Uhm. Just looking at DYRL only Misa and Hikaru came together during their odissey. It is very similar to Alto and Sheryl in the series. They were "stranded" on Frontier and people closest went on their own journey.

I'm talking about the official art of them. There wasn't one that I found where they were considered a couple, just them saluting each other. All the time, Minmei was pushes with Hikaru on the covers of magazines and whatnot. I'm not talking about fanart.

To be honest, Minmei was the most popular character in the whole show.:heh: She has 3 times more artwork than both combined!

I hate to say this, but there are a LOT of authors that will put one couple together but support both. I have met one person who put a couple I hated together, but he said he liked both ideas, but went with one he thought would be accepted best. Turns out, he was right too.:heh:

It's all about thinking what your READER would like, for most authors. Me, I do what I want in a book.

There are official pictures of their wedding, and dates and the two of them hugging, you really should try to at least google image search before you make assumptions.

Oh and what were those series in question out of curiosity?

Actually during the original airing of the tv series Misa was more popular than Minmei.

Though I say this the only ending I really hated was the one to Ichigo 1000%, but that's because

1) The girl who won not only wasn't around for most of the series
2) Her and main guy broke up and she moved to another country
3) They only got together because of a misunderstanding, after the fact the author then applied retcons to make the girl like him, even though the girl admitted to not knowing who the boy was
4) Even when they frequently weren't on the same page
5) They don't don't have anything in common
6) And when she did show up it was to drive the point home that their relationship wasn't going anywhere (as in not progressing), and they couldn't understand each other
7) The mangaka solved the above by basically not allowing the main character to achieve his dream, despite establishing the fact that he was a good director
8) He was closer to all of the other girls than he was to one he actually chose, and he met those girls later on
9) Both of them actually admitted to losing affection for one another
10) The characters involved lampshaded the fact that the main character was significantly much closer to the rest of the girls than the one he chose
I could go on...

But even then I accepted the ending and moved on, and you should too.

In official arts, Minmei was the more popular. She had a whole BOOK with at least 64 pages worth of artwork for her. Whilst Misa, I think, had quite a bit less.

Trust me, I did google. It's hard to find any artwork inbetween all the fan work. Remember the internet is LARGE!:twitch:

There is some, but nowhere near Sheryl/Ranka's level... :heh:

As for the official pictures, it's possible since Hikaru (unlike Alto) was really deep into Minmay in the beginning. But I have lots of Hikaru/Misa ones too. I remember that Mikimoto answered once in a Spanish interview (in a magazine known as Kame years ago) that if he were Hikaru should have chosen Minmay, not Misa. So...

Since they supposedly have some emotional understanding/moment while Alto helps him fight mind control or something. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Be sure to tell Kawamori all that you have said and analyzed here. I'm sure he'd love to hear it.

I think she could have misunderstood Macross the First as that? (Although who knows how that one is going to end up since it's not over yet and Mikimoto is in charge. He who favors Minmay over Misa easily).

Let me tell you I started watching frontier because of a bet i lost with my brother and since the get go I tough that ranka was going to win (and also I always root for the obvius couple, unless given material not to, like one of the parties being total jerks wich is what Sheryl came across the very first episode) by episode 7 I wasn't sure anymore.

But by the end of the series (actually episode 22 was what ultimately sold it to me) I was totaly on the arusherri ship, even when I used to have Aruran shipping goggles, I'm pretty analitical and even if I don't aprove of a ship I could admit that said ship is the canon one, to make sure of it I passed the series to my friends and shared views with others that have watched it, ALL of them ended on the arusherri ship even without shipping goggles they came to the obvius conclusion.

Since recently I am receiving classes about history structure and how to translate it to a movie and other media I could tell you this, if they intended anyone to believe that aruran had high chances by the end of the series then they did a really awful work at it.

Movie verse wise they did a way better work but sadly while having bigger chances Ranka seemed friendzoned from the get go for me.

The same thing actually happened to me. When I started MF I was an AruRan shipper but when I actually continued to watched the series I realized that there was nothing there. Alto just wasn't interested in her like that and its kind of hard to ship a couple when one of the parties isn't in having a relationship, and it was the same on many of forums I've been on not just this one. That's why I kinda feel sorry for LoveMeKags.

Yeah, that's undeniably true. But it wasn't until I saw the audience at the movie that I realized just HOW MANY high school girls are TOTALLY INTO Frontier.

