If it helps you any, Magnus; various Chinese writing is similar to Japanese. That could help you if you find an online Chinese dictionary. But don't be fooled into thinking those symbols have the same meaning as in Japanese. I hope that helps you a little if you wish to read the manga yourself without a translation (or translator).
By the way, everyone: a scanlation only refers to translated scans of a manga/novel.
I have not heard of a raw book scan being called a "scanlation."
Furigana atop the kanji can help, but interviews and some manga don't have that. Kanji have a lot of different meanings and readings and characters can also talk in different dialects. The thug who tries to harass Sheryl says 'ringo' (=apple) but the word is written with katakana, the Vajra Queen's (aka Mothmonster) words are written in katakana and kanji with katakana used above, and while some words have kanji characters and they get used most of the time, some characters in stories have the words written out in hiragana instead. The things I learn when reading manga.
Not to mention how you use different words in different situations for the same thing, but with different characters... but it's fun to learn and while I am interested in Chinese, I think Japanese is easier. Tak should know best though, being a native speaker.
LMK: I think the scans are chinese scanlations, not scans of a Chinese edition of the manga, because some parts of it have the Japanese text intact, the covers for one.
In the dress?
Wait, you are actually imagining it? Ooooooh boy...
Japanese text intact, the covers for one.
It is indeed a scanlation. Though keep in mind, if this was an official Taiwanese release, the real deal actually wouldn't look much different. Expect 75% Chinese mixed with 25% Japanese
Yes; agreed. Japanese is always easier to read. Once you learn enough about one language, learning another is harder (or so it will appear).
In my experience with learning Japanese, I have found it harder to learn Korean or Chinese than to learn Japanese. Perhaps this is because I have always shown a strong interest in Japan altogether; but it is true that learning any third language is always impressively stronger.
For me, after learning how to speak phrases and talk in Japanese, it becomes hard to learn Chinese, Korean, Spanish, and German due to the dialect and speech patterns. It shocked me at first because I am 1/4 German on my mother's side. But, alas, I chose to wait too long to learn any German.
@LMK: I'm not trying to get a translation, the summaries Matts made a few weeks ago are enough for me to get a general idea of what is going on. Thanks once again for those, Matts!
@Tak: Come on, how can I resist a line like that? If there ever was a better set-up for that joke, I wouldn't know how to create it.
No problem. Hope I can get some summaries done for Macross FF when I get it sometime next month. Since it takes place between the 2 movies, some parts of it might be interesting to fill in the 2-3 month gap. At the very least, the scans I saw show quite a lot of humor.
I'd love to read that.
@Magnus: Still, I hope that advice helps in the future should you decide to do it.
@Matts: Will Ranka be in it at all?
Yeah, Ranka is in it too, don't know how much, but from the scans Neldorwen posted on tumblr probably more than I thought. Megane-san is a Sheryl fangirl (at least I think Megane is female) but likes Ranka a lot too. There's a picture of a lingerie photoshoot for the girls and Alto freaks them out when they see him there.
There's another scene where Sheryl puts on a 'May'n wig', and both Ranka and Alto are there. Ranka also poses in her Niji-iro Kuma Kuma outfit. Neldorwen is collecting the NewType ACE magazines so I don't know if I'll be getting all the chapters the scans are from, or just the first 4-5. I don't even know if there is a cover yet, I just clicked on the pre-order button when I saw it on my bookstore's list with Megane's name.
Thanks for the info, Matts.
I look forward to it then.
Thanks for the images,
. Will have to check them better when I get home and can actually use a decent internet connection, tho.
Also, you and
, eh? I'm rooting for ya!
Hey, it's the mystical dress, how can I not make this joke? ^^
Gravitas Free Zone
Ahhahahaha, the XB-70 Valkyrie bomber!
A guy is streaming his progress in the game on niconico, is it alright to link here? If not, just go to niconico and search マクロス30.
Edit: Oh boy. Aisha: 'I'm not a genius girl. I a genius
Marina-chan is using her cute but sexy voice this time.
It will be 2 weeks before I get it
Yes, please post the link. Who doesn't want to be spoiled is not forced to click it.
Uh, Nico-Nico is viewable by everybody or only people with accounts? If the case is the latter, do they make it easy for non-Japanese speakers ( and readers ) to create an account or is it "blindly press buttons and hope that you are not auto-registering as a sex offender" or something like that? And I guess streaming means it's only a life feed, no recordings?
I was watching this, but it doesn't seem to be online now
. MW has links posted in the game's thread when someone starts playing live.
It's easy to create accounts on NicoNico, you give them an e-mail adress, they send you a link to click on, fill out the form and your ready to go.
I don't know about recordings, for now I only found streams.
Thanks, I'll check it out.
If anybody sees recordings ( as in Youtube videos and so on ), please post a link.
Many thanks, Matts! You're the best!
Don't mention it, I just have way to much time to lurk due to my health. My credits go to MW and tumblr.
