this series from the looks of the OP. I hope it does not interfere with the meat of the story. That being said it was decent start and i will watch anything involving the Shinsengumi.
So it looks like Hajime Saitou is left-handed. What a rebel.
Really?! I didn't notice...with this Saito is now rivalling Hijikata in my books!!! :heh:
From the look in the OP, I'm sure the actions are coming. They just have too many Shinsengumi characters to introduce all at once in the first episode, and I guess a good way of doing that is through monologue? Besides, we haven't seen any of the main antagonists yet.

I'm hoping this goes more along the Saiunkoku harem route instead of that godawful angelique/la corda series with a real interesting female lead for a change. Ironically here Chizuru looks and sounds a lot like Shuurei. I hope that bodes well for the series.
I'm crossing my fingers on this one too. She had a sword, but she was afraid to use it. She hid instead of fighting. Not a good sign. But I hope she learns to wield the sword soon, or at least, not be completely helpless like the ridiculous females you mentioned. I'll throw in that useless girl from Haruka Hachuyoushou too as a female lead to not follow. That show would have been brilliant if she wasn't a complete waste of space. Well, at least in this one, she set out to find her dad -- that shows some self-initiation lol.
Rarely the main female in otome games got voiced. (Except for R-18 ones. LOLWUT logic is LOLWUT.) Oh, haha, I guess that explains it. *shifty eyes* LOL. Although, I have played I think 2 G-rated ones and I remember the guys being voiced. I forget the names of those two games though.

Yeah, I think maybe he talks way too fast? My favorite voice right now is Okita Souji and Saitou.
And man, that dinner scene with the VN background music = not good, lol.

Well, I'm not really expecting her to be good in the use of the sword (not to say that's impossible seeing as we haven't gotten a lot out of her past lifestyle yet), and I don't want her to be an expert on that without tons (years actually if we're going the realistic route which I highly doubt the series is going to employ) of practice. I just want someone who has an ambition and mind of her own, and not blinded by the good-looking guys by her side (ala Shuurei as I mentioned).
As for Chizuru, I like that she seems really suspicious (and fearful, for good reasons!) of the guys. Here's to hoping they'll give her (and the rest of the guys who are not without their own stock characterization as well) more personality compared to past reverse harem leads.

I wish I could see a reverse harem show with a truly strong fighting female lead, a girl that could fight with her own abilities, but to date, I have not seen one nor could I think of one.
Definitely agree about Kajika. She's strong-willed, yeah, but I could not feel a thing for her. While stubborn and childish, it never seemed like she had any real internal conflicts (probably aside from the romance parts) which made the scenes focused on her terribly dull and monotonous.
As for the lack of a strong fighting female lead in a reverse harem, well, perhaps we might just be expecting a bit too much from a genre meant mostly to pander? Sad thought, but well...

Very true, lack of internal conflicts is the perfect way to describe it. It's hard to sustain an interesting character who has none.
And yeah, it is perhaps hoping for too much -- but why must this be so? We get Teito from 07-Ghost and he has powers and can fight, and that was almost like a reverse harem, lol.
I want a show a female lead like Yoko from 12 Kingdoms in a reverse harem. I wonder why no one has ever created something like that? Do they not think that females would want to see something like that?
I do hope Chizuru can somehow alleviate this void, though I am not holding my breath, lol.

I noticed in one episode where they could easily and logically have ended at a cliffhanger, but purposely resolved the tension before the episode ended. Personally, this doesn't bother me, but I get why it should.
I've just seen the raw of episode 2 of Hakuouki and am very happy with it. She did pick up the sword, and had an all-too-reasonable result. But we see her using other skills -- both "feminine" caring and "masculine" daring. Both quite satisfying, to me anyway. And the sword will come into play eventually, I expect. The possibility of seeing those around her die is clear from the ending of ep1, and the fact that we already feel something for them gives that possibility dramatic and emotional force, I think.