Congrats, I hope it does work out. :)

Anyway, Kawamori seems to have broadened the franchise by focusing on the romance. Makes you wonder what the next big Macross project will look like and if they will go back a bit to the Frontier well before starting said next big project. I only hope that we still will get one or two OVA's, one each for the series and the movies, that's all I still want, some closure on both accounts. Additional fluff OVA's would be appreciated, too. :p

I didn't ship anyone throughout my entire first watch through of the series. My reaction was just "Meh, Alto can pick whoever he wants, WOO! EXPLOSIONS!" Yes, I was largely in it for the space fighters, the mecha, and the explosions, but the side story drama was relatively entertaining itself and contributed well to the battles, making them emotional and relevant. At the end I was kinda laughing at how the series ended and in awe of the awesome (From a mecha and explosions perspective, that ending was perfect). Since it amused me though I took a minute and thought about it and more or less treated the ending as an invitation for the audience to choose for him, because he's indecisive. I decided Sheryl made the most sense. My brother decided Alto wasn't into girls (but he's a troll).

It was only later that the shipping bug started biting me and like some bug bites I didn't even realize I'd been bitten. I can only guess it started when I looked back upon the series and what it really meant to me. The show lingered in my mind for no immediately discernible reason, as it seemed largely a normal series, but I realized it wasn't the overall series, just one aspect. Sheryl was what was lingering. And I watched the whole series and just said "You know what? Alto isn't the main character in Macross Frontier. Sheryl is." I guess kinda like what's-his-face said in an interview about how Sheryl's story always manages to find its way in.

I forget what point I was trying to make. I guess what I'm saying is that although I think AxS made the most sense to me, I wouldn't have minded AxR and I could see it happening. I just feel like Sheryl would have been fine in the end.

Now I think I'm off on a tangent. I'm just going to end this here.

Addendum: And I think I took too long to write that. Eheh.

And brilliant! By creating a show with romance and mecha he has brought together fanboys and fangirls and given them something in common! It's all a bid to save the geek population from extinction due to a lack of breeding.

On the point of "why?", I'd like to add that, compared to SDFM or Macross 7, Macross Frontier did not have the luxury of an interesting ( i.e. complex ) enemy, which could have filled up some time to explain their motivations. As such, the vast majority of the focus had to be on the character interactions of the "human" cast. Focusing on the romance did so admirably, with the happy side effects of broadening the franchise to schoolgirls and romance friends. And people who see how awesome Sheryl is. :D

This is off topic, but neither of them sing. They are both Valkyrie racers (Chelsea, the silver-haired one, is the main protagonist of The Ride. Magdalena is her Rival).

Based from what I've heard, Magdalena has some things similar to Sheryl: pride that can be easily misunderstood as arrogance, coupled with a heart of gold.

Physically? I'd dare say it's the hair: if you just darken the pinkish tint of Sheryl's hair, you'd probably get Magdalena's hair color.

Besides, she's using a SV-51 variant at the time of Frontier (and still kick @ss). How freakin' cool is that?

Macross the Ride is a novel, I'm not sure but I think there are already 4 or 5 chapters until now.
I would be really surprised if they animate this or make it the 30 anniversary project, I heard that the novel is getting popular but I'm not sure if Kawamori would like to reuse some things, in this case the setting since the story happens in the Frontier fleet.

Personally I would like something completely new for the next Macross.

Well I'm not really following this because as you pointed there are no translations but what I know is this (If someone want to correct me please do so):

The story is about races with modified Valkyries called "Vanquish Races" and happens in 2058 in the Frontier fleet, the main character is Chelsea Scarlett who is a pilot from Apollo squadron of SMS, her squadron is trying out the VF-19EF Caliburn for SMS and I think she uses a VF-19Active Notung for the races (I'm not sure).
The other main character is Hakuna Aoba who apparently participates in the races with a VF-1 and he's called "The uncrowned King".
Other characters are Magdalena Zielonaska that is a Vanquish racer and pilots a SV-52 and Nicolas Francoise who has a VF-9. About the story itself I really don't know much, I just have seen scans with characters and their valkyries.

I hope that helps, but we really need someone to write a good summary of the story or even translate some chapters :p

As a concrete example, I know MY work on the Misa novel would be sped up considerably if someone (like you, perhaps) bought the book, and used, say the "lookup kanji by radical" function on http://jisho.org to find out how to pronounce difficult vocabulary, which would cut down considerably on the time it takes me to translate.

So. There IS stuff you can do to help out and speed the process along. If you choose NOT to, that's fine. But that also means that you simply want a free ride on someone else's dime and toil.

I usually distance myself from such novels or manga, unless they are directly related to the story on TV in some-way.

The problem with side-story novels and manga set within an established mecha metaverse is that, they will never be nearly as epic as the TV series, movies, OVAs... etc.

Its a shame really, since The Ride has some promising character-designs. While I am hoping they do something about The Ride other than pages of text, I am not going to bank my hopes on it. Oh well.

I honestly have her high up on the list of being NPCified for ME3. They did not get a ton of reasonably well-known actors to play Quarian Admirals for just one mission. The Quarian VS Geth thing is goin' down, and Tali is going to be right in the middle of it, which suits me really, awesome characters should get awesome plots. She will be in the game, the question is just if she'll join the squad or not (personally I expect she won't join the squad until that crisis is resolved... and if she survives, poor girl isn't all that tough). That said, we probably shouldn't be causing a thirty car pile-up by jumping tracks into Mass Effect 3 in the Wings of Goodbye movie thread.

Kresphy posted something at MW forums, I think it's an Animadia article with Kawamori commenting about certain things from the movie like the triangle, Alto's fate, Sheryl and Ranka.
And as always he posted it in japanese :heh: so I hope someone could please translate some of it.

He used "やってみたい", which basically means "want to try to do it". Methinks that it has the same meaning as when he (or maybe someone else?) says that he wanted to give Klan-Klan a spin-off. Which sadly has not (I still am hoping!) been realized :(

As for the triangle matter, I think Thess will be very delighted with one sentence in Ranka's part... (Which basically said, "To Ranka, even beyond love and song, she understand Sheryl <or alt trans: Sheryl and her understand each other> the best" :p)

Yeah, I wasn't expecting a complete sequel series, since Kawamori doesn't do those. But if you formulated his response correctly, then that also means no closure to the TV series and the movies. >.<

I do think that he is right though. Despite their differing personalities, Sheryl and Ranka would understand each other the most as both are in love with the same guy, and both feel that they're standing on the unrequited side. Both girls also try to reach out through song, and bear a similar responsibility.

Of course, with shipping goggles on, you can read that in another way.

That being said, Ranka tips the scale on the unrequited love bit, not just with the rejection; but out of both girls, she is the most insecure about love. It's never truly explained why or explored, but I think it has to do with the fact she knows nothing about herself (forgotten past, no memory) and cannot connect with another when she doesn't know. So, Sheryl has it made, considering she has a past and knows herself very well, even her limits and heart; whilst Ranka struggles to even understand love and how it works.

Just wanted to mention that.:p

As for the interview, I hope there is an OVA. Plus, a Ranka spin-off would be kinda nice, as she IS a big part of Frontier's survival. After all, if Ranka hadn't met Sheryl and Alto, would we have gone on this long journey?:D

Actually, it's the same for them. Neither Sheryl or Ranka truly know their pasts at the start, and the revelation of such affects their respective roles in the present story. The twist is that their pasts are intertwined through Grace's machinations.

The only thing that has it made for Sheryl is her career at the beginning of the story—but as a character, she too has 'paid a price' to know who she is. The revelation of her past isn't just revealed to her on a silver platter.

I'd like to see a Ranka spin off myself, from the movie scenario in particular since it gets a more TBC vibe. While TV series only had the "triangle" inconclusive.

I've actually heard of people telling similar stories (wry smile). After seeing Alto disappear, [with the shock from that], they didn't see it even though they did actually see it. After seeing the film a second or third time, they realised. There's also a hint in the characters that appear in the credits, so I think you can imagine what happened to them afterwards! [<= 超気になる！！ sounds better in Japanese, but basically, now I really really want to see it again!]

On the 30th anniversary
"With this film, the main story of "Macross Frontier" is complete. If we're talking about something like a spin-off of Ranka's "Magical Girl Live" then I'd love to try doing it.
In 2012, Macross will see its 30th anniversary. I'm looking at whether it's possible to take a different approach. [yes, it's this vague!] That we may meet again!

