After viewing the pormo, I'm really looking forward to this series. There seem to be mystical creatures, highschool lesbian chicks with special fighting powers and some fanservice :D

Dang it. Now I have to download it. I will edit my post once I watch it.
*edit* I really liked the music. The powers and mystical stuff look cool. The fanservice doesn't really appeal to me, though. After all, I think that's what makes anime look bad. Then again, who doesn't like a well-drawn character?

Don't be disappointed if this is not shoujo-ai/yuri, because promos can give wrong image. But at least it looks like we don't have to be without fanservice in this spring season.
And that last scene was just beatiful. :D

I just tried this torrent and found the following (concerning the sound). I have the ffdshow codec installed only (ffdshow-20030523.exe ).

Media Player Classic (6.4.7.8)

:hmm: Why is this called "My Hime" and not "Mai Hime" ( 舞.HIME )?

"Mai" ( 舞 ) is obviously from the name of the main female character Mai ( 舞衣 )...

I mean, I can understand if they call it "My Princess" to anglicize the title :dots:

:hmm: Why is this called "My Hime" and not "Mai Hime" ( 舞.HIME )?

Maybe it has something to do with that "my" is written "mai" ( まぃ ) in kana, so that title has double meaning when they used kanji in title: Princess Mai or My princess. I don't really know, just my thoughts...

I'm skeptical. I think the music was the best part of that preview. I usually need a lot more than panties and magic tricks to like a show. Better be some sort of substance. The preview was pretty dramatic and it would be great if the show had that much energy.

i think that most of the time if there's ecchi and /or fan service(isn't it the same thing?) in a show the plot won't be great and to me the story is the most interesting thing in an anime so i won't hope for much concerning "my hime" but maybe will i have a good surprise.

Yeah, I get that it's a pun, and a pretty lame one at that.

I wouldn't have said anything if they (the Japanese studio making this anime) left it as "Mai Hime" (transliteration) or "My Princess" or "Princess Mai" (translation).

There are a few anime/manga that look like Ikkitoussen but are much better than Ikkitoussen. So don't judge an anime by its looks.

And this is a Sunrise anime... IMO they generally don't disappoint.

I gotta disagree with LinChoiSin. It seems to me that many of the better plotlines are ecchi'ed up, mainly to keep the viewers' attention while they build up to the good stuff. Both ecchi, and slapstick, which often go hand in hand. Look at Tenchi Muyo, for example. The story line is great. A guy suddenly finds out he's the grandson of the heir to a galactic empire, sort of engaged to the princess of said empire, and caught knee deep in countless schemes and conflicts. Moreover, he seems to have an ability that mortals should not be able to possess, thus drawing the attention and presence of the three penultimate beings in the megaverse. All that takes awhile, and much of the development might have been a little confusing or even boring. Rather than overwhelm the audience by spilling it all out with once or give them dull filler while they process the info, the producers filled the gaps with boob shots and Ryoko and Ayeka trying to kill each other. Thus the audience has something fun to watch while the story unfolds, and their attention is held until it does. I'm not saying that a series can't be great without that stuff, but honestly, the first episode of Crest of the Stars stunk because they squeezed in too much information without any action or entertainment. Ep1 was like a lecture.
Anyways, looks like a good anime with good plot potential. But two things come to mind. First, like mentioned earlier, why "Third Chapter"? Also, does anyone else think the main character looks a bit like an older version of Luna from Uninhabited Planet Survival?

My-Hime is the official translation which is interesting because it contradicts the japanese characters which spell out Mai Hime. That's why people often get confused with this title.

Someone here said that they thought the music is good, well, the music is done by Yuki Kajiura. :) I never expected it, though! It seems ilke such a non-Yuki-Kajiura-music-style series. Ahh, stereotypes stereotypes...

All the same, I will be looking out because it seems like it could turn into something I could fangirl over, though if it turns out to be philosophical and deep and all of that... :o (No, I will not ride an unicycle all over Japan)

I like the character designs... and there is a whole pool of seiyuu voicing these charcters, go check it out yourself. (I'm quite sure they planned for Nakahara Mai to voice the main character Mai from the character Mai-Hime... it's like Mizuki Nana playing Nana in Shichinin no Nana...)

Cool. Should be a great soundtrack then. Even if the show doesn't turn out to be very good, I'll probably watch it for the music. :)

I was gonna post here to call these guys to task for making me get the useless 3ivx codec to see those trailers, but it looks like they're already aware.

Could you re-release them with a smoother codec? DivX, Xvid, even Ogg. 3ivx runs really badly through WMP9. I realize Quicktime is not that easy to convert over, but it might be worth the trouble.

SUNRISE + 13 bishoujos + Yuki Kajiura music, that's surely a strange combination :p I won't be too concerned about Ecchiness, since it's a SUNRISE show and it has mecha after all.

It's definitely a bit on the odd side, IMHO, but that's why I like it. :) Sword, sorcery/magic/powers, and... a robot? LOL. Some fan service (read - juvenile humor) but not that bad. The series should not have any problems finding a licensing company if one isn't already in contention.

BTW, I haven't gone back to the episode yet, but is Bandai Visual actually listed as a sponsor or did I just doze off at exactly the wrong time? Hmm, Bandai putting out discs... I would put the series on my short list for import, if so...

Yes, they are there in print and the name is spoken.

EDIT: Just finished the ep.

The fanservice is pretty light. Not even worth mentioning.

What I'm concerned with is the fantasy and exagerated action. I can't stand that.

Like the sword destroying the entire floor, cutting a truck in half that's longer than the blade, then cutting the ship in half. I guess it's chocked up as magic, but it looks stupid when they have a physical sword breaking physics.

I'm not a fan of the mechanical dog thing either.

I can deal with the things I don't like. A good story can make those things irrelivant to me. So far so good, in this case.

And the music is great, as expected.

Hm, my first impressions of the first ep (raw) are... well,

I like the character designs. I think they're good, I like Minagi's character design a lot and it's pretty well-rounded. It's not exactly unique but it's not boring either.

The music is pretty good - the music during the action sequences fit pretty well, I thought. :) I need to relisten though, I had the volume on low..

