A side story involving Ui, Azusa and Jun. Oh some first years wanted to try but they are pure newbies. But it looks like we got next year's club members in those three. They just need a drummer.

I really, really liked this episode. Jun feels like the Ritsu of their group. And Ui can really do anything!
This episode kicked S2 episode 2 out of my number one K-On!! episodes so far. And there will still be more... :D
I give it a 10.
Why do they play "Go tell Aunt Rhody".
I think it's popular when kids play with singing in Japan.

Yeah, it's a given that Jun and Ui will join. Hopefully it won't be long before the mystery fourth girl makes her appearance. Also, there's another question to consider.
So many phone calls and pictures being shown.
Having the three play some music near the end was nice.
It will be nice if we get a few more episodes like this to go along. As proven by this one, they have potential.
Our Azu-nyan’s back!
“Azusa-sempai!” How I waited that.
Azu-nyan with her hair down. Like a Japanese doll? Kawaii!
Ui is good little sister. I want a little sister like her.
Jun is funny.

Little girls and their cell phones: The Animation.
Gets +1 from average for giving Jun a personality and jam session. This gives us hope that potentially another sidelined girl *cough*Nodoka*cough* or, dare I say, the other classmates will get the limelight.
Looks like we're back to manga content next episode.

A '10' for me for this episode. I share Takuan's comment above about this episode. It was really good. I'm about to watch it a third time now.
- We can probably get a sense, actually a sure-fire possibility, who's going to be the new club members: Azusa, Ui and Jun.
- Decisions, decisions: Long-haired or pigtailed Azusa(-nyan)? She looks really good with her hair down, and can pass off as Mio's younger sister or a "mini-Mio"
- Listening to the 3 play a simple tune near the end was enjoyable. Jun definitely has potential once she learns more. Ui in the same boat but she learns quickly. (See below.)
- Watching the "other side" of the story of the last episode while the seniors were away on a field trip was very enjoyable to watch what the three were up to while the seniors were away.
- Jun's joking that Mio, Yui, Mugi, and Ritsu gave up on the band was funny especially seeing Ui's and Azusa's reactions. Haha.
- Ui looks to be a natural talent and learns quickly-- very quickly. She has never played an instrument before but after seeing her sister teach her, Ui picks up right away. She has never played baseball before but after seeing the other kid teach his younger brother how to play, Ui hit a home run. She. Is. Good.
- Oh, let's not forget, the prank on Mio's desk! I would love to see Mio's reaction to that.
... Time to watch this again.

Anybody else notice the lack of background music for most of the episode? The series tagline must really be "nice episode, but needs more music".
The lack of music is used to enhance the melancholic feeling of the episode. If you notice, they used a raining sound noise for background noise for most of the episode to further support this effect.
Jun feels like the Ritsu of their group.
That might explain why I started to like her :D I was surprised that they managed to turn Jun from blank slate to quite interesting (and that's without me understanding the dialogue).

So, so far, only this, and "Drummer!" have been filler right?
Mt. Fuji.
Jun, your imagination is jacked up...
Yui leaves things as usual which are including camera and lunch box.
A little visit to 3-2.
lol Jun-chan is kinda like Ritsu.... but who'll replace Mugi...
lol Ui has a siscon... (YUI COME BACKKKK~)
How to play guitar with Azu-nyan DVD on sale!! no I'm kidding about that...
Jun-chan... i don't get that joke...
lol Ui makes food look like a buffet...
It's a trip... +1 point headshot by Mugi.
and Ritsu's joke of skulls won't work on Ui and Azusa...
Sleepwalking kick by Jun... she sleeps heavily...
Azusa... you always look like an anime figurine... can I buy you for $100?
lol Jun's hair is like a bush...
Ui's got fast learning skills... did you hack Yui's cyberspace for instant genius learning?!
What great luck for them to come to the Light Music room though...
Instant experts... those three...
Oh... I got it... that was when they went to Kyoto... and Yui just called to say that... she got lost...
The souvenir was a little different though... in manga afaik, it was a Kyoto pick... right now it was the "bu" hiragana keychain... and jet lag?

They always have jet lag. :heh:
It is a very nice episode, having the chance to look at the relationship between Jun, Ui and Azunyan.
So since Ui can play keyboards, she can be the keyboardist while Azusa and Jun work on Guitars.

