I'll just talk about how Kawamori is a troll and everything he does sucks because of his troll-y trollage. That should make everyone happy, right?
Well, at least you finally saw the light. :p
Some of his ideas seem like they were made while he was high...
- Tak
The same goes about 80% of the Anime premises, though. ;)
Well, at least you finally saw the light. :p
Just remember, at the end of that tunnel... it is I who is holding the latern... :naughty:
... and I might come with the Sheryl dress...

Ooooh~ Nice. :D
But triangler_fans1, I'm confused. You always used to say you loved Ranka but did not despise Sheryl.
Do true colors come out when the end (MacF) is near? :p

I see everyone is getting ready for the movie XD
If I have to hate a certain character (bad guy doesn't count), then that person would be Alto XD...his indecisive creates the all those talking-in-circle debates from both camps...I am not willing to blame on both sides (since I am also in it XD) so poor Alto would take the blame :D
I am probably going to watch the movie twice when it comes out on DVD, the first time as a pure macross fan, and the second time as a die-hard Ranka fan, if the movie has a Ranka ending XD
...I'll be sitting on my hopeless Sheryl/Ranka corner here. ;)
Although I wouldn't be oppose to any of the pairings, as long Sheryl gets a good ending since she's my favorite.

I am just eager to find out the ending...that's all...it's not like I will go nuts if Ranka doesn't get Alto XD
it's been 3 years (?), that's nothing more I can say/spin if the staff doesn't give me my favorite ending...sure I might not like it, but I respect the staff and frankly they have the right to do what they want
besides, the framework of MF is pretty good...I am pretty sure that the 2nd movie will have a great plot and numerous fabulous action scenes
So, in conclusion, on one side I want my Ranka ending, but on the other side, I just wanna enjoy the movie as a macross fan!! :D
P.S I am pretty sure those 3 will get a good ending...doubt they will get killed XD (And I don't think Alto will lose any part of his body, his piloting skill in the movie seems to be better--but I would rather be on Brera's plane to be honest :heh:)

I really want to fly to Japan immediately :'(
It's no way I should wait about one year again to know the ending :'(

You know, sometimes getting the pairing is "be careful what you wish for." Like, dunno, Vaan and Hitomi who Kawamori split worlds apart after everything they went through! :frustrated:
Picture Alto choosing Ranka, only for her to morph into Queen Vayra and fly off without him (those winged outfits were foreshadowing and the title of the movie is not just about the song!). Who the hell knows. Since it has a connection to Zero, out of all Macross, I'm very wary. Mao did get the best deal, even if she didn't win Shin's heart.
I'm only asking a moderately sane, hopeful/happish ending for Sheryl. And Klan Klan/Michel to happen and stay alive, but I'm not setting my hopes up for the latter.

like I said, if Kawamori decides to change Ranka into Vajra, or Sheryl into space dust, after 3 years of thinking and planning, there is nothing I can do or say XD
but surprise ending doesn't mean the movie isn't good...I don't think MF can go major wrong since the setting and framework of MF are pretty solid (and escaflowne is a great series by the way)
and, well, if we really don't like the movie ending, at the very least, we can go back to embrace the TV ending XD (tho personally I...well, I should give myself some breathing room, so let's wait for the spoiler !! :heh:)
Like I said earlier, I love Kawamori's premises (as drug-induced some might be ;) ), his development/execution, but I rage at the conclusion in some way. Yet I take the bait and let him hook me with his stuff. I have a problem. Seriously. :heh:
You know, sometimes getting the pairing is "be careful what you wish for." Like, dunno, Vaan and Hitomi who Kawamori split worlds apart after everything they went through! :frustrated:
I had no idea Kawamori was the one who dealt the blow with Escaflowne's OTP. Oh dear, I feel the stirrings of that Teenage Rage bubbling up once again. :heh:
I do recall fans holding their breaths whether Van and Hitomi would kiss at least once before the movie premiere. (Well, it's certainly a good consolation prize after the ending.) In the end, not only did it not happen, but if memory serves me right, the director, who I know now to be Kawamori, mention something along the lines of 'They don't need to kiss because their True Love is enough." :heh: Fun times!
Apparently common courtesy has no meaning to you.
Well, Tak, there's nothing wrong with saying you hate a character. You can, however, direct your etiquette on board the HMS Skull Fairy Ship and proceed to do your crew duties as outlined:
1) Join Cabin Boy Westlo as he wipes the deck because it seems he really has nothing else to do in his spare time.
2) See the ship counselor Natsu for your daily medicine, simply because I want to see how Two Crazies function together.
3) A reminder to wash the Sheryl Dress. It has been four years, after all.
I didn't like their movie relationship at all (it's still a pretty movie with amazing mecha), so that wasn't any consolation for me (movie =/= tv series with characterization. How could I forget Evil!Folken and non Serena!Dilandeau?).
Therefore, I doubt he will end the triangle on a perfect note for the "winner".

Well, as long as no one tries to play thought-police, we are courteous enough.

I just saw episode eight of Puella Maga Madoka Magika from a group called "Nutbladder". There are two adds for the movie in there. Pretty standard fare, but lovely animation. No clue from them what will be in the movie, plot-wise, although one scene kinda looks like Ranka confessing to someone. Or maybe she just talks to a friend or whatever. ^^
Don't download the episode for just those adds, you'll spoil yourself for the series, which is freaking fantastic. Watch the other episodes of that series first, in case you are that desperate to see some seconds of movie two clips. ^^

My finger was so heavy on my mouse, wondering if I should see the spoiler (I thought it was about the LT...) and then I clicked...and wow, that was unexpected @_@ Somehow, my view of the movie have changed. No matter how sad it is, I'm still happy this character actually got some development for better or for worse, I always thought the whole series was too focused on the 2 girls.
My first thought was truly: "damn, 'like the title'? The wings are about both Sheryl and Ranka, so we are loosing both of them?!" In the end, it was only about Alto on his own, I believe though that there must be some 'good' reason for that to happen? He chose to keep something and had to sacrifice something else in return I suppose...

but if it were true, then so be it. it's not a really bad idea to see Alto stop flying, which I guess, then he may as well go back to kabuki way. isn't this rather a Sheryl ending-ish? cause Alto and Sheryl have things in common in singing and playing kabuki. me just hoping.

