View Full Version : Angel Beats! - Novel Discussion
Welcome to the Angel Beats! Novel Discussion thread.
Here's a quick blurb from Wikipedia about the Angel Beats! Novels:
A series of seven illustrated short stories written by Jun Maeda and drawn by GotoP entitled Angel Beats! Track Zero were serialized between the November 2009 and May 2010 issues of ASCII Media Works's Dengeki G's Magazine.[10] The main character of the stories is Hinata, and is a prequel to Angel Beats!, which tells the story of how the SSS was formed. A special extra chapter focusing on Girls Dead Monster was published in the sixth volume of Dengeki G's Festival! Deluxe on March 29, 2010. The chapter titles for the stories are taken from song titles from various musical artists. The first chapter, "Two Person Rocket" (二人のロケット, Futari no Rocket?), was posed online with illustrations by ASCII Media Works.[11]

And here is the link to Chapter one: http://subsmith.wordpress.com/2010/04/01/angel-beats-track-zero-chapter-1-a-rocket-for-two/
Much thanks to subsmith, hopefully someone will do the rest. Its pretty funny, and I actually like Yuri and Hinata's interaction alot. Its great getting to know more about the guy. A very funny and yet intriguing first chapter a microcosm of the show itself in some ways.
I like how much it emphasizes Hinata's desire for "a human being and warmth" after he sees what else the school really has to offer, it meshes with the valuing life aspect and highlights in contrast just how weird the school must be for the average self-aware person who doesn't conform.

These are awesome thank you! I will have to email him thanks as well.
Man these chapters keep getting better. The double translations makes certain passages a tad confusing but its interesting to see how it all started. Yuri is getting on my nerves more and more, Tenshi gets more interesting as a character, and I have a lot more respect for Hinata now, cool guy.

Just finished reading all seven chapters (and will start on the Girls Dead Monster one next) - being trilingual has its advantages :P
Notes:
- Reading how Yurippe and Hinata "discovered" that Tenshi was more than an NPC was interesting. First they witnessed her using Hand Sonic on Chaa, then she commented on the violent behavior. If it was just the latter, then Yurippe would likely have concluded that Tenshi was merely human. But in combination with the Hand Sonic they thought she was a "sysadmin".
- Chaa could make a gun in 170 hours. But the prequel already presents the "Guild" underground as ready-made, with lots of different weapons already assembled in racks. In a basement with more than thirty levels. Who did all that?

Interesting. I think this made my hypothesis, wherein Kanade was part, or even leader, of an SSS-like group (Gen. 0 insurgents) which had gone much much further than the current SSS in terms of technology and making the afterlife chaotic, look a little less contrived. They may had started an all-out war against the NPCs at one point, realized that there is no God and that rebelling is ultimately useless, and then proceeded to face their regrets in life and move on / disappear. Kanade chose to stay behind to ensure that history would not repeat itself, and that newcomers will live a peaceful afterlife before reincarnation/ascension.And it is possible that Naoi also chose to stay behind with her.

Didn't read pass ch 4 yet.
But if your speculation is right, the future Tenshi(s) would be awesome then. Just image how the order would then be kept in this school with that pair :heh:

Oh yes, and
- it was apparent that both Yuri and Hinata know that the school is a place for you to sort out your unfinished business and once you were satisfied, you would disappear. This makes Yuri less than honest when she told Otonashi about how conforming would make you disappear.
I only skimmed the Girl Dead Monster chapter, I think it was mostly fluff with little relevance to the main plot.

a few things I got from reading the novels
Yuri is the not first one to rebel. They were others before her. Kanade had her guard skills long before that.
Yuri is chronic liar and manipulator
Hinata x Yuri seems to be very possible

Okay, but which magazine, and what volume? I've been collecting all the Denki G's with the novel in it. But, I've never heard anything about the Girls Dead Monster chapter.

I've read the first four chapters. Hm, as time goes by, I'm starting to sympathize with Tenshi more and more.

