View Full Version : [Game] [PS3] Umineko no Naku Koro ni ~Rondo of the Witch and Reasoning~
it's not the end of the world guys:
11,631 copies x 7,980円 = 92,815,380円 = 1,121,098 USD.
their actual profits are obviously less but how much could this game have possibly cost to make...
they probably broke even.
obviously even if the game sold 1,000,000 copies it never would have been released outside japan so who cares.
but its still possible they'll try a chiru port, as said in the interview with the producer who said they were planning that from the beginning.
Still they said they hoped to sell 30k, it's very doubtful they'll do chiru if they don't reach at least 2/3 of that.

11k huh? Even though it is low numbers I'm curious as to how many import copies were sold.
Well it was said that a VN (a port even) is lucky to sell even a 10K...
and wasn't a sequel already confirmed?

Higurashi PS2 port sold 80k on the first week, but that was the whole VN in one release and it even had a lot of exclusive content. Not to mention that linear VN was changed to include choices and branching plot. It really offered much more than the PC version.
Umineko PS3 port is just the PC version with voice acting, slightly improved art and few CG scenes. It don't really offer much more than the PC version. And it's just half of the story. Besides, who needs 1080p for still images?
I really don't know what Alchemist was hoping for.
slightly improved art

Honestly, it was really not surprising for Rondo to fall flat like that, and it just makes the possible english localization even harder than it was.
Higurashi was absolutely not the same. IIRC, Higurashi managed to break the 100K, with 80K the very first week.
That just shows how the difference is gigantic.
Maybe I was being too positive (doesn't stop me from trying anyway)... Well most of the fans seemed okay with buying PS3 just for Umineko and I'm surprised how the price would scare them off as their DVD prices are horrible as well. :p
I consider Umineko better than Higurashi (not to say Higurashi isn't wonderful) and it gets much less sales. Is it because of the anime!? DEEEEEEEEN!! :frustrated:
Well the other reasons you mentioned too...

"Most of the fans"? No offense but are you really seriously thinking that more than 50% of those who want rondo are ready to spend $400 dollar just to run it?
Especially that it has nothing to do with buying the anime adaptation DVD anyway (I'm sure the amount of fans willing to buy umineko DVD/BD are vastly a minority, borderline inexistant).
I don't pretend there isn't any, but you are focalising on the mob effect: the most eager fans aren't really representative of the whole fanbase.
As far as it goes, the plateform choice was incredibly poor, and doesn't justify the eyecandy effect.

Oops I didn't take much note on the exaggeration again...
If Alchemist cares enough, they might release a portable version sometime, like Higurashi Kizuna on the DS. If they like to keep up with the trend, Umineko portable would be on Nintendo 3DS. Or "PSP2". I don't know about how PSP is doing in Japan (or actually any part of the world) but what I've heard I don't think they would have chosen PSP as the platform. Though I don't know what use 3D has with visual novels. I agree with the comfort a portable VN has compared to one on a big console, even if it is by the expense of graphics. But it's not like Umineko is known for its graphical value.
I'm not giving up hope on Chiru port or English localization yet, but the odds look even worse than when it started. Nobody could know how much a game would sell before it's released so hopes have been high. Everyone here probably thinks that "Umineko" should sell well, though there are various circumstances as Klashikari explained.

Okay, just to put facts straight: the -best- plateform for VN aside of the now late PS2 is... the psp, and I mean it.
The other only viable options are the Xbox (which has an atrocious position in Japan from the very beginning) and the DS.
Most non PS2 VN port you got nowadays are on the PSP, which isn't surprising because of its usual public and hardware whereas it is much more touchy with the DS (no pun intended) but workable still as shown with Kizuna.
This is also the readon why the interview included right away the question why they've chosen the PS3.
In any case, I don't think they are going to milk the franchise like idiots before they have the confidance they can fare well beforehand. As such, unless the PS3 version(s) is breaking their expectations treshold, they won't make any other port.
And just to be clear: I'm not trying to shut down hope and expectations by any means, but I think it would be much better for everyone's sanity not to going all rabid about this port. It just lead to compelling discussion in a very bad way.
Especially when the vast majority of the fans have no idea what's the ugly side of the VN business (or the whole business around these in fact).
Ha, well, it seems like it's selling well enough given all the loser flags they tripped. On the other hand, that's still not great in an objective sense... :heh:
Still, I don't care if they don't turn Umineko into some kind of sprawling media empire like they did with Higurashi, so long as they don't change their minds about porting Chiru. That's basically all I want out of this.

