Im wondering if anyone knows where I could find an episode guide with summary's of each episode. Im on episode 7 but Im thinking ive missed something because episode 6 ended with..........
Sorry, never needed to use spoiler tags much before and the FAQ post at the top of each page is gone so
********* Minor Spoilers *************
Anita giving her book report (which was annoying that you dont get to find out what she thought of the book)
But then I go to watch episode 7 and Anita and Maggie are in some strange town eating at a restraunt and Minee is missing talking about a John Smith.
Does anyone know what episode I watched and how many I missed? I'm assuming maybe because the episodes I have are from two different groups that maybe one is numbered wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :p

Nope, you didn't miss anything. This series does tend to jump around a lot, and they never did revealed what Anita thought of the book.

Man, I dont know if that's good because I didn't miss anything or sucks really bad because I hated the episode(since the whole time im nervous that im screwing up the experiance by watching it out of order). Does anyone read the Manga? I wonder if later on there will be an explanation that puts it all together.
Anyways, thanks brightman!! Now I can watch episode 8 in peace. :)

The show was pretty episodic up to that point. The vampire castle episode and the strange town full of actors were just filler. Part of the girl's part time job to earn money.
We didnt have to know what Anita's opinion of the book because I'm sure she did a favorable review. Nenene was just happy that Anita took the time to read it.

That makes sense that it was just filler, it was just really weird the way it threw you into the situation without any background. At least the vampire castle showed you how they got there.
Your probably right that we didn't have to know, it was just the fact that Nenene was there to hear her give the report I was expecting some humor since I figured Anita might not want to admit that she liked it in front of her and might change her report on the spot, and maybe there would be a hint of if the book might have changed her views about reading (although I'm sure it will probably be a very gradual process).

Here's a question from me, and it probably is a spoiler for R.O.D anyway. Does the end of the R.O.D. manga lead into Read or Dream (aka R.O.D. TV), and does it explain what happened to Yomiko?
Or...
******SPOILERS******
Is my theory on the mark that she's with Nancy's "sister" now? Or are we not supposed to know at all? I heard that Nenene used to be Yomiko's roomate, and since I only got to see it once (at a convention and using the R1 DVD), I can't really got back and check. That idea makes it sound like Yomiko's whereabouts are supposed to be known by the viewer.
They're driving me crazy...so much mystery *wiggles fingers*

Yeah, it was one of the more intense episodes. The nudity was pretty gratuitous but we got to see Drake and saw that Junior has Ms Deep's powers. I always kind of felt that the Dokusensha was up to no good.

Yeah, wasn't it great? ^^ Much better than the actors mission...
Does anyone read the Manga? I wonder if later on there will be an explanation that puts it all together.
So far from what I can tell, the manga and the anime have almost nothing to do with eachother (Apart from the characters). The anime jumps around alot. It seems they are now alternating between missions and an actual plot. The manga is basically a bunch of mission stories (at least the first volume). Also, I believe Read or Die, Read or Dream, and R.O.D T.V are basically in no way connected beside the characters (or maybe R.o.D tv is trying to connect the two mangas). I havent read the Read or die manga so i cant back it up.

>That idea makes it sound like Yomiko's whereabouts are supposed to be known by the viewer.
The only thing that really sticks out to me, having watched the OVA before, is that Junior is working for the same people Yomiko did. The secretary he keeps reporting to is Joker's assistant, Wendy. Same character name in the credits even if she isn't as ditzy now ^^.
So since the China agency looks to be becoming the bad guys maybe the three sisters will go work for the British and meet Yomiko that way.
1.
I have read the first 3 books of the manga of ROD, the only thing I notice is the Wong-san has the same last name as the bad guy in the manga and they both work for Dokusensha. Seems to me that Joker is up to something. He seems to work for Dokusensha now (refer to episode 7) but still order Junior to steal the "KEY" from Dokusensha and British Library.
2.
I don't think Drake knows where Yomiko is either. When he talked to Alice in the cafe place near the ancient grave, he kind of wants to know where Yomiko is or he is looking for her.
3. (Spoiler) My doubts, don't really know if i need the spoiler tag but.... might as well use it...
I remember in OVA series, Yomiko was using a piece of "WET" tissue paper to save herself for room full of water. Why the 3 sisters cannot use the paper when it is wet???? It doesn't make any sense to me.
4. (Spoiler) Just some of my thoughts...
I think something happened 4 years ago that made British Library burned to ground has something to do with Yomiko's missing and Anita's unpleasant memory that makes her fear of books. However, we will have to keep watch the series to find out.

Heh. I can actually answer this one.
If you read the manga, then you should know the answer. ;) In volume 1 when Joker is explaining how Yomiko's power works he says that her power is so strong that it will work even if her paper is wet, torn to pieces or burned to ash. In short, that is the measure of the difference between them.

You misremember (or I do), but I believe they said that they Library of Congress burned to the ground. (Can you confirm that I misread it? I don't remember which episode it was said in.) That happened in the OVA and had nothing to do with Anita, but it might have to do with events that resulted in Yomiko's disappearance. Lord knows, after the OVA, I can understand if she wanted to vanish. I thought that this line was important (if it was the Library of Congress) because it places the time of the TV series at 4 years after the OVAs.

I was talking about the TV series (in episode 5) not the OVA series. When Kim-san said something about the mysterious fire happened 4 years ago that burned the British Library into ground.
When Nenene ask Michelle and Maggie why Anita does not like books in episode 6, I wonder if the shodow in the flashback might be Yomiko. Just my wild guess.
I think the TV series sets around 5 year after the OVA series not 4 years because of the Yomiko's age in OVA was 25 but now 30 in the TV. I might be wrong though. also it is not that critical so the producer might not care about that....

Are they gay? Not sure exactly what you mean. Hisame-chan made it pretty clear that she is several episodes ago when she turned down a boy's confession because she is in love with Anita. It's a bit unsure if Anita feels the same way... I'm pretty sure that nobody else is though. Nenene's feelings for Yomiko are quite platonic. (She says...)

11, both Hisa and Anita said they loved each other during her last day at school. They said they were soulmates or something like that, So I guess you could say they're gay, but you could also say their like very close best friends.
I'm confused with what Dokusensha actually is (subbing issues). Does Dokusensha mean the Chinese Intellegence (AonE?) or Literary Mystics Company?

The scene in front of the vending machine in ep 8 can be put up for debate. I'm still not completely sold on it since Hisami never said it directly but there is conflicting evidence. Hisami did seem jealous of Junior when Anita was with him but you could also say that she was surprised to see Anita with a boy. The book Anne of Green Gables was said to have underlying homoerotic themes but it was also a childrens book and if you've ever read it you could interpret Anne and Diana's relationship as being purely platonic.

I'm not sure where Aone got Chinese intelligence but Literary Mystics Company seems correct to me. I think it is at least some sort of company because in Aone's episode twelve the banner inside the building says Dokusensha Corporation. Aone also calls Junior, Ginia so I'm not sure who to go with.

Hmm... What's the Read or Dream manga about anyway? It seems to have the same characters as ROD the TV but is it that different?
it's pretty obvious Hisami is gay, well maybe gay is too strong since we don't know much about it but she is clearly in love (not just attracted) to Anita. Is Anita gay? probably not.
One question though, is that guy who junior is with the same guy who was in the OVA?
Wandering A.I.
2003-11-21, 15:13
Just my opinion, but I don't think she's gay. I'd say it's more common than not at that age to be more comfortable forming your strongest relationships with the same sex and being uncomfortable with the opposite.
>One question though, is that guy who junior is with the same guy who was in the OVA?
Yep, same name in the credits and the same voice actor as in the OVA as well.
I think whoever think that Hisami and Anita are gay, should really just let it go. They are only junior high school students, heck they only look like kids. You see people going around (in real life) going "I love you", even on TV or Concerts or something. Are they gay?
As for the manga/anime/OVA, I would say the only linearity is the characters. The OVA and the anime series kinda links together, the manga is just plan weird.
I mean in the manga, at the end Mr.Joker becomes the mastermind behind the evil plot, while Wendy and Drake quit the British Library and became bodyguard/assisstant of Sumiregawa, and Yomiko went on a trip or something. Also Sumiregawa made her debut like 13 yrs old and wrote a couple ones after, but the book that was in the never mentioned.
While in the OVA, Sumiregawa never showed up (only small reference in epsiode 1), Wendy was still working under Joker, Joker was still the good guy, Yomiko stayed with Nancy's Sister. However it does link somewhat with the Anime, ie.Yomiko's room, Jinbochou.
And isn't Mr.Joker = Mr.Carpenter in the anime? Or was that someone else?
The manga is just weird I would avoid it if you never read it...
Their not gay just soulmates ppl, like the Anne book they both read in ep 11. You don't have to be gay just because you love you best friend very much. Sheesh

There are no gays in this story. They just show the affection between two good friends, like Hisa-chan and Anita-chan. Also, they both are just too young to be gay.
mr. joker is just his code name, like Yomiko's is the paper.
Honestly i've seen an underling plot in EVERY episode since the start and can't wait to get geneon's subbs in a few months.

Just let it go yourself! Of course Hisami is gay, though I have no idea if Anita is. While jr high school students are too young to know what love is, they are most certainly old enough to know what gender they like.
Anita might simply consider herself and Hisame to be platonic soul mates like in Anne of Green Gables, but it is much more than that to Hisame. Hisame turned down a boy's confession of love, telling him that she couldn't be with him because she loves Anita. There is nothing remotely ambiguous in that.
Anita's feelings though are quite ambiguous. She hasn't expressed them at all, at least not out loud.
I don't know Japanese, so I can't tell if soulmate is just a weird translation (or a weird translation from a weird translation as may be the case ;) )or not. However, I have read Anne of Green Gables and the term Anne uses is "bosom friend." It is easy to understand why people who speak english would be confused with the soulmate translation because that term is generally used in reference to a romantic relationship.
"Bosom friend" puts a more platonic spin on the relationship. I would think they are more like best friends.

Hisami called Anita "kokoro no tomodachi" which literally translates to "friend of the heart". Soulmate could be an acceptable translation but I think it could also mean friends who were meant to be with each other without the romantic connotation.
AA-f &KYF fansubs had the best translation because it looks like someone in the group actually read Anne of Green Gables. They translated kokoro no tomodachi as "bosom friends".

Hisame turned down a boy's confession of love, telling him that she couldn't be with him because she loves Anita. There is nothing remotely ambiguous in that. Actually, Hisami is much harder to figure out than that. I think the anime was purposely teasing us with what she meant by "loving" Anita. Once she pulled out Akage no Anne, however, I thought it was obvious that the love she has for Anita is the love that Anne and Diana have - they're "bosom friends." Hisami turning down Tohru doesn't necessarily mean she has romantic feelings for Anita - all she said was that when she was with her, she was so happy she wanted to die, and she didn't understand it. When Anita leaves in Episode 11, Hisa tells Tohru that she's going to be alone again - this means that Anita is the first person she's had any strong relationship too. Turning down a proposal of love could also mean that Hisa simply doesn't feel the same way about Tohru. Not feeling the way she does for Anita could be said about ANY of her classmates, including Tohru. She finally tells Anita "I love you" - but uses the phrase "Suki dai yo". This can be a number of kinds of love, and not all of them romantic. Had she said "Ai shiteru," THEN it would have shown she has romantic feelings, because this phrase is reserved for lovers.
I think Hisa's feelings, if this subplot is left as is, are meant to be analyzed and could have different interpretations. Of course, the show is barely half over, so they could still resolve this differently. Considering the nature of Yomiko and Nancy in the original OAV's being like this, I'm not surprised they're playing with our heads again. Especially considering the wild plot twist they threw at us in Episode 11.
juz let it go... they're juz kids and taking hisa's shyness into account and that anita is like her very first friend, it's understandable that it's juz plationic friendship.
anyway, why read so much into a show?? i liked the series a lot too but it didn't even bother me.. it juz sufficed to me that they will part and most probably will not meet again until the end of the series if anita goes back to the school.
come on... pls dun read sexual innudeos from every show... it will never end... might as well say Eric and Alphonse are gays... well, both are male, travel together, eat together, play together, care so much for each other etc... so what if they are brothers? kinky isn't it?? (my point is, juz cap the homo thing, pls)
it's interesting how many people assume gayness has anything to do with something sexual. many gays will tell you their relationship has nothing to do with sex.
Here's a question from me, and it probably is a spoiler for R.O.D anyway. Does the end of the R.O.D. manga lead into Read or Dream (aka R.O.D. TV), and does it explain what happened to Yomiko?

1. I just recently started watching this anime and am really enjoying it. Some people have called it slow, but the pace has been pretty good for me. There has been a lot of time spent developing the characters, and this has been done really well and humorously. Ooh, and the animation is excellent! Now that the plot is really starting to move along, I can't wait to see what happens after the latest twists (in 15 & 16)
2. Who cares if Chibi-ko or Hisa-chan is gay? While 13 can be old enough to start showing romantic/sexual interest, Anita and Hisami's relationship strikes me as a deep friendship, but full of innocence and naiveté... Keep in mind that neither Anita nor Hisami are used to deep friendships/relationships with kids their own age...Anita because she hasn't been going to school and Hisami because she is shy and anti-social. Give them a few years, and maybe they'll assume romantic/sexual identity labels just for your convenience.
3. "it's interesting how many people assume gayness has anything to do with something sexual. many gays will tell you their relationship has nothing to do with sex." --hunterx
What do you expect in a society where we define intimate relationships as "heteroSEXual" (=straight) or "homoSEXual" (=gay)? Most people would say that love/intimacy is the most important part of a good relationship, but it still all boils down to what kind of squishy flesh you and your partner have and have sex with. What's that? Love and sex aren't the same thing?? There are people who don't have sex much or at all??? Blasphemy! =P This is why when I saw the word polyamory ("many loves"), I started using 'heteroamory' and 'homoamory' too.
16 y.o. Anita (starry-eyed): Onee-chan, I've realized! I'm Hisa-amorous!
Michelle (worried): Isn't that kind of limited?
Maggie (reading a book): ...as long as you are happy...

ROD starnd for Read or Die if that was what you were asking
Not entirely right. In the OVA series it stood for "Read or Die," but when they were making the TV series it stood for "Read or Dream." At first. Then the original title was jetisoned and now it officially doesn't stand for anything at all.

I know that would be logical, but decisions aren't always logical. It doesn't stand for "Read or Die". The original title of this show was going to be "Read or Dream". They changed their minds. It doesn't stand for anything. The full Title of the show is "R.O.D The TV". They added the TV part only to keep people from being confused about the Original OVA series, because it used the ROD abbreviation.
So, would the timeline be like this:
<EDIT>
Okay, so the TV series is basically a rewrite of the Read or Dream manga, okay, I got that. And there was another manga, Read or Die manga?
So the timeline would be:
Read or Die OAV
|
Read or Die manga
|
Read or Dream manga
R.O.D TV (Or whatever it stands for)
(Is that correct?)
About Nancy's child, perhaps it's:
Junior
I must say, after watching of the anime, I can tell this series is going on my shelf, an excellent series. I just love the creative ways they can use paper and the whole idea of a bookworm who uses paper to win. As a writer myself, this series holds a special place with me.

Close, but not entirely the picture.
The "Read or Dream" manga featured Anita, Magi, and Michelle first, and the new TV series was going to be centered around them.
But in the end, they decided that they would like to tie this with the original R.O.D (Read or Die) OVA that they just left it be...so that you can decide whichever one you want to use. Hence, it can be taken as "the TV version of the Read or Dream manga's characters" or "the TV version in continuation to the Read or Die OVA."

That's the R.O.D 3-part OVA.
And at first the OVA series may not seem to be linked to the TV series, but little by little, they tie in the story together...especially after Ep. 10.
A good way to enjoy R.O.D:
1. read the manga "Read or Die" (or the novel "Read or Die")
2. watch OVA "R.O.D -Read or Die"
3. read the manga "Read or Dream"
4. watch TV series "R.O.D the TV"

The ROD movie (actually, it's an OVA) is linked to the series by the characters involved in it (so yes, Nancy is in it). Please refer to the prior posts.
If anything, they probably only gave the title R.O.D TV so that it could be called either Read or Die... or Read or Dream (They probably left just ROD TV so that people who just watched the OVA and never read the mangas would just call it "Read or Die TV" or "Read or Dream TV" for those who are into both the mangas and the anime).
I also would say that the TV series isn't a total re-write of the manga of Read or Dream either (if anything, it is another contiuation of Read or Dream manga involving characters from the Read or Die OVA/manga).
Besides, I just read an interview article that has the director of the TV series and they he and the interviewer just called the series "R.O.D" and nothing more... which could mean that the meaning of the title could be "Read or Die" and/or "Read or Dream" for the TV series, but they just state it as R.O.D TV and nothing more.

Btw., did anyone else notice that the animation went completely downhill after the HongKong showdown? Are they behind schedule? Budget problems? The first half looked pretty good, imo, but the last episodes are below average. The movements look extremely jerky, the faces suddenly became asymetrical in some scenes ... hen.
Sure, sometimes episodes look like that, no big-a-deal, if the story is thrilling, I usually don't care. I just find it strange that the animation quality went down from 'really good' to 'worst I've seen in quite a while'.
If anyone could elaborate and enlighten me, plz ;)

Sure, sometimes episodes look like that, no big-a-deal, if the story is thrilling, I usually don't care. I just find it strange that the animation quality went down from 'really good' to 'worst I've seen in quite a while'.
I anyone could elaborate and enlighten me, plz ;)
Ctrl+V from hagaren thread:
You do realize many animes don't use the same genga studio each episode? While the production studio maybe the same, they usually give certain episodes to different genga studios. So while for one episode, a certain anime may use 12 different "good" genga studios, while the next episode may use 13 "obscure" different genga studios. Depending on production costs (and the importance of that episode), we may give a certain episode to a well experienced studio in Japan and Korea, or we may give a certain episode as a challenge to build up their own experience to some obscure start-up genga company in Japan and Taiwan.
For a more clear view on how current anime is made, I suggest you watch the anime "Animation Runner Kuromi-chan."

