I'm on the same boat not having watched the first Aquarion series. I have though seen every Macross series minus Macross 7... and in every single one of them is a love triangle... some of them not resolved.
As for the shipping war... its epic. I had Aquarion on a 6/10 when I first started watcing it because it was merely so bad its good, but this shipping war has jumped to a 7. 8 if my rooting couple wins (since I'm a Hiromi fanboy... Mikono x Amata is my preferred pairing)

I personaly havn't watched the first season,have no idea what the overall plot is about but I can watch this for the shipping war alone

Speaking of Okada,I got curious and wondered what was the show where she was first credited as series composer.
Turns out it's a daytime (6PM) magical girl show.
That sounds innocent enough,there should be no room in there for perv undertones....oh who am I kidding (could only find dubs) -

No,I don't know it,mainly because I don't read much scans and just go by whatever is available licenced in france.I'll check it out though,looks good.
