The Shipping War!
Well, continuities are wholly another subject and difficult to gauge, as every media released so far has differed ( greatly or subtly ) from another in regards to Macross Frontier.
But the manga is as official as it gets.
Oh... It's that word again...
Man... Save me for giving an explanation on it...
"Oh noez the manga is not official, because the degree Kawamori had control over it is a bit nebulous! Ranka won, lulz!"
The last sentence was sarcasm, though.
It's just sad that you guys have been reduced to making specious arguments over irrelevant specifics, because the main message is clear as day and is trumpeted by about every official release we have had since the movies: Sheryl/Alto is canon.
Official manga definitely trumps anything else. If it were yet another doujinshi, that would be an entirely different story, and open game for calling
. Unless Kawamori says otherwise, of course. That's pretty much the only recourse for the anti-AS shippers out there, besides the (imo
) alternate continuity defense.
The first movie was fine. The second is like horrible fanfiction gone wrong. (This speaking in more than terms of triangle here.) The movies tell an entirely different plot which makes the series more questionable on which girl he would've chosen in the end given the circumstances if we trust that the second movie's ending plot-wise was supposed to have been the series' ending. Plus, because of the triangle issue, they left the plot unresolved in the movies. So there is no real win here.
If the movie had concluded with a Ranka-end, you would have had a different opinion. You know it, and we know it. The more of this goes on, the more pathetic this looks. We honestly don't need you to remind us, every 3 post, or every 3 sentences how awesome/great Ranka is. She isn't.
LMK, its fine and dandy if you hold Ranka in such high esteem, and think of her as a model teenager, an idol, saint & angel. Fine and dandy. Unfortunately, a majority of us simply do not, and will never share
of your viewpoints.
Quite frankly, she
could have been
a parent's worst liability, a teacher's worst torment, a sibling's worst experience and a society's worst nightmare.
And at least that would have given people something to write home about.
Unfortunately, she is none of those. She is bland, whiny & childish character who cannot assume the responsibility of the power she wields. At the end, she was just another teenager with amplified angst and no trace of growing up, no regret, no responsibility, no
I am sorry I screwed up
and no punishment. Her only redemption in regards to character development being the movie, and thats only possible because she didn't commit the same
she did in the series.
You want to hold Ranka on a pedestal? Fine. Just keep in mind that most of us won't, and never will. If she was that awesome, you'd think she'd receive more attention from fans in the show's country of origin. Except to the more casual fans of the series, she is just another random one out of millions passerby with green hair.
And we have plenty,
As for you, expressing the same incoherency and complaint only make your beloved look bad and does nothing more than to demonstrate what a terrible sport you are. The series ended. Move on.

Lastly, I think Megumi Nakajima is a very talented lass, but thats another story.
None of what I said implied to Ranka. And everything you said falls right back on you. If your character had lost, you'd be in my boat thinking how the movies were a piece of crap (as you word it). So don't boast because quite honestly, that assumption works both ways.
Quite frankly, and I even said it on the main board, opposite is opposite.
In the series, the triangle was unresolved but the war was finished.
In the movies, the triangle was resolved but the war was unfinished.
Two sides of a coin.
But the biggest piece to this is how much they really had to change the plot so the movies could fit it. But they still left one very important piece hanging in the air: the unresolved war. So for both sides of the coin, one thing always has to be sacrificed for the sake of the other in Frontier. Therefore, neither is truly canon because neither resolves one or the other. They instead clash.
The movies are just one big fanfic gone wrong. They have a horribly paced plot, starting out gruesomely slow in the first movie and becoming rapidly too fast to follow in the second movie. Character personalities were changed or warped (including the main three). Oh, and have I mentioned about that childhood scene that never even
in the series? Yeah; that's a way to win... instead of actually being original, they went for the old cliches.
