As far as the obligatory field trip episodes go, this was pretty standard. Mugi was a lot of fun, though.

My only complaint was how they chose to have Ritsu have her bangs up the whole time...>,> I was excited for this episode in hopes of seeing it down...
Everything else, I approve. XDDD Especially the preview. =))
Hmmm. I'll need to wait for subs on this one. Conversation humor escapes me for now.
Joyful school trip! It reminds me of my school days. I went to Kyoto, too. Kyoto is the most popular place for school trip.
yeah... Okinawa is a bit spendy as a destination (distance, etc). Kyoto is a mere train trip and many schools go there. which... makes it a natural for a "slice of life comedy destination".

Finally got a hold of raw... really liked the pillow fight^^ Go Mugi! This trip must be a dream come true for her^^
Also liked how Nodoka asked directions and Ritsu fell over :D
And we also got slight Mitsu scene... So far Ritsu, Mugi and Sawako are stealing the show for me :D
EDIT: Idiot who repped me down and said "No"... could you explain yourself, please? What No? No there was no Mitsu scene? No, it was not funny when Ritsu fell over? No, I still LOVE MIO more even if she barely does anything now? So which one is it?
anybody know if they play honey sweet teatime in this?

^You mean their new song? I really doubt that they would prefor in the middle of excursion... so no, no pratise and concerts in this episode.
I doubt we will hear ths new song so quickly when they started to work on it only in last episode...

Did you know guys that the new OP of K-ON!! reminds me of this music video:-

I had thought they lived in Kyoto since the S1 location shots are modeled from places around there. It's a bit odd...but not a buzz-kill.

Second that. Keeping virtually all the gags from the manga except for Ritsu's bangs? HULK SMASH!
Next episode seems to be a Synchronous (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SynchronousEpisodes) Lower Deck Episode (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LowerDeckEpisode), which sounds like a great idea, giving Ui and Jun some time in the spotlight.

Mugi was planning it all along! hahaha.....
anyways... nice episode! I really loved the original four! dont get me wrong... I loved azusa too! its just that I feel like 4 girls are better......
anyways... I have a theory that when azusa is going on 3rd year and the original four has graduated.... 3 new girls will join the light music club and those 3 will be acting exactly the same as ritsu, yui and mugi.... because azusa is already kinda like Mio to me... they look the same

One thing I like about the second season is that Mio has taken back her "only sane man" gimmick. After Azusa was introduced, Mio seemed to get more into the others wacky ideas, and leave the complaining to Azusa. But if they'll eventually graduate and leave Azusa behind, it's a good thing to have Mio back as the serious one.

This episode outdid episode 2 in terms of comedy.
Yui and Ritsu hijacked most of the episode, though Mugi made a few successful attempts at disrupting the flow. Fear her pillow-throwing arm of doom!
I expected the 'Ui with hair down' scene. How many people thought it was actually Yui?
And both Mio and Sawako got dragged into the others' antics. I think Mio eventually figured it was useless to fight it and that letting loose for a bit was the best thing to do.

Sadly, that joke just doesn't work as well when you can hear her voice. It worked better in the manga.

Well I got trolled at the start. I thought she finally has a sense of urgent responsibility. It was all a lie.
Goddammit.
Nice little diversion I guess. Personally not as good as the previous episodes though I did like it going into the end, as a means of good band bonding.
The next episode(s?) looks like it'll focus on the 3 sophomores left behind, which is generally a good thing since it's about time the series gave some time for the other characters aside from the core 4.:eyespin:

I can't help but agree with that, but that's because we knew what was coming. Given that some people were still fooled, it worked for those who didn't read the manga (or forgot this particular scene).
On a side-note, does anyone know if Mugi indeed spoke in kansai-ben at some point, like I suspect she did?
On a side-note, does anyone know if Mugi indeed spoke in kansai-ben at some point, like I suspect she did?
Yes. She spoke very fluently in Kyoto dialect.
Kyoto dialect is a bit different from Osaka dialect. Just a bit, but people in Kyoto insist that Kyoto dialect is more decent than Osaka's. Once Kyoto was the capital of Japan, so Kyotoneans think we are the best.
Shizuru of My-HiME speaks Kyoto dialect, too.
For those who missed it, I posted this in the previous thread:
http://mottohadeni.net/blog/2010/02/03/a-whole-lot-of-kotobuki-minako/
Nine Things to Know About Kotobuki Minako
1. Born and brought up in Kobe, Hyogo, her family was affected by the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995. She was aged only 3 at the time but recalls taking shelter in a car.
2. Being from the area, Mina’s Kansai accent down pat and the other Sphere girls often make her recite silly lines in the dialect for fun. Incidentally, her role in Umi Monogatari had her adopting an Okinawan accent.