Ahahaha. :D Yeah, man, it's amazing how upset one can still get at the, IMO, botched ending of an amazing series, even if I watched it last time about five years ago.
Well, it's tinged with bittersweet nostalgia, so it's easier to take it now, not like, say, the current episode of Madoka from today, which left me going OMGWTFNOOOOOOO!!!!. :frustrated:
Oh dear, did I bring nostalgia rage by mentioning Escaflowne?

it just immpossible not to choose right?...except he is a gay:uhoh:
but 1 thing for sure....to choose something is to lose something.....
meh alto's line to choose is to lose always struck me as that part in the movie where he will stay in frontier and fight the vajra while ranka goes off to be the enemy of the universe. and if it does happen, i called it! mwahaha. 'sides, the movie hasn't aired anywhere, unless your friend has a premonition skill, his joke didn't really fly.

That pretty much sums up my feelings I had back then. They are still the same, but time scabs over most wounds.
It ranks pretty high on my list of most traumatic experiences in fiction, since at that time I was expecting Hollywood happy endings from every work of fiction. By now such endings are something I always expect from anime, although Frontier caught me absolutely flat-footed, I admit.
Alright guys, let's stay on topic now.

Well, as Tak explained elsewhere, the writer isn't important, the director is the one resonsible for all the major decisions, so he should take the blame. And Kawamori was not the director. :)

And Kawamori was not the director. :)That said, a writer can have a major influence on how something is represented. IIRC, Yocchin was the one responsible for the 'non-resolution' in the Frontier TV series...
And I'm guessing you might be off soon if not already - enjoy!
(Now, let's see if I can avoid this thread til I watch it myself...)
@Yot-Chan : Mmmm, my apologies for the mix-up.
It's amusing to see how many people here bore the scars of the Escaflowne ending though. :heh: Well, we've bonded over much stranger things before.
@cheesie-is that JGS in your avvie!! Nice niiiice avvie!!
Hah, GOOD EYE. Yes, it is the glorious JGS in the flash. I fell for him in YaB, because not only could his acting chops unceremoniously reduce me to squealing fits, but my goodness, those eyes - they smolder through your screen. This is what happens when you introduce JGS to eyeliner. :heh:
Though, lately, he comes dangerously close to being dethroned by Park Shi Hoo from QoR. Oh, how fickle you are, heart. :upset: (I curse the day when I got dragged into the Korean wave, because now, I'm addicted and can't stop watching, damn it.) Edit: JGS, you slay me (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_o4I0skPGvsY/TSMTaHrP4nI/AAAAAAABYxM/YDA6e-rEy5o/s1600/pigrabbit.jpg).

Personally, I'm not expecting any outlandish love confessions in the end - I'm thinking a somber ending, if not bittersweet, in which there's a confession somewhere in the middle, which puts the triangle quickly to rest, before the characters run off to battle and one of them is NEVER AGAIN TO BE SEEN. Alto gets stabbed and dies, Sheryl disappears and Ranka pulls a Minmay.
Perhaps they'll even leave a baby in the end. (Macross Frontier 2?) :p

I was expecting that after the interviews stated it was kind of bittersweet? (not like the tv series where everyone lived happily ever after -except Michel, of course-). But at least Ranka, Sheryl and Alto will be present in the LAST scene. Maybe they'll go MIA, who knows.
Maybe Ranka and Sheryl announce Alto that they've realized that they didn't need a girly-looking man, but a real woman and fly off together. :heh:

Well, unless he stops being totally psychotically overprotective of Ranka, I tend to agree. Movie Ozma assuredly has been less cool than TV series Ozma.

not true actually, the director isn't the be all end all of any series they direct. A writer can in fact have just as much if not more power over the story than the director. After all they are the ones actually "writing" the story.
An example is a stupid one but, in Digimon Adventure 02 they had a lot of writers who could not see eye to eye on the direction of the show, as each one wanted the story to follow their own planning, and as such the story was all over the place, and even though the director for both the first and second season was the same, the head writer(s) were not.
Then in the sequel Digimon Tamers was directed by Yukio Kaizawa the one who ended up having the most say in the sequel was the head writer Chiaki J. Konaka.
Anime is made from the collective work of many people with the director as the head, however it doesn't mean that the input of the others doesn't have anything to do with the end product. That being said a writer is the one who makes the story itself while the director is the one who tells the story, which is why you sometimes hear critisisms for various anime, tv series, and movies which point out that even though they like/dislike the story told, but hate\love the way the story was told.
But back on topic with the movie, I agree with Thess I did feel more sorry for Ranka in the movie. Ozma just came across as having a sister complex to me. I also felt sorry for Cathy in the first movie as well.

It's because at least Brera isn't as old to be her father. He also didn't have authority over Ranka (she was kind of bossing him around?), while Brera does (no matter she fights back, there's a creepy power-dynamic element in there).
I also like Brera/Ranka, TV series wise, I think (besides Sheryl), he's far more suitable with her as partner. Now... pity he's her brother.

According to those who seen the movie. The movie ended with an Alto x Sheryl ending, but rather bittersweet. It is not a totally happy ending. Sheryl at the end, is recovering from a coma, but she eventually recovers and is taking care of Alto. Ranka is fine, no scratches. Alto actually rejected Ranka in the movie and told her flatout that he loved Sheryl.

Ugh. Yeah, that's the rumor posted above. Which is the other rumor?

That's kind of... better, since Sheryl's not in a coma FOREVER! If it's true, it kind of confirms my belief whoever lost the triangle = will be unscathed like Mao Nome was.

So there are already spoilers for the movie?
I'm not sure if i want to read them or not but i just have one question:
was the triangle really resolved? and if yes, what was the decision?
Thanks in advance for the answer :)
I am relieved they didn't pull another cop-out like in the series.

I can't find it either. I took a peek at 2chan and I spotted some comment he died? Maybe he didn't die and recovered after-credits (which would be a typical troll thing to do, but...).

@ Thess I don't really think that it was about Sheryl losing any marketing appeal or not, considering that some of the most popular anime characters are in relationships. Also from what I've seen not many of the Sheryl fans seem to mind Alto as it's kinda like a Yuri couple anyway.

I didn't mean the marketing appeal of the general audience, but the Macross one. Taking into account that all the other famous idols in Macross, aren't in relationships (Sharon Apple, Basara, Mylenne, Minmay), that kind of thing.