What really gets me at the end is when Yui and Ritsu start making their usual excuses to Azusa's "let's practice!", Mio is just sitting there sipping her tea; even she has no hint of wanting to exert herself. How far the formerly responsible has fallen. :D
Jun looking like Yui
http://randomc.net/image/K-ON/K-ON!!%20-%2005%20-%20Large%2018.jpg
My favorite ep so far, man kyoani been on a roll with these anime originals. Season 2 sure is beating S1 for me. Jun feels like Yui + Ritsu with reduced power levels. Looking forward to future Jun eps.
Other Highlights
-Lol at the imagine spot, Serious HTT and Kick the can club were funny
-Just like Yui, Ui loves cute things ("Jun-chan Kawaii!")
-As Jun indulges tries to absorb Mio's residuual coolness, Ui get her Onee-chan fix. Also Ritsu plans well.
-Crying Ui is cute
-Jun's freshmen look like throw-away characters, unlike class 3-2
-Azusa's cute when she gets her ego stoked
-That hand stretching thing is hard, looks like they're having the trouble with with same part as I am:heh: (Jun, your jokes are lame)
-Jun speaks K-On bu motto "You can never have too many sweets":heh:
-What's with the forehead bumps this season, first it was Yui with the mic stand in the OVA, then its Yui and Mio, now its Azusa and Jun. Well its cute, so what.
-Jun really looks like Yui while sleeping, while Azusa looks like Konata
-Interesting how Yui takes the lead in Azusa imagine spots while Mio does in Jun.
-I seriously lol'd at that skull message:heh:. One week joke set-up success!
-Ui has Sharingan (and is cute)
-Seriously Azusa, Yui does one thing responsible and you go and forget about it:sad:.
-Nice jam session, pity they didn't show the hands (again). It's nice that hey Ui play the organ rather than the guitar, if only to stop her from copying Yui too much.
-Was waiting since last week's preview for that phone call from Yui:heh:
-See Yui and the other didn't forget you, Azusa. (This souvenir is better than the one from the manga which was just a guitar pick from Kyoto)
The preview: The return of meido Yui!!
On Jun joining the club: it just might be possible, especially since whoever the senior Jun admired will have graduated for sure next year.

Interesting side-story episode.
I haven't really gotten a feel for Jun yet. What I do know is that she definitely has the whole feel of the Light Music Club: lazy, loves sweets, sleeps a lot, lame jokes and good on the guitar. I see her leaving the Jazz Club for the LM club next year.
Text messages galore, more evidence that Yui and the team are having lotsa fun.
Ui seriously can't live without Yui. She's gonna have issues if Yui ever decides to truly grow up (which I guess is something that will never happen if Ui has anything to say about it). And is there anything she can't do? Guitars? No problem? Organ? Natural talent. Baseball? I'll manage. Must be a Hirasawa thing. Her crying was very touching. Looks like the relationship between the Hirasawa sisters goes very deep.
I was waiting for that phone call from Yui to Azusa.
Azusa with hair down = freakishly cute. The resemblance to both Mio and Konata are stunning.
I liked the matching souvenirs. Quite the heart-warming feeling I got from that.
Despite the filler parts, KyoAni seems to putting a LOT more effort in this season than last one, both in terms of comedy and character development. I hope they keep this up.

I need this. I fucking need this. There are 3 things we can conclude from this episode:
1. Azusa looks so lady-like with her hair down. Yes Saintess I said it.;)
2. I thought I saw Nagisa a few times in this.:twitch:
3. Jun's probably crazy.
These were the little slice-of-life bits season 1 could have really used if they decided not to have music-centric episodes. The three of them playing together in the K-On club room was a nice heartwarming scene.
And yes Azusa should start putting her hair down.

The jam session seems to be a premise to a "Juniors" character CD of sorts.
I think everyone was waiting on Yui's phone call to Azusa, but I forgot that it was in the last day (which was Sunday) at night.
Also I thought I saw either 2 Yui's an a Mio, or another Ritsu, Yui, and Mio. Azusa might as well be a dark-haired Konata, because she's way too short to be Mio XD.

my theory about Azusa having a new club members that acts exactly like mugi, ritsu and Yui might happen next year....
Ui = Mugi
Jun = Ritsu
Azusa = Mio
Random girl(Transferee) = Yui

And I thought that Ui has got a crush on that baseball guy!!:heh::heh:

Now that I rewatched this ep, I definitely see the resemblance between Ritsu and Jun. The rolling headbutt was fun.