Oh, the envy. But I'll get there someday as well, I hope.
Just caught up with the latest translated chapter (4). So Chaa is actually a high schooler too, I thought he was way older than the others :heh:
It's interesting to see how the SSS was founded. These chapters certainly didn't change my mind about Yuri, she acts too much like a bitch for my tastes. Though I can see she's got some good sides to her. She and Hinata sure jumped to conclusions fast about Kanade, but it's good to see they actually tried to communicate with her at first, I'm curious to see how that discussion in her room will turn out. I wish I could sniff Tenshi's pajamas... What am I saying? That part was a bit weird.
I want to see Kanade in her pajamas...

Same here, I read all the chapters and she definetly sounds almost like haruhi. In the anime though I get a different vibe from her though like she became nicer or something. She still carrry that same resentment but I didn't think she was that extreme before.

The most logical conclusion to this is that Yuri was still boiling down after what happened before she died.
Being all alone for years most likely jaded her before dying, then hanging around with "comrades" warmed her up.
The evident part is that her resentment is vastly toned down, like in the novel, she is quite angry like half of the time when a touchy subject is brought to the table. The fact she wasn't really fancying random stuff in the novel indicates clearly she was quite obsessed in finding a lead and beating "something to pulp".
I wouldn't be surprised if her development in the novel will lead by the end of it, her current state of mind in the anime. (Fun fact is that, if the whole "Tenshi is human" popped right in the novel, she would definitely go panzer, unlike in her anime period).