I hated the ending of the series too. And reaching out his RIGHT hand made it kinda weird, as he should've extended both hands, but he reaches on the side of Ranka and not Sheryl. But the triangle was announced "inconclusive" as I'm going "um, really?" First off, he extended ONE hand, and it was to RANKA. Which many stated he wants to scoop Sheryl up, but I doubt that. I dispute that he was more decisive in the movies. Being about to be blasted into the next universe tends to make snap-of-the-moment decisions much easier. And the series just... ended. Had we had five more minutes of it, I think a clear decision would have been shown ( if we go by how things were going in-universe. I wouldn't trust Kawatrolli to not drop his burning husk of a VF-25 on Alto for a last middle finger to the audience ).

Actually, he does confirm it...? SORTA. In his wry way. I understood that people might have missed that after the shock of Alto's disappearance, but then upon rewatching a couple of times realized it. The hints are there before the credits roll. It's possible, because the song is super cheerful. At least is the proof that Sheryl is awake, because she's talking and she's singing. May'n called this the song about the Sheryl who experienced a lot and met a lot of people. Also said it was about her "relationship with Ranka." (I'm quoting here: "ランカちゃんとの関係も。"), in case shipper bias are called. :P

Sheryl in a coma, Alto lost in a galaxy somewhere, etc. If that's the case, what's so different? What significant changes are there besides the BL atmosphere of a few scenes?

On another note, if Kawamori is indeed hinting at all these positive outcomes in the end of the movie, why doesn't he just show them—or at least, show more hints? I guess he wants the viewers to wonder I suppose..? That, and making interviewers ask him more questions.

The impression I got from the amazon reviews were more in line with the earlier spoilers which I linked to...but as you said, they just don't refer to anything specific.

Maybe the characters that appear before the credits or something, maybe he is just refering to the scene where Sheryl moves her mouth and the earring shines.

Anyway, it confirms Sheryl awoke before that. He sounded amused people were too shocked about Alto that missed it. So that makes me happy! :D

Probably to search for Alto (who is now confirmed alive, instead of a goner). Actually I LIKE that scenario the best. Since I want hime to be the damsel in distress, rescued by Gar!Sheryl from the paws of the Vajra Queen. She'll sweep him off his feet and carry him back to Frontier one day? :heh:

Of course maybe Ranka and Sheryl are trolling an embarrassed Alto with a suggestive concert (considering the lyrics). And he gets to dance again... on the stage. It's up to you. But either way, it seems we can picture the best ending possible.

ROFL, really? If Ranka fans trying to argue the relevance of that scene wanna get technical (re-read your post, so I know that doesn't seem to be you)...if Alto was reaching for someone's hand, he'd be reaching for Sheryl's.

When you shake hands, you hold out your hand (preferably the right in business, but whichever), and the other person holds out the same hand, because you wouldn't be able to clasp it otherwise. You'd grab the back of their hand and it's be all weird if you offered say, your right hand and the other offered their left.

So, what does that all mean? Alto reached out with the right hand. Ranka has her left hand up. Sheryl has her right hand up.

Do the math.

Another thing I noticed was that Alto always wears Sheryl's earring on the left ear, not the right. And I know get that you mention he's "right handed" but there is no excuse to put it on his weaker hand. He should wear it on his right ear to give the symbol that she's his reason for strength. Instead, he wears it on the left one.

Hand =/= ear... :uhoh:

Anyway, the earring is just Sheryl-based and was purposefully given to upgrade/speed up (due to time constrains) the relationship...

Sheryl won why can't accept that!? knowing for 1 year from a lifetime she won, Alto fell in love with her even years later and NEVER fell in love with Ranka, in the movie as in the series Alto never saw Ranka in romantic way, especially in the movie, and the series also.
This is not about: What would happen if? Sheryl or might not have existed? This is a story of a love triangle and ranka had all the things to win... Sheryl and Alto met once when they were childrens!! once just once! however ranka already had an established long "friend relationship" with Alto as adults so that the past has nothing to do.... Sheryl won, because Alto fell in love with her like adults and in that moment ranka was fighting for his love too so is the same

Ranka did not lose because Alto and Sheryl have a past, lost because from the beginning Alto never saw her in a romantic way

I doubt it will be released this year. As far as I heard, they had another earthquake there (according to our news). I don't know if it's true but I'm just putting that out there. Also, they have so much crap going on right now in the Japanese government and our American government (which is helping them); I think they might end up postponing it until everything is resolved.
