Anyone up to some kids games?
Here's the idea:
First we'll collect participants for the game.
The first one on the list takes a photo and sends it privately to the next one, who then tries to reproduce it within possibilities available and sends just the one he or she took to the next participant. And so on. So none of the photos are to be posted here before the end of the game.
When everybody's done with their photos they will be collected and posted as a batch in chronological order.
Sign up by posting in this thread by January 31
We'll start the actual fun and games in the beginning of February. Each participant will be given a week to take a photo to keep the schedule somewhat reasonable.

Only one week? That's a very short period of time for my schedule, but I suppose that for most people it's pretty long. I'll join in, as well.
Not sure how many people are still checking this group regularly. Is there any way we can promote this idea to even more people? In theory, anyone with a point-and-shoot or even a cameraphone could participate. Should we perhaps make this a thread in the fan creations forum so as to maximize exposure?
I'm interested but, like Ledgem, one week can go by very quickly for me, so I held off saying yes.
As for promotion; I would allow a thread in the Fan Creation section, provided it didn't exceed what the other groups have done (the artist group's contest vote thing, or the worm picture thing). Signatures are also permissible.
I will admit that week is quite short, however given the nature of this event I don't think it can be extended very much. For this to work we'd need at least 10 participants. And as nothing is published before the end of the round giving 3-4 weeks to take a photo which I would personally prefer would mean that the event would stretch to 7-9 months before anything gets published and if the number of participants is higher it will take even longer. I'm guessing that quite many at the bottom part of the list would lose their interest in the whole thing before their turn ever comes up. I may need to work on the idea a bit more and I'm thinking of extending the sign up period in order to get the kinks worked out.
The biggest issue to me in this is the running time. As participants can't work on their pictures simultaneously and I'd assume there are very few people here who can tell if they even can participate in this kind of event in 6-9 months from now.
One alternative could be a similar playful competition as SotM and Artists group's one. Actually the form that the Artist group's competition is run could be applied directly to this one as well. Winner picks a theme and then there's 3 weeks entry period, at the end of which there would be in group vote for the 3 best entries, which then would be put up for public vote to determine the winner.
Maybe if you add some sort of synchronisation, rather than blindly sending to the next person on a list.
Start with a list of people so people have a rough idea of when there turn will come around,
rather than just sending to the next person each time; send them a PM/VM saying that the image is ready. If they reply within a day, send them the actual image. If they don't, repeat the process with the next name on the list. Once an exchange is completed, post an update here. The person has one week from the time on the update post to complete the task. At which point you repeat the process, but rather than selecting the next name, you look for the first unused name. If they don't complete it in the time... well I've not thought that far ahead.
Something like that though. You can probably smooth the process out a little, but the idea is that if anyone doesn't think they can do it in a week they're given they can be skipped until later.
That's a great idea and it would actually render the separate sign up redundant as it could be run on first come first served manner side by side with the game itself. When someone is done with his/her picture they could just post here that they're done and the then send the picture to the first one that signs up to continue. And when the picture is sent post a confirmation of that as well. So a participant would have a week to take a photo from the date he/she signs up. This would allow the event to continue even if there comes times when everybody is busy with other things. There would just be a bit of a gap.
I'd set a goal to 10 pictures so the event will run for as long as it takes to gather at least that. When we're closing in on that goal I'd post a query if there are still interested to participate and the event would be extended accordingly.
One question that needs to be resolved is the archiving of the pictures. If the event ends up running for a long period of time I think it'd be better if the pictures would be collected as the event goes on, as there are no assurances that at the end of the event the participants would post their entries.
I suppose who ever goes first could collect the pictures since it wouldn't compromise the end result. I suppose I could go first and collect the pictures as well since I don't see a reason why I wouldn't be able to see the whole thing through. And if something comes up I could ask someone that has already participated to take over.
I could also give the ones that have already participated access to the pictures so they could monitor the progress. But only if they solemnly swear not to give access to the photos to ones that haven't already participated.
I think that would allow enough flexibility for the event to work.
I talked to a friend of mine who has organized a few similar events in his photography club and he made a point which I found rather good one. They organized the first one in the way described above and they weren't too pleased with the results. Problem being that better the participants succeed, the more boring the end result is, so they have run the event with the following rules instead from there on.
Take one object or detail out of the previous picture which you incorporate in your photo. They excluded the obvious ones like sun, sky, moon etc. So in effect the concept is actually a bit closer to a graphics worm (such as
) than broken telephone but would probably produce a bit more interesting results and leave more room for creativity.
That would allow for a much wider scope. Having never tried it before anyway, I'm happy to defer to your friend's observations. Besides, you're kind-a running the thing anyway, so if you want to do it that way... lets give it a try

Things have been a bit stalled since I've been a bit busy with other projects. I'll see if i can get things rolling over the weekend.
For now I'd keep this in group. Just post the results as sort of an exhibition when we're done. I think it would keep things simpler and easier to manage. We have currently 17 members most of which are somewhat active on the forums so I'm hoping that most members would be able to participate. I was thinking of dropping some advertisement spam to members' profiles when I get the event up and running.
I ended up being quite busy with other projects. I'm overall having a bit of a hard time finding time to take the first photo. I'll probably be a quite busy for the next two weeks as well. I suppose I can find time to organize things but it seems photographing is pretty much out of the question.
So... Any volunteers? I'll give a briefing what should be taken into account.
I'm back and I have the first picture ready and waiting. I'll post a new thread for the sign up etc. stuff in a minute.
So for this event. It's just objects and suches in the pictures correct, and the next picture should correspond with the previous in such a manner correctm, escimo?
Yes. You can pick any object or detail in the previous picture and display something similar in yours.

An update on the progress. I was planning on taking a new first photo for the event today but the weather turned quite horrible. It was raining cats and dogs so didn't feel like risking my gear since it's not weather proved.
I'll wait a few more hours if NightWish would submit an entry. If not I'll either see if I can find a suitable one out of my older unpublished photos or take a new arrangement photo of something.
It's been raining for about a week where I live... it's been soaking wet...