It's... not about "other anime" it's about how I observed it's treated in Macross, you know? How it has been approached since the first series. Why else wouldn't anyone give a clear resolution to the Macross 7 triangle? After all these years... Zero had the luck that neither Sara nor Mao were super commercialized, they sang, but not in a we sell CD way. Myung wasn't a star, Sharon, on the other hand...
This is a little controversial, but I hardly consider Ranka songtress material (TV series wise, she has yet to live her own hype in this aspect), as far of unique musical range (too many covers, not enough songs on her own penmanship). Sheryl's style is more unique, IMO, in Macross world. She's certainly the one who sells more CDs too, among fans. Ranka is a bit like Mylenne, without the luck of being in a band to stand out, and a bit like Minmay (who was the first). Ngl, I think they work the best in duets.
Obviously, this movie could change my opinion about Ranka. I didn't think she was going to win the triangle. I said it in the romantic thread, the real contender for Sheryl/Alto is Sheryl the Pop Star Glam. Not Ranka Lee. That's my opinion, you can disagree, obviously! :p

That's just the thing even though they weren't heavily commercialized there were songstresses in Macross that did "get the guy" so to speak. Even though Sharon Apple was heavily commercialized in Macross Plus itself, wasn't it Myung song "Voices" that we the viewers heard the most? Same thing with Sara, who was the songstress Zero, the only difference was that Zero was never heavily commercialized though it doesn't change the fact that the songstress from that series did "get the guy".
You have every right to that opinion, but unfortunately it's also true that Ranka was much more commercialized than Sheryl was during the airing of the tv series. At the end of the day whether we like it or not, she was the one with the most promotional material, when compared to Sheryl. Heck just look at the Ranka Official Book in comparison to Sheryl's much smaller Visual Collection (even though the Sheryl collection sold more). Ranka is the one that the marketing team seems to put more time, effort, and money into promoting. The in universe example is also unfair considering that Sheryl had been around much longer in series than Ranka, and so her albums selling more were a given.
The ending being Sheryl/Alto doesn't surprise me as I expected it from the tv series, I've already posted my various reasons it makes better sense. Though back on topic with the movie I kinda also expected the same conclusion out of the movie as well simply because of the set up they gave Ranka in the movies.

Myung's Voices is amazing (my favorite macross song, in fact), but it's still Sharon Apple, who has no strings attached, who is the POP IDOL. Sara and Mao (who ended up being the songtress in the end) don't sell CDs with their songs and, IIRC, don't join those anniversary CD promos (Minmay singing with Basara and Mylenne, for instance, and now Ranka and Sheryl).
I don't think they promote Ranka more (now, at least, in the beginning? Unquestionable, they tried to make her more popular but Sheryl ended up overshadowing her- which is my point). They just have to make more effort to sell her stuff, while with Sheryl, they don't have to? She'll sold out whatever it is.
The Sheryl/Alto ending was obvious (a triangle in Macross involving a young woman and a young-coming-of-age girl who even looks younger than she is... in my Macross! Oh my, who will "win"? :eyespin:). It's even hinthint nudgenudge in a magazine interview? All the tongue-in-check commentary that If Ranka's sending a plot message, what would Sheryl's role be? Oh, maybe she's the romantic lead...! :heh: I still maintain it boils down to Sheryl/Alto vs Sheryl's glam as single idol... and the ending from the rumored spoilers seems to deliver exactly to cover both bases.

But that doesn't change the fact that they are all the songstresses of their series. While Sharon Apple was the image Myung was the song, besides that Sharon Apple also doesn't appear in that CD does she? I think them appearing the the CD had more to do with other reasons, and wasn't dependent on their role as being the singer of their series.
Oh trust me they did, during the original airing of Macross Frontier Ranka did have more pictures than Sheryl, who only seemed to get more pictures after they realized that she was more popular. In series though Ranka overshadowed Sheryl, but to quite a few viewers Sheryl overshadowed Ranka in terms of song, love, and characterization. Irony is funny is it not?
Yeah the love triangle was always pretty one-sided in the tv series, I mean Alto only reacts to Ranka in the tv series only once, and there's no follow up after that, Ranka pretty much just loses touch with him. I mean even the promotional material used to show Alto and Sheryl in romantic situations or poses, while Ranka was just depicted as either a person to be saved, or as the little sister. (eg: there is one picture with Alto in Ranka's room, but its far from romantic as Ranka is wearing what looks like an animal suit. In said picture Ranka was drawn younger, so much so that my friends thought that she was Alto's little sister. Said picture was one of the last promotional materials for the tv series.

Would you mind if we move this to the romance thread? So we won't be scolded about our out of topic-ness? ;)

Nah, it's quite obvious that Ranka was their (okay, the maker's) main selling focus. At first. Or rather, in TV series period. Announcement on her (or rather, NakaMegu) audition result publicated and hyped to max? Check. Ranka being the face of Macross' advertisements (this is at least at first)? Check. Her Seikan Hikou having so much impact when episode 13 first appear? Whooo, checkie. It's pretty obvious that before Sheryl's episodes really impacts us (not in 5, I'm talking about 12-14), Ranka was advertised as the "Real main girl. Got it memorized?" to the point that it tickles my funny bones a bit remembering it now. :heh: No offense on Ranka fans here, I'm just putting whatever I remembered from those days ~w~ Seriously, the only thing that advertised DC single was that emotional episode 6. Seikan Hikou got so many Kira DANCE~ going on that I wanna cry.

Funny that you mentioned this. 'Cause I totally was in love with Ranka since episode 1 of the TV series, because she was just so cute. And hated Sheryl very, very much, because she seemed like a b*&ch. However, when she (as in Ranka) started to become popular, I stopped liking her altogether. From episode 14 on, if I remember correctly, Sheryl just stepped up from my least favorite character to my most favorite.
I don't know why it happened. Maybe because before when I didn't like Sheryl, her celebrity reputation didn't really affect anyone around her badly, she even uses it to help others (Ranka mainly, giving her hope and advice). But with Ranka, her becoming a singer ruined Sheryl's life (ruin is a strong word to use here, but I don't know how else to call it). Not only that, Ranka kept saying that singing is her dream, but most of the time, while she sings, it looks like it always about Alto-kun, Alto-kun...and that annoyed me to no end. Sheryl, on the other hand, like the text on this movie poster 'singing is her life' and she never really mix her feelings for Alto and her love for music together.
Good thing that Ranka is a little more mature in the movie than TV series

