Fall 2012 Anime Season
Anyone been keeping up with Total Eclipse? The show has its share of bad parts and the ending was kind of a disappointment, but when it was good, it was
. Also Yui has matured into one of my favorite heroines of this year.
Not I. I did not like the show and I think Satelight's involvement was sort of underwhelming
I wish they would just animate the original AGE VN instead of trying to create a brand new story.
The production values could definitely stand some improvement. There's actually some very good material in the later arcs though, and I generally prefer the characters in Total Eclipse to the ones in the main storyline (although I think some of the secondaries like Tarisa and Vincent could have used more focus).
I actually have some doubts about how well the main Muv-Luv storyline would work as a anime. Alternative can be amazing at times but its got other sections that drag it down even in VN form -and what works in a VN isn't necessarily going to work well in an anime. Making the main storyline work well as an anime strikes me as a serious challenge.
Considering I dropped most of the shows this season either to catch up on real life and spend time with family and friends; I chose one to keep up with.
Sword Art Online
- initially, the animation was horrible, and came up short compared to the shows this season. The plot did not help, for it jumped through huge chunks of the novel quickly, leaving a whip-lash effect. However, as its first half ended, I could not help but be addicted to the dynamic of Kirito and Asuna. They are just that great of a dynamic. The second half of the series... I'll admit to having stopped at 16 and rejoining everyone at 23 for the finale in 25, and caught up with everything in-between. For a series that started off with amazingly hateful remarks from me, I grew to enjoy it so much. In the end, I enjoyed the final two episodes,
the beat down of the major villain in the story, and Kirito unwilling to kill someone down to Asuna waking up and them becoming a couple in reality.
Kirito - I hardly thought of him as a bad character despite the large plot chops, for he certainly started out as a hero, and a badass one at that (don't compare him with Shu!). As the series progresses, I enjoyed his ability to throw simple romance aside for the sake of people around him, understanding the gravity of the situation in front of him. He was hardly a character to bitch about. Now, the second half, I agree he became a bit too emo for my liking, crying and bitching about things instead of handling the situation, but I also believe this is made up for by his rescuing Asuna and owning up to his manhood once more by defeating all the enemies in his path to do so.
Asuna - She is my favorite character this season. Initially, I'd stamped a label of tsundere on her, and as you know, I dislike all tsundere girls; however, that label soon fell off, for she isn't a tsundere at all. Her attitude changed to that of a typical girl, one whose heart has fully opened, and I watched her care and live with Kirito. Their married life was cute to watch. My favorite aspect of her is the ability to hold her own in a fight, or also withstand torment, all for his sake. She is rated #1 for this season of anime by me.
For those who loved Kirito and Asuna, my Christmas present to you is a video of their love:
