View Full Version : Why do you watch K-ON ?
K-ON is described by many as seinen, targeted at men between the ages of 18 and 30. Yet from my personal observation, the fanbase belies this classification. My adolescent younger brother and cousins adore K-ON's believable depiction of teenage camaraderie. My college buddy watches it avidly for the cute characters and tasteful moe-ness. On Youtube, I see fangirls of a wide range of ages enthusiastically singing their own covers of memorable songs like "My love is a stapler." And I personally watch it for the sense of nostalgia and as a relaxing escape from the business of life.
Clearly, the target is much broader than the typical Seinen, and people of many different walks of life enjoy K-ON for their own reasons. This thread is to survey the demographic landscape of fans and get a glimpse of which kinds of people watch K-ON for which reasons. So post some information about yourself--age, gender, occupation, nationality--and then share why YOU watch or read K-ON.
I'm a Chinese-American male recent college graduate, currently working as a research associate in a bio lab. For me, K-ON is a kind of therapy--after a long day's of frustrating experiments, I can plop down on my chair and be carried away by the light adventures of Yui and her friends. I don't need anime with tons of in-your-face action or fanservice; what I love is heartfelt realism and relatable situations. It reminds me nostalgically of the days I spent in Japan during my study abroad. I loved the episode where they went to a rental studio, which looked exactly like the one I went to in Shibuya, complete with the mirror. Plus, I totally dig the feel-good upbeat music.
Hm... Excellent question actually, i mainly watched k-on because it had a theme of music. From the first episode to the last, theres this sort of feeling that drags you in and cannot make u stop, in other words, wants you to watch more!!! It keeps you away from your busy daily lifestyle makimg you relaxed, heartwarming and happy=)
The music keeps you happy, very catchy and memorable, which fits my expectations in music lol from fuwa fuwa to tenshi furetayo, all the songs are special in their own way. To me they kinda relate to reality lol (not really but kinda).
Also because of the fun factor, it has the slice of life and comedy genre that gives you a good time watching it, you can even relate your own life to the main characters lol. I just love music and k-on brightened my life lol. Oh yea and it kinda makes me happy to be able to visit japan a couple yrs ago lol.
Btw this is the longest post ive ever written lol.
Btw im 14, male, chinese-indonesian as my nationality and a high school student =)

Actually, this series was a recommendation to me by my female friend. We marathoned Season 1 over at her place and it sorta left me wanting for more. I ended up following the franchise from the manga to Season 2, and I was also carried away by the emotions in Season 1 Episode 12 and Season 2's many emotional moments.
Maybe one reason why the end of Season 2 really hit me is because I wished that I had enjoyed high school the same way they did.
I, for one, did not experience the pleasant high school memories that students would carry through college. I was bullied by the same people who made my elementary life a rocky road, and even though the source of those bullying moments have left that school prematurely, it kinda stuck. Another is that I was betrayed by a friend for the first time in high school.
I know that it happens anywhere, from here in the Philippines to Japan (it's even worse there), but I can't help but feel jealous at Yui and the others for having such a nice time in high school.
But K-ON! isn't all a reminder of how my high school life sucks. It even gives me a smile, seeing their antics, and it makes college much less of hell.
I'm a native of the Philippines, currently 20, and a college student.

Why I watch K-on.... I actually mainly started it because of it's high school, slice-of-life factor to it. And the music was actually a bonus. I found it once on the internet, I think, and I thought Yui was cute so I wanted to see it. When I started watching it, I kept wanting to watch it on and on. And when Season 1 ended I felt a gnawing feeling, just cuz the season had ended.
Um.... The music definatly was a bonus for me. Since I like music, and the songs were better than I had expected. Very catchy and cute, Whenever I listen to them, I always smile and sing along.
The characters are easy to relate to, and they easily remind me of my freinds and me. As I watch it, It makes me hope that the remaining 3 years of High School are good like the girls'.
I'm also glad that it isn't in-your-face! fanserivce-y either. As a girl, I always felt a tad awkward with fanservice in the anime I watched.
But, Yeah. It never manages to not put a smile on my face, or not leave me hungry for more.
I'm a 15 year old female, White-Filipino American, and a High School 10th grader.
My longest post ever.....
I checked season 1 since CoalGuys was subbing it and it got a subforum here. :heh:
I didn't really think season 1 was anything special. It brought pretty good comedy and I liked the music but the annoying focus on Mio's fear of everything, Cat-ears Azusa, and molester Sawako really annoyed me. However, it did do a good job of making me like most of the characters, especially Yui, so it stuck. It was season 2 that really made appreciate this show, with slower pace, less focus on the fanservice, and the occasional well-placed thoughtfulness.
One thing cannot relate to is the though of separating with your friends in high school. A great thing about my high school is that we have a 90%+ pass rate for the best colleges in the country so I'm still with them even in college. I'm a male Filipino college junior taking a Physics degree.
Why did I first watch it? Because it was getting more popular, and I was trying to cram as many popular anime series as possible at the time.
The first season's cuteness and interesting plot-lines (what with the dreams and hopes of getting to Budokan) got me to keep watching. Even after the second season became more dull in trying to document real life rather than entertain (not to mention the continuous lack of focus on Mio and Tsumugi's character development), I kept watching because the cuteness was still entertaining till the last few episodes, so it wasn't horrible enough for me to quit until then.
I cannot relate with the girls in Season Two - period. They were still more emotional in Season One, despite the fanservice.
I am a twenty year old Chinese male, currently studying in the Year Two of my college, Singapore. About to graduate, but still surprisingly cannot relate with the girls due to the poor plot development.
I watch it just because it makes me laugh. :D

I watched the first season due to hype, and while I enjoyed it for what it was I was far from impressed.
I watched S2 for the heck of it since I reasonably enjoyed S1 and enjoyed it for being quite possibly the best, most pure example of slice-of-life I've ever watched.

I watch K-On! because it just puts me at ease. I've never been able to describe it, I'm just happy when i watch it, I've tried to explain it to my friends but have never been able to accurately describe it, it just makes me happy.

It's awesome.
I initially wasn't impressed with K-On! - substantially because I thought it was going to be like the old tv series "The Monkees" and have a new music video every week. Well, over time they created enough music that I retracted that complaint (though more animated music video wouldn't be objected to). The series content itself was pretty standard "high school girl daily life comedy" so it wasn't until about 3/4 through the first season that the 'azumanga daioh' type vibes started up for me -- the chronicles of a group of friends, their bonding, and their time in high school together.
The series, especially in the second season, hits that end-of-the-day-exhausted-salaryman vibe very well: calming, sweet, amusing, nostalgic.
I know a LOT of people who enjoy the show with no demographic left untouched. Teenage/20-something women love it, adult males various ages, ... heck, my wife thinks it is funny/sweet and she's my age. I'm a '52 flavors' white male with a japanese-american wife - we're age 53, she's a pharmacist and I'm an engineer living in the Pacific Northwest US.
I'm also glad that it isn't in-your-face! fanserivce-y either.
I think the animators made a stellar design decision there - they managed to cross the gender lines big time by providing attractive elements as well as relationship elements.

I watch it because I enjoy watching it very very very much ...
I guess I knew K-ON! from an announcement at a forum, and I decided to give it a try. After the first few eps, I also tried reading the manga ... And not before long, it became addicting :D
I think I have rewatced both K-ON! and K-ON!! 5 times at least ...
Btw, I'm a 21 Chinese-Indonesia, at my final year of my university study ...
16, male, Chinese, Singaporean. I first started watching K-ON only weeks before the second season started airing. I was fairly intrigued by its immense popularity when the first season was still airing, but never actually bothered to check it out. But with the second season around the corner, I thought it would be a great time to marathon the first season to see what all the hype was about. I wasn't sure what to expect but being a fan of slice-of-life shows and "cute girls doing cute things" in general, I went into it with fairly high expectations and it exceeded them in every way possible. Season 2, being much better than Season 1 in my opinion, has also in the same way impressed me. As for why I continue to follow K-ON passionately, I think these two posters summed it up really nicely:
For me, K-ON is a kind of therapy--after a long day's of frustrating experiments, I can plop down on my chair and be carried away by the light adventures of Yui and her friends. I don't need anime with tons of in-your-face action or fanservice; what I love is heartfelt realism and relatable situations.
I watch K-On! because it just puts me at ease. I've never been able to describe it, I'm just happy when i watch it, I've tried to explain it to my friends but have never been able to accurately describe it, it just makes me happy.
Basically, K-ON provides me with a much needed relief from the stresses of everyday life. To be able to jump into the world of the light music club and witness their joy and laughter is a pleasant experience. You may call it escapism, but almost every work of fiction has an element of escapism that draws people to it and I hardly see anything wrong with that. The themes of friendship present in the show also resonate very well with me, considering I am a final year student myself about to graduate this year.
It also helps that the music is awesome.

I watched it for the wrong reasons...at first. I expected music, awesome instrument animation (since it is the same KyoAni who awed me with Haruhi), Beck-like approach, and...a slight bit of yuri (damn Lucky Star and their KonataxKagami shiptease).
Haha.
After they mentioned Budokan, I was psyched, I was already imagining some awesome concert episode where they rock out and all that jazz, but I saw them drinking tea, lazing around, working part-time and cosplaying. Then I learned that it was adapted from a yonkoma and stopped expecting from there. I followed the manga, all the while thinking to myself; "Hey, this is fun! And KyoAni's doing a good job in being faithful to the source...their twist in things actually makes the show a lot more fun!". I spoiled myself rotten until I ran out of chapters to read (which only took half a day with a few intervals) and went on waiting for K-On! episodes every week, imagining and predicting how this and that will go for each episode. I found myself fascinated with how the girls managed to keep me tuned even in the most repetitive episodes--and that's when I realized that they grew on me to a point that I got used to expecting them weekly. At that point in time, I thought that maybe this show didn't really aim for great feats like the studio's previews works, but emphasized a very simple yet meaningful message to their viewers. I watched a girl grow up from being a directionless freshman to an aspiring musician and upperclassman who found something she loved--all thanks to music. I ended up staying for the lighthearted ride.
When season 2 was announced, I could only jump in joy and fist pump at the sky.
I was impressed through and through with how it went from then on. It also helped that I really liked Azusa (the Mugi focus, I also cherished). The show's characters had me really attached to them that I cried with them in their times of grief, I laughed with them when they were all having fun, I even ate cake and drank tea with them in their procrastinating periods. Watching them relaxed me greatly.
To put it simply, K-On gave me a nice experience, one that I know I will remember for a very long time.
I'm a 19 year old female majoring in Engineering, a native of the Philippines, and a long time anime/manga...errr, "otaku". :heh:

I watched the first season cause i was drawn in by the reference that htey made to DMC in the first episode.
I continue to watch and enjoy it cause it helps me get away from the reality of life and stop hating mankind for just 24 minutes every week.
K-ON is described by many as seinen, targeted at men between the ages of 18 and 30. A bit of the problem is that "seinen" means it is actually assumed to be most interesting to the demographic of JAPANESE men 18-30 IN JAPAN. Bets are off off-island in the rest of the world as to who would be interested. Even so, because of the inputs of the female production staff - the series has crossed the rigid social boundaries and has become popular with a broader audience in Japan as well.

I watch K-On because it's entertaining.
Do I need any other reason?
I watch it because its just plain fun, has believable cute characters, no big messy dramatic or overly comic love triangles and cool music. Its also something safe enough to watch with my kids, who are starting out as musicians themselves.
I'm drawn to shows by their art. If I don't like the art style, I don't care too much how awesome the story is. OTOH, if the art is great, as this is, I'll put up with a fair amount of floundering. Not that K-On flounders. It procrastinates sometimes, but always has a rudder even if the destination is foggy. It a nice simple and easy to watch and repeat series with amusing bits and no world domination plots or scene chewing going on. Like the Light Music Club itself, it's light and fluffy.

Technically, the main reason why I started watching was Yui, because she was the 'cover girl' on the promotional poster and that was the only thing I knew about the show at the time. I thought the idea of cute girls playing music intriguing and when I learned that it was being made by Kyoto Animation (which I started liking after having seen Lucky Star, Haruhi and Clannad/Clannad After Story), that raised my expectation even more.
At the time, I was still fairly new to anime, only having become a fan two years prior, so I didn't really know what to expect. I sought out the manga and after having read the source material available at the time, I knew this show would be fun. After watching the first episode, I was sold.
IMO, the beauty of the show lies not so much in the character design (which I like), but more in how the character interact with each other. Each character has a specific trait that people can more or less relate to. The music is the icing on the proverbial cake.
As for me, I'm a 34-year-old guy from The Netherlands, I currently work as a mail delivery man, though I aspire a career in security.

There's a lot of Chinese people here xD Yay, I add to the statistic!
Anyways.. I watched K-ON! at first cause I thought it was cute. And it was about music, so why not (I was going through a huge "should I pick up the guitar?" phase so K-ON fit perfectly).
It wasn't my favourite anime, I didn't absolutely love it. It was something nice to enjoy every week... Well, that's how I felt for Season 1. It had an "Aw, that was pretty cool :D" kind of reaction when Season 1 ended. I didn't eye out for OVAs or look out for new merchandise. I watched K-ON! because it was funny. Then K-ON!! Season 2 came along and I found myself starting to really love this series for more reasons than I thought. The nice pacing, great music, fantastic humour and extremely lovable characters... Every week I found myself excited to see what happens in the next episode.
I discovered K-ON when my friend spotted a Dont Say Lazy cosplay at an anime convention when there were only like, two episodes out xD
I'm a 16 year old Chinese-Canadian female in the 11th grade. K-ON is one of my favourite anime. It was the final thing that convinced me that I should start playing guitar. Most importantly, it's the anime that's convinced me to enjoy my high school years as much as possible... There's no point in worrying about other people in high school. It should be just about having fun with your 4 closest friends and being stress-free. And why not throw music into the mix :)
I started watching, because I'd heard about the first series and I watched it all in like 2 days, I just fell in love with it instantly. Ever since then, I sort of became obsessed with just how relaxing, cute, funny and just the overall amazingness of the show.
No matter how bad I was feeling, no matter what I was doing or how annoyed I was at something. I could always just sit and watch Keion and forget about all of it, it's just such a lovely, lovely show and It's easily now my favourite anime (used to be Clannad). The music, the scene, the comradery and more importantly the characters really made this show for me. Yui, Azusa, Mio, Tsumugi, Ritsu, Sawako, I'll miss all of your characters when you're gone.
It's kind of sad really that it's a possibility after the end of this series they'll never make any more, but at least I can always watch the DVD's, stare at the lovely merchandise I own, listen to the CD's and most importantly, actually buy and read the manga since I haven't even started it yet and where I'll translate it all myself, it'll take a while.
So yeah Keionbu, you'll live on forever in my heart as my favourite anime. :heh:

I started watching it because it was anime I stayed because of the moes and the music as well as a great story. This is the first anime that I got all the music from openings and endings and even the characters songs.
Im 30 some thing person I think im white but I have to get back to you on that:p
Okay.. well it says it's targeted at men the age of 18-30. I believe that in japan, but i've mostly seen people like in america 14-18. And I've started watching this show because of it's musical genre and total epicness from the manga.

Yay! There's many Filipinos around too =D
I'm a 16 yr old Filipino who goes to college.
To be honest, I only started watching K-ON just like...3 months ago. I had this huge vacation and I had an anime rush technically. At the time, I just finished Lucky Star, which I loved beacuse of its Slice of Life + otaku appeal to me. (Ironically, that's how I considered myself one as well, although not as extreme as Konata *cough*) I originally heard about K-ON from some gaming forums, saying that it's on its season 2 or something. At first, it didn't matter at all, at the time I was watching Lucky Star, Pokemon, and Yugioh 5D's (anime rushed). So, I was there at the computer, and after Lucky Star, I felt a little empty, and I wanted a replacement for it. So, I found 2 animes with the same genre, Working!! and K-ON!! (see the exclamation point ;) ) I watched Working!! first, and it was quite a good anime, and I found myself watching the whole series haha! So, after, Working!! I started watching K-ON! (in sub). I was instantly hooked by the first 15 minutes (a recordbreaker, so to speak), especially because of my curiousity and eventually love for Yui. In K-ON I developed love for anime music. At the time, I didn't knew this was a Kyoto Anime, but when I found out, I was not surprised. I knew I had that magnetism to Kyoto Animation =P. It actually made me love the series more, as I was also a fan of the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya which changed into the Melancholy of the fans of Haruhi Suzumiya due to Endless 8, and I figured that this was "The Revenge of Kyoto Animation for MoHS!" So, I continued along that K-ON path, finishing a whole season in 1 week in a 1mbps connection through YouTube, and continued watching K-ON!! and much to my suprise, they had a fast Yui song called Go Go Maniac! which I loved (thereby making me realize my love for fast J-pop and eventually opening doors to Vocaloid songs aka cosmo-BonsouP). So I guess, I watch K-ON because it had every element that I loved with MoHS and LS with music.)
I watch it the moment the 1st episode was released.
Because I barely know the capability of Kyoani~ I was giving myself a shot. Besides, i never actually watch music theme anime.
Result- i found it hilarious, cute and funny. The drawing and character design were FINE for me.
So...it all began later when i got myself hooked with the anime. I undergo addiction, i can play the episode all over again~watch every of my fav scenes.
LAter on, i realized i watch the show partly because of Ritsu. She can't stop making me laugh.
I'm in my early 20s, but somehow...i wished i was younger to be able to watch this anime.

In order to relive high school to be as fun-filled as the Keionbu. I too feel old...
I don't really have that feeling since British School really isn't engaging at all. I'm quite happy that I'm the age I am now. I answer to nobody. :heh:
Keion in a way, showed me what my life (well, if I was a girl >_>) would be like in a school where student life is actually engaging. That might be why I enjoy Highschool animes so much.

That's why these series are often noted for creating a "nostalgia for things that never were". They're idealized but they are the way you'd like to remember things. I have a number of good memories of my teenage years... but also a bucket of painful moments. This sort of series helps balance them out.
At first it was another show for me to watch. I can't recall the feelings/memories from the first season but I was instantly hooked on the music. The OPs were energetic unlike me. Then I started to see the friendship of the characters develop and it became more and more fun to watch.
When I watched it I'd totally get into their pace and relax in my chair.
Then when the concerts came I'd get excited as they'd most likely play a new song.
I don't want more of the same from future shows although one or two would be nice amongst the rest. Watching these slice of life shows is perfect for winding down, they're a change of pace from the other shows I watch. With music they added another layer into what I think would have been just another slice of life show.

Why do I watch K-on? Basically, it's like a disney cartoon. One that kinda makes you understand how they feel for instance. When I get giddy and hungry like Yui, I can relate to it for instance. Another thing is, it's not over the top anime. You'll laugh, cry, and cheer for it like a disney cartoon. It's one of those pleasant anime that I can comfortably watch around even a ten year old.
I'm a stranger who happens to like K-on for what it is. My identity is irrelevant.

Well, it's not just about why we watch the show... It's also asking about the audience, the viewers. If there are any emotional ties to the show, inspirations and anything deeper than just the fact that it's a nice show. It's a thread asking who you are and what about you that draws you to K-ON... When I saw the first episode, I had a lot of concerns. Seeing the second episode, when Yui was determined to get my favorite guitar...that was it.
Afterwards, I couldn't stop watching it, and it inspires me to keep playing (well, "inspire" and "brainwash" are two different words, seeing as how I usually keep playing JUST K-ON! songs).
EDIT: I'm a 19 year old Canadian-Korean male. I have an unnatural obsession for these cutesy anime shows, but I also love psychological shows like Kaiji.

lol do you have to ask?
its so epic you cant even say why
music and anime combined together.... whats more epic than that?
Frankly I like this thread. I wish there were more threads like this in every forum. I find that forums in general, and AnimeSuki's in particular tend to be a little over-moderated. People get SO dogmatic about keeping the "discussion on topic" they forget WHY anyone comes to HAVE a discussion in the first place... to connect with others who have the same interests, but possibly different takes or opinions about these stories and shows. Knowing MORE about the people who are here and understanding HOW and WHERE you would place yourself in the continuum of Anime & Manga consumers is an important piece of the hobby IMHO.
As the series has wound down, I'm finding myself more drawn to THIS thread over all the others. For instance, I find it both interesting and comforting to find other life-loing anime watchers in these forums. The stereotype is that only young adults and kids watch animation of any sort, yet it is adults of varying ages from 25 and up who actually CREATE and shape the animation we are all watching. I myself have been an animation Art Director, Pre-Production designer and artist and Creative Director, driving concepts in animation during my varied career. Now I'm venturing more into Social Media and the how and why of engagement between companies that produce products and the communities they serve. This discussion thread hits me on all levels. I'm happy to be a part of it.
K-On has been a great show and seeing the wide variety of fans has been elucidating.

One more thumbs up for your comment. Now, I'm not going to complain about the moderation that's going on (I think the mods do a good job), but I do agree with what you said about how people have discussions in order to connect with other people with similar or different interests. Which is why I like to lurk around other forums too^.^
K-ON has kept a surprising amount of fans, considering how simple the show's concept was. It's the comedy and those moments that just pull at your emotions that makes this show so great. I personally enjoyed watching it, and I cannot complain about ANY of the songs they released along the way. I CANNOT.
initially was just giving it a try since the poster looks interesting (Yui jumping with the guitar)
started with eps 9 (i think) and felt quite enjoyable, then watched them all :)
the main reason: i like it

No demographics? No little statistical info like age and nationality?
No demographics = 1/2 Fun.
My memory might be a bit off, but IIRC: I had a bunch of spare time during the summer of 2009, and started watching the first season of Haruhi. Looking up thoughts about the show online resulted in a few... "annoyed" Haruhi fans, saying that K-On had been a bad influence on KyoAni when it came to the second season of Haruhi.
K-On? What's that? A show about a teenage girl rock band? Well, I've got to check that out!
What made me keep watching was probably the interaction between the characters, with lots of different fun combinations. The catchy music didn't hurt either. Yui and Ritsu were tied for favorites throught the first season, until headband-less Ritsu took the lead after episode 13.
I'm a 27 year old Swedish male.
Because is for all ages.
Because this put a big smile in my face.
Because the animation and voice actor have high quality.
I started watching it because I saw an increased amount of uploaded images on a certain image-board website featuring the girls from K-On!. It seemed like everyone liked it and it was very popular, so I figured I might as well give it a chance. Also because it was the first anime I've seen with girls playing any sort of musical instrument. (It was also the first time I watched an anime just because of images that were uploaded on a website).
The first episode had me half-hooked. Scanning through the first ep. just to check it out (Start, mid, end), I was thinking "Meh". But after I watched the whole thing I thought it was pretty good. Put simply, as I began to watch more, I became more attached to it. Relating Yui's progress with learning the guitar to my own progress got me even more attached. xD
I keep watching it because it continues to inspire me to play my guitar and allow my appreciation for music to thrive. My old guitar used to lay in a corner and collect dust, until I started watching this. I began practicing again (what was once a month, became once a day), learning new chords and techniques. It even had me buy a new guitar! Also experiencing, their endless funny antics, ups and downs, and idealistically happy lifestyles served as an extra bonus. I mean, who wouldn't mind leading lives like the Light Music Club? Drink tea everyday, play music all the time with your close group of friends, go on vacations and such. :) (BTW Filo, 17, In Aus)

To be honest, I didn't like the first season all that much. I loathed at how the show wasn't really much about a girl learning to play the guitar from scratch. I also wasn't much for the gags they kept reusing, animation was just okay, music was okay, even though it bugs me how Azusa and Mio don't really do anything jazzy. Don't Say Lazy is pretty cool. I liked wanking over the gear though, even though there's silly stuff like unamped K701s and such. I also liked episode 13, because it seems like the only point where the characters actually had some variety, and Mio trying to be deep is funny in the context of the lyrics she puts out.
But season two is really solid in my eyes, I like it a lot. They toned down the dumb gags a LOT, and kept the humor a lot less in-your-face. The characters are usually less annoying because of this. It seemed a bit cleaner, and Listen!!/No Thank You was a great change from the typical K-ON song. Not a fan of the OPs though. It's really good at what it does, in being a simple slice-of-life show. I don't really think of it as being music-based in the sense of Nodame Cantabile or BECK, but more or less a high school slice-of-life where they just happen to jam sometimes because they are in the same club.
19 male in Canada.
I thought the Ops & Eds were interesting because the opens seemed to come from their time in Highschool, while the ends seemed to feel like professional music videos that would have been produced by an idol-band producing agency. TO me they were the contrast between where they were in the show and where they were GOING to be during/after university.
I'm REALLY hoping we get an S3 with the girls flaking/cutting classes in uni while scheming to get Azusa through HS and back into the band so they can sign a contract and get published. Occasional club dates being played ensue in the borders of episodes.
Its the character development, slow and subtle as it is, that I really have enjoyed in K-On! I'm hoping we get more and that it carries on in it's own turtle paced way.

I find this very interesting. Most girls I know are turned off by yuri in anime. Learning things like this is one of the reasons I made this thread.

K-on is like all the fun things you did in high school with your friends except compressed into bite-sized 20 minute highlight reels. Sure, I was a guy going to high school in America who played sports instead of playing in a band. But somehow, regardless of what those girls are actually doing in the show, it reminds you what it was like to be in high school, just hanging out with your friends (just replace "band" with "team"). Now I'm most of the way through college. I have a great time with my friends here, and it's not like I would go relive high school even if I had the chance. Even so, reminiscing about those days is always fun and nostalgic.
Oh, and the whole cute girls doing cute things part doesn't hurt the show either :D

Well I watch it because it's funny. It brightens up my week whenever I get frustrated with homework or some "drama" that's going on between my friends. I like on how it shows they are enjoying their life and that it's telling you to enjoy your's too. That's why now I'm trying to get a lot of experiences so that way I can say to myself later "Hey, I actually did that once.". The songs are pretty good and the characters are relatable and more realistic then any other moe or fanservice show. I'm a bit sad it's over but I'm also excited for the movie.

I'm 31 years old, male, and am caucasian living in the U.S. Although I have the fun of things like being part Russian for example. Not that I study my heritage much as I should. Now on to why I watch K-ON! and K-ON!!
First, I've grown a strong liking 4-Koma. Both because I read comic strips and because of anime like Azumanga Daioh. In general, 4-Koma based anime tends to appeal to me. The same could be said about anime that may not be based on 4-Koma, but have a feel like it.
Second, I am fan of characters (especially if they're pretty girls) interacting in more relaxed settings. Speaking of interaction. The interaction formed from a group finding a common purpose such as err joining a light music club can be appealing.
When I heard that Kyo-Ani was animating K-ON! and found out it was 4-Koma, I just had to try a few chapters. Ritsu's awesomeness from the start sold me on the series. Thus I waited with an even stronger anticipation for the anime to start and kept reading the manga.
The anime didn't disappoint as the cast in general showed themselves to be fun and they worked well together. Sure, there were a few changes, but the anime felt like it would for the most part be a fleshed out version of the manga.
I also liked how they handled the music. The songs were spread out, yes. However they were treated as important events. They didn't pull the obligation song ***** where you hear the same exact song every episode as just background noise. Not that I don't watch series, but it's a nice change.
Episode after episode was enjoyable. Even the weaker episodes were good enough to remind me why K-ON! was a high level favorite for me. It's essentially in the top 4 for me. Currently at number 3, now above Sketchbook. Having three cour kind of gave it the edge.
For the record, I have GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class as the second favorite. The current favorite is Hidamari Sketch. Which got the edge in part due to three seasons. As well as the fact, Yuno is a high level favorite with the advantage of having the screen time to truly make use of her.
That still doesn't change the fact that K-ON! surpassed a lot of series. Thanks to the music, the character interaction, the story, and the awesome girls. The most absolute favorite for me being Tainaka Ritsu herself. The others are nice as well, but Tainaka Ritsu is the main girl for me. Especially since she's the spark character. The spark character being the one that sets things in motion.

Wow, I absolutely love this thread especially as you all told your stories...
"It was interesting." (a K-ON quote. lol.)