Seems like the spoilers are pouring down.
So in the end
Kawamori resolved the triangle with Alto choosing Sheryl, and then Alto goes MIA (http://twitter.com/Melodymix) = confession followed by *eternal?* separation? OUCH! >.< That really hurts kawamori! D:
So the one with the good ending is Ranka? Because she will eventually grow out of her crush for her childhood friend after accepting that Alto didn't chose her and had someone else in his heart, and find another love and eventually live on happily with that guy, while Sheryl waits for her beloved who might never come back...? But since there is 'Hope' he might appear one day, it's officially not a 'bad' ending? But when a character is declared MIA in Macross, we never see that character ever again as far as I remember! D:

So...
Based on how it's end...
Is it possible to create an OVA or some sequel?
Maybe the enemy still alive etc...
Or is it really end?
Oh yeah ... And how many new robot is there besides durandal alto?
New ozma armored? New macross quarter, new konig monster?
My gosh, in a few hours, this thread exploded.
So yes, the general consensus seems to be that the movie ended with a definite Alto x Sheryl pairing, although tinged with the expected factors : Someone disappearing, someone comatose, and the third party left the only one standing. Oh, why am I not surprised?
If all the spoilers of the above are true? I love it. I love it. That the only way to resolve a fiery love triangle and still have the flame burning is to overshadow it with an epic ending that will have people talking about it for years to come - this takes guts. The chances of a sugar-happy ending are very, very low, however, if all this is true, then this trade-off is more than welcomed.
Here's crossing fingers that it's all true.

It's what I feared:
The "winner" got a nasty shaft while the "loser" (both terms used loosely) was unscathed and continued on like in Macross Zero.
Sheryl's in a coma. Alto's MIA.
I read around blogs Ranka comments that if Alto returns, she'll wake up (or so she hopes. Aww, Ranka, you so cute). So it's a bittersweet ending.
Unfortunately for me, I'll rather have Sheryl unscathed than with Alto. Sadly, she didn't lose in love.

It's Escaflowne all over again just worse because here we apparently don't know what happened to Alto, damn.
Now the question is, Which version of the story will become canon in the Macross universe, the TV series or the movies? right now I would prefer the tv series tbh
I actually found the ending beautifully bittersweet. :)
A happy ending is what everyone probably expected, given the series. I say it's a nice contrast. And as cheesie mentioned, the ending will be talked about for years.
It takes guts to do what they just did. I mean, it was a huge risk.

Both are canon. They are alternative retellings. Same with the Manga, by the way. And the light novels (that, TV series wise, ended in a sound threesome).

Yes, Thess, but in the end, more than a sugar-happy OTP ending, the couple would no doubt leave a searing imprint on the fans' minds for a very long time - it works for me, because it keeps the door open. It leaves things hanging, with the real possibility that they would be reunited in the end, and most probably, they will. It pretty much says that the story between them is still ongoing even though the franchise is officially over - and during this time, people will talk about it, and will continue to do so. No doubt they'll become one of Macross's most defining flagship points in history. ;)
Like I said, I love it.

The problem is that I like Sheryl Nome more than I like Sheryl/Alto, you know? I like the pairing, don't get me wrong, but not at the expense of her spending a life in coma for the sake of being memorable in a romantic way.
Manga and TV series will probably provide her a happier ending. At least Sheryl's not bedridden there. That's uplifting.

I'm torn. It's a really romantic and pretty way to put things, they're lovers that well be united in the end, their love transcends condition or something like that. But I want my lovey dovey moments animated naow!I want to see those two walk around in public as a couple and go on more dates!
So, I suppose in one way it's a good way to leave a legacy, in another it feels lacking. So I want some OAVs or something or at least a little something that will ensure that lovers are united in the end.

Well maybe
Canon is not the word I would use, continuity is better.
I know every Macross F version is official and canon in some way but which continuity will they use for the next Macross project?
Like if they make a new series or Ovas and make a reference to frontier or the characters, of course they can avoid that but it would be strange since normally they always mention something.
For example in frontier they talked about Basara, Mao, Minmay, the protodevilns, etc. so in the next project if they mention Sheryl will they say that she is in coma or awake?
I know I'm getting too far ahead thinking about the next Macross when this movie just premiered, but since the 30 anniversary is not that far away, i'm just curious

I was supposed to be studying, but this thread is way more entertaining~
Based on spoilers from MelodyMix and here, I find the idea of Alto's disappearance and Sheryl's sleep strangely romantic. I mean, Alto's more than likely gone for good, but the idea that they're still connected in such a way that Ranka has hopes for Sheryl to wake up when Alto returns... it's cute, the three are still connected in some manner (versus the "you both are my wings!" ending of the TV series), and I wouldn't expect something less from Kawamori for this movie.
I like the idea of the bittersweet ending. I think if the triangle were resolved ina cutesy fashion, it wouldn't feel as...well, as satisfying as an ending, I guess? I'm very pleased with the ending so far, based on what I've heard. Whether or not my opinion stays the same when the movie comes out on BD/DVD in a year is a another story. :heh:

The princess

Damn, my Klan prediction turned out to be wrong. Or maybe Sheryl was wearing Klans scalp as a trophy? :eyespin:
Anyhoo... as to the spoilers, that is why I am happy that the story of the second movie veered off so decisively from the series. Or did it? At the moment it seems everybody is focusing on the end of the triangle alone, but nobody is even talking about what actually happened in the movie. In any case, differend continuities, different endings, different destinies for our heroes. Let's see what is canon in the next Macross series.
But while I am happy for a resolution of the triangle in the movie, I think we can now safely say that, yes, Kawamori is a troll. Unless Yot-Chan comes here and sets us right and all the spoilers about Alto being MIA and Sheryl in a coma were just other trolls by fans. In which case I'll take this latest accusation back, of course.
Can we now finally get an OVA for the TV series with a proper resolution, pretty please? Without a bittersweet cherry on top?
Yot-Chan, you could confirm whether this is true or not. :)
In the meantime, from Krespy's spoiler (unverified) Thanks Natsu!
Apparently, Alto was attacking the Queen Vajra with the Frontier Fleet, but it seems he couldn't escape from the attack barrage from Frontier. After that, Alto's fleet dispersed/exploded on the palm of the Queen Vajra's hand, and at that moment, Alto confessed to Sheryl...
...and it seems to have played a role in Sheryl's coma? (This is totally unverified, Yot-Chan have to confirm this.)