I've seen the pix of her and what's-his-name blonde guy with the horns - but I was assuming that was more metaphorical, since I was thinking that the whole failed soldiers business is more scientific-related rather than supernatural.
I'm going to stop making assumptions and really just watch it for the pretty faces afterall.

I guess we'll find out if she's a demon or not as the series continues. Scientific info is based on something. Maybe Chizuru or another relative of Chizuru was the basis for the experiment and that's how they got to that point with the failed guys.

Well watched episode 1, I rather liked it, I got the Kenshin vibe from it as well. The opening reminded me of Samurai 7 though. Yeah it was weird they didn't pick up she was a girl from the first conversation with her, I found it weird that a couple of them refered to her as "her" or "she" but the others still referred to her as "The boy" I thought maybe there was sub error at first.

I didn't think about that aspect -- but this seems countervailing to the issue of Carl's sexuality (I don't know how the show resolves yet -- will probably finish the series when I have time.) But I could be very wrong and maybe presentment of sexuality at certain ages is a cultural thing. I understand what you mean about the complexity of the external world v. simplicity of her character -- but I don't understand how this could help someone grow when that person's growth is already at its apex when we meet her. Everything is just so clear to her.

Wow, good catch. It also seems from the OP and the end of Ep 1 that there's some sort of disease (probably turns them into demons) and the red vial may play a role in either curing or at least keeping the disease at bay. Def. think it ties in with her father. And I do think it is her too -- if we can judge by eye color.
I love the opening song so much and the ending theme a lot as well. I see from the info here that the ED is by Mao -- is there more to her name? It's hard to search for an artist on google whose name is just Mao. Is it Mao Abe?
I can't wait until the OST comes out. I really want it on my ipod now but turning mp4 into mp3 is sadly not my forte.

Hard to know for sure, but I think it is Chizuru. There is also an as yet unintroduced woman (much older) who is shown later in the OP.
Regarding the horns, I'm guessing it is related to the "failed soldiers", but might not mean she becomes one. Just to throw a wild theory out there: in episode 1, the Shinsengumi contemplated the possibility that Chizuru has knowledge related to the "failed soldiers", probably through her father. If they believe her father is responsible for creating the "failed soldiers", she is basically spawn of a demon. From this perspective the horns represent the mistrust that the Shinsengumi have in her.
:heh: I'm really just trying to point out that we don't have enough info to go on. As Sherlock Holmes said, "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." Unfortunately we do not have enough information to disprove much at this time. Or rather, theories based solely on the first episode have shaky foundations.

It is Chizuru. There are two other female characters introduced in the OP, one young girl and an older woman.
But it is this picture (shown below) in the ED that makes we wonder about something. Is that girl shown in the background with Okita another new girl or is that Chizuru? :confused: She wears the same outfit that Chizuru wears in the OP pic I posted earlier but her face doesn't look like Chizuru's. If that's Chizuru...then is that a strong indication of a possible romance with Okita? I personally think it's a different girl and not Chizuru...but then that makes me question the similar outfit.

Yup, thats my point, I basically thought there were 3 more supporting female characters and those 2 shots you mentioned, supposed to be the same female character.
One innocent as showed in the OP and the other..well... seemingly her devious and seductive side as shown in the ED. Never thought that character had anything to do with Chizuru even though their character designs look very alike which often happens in anime anyway.
I'll have to say though, that if Chizuru turns out to be like that, it would be very interesting indeed.
I did not think that the horned girl is Chizuru, but because I'm all about curiosity, I went over to the official game website and then to Minitokyo to look at scans.

Ah, my bad, sorry (Though it was links to images, and speculation around those images)! Though from what I could tell from the images, the story seems to become more interesting later on. (Is that vague enough?) But I guess that's the curse of being a game adaptation, since we are still in the "tutorial/introduction" place in the game. *Remembers the looooong introduction/tutorial-phase of Final Fantasy: Unlimited, which killed the anime once it started to pick up the pace.*
They did almost completely reproduce one of Hajime's CGs in the episode. Here's to hoping that the quality will keep up, and not drop like the Titanic after the first three episodes.
So far it seems like the story tries to set up a status quo to upset later on.