This episode is "7 out of 10 : Good"
Unfortunately I don't know any tourist attaractions in Japan,so I can't partly understand what Yui and Mio...etc say. :(
However, I figure out how much they enjoy thier school trip.
I guess Japanese audience is reminded of thier adolescence and burst into tears.:D
I am also glad that Mugi is given precious opportunities to stand out.
She looks 10 times as pretty as ever. :)

It is just the atmosphere. When friends gather like that and lay down to sleep and someone suddenly bluters something random, it does get funny for no particular reason.

Another fun episode. Between Ritsu and Yui's antics, Mugi's continued exploration of "normal" world things, Mio trying desperately to be the mature one (and failing) and Sawa-chan trying desperately to be the sweet, respectable teacher (and also failing) I couldn't help but laugh through almost the entire episode. 9/10 for me easily.
Next week should be interesting with Ui and Azusa being in the spotlight for most of the episode. Maybe Azusa will want someone to practice with and find out that guitar seems to run in the Hirasawa family?
I thought it was a nice execution of the "senior school trip" scenario with these personalities. "School trip" episodes tend to be a favorite of mine in any 'daily life' series and this one flew decently. I don't know if anyone will ever be able to quite match "Okinawaaaaaaaa!!!! Okinawa!!!! ..." completely but it had the advantage of arriving early in the genre.
However, listening to Ritsu (Ritu, heh) absolutely mangle kansai-ben was a hoot. And I don't recall any other series where "sensei" suffered quite so much...
Preview looks unusual as well (the juniors get a taste of "after their seniors leave", I suppose).
However, listening to Ritsu (Ritu, heh) absolutely mangle kansai-ben was a hoot.
I thought that it was an improvement over the manga that she soon realized that she got in over her head, but still desperately tried to keep it up :D
Also her blink-and-you-might-miss-it reaction to Mugi's speech:

Her hard work in this episode reminds me of the fact that she is Yui's teacher.
Until now, she has acted as the 6th member of After School Tea Time, so I had forgotten perfectly.:D
It just occurred to (lunchtime rewatch) that Mugi is seriously channeling Lucky*Star Miyuki-wikibot this episode ... example: this moment starting at 6:30 (and other points in the episode).
Best Sawa-chan moment for me: the temple moment when she bought the enmusubi omamori. She had to be thinking "why on earth would I actually want children?" (8:15-8:40)

I must admit, I loved this episode. Perfect slice-of-life fun. I adore stuff like this for the same reason I read Enid Blyton books - it's like spending a pleasant, innocent evening with friends. The whole pillow fight scene, and Ritsu saying stupid stuff to make them laugh, had me grinning from groin to sternum. I'm sure people will complain, but as far as I'm concerned, complexity and cynicism can take a break for 25 minutes a week.
The next episode looks interesting, being the "other half" of today's events. Azunyan, Ui and Jun walking around an empty school? Yep, Enid Blyton would definitely have been proud. Although on her watch, the girls probably would've eaten a lot more fried rice.

The Blyton books didn't catch on nearly as well in the States (though I recall reading one or two in the library when I was young)... there was a series called the Bobbsey Twins that was fairly popular (about 4 siblings - two sets of fraternal twins) ... just childhood daily life. As a young Texas child, I was rather fascinated by these characters who said "shan't" in daily conversation.
The pillow fight was obviously one of our little princess Mugi's Big Goals in Life.

Heh, that was the first thing I noticed. :D
Words couldn't even describe how much I love this episode as the second one. KyoAni exceeds my expectations though I've quite disappointed on some of the minor events which they didn't include.
The life in a countryside and its places are really refreshing to watch especially in cultural heritage like Kyoto. Sometimes, it makes me want to grasp its ambiance and air someday. Also, the staffs seem did a lot of work in respect to the backgrounds and sceneries, nice job.
Meanwhile, I was like grinning like an idiot because of the girl's gags the entire time. For instance, when Ritsu and Yui rubbed the cow sculpture, the 'funny' words they used when they're about to sleep, and the pillow fight which started by Mugi. She certainly stood out the most and about time to show her inner self as a commoner because it really helps to appreciate her even more. Although Azusa had been temporarily separated to them, she will have her own spotlight together with Jun and Ui. Hope they would follow the original source faithfully.
It was funny to see Yui and Ritsu rub the pig to get smart.

