Here goes the continuation of my previous message.
Spoiler for Drama on Nonoka part:
I just replayed her L story because I admit since Nonoka is my least favorite girl I never replayed her route thus my memory of her route is too fuzzy
From my replay, the drama on her L is just like I wrote before, the 'triangle' and Nonoka's complicated feeling of Kazuya and Haruka is taken on more serious approach. You see, even when Nonoka agrees that she will becomes Kazuya model, but since she doesn't get what model supposed to pose (even in gravure pose), both of them agree to do Nonoka's rise ball practice first. They did two sessions and Nonoka is almost perfect the throw, and then she asks Rina to teach her how to bake cookies for Kazuya as a thanks to accompany her, but when she is about to give it to him, she sees Kazuya is talking with Nonoka and then she ran away. When Kazuya is trying to find her on the class, he talks to Rina asking if he finds her cookies tasty (Rina and Nonoka is in same class), Kazuya lies and says it's good. And when he finally finds Nonoka and asks about the cookie, Nonoka lies that the cookies are made for her clubmates not for Kazuya. And then on the next event Kazuya finds out that Nonoka is skipping her club practice and when he finds her, Nonoka is sad (almost crying) because her special rise ball practice with Kazuya is almost done because she almost master the throw, and she doesn't want that because it means they can't do something together again. Kazuya says that it's not the case since they are friends and can always back to what they usually did, and beside her promise to be his model hasn't been fulfilled yet, cheering Nonoka again. But, the drama comes back again (IIRC after their date and photo session) when Nonoka, yet again, sees Kazuya talking to Haruka and seems want to go home together. It makes Nonoka depressed that in the end Haruka is still the girl Kazuya likes.
While on the story H, the reason why Nonoka is challenging Kazuya on the duel is because Nonoka sees Haruka's knitting Kazuya's loosen button of his shirt, which makes Nonoka doesn't want to lose and resolve to become more girly to win his heart. So even though the basic premise is mostly the same with Nonoka's feeling, but on story H she isn't depressed at all, but on her own (reckless and funny) way fights back head-on.
Oh yeah, outside Haruka route, the Photography Club hardly play any major role on other part of heroine, well maybe the exception is on Mai route where they lend Kazuya their erotic magazine, but after that they didn't do anything important. I think it's the anime who takes the liberty to make the other Photography Club members to get more appearance for the comedy scene, but originally they mostly only appear on the school festival, and that's only just to have conversation with Kazuya telling him to take break so he can go see the rest of festival.
And I'm sorry to inform that my PSP is broken the half-way I'm replaying Nonoka story, it can't read the disc or even the ISO file T_T So I can't currently replay Photo Kano anymore to give more comparison or insight of what the anime cut. But if you have more questions I'm more than happy to try to answer based on my memory. Aah, now I'm more jealous of my friends who own PSVita and have been playing the Photo Kano Kiss >.<
Yeah, I don't know why decide to do what they're doing, making Kazuya looks bad on the 4 first episodes, mostly because the blackmail thing. Even the seiyuus are joking about it I'm not sure of the marketing, I think it's because the new Photo Kano has DLC (download content) now so they can gain more from it, and to boost the sale of Blu-Ray and DVD they include special bonus DLC so now both the anime and game sales can increase even though the anime is half-hearted. While back then on Amagami since it didn't have any DLC, so they went all out to make the anime interesting showing all the charm of the girls and their interaction with the MC to make even non-player interested on the anime.
After replaying the game a little bit more, I noticed that every story L (for the main 6 heroines, since the 3 hidden heroines only have 1 story regardless the club player chose) has drama point, where most of the time the girl feels depressed for some time until player get to next part of the story, while on the story H the drama is there but due to it resolved instantly on the same event you can hardly get the depressed feeling.
Spoiler for The drama moment for Haruka, Aki, Sanehara:
It's when the girls gossiping about Haruka and Kazuya, followed by the confession of the soccer ace and Kazuya's word that hurt Haruka. There's this time on the gameplay where things get awkward between them, even one of Haruka's after-school date event on this point is they go home together but went nowhere else because Haruka wants to go home. It resolved later when Kazuya was told by Kanon that Haruka have been skipping her tennis practices. On the story H, originally the gossip scene is there too, but no confession from the soccer ace so only Kazuya feels awkward around Haruka, and it resolved quickly on next main event where Haruka 'pushes' Kazuya to take her picture, because she feels when Kazuya look at her from his camera's finder, it brings the feeling from their childhood where Kazuya always looks after her.