All of this added together to resolve the love triangle foolishly by choosing the one least likely to win in the time span with the cheat already in place, of course; just so fans would enjoy it. Oh, and they forgot all about the war because they were too busy trying to put more time for the two so-called stars to be together never mind this is about a love
angle. They wasted more times making fans happy than actually serving up the real dish. I call
So go ahead and praise your sweet so-called queen. Congratulate her on receiving a cliche childhood memory that never existed, praise her for being a symbol of perfection and completely losing all human aspects of her from the series, and praise her for being the reason they ran out of screen time to close off the war.
Hm, but now... I can't said praise her for that... that was the writers fault entirely for dragging on the first movie with such a horrible amount of recycled footage, drama, and various other very boring things when they could have sped through it using the scenes in the second movie, therefore enabling Alto to return to Sheryl in the end. But no, they decided fans didn't deserve that happy ending. Sheryl didn't deserve that happy ending. So they decided to lag, be productive, and add the triangle in. Bah, fat lot of good that did because queen Sheryl took up 90% of both movies and left room for literally no development from other characters.
Truly, you put your foot in your mouth here by saying I only care about Ranka. I wanted to see more of Michael, wanted to see him do the dynamic things that he'd accomplished in the series, I wanted to see Catherine learn of her father, be with Ozma, and I wanted to see Nanase and Luca regroup; but did any of these things happen? No; not even one of them did. There was no real interaction for any of these things. Yes; images... oh how I love stilled images of things occurring, but no interaction on screen otherwise.
Oh yeah, where did all of Alto's problems go, you know, the things that made him a character I like? They all flew out the window as he accepts actually being a girl (in a mental sense). I'm sorry but no, I don't accept the character being butchered that way.
So, to sum up all of that: I don't like the movies one bit for all of those reasons. Losing in a love triangle isn't always the whole story behind why people dislike something. It can be a factor, agreed; but not in this case. And, as said above, that assumption works both ways, considering you were just as likely to have lost the love triangle as I, and you would've felt exactly the same way, done the exact same things, and had the exact same arguments. So next time you put your foot in your mouth, think about that instead of preaching of how you really hate a character.
Can I just say I
the movies? Great animation, nice production values even with some reused footage, not simply a retelling of the series (honestly, if that's what it was, people would complain way more). The new additions to the soundtrack, not so much, tho...
I grew to like the songs for the movies more than the ones for the TV series, in Ranka's case it's because of how Megumi matured and the songs with her, and in Sheryl's case... I dunno, I just do. And then theres the Christmas album. Though Yousei will remain my favorite, nothing will top that. Other than that, I'm with Beto.
I'd have to say its Yousei, Northern Cross and lets not kid ourselves, Diamond Crevasse!
I also like
Don't be late
, but not nearly as much as I do others.
Yeah, those are my favs from the TV series, though I mainly listen to Shinkuu no DC now.
Hey, I think the movies were vastly inferior to the series and my favorite couple won out. ^^
All of you actually encourage the reason the mods are so pissed; because all Macross becomes to everyone is one big shipping thread.
No matter if a person is shipping or not, you all chop responses up to it. What's the use in discussing anything with you? And you wonder why AR fans left here? PFFT; there's your answer.
It's vastly preferable to discussing how the different Valkyries compare to each other, IMO.
Also, destroying illogical argumentation is fun.
a little OT, perhaps, but...
Is it just me, or did a few posts just vanish in the thread on the forum...?
That was quick...although I see that the mods didn't keep their promise to ban people who started that nonsense again...
Wait, we are at a point where the mods threatened to ban people for discussing shipping stuff? Or is that something to do with Yot and LMKs spat from a while back?
Leave me out of this discussion. It isn't like I'm the only one who went raging into shipping. I have calmed down since my arrival into the fandom of Frontier. My topic of discussion was things I disliked outside of shipping for the movies. If they consider that shipping, it just supports my previous post above.
Wait, we are at a point where the mods threatened to ban people for discussing shipping stuff?
Yep, that is why mods will now
redirect all associated
to this group instead. Although it really wasn't this group's intended purpose but...
And to no one's surprise... it is actually our most popular thread!!!
Wow. Mod cleansing.