...Macross tends to 'mix' stuff. Like Flash Back (which is what we last seen of the original triangle) takes both continuities together (basically because DYRL Minmay I assume). Same with the Nyan Nyan clip.
Kawamori changes his stance from all are "fictional takes" of what happened or or are "alternative continuities and canon on their own" tune. So... I wouldn't worry about it? Stick with your preferred version. ;)

This is why I ask about the earrings. Alto accidentally got in Sheryl's head thanks to it. Do we know if they are wearing it in their last (conscious) moments?
It's possible that Ranka senses this, via the third-party connection with them.
I feel very bad on her behalf. She lost her best friend (crush or not, that's what Alto is in absence of Nanase) and she lost her other potential best friend. I feel a bit of sadness the three of them are in separated paths. Even if Ranka hopes to see Alto back and Sheryl awake. The dynamics between the three (romantic or platonic) in the first movie was so strong. The way the three worked together in sync, helping and all was very, very well done.
It's like the opposite of Minmay, Misa+Hikaru, who grew closer together after the series apparently, then left together and disappeared. Now these three who worked together and are torn apart for some circumstances. Still, there's a lingering hope.
I complain about Kawamori, but I understand why he gave us this ending. It's touching.
Joined to post here, and this is my first post. I hope that it's okay...
By the way, I love reading all the discussions! <3
I found a blog and was skimming through comments and trying to make sense of what I could read. (I'm pretty sure the people commenting have watched the film, otherwise...) Also, I'm still learning Japanese, but I think I can at least give vague translations.
So, the confession.
Someone asked:
なんつってアルトは告白した?
What was Alto's confession?
In reply:
"ランカちゃんが最終決戦前にアルトさんに告白してるという前置きがあり
二人を振り返りながら
「ランカ、ありがとう。でもお前の気持ちには答えられない。」
「シェリル、俺はお前のことを愛
」ちゅドーン"
Before the final battle, there is the pretext that Ranka-chan confessed to Alto.
Looking back on the two (Sheryl and Ranka).
"Ranka, thank you. But I can't answer your feelings."
"Sheryl, I (towards you) love..." Interruption (?)
[I don't know what ちゅドーン means exactly, but from reading the other spoilers, Alto probably disappeared at that moment.]
~~
Whether he said those phrases one after another is not clear.
Whether these are his exact words is not confirmed.
Just to note... ^^;

No, it's not. It's just cruelty to the audience and the characters, if what I just read a few posts above is true. I mean, really, oooooh, Alto confessed to Sheryl and then the two are ripped apart immediately. Is there a more cliched tragic resolution possible? :frustrated: Oh, and in the deal we also get the friendship between the three mains ripped apart, because one is gone to a place unknown, one is in a coma and the other one is left alone. Wow, such a touching ending.
Goddammit, Kawamori. Goddammit typical anime tragic ending.
At least this tripe isn't in the same continuity as the TV series.

I think it's heartwrecking, but Ranka has the hope and she'll know better than us. I think. With her unspoken connection. :p If she wasn't the one delivering the message...
It's just seems so unfair for her... I read that she... saved Sheryl's life? (with a transplant or transfusion, I couldn't make out the kanji - it's late). That's why Sheryl was saved. God... I have a small suspicion that'll depend with May'n's willingness to reprise her role as Sheryl's singing voice.
Alto after getting freaky with the Varja Queen has returned to Sheryl after ten years and has the "Cure" if you know what I mean

I'm agreeing too: I believe that killing a main character is a cheap trick to get away from a difficult situation and force an emotional reaction from the public. Getting ride of the protagonists cuts short all pursuit of any detailed in dept plot and they don't take any responsibility for him/her: they simply leave it to the fan's imaginations and use 'Hope' as justification to twist it into a 'possibly happy ending after all?' kind of thing.
I believe that unless it's throughly justified, it shouldn't happen at all: in the end, that just shows the level of the story teller --> it is a LOT more difficult to keep everyone alive while still succeeding to obtain the approval of the viewers than taking the heroes off the series.
Now, if it's none of the above, and this ending is really the Dream End Kawamori wants and wished for all along, then I suppose there is nothing lelf to say...

All of the spoiler make me crazy
Reading the spoiler is really make me cry. The ending is really touching, and the connection between the three of them is really showed up. I really waiting Yot-chan for the summary.

The Princess gets upgraded crowned as their new Queen. :heh:

Varja - We didn't know Earth girls could be so cute!!
Alto - I'M NOT A GIRL
Varja - So cute!!! Let's make her our queen!

Alto isn't dead, he just folded with the Varja Queen which is why he's MIA, it's a bittersweet ending with a tinge of hope, some of the best are like that.

I honestly don't get that obsession with bittersweet tragic endings. I really don't. How does that elevate the story in any form? Can't the writer feel happy for himself unless he destroys the life of his protagonists at the end?
Hell, I am even vaccilating on wanting an OVA for the TV series at this point, if all we'll get is another tragedy to cap the happy ending of the TV series.

Yeah I guess so
But now that i think about it, with a open ending such as this they could very well continue with the frontier story for the next Macross project or something related to it.
Yes i know it's highly unlikely but I can dream, right?

The Varja were just angry Alto quit kabuki. He couldn't understand the feelings of his biggest fans. :upset:
They won't continue Macross Frontier for a 30th anniversary project, it will be something new as it should be, the franchise is bigger than the shows within it.

