Just finished watching the first part of 2-part Gundam SEED Special Edition aired on TV (Tokyo) today in widescreen format. The second part will be aired tomorrow. Each part is 55 minutes in length.
The opening scene was Kira and Athrun in their childhood meeting in a garden. The final scene of the first part was Kira returning Lacus to Athrun in their Strike-Aegis space meeting.
Pink-chan RuleZ again.

How were the "new cuts"? Anything worthy of mention?

Hi brightman and xellos.
Only new thing was widescreen. There was no new scene so far. Should call it "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Special Cram Edition for Beginners." Heliopolis collapsed in 25 minutes which was still very slow. Will see how the final scene looks.
4 days to SEED DVD 13 release, 5-minute OVA inclusive.

You can say that again :heh: According to previews the second part will take us to the end of the Andy fight... Sounds nuts.
Anyway, can't wait to see the 5 minute OVA thing. Hopefully it won't be too disappointing.
Damnit I don't want a 5 minute OVA, I want Gundam Seed 2!!!!!!!! I'll give my first-born child for it

lol why would they make a "special" OVA that doesnt even tell the whole story?

Grrr. They're airing the shows in the middle of the morning! And me without a VCR/TiVo handy.
Is school out already, though? I still saw students while walking to the office this morning.

Yeah, these two parts only make up "Special Edition Part 1"... So you can bet that there will be more...
I wonder why they didn't just make these theatrical movies though? They sound like they are essentially the same thing as the other Gundam compilation movies, except each "movie" is further divided into two...

There are no indication that these will be released here... But who knows...
Once again., Bandai US own everything Gundam, and in relevance to this topic, own everything Gundam Seed. This Means all video (which includes OAV's, Specials, movies, TV series), Audio (soundtrack, Voices), Toys and other merchandise, artwork, and etc.

Why not get those computers with HD-recording capabilities instead? It's that or a new HD-DVD recorder for my summer bonus.
It should be graduation/end of school year week by now.

:topicoff: No room really - and I'm going for the minimalist look at my new apartment (easier to clean, for one) - and the desktop that I had built with HD-recording is still on a ship somewhere in the Pacific. I'm also not really sure if it'll work properly here in Japan...
Good to know re graduation schedule. Maybe I won't be run over by kids riding on bicycles this school year after all! :)
:topicon: (heh...)
I wonder, however, if there's nothing new about the two specials, will they be listed on AS? Leaving aside the whole licensing argument, what would be the point? The 5-minute OVA would be interesting to see, but it might just be included on a R1-release disc at some point.
Up to the mods, I would say, to decide... and more power to them.

You were right. Thanks for correcting. I told myself while watching I did not quite sure remember seeing the scene Fllay hugging Kira with expressive joy the first time she met Kira inside Arch Angel (if you are a fan of Fllay, that scene was worth watching, 4 and a half stars) then moved on to SSigh (her distant feelings toward Ssigh was well observed comparing to the former scene with Kira). For the others new scenes I was out of concentration for the last 20 minutes.
I for one do not feel this edition is a good basis for SEED movie (if there will be one but it is most likely according to the works done on this edition). I guess next edition should be aired at the beginning of summer (another 3 months), then fall and winter. Spring was mentioned for this edition. How is about the idea of 4-season Gundam SEED edition to kill the year 2004 then the movie in 2005?

A Fukuda interview concerning this movie was posted over at http://aeug.blogspot.com/
Miri: Besides the normal TV footage, I heard there are new parts...?
Fukuda: There are. We have the equivalent of one episode's worth of new footage.
Miri: That many! Does this mean there are never before seen/heard scenes or lines?
Fukuda: Of course (laughs). If it didn't, what's the point of the new footage?
Miri: Right.
Fukuda: New parts like never before seen footage, re-editing a certain shot with new backgrounds and effects or tweaking the screen results. In other words, there are 2 types of new footage.
Miri: After you say that, I want to ask "Where is the new footage at?"
Fukuda: Hmm. Where do you see the first new scene, line, and what parts were edited?... For that you have to watch it.
Miri: Heh, had a feeling you would say that...
Fukuda: There are some subtle changes so I would like the viewers to carefully check. Hmm, to strongly suggest, characters that didn't appear in the series.
Miri: What?! Who is that?
Fukuda: Like a ZAFT soldier that was with Athrun... The rest is secret. (We at Gunota think Fukuda is talking about Rusty)
Miri: Yay. People that weren't seen are appearing as new characters. Who could that be...!?
A whole new episode of new footage :twitch: Sounds like you missed quite a bit Haro :heh: (though I guess these are spread out through the whole thing)