In addition, you must also remember that the R.O.D that you are watching is the pre-screener version on air on CS satellite broadcast.
All quality upgrades are made as they are shown on the actual FujiTV broadcast.

Now this is quite interesting. I just checked out the link kj1980 posted in another R.O.D. TV thread (http://wgalland.hp.infoseek.co.jp/200401b.htm). Scroll down, about halfway down you'll find the different versions compared to each other. Quite some changes indeed.
Well then, Geneon, get into gear and release those DVDs as soon as possible ;)

Actually, the changes will be a combo from both the CS broadcast version and the FujiTV version.
Likewise, all quality upgrades will come from FujiTV
On the other hand, FujiTV will censor some scenes that define nudity (the hot spring "treasure" episode) when the CS didn't.
And though I don't know about your country, the DVDs for R.O.D the TV has already been coming out in Japan.

How many people do you think are going to watch a show at 2:58AM (FujiTV Broadcast) unless you love anime?
And how many people are actually going to pay 600 yen ($6.00) to just see one prescreening on pay per view (SkyPerfectTV satellite broadcast), unless you love anime?

The series was licensed before the first episode was released, or quickly after. Im not sure by who though. I'm sure www.animenfo.com would have it listed if you do a search for the show.

It was licensed a while ago :heh: before the series even started.
If you look at the AnimeSuki License List (http://www.animesuki.com/doc.php/licensed/list.html) (link available on the front page of AnimeSuki ([URL=http://www.animesuki.com/)) you will find this entry

No, 19-20 just aired, and i dont know of any place that has summaries for PPV channels. Normally Newtype would have them but they are following the tv series.
I just watched the raws for 19-20...all I can say is...21-22 hurry up!!! (which means I have to wait another 2 week or so...)
Still can't believe they would kill off everyone besides Anita and Yomiko...unless Junior at the end saved them? And it's weird how they wiped Hisami's memories or something...
Actually I just thought about the forshadow scenes back in Epsiode 1, at least michelle and maggie should be still alive...

I just saw episode 19. It ended in a huge cliff hanger. There are only 26 episodes so I know that starting now, the action is gonna get really intense and a lot of the past, memories both good and bad and truths will be revealed. I can't wait. I hope they come out with episode 20 very soon.

If you thought ep19 ended in a huge cliff hangar wait till u see ep20. It'll leave you dooling for more. :)
lol theirs no way they would've killed everyone except Yomiko-san and Anita-san but they make it seem so. I figure Junoir-san planned it all along and everyone in that helicoptor are safe somewhere on ground. As for Hisa-chan losing her memory I find that a little weird. Why would they erase her memory of Anita-san? it just doesn't make any sense. Well anyways, those episodes were awesome can't wait for ep21+.
Also theirs something else thats really bothering me. It's way at the end of ep20 where Apparently Joker-san is looking at a paper with the photo ID's of Junoir-san and Anita-san. What interest me is the title of that paper which was oddly enough labeled Alternative Plan. It seems Joker-san is going with an alternative plan since he thinks Junoir-san and the rest of them are dead. If I'm not making any sense it's because I'm so tired, I think I better get to sleep now. ZzZzZzZz heh I'm losing it. :heh:

Apparently, Hisa-chan is a test subject of Universal Language project. Wendy-kun has mentioned that schools will be included in the upcoming test.

Yeah, I think that's what's going to happen... Probably Anita will be the candidate for the "new Gentleman" now that Junior's uh, "dead" (since Anita's pictures there)
I doubt any of them are dead though... That wouldn't make much sense... There's also the saying that "if there ain't no body, there ain't no death" or whatever

DAHHHH! The suspense...suspense...ARGH! *whacks head on keyboard* Episode 20 just tossed everything I thought was going to happen out the window.
I had totally forgotten about those first couple of scenes in the first episode. Wow, I wonder if Anita's going to die later? They showed her in what looked like a puddle of blood...Awwww...they'd better not. This series could be one hell of a depressing ending. Or it could end like the OAV - somewhat sad, but ultimately happy.
Only six more to go. The wait is killing me.

I don't know why this didn't occur to me before, but...
The characters probably are still alive. We've still got too many plot threads to resolve that involve them. In particular, we've yet to find out why Drake and Maggie are so close. I doubt we'll be left hanging just yet.
And yea, if they do kill Anita, I'll be upset...I'm still hoping for a happy ending for Junior, who just might be quite dead since we know they can monitor him and they would probably know already if he was alive.
This series has me hanging like nothing else this season. Depending on how it ends, it might be my favorite of the new series from this season. And as it already is fighting with Bottle Fairy, that's quite a mantle.

They aren't really that close, she just has the same name as Drake's daughter. As such he feels some connection to her, but that's it. The Maggie he's talking about being very important to him isn't the same one. There might be more to it, but I don't think so.
Anyway I can't wait for the next episodes. Too bad it takes longer than other series, but at least we get 2 at once. This is the best series still running, though FMA comes close at times.

My favorite series this season, and ...well... its very close to becoming my all-time favorite.
It is also abit unusual for Nancy to only care and think about Yomiko, when his son Junior is right next to him...maybe that explains why Junior grouped himself with michelle and left nancy with drake :heh:

Just give her some time to get used to have a kid around, be a mother, and that will change. I always think it's quite "harsh" for people to think that the bond between birth parents and their children should form and become unbreakable “immediately.” If that were true, then there would be no reason to adopt children.

I want to know how Nancy would react when she is told the truth: what happened six years ago among I-jins, Yomiko, and the Special Force. Will she turn back to be an enemy of the Special Force AND Yomiko? I always wonder if she hadn't lost her memory, she would have tried to kill Yomiko by now. After all, Nancy is evil and Yomiko is responsible of killing her lover, Junior’s father. How would Yomiko respond to this “change?” Poor Junior, being stuck in the middle of something that really is not his fault.
And yeah, the three sisters. It is always a strange coincident that they met Anita in the middle of nowhere since Anita is a very important “property” of the Special Force. They wouldn’t have just let her run away and forget about her.

Your not the only one who thinks it a little late in the day to do that tbh, but its not all bad - the previous ending music was appauling. I hope to god they never change the intro music, that's soooo damn quality!
Ooh, that cliffhanger was cruel! I wanted to throw stuff at my computer...but I can't wait for more. I've forgotten a lot of what happened in the OVA, but that's not all that important; I like the TV series a heck of a lot better.
Does anyone else think that Maggie is rather too similar to Junior and Nancy for comfort? Her personality is just like his in many ways, and their eyes are so similar! I hope there's more to the three of them, more of a subtlety in the relationship, than we've seen so far.
Now, what was all that stuff in 21 (in the school) about? It was made clear that the slice of life was artificial, a fabrication for Anita, but...huh? Were they not her real schoolmates? Were they brainwashed? Controlled? What? I didn't get it! Someone explain, onegai!!

Joker's threat seems hardly valid. I mean, yomiko and annita have him by the neck, and Joker threatens them? What gives? Why cant they just threaten him back and say something like "If you do anything to them i'll just kill you now, so call your soldiers off" or something alone those lines? Its just bizzare that the person threatening is the one being held hostage.

Second, Joker is probably just being his pompous ass self. He actually has reason to be so because the good guys havent put up any real offense and aside from Anita and Yomiko's recent actions have just been running. I also believe its psycological warfare on his part. He is acting like they have no chance to make them believe so.

Speaking of which, here in Japan, many people who saw that episode laughed at that scene as Joker, Yomiko and Anita looked like a friendly "mother, father, and daughter."
In the scene shot where Joker is looking at the portable GPS, it looks like Yomiko is the mother, Anita is the daughter and Joker is the dad who is lost looking at a map (much like in other places, men here also don't ask for directions when they are lost).

I don't know if this has been commented before but I love how the anime seems to be well chorerographed with the music. Events during battles occur on noticable beats and so forth. I didn't just notice this until recently.
Some examples I noticed while watching the last couple eps... times are approximate since there are a few groups doing these

Although, the fight scene in ep 20 (?) where Yomiko and Anita fight off the nasty people outside her house in the mountains - where Anita does the flips and spin kicks, i think that coulda been better animated, or at least, given a few more angles kicking the guys head in. I cant remember that far back now, only being amazed by how cool she is, but disapointed with it at the same time.
Im still trying to find the OST with the intro music though. Tis one of the best of any anime imo, i always turn it up load when i get a new episode :D

On a side note, it looks like the FujiTV broadcast version of "R.O.D the TV" has been cancelled. Hmm...I wonder if the Fuji broadcast couldn't get enough ratings? Well, at least there is only two more episodes to go on the SkyPerfect version.
Wow, that does seem fast - even taking to account our releases are already at five volumes (sixth on 3/26). Thanks for the info about Geneon releasing it in your country! Over here, it is done by Sony Music Entertainment - VisualWorks.
At 3.30am jap time im not frikkin supprised!! Silly fools.
I hope they keep the covers on the western ones like the eastern ones - they are well quality!
Hope the AonE release isnt far behind AS

No, I don't know who's the singer of that beautiful song, but I think she has the same voice as Yomiko's voice actor :p
About eps 23 & 24:
I think Anita's reaction is rather stupid, pushing Michelle and Maggie aside, saying "we're not sisters, it was all lie...etc..." she should have known that they weren't real sisters (I mean by blood) since the three of them decided to become sisters by themselves T_T...