I know that Alto isn't dead ^^
This was only a general point of view about that 'type' of ending in the whole, and by 'killing' I meant just making the main character disappear in a way or another, making his being dead or alive doubtful in our minds, that sort of things~
Unfortunately, as I said in a previous post, I don't remember ever seeing again a character of Macross which was declared MIA, so if the spoilers are true, he is a goner...for the time being...
Bittersweet endings are good when there were meant to be, not forced into use at the last 5 minutes of the show; which gets me back to what I wrote: if this was the Dream Ending of Kawamori, I'm perfectly fine with it. But if it was because there 'was no choice' and there 'was no way' to make everyone (aka the viewers) happy unless they did that, well, I can't say I'll applaud to that ^^;
When all is said and done, we really should watch the movie first, but this won't happen for while if the same thing as last year repeat itself...
Hmm, posting difficulties. I hope this post will show up.. If my previous post suddenly appears... ignore? ^^;
I was skimming through comments made about the movie and reading what I could (still learning Japanese).
I found some parts interesting and have decided to give a general translation. ^^
~~
Someone asked:
なんつってアルトは告白した?
What was Alto's confession?
In reply:
ランカちゃんが最終決戦前にアルトさんに告白してるという前置きがあり
二人を振り返りながら
「ランカ、ありがとう。でもお前の気持ちには答えられない。」
「シェリル、俺はお前のことを愛…」ちゅドーン
Before the final battle, there is the pretext that Ranka confessed to Alto.
Thinking back on the two of them (Sheryl and Ranka).
"Ranka, thank you. But I cannot answer your feelings."
"Sheryl, I (towards you) love..." ちゅドーン*
*Not exactly sure what this means. From spoilers I've read here, he was probably cut off by the fold.
~~
Scene of the confession:
アルトが告白しながら遠くからシェリルに手を伸ばして
シェリルも泣きながら手を伸ばして
アルト爆発
シェリル倒れる
While confessing, from afar Alto reached out his toward Sheryl.
Sheryl too, while crying, reached out her hand.
Alto (caught up in) explosion.
Sheryl collapses.
~~
Interpretation of ending by one fan:
>>アルト死んでねーよwww
アルトが帰ってきたら目覚める→シェリルの口が動く&イヤリングが光ったし生還だろ
Alto didn't die~
When Alto returns, Sheryl will wake up (Ranka's words/belief, according to other spoilers) -> Sheryl's mouth moves and earring flashes.
[Ranka says those words... And then when Sheryl is starting to awake from her coma, her earring flashes. Hope?]
~~
None of this is confirmed. (Did Sheryl begin waking up in the end or not?)
While I believe the people commenting did watch the movie, I can't say for sure...
Sorry, this isn't much. I look forward to a full report. ^^

Oh, I know we'll get a few interviews with a self-satisfied Kawamori, who will just go this way of saying "Oh, it was the only ending possible" or something to the effect. Which is, of course, total BS. Japanese interviewers suck, btw., I've never ever read an interview where someone asked even one critical question, instead of lobbing softballs all the way through.

will probably say something along the lines ~true love~ can happen even if someone is off with some alien bugs and the other is in coma. :heh:
I feel guilty to have jinx this by bringing up Escaflowne.
But unlike Escaflowne this isn't a closed book, while similar this isn't the same and heck I liked the Escaflowne ending and the MF ending is much better all things considered.

Eh, I consider your mention of Escaflowne to have been a good reminder why it's good to be careful when it comes to endings by Kawamori.
At the very least it served to prepare me emotionally somewhat for this mess. And I'm still mad as hell. Why are Japanese writers incapable of giving the audience a "good end"? Do they need that audience pain to validate themselves?

So what is he waiting for? He hasn't posted anything on Macrossworld, either. ^^
If you must know, I was going to Sunshine City where Kawamori, Megumi, and Aya were giving a talk (I didn't have tickets, so I couldn't see it, unfortunately, but they had a really awesome Macross Frontier display, including costumes, original cels, all twenty-five script books, and storyboards for the movie. (SOME pics coming soon.)
Then we went and had all-you-can-eat pizza for an hour or two before going our separate ways.
Bear in mind, the movie was tough for me to follow completely. There was A LOT of dialogue and I certainly couldn't pick up all of it. I also haven't read any spoilers/synopses that have shown up since this morning, except what's here in this thread.
If you've read everything over the last couple pages, you know the basic outline. But if anyone HASN'T read them, I'd urge you not to. There are some really cool and fun surprises in the movie, and it's sad to think of them as being ruined for people.
The ending didn't seem trribly open of ambiguous to me...Alto's in his EX-Gear, which is damaged, right in front of the Vajra Queen, who blows up pretty spectacularly. I don't see any way he could've gotten out of the way. As far as I'm concerned, he's dead. As far as I could tell, is last words were something along the lines of, "Ranka, I'm sorry, I can't return your feelings. Sheryl, I lo-" BOOM.
But really, the ending is not the main reason to see this movie, although I'm sure it's the reason most people will want to see it. The whole movie is a roller coaster, with new twists and turns a every point. COMPLETELY different from the show.
Nearly everyone from the show is in it, even the Kamujin wannabe.
Luca has an older sister. And she's cute!
Luca goes E.V.A. and gets his airhose cut, just like Frank Poole in 2001. Michael rescues him.
I was POSITIVE that Brera killed Ozma, but he didn't. I was, however, sure that Sheryl getting sucked out into space wouldn't kill her, and I was right. Saved by Ai-kun.
Big, BIG blast catches Klan. I was sure she was toast. Michael jumps in the way, and then I was sure he'd be toast.
In order: Leon, Howard Glass, Grace, Brera, Alto.
The concert scenes are again amazing. The opening (starting with the church/wedding bell stuff) is great, creepy, weird, and sexy, with Nurse Sheryl creating test-tube baby Sheryls. The Ranka "Magical Girl" concert scene is likewise awesome, making we want to shout out, "I do, I do, I DO believe in fairies!!" And the Seikan Hikou scene was really, REALLY funny...Ranka Lee with "Lovely Bomber"...Michael as Basara, Klan as Mylene, and Canaria (who else?) as Veffidas.
S.M.S. VOLLEYBALL!! Monica's finest moment.
The red VF-1 that we saw in the trailer is simply a holographic prop from Ranka's concert, alas. And the white Koenig Monster is nowhere to be seen.
I gotta admit, I had a tough time understanding who the REAL bad guys were...first it was the Vajra, then Leon, then...Galaxy...? I'm not entirely sure.
And then there's the big battle at the end...SMS chapters from all over the galazy show up, all with their own Macross Quarters. This is where Isamu comes in, flying his old YF-19, calling it "pretty baby" and giving that inimitable "YE-HOOOOO!!" If the audience hadn't been so silent throughout the movie, I would've hollered and cheered.
Speaking of the audience...I'd say about a third of the crowd (mostly high school girls) were in tears at the end of the movie. A few were outright sobbing.
The YF-29 makes perfect sense in the story. They upgraded the VF-25, quadrupling it's engines and giving it a lot more firepower...essentially creating an "anti-Vajra" VF.
All the new songs were great. "Sayonara no Tsubasa" was especially good, as was the final song that played during the credits.
Sheryl in Alcatraz!?! WTF!?!
Interestingly, the "False Diva" subplot is much MORE of in issue in this movie than it was in the last one. Leon even CALLS Sheryl "Itsuwari no Utahime."
Anyway, those few who hoped for a Ranka/Sheryl ending kinda got it...I mean, at the end, Alto dies, and then you see Ranka and Sheryl in bed exchanging bodily fluids. Of course, it's a hospital bed, and Ranka's giving Sheryl and blood transfusion, but you know what I mean.
Favorite lines: "Open Ranka!" "At first, I sang in order to live, but then I started living in order to sing."
But yeah...as I said: long movie, very intense and exhausting, in a good way. I'm worried that it will definitely lose something seen on a small TV (or computer) screen...ideally, it should be experienced in a big theater with a huge crowd. But I'm really glad I got to see it, and I thought it a fitting end to the Frontier series.
The whole Lips twitching, earing flashing? Placates me. :)
At least Sheryl will wake up and Ranka will be there... Give her a year or so to recover. I think she could become Ranka's advisor/songwriter until she recovers to sing again (I'll like them to be a duet).

To be honest
I was expecting an ending like Escaflowne or like Macross Zero (more after that interview posted some days ago), but that doesn't mean I'm Ok with it.
Now i want an added scene for the Dvd/BD :p
Okay, here's a compilation of all the (unconfirmed) spoilers going around:
- Awesome Cameo! :D
- Alto and Sheryl had met before as children. Something about flowers.
- The person in the wheelchair who Sheryl was standing next to turned out to be Alto - however, this happened early/in the middle of the series, and not the ending as previously thought.
- Ranka confessed to Alto, but refused to hear him out, saying that if she heard, she wouldn't be able to sing. Alto then hugged her and told her that he could not respond to her feelings, and told her that he loved Sheryl.
- Apparently, Alto was attacking the Queen Vajra with the Frontier Fleet, but it seems he couldn't escape from the attack barrage from Frontier. After that, Alto's fleet dispersed/exploded on the palm of the Queen Vajra's hand, and at that moment, Alto confessed to Sheryl.
- During the confession, Alto reached out his hand towards Sheryl, and Sheryl, while crying, tried to reach for him too. Alto then was caught up in an explosion, and Sheryl collapsed (from emotional exhaustion and virus?)
- Alto folded with the Vajra queen, and disappeared.
- To save Sheryl's life, Ranka underwent a transplant or transfusion of blood (?) and managed to get Sheryl out of the red zone. Sheryl is still in a coma. Ranka then said that when Alto comes back, then Sheryl would wake up. Then, it shows Sheryl's mouth twitching and her earring gleaming. (Extended epilogue in blue rays?)
So those shoujo-ai spreads were foreshadowing! Good to know! :heh:
Now I hope there's a OVA sequel with Sheryl/Ranka/Nanase triangle.

Thanks, Richard, it's really very nice from you to do this detailed summary. :)
Still doesn't make me less angry at Kawamori for doing the cliched bittersweet-tragic anime ending ( because in anime, nobody gets to have just a happy ending to a romance ), but there you go.
Some questions:
- How much did the plot of the movie equal the plot of the series?
- So, in the end, Grace is still evil, huh?
- What do you mean by "Sheryl in Alcatraz"?

One has to wonder if there is a competition going on between the famous anime directors. :heh: I can just imagine it, them sitting in a bar and getting progressively more drunk, trying to top each other in how they screwed over their audience emotionally. And then Kawamori goes "Y-y-y-ouuu wait, I'll topsh you allllll". :p
Anyway, now on to the really important question: What does this mean for the TV series ending? I mean, are they separate continuities, like I claim? Or are they conflated, like others want? What does the confession from movie Alto mean for TV Sheryl and Alto? Nothing? Everything? Discuss. :p

Yes, exactly.
- Ranka confessed to Alto, but refused to hear him out, saying that if she heard, she wouldn't be able to sing. Alto then hugged her and told her that he could not respond to her feelings, and told her that he loved Sheryl.
Two different scenes, IIRC. I think Ranka confessed to Alto before the big battle, and Alto definitely confessed to them after it.
Pretty much. It seemed to take a long time, though
- During the confession, Alto reached out his hand towards Sheryl, and Sheryl, while crying, tried to reach for him too. Alto then was caught up in an explosion, and Sheryl collapsed (from emotional exhaustion and virus?)
Umm...that sounds right, but there was a lot of reaching out to other peoples' hands in the movie...Sheryl couldn't have caught his hand, though, since they were nowhere near each other at the time.
- Alto folded with the Vajra queen, and disappeared.
On reflection, I suppose that could've happened. They was a Macross-Zero-Shin-Kudo-style gold light around them before it blew. So yeah, I guess it IS kind of open...Alto's either dead, or he's hanging out with Shin and Sara (and presumably Hikaru, Misa, and Minmay).
Ranka might have said that...I'd pretty much given up trying to understand all the dialogue by that point. But the visuals are accurate. And obviously, it's WAAAY too early to start expecting an extended epilogue on the Blu-Ray.
Hope that helps.

Once Alto gets more self-awareness... Of course, we have to wait for an interview about the subject. You bet someone will ask Kawamori.
Yeah, in the typical Japanese interviewer style. "Oh, great director Kawamori, please honor us with flowers coming out of your mouth and give us a total non-answer to our softball question. Thank you, great director Kawamori, we will now never ask a follow-up question or be critical in any shape or form. If there is anything controversial to discuss, we will totally wait until you talk about it of your own volition, because asking even slightly tough questions is something we never, ever, ever do in Japanese interviews".
At least that is what I got out of the last three years of interviews I've read. :heh:
BTW, the light novels ended in a threesome? Explicitly? And I guess you mean the romantic kind, right? :p

Ranka might have said that...I'd pretty much given up trying to understand all the dialogue by that point. But the visuals are accurate. And obviously, it's WAAAY too early to start expecting an extended epilogue on the Blu-Ray.
Hope that helps.
thanks a lot for the summaries :) Macross Frontier will be remembered good with that kind of ending :heh:

As you can see Yot realized that something else could've happened in "that" scene, which is why you should be more aware of the info. It's easy to miss some stuff...
I'll be seeing the movie again later on in the week (Friday, maybe? That's my next day off). I'll try to post something more definitive after that.
I'd like to see it it at least three times in the theater.
OH! And I forgot to mention...after going to Sunshine City for the exhibit, I went to Animate and got something special...pics forthcoming as soon as Josue sends them to me. :D
OH And yeah...
DYRL-style Bodolzaa fortress!! The Vajra were nesting in it or it had ben taken over by Galaxy or something... But hey, it was there. :D
OT but holy shit Kawamori is doing an AQUARION sequel, I guess he wants to test some new animation techniques for Macross 30 like he did with Aquarion for MF.
http://aquarionevol.com/
How will they top the opening song of AQUARION? My advice, don't even try, have no OP at all Kawamori.

Yot, answer my questions, pretty please? :p From last page.
Oh, so now discussing the things that clearly happened in the movie is somehow off-limits in the movie thread? I don't think so.
No, Maggie, it's not off-limits. Now nobody's stepping on anyone's posting rights, let's not get that dramatic, but it's going to be very likely that this thread will be filled with more spoilers to come, those that extend beyond the love triangle, with many, many people commenting on their excitement and whatnot, so again, perhaps the Romance thread is the ideal thread for this. :)
____
Thank you very much, Yot-Chan. :D
I couldn't help but laugh over the response to the cameo - the entire fandom seems to have gone apeshit over Isamu.
Overall, thanks for clarifying the spoilers. ;) It's definitely going to be a chore waiting for the movie, but overall, it looks like it does have the bittersweet flavor I'm hoping for, after all! :D

For the moment this is the thread to discuss the very, very fresh movie spoilers, so I'll discuss them here. I am sure things will spread out to the other threads over the next few days, but kindly don't try to bullrush people out of here for the moment. Which you are clearly trying to do right now.

Sorry, I missed 'em.
- How much did the plot of the movie equal the plot of the series?
You mean how similar are they? Not much at all.
- So, in the end, Grace is still evil, huh?
Quite honestly, I can't tell. But I don't think so. She gets pretty hacked up about halfway through the movie, and then just kind of lies around being and armless, legless torso for most of the rest of the movie.
- What do you mean by "Sheryl in Alcatraz"?
Sheryl goes to jail, and will be executed as a traitor. The jail, following the grand tradition of places in Frontier being based on real-life locales, is based on Alcatraz.

That + best OP song ever.

@Yot-chan: Thank you for the summary! ^^
- シェリルスパイ容疑で逮捕→戦時のスパイなので裁判なしで即死刑→アルカトラズwへ収容
- 脱獄→シェリル&オズマ&ブレラ死亡?→緑告白
After she goes to Alcatraz, jailbreak?! If possible, could this be clarified? Or maybe this is completely false... ^^;

Many thanks, Yot. :) Now those are spoilers beyond the ending which are worthy of discussing. :D

No, it was a suggestion, maggie, nothing more, nothing less. If you feel very inclined to post here in the movie thread, then by all means, do so.
Well, there also seems to be even more spoilers floating around, but nothing that's major so far. @Yot-Chan, as I've said before, I'd imagine that it must've been quite a blast watching it on screen; makes me wish I could be there and join in the hype and experience. Well, best to wait for the blue ray and start flailing. :D
It's been one heck of an interesting day, with spoilers abound and answers being given - after waiting for four years, it's finally starting to sink in that it's officially over. There's still months to go before the release, but I'm going to miss this series so much, as it's the only series in a while that I've pretty much invested a fair bit of my time and attention to. I suppose it's time to start grabbing for tissues now.

Nope, it happened. And it was AWESOME.
Seriously, it's great. Alto's dressed like goth loli maid (purple lipstick included) with the same jets under his skirt that Sheryl had in the first movie. Sheryl's been in her jail cell writing the words to "Sayonara no Tsubasa." On the walls. In blood. Alto breaks in and rescues her.
Meanwhile, "Ranka Lee and Lovely Bomber" are performing, and Michael, dressed as Basara, starts taking out guards with a dart gun hidden in his guitar neck.
It's incredible.

Yeah, I am getting now more and more why it is more of a "enjoy the ride" than "enjoy the ending" experience. YMMV, of course, depending how much you enjoy bittersweet endings.
Seems that most of the movie was a blast to watch.
Oh, another question:
Did Ozma get over his overprotectiveness of Ranka? Or was it him who caused Sheryl to go to prison? If not, why was she sent there?

Well, nobody says that we'll never get an OVA for the TV series. So far, we don't know what will be the next thing for Macross.

*gets to her knees and begin to pray*
Please, please please...
I don't want Alto to be dead. I want a real ambiguous end for him, not a clear "Alto is dead but everyone is in deny" fo him.
He can't be dead when we finally get our Alto/Sheryl confession. He just can't ; Sheryl doesn't deserve that.
I so want to see this movie. I remember the time the serie ended (it was the same week CG ended BTW, that was one hell of a week !) with this weird ending. And While I was waiting for something BS, I wasn't waiting for this much.
Oh and Isamu <3
And ironically I think that's why mecha shows are my favorites. Thanks for eveyone who provided the spoilers, can't wait to see this movie, and Sheryl will always be my Queen <3
Well I wouldn't expect anything more except for extended scenes in the Bluray, Kawamori is working on Aquarion Evol and than you have the 30th Anniversary project... hopefully 2 girls and 1 guy again.. fighter pilot girl pls Based God Kawamori

Get over his overprotectiveness? I'm not sure. He definitely wasn't around her much by the end... If he gave speech to that effect, I missed it.
As for Sheryl going to jail, it was all Leon's doing. He denounces everyone from Galaxy (i.e. everyone with implants) as a spy and has all of them executed. Tis is where Grace gets badly mangled (he keeps what's left of her in a glass case in his office for interrogation. Sheryl, denounced as "the False Diva" gets thrown in prison. Thankfully, when they show the news broadcast about it, the English words "DEATH PENALTY" are helpfully flashed on screen.

As long as Kawamori doesn't give interviews where he touts the movie ending as the "one true" ending, that is...

Curses! And that with the amount of fanservice we got in movie one.
Speaking of that, how big is the fanservice factor in this one? Not that I am that much of a fan of the gratuitous boob-bounce but since it is not improbable that this will be the last time we can see Sheryl on-screen...

No. There was a trailer for Buddha, though, and that looks like it could be good. And an ad for May'n's new album. And a creepy promo against camrips with a funky, breakdancing, tuxedo-clad guy with a digital recorder for a head.

Movie 1 definitely had more.