you're greatly underestimating how popular the ps3 is, but okay.
you're greatly underestimating how popular the ps3 is, but okay.
Well, it's more a matter of what platform the target audience is interested in. While still small in Japan, the PS3 installed base is larger than the Xbox360's. However, unlike the latter, it has never been popular within the otaku market.
If nearly all otaku content is produced for/marketed toward the PSP or Xbox360 (which are favored by developers for the lower production costs), you're rolling the dice by producing games for the PS3.
you're greatly underestimating how popular the ps3 is, but okay.
It's far less popular than PS2 was back when Higurashi port was released.
Well.. if you want to get into numbers and speculative reasoning....
Based on these stats (http://kotaku.com/5691113/what-consoles-japanese-gamers-own-which-ones-they-play)... you can assume some things... If 13.7% of 1,171 polled attendees play a PS3 the most, then, out of the 5million+ consoles sold in Japan, 685k+ consoles receive the most active use.
<1.6% of these active consoles loaded up PS3 Umineko...
Unfortunately, I don't have numbers to compare against Higurashi for example... or more importantly, PC Umineko sales... it would put some things into perspective...

The console popularity has nothing to do here. Its public and development costs are much more relevant.
You really can't expect the majority of the otaku/hikkikomori buying a 30000 yens console whereas you have cheaper consoles with that content with far more suitable content for them.
You just don't see as much VN developped on PS3 than in xbox, PSP or even DS.
It is just like that: the console is really not a PS2 V2 in term of games pool. Choosing the PS3 for a VN port is almost as bad as choosing the wii for that.
Aside of Tears to Tiara, White Album and Umineko, there is basically no major VN on it, and that's normal (there will be few surprise such like catherine, but that's that).

Are we absolutely sure that there is no way to fast forward on this thing? All I can do to "move fast" is rapidly spam O XD
To some who were talking about the start button skipping chapters: It only does that for the chapters who've unlocked by reading them.
Well haha if I can't find any other way around it I'm gonna leave the game on auto overnight to finish the current chapter so I can move around freely there at least XD
Heh, there's really not much to break as far as settings are concerned, to be honest. Switching the second to last option to the left releases the restrictions on what you can skip, though. Just so you know. ;)
Fast-forward, chapter-skip, chapter select, it'll all work.

Based on just this snippet, I think you have a false alarm there.
--Since I was told it was okay to be direct, I'll just come out and ask. I assume that the release of the second half is already a foregone conclusion, but are there any plans to do things like release it in a set with the first half, or to later release a "complete edition" with the extra scenarios added in? (Kei)
To be honest, we haven't really thought about it, but I think there probably won't be anything like that.
--What about porting it to other platforms? (lain)
We have no such plans at the present time.
--Why did you decide to go forward with the release at this time, when the original work hasn't been concluded yet? I'm sure that business-related reasons were the most important, but could you tell us if there was anything else you took into account? Was it that you thought the collected episodes in the original work had reached a good point after all? (Haru)
Because we're promoting Umineko to people who don't know about it yet, we wanted to make the exciting conclusion available to those who got into it via the PS3 edition by the end of this year. We felt that, in the end, the original work was most important.
--Do you have plans to release the sequel, Umineko no Naku Koro ni Chiru? I love Erika, so I'm really looking forward to it.... Also, if you are going to release Chiru, who are you hoping to get for Erika's voice actress? (Maeke I☆)

