Winter 2013 Season
@Darth: I never said he was a person involved in EVOL. My point is not to judge a series based on its half-point. Likely because you'll be disappointed by its end.
@Matts: I watched the original series as a teenager (around 14 or so) and found it to be interesting in comparison with Sailor Moon, etc. that I'd seen at the time. Plus, during those years, Macross II had given me a bad impression overall of the full series. So I believe first impressions are important here.
But given its year, SnA was still a great story, and it had some of the best animation for that year overall. I'll never quite understand why it wasn't popular but I'd chop it up to the U.S. taking almost two years to bring it over plus it never aired anywhere but on Starz (upper cable station). I saw the original Japanese version translated by various different providers.
And gods, this was before torrents moved at almost the speed of light.
In reference to sub-forums and fan/social groups, it's been my experience that the social/fan groups die out faster than the forums. Take Code Geass for example or Gundam, both of which should be dark, yet loyal fans keep them up and running with fan art, new series adaptations, and of course speculation on both upcoming rumors, fanfics, and rehashing the old series.
So perhaps a helpful pointer could be used to point fans in the right direction to the appropriate social/fan group? But then isn't the forum designed for discussion and debate on various topics too? Lord knows the General Chat section is full of various topics....enough to make philosophers go "Acht Von Himmel!"
I like AS as it is, it's membership is very diverse and brings a lot of fans from across the globe together, trolls included, but it's still primarily an anime site, and that's why we're all here.
@Lost_Cause: CG doesn't apply as a good example. The problem isn't about activity but what
of activity is taking place. Macross is prime for its shipping right now. Gundam is a good example (since it does have minor romances). However, the problem is that the mods take "debates" as if they are "wars" and subtract all of us for even speaking about it. We are not allowed to debate with others on even our point of views. The lack of new merchandise and events for Macross have also left the forum on standstill too.
That's because most of said debates usually end in a donnybrook, with rabid fan shipping, and polarized positions. The Geass Romance threads are perfect examples, as I think there has been 4 of them.
If the mods would shut down said trolls before they get everybody riled up, perhaps a meaningful discussion could take place.
Updates on the four new for this season shows that I'm still watching:
Maoyuu Maou Yuusha:
An odd mix of intellectual and cliche, but it works, more or less. Though it kind of bugs me that Maou is introducing so many new technologies and ideas and such. She feels like a bit of a borderline Mary Sue in some ways.
This show has been much better than I feared it would be, but its no Mai-HiME or Macross Frontier. I also think it doesn't compare well to last year's
Rinne no Lagrange
, which I felt was a bit more sophisticated and had better characters (though on the other hand part of my dissatisfaction with the ending to Lagrange was that it seemed to brush aside some of the things it raised and wrapped things up too neatly).
While not perfect, it can be an entertaining dramedy. (I call it a "dramedy" because of its strange mix of comedy with heavy drama.)
I don't actually consider this very good (even compared to Kotoura-san) but for some reason I've kept up with it.
I'm still watching some carry overs as well.
Zetsuen no Tempest
Shin Sekai Yori
Ixion Saga DT
. Actually it occurs to me that Space Brothers is pretty much the only show I'm watching right now that is going to continue into next season. Oh well, I guess I'll either pick up a bunch of new stuff or have more time to do other things (to be honest ten shows seems like a bit much when I count them all out like this).
Gravitas Free Zone
I'm watching GuP, SSY, Maoyuu, Vividred, Space Bros, Shirokuma Cafe, and... Cuticle Detective Inaba.