I think this, now at the end, is an important note. In another post I made a joking aside about K-On and the old 70's Hanna-Barbera cartoon, Josie & the Pussycats. In many ways, what was so successful about K-On was the way the music played by the cast was handled. The performances and exposure of the songs have been doled out in small and often fleeting amounts. Early on in the Season 1 there was an outcry of how awful and unprofessional, lazy and unfair this practice was. Many members here complained that if there wasn't going to be enough music, there was no point in watching the show. IMHO, we are finally getting the genius of this tactic.
The typical way that U.S. shows LIKE Josie & The Pussycats, The Archie Show, Jem and their imitators used music was a song a week method. Often times, this formula really worked out to 3 -4 weeks of the SAME song played over and over until you got sick of it. As Japan began to introduce music and idols into their shows, they replicated this pattern. Go back and watch the original Macross. How sick of Watashi no Karewa Pilot were you by the 10th time Minmay sang it? I was thankful it was a short song, because much as I loved the show, I wanted to claw my ears out hearing it again! Since then musical shows have pretty much followed the same formula of play one song at every opportunity, sell image albums in the stores that never were played IN the show.
K-On was equally guilty of selling the un-exposed songs in the backchannel, but it never drove a single song into the ground during the showing of the series. We got to see fantasy videos, live performances, snippets of practices, references from other character's point of hearing and even alternate versions done within the context of a talent fair, or played by another pairing of club members. Of all of the songs, (With exception of the OP's and ED's, Fuwa Fuwa Time is the most oft played and identified with the show, but while its the "first" song they performed together and used throughout both seasons, it never gets tiring to hear it. On the contrary Fuwa Fuwa is used sparingly enough that when we hear it at the end of the series, it becomes nostalgic and appreciated, instead of "Oh they cheap'd out and relied on the ONE song they used all season..."
In retrospect, I'm really happy and satisfied that the music in K-On, a show we all THOUGHT was about music, was used just enough to support what the show was REALLY all about: Friendship.
On the contrary Fuwa Fuwa is used sparingly enough that when we hear it at the end of the series, it becomes nostalgic and appreciated, instead of "Oh they cheap'd out and relied on the ONE song they used all season..."
I disagree.
I was thinking, "Is Fuwa Fuwa Time all they practice?"

Really? You got that impression? Well, there you go folks! One person's "doing it right" is another person's "too much of that!"
Ah, but it was the NEW group doing the tune in their personal way. In general, as one of the "where's the new song per week" group in the beginning -- I'm pretty satisfied with the end results. I got a LOT of music to add to my playlist over the two seasons.

I thought it was the sort of show which you could relax while watching it. Something I realised by the final episodes of K-On was that I always had a smile on my face while watching the show. That was something rather interesting.
Yui Is My Wife
2010-10-07, 00:04
I watch K-On not because the girls are cute; Becaue they are, especially My Wife and Mugi-chan. :p
Nor is it because it is gutbustingly funny. Because It is, Ritsu, you the "man!!" :D
I watched K-On and probably will continue to do so forever and ever because it is a heartwarming and idealized childhood of hopes, dreams that anyone is free to join and be a part of.
I spent my adolesence in an all male private school, where cynicism was our sky, anger the ground we stood upon, callousness our meat and drink, violence and even drugs as natural as the air we breathed.
Yet just like the five angels, for that's what they are, of Afterschool Tea Time, my own circle of five friends were the ray of light and joy that made it all sane. And though, being boys growing up in the 1990's, we were not allowed to say or express it (cos quote Bill and Ted, that would make us "fags"), we really really loved each other.
K-On showed an idealized possibility where you are free to express that most wonderful love between friends, the brothers and sisters you meet in your life, and showed a possiblity of friendship and togetherness being able to conquer anything.
It is for this reason that I am frankly able to relate to the girls better than all the muscleheaded Schwarzeneggers and heartlessly sarcastic Seinfelds that clogs modern western mass media like month old sewage.
Yui, Mio, Mugi, Ritsu and even Azunyan were able to speak to the kind and innocent child inside me that I forgot existed, in spite of the fact I am a twenty nine year old man. They allowed me to be a part of their adventures and feel the joy of being an idealistic and optimistic teenage girl without feeling shame for it. For being able to reach out to the long dead decency inside me, I will love K-ON for the rest of my life. :)
saw it on Animax on it's first run. got interested because my guy friend keeps talking about it and the legendary Mio is in it. dub was annoying and so was the name Azu-meow.
*seriously, they could've just used Azu-nyan instead!*
Yui's voice didn't fit her personality and character, so I searched for a stream and got totally hooked with it because it looks fun to watch and I'm really having fun just by watching it. not to mention that I have RL friends who's as wacky as the HTT girls, really. my high school life was just as fun as theirs.
lastly, Keion-bu kept me company during a tragic moment of my life :) you know, girls tend to be emotional while on their 20-ish :heh:
Well, since everyone's compared their schoolyears to the K-On characters, I might as well, too.
Like I posted in Mio's thread, back in Secondary School, I was friends with these two whacky guys, and was rather burned out by their silliness at first. But then, as time went on, I found them to be quite nice, our friendships bonded, and I was soon influenced by their silliness and joins them as well. College was worse (high school is not a common commodity around here), with more cheesy friends surrounding me, reducing me to being one of them in the end. Heh. It's fun, though.
Ironically, this case, I'll have to admit, have me being more in common with Azusa than Mio. I guess that must be why I look up to S1 Mio as much as Azusa did. :p

I watched K-on because it was about music and stuff...
When i 1st talked about it to me friends they all were laughing about at and me.... , but i still talked about it and told them to watch.
Few weeks later they all enjoyed k-on and everyone in my year watches it because of me XP
And everyone is soo sad that k-on ended.......
Soo i watched k-on because it is funny and really good music to play it XP
I even made my own songs listening to K-on (It was for my enrichement task i had to do..)
The song is not anything about k-on, it just helped me understand how to make music by listening to it XP
The song is not anything about k-on, it just helped me understand how to make music by listening to it XP
I don't want to be a party pooper or anything, but... how? I don't recall much, if anything, about music composition in the show, unless you mean you picked up some stuff from the music or whatnot.
I started watching K-ON because I didn't have any other show to watch, but it turned out to be just the kind of show I liked watching, so it stuck with me. I think it's funny and the animation is pretty and the music is good.
I watch K-ON! when I had nothing to watch at that time. I was attracted to the drawing style (the one on the official site) and that it'll be animated by KyoAni. :D For the first glance, I thought "Whoa, Haruhi-themed with Lucky Star's design". I was expecting that it'll be more music-centric, but apparently that's not the point XD
Still, I like how this anime can influence our emotion.

