Your angst is showing. Haruhi stories, remember.
Kaisos: You just made me think of an eroge I recently discovered called Sumaga. Here's a quote from the main character: "I don't care how many Bad Ends I get, I'll have my revenge!" (The game is described as a "Life Revenge Adventure" game. Not really sure what that actually means, though [i.e. who he's getting revenge on and why].)
Also, it's apparently getting an expansion/special edition with the subtitle "We Don't Need a Happy End". XD
(There's currently a translation project ongoing for it, and I'm keeping my eye on that. This is one game I don't want to pass up.)
Happy End? What the hell is Happy End?
Actaully the question would be..."is there an end?"
@Ithekro: the POINT is to turn Haruhi into something angsty. I made the point long, long ago in the Genderbending topic that the Haruhi stories, although very positive in nature, naturally lend themselves to angsty works simply because the subject matter is often rather dark.
@Cat: Given that the creators of Sumaga appear to be the same as those of Chaos;HEAd and Saya no Uta, I'm pretty sure that they DON'T need a Happy End...
Sumaga looks like exactly the sort of eroge I'd want to avoid, however, judging by the images Sankaku Complex has of it.
As for Happy Ends in this, my plan is for the only genuinely Happy End to be the True End, which is intended to fit the game into actual Haruhi canon.
I wrote it up last night in a fit of artistic inspiration. =P
Whoa, spoilers dude. If that's your true end, isn't this whole situation JUST A DREAM or something? But honestly, that's what I thought would be most interesting and fun too. Deviate from canon, e.g. meeting up with a member of the anti-SOS dan; die horribly.
I'd like to suggest an expansion on the meta-route suggested earlier. After a string of bad choices that is out of character for Kyon, he is struck by paranoia and believes somebody is controlling his actions and orchestrating the entire world collision event for his/her own purposes (amusement).
As a result, Kyon second guesses all his instincts and decisions; so the rest of the choices in the game has unpredictable results; e.g. choosing to talk to Yuki might result in talking to Koizumi instead. It finally leads to a confrontation with the player, where you may choose to reveal his true nature of being a character in a VN.
The bad end is, in response to that, Kyon goes berserk and orders Yuki to format your computer.
How's that for meta-gaming.
If you disregard the lack of ethics of reformatting the player's computer (as well as the technical difficulties that would be involved), that's...actually a pretty darn good idea, in my opinion.
We will deviate from canon. Just not in the True Route.
And do you honestly think I'm stupid enough to make everything a dream?
We have a person with reality warping abilities. It has been proven that said reality warping abilities can be transferred to other individuals.
Let's see who gets where I'm going with this.
A good hint is that I like epic final fights.
Anyway, a meta-route would be nice and all, but that's really not what me and Danchou are going for here.
I do like your idea of major choices that go entirely against Kyon's mindset end up killing him, but this isn't F/SN with its 40 bad ends either. Only a few of these choices should be so deadly.
And no, we're not going to reformat the player's computer.
I don't even think that's possible.
"If you disregard the lack of ethics of reformatting the player's computer (as well as the technical difficulties that would be involved), that's...actually a pretty darn good idea, in my opinion."
... just put up a fake BSoD
That only really works if the game is fullscreened though. And not on a Mac.
And I'll say now that I don't play games fullscreen.
@ Kaisos :
1) The VN could just lock all extra content like the CG gallery, or even reset flags for the other routes to be nasty.
But let me digress a bit. I remember reading a news brief about a Japanese game based on the Tokyo Sarin gas attacks that formats your hard disk if you lose the game. But that was back in the Win95 days, when computers just ran on a dolled up DOS rather than the secure OSs of today. And it could be an 1st April joke or something; I just can't find any info about it now.
2) No, Just A Dream is a silly idea. It's an ancient trope dating back to the days when fantasy stories are not likely to be published unless the author explicitly states "It's all JUST A DREAM." Just like to toss that out so we could lampshade it a little.
We could stuff some of the philosophy into a Just A Dream handwave, probably via Koizumi.
So the things we don't remember, do they exist? How different is a lost memory to a forgotten dream? To paraphrase the Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi; "How do I know whether I was then a man dreaming he was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly dreaming he is a man?"
Could I digress some more? Remember that Bleach movie? They wanted to add tragedy/romance to the action by introducing a new girl, but they didn't want to mess with canon; so they end the movie by having the girl erased from existence and everyone loses their memory of her to make it consistent with the fact that the TV series never mentions her.
I think my philosophy of "EVERY END IS A BAD END" to be mentally punishing enough for the player, as well as my love of never explaining anything important.
We really don't need to dick with them even further than that.
I'm really more going for a Reset End rather than All Just A Dream. I want to prove that resets can actually be done fairly well, if there's enough emotionality in it BEFORE the Reset. And the character that causes it knows exactly what they're doing.
> as well as my love of never explaining anything important.
As in "forcing the player to piece the puzzle together themselves"?
Kyon's universe might need a reset to fit canon, but seitenkan is fanmade; so we could have things in that universe permanently changed. Kyonko could remember the events and reminisce in an epilogue chapter like Tsukihime's Eclipse epilogue.
Unless you planned to turn Kyon into someone like that fanon character interpretation of Marche from Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.
otai: Or it could just end up being Kyon and Kyonko who remember.
Yuki knows.....she aways knows...somehow.
As for EVERY END IS A BAD END....isn't that more a Higurashi type pattern?
@otai: I have no idea who Marche is. And no, Seitenkan may be fanmade, but
have no control over "official" Seitenkan canon. This is a doujin game.
@Cat: I was more thinking "fuck with the player as much as possible" but hey, that's fine too.
Seriously, go play Chaos;HEAd to get an idea of the sort of effect I want to go for here. Not only is it a fantastic game, it's informative!
And having only Kyon/Kyonko remember ruins canon. What I want to do is have Kyon remember her face, but not her identity.
I'll leave the rest up to Danchou to explain.
The Haruhi universe, as I have said, would tend towards depressing events and endings were it not for the overwhelming positivity of most of the characters. Remove that, and you get what I'm trying to get at.
The Haruhi PSP game did indeed provide some inspiration, as its bad ends (and some of its good ends) were sheer epic.
Project outlines are staying in the main thread.
"The Haruhi universe, as I have said, would tend towards depressing events and endings were it not for the overwhelming positivity of most of the characters. Remove that, and you get what I'm trying to get at."
So... completely change everyone's personality and we get an angstfest... got it!