Watched most of epi 2 raw needed to see Saito cooking. I kept thinking how Okita sounded a lot like Ginji from GetBackers...yeah same seiyuu :heh: Thats now at least 3 GB seiyuu's also doing this.

Same clothing could mean they are similar in social status, and by the look of their get-ups, I'd say it's high social ranking - royalty maybe? I'm really warming upto the cast thanks to this episode, and because of that has become one of my favorite shows of the season. Not to mention how i'm liking the plot progress, which had me glued to the screen.
Hijikata is probably my favorite male of the series, and i quite like Okita as well. Interesting on how he'll develop eventually. Chizuru is still just an adorable little button though. When you think about all the good looking men around her, she fits in perfectly.
& Ko Otani score still impresses. I love what i've hearing in this episode.

Just watched a subbed version of episode 2. It was good, held my attention the whole time. At first I thought it would be slow but I find the pace to be good. It lets you get a real feel for each character, and seeing how they interact and live in the first one and a half episodes really lets you develop attachments to these guys. Already I think I'd feel really sad if any one of them were to die now. :upset:
I'm totally loving this series. I really like Chizuru. Not only is she pretty and innocent but the girl has guts as well!

I adore this series already. I'm a sucker for samurai anime as it is, but the cast is what really makes the series stand out to me. Okita is shaping up to be one of my favorite anime characters, I can't wait to see more of him.

And what did she say? She blushes and says arigato gozaimasu. Hhahaha!!! So sweet and adorable that Chizuru. And I love that she is fearless when called upon! Now if only she can learn to fight -- it seems promising since even Saitou praised her technique.
I think that I'm giving up hope for any meaningful action -- though that opening sequence in Ep 1 was such a tease. Hope I'm wrong and we see some really awesome fighting in Ep. 3 -- it certainly was set up that way.
And after thinking about it, maybe the horns girl isn't her? IDK -- everyone looks alike, the only thing we can judge on is eye color, since clothes and hair can change -- that was why I thought it was her.
Went to the website and love the poster there -- def. a power up, as someone mentioned before.
Ep. 3 cannot come soon enough!
Christ how many Kuudere's does a group need? I hate to say it but the characters aren't really grabbing my attention that much, so I hope they're developed quickly or the plot starts to go at a faster rate (though it seems that's happening anyway) because otherwise I'm going to get bored . Decent episode though.

Haha, that part made laugh too. That's the first time I see someone so happy to be told such a thing. So adorable. Even Sanna couldn't resist her cuteness.

Finally saw the subs... series are getting better! Can't wait to see the next action filled episode :p
I thought the part where Chizuru turned the sword -blade upwards with that serious face was quite funny (in a cute way) when I watched the epi without subs. Then my humour was all dispelled with the subs.
Wonder if there is a possibility that Okita's tuberculosis, should it appear in this story's universe, will be "miraculously" cured by the failed soldier kool-aid ?
Of course, I haven't noticed any indication in the epis thus far or suggestions in the OP/ED that lean toward the illness being showcased - but considering the role of doctors in the story, then why not include this aspect of the historical figure.

@Presage, I actually went and read up about the Ikedaya incident after watching ep 2, and lets say... if they are following history then your feeling about Sannan is somewhat correct. I too, had a somewhat bad feeling especially when they portrayed him in the beginning with the eerie background music (although it seemed to be resolved somewhat later... though temporarily IMO)
If he wasn't in the original game, then the anime probably added him down just to make it more historically accurate, but I'm not sure how they intend to proceed.

Its good to see some action at least a teaser hopefully the next episode will have some sword fights . Also by the look of things Chiruzu wont be seeing much action . I am a bit disappointed with her character she is bit too enamored by Shinsengumi . Coming to seiyu there a few seiyu who send a shock wave down my spine in pure excitement . One of them is Nobuo Tobita . When I watched the first episode I was very suspicious of Sannan and the reason was Dr Jackal . After WMB mentioned GB my head went in that direction . And I was like Ooh Yes ... Gosh I wish Nobuo Tobita was cast as an antagonist his voice does more just to gray/negative characters . He probably has the most orgasmic voice after Kujira .

episode 2 was decent looks like ep 3 will be the first real fight scene we get and the aftermath. But for some reason im getting a really bad feeling about whats really going on in the series.