The anime adapted the event of her story H where she is depressed with her burden but Kazuya immediately cheer her up by taking her to skip school. Now on her story L, Kazuya couldn't do anything at that time, only cheering her by word and that doesn't do anything good at that time. Aki keeps feeling lost and sad for some moment until on the next (or maybe two) event Kazuya says he wants Aki to be like her usual self, he wants to see her smiling and excited like when she is diving and then asks her why she loves diving. The rest of the story is like we know from the anime, it's because the dolphin show and Kazuya asks her to go there and it brings Aki back cheerful again. The anime omit the date event on story H where they go swimming on public pool instead.
For Sanehara, it doesn't have any depressing drama event like two above, but on story L she tells Kazuya the reason why she hates people's smile like on the anime (again. the anime mashed up portion of story L and H) and the ambiance does feels serious. While on story H, Kazuya keeps taking interesting picture of Sanehara just because it's funny, not because she wants to make Sanehara smile or take picture of people though he is happy for her when she says she is interested on taking picture of people, although limited at herself and Kazuya at the beginning.
I won't talk about the rest of heroine route because I'm afraid it will ruin your fun when watching the anime, but since you brought up Nonoka, I'll post it on my next VM since the board limits the character to 5000 long
It's fine but tell me if I'm bothering you. That's all I'm asking. Anyway...
I'm aware that most dating sim/game adaption will possibly get rushed with things left out. It's sort of weird that they'd make a decision based off the fact that they're 6 main and 2-3 sub heroines to work with within a 1 cour air spot. I mean Amagami got 2 cour during its release, why not Photo Kano? It could either be series popularity or just a means to promote a product to increase the fandom a lot more. With 12 episodes and over 6 heroines it's sort of hard to add more "depth" to the imagery and have to skip things that could be an necessity to the character and romantic development, in some aspects. Haruka had that, but the others will too I'm afraid due to it being 12 episodes and all.
Most mediums adapted from manga, games, and novels seem to have a good depth of coverage. Some end or gets covered better than others, but sometimes no. PK is sort of split down the middle in that regard.
I sort of noticed that both routes (L(ove) and H(appy)) have good equal amount of romantic depth, but I still think that character development added with comedy like you said sort comes first before the romance aspect develops. I see that L and H routes have their difference, but it still doesn't change the fact that the premise and the approach changes slightly.
Spoiler for Nonoka Arc - Reply:
I understood that Nonoka had feelings for the MC depending on the arc, but the approach and development were somewhat different. I feel like in each route with her the approach in the romance were different.
L Route - Uses modeling as an excuse to get even more close to him
H Route - Ultimatum of love was declared and willingness to proof herself to him and her rival in love.
I understand what you're saying, but I feel like an arc does display more character development and depth so that romance feels more natural. It's only natural for the H route to have comedy due to the nature of the club that the MC joins in contrast to the latter that focuses on more "tame" ideals. Each heroine have way of developing and the respective routes really come into play depending on the personality, situation, and interactions with the mc. I understand what you're saying, but I'm still trying to understand the series a little more. I love the series but some thought can be put into interpreting how things flow, from my standpoint of course.
No need to apologize, if any I'm the one who should apologize to take time replying your message ^^
Lately I'm sucker for romance manga/anime too, that's actually the reason I tried to play Photo Kano game in the first place. I've never been played love sim game other than Love Plus (Oreimo, Haganai, and PapaKiki are visual novel, from my POV it's different than love sim genre). And for anime adapted from love simulation game like this, for me personally omnibus format is the best so every heroine can have their time to shine and show the viewer their own charm. At this point for PK anime we should be prepared that the rest of episode will as rushed. I wonder if it would be better if it still 1 cour (12 eps) but they went omnibus from the get-go so the 6 default six main heroines each have 2 episodes, while Tomoe episode could be an OVA. Sure Haruka will get less screen time but IMO it would help the other 5 girls to get more exposure. And no hate to Haruka too, but the search scenes from Haruka arc on episode 5 is quite unnecessary and could be shorten, replaced by lovey-dovey scenes. There are quite many of those events on the game's after-school date event >.<
But just like you said, if it's adapted from manga or light novel, anime version of harem or romance series tends to omit unnecessary scenes and just focused on important flag/event. And Photo Kano gets the worse result since this is originally a love simulation game where all the dialogues/interaction on the gameplay and sub-event helps to build the romance between the MC and the girl so it feels natural, not rushed like we got on the anime so far
For the difference of story L(ove) and H(appy), from what I got from playing the game, both have romantic development on it, and the basic premise is still the same. Like on Aki arc, both have the same premise of Aki's other side outside the usual perfect top student and strict stuco prez she made, or on Haruka arc is for she and Kazuya get back to how they used to be when they were child. What set the stories apart from each other is the approach, L has normal event leads to romantic development, while H is played with series of comedic events but it also leads to romantic development as the girl and Kazuya grows to like each other after spending time together get through those things.