Contemplate suicide?
Then again, that would mean she'd leave Yui all by herself and I don't think she'd like the thought of that either.

Only if Mugi continues to supply Azusa's Light Music Club with "cake".
Or the Jazz Club and the Light Music Club combine (because both need at least four members each, Jazz Club as at least three next year if those two freshman stay with Jun, and the Light Music Club has maybe two if Ui joins Azusa)
Ton-chan on drums?
Oh and I can see Ui commuting to whereever Yui is after club activities end to make sure she's eating and everything...if Yui doesn't still live at home with Ui.
That is if HTT doesn't meet at a different location for "practise, tea, and cakes" with Azusa.

I'm really enjoying this series so far. It's already surpassed the first, in my opinion. The characters are less one-note and the humour hits much more often. This week certainly wasn't as good as last week's episode - that seems to intentionally be the case, with Ui and Azusa hanging on Yui's every text. But it was good to see the little guys in the limelight for once. It's certainly the first time we've really gotten a sense of Jun's personality. And after their impromptu jam session, there's the suggestion that Ui and Jun will jump ship to the club next year.
Funniest moment this week? "Skull". It slayed me last week, and I really wasn't expecting to hear it again this week. I was hoping for a concert next week, but it looks like we'll be waiting a bit longer. If this series has been confirmed to be 20+ episodes, then that isn't really a problem.

Well so far there is no specific number so it really might be longer than 1st season^^
Interesting... in the space of about 30 seconds, they managed to move Jun-chan from being "just a cardboard minor character" to seeming to be a fully fledged out personality.
(around 8:20 onward). She's like this closet-Ritsu who'd like to be more like Mio but ... not happening.
They've done a pretty good job of creating a threesome with their own mix of eccentricities.
edit: and wow Azusa has an amazing waterfall of hair...

Nice episode. Jun is liked Ritsu. Ui is liked Yui+Mugi and Azusa is liked Mio. If they can find the new drummer they can form a new band. >_<

Aye, I believe she said "kokeshi" which are those little cylindrical dolls with long straight black hair with bangs (usually made of wood and painted).
The term is not always a compliment. I give the translator a pass... since the same can be said for anime figures (not always a compliment).
This is one of the very few series where I've found "anime-only" episodes actually add great value to the story.

As much as I love K-ON!!, the "story" is 90% girls being girls. In that context, I'm not sure what you'd classify as "filler". Besides, I thought the last anime-only episode (Ritsu trying new instruments) had some of the best character development AND musical focus of the entire series.

Well.. I didn't call it "filler" (maybe you were responding to someone else?). Just "anime-only" (meaning material not in the 4-koma). Kyoani is working with the mangaka on these episodes so, in effect its an opportunity for him to get things made that were either missed before or it just didn't fit into the constraints of 4-koma. This is the kind of 'anime-only' I appreciate (unlike some of the derails in Lucky*Star that were basically industry referential product promotion).

Well.. I didn't call it "filler" (maybe you were responding to someone else?).
Mm, I was referring to various other people who have called this episode and others "filler" in a pejorative way. It just seems an odd way of looking at things, as most "main" episodes of K-ON! would be considered filler in the majority of other shows. Doubly odd, considering the two "filler" episodes in this series have done more to develop the characters than most of the entire first series did.
They look like beginner guitars to me. Fender Squier perhaps?
Yep, looked like a Squier to me. I should know; I own one myself! Fittingly, I named mine Aki-chan, after Yui's voice actress. One of the pickups is slightly angled on mine, but otherwise Azunyan's was a dead ringer. And she had a blue one, too, the lucky thing! I had to settle for sunburst.

I Liked this episode lots! Jun has persionality! Her joke was funny, I must say~. How does Jun fall asleep that fast anyways? Their little jam session was fantastic. And ...there's a curse in the next episode? :l
It was funny seeing Azunyan's expression after daydreaming of what a more assertive Yui would be like.
Plus, I wouldn't like to see how sad Ui might have been at other times Yui may have went away - when there was no Azunyan or Jun to keep her company.
I can imagine Azunyan leaving her hair long once she graduates, or maybe if/when she takes over the band in her senior year.
Aye, I believe she said "kokeshi" which are those little cylindrical dolls with long straight black hair with bangs (usually made of wood and painted).