Honestly I had watched the first series initial because one of my friends had told me about it and recommended it to me after I had enjoyed Haruhi Suzumiya and Lucky Star which they had also gotten me into.
I enjoyed pretty well while it just dealt with the 4 original girls, then after Azusa appeared the series become one of my favorites and I looked forward to second season purely for more of her, as I would have watched it for just for more Azusa Nakano . Once the second season started though I watched it for Azusa, the relaxing feel it had to the series, humor, potential music, slice of life, and cuteness [and definitely not the possible Yuri subtext :heh::uhoh:]. And my age see under my avatar :p.
Why why...
I'm 14 yrs old, 3rd yr HS..
I was actually getting bored in watching anime filled with girl charas, so seeing K-on! didn't had any impact at me. I still haven't watched it that time, only read reviews and comments regarding this anime. One day, I went at a CD shop full with anime stuff, buying a Death Note and Clannad After Story series, when the cashier guy told wonderful stuff about K-on and asking me to buy it. So, I bought it, and it wasn't that bad once you watch it.
The music were awesome, fitting it's theme and setting. The characters has each of their cute personalities. The everyday lives of the girls were realistic, with humor included, and the designs were beautiful as always (thanks to KyoANi). The fluid movements adds solid to the characters and the surroundings.
I still haven't tried out the second season though. Since I'm KyoANi hunting this sem break, I might start watching it after Kanon and Death Note Rewrite (oh, in the middle of Mirai Nikki too)

During K-On!'s rise of fame. I saw lots of commercials about it. I don't really watch anime, but when I saw one commercial where Mio was giving Yui guitar tips, this really got me into K-On! 'cause I love music and I play the guitar in real life. I guess I also watch K-On! because I can kinda relate to Yui and how she learned how to play the guitar. K-On! eventually made me join a sorta like music club in my school. Even though I fail at guitaring like Yui in some live performances, I still feel like like I'm having fun.
I guess I'll give a background info 'bout me since everybody seems to be doing it. I'm in third year of high school and I'm a male Spanish+Chinese+Mild Japanese= Filipino. Yes, it does not make sense.
When I'm bored and I don't want to think, k-ons good entertainment.
Never really knew why it got so popular, actually I do know why I just assume the best of people.
I started watching K-ON! simply because I was bored and needed a new anime to watch, and then it became something so much more. The main thing is that K-ON! inspired me to get out the guitar I've had for three years and never played, and actually learn to play it. It's also taught me a lot about friendships, and I've gone out and improved some relationships with people because of it. Not to mention, it's an incredible anime with a perfect, not-too-extreme and not-too-boring plot, with lovable characters.
And all the moe~ *insert tiny fangirl squeal here*
Oh, and I'm a 15 year old white female, living in the United States. I'm in my second year of high school~
I recall starting it thinking it would have a strong music base topic in the show lol, then it turned out to be a slice of life moe-blob filled series of fun which was still nice and the music was quite nice as well when it was actually apart of the show though i think i spent more time surfing the internet for all the character and insert songs from the series then I have watching the show itself.
I'm 20 years old, Caucasian, college student and currently working overnights uploading trucks at a retail market in the U.S.
HMM haven't read the post above^
but i can be sure they including me watches it becuz its moe...Haruhi said the moe is an important part of life??

I love K-On!
The thing that attracts me to K-On! is the fact that it's the most relaxing slice of life anime next to Aria.
I'm very open minded with anime. I'm into manly animes like Cowboy Bebop and Fist of the North Star, but i'm also into slice of life animes like K-On!, Lucky Star and Azumanga Daioh.
Watching K-On is like going to a nice cafe. Just sit down, have some tea and watch 5 beautiful girls play pop rock music. It's that simple. That's what slice of life is, and K-On is the best example of slice of life in 2010.
And i love the music. The music of K-On! is like a female, more cheerier of post-punk and New Wave music of the 80's. It's good, fun and catchy. Fuwa Fuwa Time reminds me of Devo, while Fude and Ballpoint Pen is pretty much a Japanese rendition of a New Order song. I like those songs, and i enjoy listening to Yui and Mio's voices.
The reason why K-On! is bashed is because it was overhyped, and many slice of life animes don't get the attention of the mainstream culture. Many aren't used to Slice of Life animes, and thus watching K-On is like a culture shock to them.
And if K-On!'s moe content is hurting anime as what most anime snobs say, then that's bullshit because K-On is like Haruhi Suzumiya in a baseball stadium compared to other animes. It's like blaming Anne Frank for World War II. To me, what's hurting anime is the fact we now rely on pretentious, Evangelion-esque bullshit to carry on a story instead of creating simple and unique storylines that could attract more people into animes.
And even if K-On doesn't have a plot, it's the characters that's important. Slice of life is more about character rather than plot, and many people seem to miss that. K-On! also has the best camera angles and artwork in anime, and watching K-On! makes you feel like you're a part of it, which works because of the camera shots and art design.
In conclusion, K-On is pretty much a simple, character-driven slice of life anime with nice music, great camera work and great art design. And the fact that it's bashed for being a a simple, character-driven slice of life anime is just ridiculous. I'd rather watch more shows like K-On! instead of pretentious animes with shitty Gainax endings. Atleast none of the characters have stupid family issues like the Ikaris or saying BS philosophical speeches about life and death. I got sick of those, so give me more K-On!!!