When I think about it, part of the reason I enjoy this anime so much is because it reminds me of Gintama. It's biased my view of the Shinsengumi forever, and it looks like I'm not the only one in this case :p
I was also expecting Yamazaki to pull out a tennis racket at some point. And I'm still waiting for someone to call Kondou-san "Gorilla", he seems like the character closest to his Gintama counterpart so far :heh:

If you look carefully at the scene when Chizuru brings the food. Sannan is facing a desk or something that has test tubes and some sort of piping, I think. It looks like the sort of setup you would use to extract something. That made me wonder if he wasn't already contemplating (or outright taking) it.

Lets just say I am biased when it comes to Gintama . So Shinsengumi from Gintama is still cooler . Most girls okay let make that all girls will disagree with me . But just used Kondo's stalking Hijikata's Mayora and Okita's Sadism or worse Yamazaki Badminton tenacity . One thing very similar, though Kondo is head of Shinsengumi and his valor is celebrated in history . In both this animes I have never seen/come across his poweress in actual combat . Regarding Sannan I have to agree with the injury maybe foreshadowing to him turning on Shinsengumi . And Sannan seems way smarter than Kondo also comes off as a better leader . I am not questioning his alliance/obedience just that the injury may turn him into a Oni/Zombie <SPECULATION> .

Ep 3 was excellent
I was extremely pleased with them making the fight scenes bloody enough and the whole Ikedaya part was actually done really well. I was also surprised how much they followed history too in the sense of who got hurt and *sigh* Okita.... though in a different way.
Looks like DEEN splurged a bit more on this compared to their other works this season. I look forward to any future big battles if this one is a good indication.
Chizuru is starting to bug me a bit though, shes cute but I wish she could be more useful during their battles or at least learn how to defend herself:uhoh:
And Sannan definitely doesn't look too pleased with his current situation.

Um, I thought "unclouded" sword style meant that Chizu-chan had the ability to draw her sword and protect her friends, even if she wouldn't win. Not that she runs into enemy territory, keeps her sword sheathed and then gets saved again.
She better get her act together real soon, or she drops below Akane (Harukanaru Toki no Naka de) in usefulness, considering that at least Akane randomly called down divine intervention when things got tough.
Anyway, new status quo: The Shinsengumi seems to trust Chizuru now, at least enough to play around with her outside.
Oh, and Souji doesn't feel so good. Damn, I had hoped that of all historical facts to get changed, that one would have been. Especially as we seem to be going the Toshi route, which means that maybe Souji wont be cured (if he was in his own route, but maybe he just lived his last years in peace with Chizuru or something).
Anyway, I hope the zombierais show up again soon, so that we can get back to the main plot (I also want [bee-spoiler-censor-eep] to show up soon).
Hey, maybe this Souji doesn't have TB, but instead something related to the zombierais and therefore can be cured by Chizuru or her father! *Hopes 'cause I always like Okita the best in Shinsengumi adaptations, and he ALWAYS dies, except for in Gintama.*

Episode 2 was great, got to see Chizuru's potential with her short sword. I'm starting to beable to remember names and faces of the cast now, so that's a good thing too.
Just saw ep3 raw.
Action was good but I was hoping to see Hijitaka in action. D: And I was hoping Chizu would draw her sword, especially during that staircase scene - kind of disappointed that all she did was gawked at the guy before Saito killed him for her. Although...Saito smiling after she left made up for it. :heh:
Oooh, bad guy is bad...but he's so hot...gah! being.drawn.over.to.the.dark.side...orz
Surprised that nothing happened to Sannan...yet. I'm really, really hoping to see Hijikata in action SOON! D:

Anyway, I just watched episode 3, and was impressed with the fight scenes. Very nice. I'm not really sure how raids are supposed to work though. I always thought they would be quite chaotic but I didn't quite get that feeling with this raid.
I don't really care that Chizuru isn't proving to be very competant with a sword. i mean it's not like she's supposed to or would be able to become competant in a matter of days. However, I want to see her actually being more relevant to the plot. We still don't know how exactly her father ties into this, and she doesn't really have much of a role besides being the Shinsengumi's friend. She appears to be competent treating wounds, which would make sense if she's the daughter of a doctor, but that hasn't really been given much focus.
As for the Shinsengumi, I can't help but feel that their banter with each other, to portray them as good comrades, seems a litle forced. Does anyone else get that or is it just me? Oh about that, i need to look up Shinsengumi history because i don't have a fucking clue what's going on here...

Personally i find the interaction between the Shinsengumi members to be done pretty well. I can easily feel the bond these people share during each scene. It's really well placed together, especially in episode three.
Hmmm...maybe I'm just in a melancholy mood today...

Finally saw the subbed version.
For me series are getting better with each episode, the story progresses and action finally takes place. I also liked the two main villians, especially the blonde one. He completly messed up with souji and didn't even break a sweat.
Wonder what is with those arms of the other guy...
I also liked the scene where Chizuru, Shinpachi and Sano were running towards the festival^^
But at the same time it made me sad... I guess those two will be the first ones to die :(
Also liked how Souji tried to protect Chizuru without even knowing why :D
Though I hope that Chizuru will learn at least some basic fighting, otherwise she mostly gets in the way...

And i don't know why everyone is predicting deaths on this show -- if anything, this ep. showed us how fast they healed and how it seems like they'll take the more lighthearted route so that no one will be seriously injured. could be wrong. idk.
and what is that music during that cheesy (but sweet) scene when they both grabbed her hands? it sounds like some very familiar classical piece, can't put my fingers on it.

You can be comrades and not always get along.

I expect that before the half-way point she will at least end up having to fight someone herself without someone having to save her butt, and probably at that point or after that point she will probably end up killing her first person. Sort of an expected event for a character of her type in series like this, but given that she's going to be at or close to the front lines of the group now she'll at least develop better fighting skills and end up having to kill if need be.

Yeah, the bad guys are really strong, still waiting for the gun carrying guy to make an appearance. I guess it'll be one of those "can't win until you power up" kinda things. I wonder if we'll get the main evil guy falling for her as well. I would LOVE that. hah. And she did look cute this ep., I like how she says, "hai!" so enthusiastically all the time.

Also, what's up with that scene where the glasses guy (I'm sorry, I'm terrible with names and I still don't know what he's called, hahaha. S... something!) was holding his hand? Seems like it's not completely recovered yet, as he was trying to claim. Wonder if it'll play a big part in the future and actually compromise one of their plans, eh.
Next week seems like we're getting to a somewhat important battle, so I'm looking forward to it. :V

I actually thought his skull had cracked from that punch. His skull should've cracked (Then again, that other guy's hand should've broken from punching a guy's forehead, but it looks like he has super-stength or something and has the obvious Required Secondary Powers That Are Never Mentioned.)

The two guys who defeated them so easily are rather special, I think we will find. Super-powers either medically or supernaturally enhanced? Maybe a connection with papa?

Hid hand won't get better, it was even stated in episode 1. That's hwat maked him depressed that he can't do anything.
though I do think that he will eventually do something out of ordinary... and probably will get killed later.

I'm not sure I agree with that. Waving an unsheathed sword around is just as likely to attract extra attention, thus extra attackers. Not that that I'm against her defending herself, if it comes to that.

I'm sorry, but I don't think this makes any sense at all, lol. Just by recklessly charging in there, you're already drawing attention. I mean, you just don't charge into a fight like that without having your weapon ready. At least pick up a rock or something, lol. Like Kanon said, at least draw your sword at top of the stairs when Saitou comes to the rescue. Don't just nod when told you need to protect yourself -- bust out the sword, girl! Anyway, small issue, but kinda lends itself to the direction her character will take.
