Durarara: Week 1, episodes 1-5
So here it is, our first series, I'm hopefully this will all work, but remeber the entire point of this group is to talk and discuss about the show, otherwise its just watching anime right? so lets talk! some questions to think about;
-whose your favorite character and why?
-where do you think the series is going to go?
-how do you feel about the mood and atmosphere, the world that the show is trying to create?
Durarara is on crunchyroll, so you can watch it there if you'd like!
So I watched the first 2 episodes last night, I have to say it has one of my favorite opening character introductions, when the two main characters are walking along and Kida is essentially introducing the city, or at least Ikebokuro to who I can only assume is the hero, Ryugamine, It's rare at least in my experience to see Tokyo introduced like that, usually its just kinda assumed that people know the areas and to see the area like that, portrayed very plainly yet still so interestingly is quite enjoyable.
So far I haven't seen a character I've really latched onto, thought that im sure will change in time, thought I'm liking the well dressed waiter looking hulk guy!
so by all means post if you have the inkling, you don't have to watch all the episodes just to post your initial thoughts!
I'll start my rewatch of the first five episodes today. I've only seen the first 7 episodes myself, but I have enjoyed every episode that I have seen so far. The first OP is the right kind of energetic and I just love the first ED with its "trust me" lyrics and such.
I'll start posting my thoughts here and I'll also post some in the Durarara general thread
starting on that page. (Durarara's subforum is in the Retired section. I have a feeling that someday it will be unretired with a new season, but I don't know offhand what its sales were)
And this is the link for Durarara on Crunchyroll:
Watched the first episode. The internet is being slow so I'm thinking about just letting the second episode download overnight. Anyways...
I don't really like either the OP or ED. I do admit they fit the tone of the series so far though.
The first episode is intro and I don't really know the characters enough to have a favorite based on personality yet. I feel a lot of sympathy for Mikado, he's so overprotected it nearly stops being sad and starts being hilarious. Kida is interesting since he seems to know a lot of interesting people. On character appearances, I really like Karisawa's hat for some reason.
So im done with episode 5! Really liking how things are all weaving together, the disconnected nature of some of the events, then going back an reconnecting them appeals to me in a sort of Tarantino way, Im very curious just what the heck Izaya is, he talks as if he's not human, but is he really? Maybe hes just one of those genius woth an ego types, he hasn't done anything overtly supernatural but he certainly seems comfortable around it, I admit Im a little disappointed that they revealed so much about the "black rider" so early, a name, voice and everything, I would have liked her to sort or remain this urban legend type figure, but now it seems everyone sees her all the time, thought the slasher seems to be taking the urban legend slot quite nicely. I'm eager to continue watching and based on my usually quite frivellous attention span that says alot.
I like the open and ending personally, there not spectacular but I can sit throught them and just enjoy the visuals and the music just fine.
-I don't like Izaya much. He's a sociopath. Maybe an arguably good sociopath, but mentally deranged nonetheless.
-Does Selty actually speak? Or is it text to speech of the cell phone? I'm confused
-I think Mikado is connected to the Dollars. I don't really find it within his personality to be so interested in them otherwise.
-Izaya is definitely a sociopath
-On a slightly tangential topic, the Dollars seem sorta like Anonymous. They are extremely well known as a group, but completely unknown as individuals. Going off of this I think that the Dollars are either an extremely decentralized organization or a collective pseudonym, instead of a "real" gang.
-I bet Simon's Russian sucked, any native Russian speakers wanting to comment?
-My favorite character in the series so far is Shinra.
I don't think I'll participate in this one, since I've already seen Durarara and don't feel like rewatching it right now. But I will say that it's a great series and a wonderful choice for this group.
Yay for Durarara!
Izaya is defenitly a sociopath ya, but hes interesting, I mean good as in interesting not good as in I'd like to grab a beer with him. maybe he simply doesn't know how a regular human acts? who knows but hes definitely one of the more intriguing characters.
I don't think Mikado is part of the dollars, not yet anyways, but he'll seek them out or perhaps they will come to him? maybe the place he's talking online is actually sort of a meeting place for them? he might be unknowingly supplying them information or something.
Episode 1: It was a good introduction to many of the characters in the series. Hints at many anime references when Mikado bumps into cardboard of Holo. Shizuo's super strength is hinted at with flying fridge. Celty's takedown of the kidnappers was epic, and shows that she is something supernatural. Simon's intro was quite humorous.