Disclaimer: This is briefly summarised/translated from hades9053's Chinese translations. I don't promise these accurately summarise the chapter, but they will give an idea of what happens.
Any indented paragraphs are directly translated; some of the lines, especially Hinata and Yuri conversations, were too good to pass up.
Chaa having joined the SSS proceeds to explain how he created the gun and demonstrates by creating a nail out of dirt in a few minutes. Yuri manages to do the same in two hours, while Oyama and Hinata fail.
The underground that later becomes Guild had long already been in existence (it's in one of the first few levels that the above happens). Chaa explains he's only explored to the 22nd level because he feared he would not have supplies for the remaining levels.
While Hinata is away gathering supplies, Yuri remains in that room and has successfully created a toy windmill from dirt.
"How clever. With effort, you'll be able to make a gun."
"I won't do that sort of uninteresting thing. This windmill is awesome, isn't it?"
"Then, give it to me."
"No."
Yuri explains she has to make two more.
I did a headcount. Me, Oyama and Chaa.
Three people.
It really is for us, isn't it.
They go deeper into the underground and Yuri suddenly says "Hello" in English. When Hinata asks her why, Yuri explains she's wondering if underground people understand Japanese.
They encounter and subdue a heavily injured but violent "underground person", with injuries enough to scare Oyama. Yuri starts her interrogation, only for the "underground person" to respond:
"Are you in cohoots with that person..."
The "underground person" then mentions the existence of a Boss in the deepest underground.
"There's something like that?"
"That fellow said that fellow must be defeated in order to end the game..."
"Game..."
"So I must finish this with my own hands..."
"It won't end?"
"Huh?"
"This world won't end with just that. It'll just keep continuing on. We must use our own strength to change it. Don't worry, we're your allies. Join us."
Such a violent person wouldn't agree so easily.
"..."
That boy looked at Yurippe's face.
"...fine."
And the "underground person" apparently sets the record for being the quickest to join the party. He reveals his name to be Noda. Even as Yuri gives the orders for the group to defeat the Boss together, Noda brushes her off, saying that he's invincible with the Boss as his only enemy.
"I say, Noda-kun. We're a team. Nobody will fight alone."
"Only I can defeat that fellow."
He had started to walk already.
Oyama becomes more and more frightened as the party explores deeper. As they reach the 27th floor, a discussion about the "game world" and the Boss springs up. Hinata explains that this world is the afterlife and that the objective of the party is to take revenge on God (and wonders why it's him and not the leader who's saying this).
Noda disbelieves Hinata's words, believing this world to be a game. And for some reason, he had thought Yuri the main heroine. Chaa adds that Yuri is his wife.
Noda, hearing that he's not the main character, begins to BSOD. It gets worse when Yuri says he's a side/supporting character. Pushing Oyama away, Noda runs away from the party.
Yuri makes the decision not to chase after Noda, since they've come so far. Hinata, slightly frustrated, calls Yuri a "clever leader" with sarcasm. It leads to Yuri accusing Hinata of being jealous that Chaa had called her his wife.
It's Hinata's turn to ruminate as he wonders if he's really proven to be useless for the party now. In the end, he suggests that they go after Noda. Yuri's not interested but Chaa suggests they split the party: two go after Noda and the other two move forward.
"So, what do you think?"
Yurippe asked me.
Ah! I see the options!
·Search for Noda with Oyama
·Move deeper underground with Yurippe
·Change Yurippe's Equipment:Uniform→Swimsuit for playing Volleyball
The cursor keeps moving to and fro. (What is that third option! Even I don't understand!)
Hinata decides that he and Chaa should proceed to the Boss while Yurippe and Oyama search for Noda. Yuri's not happy with the decision, saying that she as leader should meet with the Boss.
Yuri then points at Chaa saying that Chaa is too meticulous to leave the final strike of the boss for her. Chaa agrees. (Hinata: Why are you admitting it!)
The end decision: Yuri and Hinata move to the Boss, Chaa and Oyama seek the missing Noda.
"Oh, speaking of which."
Not too long after, Yurippe seemed to deep in thought.
"What is it."
"The two of us haven't been alone for a while."
Aa, really. I've always been thinking of it. Did you only realise is now. How slow. Wait, is it because I'm bothered by it...
"Even arguing with each other seems like something from a long time ago."
"I'm sorry I don't remember fighting ach other before. I only have fresh memories of how you hit me."
"I'm just a female opponent. Or are you just weak? The one who defeated Chaa was me. Your only strength is falling from the roof. I fear for our future battles."
"I think it's because I haven't been serious yet."
"Serious, huh... When can you become serious?"
"That is, when you're in danger."
"Before that happens, you'll be defeated. You won't become serious if you yourslf are in danger?"
"It's my nature. I can't become serious for myself."
"Ah, Hinata-kun. I'm worried for you..."
I don't want to hear that from you.
"Hinata-kun, here."
"Eh?"
Yurippe handed me that toy windmill.
"What is this for?"
"I'm lending it to you. Don't you spoil it, okay?"
"Then hold it yourself."
"Take it as a temporary talisman. I've already wished on it that you won't die."
"Oh..."
I glanced at the windmill.
Isn't this a world where we can't die...
But she at least was worried for me...
“Thank you。” [Spoken in English]
I accepted the windmill, placing it in my pocket.
They reach what seems to be the lowest level of the underground. Hinata and Yuri have a conversation on the identity of the boss.
"Yaaaaaaaaaaaa-"
Having climbed down the ladder, Yuri covered her mouth with her hands and shouted.
Soon enough, we heard yaaa- yaaa-... the echos bouncing back.
"It's a really wide space. Why don't you try it? It's really comfortable."
"Even if it has its charms, won't this alert the Boss to our presence."
"I say, let me tell you something."
"What."
"The Final Boss... won't move."
"Why."
"The Final Boss exists to sit on its throne and sprout nonsense. That's why it won't charge and attack us."
...
Speaking of which.
The term "Final Boss" was first used by you.
Did you know that, Yurippe?
The "Final Boss" was indeed sitting and waiting for them, in the form of a girl.
"It's still the first form."
"What are you saying."
"When the HP is halved, the boss will change into something different."
Now that she said it, it really felt like it would happen.
"So, speak your lines now."
Yurippe raised her torch as if it was a sword to her opponent.
Not bad, but we were unarmed. If it really became a monster, what would we do?
"...it's a good morning."
So it said.
....
We waited for the rest of the speech.
...
"...let's start."
"How short!"
Leaving both Hinata and Yurippe speechless. One of them starts to complain about the lack of drama (read: an epic Final Boss speech), how the Final Boss speaks nothing of their journey.
"What are you?"
...
Waiting.
...
But it feels like she doesn't speak too much, her lips pressed firmly together.
"How shallow-minded."
That girl stood up.
The cape reveals a knife.
"Damn it, this person must be an angel. Good in battle too."
"The fight will start."
"How do we fight?"
"Thinking of how to fight is..."
"Looks like we don't have time left."
Just when I thought she had only stood up, the next instant she was in front of us.
How fast!
"Damn..."
"If this was a shounen manga, here would be where it says "to be continued"."
No way it could be like that.
Chapter 5 end.

I guess Yurippe windmill will ultimately save Hinata from getting killed by Shiina once they engage in battle. So i guess Yurippe is the one who created some of the windmill toys like the cute puppies Shiina usually look at.
IMO the novel is just too good. The difference in hinata's and yuri's character is too much. The hinataxyuri pairing would have definetely had the strongest fan base if they continued developing it like this in the anime. I just can't see why they made it out so different. People hardly even think that this bond exists. It's kinda sad.
Knightrunner

I wish the bond is stronger, but they decided Hinata will go with Yui. I guess both Hinata and Yurippe mellowed down, but the latest episode (episode 11) kind of should their bond just kind of rushed.

lol if only they would have focus on the Hinata and Yuri relationship or past. In AB they don't have to be a couple but at least show they have some kind of special bond.

Oh, awesome. No more of my crappy Chinese translations/summaries! Can't wait for Chapter 7 and the special extra chapter. I definitely misunderstood some of what happened even if I dislike a couple of lines that they translated (thought it does flow better, the way they did it) :|a
I like some of your translations too :) These chapters are definately a huge plus. Now I know Yurippe have some knowledge of creating objects and the real final boss is still out there.
There was even a really touching moment for both Yurippe and Hinata in those chapters escpecially chapter 6.
why isn't the anime like this :(
chapter 6 was really good and touching. i think i will just become satisfied with the novels.
Yeah, I also thought that chapter 6 was really touching.
So one last chapter left and extra chapter left... ;_;
Is there still a possibillity for HinataxYuri?

In my opinion, there's always a possibility of almost any pairing, some more than others. Hinata and Yuri are close, definitely closer than the rest of the members of the SSS. It's been implied in the anime that the SSS has been in existence for some years. Within the years between the light novel and anime, something could have happened, or maybe it didn't.
We may never know or find out.
Chapter 7 is also released now.
I really wish we could have seen that fight animated. Hinata... why couldn't you be the main character in the anime too? Even if he had a little "help" from Yurippe, his final attack was just amazing.
Well, in the end, this novel was pretty good and answered some of the questions we had about the creation of the SSS and the current Guild, but it's too bad we didn't learn more about the characters' background. Maybe there is more in that Girls dead monster chapter?
nice. now one more extra chapter for GirlsDeMo then we have to wait for June 23 i think for the volume version containing all 8 chapters plus 1 NEW chapter. for a total of 9. :D
Reading through Chapter 5 makes me realize just how much of a kid Yuri was at the beginning.

Wow, Noda was beat up by Chaa quite badly. That must be why he spent all those times training his own body, i guess
ah. nice bonus chapter. a little more insight into GirlsDeMo. i guess after that ooyama stopped playing with her, during the episode where they were told to go to class, ooyama wasnt part of the mahjong players. :)

I thought all of that was 'Shiorin' 's creativity writing? :D
Haha, i almost believe all that, the girls from her story are hilarious.
At least we now know Sekine loves to play pranks :heh:
Yusa was out of screen again....
I believed everything up until the moment she started to talk about Iwasawa... :heh:
In the end, this chapter tells way more about Sekine than any of the others. She's the real little devil!

In Chapter 5, Shiina appeared.
Anyone more from the SSS appeared in Chapters 6 and 7? We still have 4 more guys, I think. (without counting the music band).
And how many chapters are finally?
so far the first 7 chapters of the novel only introduced the FF:
1) Hinata
2) Yuri
3) Kanade
4) Ooyama
5) Chaa
6) Noda
7) Shiina
and it ends with the 7th too. there's a bonus chapter for GirlsDeMo and another one just got released this week i think.