The animation is okay, I was expecting more from an opening episode especialy when this anime was so hyped up by Sunrise. Oh well. Why the hell are they doing 4 major shows in one seasons... Onmyou Taisenki (important as a cash cow), this (so hyped up, can't let that down), DESTINY (Well, DUH!) and Yakitate Japan (okay, this was popular, right...)...

The magic factor is pretty good, IMO... it was pretty well done, if this was one of the first few anime I'd ever have watched I'd be hooked on straight. I'm a sucker for magic powers in school. I actually liked the mechanical dog thing because it was animated pretty cool (though I don't expect to see that much more). When Natsuki commanded it to fire I was like "is the dog called Archangel?" Ya.

The story itself, I dunno. It seems like they've already made some things really really obvious. Like who's going to be who's potential love interest and who's evil and who isn't and what not. Whatever.

What I can't stand is the fanservice, I suppose. Okay, it could have been much worse but I guess I haven't watched a show with fanservice in it for ages. I guess I'd get used to it. Though it was a bit annoying. And Tate Yuuichi (the idiot dude with the yellow hair) was annoying. I think he is supposed to be like that, though.

The voice acting was pretty good, though that little girl that clings onto Yuuichi pisses me off to no end. I thought Nakahara Mai did a pretty good job with voicing Tokiha Mai. And Seki Tomokazu did (well, IMO...) a really good job voicing Yuuichi, I felt they animated him very well in this ep and it did fit him pretty well (especially when he and Mai were talking in the ship's corridor).

This episode was mostly just an introductory sort of thing... I suppose I'll keep watching for some time...

I sense a generally fun show along the way, with elements of cool and evil here and there. Hopefully I'll be able to enjoy all of it and just sit back and let my brain rot. :) And also predict the story 5 eps ahead while acting like a knowitall.

I'm just wondering how exactly They go from trying to kill/capture each other to becoming friends, as the OP and ED sequences suggest.

This is the only Fall anime I've seen so far, I don't know of any of the other ones

Episode 1 is great. I'm pretty sure My Hime is of at least some quality.

1.) By Sunrise
2.) By very talented Voice Actors i.e. same voice actor for Maia of Daphne, there's also same person who did Sagara Souske of FMP, and also loads more.

Looks good. I enjoyed the first episode.

I saw the raw of this. Very cool beans and I'm digging the vibe I get from it. It's the same vibe I get from Dendoh as a series. The character designer for Dendoh and Mai-Hime are the same, Hisayuki Hirokazu (his personal page is http://www.dendoh.com ) but that isn't the reason why I'm getting the same vibe. Very cool action and the music isn't too bad.

What I found really funy for this show was the fact that near entire cast list for DearS had been transported here :D I hope it's also the return of Iwao Junko as a working VA after being absent for 2 years

But with this many girls/characters and top end seiyuu I really wonder if 13 episodes is ever going to do this show any justice.

What!! Where did you find out it's 13 eps long?! That's absurd! How can they end this show at 13 eps, it's screaming 26 eps to me :( There's a lot to explore... so many characters (and thus so many relationships) and backstory and all, 13 eps?!/1@

Well, now there's a sub out. Let's see how it's like...

Meanwhile I'm wondering just what this other dude Kanzaki Reito has to do with everything. He's listed as the 3rd character after Mai and Natsuki on the Character page for the official Mai-Hime site, so he can't be totally useless? BUt then again, the guys seem to be totally pushed out of this anime, going by the OP. Heh. :)
He's wearing a different uniform, though.. and he's 18... going by the OP again, I get very vague Touga vibes... :upset:

Thanks Shouta, the concept reminds me of Scryed's Alter ability.

I can't believe it though, a fansub already. I'm hesitant to download it since it's a speed sub... Are there any other groups thinking for covering this series?

I don't think Shining did a bad job at all, esp given the time.

This show looks like it will live up to my expectations. The music is great, story starts out with a good serving of both action and mystery, fan-service was never over-the-top, and I love the character designs. Looking forward to more of this....

I'm pleasantly surprised by the first episode: good action, fantasy, mecha dog :heh: a kickass sword, a bit of fanservice and good music to go along with that.
The sword cutting the ship in half was awesome :) Not a thing you see everyday :heh:
Btw : how did that sword return to the girl, did it get back on its own?

Oh and one more thing (might be nothing) but when the pick the swordgirl out of the sea she's wearing a different uniform than the one used by the girls at Fuuka Academy (they say she's from Fuuka later on), would that mean anything special or am I just nitpicking?

Watched the raw for first episode and it was very cool. It's funny how the little girl uses and sword that's way too big for her (makes for some stylish looking aciton tho) and the older girl uses really tiny pistols.

Only problem is it looks like four or more groups have decided to sub this one and that's no good.

It seems that also Static-Subs has released the first episode.

Good first episode, I don't like fantasy, but this looks very intresting. Combination of scifi, swords, magical powers, girls and school so what else you can expect than action and comedy from this.
And in that preview when Mai says somethis like "Isn't this anime supposed to be about passion of school life?" indicates that this series isn't supposed to take too seriously.

I just want more Yuki Kajiura's music.

Depending how this will be develop, I would be glad if this is 26-episode series. At least it has potential for great series.

That being said, I think the anime has potential for sure - I'm going to keep following it. The wierd mix of ecchi and action caught me off guard a bit, but on the whole I was left interested in seeing what happens next.

Mai is well-endowed. That swords cuts stuff. What the?!?Looking forward to the next episode!

Check out a mecha designer's diary who worked on Mai Hime at http://diary4.cgiboy.com/1/kenoo/

See 2004.9.12, " 【舞-HiME】15話、メカ作監 " or translated... Mai Hime 15th Episode, Mecha Supervisor

On 2004.9.30 " 【舞-HiME】次は20話のメカ作監らしい。 " or ... Mai Hime again for the 20th Episode, be the Mecha Supervisor.

It is more than 13 episodes, but it could be 24, 25, 26 or 30 episodes at the end.

Interesting to see that they have drawn up the animations up to Episode 20 before the series even aired.

Voice recording, quality control and editing takes a lot of time, I guess...

