View Full Version : Why is aspect ratio of AF-F Gilgamesh different from Live-Evil's?

Both videos are 640x480 but AF-F has small black bars at the top and bottom where as L-E has none, why? Which releases has the right aspect ratio? This difference is also present in Paranoia Agent released by A-J and AonE. Which releases are being stretched/squizzed? Which are closest to its source's original aspect ratio?

Are the sources DVD? Some people are still too stupid to relise that initial DVD resolution = 720x480- NOT 4:3(which is the aspect ratio of a standard monitor/TV)!!! Which is why when stupid people rip from DVD, they don't know to resize it to a 4:3 res (usely 640/480 or 512/384 if you're pressed for bits). Which is why some relised will exibit small black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. So if there're boarders, and it's not 16:9, most likely a stupid encoder.
I've seen a few raws in 720/480 too... some of the Planet ES raws I saw were like that. Nope not widescreen, just someone capturing to a DVD-ready res.
There IS a widescreen format between 4:3 and 16:9, but it's only used in Europe as far as I know (Digital TV is more commen in Europe now, and that aspect ratio can be easily zoomed to 16:9 or 4:3). I've never seen an anime done in this ratio, whatever it is.
Anyway, that's how it is as far as I know its.

It's most likely a difference in the raws and who's cropping and who's not. Captured video usually has little black bars to the sides (heck, even DVDs sometimes have it).

The correct aspect ratio is to do like L-E did, which is crop out the black bars and resize to 4:3. I have extensive experience with capturing and encoding anime in Japan and they are usually broadcast with these black bars which are meant to be cropped off. The person who is originally capturing these raws in Japan (there are not many cappers for Gilgamesh as it airs on obscure networks), does not do this for whatever reason and AF-F doesn't either, I guess.

Most people know that NTSC uses nonsquare pixels at 720x480 (or really...481 visible scanlines)...but most people don't know that this correctly scales down to 656x480 in square pixels, NOT 640x480. The physical aspect ratio of TVs and computer monitors are that slightly different. But it doesn't usually make much difference, especially since DVDs often have bits of black on the sides, so cropping those off and scaling to 640 whether or not you know it's really supposed to be 656 is good enough.
Though personally I don't know what happens with capped raws, whether when at 720x480 there are usually bars on the top/bottom or sides or both...

Ookla, usually with Japanese anime (it depends on the channel and the production company), it'll have black lines on the top, sides, or both. Wolf's Rain, for example, always had lines on left and right but never on top or bottom. Other shows have lines on all four sides. It's almost random, and I am not sure the process as to how they decide how many lines it'll be broadcasted at.
In any case, the Gilgamesh downloadable raws are 640x480, with black lines on top and bottom. The original capper fails to remove the lines when he resizes from 720x480 to 640x480 so the aspect ratio is actually skewed. Cropping off the black and resizing to 640x480 fixes this problem (although it's an imperfect solution).
Hope that sheds some light on the situation.