Yeah, Anita was acting retarded. She knew that they werent blood related in the first place so it didnt make any sense for her to get angry.

Anita was upset over the fact that their pasts, meeting and desire
to become sisters was forced upon them and their decision with
regards to the matter were manipulated by others. I, personally,
would have little desire to be near someone if I learned that they
were, in a sense, programmed to meet and befriend me. I think her
actions were quite understandable.
Ep. 23:
Why do the sisters all believe that story about their origin anyway? If my bigest enemy would suddenly tell me that my whole life had been a lie I would just laught about it!

When Joker says that maggie and michelle are replaceable, I got the impression that Anita was paired with many sisters before they arrived with Maggie and Michelle. He said 'you three were the ones left'. Now, I can understand why the BL wants everyone to think the same, but i don't know where they're going with recreating novels...maybe London is just a test site?

*sniff* episode 24 was so good *sniff* I didn't expect anything like that, it was beautiful.
This series and the OAV play out something like American superhero comics. The characters don't need to level up or power up or learn anything - they always have their superpowers and they just need to get into a position to use them against the enemy.
I think this is a good idea because it is easier to understand than the typical anime situation. Once you know a characters' strengths and weaknesses you can just enjoy the ride without having to puzzle out why the character is suddenly 10x stronger. Battle scenes are more straightforward and flow better.
I don't recall having seen this in many anime (Kiddy Grade is really the only one that comes to mind). I could be way off here but I know American comics and I just have been getting the same feeling ever since I saw the first OAV.

The thing about that is, it turned out they didn't decide that at all. If you found out that everything you remember is a lie, all the choices you thought you made were really made for you, and you were just being manipulated like a puppet, how would you react? It might not be like Anita did, but it probably wouldn't have a positive effect. :) Besides, that wasn't out of character for her at all. If it was Michelle acting like that from the revelation, then that would be something to complain about.
Anyway, I too would like to know what's up with the books coming to life. Was that a hallucination, or do the huge machines that were set up all over the planet somehow send one the contents of a book telepathically? This was such a good series, I hope they don't ruin it with a crappy ending...

He is supposedly the genius behind the whole rise of Brittain to power during the industrial revolution and after that. (Kinda like the mastermind of the British empire)

Good point. One of the coolest things about the X-Men was that when they first encountered an enemy, they would often get their asses handed to them at times. They were frequently separated, took mountains of abuse and it seemed like their enemies had all the answers. It was a little frustrating to watch this happen to your heroes as it has been in R.O.D. Then they'd regain their balance, Scott would start barking out commands and they would own everything in sight. The sisters and Yomiko all look sufficiently pissed off and grounded now. It's payback time.
Now you got me all nostalgic about my comic collecting days. :)

As a side note, you may also remember Miura Reiko as a former member of the idol group CoCo.
Who is CoCo? They sang numerous songs for Ranma 1/2, most notably "Equal Romance." It was a fairly popular idol group - so much that the original Ranma seiyuus formed their own group in homage to them as DoCo.

Love the series, but gotta nitpick on the plot a little bit...why didn't they just clone a new mr. gentleman to put his knowledge into instead of all the trouble of finding a new body and the ijin's...seems like a lot of trouble. I've only seen 1-17 so if it's been discussed in eps past that then a hundred pardons for my ignorance. :)

For this, you might have to watch the OVA. The reason why Mr. Gentleman could not be cloned is because all of the data that had perfected the cloning technique was destroyed by the ijin's in the OVA. Besides that, the cloning procedures were not perfect at the time either; hence one of the reasons why there is no clone of him (plus, he separated his brain/knowledge in to the different books so that others would not get a hold of it, like Dokusensha... prior to Mr.Joker/Carpenter take over when China was still in control over it). The reason why an ijin's brain is needed for the procedure is because Mr. Gentleman is/was pretty much an ijin himself.
To answer another quote from earlier (asking who is Mr. Gentleman), Mr. Gentleman was a British guy who had the highest IQ in the world (off the scales in test scores). He was the smartest man who had ever lived in history whose speciality was in data (collecting, history, storing, etc., he was pretty much a brain with a super library of knowledge of all sorts ). His main interest though was in knowledge of all types, especially that of literature (hence being the head of the British Library, not to mention why London looks the way it does in episode 24). From his knowledge that he had gained early in his life, he pulled Britain out of the gutter during the industrial revolution (as zalas said earlier) and was able to gain power hear and their because of his influence he had to make England one of the greater powers of the world.

I understand that the data/tech was lost when the Ijin's destroyed it all. But what I'm asking is why not try cloning him before they tried cloning the Ijin's to begin with? (Heck they might even have tried and there was just some reason it didn't work, but Wendy certainly didn't mention it in her report on ep 14) Seems like a big hassle to try finding dna of old dead people that MIGHT can hold his knowledge when they could just try cloning him since he obviously CAN hold his knowledge. Also the brain/knowledge seperation took place sometime after the Ijin incident since he was still alive during the OVA's well after the efforts had begun to find him a new body if I'm understanding wendy's report right.

They wanted to test the process first before cloning him (no side effects to a person with such a genius brain and so forth); plus, he requested it to be done to the ijins first before they tried to process a clone of him because ijins were in the near same standards as Mr. Gentleman, but they never got to that point to clone Mr. Gentleman. Besides that, I think Mr. Gentleman wanted to meet these guys and girls too, but never got the chance (plus he died shortly after the OVAs).
Mr. Gentleman also didn't try to get an ijin's body to put his brain in (sorry, was a bit tired when writing that last post), it was just for testing purposes and getting the pleasure of meeting the ijins as they would have been in the past. Mr. Joker/Carpenter just needs Junior now since he has that ijin brain of his is sutable enough to hold Gentleman's mind in a young body (since it is not possible to make a clone anymore). The ijins were never originally processed to hold Genleman's mind, it was just for tests and fun for him.
Reading previous posting really clears up some of my confusion. Hopefully, someone here can tell me why/how/what.
I have always had this question about this Mr. Gentleman project. They need a brain that has extraordinary capacity to store the knowledge that Mr. Gentleman has/had. That’s why they are looking for a new body/brain. But according to research, a normal human brain has capacity of storing volumes of books like AT LEAST 10 US Congress libraries (is that the correct name of that library?), which is the largest library in the whole world. The books/knowledge they have there is enormous! Being able to store ten times of that in one normal human brain is just estimate numbers. The true capacity could very well exceed that amount/volumes. Based on the information from this series, especially like ep 14, which explains a lot about this project, I don’t have the impression that the original Mr. Gentleman has that much of knowledge, either, although he is indeed a genius with vast amount of knowledge. Therefore, all they need is a normal human brain. Why they go over all this trouble to get a new body/brain is beyond my comprehension.
Perhaps I misinterpret the concept here or the creator of this series did not do his homework?

That particular estimate on the capacity of the human brain is a seriously flawed and naive one. Here's why: It assumes that the only job of the brain is to STORE information, encoded in the connections between neurons in the brain. They estimate a maximum by taking the number of neurons, the total permutations of neuron interconnections, converting to bits, and comparing with the storage capacity of a standard book. This is flawed for many reasons, but the primary one is that even if you could somehow construct a brain with that much knowledge, you could never _look anything up_. Much of the brain (as we understand it today), is actually devoted to complex indexing and referencing of knowledge. Indeed it is those connections between individual facts that make it possible for us to think and make judgement. Some individuals with learning disabilities are savants in terms of storing knowledge, but aren't capable of tying their own shoes because their brains can't properly interpret all the information stored within them. Think of it this way: You could digitize every book that ever existed, burn it to 1 billion CDs in ASCII text, and shovel them all into a warehouse and claim you had the greatest collection of human knowledge ever assembled. But without any way to find a particular piece, your collection is useless.
:topicoff: On a side note, this reminds me a bit of Quantum Information Theory, where sometimes a system has more raw classical information then could possibly be obtained through measurement...
Some thoughts on eps 23 & 24:
I think everything before eps 1 is actually false memory, i.e. make up by the people at the british library. So, the reason the sisters are so upset is because even their first meeting is in reality never exists. Their real memory only started in the first episode when they were given their first assignment together which is to meet nenene.
Also, did anyone notice that michelle and maggie both have some of yomiko in them? Michelle likes to pinch her face which is what yomiko did when she was nervous. Also, Maggie like yomiko has problem relating to others. The only person who doesn't behave like yomiko is Anita. Maybe thats why Anita is the weakest paper user because the DNA transfer is the least successful.