What Azu-nyan mentioned is not kokeshi but Nihon-ningyou(Japanese doll, the other name is Ichimatsu ningyou.)
Your knowledge about kokeshi is precise. Yes, it is made of wood and painted, do not have hair.
http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/2905/090519narukokokeshiokaz.jpg
Ichimatsu doll has black long straight hair.
"You look like Japanese doll." is expression to praise. It means that you are traditional Japanese beauty.
But......
http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/3199/ichimatsum.jpg
looks of Japanese doll is horror, especially at night. Japanese children often feel fear to it.
There are famous episodes "they have blood tear on their eyes every night" or "their hair becomes longer and longer every day" or more...
That's a reason Azu-nyan don't like this praise expression.
I guess Mio hates it more. XD

Wow, this episode was great had good bit of development for the trio, and plenty of Azusa and Ui cuteness, plus the set-up jokes from last week were amusing :heh:. Easily my favorite episode so far of season 2.
Though I still can't decide on if I like Asuza's hair down, or twintails cause both look so good on her . Also on ... I feel like Ui might become jealous of the attention Azusa gets from her sister after the desk crying scene, and Yui hugging Azusa a the end :uhoh:.
It's nice to see this episode involved the chracters normally in the sidelines rather than the normal 4. The combine azusa and ui is nice...
The "skull" joke was setup pretty well.
Also Yui's phone call to Azusa was timed well...I'd almost forgotten about it when she called.
Also can some kind soul identify what brand of guitar Asuza and the two freshmen used, as well as Jun's bass
Girl w/ the baby blue guitar is using a Planet Soldier guitar. At least that's what it said on the headstock. Looks like a Fender replica, which is why Squier comes to mind (it's a Stratocaster clone). Looks like that kind of guitar actually exists...in Japan anyways. Azunyan uses her Mustang in that scene, but it looks like she's also using a Planet Soldier later (can't really read it, but the branding looks similar). Same with the black (dark blue?) guitar the other freshman is using.
Don't know what Jun's using; it's not a Fender head stock, so it's not a Fender or a Fender clone.
just thinking......
the only way Jun is going to leave, if Ui joins as well......
my 2 cents......

Only if Mugi continues to supply Azusa's Light Music Club with "cake".
I suspect if do get to the point post graduation of the HTT four I believe we might get an anime original character.
Mugi has a ton of expensive stuff there I can see it as a hand me down if she has a little sister.
Don't know what Jun's using; it's not a Fender head stock, so it's not a Fender or a Fender clone.
It's a Yamaha bass. The body is similar to a RBX model, but the headstock looks as though it came from a Parker guitar. That said, that's definitely the Yamaha logo on the headstock itself.
Not bad for an episode that delivered an adequate character improvements for the junior trio. Seems like they really tried to negate their utter boredom while the main heroines were out of town and having fun.
Jun kinda reminds me of Ritsu without the full-energetic persona and ability to come up some humorous gags. Azusa, meanwhile, averts herself from being serious. She looks gorgeous on her hair down rather than her regular twin-tail. Ui stood out the most among them. She really cares for Yui with her mother-like figure, and I was amazed on her hax skills by just observing like Nanami from Katanagatari.
Also, what I liked from this episode was the presence of rain and its purpose, ensuring the mix of canon materials and original ideas. Hoping for some interesting events for the next installment.

Squiers aren't beginner guitars, though more towards intermediate. I own a Mut-tan scheme Ibanez GTX-140, and I must say the sound quality is better than that of a Squier.
If only I have enough money to get my hands on a Mustang (and that girl)......
Though I still can't decide on if I like Asuza's hair down, or twintails cause both look so good on her .
Well that's the "hime" side of her. At least it made her look like her "elder sis".
Also on ... I feel like Ui might become jealous of the attention Azusa gets from her sister after the desk crying scene, and Yui hugging Azusa a the end :uhoh:.
That's called siscon. And it takes one to behave and know another. :D
I suspect if do get to the point post graduation of the HTT four I believe we might get an anime original character.
Mugi has a ton of expensive stuff there I can see it as a hand me down if she has a little sister.
According to the DVD character profile, Mugi is an only child. Although, I don't think it's been stated outright in the show itself...
Ui's siscon doesn't seem to project towards defense against Azusa. When Yui drags Azusa off Ui's smiling seeing Yui happy.
On second thought, Asuza looks more like Shana than Konata.
YES! I always think that Azusa looks like Shana.
My favourite episode of Season 2 so far. It's nice to see the minor characters given a bit of personality rather than just being "there". And this episode might have just made Azusa take Mio's place as my favourite K-ON character.
Who tried to do the finger stretching exercise that Azusa did? :heh: It's ridiculously hard at first, but okay once you get the hang of it.
Also, skull.