The Ui/Yui intro also failed because the sub translator gave it away right off the bat by injecting a pronoun ("she") where there was none in the dialog. The actually line was a typical japanese implied-noun sentence fragment. A subtitle of "Okay, ... got change of clothes." instead of "okay, now she has a change of clothes." would have kept the joke intact.
Time to fire up Aegisub and tweak a bit...
In general, I haven't been annoyed at the translation this season though, just mild "eh?" moments when I see a subtitle that doesn't match what I'm hearing and shifts the intent to collide in my head. For example... Mio does not say "Jesus Christ!" at 14:27 (though it certainly reflects her exasperation). We're in Japan, people don't call out to gods they don't worship (or use much anglo-saxon profanity at all) so it jarred me to read it. I understand the dilemma of the translator though, because "Oy vey! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oy_vey)" is probably a perfect fit but one some Westerners might not understand. The longer "You give me a headache!" is, of course, too long.

This episode, out of all the others so far, is the one I related to the most. While I've never been to Kyoto, I can definitely relate to the pillow fight and the trying-to-fall-asleep scene; I remember my friends and I would basically act like the girls did here during sleepovers, spouting out random words and cracking ourselves up until after a few hours when we would finally fall asleep.
Very nostalgic, as well as being funny. :)
I don't understand the part where they say random words and mio laugh so hard....
Other than that this episode is great!...especially the pillow fight that mugi initiateed. I thought it was only due to their own sense of direction that they got lost but the part where nodoka got lost as well is surprising.
GreatTeacherKen
2010-04-28, 21:43
I think the sheer randomness of the words was why they were cracking up. As for Mio laughing, I think that's basically showing that although Mio tries to act serious, she isn't that different from the other girls. It's basically her 'serious' facade breaking down; notice how during the scene where they're trying to fall asleep, Mio doesn't laugh, it's only later when Ritsu says Skull again that she cracks up.

Mio's laughing at the end... It reminds me of some of the laughing fits I get and I do my best to hold it in but it's no use. I can't stop laughing for the life of me... can't breathe lol.

That whole "Jesus Christ" threw me off as well. I think it would've been better if they had her say something like "My Word!" Or something. Cuz it isn't that long, but it also doesn't bring in the religion stuff that people in Japan don't really say.

Mugi made passes at Mio in a public bath! How indece.....never mind. :D
And Ritsu hugged a scared Mio! Is that a thumbs-up for a semeuke relationship between the two girls?
But this episode is kinda fun and cute. Especially with Mio continuously laughing at Ritsu's random words and intonations.
Small note : There has been a research back in the 1980s that girls are better at recognising and remembering landmarks, while horrible in directions. Vice versa for the boys.
Another small note : It seems that Mio responds rather positively to Ritsu's silliness. They'd make a cute couple in marriage. :heh:
^
ah! I agree with Ritsu and Mio scene hugging each other XD but never thought of anything in the first place since it made me missed my bestfriend.
Mugi reminds me of Shizuru-sama from My-HiME. I missed her, ~enough of the yuri, errmm...~ :heh:
lol
Mugi made passes at Mio in a public bath! How indece.....never mind. :D
Watching Mugi gain confidence with her friends and do things that the "princess" can't do at home has been one of the more fun parts of the series. I suspect she'll become a fearsome but revered overlord when she takes over whatever it is her family does (and I have no doubt she'll take it over, girl or not o.O after reading the guitar shop sequences with Yui - the anime didn't quite project the "Mugi Stare of Doom").
And Ritsu hugged a scared Mio! Is that a thumbs-up for a semeuke relationship between the two girls?
Mio does all the asserting and superego conscience work.. but when the chips are down Ritsu is protective of the frightened little inner child of Mio.
Small note : There has been a research back in the 1980s that girls are better at recognising and remembering landmarks, while horrible in directions. Vice versa for the boys.
I keep on ongoing mental 3-d terrain map in my head 24/7, there are some landmarks but a lot of it is simply inertial and a sense of compass. This was a critical tool for hunting back in the Ice Age.
My wife routinely turns the wrong way out of stores in the mall and always thinks I'm going the wrong way or has a really skewed idea of how the city is laid out. But she knows what is near each landmark and goes from landmark to landmark.... probably a really good skill for roots&berry gathering. :)
Together, we argue our way across the landscape.
Another small note : It seems that Mio responds rather positively to Ritsu's silliness. They'd make a cute couple in marriage. :heh:
It would be interesting to see an anime try to take this sort of relationship ("best girl friend") and see how it evolves when boys actually enter the picture in or after college.