Oops - my apologies! I did check your website and readme for the patch but I couldn't find anything that would oppose it since it is not an illegal download or a pirated copy. Sorry about my misunderstanding, maybe it would also help others with the same idea if you could clarify the policy regarding this somewhere on the website. Thanks for correcting this.
Klashikari
2011-01-04, 11:59
Let me clarify why:
1) To make such kind of script, it would require a lot of work in order to make it standalone sort of. One would actually think they don't need the narration to be altered, but reality is that reading a script like that without the sprites directly on it can be deceiving. For instance, we sometimes made mistakes during the translation process because the visual situation wasn't in front of us as wr work on the script.
Even if you do use the script alongside when you read the PS3 version, it is not really practical with code tidbits everywhere etc.
2) As explained before, the use of the script is solely destined for the PC game. We do not have any actual problem with people using the script for the PS3 version, as its script is arguably the same, slightly modified for obvious reasons (copyright material mention, colorful languages at times etc).
However, allowing the distribution of the script in such fashion actually allows as well people using it -without- any game at hand, which leads to the next issue:
3) Distribution of the script without the game is completely inane. Not only it does impair the actual reading of the story due to the obvious lack of features (namely, visuals and music), but it is also a flat out free copy of the game, however different you may call (it is like making a text only version of a manga and distributing it: not exactly respecting the author rights).
This issue is in line with what 07th Expansion has requested: no distribution of the work without their conscent. And distributing the script alone falls in this category, as it is part of the work.
There is obviously nothing that guarantee that people would follow it (as much as it is doubtful the majority of the fanbase actually bought the doujin game), but as the translation group, it is our wish and duty to safeguard the original author rights as much as we can.

The dialogue is exactly the same as the PC game (at least it was in the first episode) so you can follow screen by screen with that if you want.
I actually noticed some subtle differences that don't really affect much of anything. For example, in the very first scene of the PS3 game, Nanjo says "Kinzo-san..." in the middle of Kinzo's angry rant about refusing to part with any of his things, something that wasn't in the original. That's all I picked up, but I'd kind of assume there'd be similar, subtle additions and changes of dialogue.
clairdelune371
2011-01-04, 13:54
That's right actually, I also noticed some very subtle differences here and there, an extra word that doesn't change much, and so :) Can't imagine why they would do it though. I remember it happening only a few times throughout so I just ignored it hehe... Although of course I didn't follow the entire script word by word so there might be more that I missed. I didn't remember the one you mentioned, for example.
I did wonder why they would bother to make such a small change. The script is essentially unchanged, so why this?

@Klashikari: Just for the record, I didn't mean to provide a way for people to freely distribute the text of the game as I understand some might attempt to replace that with the game itself. My trying to help was for only people who have the PS3 game and didn't want to be completely clueless as it is uncertain that an English version will ever be released. I do understand the argument that they can just get the PC game instead but if someone only wants to buy the PS3 game I wouldn't question it. At that point I think it is not a question of using the text as a standalone, since it serves only to help the game at hand and I think the codes help in the game because you know exactly which portion of the text is being displayed.. And it is definitely still supporting the author. In any case, I do understand that it may lead to free distribution of the text of the game (however ridiculous that would be, I very much agree on this) so I do not actually oppose your reasoning at all. But just wanted to make that clear! :) I, too, would not want people freely distributing the text, and I support and try to abide by all your rules - it's only fair for so much hard work and dedication. That's why I had mentioned a written clarification, maybe for other people like me who have good intentions but just misinterpret what is written in the readme. Of course I fully accept if this is just my stupidity.

It also says that [Metal Gear Solid:] Peace Walker was a smash in Japan, but floundered embarrassingly abroad, due largely to the declining interest in Sony's PSP. which might have been another reason for going with PS3.

I have an HD capture card, and I unlocked all the CGs (about 50 in all) and you can access them in the Picture Box mode (gallery mode). The resolution they were captured at is 1920x1080.

Any ShannonShield and/or KanonBLADE?
fgdhjdhfdjhdjhg I love you for that Lambda/Bern one though. And I'd like to second the Siesta 556 art.
Anyone know where I can at least find LQ pics so I can know what CGs there even are? Or a list of some sort? I'm not sure what CGs are actually IN the game, so.. :<
Though I'd like the one with Maria singing at the wall in EP1 please. And EP4 Battler/Beato hug, if that hasn't been posted yet. And.. Ange falling from the skyscaper, and her memory of Battler (that.. reddish colored one). To be specific..