It looks ok, the art is not bad but what's to say of the 1st episode, they usually blow their load there.

I dind't quite like the yu-gi-oh action over there. Standard cut-scenes of transformations/weapon summonings etc. They get all Samurai Pizza cat on my ass there. But that's just personal i guess..

Furthermore I can't help getting a little E's Otherwise feeling but that might clear up.

WAY better then the also just released Beet the Vandal buster whom in i lost interest before you can say "birdman".

Interesting to see how non-Japanese anime fans take this anime in a similar way as us.

So, let's begin.

Many have mentioned SUNRISE doing a bishoujo series is interesting and it has been touted as "SUNRISE's first moe~type anime." Hmm, I wonder what happened to their "Seraphim Call" and "Sentimental Journey" then.

However, promo videos shown across stores at Akihabara and word of mouth was going around that this is an anime that is worth viewing for the next season. Added to a an astounding seiyuu cast, the anime seisaku staff members were also reknowned members in the anime community, which further added to the interest of otakus alike.

So, I sat down on Thursday night last week and watched the first episode of "Mai-HiME" and I have only one word to describe it:

"Moe!" (the other word for it)

Now I can only hope they can keep the sakuga-quality of this anime at this level.

Well, I think they did a good job of catching my attention and interest with episode 1. It was a little odd seeing a little girl with a huge sword which she can barely carry and a older girl wielding tiny pistols, at first. I was expecting it to be the other way around. It's not only episode 1 that caught my attention from the start but the nice cast of seiyus doing the character and OMG! it's Yuki Kaijura doing the music! I love her songs!

It's a good run for the first ep of a show. But nothing that blows me out of the water and into the world.

The animation is good, not amazing but good enough to stand on its own.
The music is also quite plesent, I don't remember the hume of the songs after I finish the show however. Usually I remember the whole melody after I hear a song (especially good ones) once.
This eps shown too little about different characters to come to a conclusion.

Overall the show could be mod into anything from a classic prince saving the prince to matrix like world bend on destruction. It is rather too open ended (not that its bad of course) for the first eps.

(Is it just me or does the school uniform resemble Stellvia of the Universe foundation uniform? :D )

Prehaps I am just getting old (thus picky).

I read through this thread, and decided to give this anime a shot. No regrets. I saw Static Sub's version, and there doesn't seem to any problems or annoyances with the video or audio. I very thoroughly the 1st episode just like everyone else. It seems like this will be quite a popular series, and thread might need a forum of its own. Anyways, I'm with TronDD with this one, I'm not too fond of the mechanical dog either (it's because I just don't like mecha, or anything mecha related). As usual, the music (as usual) are just "meh" to me because it isn't my style. And what the heck? And older girl calls someone unrelated and younger than her "Oniichan" ? Although she does act childish. Bizarre. Well, episode 02 awaits.

Shouta
2004-10-04, 00:15
Shiho's fondness of Yuuichi is fairly strong and calling him "Onii-chan" is a signal that she considers him more than just an aquaintance and a bit more than a friend (despite the fact he doesn't really acknowledge it). She probably likes him more than that, but the whole "Onii-chan" bit is probably her way of getting closer to him.

Oooh, I can't stand Shiho. Really. Actually, I'm not particularly fond of any of the characters so far, though Mai is damn cute and her yougner brother seems like a good person. This anime could easily turn into one with a cookie-cutter plot (it has a number of generic elements) but at least it's the type I like - I admit to absolutely loving Gatekeepers as it was the first super-power sorta anime I've ever watched and since then I have a closet love for that kind of genre, even if it's really stupid. X)

And I don't know how Shining-Fansubs missed out the moe-moe pun... well, it seems like they didn't put that into the preview thing...

Also, judging from the OP like I said earlier, it seems the guys don't have much part in this anime but again it seems like that Homura Nagi dude (the person who appeared shortly with the book and fell off the roof, white haired, middle class, voiced by Akira Ishida) might be more important, he appears in the OP doing something more than the other guys... which is surprising, as he's in the middle class...

I'm kind of obsessed with the uniforms. I'd like to know why Suzushiro Haruka (http://www.sunrise-inc.co.jp/my-hime/web/character/img/base_haruka.gif) wears a green vest, why Fujino Shizuru (http://www.sunrise-inc.co.jp/my-hime/web/character/img/base_shizuru.gif) wears a cream one, Kanzaki Reito (http://www.sunrise-inc.co.jp/my-hime/web/character/img/base_reito.gif) wears a totally different uniform from the other guys (see Tate Yuuichi (http://www.sunrise-inc.co.jp/my-hime/web/character/img/base_yuichi.gif)). My current guess is that they're in the school council or something. (I keep thinking Utena... gee... what if this turns out to have an Utena-style battling thing going on.... nah... o_o;;; )

And the middle school students' uniform is... vastly... modifiable... and also, look, it's a loli (http://www.sunrise-inc.co.jp/my-hime/web/character/img/base_alyssa.gif) character who really is 9 years old to... do something with! I dunno.

It also seems like the board chairman of the school, Kazahana Mashiro (http://www.sunrise-inc.co.jp/my-hime/web/character/img/base_mashiro.gif) (Kazahana can also be read as Fuuka.) is... 11 years old. And from the OP it seems that she's disabled (wheelchair-bound) and is looked after by your local maid-san (http://www.sunrise-inc.co.jp/my-hime/web/character/img/base_fumi.gif). By the way, she's called Himeno Fumi. Oo. I'm more interested in the fact that Fumi is written with kanji that means "two three". Well, to my knowledge anyway. Now all we need is for her to go around yelling "Ojou-san!!" in... fields of flowers. Never mind.

Also, the dog thing that Natsuki called out, Duran, belongs under a group of such animals, called "Child" (well, however you want to romajify チャイルド)
All juts from the official page...

^ Umm... wao, you sure you don't love Gatekeepers just because of Kageyama Reiji? :heh: :p

The first epsiode is quite nice, but I guess we need to wait some more to see how it will turn out. So far it looks like some standard superpower hotblood show, just that the main characters are girls instead of boys...

