Omake Fic: Another Dog Tale
Omake Fic: Another Dog Tale
A/N: Starting the new year right, by getting a bit of a fic done.
Besides, I'm posting Cress fics for the even-numbered chapters of "Tome of Eldritch Omake," and I have a few gaps in the schedule.
Story time was Cressidor Blan-Virgine's favorite time of day. This was something that she was not embarrassed to admit, even though she had reached the advanced and mature age of seven. Mind you, her mother Amoretta would have been disappointed in her
she been embarrassed to admit it, since Amoretta put a very high priority on honesty. But more than that, her mama Lillet was a really
storyteller, who knew just how to make her laugh with a funny story or keep her on the edge of her seat with an exciting story or make her shiver with a (very rare, for special occasions) scary story. And she was really sneaky about the "mom" part, since she wouldn't just come out and
what the moral of a story was when it had one, so sometimes it'd be a couple of days before Cress realized that there was a lesson in there.
Lillet, for her part, loved it as well. Some of her favorite childhood memories had been when Grandpa Blan would lean back in his chair, light his old, cracked briar pipe, and treat the kids to one of his seemingly endless stock of tales. The old man hadn't just attracted the children, though—Lillet's parents, her Aunt Ginny, and the occasional guest often would stop and bend an ear when Grandpa got going.
She couldn't help but be a little bit proud of herself, because she was able to achieve the same effect. Amoretta joined the two of them nearly every night when she wasn't working at the theater, of course, as did her cat, Grimalkin, but on most nights the gallery that ran around the library's upper level attracted a few of the servants, human and elven alike, who found that by some coincidence the job they were doing took them until just after the words, "The End." Lillet never bothered to chase them off, though on certain occasions where she wanted it to just be family she'd save the story for Cress's bedtime.
However, it was the most common guest that caused the problem that night. Lillet and Cressidor were just getting settled in on the couch, when Cress's dog Shuck came bounding into the room. As perhaps fitting for the daughter of the kingdom's Mage Consul, Shuck was a barghest, a fire-breathing Black Dog of legend who, now nearly full-grown, had his back come level with the top of Lillet's head when she was standing. Tongue lolling happily at the sight of his mistress, he leaped into the air and landed full-length on the couch.
"Ooof!" Lillet and Cress grunted together as the breath was driven from their bodies, but they were drowned out by the snapping of wood and the grating of nails being pulled free. All four legs of the couch broke as one, and the piece of furniture dropped six inches to the rug with a jarring impact.
"Shuck," she groaned, "I hate to have to be strict, but you are officially too big to be a lap dog."

Like deathcurse mentioned in another Cress-and-Shuck omake, I'm amused and find it endearing that Shuck, despite being a demonic dog, behaves quite like a normal puppy and wants to curl up in his mistress' warm lap!
Have to go now, but I'm thoroughly loving these omakes!
It's fun reading about Cress, and especially about Lillet reading her bedtime stories!
o_O Shuck is HUGE!
(and can Lillet tell us a story too? I had a deprived childhood, ok? :P)
I'm imagining the huge Blan-Virgine household library, with many levels of balconies and books....all crowded with household servants half-heartedly dusting as they listen in on Lillet's story as the family is curled up on a couch on the ground floor XD.
And I second yui...Shuck is HUGE!!! O_O It's a wonder he didn't accidentally crush Lillet and Cress!!! That's good training there!
In my defense, I've been consistent about the size of barghests...
In "Black Dog Night," ch. 1 I talk about it being "as tall at the shoulder as a man," and in ch. 2 the Beast of Beaufrere (imitated by a barghest summoned by the villain in that story) is said to be five feet tall at the shoulder, and in "Pet the Black Dog" Shuck's mother's shoulders are level with Lillet's.
...but yes, he's definitely a large-breed dog.

Darn it, you beat me!
I was going to say that clearly yui and dc weren't paying attention to Mama Barghest when you described how humongous she was in "Pet the Black Dog"!
No, I remembered the size of the barghest--I was just surprised that a dog of that size and bulk could jump on two squishy humans and not break their ribs and femurs XD. Comedy, I know, and I'm not supposed to overthink an omake, but I couldn't help it!
It's a dog, dogs never hurt their owners, (that's my logic and I am sticking with it.)
...whereas I've been called out fairly for not paying enough attention :P
And Shuck was such a cute puppy!
Practically speaking, in my fanon Lillet has pretty serious magical wards on herself against getting hurt (see, eg., "The Hollow Heart" as well as the witch-hunter story) and she'd probably have done the same for her daughter (especially considering the political and extremist factors beyond the merely normal risk of accident...or the fact that her pet is a creature of Sorcery the size of a large pony), so it's very likely that if Shuck was coming down on them hard enough to injure, he'd instead have been zapped off the couch before the blow actually landed.
None of which actually shows up in the omake, but...actually, do you think I should mention some of that in a concluding Author's Note when I post the story in "Tome of Eldritch Omake" in April?
LOL, I remember that from "The Hollow Heart" ^^. Which was why I said that Shuck must have been well-trained on how to jump onto his mistress without hurting her--or getting zapped into the air XD. (Which could make for a hilarious training scene!)
A mention of it in the Author's Note would be funny, but wouldn't people wonder why a short omake is getting such a serious response? XDDDDD I'm just abnormal, no need to make alterations on my part
for this month's "Tome of Eldritch Omake" chapter.
At deathcurse's suggestion, I left out the Author's Note.