Yeah, that's a good point. Yomiko and the sisters might really be related because joker said they were created from the cells of paper users. Maybe some of yomiko's cell's were used....?Also, maybe it's just me, but if you ignored the hairdos, i think maggie and jr. use the same facial expressions a lot. But, that may just be because they both have a quiet, introverted personality. I thought it was funny when maggie was wearing a wig that looked like jr's hair.

I just found this thread. I AM SO HAPPY!
Comments of mine [many from another forum]. I haven't completely read this forum, so some may be repeats:
This series is really developing well. I don't like the Japanese release schedule. Then again, no one does.
Wendy is one of the most evil characters I have seen! She's a British drow.
Joker is just evil, too.
Nancy is actually the one that supposedly drowned in the OVA. She's still cool, and her combat abilities are coming back.
Drake [I think] doesn't have any special powers. He's just a combat genius and isn't afraid of making a couple sacrifices.
Yomiko is still a ditz. I think she's a great heroine. Not perfect [if you've seen her acrobatics in the OVA], but strong willed and has the most unique power I know of.
Anita may be the weakest of the three sisters when it comes to scale of paper use, but she is the most physically adept, which allows her to overcome her very short range paper use. She was also a Gentleman candadite. She is growing up nicely in this series.
Michelle is my favorite character. She is more of a ditz than Yomiko, but can be serious when it is needed. She is the glue that keeps the MAM together. Also, I find her archery a very nice twist to the paper use ability.
Maggie is still an enigma to me. She is an introvert, honest, and simply a good girl.
Has anyone else noticed the demonization/idiotification of the West in this anime? Evil British, idiotic US President who wets his pants, agressive US military?
This is a great series. Too bad it's about to end...
Also, did anyone notice that the Gentlemen Books are basically like The One Ring from LotR?
I mean Anita throws it in a fire of burning helicopter fuel, and Joker is just like "oh, ok, go get it out of the wreckage" and it's like slightly burnt on the cover and that's it LOL

agree on everything, the demonization of the west is pretty evident in the OVA too.. idiot american president etc etc. Although making it a british conquest for ruling the world is sort of strange since the british is still the west. The acceptance of the British Libraries plans by the govts all over the world is a little bit hard to swallow, it's unlikely that everyone except our little group of heroes would be the ones opposed to it. Other than that great story

Yea, it sadens me how Wendy has changed from loveable fumbling secretary into hard-nosed-gun-ho-antagonist-negociating-bitch.
Nancy didnt drown in the OVA - she asphixiated in the low altitude but they recovered her and put her in hospital. A short time after she discovered she was cookin home-stylee but was too out of it (from meds or brain damage?) to notice them taking her child (Jr.) away.
Apart from Wendy - its superb how they have kept so true to the OVA. OOoo and the new start is great; when Yomiko falls over the pillar whilst reading - i fell on the floor laughing watching that.
Maggie is still an enigma to me. She is an introvert, honest, and simply a good girl.
Yet, loving and deadily serious and gets the job done when need be. She doesnt express her emotions often, but you can read it in her actions, especially in the latter half of the series imo. I feel in the first half she was a tad neglected, animation and story wise - im glad they focused in on her a bit later on with Nenene.
I just wanna give all 3 of em a real big hug :D:D :)
i think maggie and jr. use the same facial expressions a lot. But, that may just be because they both have a quiet, introverted personality. I thought it was funny when maggie was wearing a wig that looked like jr's hair.
But Jr. was the product of 2 "deep" (i forget the term) parents - so he has "uber deep" (??) traits perfect for implanting "Mr. Gentlemen" into him? He's not of paper user.
I still dont understand how the sisters were "made" into paper users though? Were they born and accelerated growth like Jr. or just kidnapped !? and genetically manipulated?

As i understand it - it was BEFORE they met, not the first episode - cause they had all the books already (although that could have been setup as well). They were just sent out, and told to go to this place where they met each other and got on with it from there.
About the face-pulling thing - that's just something people do. I had my face pulled to bits in the 2nd year of uni by one of my other flat mates and i seriously dont think she's related to yomiko.
Would someone please explain to me WHY Joe is turning the world (starting with the UK) into books??? I thought he was just for a sort of "total world communism/dictatorship" of absolute free information (which i actually would kinda want - not at the cost of what he's done to get it though), not a twisted reality of fantasy = reality?

I doubt merging the worlds of reality and fantasy is Joker's true intention, but something in preparation for the resurrection of Mr. Gentleman... or the side effects of those books? :p

Well, I think their "current" memory of how they met is false, since it's shown in the photos that they already met and knew each other far back as selected subjects of Dokusensha. So I guess it's safe to say that "first mission" where the three met in an old cathedral(?) is fabricated memory by Dokusensha.

I couldn't care less about Wendy. I wanted my cute Sumiregawa back @_@;;
There were two Nancy's in the OAV. One beat and drowned the other. The victor eventually died in space. I believe the Nancy they regained at the end of the OAV is the one that "drowned" in the water, since that would be the easiest body to recover. Keep in mind that the "evil Nancy" drowned, since the "good Nancy" tricked the head I-Jin to kill him. The "evil Nancy" had been closer to the head I-Jin than the "good Nancy" and thus the baby was probably hers.

The spoiler is the point I was trying to make in my above post. The original died in space. The clone survived the drowning, but lost her memory due to lack of oxygen.
This is apparent when Joker remarks that if she regains her memory, she'll be tried in court.

Not necessarily so. The clone is newly created, at least thats the impression that I got since the clone is suppose to replace the original Nancy after she turns good after meeting Yomiko. The "good" Nancy may have done some pretty horrible things in her past while we are not even sure how old the "bad" Nancy is. So it makes more sense to tried the "good" Nancy then the "bad" Nancy in court. I guess we may never know for sure. Unless it is shown to us in the final two episodes...
As for Wendy, I think there is still a chance that she might repent. She is blinded right now by her anger at Yomiko for destroying the library and her love for Joker. Lets not forget that Nancy in the end did the right thing after recognizing how evil her boyfried is. The same could happen to Wendy too after she is shown the truth.

Well, the "bad" Nancy was easily accesible whereas the "good" Nancy would've been hard to retrieve. Even if they retrieved the "good" Nancy, what would they do with the "bad" Nancy. I doubt they'd just throw her in the trash.

Also don't know if anyone notice...as they try to do scenes to flash back to epsiode 1's beginning,
Anita's "death" just really doesn't match...where the paper flies around really doesn't match what it looked like blood coming out
Finally 25-26 is out...kinda a anti-climax end, but I guess it's not bad...
They finally showed maggie, Drake's daughter You can kind of tell that in like ep 22 or so when every time he said Maggie, he would look at her. maybe this didn't need one but oh well. That is kind of nice they did though. I can't wait to see those last 2 eps b/c the cliff-hangers are killing me.

The Read Or Die manga has not been licensed. I did a good chunk of the Volume 1 translation. It's nothing really spectacular. Then again, I've only read volume 1 :)
Yeesh never though i'd be annoyed that something wasn't licensed...will be alot harder to find this way...but off i go. :twitch:
Not necessarily so. The clone is newly created, at least thats the impression that I got since the clone is suppose to replace the original Nancy after she turns good after meeting Yomiko. The "good" Nancy may have done some pretty horrible things in her past while we are not even sure how old the "bad" Nancy is. So it makes more sense to tried the "good" Nancy then the "bad" Nancy in court. I guess we may never know for sure. Unless it is shown to us in the final two episodes...This is incorrect. While the original I-jin repository probably only had one Nancy, the second clone would have been made not long after the lab was destroyed and the I-jin went rogue. They knew about each other--they would have had to--because they worked in tandem through the OAV. Go back and watch it again, carefully; "good" Nancy is left-handed while "evil" Nancy is right-handed. You can tell that the Nancy in the TV series is the "evil" one using this.

I couldn't care less about Wendy. I wanted my cute Sumiregawa back @_@;;
There were two Nancy's in the OAV.
I cant even remember who that Sumiregawa was?! Got a pic? Its been too long since ive watched the OVA, but im very VERY sure they mention recovering nancy from the rocket (they dont say how) and she had asphiated (the word sticks in my head when they are describing what's wrong with her at the hospital). Even though i think what youve said makes MORE sence, im gonna have to go back and watch the last episode to confirm my sanity cause there's too many frikkin Nancy's floating round.
The clone survived the drowning, but lost her memory due to lack of oxygen.
Ah so you're saying her asphixiation was from partial drowning?? Ahh so cause both Nancy's were clones of each other, each would be as good-bad changable as the other??? :twitch: :twitch:

O-M-G I think my brain just exploded. You look into FAR FAR too much detail, im gonna have to go back and watch it again now. What pisses me off even more is i was considering bringing the OVA up with me to uni on the weekend but left it behind :frustrated:
So in the OVA - they were both as good and bad as each other. Cause even identical twins differ in persona and they are the closest thing to human clones.