I'm not fond of the mecha dog... but yea I don't like mecha too much, except for ones with really weird designs. that mecha dog is not weird, it looks too much like... a dog for me... I guess :p I hope we can see some HiME resembling the Eternity Eight of Scryed... that got to be the coolest superpower ability IMO... although black sword with marks of eyes is equally good for me I guess...

speaking of interesting names... Homura Nagi means flame stop... hmm... seems he's a destined opponent for Mai if the names indicate anything :heh:

Regarding the music, I think it serves its purpose pretty well - it's not bad in the least bit, it's not flat, but it sounds good. It doesn't stand out yet because its the ifrst ep, but I don't think it needs to stand out, really... An overly good soundtrack may be overbearing and distracting.

This mecha wolf/dog looked really cool, very precisely designed and animated.
Girls are cute, really cute and adding some little boobs here and there is fun :) Fortunatly, the fan service does not seem to fill all the plot. Just those usual "mistakes" such as the eyes fixed on her boobs, his head on her stomach and all, but it would not be anime animore without those mendatory scenes !

Can't wait for the next ep ! Oh and this little girl's sword is great ! The animation of her swinging it is really nicely done ! Gives a real feeling of mouvement and power.

Hrm, did we watch the same show?

I didnt detect any noteworthy fanservice whatsoever. Maybe in later eps.

The gun and robot lady seemed wierd: didnt like the way all her attacks seemed ineffective. Guns, missiles, and bullets should not be show as limp all the time. They are damn dangerous. Also, she shouldnt stick a gun to someone's head unless she intends to shoot. Otherwise its stupid.

Also, I got a strong lesbian vibe from this show.

So I guess the main thing Im still interested in is the magic powers. I wonder how those will turn out. Maybe theyll throw in some worthwhile saabisu. In the meantime, I dont think it can compete with shows such as elfen lied.

Actually, I would like to ask the same question.

I've been reading most of the comments on this thread about "fanservice," but to me, there weren't any...

Perhaps what we consider as "fanservice" is different from what Americans take as "fanservice?"

NoSanninWa
2004-10-05, 00:03
Perhaps. It seems to be a matter of degree. Americans consider it fanservice whenever there is a blatant display of a woman's body, two girls lips touching, merely a glimpse of panties or pretty much anything. :)

What do Japanese people consider fanservice? I gather that girl-girl CPR doesn't quite make the grade. Mai seemed to feel that her CPR counted as a kiss, but I'd hope that all of the audience would think otherwise.

-Tofu
should be dancing princess... but since Mai is also the name of the main character, it could be said as Mai's HiME (Highly Advanced Materialization Equipment or whatever?), so it holds maybe four meanings now :eyebrow:

For fan-service... Personally I don't really think it has much that could be counted as fan-service... maybe the one scene where Mai's in wet shirt and the guy's staring part could be one? For fan-service, I'm no Japanese, but I think it's more like showing girl's panties, breasts, close up body display etc. etc. which serve no purpose other than... serving the fans... the girls doing mouth-to-mouth part seems highly integral to the plot and character development, and it's shown quite professionally, so I won't consider that fan-service...

I think the lesbian vibe is mostly in the ED, the episode itself doesn't really suggest anything lesbian I guess... I personally hope it could be some real hotblood superpower girls show... I guess I can already get enough for my shoujo-ai fix from Kannaduki no Miko :heh:

TrueKnight

I actually want the fanservice to be kind of mild in this one....because we can focuses on the story better, just like Kurao Phantom Memory. But if the fanservices are more than that....well I can't complain because I actually don't mind either :heh: . We males sucks in this area..... :uhoh:

But if the fanservices are blatantly abused just like in say.....Ikkitousen and BakuTen.......blegh.

We need more fantasies over mechs more on this one, kinda like Guilty Gear series.

About the lesbian tome....no comment, never really cared about it.....ok maybe just a bit...but only as far in the ED.

Also, I hope there's no UBER USELESS MALE WUSS in this one. Cuz I had enough in recent animes "you nearly know all them". Sadly, it seemed like this one are deemed to have one as well. :uhoh: Eventhough it's only rather small part.

BTW, is fan-service a term strictly for female characters? ie. is fan-service strictly meant for male fans? How about fan-service for female fans? (examples would be... Saint Seiya... and Gundam SEED... and lots more...)

Judging from the first ep I am going to like Mikoto's character the least out of the 3 main characters (though I like her character design), then Mai, then Natsuki... Judging purely from speculation and the OP I think the rijichou, Kazahana Mashiro will be the character personality I dislike the most, either her, or Kanzaki Reito (let's just hope he doesn't really come across as a playboy, from what I see on the site it doesn't seem so...) or maybe Harada Chie (she seems to like dispelling rumours...). Maybe Kikukawa Yukino (seems to like reading books).

Actually, the more I read the character descriptions on the site the more bland they seem :(

I too thought Mikoto's way of using the sword was rather cool, it made it a lot more dynamic and cool... and I like teh way she also gets flung with the sword easily because of its weight.

EDIT: I'm pretty sure there's fanservice for females, but it's more in the face and choice of clothes than in other parts of the body. I don't think I'd be very excited if I saw Athrun in underwear, for example. I think I'd laugh my ass off, though...
Of course, at least from my personal experience, sometimes shirtless guys can be rather exciting. :) But it makes you wonder, do all of them shave their chest like mad or do they really not grow any chest hair.. same with their beards, you gotta think they are rather particular with shaving :) (except maybe in Monster, Tenma grows stubble, gasp!)

Umm... I don't grow much (if any) chest hair myself... same goes to many people around me... beard... hmm... they are mostly, like what? 14? 16? too early to grow beard I guess... For fanservice for females... well, the earliest one to my knowledge is Saint Seiya... when Shiryu does his... umm... strip thing... of course Kenshiro does a lot of "strip" things too, but then I doubt many girls watch Fist of the North Star... I heard that many fangirls scream at Athrun bathing scene... well, I myself scream at Cagalli bathing scene, so I guess I can't blame them :heh:

I don't have much like/dislike towards Mikoto yet... she doesn't show much personality in ep1... however I really like Mai, and I somewhat dislike Natsuki... I don't have much like/dislike to Mikoto spinning her black sword neither, but I surely like it when the "eyes mark" on the sword shines... Guess currently my favorite character in Mai-HiME is the black sword, second is Mai :D

udging from the first ep I am going to like Mikoto's character the least out of the 3 main characters (though I like her character design), then Mai, then Natsuki...