The slice-of-life aspect really felt more natural in this season than the first thus far. Any drama doesn't feel forced either.
But yeah, the lack of BGM in this episode disturbs me after watching this a second time. Cutting costs?
Maybe the third years took the BGM with them to Kyoto.

No, no. I've seen yandere smiles before...they are much more unnatural and creepy in context. Maybe she's accepted Azusa as Yui's pet cat....or Ui wants threesome.

No, artistic decision. The lack of music reflects how empty the school seems and is a foreshadow of the daily hole in their lives to come after the seniors graduate. When the music *does* arrive, it is a metaphor about them "making their own BGM/music". Basically the episode is a foreshadow of the bittersweetness of life transitions.
There, that's enough film-making technique over-analysis for now :)

I married her! She's mine! Go away! :D
The thing about Mio is that she's the perfect sweet and pretty girlfriend every guy would fight for. Her "bijin" appearance is enough to draw suitors forming a line as long as the human combined DNA strand.
Her little sis is just the opposite, but incredibly cute and cuddly in appearance and character. So yeah, it depends on whether you are a lolicon or pervert what kind of girl you would find perfect in your dreams.

If you look closer, Mio is one that is steadfast to the people she cares about. Namely Ritsu (her love partner) and Azunyan (her fraternal sister) at the top of the list, then the rest of her bandmates.
So yeah, if you win her heart (currently held by Ritsu), she's a loving wife. Her looks are just a plus.

Well, we are discussing which of the girls will make the "perfect" girlfriend. After this and previous episodes, I am putting my bets on :
1. Azunyan (yes I am biased. So?:D)
2. Ui

6. Mugi (unfortunately, she's only interested in females)
7. Sawako

I hope we see more of Jun (the next episode preview gives me some hope), she was previously a forgettable minor character, but this episode shows that she has quite a few humorous quirks of her own.
By the sound of it you should just pay to have a maid, because that's pretty much all she is really.
Interesting, I find her unsetting for completely different reasons. Mainly as a talented older brother who got a very talented younger brother himself and thus has to work hard to keep the older brother "good example and pride" image intact. Talented younger brothers in anime always get in my nerves. Can't you just let your older siblings have an easy time steamrolling you? :heh:
While I do like Ui, I have to agree that she's a bit of a satellite character (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SatelliteCharacter), in that without Yui, Ui's existence in the show is meaningless. Even during this episode, Ui is still mostly defined by her sister. Heck, Jun is more of an independent character than Ui is. Although it looks like Kyoani is trying to move Ui slowly out of this, via introducing her as an organist, something that is finally not at all related to Yui.

Sure. From a personal experience, all the older sibling has to do is to play dirty. :heh:
I think Ui serves as a foil to Yui, who's totally dense, clueless, and dumb. I wouldn't be surprised if Ui plotted to kill her boyfriend if she ever gets one, then quote :

While Ui might be jealous of Yui's possible relationship, keep in mind that she would never try to hurt her sister either, so she'd just be happy for her and move on I think.
Ui is more like a mother than a sister to Yui. Probably caused by their actual parents being away so much.

That might explain why I started to like her :D I was surprised that they managed to turn Jun from blank slate to quite interesting (and that's without me understanding the dialogue).
It just goes to show how much of a difference giving a character actual screen time can make in the long run. This time we got to see more of her than just the err normal moments.
I highly doubt Jun will surpass people like Ritsu for me, but I find Jun decent enough as a character that her sharing screen time with others will be positive rather than a negative.
On another note, Ui about to cry after she's told Yui won't be back for a couple of days says everything that needs to be said.

You think?
This kind of behavior can lead to some pretty dangerous consequences later on.
She might not harm Yui directly but later on down the road she could do alot of harm without ever actually going near her. The implications are all there.
Ui is more like a mother than a sister to Yui. Probably caused by their actual parents being away so much.

If you pay for a maid to do all of this then it becomes their job. You have every right to expect them to do it.
If you expect the same out of a sibling, for free, well at one point or another it'll end up crossing the line into flat out using the person / taking advantage of them. Shit, this could lead to Yui becoming a hikkomori of some manner in the future. Wait until Ui starts going on dates or starts her own hobby or what have you. Shit could get ugly.
I mean we're just throwing stuff out here, and the show is cutesy fluff and all but if you actually do take things seriously you start to question things more.