Nenene Sumiregawa (the cute one ;) )
http://cupped-expressions.net/rod/die/manga2/manga02_page149.jpg
*hugs his R.O.D. manga*
Ask for a picture of her and you shall recieve!
It would have been great if, for the most part, every reference to Nenene hadn't been mistranslated in
original R.O.D. OVA. Both fansubbers and Manga Entertainment translated her name on the post-it notes
as "Up! Up! Up!"
It's understandable cuz back when it was translated, the person "Sumiregawa Nenene" didn't exist yet..(actually if the translators have read the manga they would pick it up)
And actually the person under Nenene's left arm is Wendy :hmm:

Hmm lets see. I forgot what episode number it was but the one where Junior touched one of the books and everyone saw what happened the day the British Library burned down. Yomiko was talking to Joker about Nancy's baby and Joker teased her by saying something like "Your boyfriend Doni is still Alive, but now he is in this form" and then he was about to show her on a screen then it blinked out. THAT was the point at wich Yomiko went mad and burned down the library not the part about Junior. (The Junior thing affected her deeply but the Doni thing pushed her over the edge) And anyone who knows the manga knows that Doni was a paper user at some point but it went away.
I still could be wrong though. We shall see.
At the end of ep26, there is a statute under water which showed M.A.M. This is the same statute that the 3 sisters carved when they met in Hong Kong. This implies that whatever has showed in the series had adctually happend and not made up.

Actually I think it doesn't take much time to fabricate all the needed "evidence" of those fake memories... I mean, it's natural for the sisters to go check up on the place they first met, so it's natural to make the scene fit their memories. About where that statue is... I guess in Hongkong, which has sank underwater and where the three sisters supposed to meet.
Episode 25 and 26 are one of the most anti-climactic disappointing endings,
the conflicts ended too easily, and they don't explain who or what Mr. Gentleman is. And the reason that they merge reality and fantasy is for defense purpose... oh well... anyway US forces are always sitting ducks for some ultra-tech weapons in ROD...
Ah so you're saying her asphixiation was from partial drowning?? Ahh so cause both Nancy's were clones of each other, each would be as good-bad changable as the other???
not exactly. Both Nancy's were clones made from the Ijin genes. They were both evil at the start, but one Nancy betrayed her leader and became good later, while the other remained "evil". It's not like the "good-evil" thing comes from the genes. It's from their experiences after they were made. I guess you could say that they are as good-bad changable as any normal human beings. As we see in the TV series, the remaining "evil Nancy" became "good" in the end.
Also when you see Nancy and Yomiko first, there's a scene where a note is inside a book Yomiko had, and on that note it's written "please take care of my sister", which is what the "good Nancy" told Yomiko when she decided to go to space and die with the Ijin leader. and the "my sister" here is obviously referring to the nearly-drowned "evil Nancy".

I dont get (cause i dont understand the language probably) when Nancy went off to India (?) or whereever she was holding up a photo of her/her sister and asking about it. Is she looking for her? Did she not die?? Hmmm
I couldnt understand what was being asked or whatever, but thatll probably come with the fansub just like most of the details of the episodes

Logically, I would agree. But going by how Happily-Ever-After the rest of the ending seemed to be, it would be jarring to see the inscription on the statue as such. In any case, from what I could see of the expository scenes, it wouldn't be too far off to assume that the three sisters were each sent (in their own ways) to the church to "meet", rather than implanting the memory of their meeting. Of course, this would rely a whole lot on Michelle and Maggie having the sort of personality to take Anita into their care... but seeing as how neither Michelle nor Maggie seemed to question their lack of background, I suppose that sort of mental block wouldn't be out of the question.

I must say...I am very disapointed in this series.
The OVA was stunning, it did what a 26episode series barely ever does, and all in 3 episodes. Every fight scene wonderfully timed with the music, emotion and such. It was a work of art. I come to see this series...it's like the ran out of money after the first episode and hurried through the rest. The art is sloppy, messy and lacking...this is extremely evident in the last four episodes. Thank god for them re-doing fine detail for the dvd releases....

Well what do you expect? OVAs tend to have the same budget has the whole series so you shouldnt expect a similar quality of animation. A few episodes were significantly crappier drawn than the others ill admit - maybe they should fire that studio? Also OVAs are on action and "one hit wonder" mentality, rather than significant character development and story like the series. The last 2 episodes were drawn well imo, a few of the others however werent. If you read previous posts - the fighting is often in time with the music too, especially Anita's handywork.

I'm sorry, but the OVA was just an action extravaganza. The TV series had much more character development and is a bit more touching. It is true that the TV series is a bit slow at the start, but that's how you get to know the main characters and their personalities. It is pretty nice they manage to synchronize the TV show with EVERY ROD STORY. By mid-season, the TV show was pretty much on full throttle, unlike some shows which wait till the last 2 episodes or so.

I don't see why everyone was complaining. I thoguht it was the perfect ending to the series. I'm also a sucker for a Big Happy Ending. After all the torment these people went through, I liked seeing something good happen from it.
Just a note on the animation - as has been mentioned before, the crappier parts are being redone for the DVD releases in both Japan and America. It's not uncommon for a series to air partially incomplete, then be fully complete for the DVD releases (Hellsing comes to mind).
Time to get my pre-order in for the first R1 volume - this one's a keeper:)

the problem is not really about the very ending. I have nothing against big happy ending, although it's a bit lame, especially when you see Joker managed to went through it in one piece after doing all those things. However the final fight before the end is absolutely lackluster. It's supposed to be the final confrontation, the big showdown, and there are so much build-up to it... and then wasted as it's finished so fast and so simple, all the build-up is wasted, it's like "huh? it's over?" -____-

I saw that Joker WAS punished - by being ruined by one of his own creations. He often looked down on the disabilities of others and took complete advantage of Nancy. Sure, killing him would have been nice...but being set on a mental level of the tune of Nancy after her accident was more fitting a punishment.
The ending of the series showed why nobody needed to die - despite their actions, the people in the British Library were not truly evil. Yomiko believed this - remember, she wouldn't even kill Joker after everything that had happened between them. The ending was a sort of validation that Yomiko's way was not impossible. If Yomiko had wanted them all dead, she was more than capable of carrying it out. But as Drake observed, Yomiko saw good in people who seemed despicable. It was impossible for her to truly hate someone. For this series to have an ending true to the theme,
I liked that the battle wasn't one of explosions, but of wills. It was a change of pace, but a unique one. I particularly liked Junior declaring that his body belonged to him. Poor little guy...by the way, him zapping Joker's head was a theory of mine. Did anyone else get exactly what Junior did to Joker? I felt that perhaps he loaded him with all the feelings and memories that Junior had gained from Gentleman and it completely overwhelmed Joker, but I could be wrong.

I guess Junior just somehow transferred what he received from the gentleman books to Joker. It'd be a proper punishment if Joker stayed zapped, but it seemed that he recovered shortly after...
about evil or not... well, I think it's just the stereotypical japanese anime/game main villain who's trying to achieve his/her own dreams by sacrificing innocent people's lives. And I think that already passes for "evil".

His eyes went from blank to normal so I think he's ok.
The ending was kind of a let down for me as well. All that momentum built up and it just faded into the end. Ah well, I love the 2nd ed song.
I don't think there can be an ending that satisfies everyone. If they had included a long (up to an entire "extra" episode, even) epilogue about where everyone was now, people would complain that the anime was dragging too long with unnecessary filler.
And the last fight was certainly dramatic enough for me. Nenene sacrificing her new novel for the paper-users was pretty cool, and I liked the fact that they didn't turn it into some great big burly-brawl. There isn't really any way for them to present a real challenge to the superpowered heroes otherwise; the Dokusensha big bloke died in the sinking of Hong Kong, and if he were brought back, there would need to be some explanation of why.
Overall, I loved this anime. It had more than enough plot twists to keep me watching long after I should have stopped and done my homework (curse you Psych paper), but it resolved a great deal of them by series' end (unlike, say, Spiral). For everything else, I suppose there's fanfic.
the ending was definately anti-climatic. Was anyone surprised when yomiko's plan failed miserably? nope. I didn't like the way the ending was told but I liked the conclusion to the series. Everyone got back to normal.. for the sake of the girls because they were just taking one loss after another. I was relieved to find no one died.
A little more on joker would have been nice but like all anime endings, there are really no bad guys, or should I say winners and losers. I've seen this type of ending too many times not to be bothered by it anymore.
Btw what happened to anita's girlfriends memory? did they fix it back?