For example the Nonoka stories. I'll put it behind spoiler tag because it contains spoiler.
Spoiler for Nonoka arc:
From what you described, it does sound that story L focusing on their interaction/character development instead of the romance, but that's not the actual case. From my understanding, on both version of story, Nonoka has already like Kazuya when the game begins, it's just she hides her feeling because she knows the one Kazuya likes is Haruka and Nonoka is friend of Haruka too so she feels she doesn't want to stand in their way.
So on story L, when Nonoka knows Kazuya is finding a model for his photography study but he can't ask Haruka, she feels that it's the good opportunity to spend more time together with him so she asks him to accompany her on her softball practice first. But after they finish both her practice and Kazuya's photo session, when Nonoka sees Kazuya and Haruka talks together before going home, she feels down because she thinks she just lost the reason to spend time alone with Kazuya anymore. While on the story H it's indeed Nonoka is honest with her feeling in the middle way and show it to Kazuya, but the proposal of love is treated in comedic way, since she's asking for a duel with Kazuya to make him fall in love with her after she shows the feminine side of her, because Nonoka keeps failing on her attempts but that 'tomboy beyond help'/unfeminine side of Nonoka that makes Kazuya realizes now he loves her, not Haruka anymore.
The same on most heroine story too. Take example of Haruka route where on L they become close again step by step because photography and Haruka wants to help Kazuya become his model while on H Kazuya is 'forced' to get close to Haruka in order to protect her from his fellow clubmate's attacks (and treated in comedic way too). Or Hikari L story where Kazuya is sincere to want to see Hikari laugh and take picture of people again because he feels that it's too lonely for her to always alone; while on story H he never felt that way in the beginning for her, it's just (again, in comedic way) he gets many opportunities to take picture of Hikari's embarrassing side and make Hikari begins to interest to take picture of people, starting on herself and then Kazuya in order for 'revenge' so they get in the battle of taking each other's embarrassing picture that leads them closer and closer, and Hikari begins to like Kazuya's smile and starting to trust him, as well as falls in love with him.
That's good because you pretty much got me into this series. It's really fun chatting with you about it. Feel free to tell me if I'm bothering you if I overstep my bounds a bit. One user whom I can call a dear friend is upset with me right now because that.
Spoiler for Current PK Anime Reply - BakAnki:
The omnibus style I don't mind it, but the way they're doing is so cramped and out of focus that they just skimp past certain things before getting to the "core" of the story. I mean it can be done right, but so far it's not due to Haruka getting more screen time and there are still a handful of heroines left. It's like I said: I don't hate Haruka, but her route and issues are pretty straightforward and plain while the other heroines brought out something out the MC that the childhood friend scenario lacked.
You go make good points. The interactions and character development are there, but the presentation of it seems lacking and toned down due to it being cramped. There were so many interesting things I've read on your blog on the heroines, but to me it seemed like they toned down the "interest" aspect just to show the route, flag, date(s), and bonding. That's how most game, light novel, and manga adaptations are. It's a means to give a series, no matter how big or small, more fandom. Oreimo, Persona, Haganai, and To Aru Majutsu no Index are prime example to this. I don't mind it really, but presentation means everything if you're using the OSM (Original Source Material) to promote another mediums ie. games, anime, manga, novels etc.
I hope so too that the kiss scenes will be added or extra scenes in the BDs like they did with Amagami. Photo Kano has so much potential and I'll still follow the anime till its end, but the presentation feels toned down due to tight scheduling and one arc overlapping possible "extras" to even the odds. I'm a sucker for romance to be honest, but if there's no kiss, the romance to me is meaningless. Some romance anime I've watched don't have a kiss scene I was expecting and that really saddened me. Granted we still have 3 main heroines left to go, so maybe we'll get a kiss scene, hopefully.
One more thing: Do you think that the L(ove) and H(appy) sort of focus on development or romance depending on the pretext of the routes? Or does it go either way. I'll use Nonoka for example...
Spoiler for Nonoka Misaki L & H Routes - Just In Case:
L Route - Wants to perfect her Softball’s Rise Ball pitch and at the same time wants to model for Kazuya = Development>Romance. Romance was there, but development came first before all that.