This was great episode, got more insight into other characters, and perhaps potential new club members. Jun seem like a pretty cool character. I agree Asuza does look like Shana with her hair down. The running commentary on the main girls trip via text and pictures was funny, especially the return of "skulls", I was expecting "Lycopine" though.

This week in K-ON!!
- The background characters get their chance to shine! Okay, so Azu-nyan isn't really a background character (though, given that some folks have complained that she disrupts the band dynamics . . . your results may vary,) but Ui and Nameless Girl Jun are.
- Ui shows that she's got Yui's idiot-savant powers, only without the idiot part!
- Hot girl-on-phone action! Seriously, it's hot.
- Episode-to-episode continuity!
- "See how these two girls have nearly identical, blandly-generic features? These are redshirts. If an alien monster attacks from the Occult Club, let them handle it."
I liked it. The background characters got some real character development. And they had a jam session! Nine hungry, neglected Ton-chans out of ten.

LOL, I loved Azunyaa's "Nya!"
That just increased her moe meter through the roof,
screw that... the sky,
ok ok... maybe it's through the heavens...
Also, Ui is too "perfect" she hit a home run on her first time playing base ball... just by listening to what she should do...
Ui learn too fast, if she wanted, Ui could probably be one of the smartest person in the world, LOL.
And that "script"... haha... someone should totally draw up a pic of what they think it was happening...
Ui is basically a modern yamato nadeshiko with budding yandere impulses. She's a "perfect" modern girl (cooks, home econ queen, athletic, academic genius, musical savant, etc) and the stress of being perfect is building :)
Then again, its possible she's an alien :)
I have never seen Yamato nadeshiko in the real world.
Because such a Japanese doesn't exist since beginning.
It only exists as an ideal that doesn't actually exist.

I loved this eps. K-on has gone from a moefest in season one to a REALLY well produced slice of life series in season two. I've seen a lot of anime, but none that have threaded the little mundane details of the average day as well as this. The scenes where they get the random "skull" text and the phonecall from Yui looking for directions were so well done. They took me totally by surprise as they happened just the way they did for the characters, and Ui & Azu's reactions were perfect.
If Ui & Jun DON'T end up joining the club late in the season, it'll be such a waste of a perfect setup. You can see the potential between these girls and Azu makes a perfect bridge between them. The seniors have great chemistry and even if they go on to be OLs instead of rock & rollers, the next generation with Azusa's potential band could be launched into the spotlight by their sempai's lack of initiative. :D
I enjoy Kakifly's manga immensely, but KyoAni has plussed the heck out of this series as it's gone into season 2. :)
On a pure animation enjoyment level, I give this 10/10!

I throughly enjoyed this episode, maybe even more than the normal ones with the main cast.
As for the suggestion that Yamato nadeshiko types dont exist in the real world, i'd say that thats a little bit of an exageration, yes the characters in anime are at an extreme end of the scale but there are people out their that are like that.
One of the things that really struck me about this episode was that Ui, when it came down to is a mother, through and through she just doesnt have kids.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who has met girls that for whatever reason cant help but act like a mother so they end up treating their friends like kids, not in a bad or creepy way mind its just they sort of end up taking on that role.
One of my R.A's on college was exactly like that, my friends and I used to go longboarding and inevitably we'd do something stupid and hurt ourselves and she usually ended up patching us up (cause she had the medical kit).
I dont know its kind of hard to put in words but you always got that vibe from her, she was born to be a mother.
Thats basically how I see Ui, the moment that really brought it home in this episode was at the sleep over where Azusa was venting how she was worried she'd be left out because she's missed out on what she felt was a really important bonding experience.
Ui changed the subject then made the moment completely about Azusa, asking her what she wanted to do tommorow, that scene felt more like a mother cheering up her daughter rather than a girl cheering up her friend.

I agree that Ui gives off a motherly vibe, especially when she interacts with Yui. I suppose since their parents aren't home much Ui, being the more hard-working and less scatter-brained of the two, takes up the role of caretaker which might explain her personality.
Yui might as well call Ui Okaasan. :D

Ui changed the subject then made the moment completely about Azusa, asking her what she wanted to do tommorow, that scene felt more like a mother cheering up her daughter rather than a girl cheering up her friend.
Aye... know exactly what you mean... there's usually at least one "mom-peer" in many groups who does what a mom might do discreetly to make things better. That instance with Ui and Azusa was *exactly* the sort of moment.