I won't be surprised if she hires the rest of her band as her personal maids and fires all her current personal staff.
If Mugi is the queen of her own court, then Ritsu is her butler, Yui is her jester, Azusa is her pet and Mio......is her slave. :heh:

I wonder if we put them both in a tight situation in different places, like a dilapidated and vacated prison in the middle of the night. :D
I always get lost looking for landmarks on the map, which I frequently do since I am lazy to constantly keep an eye on the map in an unknown place. But when it comes to directions, it is always easier to retrace my steps to the nearest train station. :heh:
The research conducted (I can't remember the title of the paper nor the journal), also pointed out that boys are good at playing with their visual imagination, while girls are good at finishing up the product of the imagination due to their brains and hands wired to put together sensitive details.
It would be interesting to see an anime try to take this sort of relationship ("best girl friend") and see how it evolves when boys actually enter the picture in or after college.
Kakifly already did a test. Mio rejected the idea totally. She wanted Ritsu all to herself. :D
I also though about Shizuru when I saw Mugi for the first time... but they still have quiet a lot of differences^^
well, they're both mysterious plus you have to love how they can manipulate people. hoping we'll get to see more Mugi even at least with the manga :eyespin:

Small note : There has been a research back in the 1980s that girls are better at recognising and remembering landmarks, while horrible in directions. Vice versa for the boys.

...does that make me a female with male inner workings? XD
Anyway, I've been thinking...ever since that anime-original-love-letter-to-Ritsu episode, KyoAni has been making headband-less Ritsu seem like an exclusive or rare occurrence in the anime. ...gah, I think I'm still bitter about that bangs joke not animated...>_>

Reminded me of every sleepover I had as a kid :) ... the giggle are contagious!!
That whole "Jesus Christ" threw me off as well. I think it would've been better if they had her say something like "My Word!" Or something. Cuz it isn't that long, but it also doesn't bring in the religion stuff that people in Japan don't really say.
I used, "Honestly!" It's a bit British English but sounds better, IMO.
Depending on the length of the sentence, "For crying out loud!" works as well.

I'm waiting for the concert where Mugi will sing :)
Sure, obligatory field trip etc. etc. Still managed to give me a few very good laughs. For the longest time I didn't want to episode to end.
Watching it while drunk made it even better, I believe. 9/10.

Another great episode. Every member of the light music club was funny. I liked how Mio softened up at the end. Yui and Ritsu were their usual selves. I love how hyperactive they are together. Mugi really showed her fun side, too. Funniest part of the episode was when Yui called Azu-nyan when they were lost instead of the teacher lol. Overall, a really funny episode.
9/10.
Something over the top and snark-filled to say . . . hmm . . .
Uhh . . .
I got nothing. It was a really good episode, okay?
9 Mio self-disciplines being worn down by her best friends out of 10.

I really loved how they made the character "Mugi"
because as Far as I know in anime... characters like Mugi are the boring ones...... while characters like Ritsu and Yui are the enjoyable ones.... But in K- on.., Mugi is quite enjoyable too:heh::heh:

Mugi pretty much breaks the whole 'boring rich girl' mold as it is.
While most rich girls prefer to lay back and have all the work done for them, Mugi does the exact opposite – she's active, disapproves of when she gets things done for her and even wants to work for her money, despite her having plenty of it available to her at any time.
She'd make a great wife and mother some day. :)

I guess she'll also become a great mistress, housekeeper and mentor of the children. Yes, Mugi, you are the best!

This was a hilarious episode. I was caught by the trick at the beginning too. My ears are horrid at distinguishing Japanese voices apart except for maybe one or two. I liked the part with the cow statue, very funny, and thanks to the forum I can understand the tag they wrote on too. Some how I excepted Yui to get accosted by deer like Tsukasa, sadly it didn't happen, And of course the the random words, scene and pillow fight were the highlights.

Although predictable that there would be a field trip episode, I really enjoyed this episode alot. I never thought that field trips in Anime would be more entertaining than the ones in real life... and yes, I did laugh my butt off this episode because of the stuff from Ritsu and Yui...