That ending was the most horrific anti-climacticly putrid ending ever! -_- it doesn't deserve the title or Read or Die! (or Dream, if you so choose.) Read or Die is a masterpiece! That was CRAP! Ending It as a bit anti-climatic, but overall I really enjoyed the series. I watched the first 5 or 6 episodes and wasn't sure if I'd stick with it, I didn't really like the new characters(3 sisters) much, but they grow on you.
The one thing I really want answered from the ending (well 2 things).
#1)What happened to Joker? It seemed like his eyes went back to normal, is he going off to commit evil? It seemed like Wendy wasn't TOO surprised he got up, so does he have like an hour each day he walks into the woods or something? Yeesh.
#2)Did Anita lose her powers when she came into contact with that device? Can she still control paper?
Oh yea one more
#3)Does Junior have his powers back? He couldn't fade through those hoses, so I'm wondering if whatever was inside Junior zapped his gene for powers, much like the device zapped Anita in the finale?

The ending fight
come to think of it, it's really no surprise that Joker failed. He is stupid enough to hire idiots who will take away all the paper the sisters have, but not have enough common sense to search Nenene. the situation is resolved just too easily. Yomiko and sisters don't have paper, Nenene pulls paper out of her shirt... it's like child's play...

There probably only one thing that i really liked tho in the ending...
And that was Nancy. I dunno, she did her piece, and she's a GREAT character... and it leaves room for her to do something else...
but I wouldn't want that to happen because they crapped the ROD TV ending
I have to say the ending is a big dissapointment. I was hoping for a more action pack final, instead all we got is one short fight scene. However as a whole, I would say this is still an incredibly good series. I have a great time watching it.
With Joker recovering from his trauma and Wendy putting down her apron, my guess is they are setting it up for the possiblity of a sequel. Think about it, all the villains are still alive. They never show us Yomiko's boyfriend. I know some speculate he is the paper user from Dokusensa, but we only saw him fall from the building so we don't really know if he is dead or not. Also, the Gentleman might still be alive. All these has the making for an interesting sequel or OAV. Hopefully, if they decided to make one, they would give them enough money. It is pretty obvious from the quality of the animation that the current series is underfunded. Hopefully the success of ROD TV would inspire them to spend more money.

Get the DVD's, guys. The version shown on PPV (which is the one that gets fansubbed) is some sort of "beta" version of the series so a lot of the animation and background are some sort of placeholders. The version that gets shown on Fuji TV and the version that gets released on DVD look much better and quite a few scenes were completely reanimated. You can check out the comparisons (mostly for the PPV and TV versions--the DVD version uncensors a few things from the TV version so that one's even better) at http://wgalland.hp.infoseek.co.jp if you want to see just how much is changed.

I hate to say it but I highly doubt that there will be a sequel. Despite the questions left in the end, there doesn't seem to be enough to have a sequel. Animes such as Hikaru No Go and Shaman King and E's Otherwise have open endings but I don't see any sequel in site for them so I highly doubt one for ROD the TV.

Ah, i always wondered why Fujitv was behind in showings. Good to know - hopefully the DVDs released in the summer will be the final, better quality ones :D

We obviously didn't watch the same ending because...
It was obvious that Joker had become Gentleman at the end when his eye turned a different color.
I really liked the series but the first 14 episodes were the best parts of this series. As a whole I like s-CRY-ed a little better for feeling more complete. I was expecting something more epic than what was concluded.

Joker couldn't have possibly become Gentleman, or he would have been capable of carrying out Gentleman's plans. Since his mind wasn't capable of holding Gentleman (only Junior's was able to handle him), he was damaged by the flow of information (much like the earlier experiments we saw).
I feel that his eyes changing are just a sign that he's a little more lucid now, but I doubt he'll ever be capable of functioning as a normal person, let alone as the kind of guy he was before.
I still liked the ending, nagging questions and all. I just don't think they needed a great big explosion and mega-fight scene to properly end the series. Much of ROD TV was a character drama, hence why reclaiming Junior wasn't about blowing things up, but Junior asserting himself.
About Junior's powers - it was never fully explained because nobody on the show understood them. Wendy theorized that he must have damaged something inside himself when he ripped out the tracking device. Since we know that Nancy was similarly damaged in the OAV but was still using her powers, I like to think that Junior's could come back after awhile. But that's just spec, not anything substantial.

Another possiblity:
Part of the Gentleman is now in Joker. The other parts are in Anita and Junior. Therefore by gathering all three individuals, the Gentleman can be reconstructed just like from the books.

agree on everything, the demonization of the west is pretty evident in the OVA too.. idiot american president etc etc. Although making it a british conquest for ruling the world is sort of strange since the british is still the west. The acceptance of the British Libraries plans by the govts all over the world is a little bit hard to swallow, it's unlikely that everyone except our little group of heroes would be the ones opposed to it. Other than that great story
btw I like yomiko more :)
LOL, don't feel too bad since they also sank Hongkong...Also Japanese Government itself portrait as quite week since they give up their territory to Joker pretty much without a fight.

lol yup you could say that they demonized Chinese a lot too. In the end, China and US lose, everyone else win.

In eps 20, after the helicopter crashed, Anita return to the middle school she used to attend in early eps. When she met the girl "Hisami" again. Hisami said "Who are you?".
Can anyone explain this? About the three sisters, their memory in hongkong were fake. But everything that happened after they met Nenene is real, right?
Questions
1. So the first time they(3 sisters) actually met each other was when Nenene arrived Hongkong in episode 1?
2. Why Hisami don't know anita in eps 20? Am I misunderstanding something?
Thanks in advance.
I noticed no one answered you but I just saw RoD TV and I think I can answer you.
1) The 3 sisters meeting randomly and living together was a fake memory. They were PLACED there after Anita's clones failed to become as powerful and versatile as Yomiko. Maggie and Michelle were the only 2 left and the government forced them to live together. I don't know where their real memory starts but it's before they meet Nenene.
2) Hisa lived in part of that city that Joker remodeled using the information of the Gentleman Books. He wiped out all the book stores in that area and forced a reload of history in that area, very possible considering the power of the G-books. Hisa didn't remember Anita because Anita didn't exist for her, she wasn't part of that 'Alternate Plan' that Junior? showed joker. They wanted to see if they could control the population. Looked like it worked.
It sounds so good from people's discussion. I'm still on episode 12 and have no access yet to episode 13. It's a pain to wait for the DVD release on October 26 which will probably have episodes 9 to 12. :eyebrow: Or maybe they will add episode 13 just for the hell of it?
Does anyone know if Yomiko will actually fight intensely in this series? I managed to see episode 17 and she's in there but she didn't do anything. Also, did Nancy get a new voice actress? She sounds super feminine compared to her voice from the OVA. It's weird but it's good to see new and old faces together and it's getting so much more exciting. I can't wait! :D
Yomiko does more fighting but if you are looking for pure action keep an eye on Anita.
I don't like the English VA of Nancy, I'll check to see who it is and if it is different from the movie.

ROD's one of my favorite!
Ep 14 sucks---its just info no action---
Everything starts to kick-in around ep 15 when they finaly found Yomiko and Nancy.... Ep 18 -Junior met his mom... cute scene where he pointed his gun at her ---- hehe
The ending was quite satisfying. Although, I would really love it if they continue and add another OVA series and focus more on Anita and Junior.....
Yeah, it would make a good fanfic....

Where did you hear the English VA of Nancy from the TV series? The R1 DVD is not out yet and as far as I know, only G4 is airing ROD The TV and they have not broadcasted any episodes with Nancy in it. :twitch: Anyway, I was comparing the Japanese voices.
I just saw episode 20. The first fight was pretty silent. However, the second fight in that episode was a RUSH! Look at Anita go!!! I was impressed and it ended in like...10 seconds? 15? Wow. Hopefully, they'll have better action scenes like that in episode 1. The last part of episode 20 was...shocking.
Also, does anyone know if Nancy will fight? I would like to see her fight again. I know in one of the R2 DVD covers, they have a Nancy in civilian clothes holding a gun. In episode 17 when Junior was holding the gun, I thought Nancy would pull her technique on us! But no...

OMG You are right, I'm thinking of the Japanese VA for Nancy in RodTV and the English VA for Nancy in RoD. Bad Bad Forbin! Sorry I was having a flashback and the HORRIBLE subs I got in the Chinese version of RoDTV. I forgot the latest release of English RoDTV is 12.
Nancy fights, but less than Junior, he's the male star of the show. (Though Chase steals the show I think in the male category. Everyone already knows that Anita is the female star).
So does Nancy remember her old memories or what? What episodes does she fight in? Who's Chase? Sorry, I'm too excited to wait for my downloads to finish.
Heh Chase is the blonde money guy from ROD. He shows up in RoDTV at Episode 10? (The Ecchi Episode!! Hehe).
Nancy shows up in 18. She does fighting in most of the action episodes after that.
Yes she has her memories back...sorta
Do you mean the hot springs episode? That guy is Drake...
Crap! It is Drake...I messed up again...why am I calling him Chase?

Finished watching this series... few questions
1) Why did Joker want Nenene so much? At first I thought he wanted her as a backup for Gentleman but after she "escaped", even though he was starting the project, he just had to recapture her and make her go inside the chamber. Why don't bad guys ever kill their enemies when they have the chance?
2) What is the importance of Nenene? Everybody seems to fit into the whole Gentleman plot but she's just there...
3) Does Junior think of Michelle more of a mother figure than Nancy?
4) Why is Joker-san called Joker-san?
5) Whats an I-Jin?
6) How can Nenene hide a stack of paper under her shirt without being noticed OR falling out when she was swinging her arms around yelling at Joker?
7) Where is Michelle and Junior at? Do they live together now and Maggie/Anita seperately? If Nancy stays with Junior and Yomiko stays with Nancy and then Nenene stays with Yomiko, does that mean they all live in the countryside now and Maggie/Anita live by themselves?
How many volumes are there in Shin Read or Die? And does the anime follow the manga's ending?

1. Nenene is NOT a backup of anybody. You are confused. Nenene was first the primary target of Dokusensha in being the main component of the "Universal language" project, a means for Dokusensha to dominate the world via mass brainwashing. (similar to what the British Library ended up doing. But they are NOT the same.) But since they didn't have a "Mr Gentleman", they needed someone to write the script for the world to be. Nenene was a very good script writer, as such they need her.
(If you wondered why they couldn't just hire someone else, Nenene was an unmatched genius. Back in the days before she stopped writing, Nenene was known to type two different novels on two separate laptops in the same time with her two hands, while dictating a third story on microphone. That's why Yomiko worships her.)
(extra note: She managed to write a new novel in a few days while she was captured by Joker. Did you think she was scribbling non-sense?)
Anyway, Dokusensha underestimated her brain-power, and was unable to force her to become their story writer. Joker doesn't actually need Nenene at all, but captured her alive purely as a hostage.
2. Nenene, as I said, only fits into Dokusensha's plans. Otherwise she isn't that vital except as motivation for Yomiko to snap out of her depression.
3. Junior can have as many mother-figures as he wants.
4. Joker is the code-name short hand, like "The Paper". It is also the short version of "Joe Carpenter." But no one knows if Joe Carpenter is his real name or not. I don't believe "joker" meant "clown", but more like the trump card in a card game...
5. I-jin are the famous people in history who are, in ROD universe, exaggerated in their powers as to make them super-powered. People with superpowers are actually fairly common in the ROD universe, so there isn't any reason to think people in their past won't have powers too. Think of I-jins as mutants who have powers and/or abnormal intellegence. Some of the I-jins in ROD OVA had extra steam-powered cybernetics installed.
The DNA of past I-jins long-dead were stored in the British Library until they were stolen by Dokusensha. It is assumed that in the OVA, the Chinese made the I-jins from the stolen DNA, but were unable to control/command them. The I-jins rebelled, left Dokusensha, and attacked the world.
6. She has large breasts. Any more questions?;)
7. Yomiko and Nenene are on a long book-buying excursion, though in reality they are actually acompanying (right-handed) Nancy in her search for her clone (left-handed) sister, as she believe she is still alive somewhere. The "left-handed" Nancy was first sighted in India in the OVA, so they went there to track down people who knew her. Anyway both Nenene and Yomiko still have their own houses, and there is no way Yomiko would ever stop getting new books to read, so living in the middle of nowhere is out of the question. Yomiko's house, though big enough for a family of 20, is too stuffed full with books for anyone but her to live in. Nenene's apartment is still not big enough to fit everyone, so naturally using Yomiko's holiday home isn't such a strange idea.
Anyway, what stops them from visiting each other?:)
NOTE: You did realise that the "Good" Nancy was left-handed, and the ROD TV Nancy is right-handed, right?

I did not say Left-Landed Nancy is still alive as a fact. I am saying the Right-handed Nancy believes that she is still alive. Hence the trip to India.
After all, RL Nancy probably have enough guilt in her to at least do this much for her sister. Hope is a powerful thing.
EDIT: Other than hope, it's also a fact that no one actually saw LH Nancy dead. It's awfully difficult to kill an I-jin, so RL Nancy is counting on her sister's resilience too. "I an't believing she's dead until I see her corpse", kind of thing. But won't it be cool if LH Nancy IS alive? Junior will have an auntie! :)

That is for her to know... We aren't told, but there must be a reason why RL Nancy went on her quest, even if only because she felt it in her bones. Kind of romantic, don't you think?
Then again, I have a desire to trust the intuitions of people who have superpowers...;)

Hmm I read that differently.
BTW R-Nancy was in India in the OVA during the Satellite Shot. That prompted Joker to Realize that L-Nancy was part of the Enemy (Though he didn't know they were different back then) in India Left and Right Switched Places. The one who put the braid in Yomiko's Hair was L-Nancy, after India, R-Nancy took over because Goku failed.
R-Nancy is in India trying to find out about herself. What kind of person she was. She just wants to discover who R-Nancy was. (Well we know she wasn't a nice person). L-Nancy is dead.
And Nenene is VERY important to the Gentlemen Project. She is his 'Disciple'. The one who will spread the word of Gentlemen around the world. He had many of these during the height of the British Empire (Remember the Empire used to span over 50% of the known world back then). Gentlemen needs a skilled writer to spread his word. Pretty much any skilled writer will do, but Nenene was certified by Dokusensha as one of the Great Ones. Why bother looking for another when they have her right there?

To be exact, in the OVA RH Nancy swapped over when she appeared with Yomiko's new suit-case, holding it in her right hand, just before leaving India.
You can even know who won the Nancy/Nancy fight ahead of time, since the winner climbed out of the water with her left hand first.
I need to check the final TV episode again... I still believe she went to India to track down her sister? You clearly saw her holding up a picture of LH Nancy to a street vendor, asking questions. The vendor pointed at her, likely saying "isn't the person in the photo you? To which RL Nancy shakes her head.
I really can't interpret that scene, as well as her letter to Junior, as anything but proof that she is still hoping to find LH Nancy alive. Can't find the DVD right now, for some reason though...:heh:

One more thing.
Why did Junior seperate everybody before he faked his death (and not drug Anita with the rest)? And why did he betray his friends then rebetray Joker?
How many volumes are there to Shin Read or Die? Thx.

Read or Die has 1 Volume that I am aware of. (Due out next month!)
Read or Dream has 2 that I am aware of (Not Licensed).
Anita and Yomiko were the 2 most likely to know where the book was, so they were left behind.
He didn't betray the girls, he mostly likely did it to get them away from the troops.
He separated them because it would be harder to find them all.

What do you guys think about what happened to Joker in the end? (yes this has already been asked, but I'd like a fresher opinion :)) He seemed to get infused with Gentleman memories/essence/what have you, by Junior-kun and was totally in a comatose like zombie state being taken care of by Wendy, and then we see his pupils regain "life" if you will symbolizing he's "awakened" and we see him run off somewhere and then Wendy finding him not there and acting like it happens all the time... hmm.... Also on the subject of Nancy going to India at the end, I thought it was because she was going around the world righting the wrongs that she did in the past as a bad I-Jin with her baby's daddy a.k.a. Junior's father Sojun Ikkyu (a zen buddhist from the 15th century) in the OVA. Thanks for voicing your thoughts, I look forward to them :)

This actually really surprises me, The TV series of R.O.D serously devolopted the realationship between Anita and Hisami. But when I look I cant find a single Fanfiction thats for the two. Maybe someone can answer why this exactly is. Maybe R.O.D just never hit the mainstream very well

2 Loli's in a yuri relationship? There probably is.
BTW According to Geneon, RoD the TV probably made them more money than any of their other titles in recent years. So I would consider it as mainstream as it can get.
The 2nd half of the series was such a let down ;S
1st half was fun to watch. OVA was awesome.
Really? I thought it ended really well - but then it's probably my favorite anime show of all time.
It's about as mainstream as non-Pokemon/Yu-Gi-Oh anime gets - it was aired during the TechTV (G4, whatever they're calling it now) anime block in the US - so that puts it on par with Last Exile, Rahxephon, etc in terms of exposure.
I dunno, i don't remember much about the actual show.
But i remember them building a climax and then handling it in a crap way. It was such a let down.

They're showing this cool new anime on anmax, t's called R.O.D. the tv. I really wanted to watch it but I can't because of it's odd show time. I just saw 2 or 3 episodes and I think that it's pretty good.
So I was wondering, do any of you guys know anything about this anime, well if you do then can you please tell me.
Stop watching Rod the TV and Get your hands on RoD the OVA.
Because after episode 17 you will not know what's going on as those 2 shows merge at that point.
I don't know if that's true. I watched R.O.D. the TV before I saw Read or Die (the OVA) and I didn't have any problem following along.
However, if you do like R.O.D. the TV I would recommend watching it anyway.

My interperation is the Nancy was trying to find out what kind of person she was before she lost her memory and was tracing her footsteps. That was why she was showing a picture of herself to vendor in india. She was looking for people she came in contact with and retracing her own footsteps.
Edit: I would recommand watching the OAV first as the OAV came first then the TV and the TV refer to events that happen in the OAV.
Exactly....
In 17 Yomiko shows up and the viewer will go 'Who's That?' 'Why is she here?' 'Why is Nancy so Important?'