Hmm... what do you mean by liking Mikoto least, then Mai, then Natsuki? you mean you don't like them all? or you mean that you like Nasuki best, then Mai, then Mikoto?

But surely not all east Asian men have no chest hair :( Or maybe the ones that do hide it....

I suppose the animators would also not have enoguh time to draw it :P

Oh wait! I remembered one absolutely hawt guy with loads of chest hair who also bared a lot of it and provided excellent fanservice! :D
Chourou!!

What I meant was I (probably) dislike them in this order, Mikoto (most), then Mai, then Natsuki (least).

I hate Natsuki's stuck up personality but I prefer it to Mai's for some reason. I guess Mai's too normal for me. o.O Of course, this is all ludicrous, me spouting all of this when it's just the first ep. :heh:

Finding an Asian with chest hair is probably as common as finding an Asian with blue eyes.

Actually, she's a 2nd year in middle school I believe (one year older than Mai's brother) and Yuuichi is a 1st year in high school, like Mai.

Ah...thanks for clearing it up. I was confused cause Yuiichi said "we're students of Fuuka Gakuen" and Shiho said "I'm in second year" I thought they were both in high school, and thought she was older. But I just realized that the school Fuuka Gakuen is an all grades school, from K-12. I never heard of schools like those before. Usually grades are split into different schools...anyways, stupid me :o .

Finding an Asian with chest hair is probably as common as finding an Asian with blue eyes.

This is kinda embarassing, but I'm fully asian and I do have chest hair. Apparently I'm a hairy guy. I already need to shave every morning. My chest not that long now (about 1 centermeter long), but they're still growing. I don't plan to shave my chest just yet :heh: . It's weird though, my dad is almost completely hairless. So I think I got the "hairiness" genes from my grampa (my mom's dad, now deceased). My grampa had quite a lot of chest hair. When I was young, I'd see him wear low cut or T-shirts, and you can see grey/white hair sticking out of the shirt out of the collars. It's sort of disgusting, but damn does he look manly, especially when he holds a beer.

Actually, I'm hoping for the fanservice to be at a mininum. That's not to say no fanservice at all. I like fanservice (when it's done tastefully). It's just that I'm kind "full" after seeing fanservice-filled shows like Girls Bravo, DearS, and Shinobu-den. I hope they elaborate more on the plot and style in this series.

Opening is done by Minami Kuribayashi :)
Music composer = Yuki Kajiura

Minami Kuribayashi + Yuki Kajiura = MUST WATCH !!! :naughty:

actually I think Yuki Kajiura has nothing to do with the OP and ED, the OP and ED are composed by Iizuka Masaaki. That's why clearly they don't have the "Yuki Kajiura feel" in them... I think Yuki Kajiura only does the music for scenes in the episodes...

Actually I think maybe it's the first time that Yuki Kajiura actually tried her best to make her music fit into the anime... this time her music blends into the flow of the anime quite well, only right when Natsuki summons the dog and the real fight begins, you can clearly hear the "Yuki Kajiura feel" in the music (holy-song-like style I guess). Still it bends into the action very well and never becomes too intrusive as to take over the scene. Great work composing music for the anime this time ;) Actually the background music has been there enhancing the atmosphere for a long time already (it starts from Natsuki approaching the door I think) but only after the fight starts and the vocal part begins that I notice it. that's a first for Yuki Kajiura music I think  Oh and the guitar music before is quite nice too. :)

should be dancing princess...

Well there is a word in japanese called 'maihime' using the exact same kanji which means 'dancing girl'. It doesn't carry the same connotation of princess as hime by itself has. But alas, I digress. We all agree that it is a play on words.

well, Yuki Kajiur's music tend to take over the show right from the first episode... Noir, .hack//SIGN, Avenger, MADLAX, Cossette, Aquarian Age... I grabbed the AKeep version and the Shining versions...not the Static, unfortunately. But between these two groups, they were both good quality, I think. As far as translating goes...I did notice that during the fight between the dark haired girl with the pistols and the young girl with the sword AKeep used "HiME" instead of "Princess" like Shining used.

My question is: what did Static use? I know the whole play on words and everything. In the context "HiME" made more sense...I think, lol.

I only saw the SS version. :heh: I'll have to see the others later on.

If you are referring to approximately 14:50, Static Subs said:

Wow.

Now this looks very promising. A cool, non-jarring Kajiura soundtrack, some fresh ideas and possibly a simple yet interesting story. Looks like a keeper as far I'm concerned. On another note, I'll wait and see if other fansub groups would be working on this before settling down on one version to follow.

I really liked the first episode.
It`s been a long time since a first episode grabbed me this much.
Plot seems okay-ish. hard to tell but iy shows some potential.
I love the characters. Mai is really cool. and very cute.
Animation was good. Just enough humor and the fanservice wasn`t overdone, which was my biggest fear. This was just enough.
so for now a big thumbs up for my hime!

However, I recently moved to a university residence and the only internet access I have from my room is through a server which denies use of p2p networks, so I can't use IRC or bt.
Does anyone know of a site that hosts this anime for direct http downloading? Thats seems to be only way I can see it without waiting even longer for it to come out on dvd. Thanks.

The promo was released just before the start of the spring anime season.

At the time I had the idea that it would at least air in the summer... and I was dead wrong.

It was worth the wait though, the only promo I ever saw was the spring one though.

I'm starting to understand how the 3 main girls will be able to get along now from watching the subs, it cleared a lot of things up.

Look like we get introduce to some new characters. Mai's breast size get test by the black-hair behind her school desk. The blond guy daydream about the encounter against Mai's breast. At the end an insectoid monster attack that re-awaken Mai's power.

It look like very interesting ep. Can't wait to get to see it when I get home.

