The All-Purpose Macross Discussion Thread
Oh, Chris Roberts finally coming out with a new gig? His games often impressed graphically, and his Privateer series were quite awesome. The last game I played with his involvement was Freelancer, and I liked it very much.
Now, if only his storytelling talents would match his artistic presentation... because Wing Commanders' story was totally substandard.
I think for its time it was quite okay in terms of stories for computer games. Not RPG standard, maybe, but as far as giving a space sim a story goes, it was acceptable.
This might just be the game that makes me go back to playing on my PC.
Actually, the story to Wing Commander always made me chuckle. Washington DC as the capital of humanity... oh man...
And everyone else being a minority.
That being said, the Kilrathi had other enemies than humanity. One supposedly given them a very good fight before the former was gutted by the Terrans, but they've yet to show up on the radar.
The recent Black Ops 2 also made me chuckle in the same light. USS Barrack Obama? Secretary of State Petraes? ... Yeah,
What blasphemy is this? You don't play games on your PC anymore, Beto? This is unheard of! And here I thought everyone played games on the computer using emulators. I too do so. You should try it sometime. Or perhaps you don't have a powerful computer to do so? But seriously, the PC is perhaps the best screen to play games on from all consoles.
Heh, I fear I don't even have an emulator for any console stuff. Then again, I primarily play strategy games and RPGs ( since space sims are few and between nowadays ), so I mostly don't need the console stuff anyway.
I have an emulator for N64, GameCube, Wii, and all old handheld games including the DS. This screen is better for colors versus my TV which is from the early 2000s. The reds don't dash across the screen on here. Although I bought the Skyward Sword for the Wii, I prefer to play the volcano parts on this monitor to avoid the bright reds. Good thing is you can transfer the save files because the Wii supports SD cards.
Maggy, all those games are on the PC
I remember Wing Commander! My friend always made fun of me when I figured out who the killer/traitor was before he was revealed.
~gasps and points at the screen~ "It's HIM!"
Also, the last console I ever bought was SEGA Genesis that came bundled with Altered Beast.
I actually bought the Wii, and just recently too, because I needed a new splash of games to my plate. It isn't that bad. Although, I do digress, while the Wii remote is easy to use, the Skyward Sword controls are shit... literally. When you have to press the down arrow to reconfigure your controller to aim arrows, you know the controls are shot. Hopefully the Wii U will have more success in this?
I haven't tried the 3DS. I am also hoping Macross related materials remain on Playstation related consoles. Nintendo just can't handle their beauty. However, I do digress that some materials of Macross could use more timing and planning, better graphics, and a more intriguing story? Even the Triangular one bores me with its cliches and lack of superior graphics compared to older games (like the Zelda series in particular, or perhaps Final Fantasy is a good marker too). I am often depressed by how much they hype up Macross related material only for it to fall short. (Not that I can actually complain since many Zelda fans say the same of Skyward Sword and its preview being much like Twilight Princess, the previous game in the series, but getting the exact opposite like Wind Waker, the previous of the previous game.)
I've given up on PC gaming just recently - the last game I tried was
Deus Ex - Human Evolution
got on the PS3, natch), right after the
Star Wars: The Old Republic
was over. I even hooked up my PS3 controller to it, but it was no good. Also, the fact that my notebook heats up way too much doesn't help matters much - HP and AMD, never again.
So, yeah, I'm strictly a console - and iOS - player for the foreseeable future. That future hopefully ends when the new Chris Roberts' game
does manage to come out.
Until then, I got
too much stuff to play already. Just so you guys know, I've only recently (in the last month or the one before, give or take) finished Metal Gear Solid IV (what a
game!) - which I bought alongside my PS3, in
! Like it, laying around in various states of unopenedness/unplayedness (yes, I know those are not real words) I have upwards of 70 games to get to - not even counting the digital games, safely secured on my 640GB HD, like the multitude of free PS+ games.
Yes, I'm kinda compulsive. And lazy.
Oh, boy, was SWTOR a disaster. <sigh> And I had so many hopes in that game, I even bought the Collector's Edition.
I have an i5 Core Processor but even I have to debug a few games before playing. For instance, to get the highest resolution of the textures, I have to rip information from the original console in Dolphin. Otherwise, the only issue is languages.
Not that I'm complaining. I just bought an imported Japanese 3DS
the Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time, in Japanese, bundled all for $120.
both movies of Macross Frontier, the hybrid Blu-Ray packs, bundled together for a total of $80. This was without shipping. I actually found a store that sells this stuff. I'm planning on buying the series from it too at $140. That is a bargain considering shipping prices. Ironically, if I could read the text of the settings for the TLoZ game, perhaps I could save but not end up all the way back at Kokiri village (child Link) or the Temple of Time (adult Link) whenever rebooting the console.
I'll be watching the both Frontier movies later this week and give an updated review. Also, I will check out the extras to also write reviews in case anyone who doesn't own the movies wishes to learn of its content (ones that weren't able to snag it online or ones that weren't released online). I doubt that I'll make any references to lines since I don't actually understand Japanese completely (I understand basics and concepts, phrases and such) but I shall attempt to help those new to Frontier and were unable to buy the hybrid packs on their extra content.
Also, I have an update if I ever wrote about this anywhere online: I now have a recharging station for my Wii remotes. So you'll hear no more (or any) complaints about Fi in Skyward Sword insisting my "Wii remote batteries have depleted." That was annoying. For $20, I just said the hell with it and bought them. Ugh... the rumble feature kills batteries in the remotes.
My thoughts on the PS3 are usually that great games come to it, but usually they aim to port games to it that men will enjoy. There are not many games aimed for females in that section. Nintendo supports everything. However, on the other hand, X360 is similar to PS3. This is why PS3 and X360 are more popular than the Wii (although the Wii U is now the hottest item available).
I bought the
. While the whole FB7 cut-and-paste-movie project is random silliness, I do enjoy the interseries song mixing.
Now now, SWTOR wasn't a disaster, it just wasn't the "second coming" that people thought it would be. The storylines for the Sith were actually fun to play through.. I even had a fairly high level Republic Trooper..
Anyways, Macross thread right? Man this looks awesome:
The graphics are indeed splendid. I am definitely getting this game, although I had expected something along the lines of leading an entire squadron into battle and managing your own Macross Quarter...
That does look pretty good.
Oh, how I'd love some english subtitles...
Yeah, well. I fear until the rights revert to their Japanese owners by miracle, Harmony Gold will forever destroy hopes of non-Japanese Macross fans. Yay for eternal IP rights, I guess.
Thing is, if Kawamori is smart, they could just make an English subtitled version of
in Japan... for the sake of international releases