Say, when you open the Character TIPS to see them "Executed," what does it look like?
In other words, I would like to see the "Executed" character sprites, and/or CGs featuring dead characters. If there's only one or the other, that's great. If they both exist then, well, that's more work for you.
Thank you for doing this!
For CGs, could you upload the one with Rosa, Maria, and Sakutaro? And the CG with Ange sitting down and Maria standing next to her. (I think that's how it looked... these are both from EP4)!

It should be fine. Just don't get thrown off by the extra reaction lines that weren't in the original.
(i.e. Nanjo going "Kinzo-san..." in the middle of his ranting in the EP1 prologue)

Understandable, since those scenes are from their perspectives. If they were to port Chiru, they'd probably not give a sprite to Yasu either.

So far, I have seen two separate video playthroughs with incessant Japanese commentary. One consistently takes minutes at a time tweaking things on his computer (or something, since I know it's a PS3 game) rather than playing the game, and doesn't shut up when characters talk. Another primarily talks to read text that isn't spoken, but his additional commentary comes across as less obnoxious, though he posts his videos at a slower pace than the first guy.

I need to see when I can use the t.v hooked up to the ps3 along with figuring out when no one is downstairs.
Sound tends to bounce off the walls in the living room due to the fact we have a high ceiling so I have to set stuff up in a certain way so I don't wake anyone up ^^;

Playing through this is a whole different experience. I'm have my netbook (sp?) on my side, while playing the PS3 version. This is really much easier than I expected.
I'm not far, but Maria was just introduced, and she is just too cute now! I am a usual Maria hater, but when her sprite isn't god-awful to look at, she's not so bad. And listening to her "uuuu" in the VN doesn't sound nearly as retarded as it did in the anime.. or like I made her sound in my head while reading the original..
EDIT: I have some questions, though.
First of all, when I press R2, a ">>" symbol pops up, but I don't really notice anything. What's up with that?
And second; what are the tiny letters written above some words?

I've only played Alchemist's Higurashi port, but in my experience the ">>" symbol is a fast-forward, which only works if you're reading a part of the game you've already played through before (it was useful in Higurashi Matsuri to skip scenes you had already seen when trying to get to a different route).
And those might be furigana. I think they just use them when they introduce names or a particularly uncommon word (instead of all the kanji), or at least that's how it was in Matsuri.
I have yet to play this, though, so I could be wrong :heh: .

...No matter how many times I listen to them, I can't believe it is indeed from PS3.
Either it is a fandub (unlikely) or the encoding was so messed that it is WAY too grave.
Bern's voice is even more of a giveaway: it isn't a tone that Tamura can do, while Beato nearly sounds like a man.
However, the intonation of the sentences are very close to the original voice actresses, so I'm not surprised that it is probably an issue with the encoding and/or onscripter.
It's not a fandub. No fan would make a voice acting for different characters in 50000+ files. It sounds not so good because of recording and youtube conversion. Actual files are better.

Yeah, the video suffers from quality loss quite badly. I played through the tea party earlier myself, and the PS3 voices sound nothing like this, the pitch here is way lower.
Heh, I wonder if someone will really go through all the trouble of making a full voice patch...

I got my hands on a small handful of audio rips from the scene, and they're just the right pitch. Must be when they upload them to the game that the quality changes.
Ya, if you read the comments they said they screwed up with coding the video
So the voice files are perfectly fine, just the video is well crap.
Try adding "&fmt=18" to the youtube url. Sometimes that makes youtube have better sound quality.
Edit: Nope. Not in this case. What the hell did you do to screw up Beato's voice so bad youtube?
Boinciel
2011-02-02, 23:32
It's not Youtube's fault, it's the sample rate of the voice clips. I reckon that the voice files are encoded at 48000kHz due to being on the PS3, then are played back at 44100kHz. This results in the comically lower pitch.