Bleh, I was hoping for a show without big, naughty bugs who drip acid. Ah well.

Episode 2 is half silly fun running after the burning monkey, half showing off your newfound flames to the big bug.

Best part of the episode is actually what the girls are saying when informing us about episode 3.

So far not much has been explained, storyline-wise. Perhaps this ep is just to wow us with action and artwork... the ship cutting in half was pretty cool. Downside so far were the boob jokes... pretty lame, and the recycled set-up.

I'll watch some more, but I'll not be surprised if this anime doesn't have much depth or the storyline is a re-tread of a successful anime from the past.

I've also read your post on "School Rumble", I was a little surprised you never seen a fansub, but I guess it's expected cause you're fluent in Japanese already. Well having the screen filled with subtitles is a consequence of not being bilingual in English and Japanese. We (Japanese-inept) have to live with it. For us, it's either watch anime with subtitles, or take "Japanese 101" classes. And for most of us, we don't have time (or the will) to take Japanese 101 classes. Heck, I have enough trouble with English 101 at university already :heh: .

Anyways, I guess the biggest notable differences in between the fansubs of Mai-Hime is that Static Subs (which I first DLed) seems to have the most vibrant, if not better quality, colors. I can't say anything about the translations though.

The screen is too cluttered. You guys have no problem with the screen being filled with that much text? It's not so bad during the episodes, most groups try to keep it largely uncluttered during the actual episode. However, opening and ending animations are where most groups' typesetters like to strut their stuff. Their mostly over the top effects that are nothing more than eye candy. ^^:

Episode 2 continues off introducing the settings of the series. Mystery surrounds the school and it shows that even though there are a bunch of people with a common goal, their feelings about it and possibly agenda are vastly different.

Episode 3 actually will be the episode that shows the latent power of Mai woken up and utilised.

I am more curious what the Sword in the Stone is for and if it will become the weapon for Mai or some other character.

EtherNEZ

I'll reserve judgement until at least another 3 or 4 episodes have aired but I like Mai HiME so far (however, I'm easily pleased in this genre :) ).

So, would it be too much of a reach to say that the "HiME" are likely to be all materialising from this 'red star' ?

It almost seems as if the sword was controlling the girl rather than the other way round! (either that, or it's just VERY heavy :D ), it looks likely that there will be more 'moses' events in the near future - excellent.

I also wonder how many people are going to get burned by Mai in the next few episodes? You really shouldn't play with fire in school.

Haruka's expression at the end of ep1 when Mai and co made their 'explosive' entrance to Fuuka academy had me cracking up (don't ask me why, timing is everything :heh: )

Interesting...

My comments:

The screen is too cluttered. You guys have no problem with the screen being filled with that much text? Yes, it can intrude somewhat - but I think many of us are so used to explanations, translated signs and such - that it really goes 'unnoticed' for the most part. Of course, it's a catch 22 situation because if the text is completely unobtrusive it would be too hard to see which of course would be useless...

The stylists indeed love to go all out in the OP and ED, but I have no problem with that - It's good to see creativity! Nothing wrong with eye candy as long as you're not trying to hide deficiencies in other areas behind it... :) although I know it can be overdone regardless.

Okay, I saw the first episode last night... And what the hell is this supposed to be?

A drama shoujo fanservice comedy with swordfighting magic mechs?! Not to mention that the 2nd episode appears to add 'school' to the mix.

No matter how hard someone tries, there's only so many genres you can mash together before it looks like they're trying too hard to appeal to everyone. This anime, although not bad, it just kinda reeks of crossmarketing.
I have to watch this one for a few episodes to see if I truly like it or not. It's got the potential to clean itself up and be cool, but so far, it looks like it's just trying too hard.

I did think the way the girl fought with her sword, was quite badass (although a little over-the-top on destructive power)

Actually, the screen is only filled with text during the OP and ED, that's when the karaoke experts really get their thing going :) After that there is usually no more than 1 line of text (sometimes two lines).

Actually, our national TV has shows subtitled about 80% of the time. We are kinda used to quickly reading the subs and watching the image, actually if I see a movie in dutch (my native language) with english subtitles I will feel compelled to read the subs even though I allready know what's being said. In fact around here people feel ankward when shows aren't subtitled.

Well as someone pointed out, we have no choice. It did took me a while to get used to the subtitle compare to watching the show clean. However, the cluttering only happens in the intro and ed where all the credits and songs and god-knows-what-else are pack together.

If it carries on doing a Soukyuu no Fafner i wont keep watching it. Ending right at a crucial point gets annoying after a while, Fafner always seemed to end an episode right at a climax which after 10 episodes drove me away.

I understand the reasons behind it, being if they end on a high you have to watch the next episode to see what happens, however its a cheap tool used for lame shows that arent enjoyable enough to keep people watching. HiME doesnt need to use this style of naf promoting.

The show seems to be good enough to keep the fans interested without cheating. I dont mind it now and again, but if its every show i'll stop watching untill the season is over and then download them all.

I found the the second episode to be quite boring. There was nothing really funny going around and it's just an episode to introduce the other characters in the anime. I guess I was expecting more action in episode two because the first episode was awsome. I also have to agree that Mai looks like Luna the similarity is uncanny. All she needs now is a Chako look alike. :)

Welcome to Japanese marketing tactics 101.

That type of ending is what we call a "cliffhanger". It is very popular here as well.

I think he should watch a popular show from the USA called "24" which stars Kiefer Sutherland and airs on FOX. I think this show is known of in Japan. It is the modern king of cliffhangers. If you watch it as it airs be prepared to say "oh boy...have to tune in next week".

Cliffhanger definition
---
A cliffhanger or cliffhanger ending is a plot device in which a movie or novel contains an abupt ending. Although a cliffhanger can be enjoyable as a page turner at the end of a chapter in a novel, a cliffhanger at the final end of a work can be frustrating. Cliffhangers can build anticipation for (and profits of) sequels. However, if no sequel follows, effective suspension of disbelief can leave the audience or readership wondering what happened in the work's fictional realm. Cliffhangers were especially popular in 1930s serials when movie theaters filled the cultural niche now primarily occupied by television.