K-On! is one of those anime whose enjoyability doesn't have a reason because the lack of one perfectly emphasizes the pointlessness of the show. It's (a lot?) crazier than something more subdued than Aria and it essentially amounts to cute girls doing cute things, not counting the awesome tracks they produce. Actually, I'm not sure if the songs are the results of the show, or if the show is the result of the songs. I watched it as merely a way to pass the time, but without even knowing it you find yourself more attached to Afterschool Tea-time than you thought you were (episode 20 of K-On!! anybody?). And as for age, all I'm willing to say is that I'm below 20.

Lessee... Reason...
Well, I watch because I read. Back then Im no huge anime fan, but Im still connected to this world via manga, so I lurked some and found the aforementioned series. So I read and read, it was interesting. 4 girls teaming up making a band with a junior coming along, occasionally performing and always having tea-parties and such. Then comes the announcement page with a small dialogue "K-on will become an anime !" At first I was like "Pssh, no big deal" and paid no attention to it. But reconsidering the manga is amusing, why not give it a try? By the time of the school festival part, I was excited about how will they make the song from the manga live. I listened and I was like "Woah, awesome." And so I got attached to the series. It even influenced me to buy and electric guitar (Im a intermediate flamenco player).
P.S. : Im a 13yo Indonesian.

I mostly watch K-ON because it's a great way to escape. Of course, Yui and Ritsu are also a big reason why I watch. I still haven't finished K-ON, but from what I've heard so far I can't wait to see the rest.

I really enjoy watching K-On! because it's pure and simple entertainment. It captivated me from the start with realistic and quirky characters and it's just good fun.
Oh--and it relaxes me and settles my mind after a long day at work.

Hmm, I first heard about K-On in a forum, where people were talking about Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu, and someone asked me if I had watched K-On, at first I thought the name was strange, and he didn't said anything about it, so I began re-watching Excel Saga. Then when I talked about K-On to my friend she said it was very funny and awesome. And I loved it, mostly because of Ritsu, but the other characters are great aswell! I found the plot funny, different, and in some parts, quite touching...

I started watching K-ON a few weeks ago after my cousin recommended it to me. I'm not an anime buff but have a few anime movies. I liked the comedic aspect (Yui's antics) and the characters, as well as the character design. I finished watching season 2 a week or so after I initially found out about the series.
I love the episode in season 2 Field Trip the scene where Ritsu taunts Mio by whispering Lycopeen, where Yui & Mugi are laughing uncontrollably and Mugi snorts while Yui starts hacking up a lung - makes me laugh every time I watch it.
Japanese Canadian female in university.
I watch it because I love those School Life animes. It's also quite funny at times ^.^ Like when Mugi eats Mio's strawberry? She sits there, smiles, and crys. Made me laugh :)

I myself is 18 this year....watched K-ON!....it teaches me lot of thing about life...about how we have to face difficulty using the right ways (slacking off in other sense..)! And I learned from Yui that even if I don't know anything, I can still work hard and do my best to fullest.....anyone agree?

I agree. I'm 13 and the next March I'll be 14. I'm in one Luck Star forum in which there was a thread for K-On. In the thread they said that it is really great so I just decided to try it. It was already 10th episode of season 2

^ Got referred by Lucky Star and Working!'s genre. ^
I am a 13 year old male. I live here in the States and have ever since I was born. I am an avid lover of Japan, ever since i was about 10 to their technological advances. I discovered anime when I was 12, watched an anime call Clannad. I stopped until about 1 month ago when I watched High school of the Dead. I was tired of all this serious stuff so I looked for a fun anime. K-on was just that. It was perfect, I loved it. I am seen as rather shy though, introverted. I have my friends and thats that. I have no need for more. I was able to relate to Mio, as we have similar traits. Left handed, bass (Although I play mine righty), black hair, tall, ect. So this probably helped may stay into the show, but I loved it's innocence and how I could think of these girls as girls I could see in my school, not some fake ones. This show is very realistic in the sense of how they act. I love this show for what it is, that is that.

I mostly watch it because it's a slice of life comedy, which is my favourite in animes. Also, I do like moe, so even though it doesn't make the show for me it's still a nice bonus.

well, you could say, K-on has saved me from a life of not knowing how to play the guitar, and directed me away from being just an average guitarist. plus i love their songs. the melody is so cool.
i have really liked animes since my childhood. i remembered watching shows like dragonball, yu yu hakusho, digimon, pokemon, zenki, and stuff. it really influenced my childhood.
but what i really liked about anime is the music, the songs. they are really incredible, and very catchy. i always wanted to listen to them when i'm gaming, or just slacking off. i listen to the ending and opening songs of yugioh, naruto, digimon, etc. i like those songs
last summer, i suddenly got the urge to learn the guitar. i don't know the reason, but i just leaped over. the first few weeks was really dull, i'm not having much progress, and very close to quitting. then one night, while channel hopping, i saw K-on. i got interested right away, when i saw them performing on a concert or something. (ep. 12 season 1). Mio was in the middle of singing fude pen, and Yui was running. i let go of the remote and watched what happened. and the next one really blew me. they sang fuwa fuwa time. that sent chills down the spine. i was really touched by the melody of the song. i tried to remember it. i increased the volume, and was really moved by the song. i really liked that song. and the song was playing on my mind as i sleep. and the next morning, i said to myself, "i will learn to play the guitar. i want to learn that song". i found my reason in learning the guitar. i try to humm to remember the song, and went on to learn the basics of guitaring.
and the rest was was history.

Yeah, I totally agree. That performance of Fuwa Fuwa was very inspiring to me.
Yui is clumsy, moe, and that makes her hilarious. all I need to watch
