Okada, inconsistency is thy name
She seems to have incredibly strong starts in her anime, but then often hits massive roadbumps as she goes along, some worse than others. Hana Saku Iroha might have been her best ending because it was one that wasn't coated in stoopid amounts of melodrama which seems to be her trump card. (Or trap card-- not to be confused with her other trap card. ). AnoHana was infamous for its eyerolling emoness, though it's present in a lesser degree to True Tears. Looking at these 3, I find it pretty evident that she's just winging it as she goes along and doesn't have a plan. (Anohana can't be ero-comedy??? NOOO!!!)
I'm sure you guys will disagree especially on TT (When I found out who won in that, my reaction was more "Cool story bro" then feeling sad for someone) , but I just notice her stories are mostly memorable for their starts and premise, and sometimes when it builds up in the middle.
Note that if we look at her original works save Hana Saku Iroha, it's always been one cour.
The most extreme case for me was Canaan which had a great beginning and then made me fall asleep for some reason.
Do you think she has what it takes to write a series longer than that? I'm almost confident that True Tears would have devolved into HSI had it been twice as long. Maybe not to that degree, as she seemed to have some reservations.
I've normally chalked it up to PA works for 2 of her more famous anime being unable to finish properly, because as I brought up in the Tari Tari thread that she's unable to end well, and there's also I guess AB! for PA works, where Jun Maeda was unable to write period.
And I love AnoHana the most out of her works...
Well appart from Canaan that seems to end with a S2 hook for a S2 that never came I don't have major issues with Okada endings.
True Tears,HSI are all right.
I can get past the melodrama in AnoHana
I liked the anime original ending of Zakuro despite its trollishness,in fact its trollishness is what I like about it.
Sketchbook full color's anime original ending brought a tear to my eye
I've heard from people Gosick gets better with time (and has anime original ending I think)
What! I keep hearing many people saying TT had a terrible ending. :3 But in any case, I feel that they're not always bad bad, but just not as strong as the other parts, which makes me wonder if she was able to churn out a original story more than 1 cour with consistency.
there's a difference between getting a bad ending and not getting the ending you want
I feel that they're not always bad bad, but just not as strong as the other parts,
I can say that about a whole lot of animes or even media in general, not just Okada.
I guess many animes suck at landing. My observation mainly comes from seeing that she hasn't many more than one cour works.
I don't think there's any question that 50% of the fans were going to hate the TT ending no matter which way it went. I personally can't see you can objectively call the ending terrible, as I think it accomplished pretty much everything an ending is supposed to in this sort of series. The vast majority of the negativity is simply people pissed that their girl lost.
Haha. I was talking about the ending in jest, since there's a bunch of people who rated it low because of the result. XD. Also, Hiromi is my favorite character from that show anyways so i don't think it would be because of the ending, at least for me. :3
I'm one of the few nonshippers I suppose. Which resulted in apathy.
Mari Okada is like the band from K-On!
When she actually gets down to work and focuses on writing great life/romance drama, she's typically quite good... but she'd rather waste time eating cross-dressing cakes and drinking fanservice tea.
So this is why Okada
better with an one cour limitation, imo. With less time to spend on eating cross-dressing cakes and drinking fanservice tea, Okada is forced to put in actual Gitah life drama practice and put forward well-executed romance "music".
So it's not so much that Okada is inconsistent, but rather that she's the anime writer equivalent of Yui Hirasawa...
Oh, and Archon, I see you've turned against me on Noe yet again.
No need to pretend this time, dude. You've clearly joined the Hiromi Dark Side of the True Tears Force.
As for me, I'm a proud believer in the New Noe Hope.
But K-on S2 is 2 cours, and I'm seeing actually LESS cake eating and mucking about than S1. How does that even work?
Anyways, lol Okada.
OK - who got Okada in the Kenshin?!
The bloody industry. They seem to think they need her for everything. They need to stop asking her and Bloody gal needs to say no to certain projects.