Hmm, Mikoto's Character CD single came out few days ago. [Maybe they all did] But anyways, Got it, and well, nice songs aside from the pictures with the cd. As for the series, I guess I'll have to watch ep 03 to see if there is anything worth spending time on it. I mean, I don't mind downloading it, or HD space, just the time....[I'm noted for one who is able to download all of this Fall's new series, but can't have enough time to watch :heh: ]

There are three character CDs out now that I was able to find on the shelves - one each for Mai, Natsuki, and Mikoto.

Third episode was fairly good. A good fight in the start with Mai demonstrating her powers with some progression of the plotline (I think - will have to go back and try to better understand it later) in the second half. Given that it's a 13-episodes series, about time too! :) A rather unneeded bath scene at the end with Mai and Mikoto.

Minds out of the gutters please. Think the editors of "Mai HiME" worked on "Girls Bravo" or something... :) :joke:

because the white fog is back.

Flight (or at least the ability to hover, and she's going to need to get a bodysuit like Natsuki's if she's going to do this a lot), shield, which was seen in the first episode, whip generated from a stream of fire, and command(?) of that "dragon" in the OP, which can breathe out fire. D'oh. :)

No idea if that sword Mai pulled out will actually mean something, though.

Special effects aren't bad, I thought. For those who watch this series, they'll probably continue. For those who don't, probably won't.

I'm not sure if I'll continue, and I'm sure others who have not yet seen MH will not begin. I mean, I hope there is at least a meaning or a good story for this series. But I'll continue to watch it; hopefully I won't think of it as a waste of time.

I'm not sure if that's a (huge-ass) whip or just a barely-controlled stream of fire.

I'm wondering about the dragon-thing. It's got this big sword stuck in its jaw. Is that supposed to be part of the design or something?

Mai has the bracelet things, Natsuki has the pistols, and Mikoto has the sword. Since Mai and Natsuki seem to have their own mecha-types as well (dragon-thing for Mai and dog-thing for Natsuki), I wonder what Mikoto's mecha would look like.

Just watched Ep 2, not too bad...the action and the comedy combo is quite interesting even if the jokes are a bit lame sometimes.

Just to clear it up Mikoto character is kind of a Cat! Ah she was so cute when she was eating. Although I have to say I have soft spot for moterbike riders. :D

Episode 3 sat well with me. I had doubts about parts of the show but this ep worked out really well. I wasn't put off by the fighting or Mai's dragon (Kagutsuchi).

Mikoto's grown on me, too.

I'm soooo glad they didnt pull a Fafner with this. I really loved episode 3. Mai is one hot babe (couldnt resist sorry :P)

Her mecha is hyge compared with Duran, though we've yet to see Mikoto's mecha. Any one else see another love triangle brewing here, Mai + Mikoto + one of the guys hehe. I'm wondering where her brother is going to fit in though, or if he's just going to be used as a 'source' for Mai doing what she does, to fullfill the promise her dying mum asked.

Would be nice if he became more of a central character, rather that someone who always needs saving, hell i'd settle for him ending up with one of the HiME, or the Director, both of them have weak bodies so they're perfect for each other hehe

The director was cute mind, i like her.

Definatly on my to watch list, though it's a way to go before it over throws Bleach, but it has bumped Beet down a few spaces :)

When Mai pulled the sword from the rock and then Kagutsuchi appeared with a sword through it's upper and lower jaw...I kinda did a double take and thought "Didn't she just pull the sword out to unseal him? If that's a different sword, is it supposed to represent a second seal?". In any case there seems to be a practical limit on how useful Kagutsuchi would be in battle, not because he's too weak...but because he's far too powerful. It would be like needing a rifle and someone handing you a rocket launcher. Would work in a pinch, but it's going to take a bite out of the landscape and any allies that happen to be in the vicinity when used.

I like the show so far but I really don't care about Mai's over protectiveness with her little brother thing. Seems more like he's a "damsel" in distress.

why does she seem so intent on keeping everyone who's a HIME minus the ones already there out of the school? Or should I be asking how come she didn't want Mai to unseal her guardian? Did she know that it would be too powerful for something so minor even though they were having a hard time?

When Nagi said that Mai would have to put the thing she values most on the line, she assumes that he means her life.

However, while I was watching, I thought that he meant Takumi.

After all, it seems quite obvious that she's doing all this to protect Takumi. Since she values her brother over everything else, I wonder what plot points this would reveal.

This could also be a clue as to why Natsuki didn't want Mai to unseal the dragon-thing...

Hmm... that is a good point since we still have no backstory on Natsuki. She could be acting that way because of something that happened to her in the past.

I think it was in the first episode where we see her and her bro in the hospital watching as their mum dies. It flashes back to their again in the third episode this time we hear what mum says. She asks Mai to look after her brother. When Mai is fighting she uses the words 'i made a promise'.

All of this to me says that her brother is the most important thing to her, though she naturally assumes it means her life. After rewatching this episode again i cant hel pbut feel that her bro is going to be the standard weakling who always needs saving. I hope im wrong, but we'll see

I have to say my thoughts, and maybe some of you might agree.
From Ep 3 :

1) Kagutsuchi looks like Leviathan from Final Fantasy 8, this time its a Fire type :heh: This is based on the sound it/he/she makes, which is a sound made by whales i think.. and definitely the body is streamlined.

2) *People might disagree on this* Mikoto  is a most likely cat reincarnate. She hates baths, and move like a cat(Episode 2).

I just watched episode 1-3 of My HiME and I think I like it!

It didn't blow me away at first, because I was slightly distracted by the fanservice xÞ The animation during the fight scenes was amazing though! Mikoto is just the cutest thing in the world when she's not fighting *pets her lovingly* Also, the voice talent is very impressive! I checked out all the seiyuu and I was a little shocked with all the people I admire being in this!