I've allowed the discussion to go that far, but I think it is time to cut it short.
Please do not proceed with any discussion related to any voice/CG/sprite patch, as anything past what was discussed already will obviously lead to warez discussion and whatnot.
Such features are only available for the PS3 game. Having them on the PC version is arguably not what it is supposed to be, and does not support one bit Alchemist.
Um, i sort of did a search for this topic earlier but I wasn't able to find it (easily). Has anyone done a translation of the config menu?

I see you're quite enthusiast. You also seem to be the kind of person who says all the things I'd usually hesitate to say.
Well, the topic on this forum is primarily to discuss the game in general. But to raise awareness of the localization attempt is hardly a bad idea.
People were also making CG requests, but they seem to have slowed to a halt...

What does this mean in layman's terms...? :uhoh:
I just noticed something interesting while playing, I don't know if that was already reported.
In Ep2 there's always been a controversy about one of Eva's statements: "you are the only grandson to carry father's blood".
In the PS3 version that line has been changed and expanded. Eva now clearly explains that "because Battler removed himself from the register" you (George) are the only grandson to carry father's blood.
I think it's interesting. It means that even in Japan that sentence was the object of many discussions and Ryuukishi must have decided to make it clearer.

It means that PS3 are not being shipped out of Japan or where their made. If it continues the shops will run out of them.
And Sony might get sued for every PS3 they`ve sold.
It shouldn`t have an effect on games. Unless they change their mind and hold games as well. TT,TT
I don`t rember Kinzo`s exact reasoning for why no one was fit to be head.
But Battler`s was along the lines of "he gave up the family name so he is no longer worthy"
I`m going to replay ep one and see what they all are. :3

So, I found something on the Japanese PSN and I was wondering what exactly it was. I don't know ANY Japanese, so I was pretty curious. There are two things on there you can buy and download. One has a picture of Beatrice on it and was added on 3/8/2011. The other has a picture of the island from afar and was added TODAY. You can find them under the new stuff area too.
Anybody got any idea what they are? I'm assuming it's probably something like wallpaper or avatars or whatever. But I was curious.
Pretty sure they're both custom themes. First one should be a Beatrice theme with a couple shots of her lounging on a couch in a dress and a bikini. Second one should be a theme that cycles through the Rokkenjima outdoor environment backgrounds from the game. And another that cycles through the indoor backgrounds is planned for later in the month.

What really eats up space are music, backgrounds, and sprites, which are likely to be shared across games. There's also a ton of images used only in music box demo mode; this could be removed by reconstructing them from parts.

As someone who bought the first PS3 port I can't see my self buying Chiru.
To tell you the truth the voice acting sounded really off for me in the ps3 port compared to the anime and drama cds. Some stuff just sounded way to forced for my liking, I mean I love the idea of Erika and c.o finally being voiced but. I'm not willing to spent $110+ to import something I was disappointed by the first time around.
Now if Chiru is put on the PSP I will rethink my statement because importing PSP titles is cheaper.

Seems like I wasn't the only one feeling the same. The problem in the first game was the direction: for some reason, it almost feel like most "non" main characters were reading/reacting in a dull way, which was more or less worsened by a very poor panel of character sprite expressions. At times, even the PS3 voice acting was duller than the anime, which is quite weird if you ask me.
It seems like only Ougon and drama CD were left unscathered by a weird voice direction.

Most of those translations weren't complete or even released. And I'm talking about more the visual novel scene. No fully fan translated game has been licensed without legalizing the fan patch (as far as I know).
Umineko is too niche of a game that they would have to spend too much time on retranslating, on a dying, piracy-filled console. And it's not even out in Japan yet. By the time they are able to release it, the system will be completely dead; replaced by the Vita.

If you meant 'with' legalizing the fan patch (or illegalizing), then there's one instance I could find, and that was in this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ys:_The_Oath_in_Felghana) semi-recent game. Not a VN, but it still counts. It's kind of similar in that they took the PC's fan translation and licensed it for the PSP to cut costs, so there's a small chance it could happen again.
If Aksys ever firmly says no, I think we should turn to XSEED seeing as they did this.

The PSP Vita could play PSP Go games if this ever came out on both online stores. Also, seeing how Aksys localized 999 with less of a fanbase in NA and on a dead console, the DS instead of the DSi or 3DS, they had successful results.