Agree, that was a well done slice of Ui's personality being refined for the audience. Maybe the reason Yui is the WAY she is, lies at the feet of her younger sister? Azu will fall prey to her and find herself dependent on Ui to care for her... :naughty: More likely, Jun will begin to take advantage of Ui's willingness to be "supportive"... Jun has a little of the Ritsu in her I think, just as Azu has a bit of MioStyle in her as well...

If Azunyan ever has a child people are going to mistake their family as a single parent with a daughter and her sibling :heh:.

I actually know a least a few women that has happened to in real life.
Example: one of my wife's cousin who's even more Azusa-ish, when she was raising her first kid was always being told to "go get your mommy if you want to try the food sample" at the grocery store (she was in her mid-20s, kid was 3ish). She ranted quite a bit about it at a family gathering. Her husband has some interesting "cradle robbing glare" stories of his own over the years.

If Kyoani's going to push for a third season, I wonder if they're going to place Azu-nyan and her classmates at the helm instead of following Miyo and co continue their music until they reach Budokan.
Depends entirely on Kakifly and the author I suppose. So far many series seem more comfortable with swapping characters out rather than changing the setting. I keep rooting for some mangaka to be brave enough to *follow the damn characters* out the door from graduation.

Agreed, it would be interesting to see the original 4 post high school (though it'd probably become less popular, haha).. Not a lot of series go beyond that territory (could be wrong).

The only thing I can think of why we rarely see post-high school anime may be that any and all girls featuring in it would become full-fledged adults and thus might become less 'desirable'.
Still, there is so much potential for this particular series, given the overlap with music and the girls' desire to keep the band going well past high school and into college, it would be an enormous waste to leave a goldmine like that untouched.

It would be interesting to see what happens next, whilst I can see most of the girls going to univeristy I really cant imagine Yui going, having said that I cant really see her starting a band on her own, she doesnt have the drive to do it.

I wonder if it would be possible to both follow the main four on to the university, and also have Azusa, Ui and Jun as regular characters, keeping up the light music club. Or maybe that just result in a big mess.
But even if the story sticks to Yui, Mio, Ritsu and Mugi (hmm, in these kind of discussions maybe there would be practical to have a specific nickname referring to the four of them only...), Ui would be bound to show up quite often anyway.

This was the best episode of the season - and four of the five main characters were MIA throughout. There is something wrong with that. I did love how Ui learned how to bat so easily, guess that family are hidden geniuses or something. :heh:

Major (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_(manga)) is actually doing this, it follows the main char from elementary all the way into the Major Leagues.

Call them the Core Group, the Original Four, or the Core Four :)
Lucky*Star seems to be bopping around reasonably well handling 2 to 3 groups of people in a 4-koma context (basically bringing in whoever makes the joke funny, etc). Part of the interest in following the original four would be the obstacles in making the band work if they don't go to the same university (though I can see Mio ending up at Tokyo U. and the rest ending up at a music/arts school nearby... unless they talk Mio into "following her heart" instead of her pragmatic brain).
Mio wouldn't want to be lonely.

I don't see what they did that was in any way the least bit remarkable or exceptional in this episode and actually I'd still pretty much call it a moefest. Well okay the animation is still above average, but I mean really can I expect something a little more out of this than that Kyoani/Kakifly? Probably not.
Speaking of expectations, looks like next week I might get to tick off yet another notch on my All Girl Slice of Life episode plot checklist. That would probably complete it if it turns out to be the case.
K-On is either an amusing, cute, relaxing show to watch or plain boring.. Unfortunately, this episode was rather boring... and not because of the characters but content.
I wouldn't call it boring, just run of the mill to fault. If you have the pedigree of having watched even one All Girl Slice of Life series before this one and an inability to block out of memories of the previous one it's going to feel all too familiar.....just with the forced moe ratcheted up far higher than the volume of the music they are playing. That's the only thing I can see character wise that differentiates this from any All Girl Slice of Life series seeing as how the characters really have no personality or gravitas to call their own. It looked like they were going to have some extended character development in the very first episode of the first season (or at least like the show was building in that direction), but it almost seemed like they shifted gears quickly and we have what we have now.
That reminds me of the manga chapter where Yui called Ui 'onee-chan' in front of Nodaka. :heh:
Did like the episode a lot, can definitely see a split focus narrative between the older and younger members a la Lucky Star.
I don't see what they did that was in any way the least bit remarkable or exceptional...
Do you have kids? If you do, have you ever watched them play without noticing you in the room? DO you remember being 15? Do you recall all the inane little stuff that mattered and seemed interesting or amusing before you "grew up" and became cynical and jaded? That's what this eps was about.
I have watched a LOT of anime over my years and I personally haven't seen anything that has taken the tiniest details and shown them from multiple people's perspectives as this did, up until now... if there is a show that has done it (and don't say Suzumiya Haruhi) I'd like to go watch it...