The second part just ended.
SEX! SEX! SEX! More sex scenes.
Kira-Fllay relationship was extensively elaborated. In addition to the famous sex scene, more love-making flashes were added to answer any doubts whether they actually did it including a probably climax flash.
The new cut on the first desert fight was good and aroused into excitement by a new insert song from T.M. Revolution, probably from the new album. There may be new fight scenes which I was not certain to distinguish.
Naked scene of Cagalli taking a shower was probably new too. There were more scenes on Martin, I think.
The commercial spot on SEED MSV was so good. I am not sure whether it is from that lottery SEED MSV DVD.
Edit:
Just read that interview brightman. So that new insert song should be "Zips." It aroused me to a higher degree than "Meteor" with fight scenes. Two thumbs up for that fight sequence.
At this moment I did not perceive anything special with "ZAFT soldier that was with Athrun." Have to rewatch. The person worth being added the new scenes or flashbacks subsequently should be Miguel.

Well, I have rewatched the first part and compared with the original series.
"ZAFT soldier that was with Athrun" should refer the whole new 55-second sequence of the preparation of Heliopolis infiltration of Athrun and his elite friends. Miguel went to his GINN and the rest broaded a dropship. The face of Rusty and his orange hair (hence his name, maybe) were seen for the first time while conversing with Athrun and Yzak inside the dropship and Miguel inside GINN's cockpit.
The scenes on Kira and friends in the lab before the bombs went off and the debut of Cagalli were redone and told differently from the series with new footage.
Newtype effect was added when Mwu first sensed Klueze off his sight.
The scenes when Fllay emerged from the life pod and then hugged Kira from episode 4 were redone and retold. Apparently Kira had his cheeks turn red when being hugged. A new 30-second sequence of interaction between Fllay and Ssigh was introduced starting from Fllay leaving Kira after being called by Ssigh.
The long conversation between Athrun and Klueze about the pilot of Strike Gundam was cut into 10-second flashback and was inserted into the scene when Athrun lying and thinking about the loss of Rusty and Miguel (episode 4).
The scene Athrun taking a shower (episode 8) was lengthened and inserted with memory clips of his parents. The face of his mother was presented for the first time. This sequence and the subsequent squence that he learned about the missing of Lacus were almost totally remade (his room and his desk including an under-construction blue Haro were redrawn) and were relocated to be ahead of hatch opening sequence of Lacus's life pod (episode 7).
New 25-second fun scene of Lacus leaving her room to the cafeteria was added.
New 8-second scene of Kuzzy and Murrue in the bridge were added before Vesalius scene (episode 8).
New 10-second meeting scene among Klueze, Athrun, and soldiers and launch scene of a GINN were added before the launch of Aegis (episode 9).
Athrun's clips were inserted to the scene Kira and Lacus were talking about him beside Arch Angel's windows.
That should be likely complete or almost..., for part 1.

If you can get part 1 then part 2 should be available tomorrow. I do not have much time to do comparison. I want it in digital format too. Will have to use my wife PC with Japanese OS to do the search with that "Winny." :eyebrow:
brightman

Yup, I guess so... You don't need a Japanese OS to use Winny though... You just need Windows XP with Japanese installed, and then switch the regional setting to Japanese.
Anyway, I just saw it... I can understand why it's not a movie now... It just doesn't have the whole "epic" feel of a movie, everything's just stuffed together.
But anyway, I guess the new scenes should be good enough a reason to watch this...
Some more notes:
1) Athrun talks with Kira inside Heliopolis, and then he went back to PLANT so the next time they meet in this is when Fllay's father dies and Lacus was captured
2) Kira and Cagalli had more interaction in the beginning...
3) Spent a bit of time doing the "bounce" :heh:

Yeah, I am using W2K which can do too but I don't want to switch my locale to Japanese 'cause it has some impacts on the my database interaction.
The movie must have different ways to tell the story. Anyway they have the footage twice the series.... Bringing up the plamo sales a bit then Barry the chopper will do. :D