Marrying a girl would probably still make her a wife. :P
Really great, funny episode.
I have one trivial question. What is the second thing Ritsu randomly says after Mio turns off the light? CG has translated as "lycopene", Frostii "flick". From what I can hear, it is "RIKOPI-N", which I suppose means "lycopene". So why the big difference?

My guess is that Frostii interpreted as some sort of pun and that they tried making it work in the translation.
Ah, that was fun. But seriously, Yui and Ui looks too much alike, to the point of being a clone =_=

Nope. In the patriarchal context, the dominant member will be the husband, and the submissive will be the wife.

Just some random words, nothing really deep going on therefrom what I understand.
It's similar to real life when you have a sleepover. You turn off the lights, ready to go to sleep, then suddenly someone says a random word that doesn't seem to hold any connection to anything. I'm pretty sure that's guaranteed to produce a giggling fit.

"Skull" cracked me up the first time I heard it. It's so true, right down to the one person in the room who is actually trying to sleep (Mio, in their case). Loved that it was brought up again in the next episode.

So from my understanding, you say a random word and you can laugh?
Right...to test our that theory next time I'll try saying the following words in sleepover
NUCLEAR HOLOCAUST!!
DECAPITATION!
GUTS HANGING OUT!
ROCKS DROPPING ON BRAIN!
CRUCIFIXION!
IMPALING!
BAYONET IN EYE!!
CASTRATION!
SYPHILLIS!
IMHO, I'd prefer it if they replaced some jokes like the scared mio ones with the original ones in manga (http://i863.photobucket.com/albums/ab197/RandomRangerWhite/Mitsu/chkg_t_k_on_by_kakifly_v03ch07k-on_.jpg).
Yeah I found the 'skull' joke horrible. In fact I found it so horrible and incomprehensible, I'd rather watch this again.

Hmmm, maybe you had to have been on a scout campout, summer camp, sleepover, whatever - for this to have made sense or fired up any nostalgia. Some silly out-of-the-blue word (like "smock" or "aardvark") would set off peals of laughter after "lights out". Human teens and kids are just weird that way. But the word has to *sound* silly to the native language speaker (lycopene, skull to japanese), like "turpitude" (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/turpitude).
Basically any word that can sound funny in how it is pronounced results in giggling late at night when one is tired and young. While "skull" in English might not sound funny, the Japanese word sounded like it could be said in a silly way (also note the later Episode 5 lack of reaction form Ui and Azusa on seeing the worked typed out, so it might only really work when spoken...though Yui being Yui might not get that while giggling).

Just thought of a random bunch of scenes they've depicted on tv. And I guess due to my pessimistic mood, I thought of the most violent ones.
Was I the only one who lol'ed after reading that?
As mention above, the rocks dropping on brain is a actual tv scene. Or should it be rocks being thrown into the brains of dead guy who has had the top of his skull blown off while another guy is trying to eat tuna?
So...anyone up for guessing what in the seven hells I've been watching?:eyebrow:
I might have lol'd but my "wow, I guess that sort of thing isn't universal" alarm went off instead.
Well, I guess K-On is like a therapy. Light hearted comedy to balance out all the OTHER stuff I've watched.

My camp experience was simple. I tried to go to sleep and the other 3 blokes was talking about...I dunno soccer or how much of a douche the teacher was for making us go to sleep that early. I wanted them to STFU.
As for the lights out thing, we didn't yell out some stupid words, that would have got us into deep shite but probably sat down and played a nice, quiet game of poker.
Was I the only one who lol'ed after reading that?
Theory proven then?
I guess, I didn't have to bring out the big guns of 'WELL AIMED EXPLOSION LEADS TO 20 GUYS BURNING ON BOAT', 'COMMUNICATING WHILE LOSING BLOOD FROM CHEST' or the simple 'GUY PICKING UP HIS BLOODY ARM'
Traffaut is right

Just to present an opposing viewpoint, the "skull" gag (and its reprisal in the next episode) is arguably my favourite in the entire series so far. Not only did it ring true of my own get-togethers with friends, but it also fondly reminded me of classic kid's stories, like Enid Blyton's St. Clare's series. If you didn't find it funny, you just haven't had those kinds of experiences.

I thought the "skull" joke was a reference to Ritsu's forehead. ;)
Don't know where "lycopene" came from? Perhaps Aki Toyosaki just ad-libbed it, like Tsukasa Hiiragi's seiyuu ad-libbed "barusamikosu" in Lucky Star?

Lycopene is a food pigment, often seen in red vegetables and fruit (such as tomatoes and red carrots). Doesn't really have anything to do with anything, though.