What tiny details? Like what are we even talking about here? Again I'm still not seeing anything remarkable or exceptional being pointed out to me about this episode.
As for shows that do the multiple people's perspectives and incidental details, I'd say that Durarara is doing a much better job at that sort of thing and gets a huge plus for actually keeping things interesting. Then again that show actually has different things going on each week other than just girls being girls. The problem is yet again that I have just seen this concept presented by K-On done to death, and K-On alone is taking a concept that has already been run into the ground as of late and is driving it right to the center of the Earth at mach speeds.
You're calling up these "everyday life" things like it's supposed to be something special or unheard of in anime, but it really isn't and I don't understand why people praise this sort of stuff like it's exceptional since there's practically an entire sub-genre of the slice of life genre dedicated to it. In fact there's even another show this season that I would say is milking the concept in Working! K-On practically does the "everyday life" thing every single week except it's a really idealized, escapist and cutesy picture of life, the same one I see in pretty much ever All Girl Slice of Life show.
Again just doing "everyday life" is not going to cut it for me in terms of getting praise or me calling it anything other than run of the mill since I've seen it so many times by now in many different shows, sometimes in ways that challenge me as a viewer to focus and channel my interest towards the actions of the characters and sometimes not. If this episode was supposed to inspire something in me then it failed miserably at that as well.
Anyway until I see this show actually do something that sets it apart I'm probably going to have the same comments every week.

And in other news, Isreal and Palestine reach a historic peace agreement, Suu Kyi's democratic party topples the Junta and Kim Jong Il is really a sock puppet.

What I'm trying to say is I can't go lumping praise at every show just because it hits the pars of the genre.

I've never really understood why you even watch this series. Including the OVA, we're, what, 20 episodes into the series as a whole now? 21? Like it or not, man, this is how it's going to be, forever and ever. It's just a moe slice-of-life show with some fun music and its heart in the right place. It isn't ever going to be more than that, and neither does it need to be. Your problem isn't with the particulars of the series; it's with the series itself: with its goals, its tone, its audience. I can't imagine you ever actually enjoying an episode, and if you do, it'll be with a wry smile and a reluctant admission that Kyoto Animation somehow squeezed a drop of quality blood from their worn out stones.
So why stick yourself in this rut every week? Despite the slightly confrontational tone of this post, I really am interested. I barely have the time to watch shows I enjoy, let alone those I know are going to let me down. I can only assume you enjoy cultivating your supposed superiority by telling us we're wrong, that we shouldn't be enjoying something unless it's bravely redefining a medium. But really, bud, there's a line where criticism becomes cynicicm and you just start sounding like a dick.

Really enjoyed seeing things from the side characters' view. Yeah, you have to feel for Ui when she realizes her oneesan's not coming home for a while. And again, I also liked how Jun was fully developed in such a short period.
And Vexx's description of Ui was spot-on for me; a developing Yamato Nadeshiko and possible yandere. In a way her relationship with Yui is similar to that of the Hiiragi twins in how she deeply depends on her big sis, though it's interesting here in that Ui's obviously the more competent one...and yet she's still somewhat emotionally dependant on Yui. She's still the imouto in that sense.
And of course Shana comes to mind with Azunyan.
Anyway, about that last scene where they were playing with the hiragana (?) characters that make up the word K-On. At one point Ritsu rearranged the letters and said it was the name of "a demon that lives in the Tohoku region", among other things. Was that wordplay accurate?
PS: Yamato Nadeshiko is obviously an archetype, but according to TVTropes, Audrey Hepburn came pretty close.

Cool weather-altering powers for the junior trio. In another series, they'd be playing the bugle and trumpet, piloting mecha and stopping wars with their song.