H Route - Kiss by accidental. Proposal of love and never acting on it due to respect and feelings of a dear friend (Haruka) = Romance>Development. Development was their, but romance came first before all that.
Am I on the mark there or am I missing something. To me it feels like that, but could be wrong. Who knows? Sorry for talking up your time. I got a little bit into this. Will keep it moderate next time. Once again, please accept my apologies.
Ahaha, no probs. It always nice to be able to talk about Photo Kano anyway X3
I was gave up hope the first time I know it's only 1 cour with 12 episode. I honestly thought that they will only do full Haruka route with part of other girls's story added in-between to please the fans, so when we get the confirmation that it's an omnibus after all I was happy. No hate for Haruka too, since I like the character, but her route (both version) is one my least favorite on the game mostly because her interaction with the MC is too painful to watch most of the time >.<
And yeah, I was really hoping it get as much love as Amagami with 2 cour, 24 episodes so all heroine get enough, not rushed time to cover their story. The character development and interaction is enough, but I do want more. There's many interesting scenes for more lovey-dovey interaction on the sub-events on the game the anime didn't adapted. It really feels that the anime is only an ad for the PSVita game, they only give the essential scene but to get the whole experience we have to play (and buy) the game >.>
I hope we get deleted scenes, including the kiss scene, for the Blu-Ray/DVD version because even though I'm fine with no kiss scene, but I get that it's quite important for romance series like this. The epilogue for the two latest episodes do imply that Kazuya and the girl are couple in the end, but it does like it's missing something
Thanks for the clarification on that. I mean it truly seems unfair that Haruka gets a kiss scene while Hikari sort of got the short end of the stick. As much as I loved her route from checking out your blog and the anime, the episode really got my hopes up expecting when the tone and atmosphere screamed for a kiss to seal the deal. I mean if they had the time to show their date(s) and hot sexy pics of her in a swimsuit at the beach (which was boner approveable by the way!) why couldn't they spare a few seconds for one simple kiss.
I feel like we just got slapped in the face, seriously. It probably doesn't mean nothing to you, but to me a kiss scene in this type of anime means a lot to me! I just wish they went the Amagami direction of things and did a 3-4 episode heroine focus. Haruka pretty much got 2-4 episodes since the childhood friend route is so simple, and the Hikari's was so cramped that it felt sort of "incomplete".
Spoiler for Aki Route - Anime:
As much as I enjoyed the Aki episode despite it being rushed and cramped, but the one thing that irritated me the whole episode was...
Spoiler for Ready?:
Spoiler for Are You Sure?:
Spoiler for Here It Goes!:
Where was the bloody kiss scene!!! "Rolling on floor in anguish"
Anyway, two routes and no kiss scene. Confession, date(s), and epilouge scenes were nice, but I got my hopes up for kiss to happen and it didn't. The vanilla lover in me got crushed for the second time Childhood friend still reigns supreme, no surprise there -_-. No hate to Haruka, but give equal treatment to other heroines ie. One girl gets kissed they ALL must get kissed plain and simple.
I just hope the next girl's route gets better treatment. I haven't seen the preview for the next episode because I want to surprise myself on who's going to be next. Sorry for taking up your time, I really needed to get this off my chest.
Then I'll put it behind spoiler tag too, just in case...
Spoiler for Sanehara:
Yep, every girl that has their own route has the kiss scene. In most case it's only once after the confession scene, but on some route they had more than one. I remember Haruka H, Mai L, Tomoe, and Momoko route were those that have more than one kiss scene, Momoko has 3 kiss scenes, IIRC
I was kinda disappointed too that the anime only get 1 cour, making all remaining main heroines to only have one episode to cover their whole story. The lack of proper confession and kiss scene on Sanehara arc last episode are quite disappointing, but for me it's more romantic than Haruka arc, mainly because that scene on the hill (killer pick-up line from Kazuya there X3), boat and beach scene, and the photo board on Hikari's room. But yeah, at the very least they should make Kazuya calls Hikari by her first name on that boat scene
Does Hikari get a kiss scene in the game? I watched the latest episode of Photo Kano and I was so vexxed that there was no kiss scene. Romance was there, but it felt to cramped. The beach photo shoot was hot admittingly, but no kiss scene = a slap to the face.
I'm glad you're taking a liking to the series. The anime and the novels are really amazing, I'm sure you're going to enjoy it. The novel series had ten volumes and the anime had 24 episode, it's one of my favourite light novel series.
