Rinne No Lagrange
All I know is, next time I visit Kamogawa, I am going to fear random objects falling from space...
Look out for the Jersey Club. ^^
Well, the ending turned out to be everything I expected (almost), so I am happy.
What do you guys think?
I'll tell you about Wednesday, when I'm not 20 minutes away from the launch of Mists of Pandaria. ^^
I've watched the last episode twice so far. I'm kind of disappointed. I liked this series so much, I really wanted it to have a strong and satisfying ending. To me this one felt kind of lacking. There were various issues, but one of the biggest for me was that all the miracles caused by the Rinne made things seem too easy and too perfect. I want a happy ending, but I want a bit less Deus Ex Machina and a little more Earn Your Happy Ending. Using U-GO as an example -I'd like it if we were left with the impression that it will become a better place because Muginami is going to work to make it a better place, not because she wished for it to be a better place while she was in the Rinne.
Though I guess all those miracles do a nice job of proving that the Rinne can be something other than a force of destruction. That's one thing that could prove difficult with the alternate ending fanfic idea I've been cooking up in my head. (Yes, I was dissatisfied enough to think up idea for an alternate ending fanfic, although whether I'll find the time and more importantly the commitment to see writing such a fanfic through is questionable.)
In spite of everything I still really want to see a subbed version of the Kamogawa Days OVA.
The series was about friendship, the plot ( although very good in places ) was ancillary. And on the thing it wanted to deliver, it did. Best anime since years!
I'd kind of let this topic slip from my priorities list, but I thought I'd post some thoughts on what could have been with the series ending.
One user on the main forums predicted the show would end with Dizelmine and Yurikano remaining together in the Rinne while Lan assumed leadership of Le Garite and Muginami did the same for De Metrio. Madoka would act as the go between to make sure what happened between Dizelmine and Villagiulio didn't happen between her friends. While I had a couple issues with the idea (Muginami doesn't have a royal birthright and frankly doesn't strike me as Queen material anyway, and I kind of prefer the idea of character coming back and making things right instead of remaining in the Rinne) but I did kind of like it because it harkens back to Yoko's words to Asteria back in Season One when she noted that Madoka wasn't the only Vox pilot and noted how the number three crops up a lot in Earth myths and religions. "One is not enough to sustain. Two would split apart. With three, there is finally stability." Where Yurikano made the mistake of taking herself out of the picture in the hope of stopping the conflict between her brother and the man she loved, Madoka will be there to knock some sense into Lan and Muginami should they ever come into conflict (kind of like what she did at the beginning of Season Two).
Building on some of these ideas, I'd kind of liked to have seen an ending that saw Dizelmine and Yurikano return from the Rinne and marry. Yurikano could then correct her past mistake of trying to solve things by taking herself out of the picture by instead being there to act as peacemaker in trouble cropped up between Dizelmine and her brother again in the future. There would be an acknowledgement that all three have things they need to make amends for, but still a sense that this is something worth celebrating. Only major problem is that even with a marriage to seal the peace this time around it's probably a bit of a stretch to think that Dizelmine could politically survive his betrayal of the existing peace treaty . Well, that and finding a good way to drive home that the Rinne can be something aside from a force of destruction without all those miracles.
Still I think there's some good potential in the ending I thought up. We could watch the De Metrio bishies bawl their eyes out at the loss of their idol. Villa could joke that Dizel had better treat his little sister right, and he could reply that he hopes Villa will deal with him personally if he doesn't. Then Yurikano could tell them that if there's any trouble the two of them will be answering to
As for our three heroines, Madoka can still take the sweats club intergalactic, with their first big project being Muginami's attempt to help her home planet. Maybe Madoka's lined up some help from the people of Kamogawa, and Lan's planning to help out as soon as she can get free of her obligations as Le Garite's princess. Maybe there'd even be a way to work in a little hint of yuri so that all that teasing along the way didn't feel like a cop out.