I think even if such a thing is much of the past now, even nowaday the Higurashi PS2 VN would likely sell more then the Umineko PS3 one.
Since that didn't occur I'm really doubtful.
Aksys or Nisa might try to bring them over (especially as a PSN dl, sounds like it'd work more then a physical disk) but I personally rather they port something overly popular that can reach a broader group of viewers, making VN themselves into something popular.
The last thing I want is to have 1 Umineko game ported, then VNs themselves being forever off market in NA because of horrible sales.
Something by Typemoon or maybe Rewrite, imo, sounds like better ideas to port for now.
Randomly tho, I'm not entirely certain of the popularity of games like Neptunia and Agarest (rpg/srpg with heavy VN elements). I'd say unless these's sales surpass expectations it's really in vain to hope anything for VN in NA.
Klashikari
2011-07-21, 14:10
Neptunia was literally slaughtered by the critics while Agarest was on the average.
Both of which are unlikely to represent the VN genre, since they were generally criticized on their gameplay parts, while the text portion was considered as a "silly extra".
Generally speaking, Vn would have much better chance if consoles had more "anime focused" stuff to make the general public more used to this kind of content. Should it occur, then we might see classic VN showing up before even hoping for niche stuff like Umineko.
But considering how things go for the PC VN market on our side, expecting them to work on consoles is a miracle that even Bern wouldn't be able to grant.

Sorry for getting off topic again but for me I personally think Minori Chihara fits Dlanor after hearing her voice acting for Nagato from Haruhi. That emotionless voice just seems to fit her. :heh:
Well we need her to do the whole "The Great Equalizer is Death" thing in a freaky way...
And it won't feel the same after watching The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

Well, I suppose they could, though Minori Chihara is already cast as Sakutaro. I do know for a fact that they reused some voice actors, especially in the anime (Jurota Kosugi played Krauss and Okonogi, Atsuko Tanaka played Kyrie and Kasumi), but those actors were replaced for the PS3 version (Ken Narita as Okonogi, Sumi Shimamoto as Kasumi). I also know that there are at least one or two scenes where Sakutaro and Dlanor appear together, so if they were to use Minori Chihara, she'd have to be super-distinct with her voice, which shouldn't be too difficult, but still...
But as long as we're on the topic of existing voice actors playing new roles, maybe if Sumi Shimamoto were to play Featherine, then it would be kind of awesome because she'd be playing an older, grander witch compared to those played by Sayaka Ohara (Beato) and Kikuko Inoue (Virgilia), who both sort of took after Shimamoto. If not her, something tells me they may use some other prominent, Yamato Nadeshiko-type seiyuu to play her.

If the dude who played Winnie the Pooh and Tigger can do it easily, then it shouldn't be that hard to do a monotone to giddy voice :)

It isn't out of the question, really. After all, the fighting game did get Rikiya Koyama (Rudolf) and Koji Yusa (Amakusa) to play seagulls.

I guess these tweets will explain Arksys stance regarding Rondo.
-Initial request for new games suggestions (http://twitter.com/#%21/AksysGames_Ben/status/98897532373049344)
-Instant reply regarding umineko (http://twitter.com/#%21/AksysGames_Ben/status/98897758349574144)
Most likely involving suggestion about "buying translation from a group of fans": [1] (http://twitter.com/#%21/AksysGames_Ben/status/98904624341331968) [2] (http://twitter.com/#%21/AksysGames_Ben/status/98904733980438528)
In other words: I believe it is a very bad idea to keep being pushy with them.

Well that's definitely unfortunate to read. Pretty expected and a little unexpected at the same time to me, but at least we got some sort of voice regarding their stance instead of waiting 'till the end of time. My pessimism for this game to be brought over is quite deep right now, but I don't think we should give up quite yet. The vague response didn't totally eliminate the possibility sometime in the future with Aksys, and there are many other companies out there... such as Atlus, or maybe XSEED seeing as they used fan translation for one of the games, but I'm not sure how they feel about VN's.

That could also be a very positive thing. He's pretty much saying "yes, we know a lot of you really want Umineko", which could very well mean they are looking into it or even already working on it. The fact that they said "we know you want Umineko" as opposed to "we aren't interested in Umineko" is pretty encouraging, actually. He only mentioned it because he was asking about new suggestions, and knew that tons of people would suggest Umineko. Umineko is by no means a new suggestion, so it makes sense that he'd mention it. I see no reason to get pessimistic or depressed over this.
As for working with fan translations, that is to be expected. I never thought they would seriously consider that anyway. He was talking about a different game with that anyway too.

He also gave a response to someone requesting 428 that he'd love to do it, but that the amount of text is easily 5 or 6 times what they're usually working with, a lot longer than 999. Umineko probably blows even that out of the water.
It could be solved with Witch Hunt's ready script. He says using fans to translate a game is troublesome, because the people are so separated and the organization would get messy. But it is about a different game, an untranslated one. Maybe they would accept a script that is already fully translated?
He also said that they'd have to pay for the fan translation, and if they had to pay then why not have their own staff do it. I'm under the impression Witch Hunt might be willing give their script for free. Is that right? It does feel a bit wrong if you wouldn't get paid for what is probably the biggest task a localization team has to do, unless their planning an English voice acting as well.
I don't think Aksys buying a ready script would be impossible for them to do. It would save much of their time, even if they have to get an editor go through it too.
Add to that what MainCharacter said, I'm still positive about this. Maybe with the new releases coming, they'll localize it for at least one of the platforms.

Hmm, essentially, he seems to be saying "Yes, we all know that you guys want Umineko and other series I can't remember to be translated. Are there any suggestions outside of those two?" He's not necessarily discounting it, he's just saying he wants a wider selection of suggestions. Then, the company will likely choose based on things like marketability, cost, predicted number of purchases, etc. If they don't translate it, there are always other companies, or there's always the chance that something else will develop somewhere along the road.

Didn't someone have a page count for how long each ep of Umineko was if it was turned in to book form? I mean last time I looked at it each eps was at least 400 pages worth of text.
on another note I would kill to have 428 translated if only to see the Canaan side story translated. Shame that it's a heck of a lot of work to translate it seeing how long the game is.

Yeah, somebody did and I was searching for it (though the search function on this site sucks)...it was something along the range of Harry Potter, which is I think something about 1 million words.
The average rate for a translation is about $0.10 to $0.15 per word (if you charge per-word rate), so even if you'd discount the company or get them to rip off some pure suckers for translating at a miserable rate (which I myself experienced), you'd still end up with a good maybe 50 grand for all novels combined.
And I don't think it's that easy as just taking a translation that has been done...
I don't know how that works legally, but I wouldn't do it anyway if I was Witch Hunt, because that would be like working for free.
And anyway it would be another thing to discuss with people like Alchemist again, who would need to approve of the translation.

I counted up the sizes (Eps 1-7 and the translated parts of Ep 8) as being around 6 megabytes. For scale, War and Peace is about 3.2 megabytes (Project Gutenburg version).

Well, War and Peace has around 580.000 words as it appears. That would make between 700 and 900.000 words for Umineko quite reasonable, though it's of course a question of how which language translates into how many words.
It's like buying a series of about 5-10 normal sized novels without knowing if they'd sell at all. Even if they just started out with releasing Rondo, it'd still be half the amount and therefore too much to take a risk. Though maybe it's a risk worth taking...who knows, people read novels on their Iphones nowadays too :heh:
Maybe they could be convinced to try out releasing the first PSP version. That would just be about 150-200.000 words, which is much more reasonable.
I heard that there is a newly-added red truth in EP3 of the PS3 version. Is that really true? If it IS, what is added?

If it is the same as the new one in the manga version of EP3 it'd be:
Eva did not kill Hideyoshi
Can anybody confirm this?

Just finsihed the game yesterday! Wow that was really fun! Me and my friend split the voices reading the script out loud. I can not even believe that they made an anime of these! It took us probably 90 hours give or take!
Does anybody know what the secret is in the CG image options it is the last one.