Hi Kaka, comrade. No spoiler this time. I just finished listing new scenes/changes of Part 1 above.
The drama tracks from 5 suit CDs were made into manga format and printed in 4 issues of Gundam Ace magazine. Here they are.
Suit CD 1&2 - 2004-01 issue,
Suit CD 3 - 2004-02 issue,
Suit CD 4 - 2004-03 issue, and
Suit CD 5 - 2004-04 issue
Now I can feel that Athrun-Lacus fun conversation better. OKAPII !!!! :naughty:
I'm surprised no one here has mentioned that the seiyuu for Aisha was changed from the horrible voice acting of Vivian Hsu to...... super-veteran seiyuu Hirano Fumi
Long live Lum-chan!
I love GundamSeed and this Special Edition. So far, Episode 2 contains a lot of new scenes.
On the other hand many scenes which are well known in the tv series were converted into a lot better. As example, the ending of episode 2.
After the deathmatch.
Kira (on the battlefield): "I ...."
Frey (on the ship) "Kira... fight, fight, fight until you die... otherwise i`cant forgive you!"
Kira (on the battlefield): ".... don`t want to kill anyone!"
These contrasts are brilliant.
That sounds pretty good, I finished watching the series few days ago, thought it was great, except for Episode 26. Anyhow, how would I be able to obtain the Special Edition DVD? I live in the states and don't understand Japanese. I hope they made the ending longer in Part 2, I want to see what happens after the sieze fire.

I'd say that making the Seed special edition pretty much makes a second season of Gundam Seed almost a certainty. Otherwise why go through the trouble of making a compilation of the series, a five minute OVA taking place after the events of episode 50 which apparently shows Yzak as one of the new leaders of Z.A.F.T and a possible alternate ending to the show as well. If you ask me, I'd say that makes SEED 2 a done deal. All we gotta do now is wait and see.
As for the special itself, I'd say if your a hardcore fan of Gundam SEED, you should probably get a hold of it, otherwise don't waste your time. The new song in part two is cool, and in most instances, the voices were re-done for the main characters as well as seiyuu replacements for Nichol and Aisha. Personally I didn't like the special all that much, but then again, I really didn't like the first half of Gundam SEED anyways. So hopefully the next two parts that cover the second half of SEED will be better. Maybe they'll explain how Fllay and Kruze are connected, if Milly & Diakka hook up or give us a little backround of those 3 psycho Gundam pilots of the Alliance. :hmm:

They did it for $$$$$$$$$ (or ¥¥¥¥¥¥¥ )
As Fukuda indicated, he just thought it'd be cool to have a compilation of the series. And the new ending is just a tag on to increase DVD 13 sales. I don't see how either of these might be proof of a Seed sequel.
They made a Turn A compilation movie too... But that really didn't mean anything for a Turn A sequel.

Just watched the 5 min OVA. It wasn't anything totally special (after all, it was only 5 minutes long exactly with an additional 16 seconds of credits), but it was rather interesting to see what happened to the main characters of the series that were still alive. It was mainly a reflection of the peace talks and to show what each of main characters are doing now, but there is more focus on the 4 SEED users, Kira and Lacus (who are together) and Athrun and Cagalli (who are also together).
oops, didn't see Haro's other posting of this.

Here's an update on the status of Gundam Seed Special Edition TV courtesy of www.animenewsnetwork.com It would seem that they're gonna do them seasonally, but there will probably be 6 or 8 tv compilation episodes of 48 minutes each released 2 at a time probably each season as HaRoRuleZ mentioned. Anyways, as brightman has pointed out, these may be Bandai's way of bringing closure to the series by doing the compilation as they did with Gundam Turn A, since these in no way are meant to indicate a sequel, and it would be highly unlikely for them to also create compilation movies, since 3 compilation movies of 90 minutes each would be the same running time as 6 compilation tv episodes of 48 minutes and thus the movies would essentially be the tv compilation episodes, which are being released in widescreen which is further proof of their being a tv substitute for movies.

第三章 大いなる勇士の鼓動

Note that there is no romance scene between Kira and Lacus like Athrun and Cagalli in shot #08 & 09. I like shot #07 which is the first time to see them, main ZAFT pilots, together in one shot.
Enjoy!
O_o Wow! Thanks for those shots, it looks awesome. I am a little surprised that there is no sign of lovey-doveyness between Kira and Lacus though. But Asuran and Cagalli looked like they were pretty serious about each other :naughty:
