Dog of Flanders
I'm sure not very many people are going to know about this (let alone care for that matter), but this is my all-time favorite World Masterpiece Theater. A Dog of Flanders is a book made by the author Ouida that takes place in Belgium and tells the tale of Nello, a poverty-stricken boy who, with his grandfather, saves a dog named Patrasche from an abusive owner and wants to become a painter like Reubens. This is a WONDERFUL anime!!! I saw the movie for this months ago and I love it to death, though it always makes me cry! I seriously WISH someone would actually SUB the actual TV series! That I would LOVE to see!!! This is also the first "official" WMT title in the library, and apparently it's VERY popular in Japan (proof here:
). Won't anyone give this beautiful, heartbreaking, and adorable tale a chance?
*puppy dog eyes*
The only reason I knew about it was reading on the list, I care about all WMT works, I'm sure it's an excellent production. Is just... even if I knew where to watch it I don't understand Japanese well =(
Dog of Flanders. You can watch that on Spacetoon, I think. But the problem is it's in Arabic. I speak it, but that won't help. I think I watched an episode or two, but I got so busy I couldn't watch the whole thing.
I wonder why it is that the middle east has the sense to pick up so many of these classics yet we don't in other nations? Blast! I think what it is is we get distracted by the new stuff, whereas since they are not, they route through history to pick up the cleaner more family-friendly classics or something perhaps.

I think that's because countries like America (where I'm from. I don't speak Arabic) don't think the titles will actually sell and are more interested in bringing the new modern garbage to the market (namely ANYTHING ECCHI, WHICH I HATE!!!) while these wonderful titles are left in the dark. If I had my own licensing company, I would license all the WMT titles I could get!
Eh, ecchi's a bit of a vague concept, we have to consider that people's concepts regarding that have probably changed over the times. We do manage to see some plot in spite of H now and then, even if there's often an inverse correlation. I mean, wasn't Daddy Long Legs slightly ecchi? Maybe sometimes the lines between romance and that blur, I dunno
GREAT NEWS!!! I managed to convince Licca Fansubs to take this up as a project once they finish subbing another anime! yaaaaaaaay!
@tyciol - I think it's because Princess Sara (which was mistranslated into Sally) was so successful in the 80s, so I guess Venus (Who later opened up SpaceToon channel) decided to dub a tid bit more. I'm sure I watched a few dubbed shows with ecchi, one to name is
which no one really cared to flame about. Romeo had quite a few violent scenes, and a few not so family friendly ones, down to the part where Romeo's best friend dies of blood loss 'cause he was coughing up buckets of it. Which is funny, because it's part of the WMT.
@FireChick - Really? I hope they do a swell job~!
Eh well, considering what happens in Green Gables, though I guess blood was graphic, though there was also blood in Peter Pan.
I'm not sure if this is allowed, but I found a place where you can watch episodes of the 1990s version of Dog of Flanders!
The only problem is that it's in Arabic only. The original Japanese version has apparently gone up in smoke.
@FireChick - Wow, where did you find that? I think it has every single anime that ever aired on Spacetoon.
Firechick that sounds okay to me. We have other examples of anime with non-Japanese voices subbed over them on AnimeSuki.
For example, Cooking Master Boy is in Mandarin or Cantonese I believe, because at the time we had not found the original Japanese voices so people translated it from that version instead.
I forgot how we can report new trackers but we should report this so they can add it for people to use.
I also found an Italian dub of Dog of Flanders: My Patrasche on Google. But it's called "Il Mio Amico Patrasche"
@Almazluverdis3: I just happened to find it on a random Google search. But their version of episode 18 got removed, so I'm watching the Italian dub instead. I wonder if there are anime groups that give Italian-dubbed anime English subs? I'd be very happy about that.
Hm, something tells me that there's not a huge Italy>English anime market. I couldn't even find a French>English group for watching the original Code Lyoko =(
1. Silver Zero Subs decided to sub the Dog of Flanderd 1975 series!
2. The Dog of Flanders: My Patrasche original Japanese RAW episodes are on VEOH!!! I'm gonna pester a lot of sub groups and make them sub it!
Silver Zero Subs has released episode 2!
Links plox, I don't know where these guys are or their torrents and whatnot.
Their site is here:
Looks like they're up to episode 3 now. I'd love to make a batch torrent for their work once I get on MegaUpload.
Two pieces of great news!
1. Silver Zero Subs has released episode 4.
2. RAWs of Dog of Flanders: My Patrasche have been found!...but it seems two episodes are apparently missing.