I have a feeling the plot will be getting slightly darker in the near future.. which is always a good thing. All I hope is that the show keeps the elements it has at the moment... but maybe a little less fanservice? Even though it looks like some hentai crept into the episode four º__º Oh, and one last thing:

Did anyone else think that Kagutsuchi was like a last level summon from Final Fantasy? Talk about overkill! That ugly ass creature didn't really deserve that much of an attack :heh:

I don't really understand all the talk about fanservice (AniDB even includes "ecchi" in the genre list). Let's go through the episodes so far:
Ep 1: closeup of Mai's fully covered breasts for comedy purposes.
Ep 2: Haruka's (again, fully covered) breasts bounce once.
Ep 3: an extremely tame bath scene. Mai doesn't even go naked and get redressed in a skin-tight B&D suit when she gets her Elements.
From the preview, it seems that episode 4 might actually feature girls in swimsuits (OMG ECCHI). Don't get me wrong, I usually dislike shows featuring ditzy women running around in skimpy clothing for no real purpose. I just can't see what all the fuzz here is about.

???

:) Didn't think that I needed a " :joke: " tag there - with the "or something" and the " :) " one already - but okay. Will go back and edit that post afterwards.

Seen episode 4; have to love the way "flying halfway around the world" does to someone's sleep schedule. :p

I gave "Mai HiME" either a 8 or a 8.5, I think, earlier... somewhere. Whatever the score was, drop it down by 2 for me. I have no idea what direction this series is going, especially with it now being more that 25% over, and would guess that it's faithful to the manga because this episode, IMHO, was just silly.

OTOH, getting a look at the "monster" of this episode reminded me of "Gremlins"... Not really a good memory. Mai looks cute in her waitress outfit, their dorm building being turned into a... trap... of sorts, Shiho's behavior toward her "brother" is getting a bit old but is still funny, but for the most part, it's a Natsuki episode. Don't know yet if I'll continue to watch - or buy the DVDs when they come out, however. Still seems to be nothing more than the usual school kids series with mysterious powers and such.

Big whoop, IMHO.

Poor Mikoto got her bust felt up and Mai got blamed instead for not teaching Mikoto on female apparel. Check out Mikoto's reaction as well on being blackmailed into helping on the pretext of cutting off her lunch supply :heh: Yep, Mikoto is very likely based on the catgirl design, especially with her sleeping so comfortably around with kitties.

We also learn Natsuki has an admirer in poor 'innocent' Takeda and that she has a hobby of lingerie collecting.

On the overall plot, Nagi with his finger counting indicates that there will be at least 3 more HiMEs to awaken in the future episodes.

It also seems that Nagi has some involvement in the letting loose of the Orphans.

I haven't seen episode 4 yet (downloading raw now), but I do have a quick question:

Does the episode end in another cliffhanger like the one at the end of episode 2? It'll be a bit of a pain if they decide to do action scenes in double-episode packs.

EDIT: Never mind, I've watched it.

Best episode ever.

There's some discussion about the amount of episodes on pages 4 and 5 of this thread. Someone mentioned reading the series' official page and seeing "Episode 15" and "episode 20" mentioned there. There was some other evidence for more than 13 eps there, too. AnimeNFO and AniDB have the episode count at 13, but they've been wrong before (and they may very well have the same source). The "How many episodes" thread still has Mai Hime as unknown.

Spoiler tags for asking a question? :)

No, #4's not a cliffhanger episode.

Seeing as how this show was marketed to males to begin with... I don't think that's going to be an issue in JP. Now in American where a good amount of female anime fans liked Love Hina (which seems weird as far as I'm concered)....one can only wonder.

Anyone else find it interesting how there has been a lack of service/moe. Hell they even made a joke about it in the preview for ep2. I guess Sunrise will do a bishoujo show but they aren't going to go overboard with it. Nonetheless it has been enjoyable so far. I'm not a big fan of Mikoto's chara design at all. I do like Mai and Natsuki a lot though. Megami vol 54 had a nice pullout of Mai.

Checked out the first 3 episodes of Mai HiME today (been trying out alot of new series for that matter) and like it so far. I renamed the eps to Mai HiME, the translated english title "My HiME" just doesn't sound right to me. :p I hope this will indeed be 26 eps unlike the 13 that is claimed by some sources.

Quick rundown of my impressions on some of the characters so far:

Mai: confident and slightly mischievous (at least towards that guy she first met on the ferry) girl, very protective of her brother and seems like a natural as a HiME, she surprised both the other involved people and herself
Takumi: the 'weak' brother, although I don't think the weakness is for lack of character but only due to his affliction (anyone have an idea what this affliction is yet?)
Mikoto: weird girl with catlike habits, has some unusual origin, and is looking for her brother who might be somewhere on campus. Quite affectionate towards Mai (and usually cute in that disposition) Wonder if he will have the same strange habits...
Natsuki: bit of a psycho, and might have killed Mikoto or gotten Mai killed (not to mention the people on that ferry) which seems odd when she basically warned them they would die if they came to the school. Perhaps she doesn't want any competition?

eh? how does Natsuki give you the impression that she might have killed Mikoto or gotten Mai killed? As far as I can tell, this story is being told chronologically and that everyone only has one life to live. Do you mean she wants to kill Mikoto or Mai?

Just when I thought I had no mood to watch episode 2 (yes, I forced myself to click the file..) I ended up breezing through it and then episode 3, and now I'm excited for episode 4! Well from the looks of it, episode 4 is loaded with fanservice, but that's to be expected with such a colorful cast of female characters.

I think what Trax means is that Natsuki almost got Mikoto and Mai killed on that ship, ie. she is fully intent on killing them to prevent them from coming to the school.

Possibly, but it was Mikoto that sliced the Ferry in two and nearly got them killed ;p

(I may not have used the perfect wording above, so it was a bit unclear what I meant)

Well Mikoto was to blame aswell for being reckless, but Natsuki actually started it and turned the ferry into a battlefield which really wasn't necessary. And if Mai hadn't been able to block off some of Natsuki's attacks with her first showing of HiME powers both she and Mikoto may have been killed already. It didn't look like she was holding back at all, it was just fortunate she finally decided to leave them alone after another warning. So Natsuki is still a psycho in my book, and I'm not really sure why. But I'm sure we'll found out. :P

Of course after all this Natsuki stuff no one asked the better question.

How in the heck did Mikoto FLOAT in the water carrying the HEAVY sword? :)
